Chapter 6

I do wanna thank those who have been patience and thank everyone of you for enjoying the story🥹🥹I tried to make this one a little longer to make up not updating sooner. Thank you all lovely bats💜

Warnings: mostly angst, fighting, angst and yelling. (Please tell if I leave anything out)

Marko stood staring at the jumping mouse on the ground and his best friend stared back at him waiting for some type of reaction. For the longest time, the four vampires have been close but Paul and Marko were best friends, was Paul just going to hide this? From him? Marko even told Paul how fascinated he was by Nani after their first encounter and he was with her behind his back without even sharing?!

“So were you ever gonna tell me? Your best friend?” Marko took a step closer to the pair causing Klaus’s breathing to increase from his intimidation. For Klaus’s sake, Paul tried to put on a laid-back approach for Marko, ease him back into his usual goofy mischievous self hoping it wouldn’t backfire.

“I was, just when Nani trust me a little more! That way she isn’t cold to you right off the bat bud.” Paul stated, Klaus tried to enforce his defense.

“Y-yes! Two vampire companions are better than one!”

“You better shut it rat before I feed you to a cat.”Marko snapped at Klaus, turning his attention back to Paul. “Are you telling the truth? Don’t keep secrets, especially from me man”

“Yeah, bud I’m telling the truth” Paul’s answer was apparently not enough for an already angry Marko.

“Then take me to her, now.” Klaus froze at Marko’s demand and look at Paul for his response, he wouldn’t do that, would he? Especially not now when she’s still recovering from her journey and barely healed wound.

“I…I can’t bud, not now. She’s dealing with something right now and she barely even wanted me around so let’s just leave her alone tonight.” Paul was running through all his options if Marko couldn’t accept his answers along with looking around for anything that could give him an idea. It hit him, his eyes landed on Klaus who was trying to inch his way for an exit, he lunged himself at the rodent. Marko tackled Paul reaching to grab Klaus thinking of using him as a bargaining chip against Paul. Unfortunately for them, Klaus managed to dodge their attempts and ran into a crack in the wall and shouted“I knew it! I knew this was a bad idea! Already trying to hurt me and Nani!”

“No, we weren’t! Just make a pact with Marko!”Paul shoved Marko off himself and held him down as Marko struggled in anger yelling a slew of curses in Italian.

“I will do no such thing! One of you is clearly enough!”

“ti strangolerò, ratto infestato dalla malattia!” Marko screamed at Klaus before Paul covered his mouth pinning him down. “Let’s all chill out for a minute.” Looking down and Marko gave an irritated nod then at Klaus who peaked his head out. All sat in silence before Marko muffled, Paul slowly removed his hands but kept him pinned in case he lashed out again.

“Why don’t you wanna take me to her?” Paul now seeing Marko looked hurt and the pain in his voice from his attempt to hide his reasons, looking at Klaus who was nodding his head from side to side but ignored him.

“Because she was shot with an arrow and right now she needs lots of rest if I took you to her she probably thought we were trying to pull one over on her.”

“Is she ok?!”Marko tensed up again.

“Yes she is, and right now my master does not need this bickering or tantrums.” Klaus finally emerged from his hiding place. “Paul, I’m warning you any harm comes to her because your negligence will be met accordingly, and you.” Pointing his paw at Marko only to kick a speck of dirt in his direction and jump off back to the main cave’s exit.

Both vampires sat in silence for a moment not really sure what to say to the other, both looking at each other. One would attempt to speak but so would the other leaving them at an awkward standstill until Marko sighed.

“I’m sorry….for freaking out.”

“It’s ok, I know you like her just as much. Sorry, I didn’t tell you sooner, here.” Paul placed the feather necklace around Marko’s neck, Marko looked surprised and looked at Paul.

“You technically saved her, had it not been for you wanting to break into Max’s house she wouldn’t have gotten out. Let’s tell her it was you who got her out tomorrow night.” Paul leaned in to hug Marko patting him on the back, Marko resuscitated his companions and gently embraced. Sitting in their tight embrace until they heard David call for them from near their nesting area, as they emerged David stopped them from going any further.

“Max is here.” David opens Pauls's jacket looking for something looks over at Marko seeing the feather on Marko now, tucking it in Marko’s torn shirt to avoid it being seen.

“Anything about that witch woman we don't know, if anything happens I take the fall got it?”David looked at both of them for reinsurance, getting a nod from both of them they make their way back to the main cave. Dwayne sitting on the fountain and Max stood in the middle of the cave watching them emerge and sit.

“Well! We're here old man what'd you want?”David sat in his chair smirking acting as if he doesn't know the reason for Max’s visit. “Must be important to bring his majesty down here.”Dwayne joked alongside David and the others laughed.

“Something of mine is gone. Certainly couldn't have walked out, at least not by itself. I was wondering if you boys have seen anything, anything you should tell.” Max looked at each of them smiling.

“Lose your bloodhound?”Paul chuckle until hearing Thorn’s growl from behind, Max called him over and patted his head.

“No, no Thorn wouldn't run, he is much too loyal to me, unlike some people in this world. The thing I lost is valuable, had it for a very long time, long before you four even. So have any of you seen it?” looking up back at the boys with a smile that held no warmth of comfort just malice waiting for some kind of response to his question. Max enjoyed the moments he'd spend with his boys, specifically the ones where he know he can make them nervous. It was much easier to do when they were newly turned vampires by his younger brother Vlad but over time they've grown rowdy and more disobedient especially when David technically is second to command out of the boys. He remembers the day he found them, the day his younger brother died after the collapse of the hotel. To say he was upset would be a lie, Vladimir had a tendency to jump into situations where he'd have to be the one to pull him out.

Though that didn't stop the pain of losing the one person who was the closest to a family as you could get as a vampire. The boys being the only thing Vlad left behind felt like an unwanted present at the time but the fear he strike in them and control over his new sons was like having a new part of the family alongside his sleeping daughter Nani, least in his eyes. The grip he had on Nani and the boys is one he would not let go of even if it meant hurting them or worse killing one of them to keep his control and the others in the line. David knows this all too well and would go to the same length if it meant protecting his vampire brothers, but for now, he'd act as if he doesn't know Nani or their assistance in her escape. He and the boys didn't want to know what Max would do if he did know about their involvement.

“Well, we don't know what you lost if we don't know what it is” David stated at Max’s vague question. Max merely smiled and walked up to Dwayne who kept his cold stare looking up at him as Max examined him. Moving onto David who just waved at him while keeping a laid-back demeanor while smirking, only dropping his expression once Max turned around to look at Paul and Marko sitting on the couch. Paul tried his best to imitate David and Dwayne's relaxed expressions, until he saw Matko biting his thumbnail, something he did when he got anxious. Max scanned Paul up and down looking for any falters in his manners, also taking note of Marko’s nail-biting.

A growl caught all of their attention as Thorn was growling at a small pile of debris and trash, Max called him over. “I don't enjoy this hovel either thorn. Well, you'll know what I lost once you see it, so please bring it to me when you see it.” Max gave a final look at each of them as he made his way out of the cave with Thorn. All sat for a minute, waiting to make sure he was gone, once sure Max was gone along with his dog all of them relaxed. Paul walked over to the pile Thorn growled at and knelt down.

“I know you're in there, ya might as well come out. I and Marko can't keep it secret from David and Dwayne, if Marko knows then they all have to.” Paul held his hands out as David and Dwayne watched in confusion only to see Klaus crawl out and climb into Paul’s hand.

“... I...I didn't want to risk being seen by him so I hid.” shaking as Klaus tried to calm his heart after nearly being discovered by Thorn. “That beast I can't stand that dog. Max use to hold me over him as a threat to Nani, ugh the nightmares id have.” Covering his eyes with his paws still shaking until Paul petted him.

“Hey, can I hold you,” Marko asked slightly excited to possibly hold the familiar.

“Please no, I've been in death’s hands enough for today.” Klaus curled up in Paul's hand.

Dwayne looked over at David seeing he looked like he was still in shock from their surprise guest.

“Before you get mad I have a good reason why he’s here.”Paul looked at David as Dwayne spoke up. “Better hurry up with it then Paul.”

Paul explained the events leading to finding Nani injured to agreeing to help her in her journey of finding her lost love.

“Klaus is here because he got worried about her and me being a threat so…” Paul looked at Klaus then back at David. “I made a pact to help her and if I don’t….” He didn’t want to finish so Klaus finished it for him.

“If he doesn’t, he loses his free will until the journey is done. This was for the protection of Nani, I didn’t want any harm to come to her…” Klaus was interrupted by David letting out the loudest gut-retching scream at him startling the rest of the boys and causing Klaus to cover his ears and shut his eyes tight out of fear.

“protect nani! help her! what about us you little wretch! Did you not see the one person chasing her down and would kill any of us just for knowing about her?! Undo it now!” Paul was about to speak up only to be tugged on the sleeve by Marko to keep quiet. “I’m not gonna lose the only family I have left because you’re too fucken weak to protect your master….so don’t go dragging my brothers into it. If you fail to protect her it wasn’t from us hurting her, it’s because you failed….what kind of familiar even are you.”

Klaus kept his head down, his black eyes starting to fill up with tears and his ears drooped to the sides of his head. “I know….I’m sorry” All grew quiet aside from the occasional sniffling from Klaus trying to hide his exhausted and upset self, now seeing from David’s point of view and understanding.

He lost his master once, his friend since she was a child carved out of a branch by her father tasked with guiding and watching out for her through her life. Of all things Nani’s father could’ve carved him into, a hawk, a fox, or even a dragon, anything worthy of protecting others but a jumping mouse? Who would ever want a little mouse for a familiar, a child’s silly little suggestion taken literally or perhaps Nani’s father enjoys making cruel fools for familiars? If Nani was still with her family would she have replaced him by making another? Will she do so now if she finds out he was there with the people she deemed untrustworthy?!

Klaus was starting to hyperventilate while unable to hold back his tears all these thoughts scared him more than the night creatures surrounding him. Suddenly feeling a soft touch of being petted from his head to his back, looking up to see Marko petting him as comfort. Unable to stop himself from fully crying he lets out his sobs and fears of being replaced.

“What if she doesn’t love me anymore? Will she replace me? Am I really that bad of a familiar?!” Klaus cried out in heartache and fear. David didn’t realize how badly his words hit Klaus, his word had come out of anger and worry for Paul’s safety. As Klaus's cries went on they saw his bright yellow fur starts to turn a dark faded color and its one bouncy soft hair turn flat and stringy texture, plopped on his side in Paul’s hand.

“What’s happening?!” Paul said in a panic and fear may be dying, looking at David. “Fix him!”

“Fix him how?!” David and Paul yelled back at each other in panic while Marko grew anxious staring at the situation growing worse as they grew louder until a voice chimed in

“Gimme 'em.” Dwayne takes Klaus in his hands and proceeds to walk towards the cave's exit stopping to look at the three left behind. “No more yelling. We’ll take him back when I’m done.” Dwayne looks at David last before exiting with Klaus. Looking at the moon as it was on its slow but decent descent, sitting on the edge of the cliff with Klaus in his palm.

“You know she won’t replace you, right? Especially going into a vampire’s next to get you back. A person ready to replace another person wouldn’t go that length.” Klaus's ear twitched listening to Dwayne before dropping back down.

“She’ll replace me once she finds out I asked for assistance from one of you.” Klaus’ declining appearance had at least stopped for the time being, Dwayne took note of this and kept the conversation going.

“Try to see it another way, you tried to get help from the one person Nani may trust and you just wanted to ensure her safety. I doubt she’d replace you after hearing that, don’t you remember what the first thing she did when she woke up?”

“Run?”

“No, she asked about the hotel she put you in and you were the first thing she looked for. All while taking on four crazy vampires.” Dwayne chuckled while petting Klaus. “So no I doubt she’d replace you especially if she’d had ya for a long time.” Klaus slowly got up as his appearance turned back to his original manner, stopping his tears after hearing his words.

“David was right about something though, I can’t ask to risk one of you for our journey. I understand his reasonings…and his anger.” Klaus’ ears dropped again.

“We’ll talk about that soon, for now, let’s go back inside and see if they haven’t killed each other yet.”Dwayne offered a soft smile.

“But… but the pact can’t be undone it has to be fulfilled.”

“We’ve dealt with Max and way worse” Dwayne calmed Klaus down but inside he hadn’t any idea either aside from just fulfilling the pact as soon as possible. For now, he’d avoid causing Klaus any more stress and take him back into the cave back to the other seeing they’d all calm down, David looking the most exhausted out of Paul and Marko while hunched over in his seat trying to figure out what to do as their leader.

“David,” Dwayne called him out of his thoughts. “Let’s do the pact and finish it as soon as we can.” David lets out a tired sigh and gives in.

“Fine.”David’s eyes landed on Klaus and Paul, both looking at each other silently deciding what to do next until Klaus finally announced.

“Give me time with Nani to explain, she most likely won’t be happy with what I’ve done especially telling you she’s trying to find her lover.” He lowered his head feeling upset with himself only to hear David much calmer and proceed to their nesting area.

“Fine…we’ll talk to her tomorrow night for now go home to her and no more hiding or pacts got it?”

“Of course!” Klaus's small ears twitch up in cheer and hopped out of Dwayne’s hands to the exit. “Thank you all!” Jumping his way home.

The three remaining boys followed after David and join him in their nest. Paul faced the wall with his back to David still feeling a pit in his stomach from David’s screaming at Klaus.

“Hey, David?”

“Hm?”

“Are you angry at me?” Paul waits for any negative reactions only for them to never come, feeling David hug him from behind.

“No, never. I was just scared is all…I don’t wanna lose anyone.” Turning Paul around to give him a proper embrace.

“If I catch feeling for her would you be angry?” Paul’s voice grew to shake.

“No, I love you…all of you, if you like her then I’ll try my best to play nice. Doesn’t mean I’m not gonna play pranks on her.” David chuckled Paul joined in his laughter soon so did Marko hearing them while Dwayne smiled as he fall into his slumber.

Klaus was exhausted from his nightly adventure, crawling back into the cabin window and making sure to close it. Nani was still in an unbothered sleep, Klaus remembering Dwayne’s words as he hopped back into bed. Curling up against Nani’s cheek, quickly fall asleep as he felt her hand hold him close and caressed her thumb as she slept. He would not forget his place with his master, and his family.

Title: 458 is the equivalent of ILU aka I Love you

Unlike Jungle and Numb, 458 is far less explicit with its story-elements - both in visuals and lyrics which is understandable since Dante's 7 Levels of Purgatory also offer less to work with in terms of striking visuals.

To generalize, Dante's Purgatory is set up to confront sinners with the counterparts to the Seven Deadly Sins, aka the Seven Virtues. Unlike Hell which was very much based on sinful actions, the sins here are more character-based and making it through all of Purgatory is meant to basically cleanse the soul so it can enter Heaven.

Early on in the MV, we get a glimpse of an Angel which could be Beatrice - a direct messenger from God who pops up throughout the entire Divine Comedy and serves as a direct communication link between Dante and God. Her job is basically to ensure the mission gets carried out fully and successfully.

Later on, we also get a quick shot of her whispering something in Hyunsuk's ear which could symbolize their first personal encounter as was the case near the end of Purgatory when she took over as Dante's personal guide.

In addition to Beatrice, a golden eagle also makes an appearance in the video with Jinyoung. As seen in the animated Trailer, within the story, Dante dreamed it was an eagle who carried him to the entry point of Purgatory.

As Dante's version of Purgatory is filled with angels meant to guide the sinners back onto the right track, we can find a lot of angel imagery throughout the MV

There's also a bunch of scrolling text on the LED boards seen in the back throughout the choreography-centered sections of the video - short phrases such as "The soul which is created quick to love", "l tempo non si perda per poco amor" (yet another excerpt from Canto 18 - the one about love and free will), "Per ardua ad astra" (through adversity to the stars), and so on

These can be seen more easily in the Behind the Scenes

We also get shots of Hyunsuk's bare back where we find words written along his spine - specifically the words "Ratto, ratto, che 'l tempo non si perda per poco amor" from Canto 18

Other shots show the members in red-and-white racing gear with the words "Luceat lux tua" printed across the front - "Let your light shine". This is a callback to Byounggon's line in What You Wanted and those same words can also be found on the official lightstick.

The suits are best seen in the MV Reaction video.

At another point, we find Byounggon in front of some fire again - an element that can be found within Dante's Purgatory as well nearing the end of the story when they encounter the Virtue of Chastity (quite funny when Byounggon's wearing a damn handcuff necklace in the shot).

This encounter takes place in the final ring of Purgatory meaning it's the last hurdle before they can finally enter Heaven. Within the story, Dante and his two companions have to walk through a freakishly hot wall of fire and, once they've made it to the other side, Dante has to say Goodbye to Virgil who'd accompanied him through all of Hell and Purgatory so he wouldn't have to suffer alone.

Toward the end of the MV, the overall tone shifts as we see a grayscale wide shot of a ginormous angel statue, kneeling, hunched over, and crying as water emerges from below its folded legs and falls off the edge of the cliff it's resting upon.

Now, I'm not sure what exactly this statue represents but we do have a lot of crying as Dante and crew walk through Eden, though it's mostly him who's first crying over Virgil and then when some angels show compassion toward him. However, we do also get a moment of Beatrice weeping which is likely to have inspired this shot.

As the members emerge from what I assume to be Eden, we can see more giant statues behind them - likely a representation of the Procession found in Canto 29 where a bunch of white-robed people are guided by a candelabra.

We end on a wide-shot of five statues facing the giant kneeling angel - one statue for each member.

They've survived Hell and Purgatory. Now it's time to enter Paradise.

Let's talk about attitudes toward obesity in pets, with the beautiful Pixie!

As humans there are many reasons for the diversity of shapes and weights we have. Genetics, epigenetics, medical, personal choice, upbringing, socioeconomic factors, mental health, and cultural influences among others. We make our own choices for our own bodies, and that autonomy means nobody else has the right to make our choices for us, nor shame us for our bodies.

However, pets are different, they CAN'T make or advocate for their own choices. They live their lives purely under our control. Everything from the environment to their diet to their social life is curated by us as owners, and even their genetics are selectively bred and relies on responsible human choices. It is therefore our responsibility and duty as owners to help our animals be as comfortable as possible.

I wanted to get that out of the way because I don't want to glorify the "chonky culture" that has arisen around animals. An obese animal must contend with a lot of strain on their body and a lot of limitations to their enrichment. Is Pixie here cute? Absolutely, she's bloody adorable. But I really want to squash the idea that enabling our pets to be obese for no reason is okay.

The "for no reason" part is important here. Much like humans, rats can have a wide range of medical issues that contribute to their weight loss and gain. In fact, many human conditions are studied on rats to begin with, before that knowledge is applied to humans! But the most common reason we see is poor dietary choices or limited enrichment and motivation for the animals to play and engage with their environment.

When we get a pet who - for whatever reason - is prone to an unhealthy degree of weight gain, it's our responsibility as owners to at least try to help them manage that, even if it means putting more effort into their diet, be it changing ingredients or regulating quantity. It's no different or any less vital than putting weight on underweight rats!

This rat is Pixie, she had a pair of adoring owners who have kindly given me permission to discuss their girls status and history candidly for education, so please be nice to them! I'm absolutely not putting them on blast here, they were doing the best they knew with the information they had, and still love their girls very much, if it was up to them they'd have kept them for life.

Pixie has just arrived, so we're not sure yet about which factors influenced her. She is a whopping 800g, larger than Crunchwrap Supreme. Her sister Maze is overweight as well, but not to the same extent. They grew up with permanent free roam and a wonderful big, enriching cage! Because of the extremity of Pixie's condition, I do think it's likely that there is something abnormal about her metabolism or eating habits.

I do suspect food was a factor based on conversations with her owners, things like a morning porridge of baby food mixed with Vetafarm is a cute concept, but it's too high in sugar and is flavoured to motivate eating for pleasure rather than hunger, like much of our processed food today.

They likely would have benefited more from some chopped fresh veggies in the morning! Spoiling our ratties can be done in a really healthy way with the right ingredients, we just have very little guidance. Many of the staple rat foods we have available such as Vetafarm Origins, work well for some rats but can cause overeating in others, whereas others like Oxbow Garden Select can miss the nutritional mark for growing or pregnant rats.

So what SHOULD you do? Well... As with all things there's no single right way, feeding styles vary across the world! However, aim to supplement their staple pellet or mix with: frequent veggies, infrequent fruit, meat in moderation, fatty nuts etc sparingly. And with all things, be mindful of portion sizes.

Feeding rats is way too nuanced a subject to go into on one Facebook post, so I reccomend reading up at The Scuttling Gourmet for some good ways to incorporate frequent servings of the right kind of vegetables and meats into your rats diet in a healthy way!

And what's next for Pixie? Well, she's just arrived and I haven't decided yet how hard we will be focusing on weight loss yet. She's nearly two, so do we say "you're here for a good time, not a long time, do what you want" and assume that she won't last long enough to justify the benefits of weight loss over the discomfort of a slow decrease?

Or do we do our best here and now in the moment to make her as comfortable as possible?

How much of her quality of life REALLY relies on her eating style? Eating is probably only a small portion of the things that make her life worth living, so would she really mind if her diet was changed or limited?

But this is one of those nuanced ethical decisions where ten people might have totally different opinions on justifications for them.

For now, Pixie is showing signs of also having a uterine infection which will affect her health, and her weight will absolutely impact whether the surgeryto fix it is possible, so that will factor into our decisions and means a chat with our vet before we attempt any dieting.

I hope this ramble has given you all something to think about! When Pixie's photos invariably show up in some chonky culture Facebook group like "this ratto is fatto" I won't be mad, but I do hope it creates an opportunity for people to learn and think about whether they should be taking more action to help their overweight pets.

I'd like to ask that people in the comments be respectful of the diversity of lived experience and body autonomy as humans. Body shaming is something we are taught to do, so we can teach ourselves not to if we try, and while Pixie doesn't care, the person reading your funny jokes may have had those same jokes used on them, so let's choose to be good to each other.

I love your blog. I miss rats a lot. I've had 13 rats over the span of 2 years, as I only adopted the oldies, and it was so exhausting to constantly deal with ill or disabled rats, with introductions, with deaths - but they also brought me so much joy with their cheeky shenanigans, snoozing ratpiles, and adorable grooming sessions. Since I last posted to this tumblr, I have lost every single rat previously posted, except for Junkrat and Roadhog. I have actually lost at least 4 or 5 more than what I had posted here.

But, I have a new generation now. I had a litter of rattles, and have procured several more (most of which my mum and brother gifted to me).

My original 8; Blueberry, Meelo, Venus, Asami, Poki, Momo, Oogie and Zero. Momo was the oldest, she made it to 2 years and 11 months. I still miss Blueberry, my heart rat, an unbelievable amount. It’s approaching 2 years since I lost her and my heart still aches.

Then there was Angelo, Jeremy, Dexter, Foxy and Sir Humpsalot. Dexter was the longest living from those boys, he made it to 2 years 10 months.

Mei, Appa, Tracer and Alice. Zarya and Phoebe also passed. Bumi, Roku and Señor Nibbles.

Twirlson Tilty McWhirligig, a rescue with a permanent head tilt that I adored, passed away unexpectedly this year. He was about 2.5 years old, I miss his goofy little face.

I got a pregnant mama by surprise, one of the rats I got her with passed within 24 hours of having them; Pingu. One of the babies from the litter Queenie (mama) had also passed away at about three weeks old; Ember. Another from the litter, Sundae, had to be PTS a few weeks ago due to a large tumour.

Now my current groups consist of 3 cages. One with Queenie and her remaining daughters; Scout, Kiwi, Piccolo and Wednesday Rattums. And a lady we got who had been incorrectly sexed; Ratchel.

A group of boys, mostly Queenie sons. Babadook, Pea-body, Trico, Pabu and Spud. Twirlson was in this cage along with some others; Atlas, Ratchels correctly sexed brother. Some newer rats are also amongst my boys; Dahmer (pictured), Teddy, Kemper and Ottis. Kemper bit me and I had to get a tetanus shot, which was unpleasant.

The other group has my current oldies from what I consider my second generation of rats; Roadhog and Junkrat. There’s also Lady Bean (Beanie) and Vermillion Von Crumb (Vee) who have been around a while. Cosmo and Peach, two rats my little brothers teacher wanted to rehome because she didn’t have the time and they weren’t very handleable; they are now giant suckers for attention. Actual attention whores. Then a bunch of energetic babies; Luna, Lumi, Roux, Florence (Flora) and Opal.

So that’s where I am. I basically have a whole new mischief now, a third generation, and they’re all just as lovely and photogenic as my past rattos.

There wasn’t much point to this, I just logged onto tumblr and saw how many people had seen my Rats In Hats post, and figured I’d give an update.

Top 5 best pets (breeds/species) you’ve cared for, and alternatively, the top 5 worst you’ve cared for

Oh, can I do both?? I’m doing both because I like to ramble too much, sorry!

Best first!

1) Ball pythons! I’m extremely biased because Charis is so fucking chill, but I love ball pythons because they’re just so chill and I love their size and weight and color. I wish she would try more foods, but we’re working on that!

2) Cats! I haven’t met a cat I’ve disliked so far, I don’t think, but I’ve been pretty lucky with the cats I’ve taken care of too. No major grumpy asshole cats yet!

3) Rats! I really love rattos, even though they’re a bit higher energy than I can always deal with (though that’s partly bc we have girls). But they’re very fun to feed, fun to do enrichment for, and they’re just so personable. Little naked tail puppies. Their only drawback at all is their damn lifespan (2-4 years).

4) Leopard geckos! Okay, so my experience is pretty limited, but I adored having the three rescue girls at my place! I’d love to have a leo sometime, but I’ll have to wait and see if it happens or even if it can - I’m allergic to mealworms and I don’t know how much it extends to other insects at this point.

5) Rabbits! Again, experience is fairly limited - mostly to a few domestic rabbits we had at Wildside. But I really wish I could’ve brought one of those buns home, and I really want to get a bun (or a couple) in the future! Soft & cute vegan dogs. ♥

Top worst because rambling!

1) Goats. Goats are nice and all, but they are not a favorite of mine, and it makes the work involved with them that much more arduous. My aunt had a herd of like 16 at one point & I was her animal sitter (for the goats + 5 cats + 2 dogs). I hated having to get up early to do chores before getting to class, and the yard was always gross & muddy and it was just a big pain, tbh.

2) Ferrets. My friend’s ferret was a sweetheart & I loved him! He was also an exception as he was fairly calm for a ferret & easy to get along with. Most ferrets are just so hyper & off-the-wall and it’s just too much for me.

3) Big Drooly Dogs (ex: Saint Bernards). A different aunt had a couple of these guys who I also petsat for and they were absolute sweethearts! But...I can’t do it. The hair. The DROOL. The sheer size. I like big dogs in short doses, but mostly I just couldn’t handle the drool. I wore sandals full time in her house because I got so squicked out by stepping in wet spots.

4) Parrots...sadly. :( I love birds and I desperately love the idea of caring for parrot - the height of enrichment & food! But I can’t handle them for the most part. I can’t do the noise, and I don’t have the energy & I’m not home enough to properly care for most parrots. I think I could potentially do budgies or a cockatiel or two? But I honestly don’t know for sure, and it would be something I’d have to think very very hard about before trying. I plan to try getting into volunteering & helping out a parrot rescue in my area though, so at least I could get some more exposure, and maybe try fostering, and also make food for them! So we’ll see. But it’s a pretty heavy maybe-leaning-towards-no. (Not to mention the risk of all the cats.)

5) Turtles. Okay, so I haven’t exactly had a turtle yet. But I’m going to end up with one (a RES), with any luck, from bf’s parents. From everything I’ve read, I don’t think they’re really a great pet, and particularly not for me. But I’d much rather have this turt for the rest of his life than his current situation, so we’re doing it! But I hate water changes, and that’s gonna be a major thing with him. Not terribly looking forward to that part, but I do look forward to getting him into a better home, with some proper enrichment and seeing what I can do with his diet!
