As Heath scampered off with his tail between his legs, Saunders checked in with Melody.

"Are you OK? He didn't hurt you or anything did he?"

"Heath? Please, he isn't capable. Only thing he ever bruised of mine was my dignity. Now tell me, when did I become your wife?"

"Wife leaves more of an impact than girlfriend."

"Lukas." Mel shot him eyes.

"It got him to leave, right?" He sighed. "I know. And I won't ask again. I know you'll say no."

"Oh yeah? Well, don't give up on me. Maybe I'm close to saying yes."

He gave her a look of such warmness, she wanted to melt.

"You're doing it again. You're asking me to marry you with your eyes."

"It's only because you don't respond well to my words."

"Well, I respond well to this." She leaned in and kissrf him deeply with a wordless I love you.

While Melody and Saunders were getting steamy, Heath was getting hot about their recent exchange.

"Mimi why didn't you warn me?! I was just over there and made a fool of myself hitting on her, and she's MARRIED?"

"What're you mad at me for, I told you she's married."

"I THOUGHT YOU WERE JOKING!"

"If you spent more time with me, you'd know my jokes are better than that."

"And she's pregnant too? You didn't say a thing about that. And that dude said it's not even their first one."

"I mean, no offense, Dad, but other people's kids are kind of none of your business."

"Look, kid, I just would've appreciated a heads up."

"Sure, I'll do that once I get my last payment of back child support you owe me. Oh and Dad, that's what my A joke material sounds like. But no, seriously, my inbox is open to any and all checks from you. I'm looking forward to that child-father bonding."

"How Did You Hear About Us?"

“How do you know what to see?”

I often get asked this question by people who are having trouble finding out about shows and deciding which tickets to buy. Theatre marketing can leave something to be desired (not everyone is Shucked!) so being “in-the-know” about theatre can be tricky when you don’t know where to start. While there’s no single answer for how to find shows, I find the best way to become an avid theatre-knower is to do the following:

Cultivate your own taste- know the shows you like, don’t like, and why! Knowing your own taste is essential to understanding what shows you may like in the future! While you should also try to find shows that may not normally be on your radar, knowing your taste will help with the next step.

Find critics you trust- try to regularly check out professional theatre critics at major outlets, like Helen Shaw at the New Yorker, Jesse Green and Laura Collins-Hughes at the New York Times, and Jackson McHenry at NYMag/Vulture. Whether you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with their theatre opinions, understanding their taste in relation to yours can help you find new shows you hadn’t previously been aware of.

Check the New York Times Critic’s Picks- these are usually hidden gems or Off-Broadway shows whose marketing may not otherwise reach you. If you’re not a NYTimes subscriber try to regularly check the Critic’s Pick page- depending on the size of the venue/production, shows that are critic’s picks can sometimes sell out after being chosen by the publication. (This method was how I found out about Jack’s production of James Ijames’ TJ Loves Sally 4 Ever, allowing me to find both a new artistic venue and a new playwright to follow!)

Follow “theatre people” on Twitter- In addition to those professionals publishing reviews, try to follow their twitters for more off-the-cuff opinions and recommendations. Additionally, follow theatre makers and influencers on Twitter as well- Casey Mink, Diep Tran, Heath Saunders, and Louis Peitzman discuss theatre a lot and following them has helped me snag tickets to shows before they become popular. Podcast host Lindsey Weber also has a Substack called Not Broadway that has some great recs too! I’m not on TikTok or Instagram, but if you happen to find people regularly posting on those, follow them too!

Regularly check venue websites- this is where I confess that a mailed flyer worked on me ONCE- I received a flyer for the Two River Theater production of Alice Childress’ Wine in the Wilderness. I had previously never heard of this New Jersey theater, and was extremely interested in seeing an Alice Childress play, given her many recent revivals. THAT SAID, I do not think emails or mailing lists are very effective as marketing tools- there’s simply so many that it’s impossible to sort through them. However, I now regularly check the seasonal schedule for Two River Theater, to see if there are any upcoming shows I want to see. This method works best for smaller, Off-Broadway or regional theaters, that have shorter runs and changing production schedules. If you do find a new theater you really love, try to make a habit of checking their seasonal schedule when you’re looking for a show!

Ultimately, be curious and keep looking! If you see a show you love, try to find productions of the creator’s other work, or keep tabs on their ongoing career. Actively keep up with venues that program niche or otherwise overlooked material. Starting with smaller venues and works can be a more affordable alternative to just buying tickets to the most recent Best Musical. At the end of the day, the only way to get into theatre is to get into theatre!

You may know of Mark Mulcahy from a lot of things, or maybe you're one of those people who don’t know who he is but should. In the ’80s Mulcahy led the fantastic but underrated college-rock band Miracle Legion. In the ’90s, he fronted Polaris, the semifictional house band of the (also severely underrated) Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Through the late ’90s and early ’00s, Mulcahy held down a successful solo career, taking a pause following the unexpected death of his wife before returning for some performances with Polaris in 2012. He then went back to his solo career in 2013 with the fantastic and under-recognized Dear Mark J. Mulcahy, I Love You and later reunited with Miracle Legion in 2016.

Mulcahy’s concert on Friday night at Rough Trade NYC began with him alone onstage performing “Wicked World,” off his latest, The Gus, an album inspired by George Saunders’ writing. It started off tranquil but the words hinted at some evil brewing—it all felt very 2019. Bass and drums joined in as the song boiled over and Mulcahy’s lyrics dissolved into a repeated “do ay do ay do ay.” “I took a walk around the neighborhood today, that’s a lot of progress,” he remarked, not quite earnestly but several times between songs. By the third time he dryly said this, Mulcahy followed up with a more earnest observation: “I don’t know why you don't miss the shitty-ness.”

In interviews, Mulcahy’s mentioned that Saunders’ writing inspired him to up his own lyrical game for The Gus, although he’s consistently been a strong songwriter throughout his career. Sometimes taking a page from Randy Newman, Mulcahy’s written some incredibly honest, upbeat-sounding songs about sad subject matter, like on “Where’s the Indifference Now?” which deals with the Heath Ledger’s untimely death. Other tracks feature a strong sense of heart-on-your-sleeve sincerity, like “Happy Boat,” about moving Mulcahy’s aunt from an “old folks home” in New York to his home state of Massachusetts. He performed it without a guitar, front and center stage. “Taking Baby Steps,” off the latest album, was lan outright power-pop anthem, easily one of the best in his considerable catalog. Mulcahy had the audience chant, “Bob! Bob! Bob!” to lead him into “What if I Go Off with Bob?” which peeled into a motoring beat. The set ended with Mulcahy in full falsetto for “Ciao My Shining Star,” a lullaby of sorts. —Dan Rickershauser | @D4nRicks
