2023 - A year of "meh" BLs

Honestly, I think that my title says it all.

Maybe I am alone in this but i really think that 2023 was a really meh year in terms of BLs.... I looked back at my MDL watchlist and I only have 10 shows/movies that i watched that aired this year. (That's compared to my 20+ that aired last year, most of which I watched last year...) Looking back, the only show(s) i remember well is only friends... (I would add moonlight chicken but I genuinely do not remember much about it aside from the gemFourth arc, also im not gonna talk about msp because technically that aired last year :P)

Maybe I'm alone in this but i really feel like most shows this year just weren't hitting as hard as they usually do? (i mean, i looked at my dropped list and there are 5 BLs there that aired this year, so even if i didn't drop them I'd still have watched less than last year).

It sucks because i really did want to finish hidden agenda, dangerous romance, and a boss and a babe but i literally could not bring myself to finish them... I got so close to the end for all of them tooo.... it just felt like,,,,, all of these shows could have been ended in 8 episodes.

which brings me to my next point, i wish that BL production companies (i'm looking at you specifically gmmtv) wouldn't be so scared of making shows shorter than 12 episodes... like sometimes we don't need all that... Like i know that they (probably) have a formula but its actually starting to get on my nerves a little bit (a lot). Like why should i watch a show (*cough* gmmtv bl *cough*) all the way through when i know that every time i can accurately predict the last three episodes with a 95% accuracy

(someone looks at someone else (holds hands, hugs, calls on the phone, straight up just looks), they get mad at each other because "we've been dating for 5 minutes and you told me that you've loved me for the past semester but now that we are together you are 100% cheating on me and NO i will NOT listen to an explanation because i dont want to be wrong" (which, maybe i'm in the wrong for thinking this is silly, i've never actually been in a relationship :P, but even then, im not necessarily saying its silly, just that this is always what happens), they break up, they dont talk, they get back together (unsatisfyingly because...), they are still not able to communicate)

Maybe its just a slow year? anyone else noticing this?

I really wanted to post more opinions on shows i was watching (i like spilling my mind out somewhere) but like, the only one i had thoughts on was moonlight chicken and a few story lines from our skyy 2...

Anyways, heres to hoping that 23.5 is actually good when it comes out 💀 (and vampire project! but tbh honest to be honest i dont have high hopes for it after that trailer/pilot :( which sucks cuz i love boun and prem)

now that fionna and cake is done i just have... one little complaint...

before you say it yes i know its my fault for not watching adventure time before watching fionna and cake lmao

fionna and cake didnt meet my expectations. it surpassed them. that should be a good thing but for me, im not so sure.

i think this is gonna be a long one folks so strap in. also i have the memory of a gold fish so if i get a characters name wrong or something just bear with me.

so before i can really complain i need to talk about what went on before i started watching fionna and cake.

i always thought adventure time was cool. i watched some episodes as a kid but i never finished it. i liked the designs and the lore but i have a pretty good sense of telling what pieces of media id like and what i wouldnt (ex: my grandma told me id like harry potter but i just know that i would never). at the time i liked adventure time just not enough to watch all 10 seasons.

i knew some lore like betty becoming golb, bubbline hooking up, jake having kids etc

so when fionna and cake came out, i was excited. sure i wasnt planning on watching it until everyone started saying how good it was but by that point i figured itd be something id like.

i was pretty good at avoiding spoilers for each episode because i wasnt following anyone on tumblr who liked fionna and cake and the only spoilers i found were on twitter that i mostly just scrolled past.

so going into fionna and cake, really all i knew about the show was the trailer (specifically the first episodes intro, not sure if there was a trailer released of the actual intro or something) and a few screenshots. because of that the version of fnc that i came up with in my mind was... pretty different from the fnc we got. i love the fnc we have, but going in i thought itd be a pretty fanservicey slice of life show focusing on fionnas life as a depressed 20 something year old, with some magical parts mostly taking place in fionnas dreams. just something cute for the fans to watch without being that important to the overall story of adventure time. i guess ill just watch something like bee and puppycat for something like that.

i knew simon was in there but i thought hed show up in like, the 4th episode not in the immediate next one. and i also just feel like fnc doesnt focus on fionna and cake as much as simon. i get it, simon is basically the most important character in adventure time, i was just expecting that a show named fionna and cake would mostly be focused on fionna and cake. there are scenes that dawn on fionna and cakes narrative, but i feel like it just wasnt all that. like i feel like we dont really get to know them that well.

how did fionna first become friends with marshall and gary? how does cake feel about being treated like a pet for so long? how did fionna loose her other jobs? why couldnt we have focused more on fionnas depression? hell, even just simple stuff like what their favorite color is or what niche thing are they nerdy about?

im not trying to accuse the writers of being "sexist" or whatever even if i do think its a bit sad that fionna and cake kind of got side lined for simons arc. i know in adventure time marceline and bubblegum's relationship and just overall characters were an important part of the show. but i think the difference is that adventure time had enough seasons and specials to focus not only on finn and jake but many other characters as well, while fionna and cake only had 10 episodes.

personally, if i were to rewrite the series while still having most of the original story in tact, i would have a couple of more episodes focusing on fionnas regular life before being summoned by simon. id also give the series at least 15 or 20 episodes just so that theres enough time to focus on multiple characters. there would be more of a focus on fionnas feelings, maybe we could even delve more into fionnas romantic relationships because i feel like the ice prince part in her dream, as well as the winter king episode, was hinting that she might have a bad love life. i mean, knowing what i know about finns romantic relationships, it doesnt seem that out of character.

i still love fionna and cake tho, dont get me wrong. i just kind of felt a bit falsely advertised to and wished there was more focus on fionna and cakes arc. i might start watching adventure time just because i liked fnc, there are 2 shows i want to finish first tho. i dont need a second season of fnc or anything, i just wish there were maybe 1 or 2 additional episodes just to flesh things out. this is just my opinion.

top 5 star trek episodes that were so close to being something incredibly compelling and then weren’t

ough ok I’ve already talked about these first 2 at length but like 3 people total followed me back then so it’s new to someone at least. also this is long as hell. preemptive readmore.

1. tng 4x5 remember me is in a dubious position in that I do still like the episode as it exists and it’s certainly not Not compelling, but tng lacked a beverly and wesley episode, and i firmly believe this one should have been it. for being like the #1 key dynamic for these characters for the last 15 years before the show, we never got to see anything super interesting, and this episode seems like it’s set up to be that, and then it gets picard syndrome. this doesn’t even fully count because I still like the episode but I’m counting it

2. tng 3x23 sarek. the sarek/picard plot is fine, no real complaints there iirc, but the rest of the crew getting angry at each other should’ve had way more interesting character moments than it did. the arguments all being based off of surface level annoyance, rather than starting there and then digging into legitimate conflicts, really feels like a missed opportunity. it didn’t have to get into Darkest Secrets territory necessarily, I’m not looking for characters to hate each other given the constraints of episodic storytelling, but I think it would’ve been fun for characters to air some legitimate grievances with each other even if they’re the kind that could be neatly resolved with an apology at the end. idk I love writing about anger so this one stands out as a missed opportunity to me.

3. ok time for a little controversy i dont think the tng finale is Bad by any means but i don’t worship the ground it walks on yknow. i think the central storyline is generally good, and i was pleasantly surprised by the way it brought the series back to the beginning, both with the q plotline and the examination of how the crew dynamic has shifted, but it does....kinda fuck over a not insignificant number of the characters. troi/worf/riker drama consumes way too much of their storylines for something that showed up in the last half of the last season, and troi being dead so they can fight about it for 20 years is so. really? this is what we’re doing? idk troi at least has some good moments in the earliest timeline piece so at least there’s that, but given that they’d finally started giving her some solid episodes about her career aspirations, I was just kind of disappointed that that was the choice.

4. ds9 7x9 covenant. ive talked about this one at length too bc i just say every thought that comes into my mind all the time forever but this is me coming back at the end of the season so i guess it’s technically different. on one hand i understand that they wanted sisko’s ending to tie into dukat and sisko’s ending needed to tie into the prophets so like, i guess. but on the other hand i think this as a more bajor-focused storyline could have been really interesting? like how does sisko deal with this religious schism given that he’s the emissary of the prophets, but also acknowledging that some subset of the bajoran people are coming to terms with the fact that they feel betrayed by what the prophets allowed them to suffer, and maybe they’re right to feel that way (and like, maybe dukat allies with them at some point so they can put him in there, but the focus is still on the people). it was never going to be that and this is solely wishful thinking based on what i personally find interesting, rather than with some of the earlier ones where im like “yeah this feels pretty objectively stronger,” but i think realistically i’ll always want more depth on bajor and the bajoran people themselves lmao.

5. ok this is kind of a cop out answer in some ways bc i’m sure there are others i actually feel more strongly about and im just forgetting, but ds9 5x8 things past is just like. i wish this episode was just better written on a sheer technical level. it deals with things that are compelling in theory, like odo’s past working under the cardassians and the things he did to maintain what he believed was order at the time, and it also touches on garak’s ideology, but it handles all of these things with the light touch of a fucking sledgehammer. everything in this episode is said far too plainly and is repeated like four times to the point where it both doesn’t reflect the characters and kind of just gets annoying, and while it doesn’t have the significant structural issues the other episodes i talked about have, i just think this one was lacking on a basic writing level despite having an interesting concept, and i found that frustrating

additional notes:

- I was tempted to put journey’s end but the thing is like. the core arc is compelling to me but I have no idea what I’d do with the episode itself. the problems with the arc also mostly come from not having a s6 episode I think and that’s out of scope here.

- naked now was too easy everyone knows that’s a missed opportunity so I removed it from my lineup. same w/naked time being kinda too early imo.

- i had a harder time nailing down ds9 ones because i didn’t have as many individual episodes that came to mind as “close but a little off.” maybe with more distance i’ll have some, but so close to s7 im mostly just thinking of the broader arcs that got kneecapped by pacing issues. i did have a cheating answer that was “what’s compelling about inter arma enim silent leges is its placement as episode 16 of season 7 and the missed opportunity is that they didn’t use that timeslot to start the damar plotline earlier, thereby giving it more room to play out with slightly more believable pacing, and also that they didnt put a jake sisko plotline here” but instead i did my best lmao

#i know there are more......where are they. #also honorable mention to the version of prodigal daughter feat jake sisko that has taken shape in my mind but that's personal preference #anyway ty this made me think many thoughts and i may have to come back to it later also hmm #ask game #i have 2 more of these but idk that i'll get to them tonight i will do it tho

Overview: As a rule, I generally avoid Christmas media. I dont typically enjoy it, but this year, my romance reading buddy thought it would be fun if I gave Christmas romances a try. To give myself the best chance of success, I chose a book by favorite romance author, Courtney Milan. Overall, there were things I liked and things that I didn't, which resulted in my middling rating. I liked that this novella was full of Milan's focus on social issues; but I also felt the novella didnt really hit its stride for a few chapters. Perhaps my criticisms are due to personal taste, but even so, I'm giving this book 3 stars.

Writing: I don't have much to say about Milan's prose that's different from what I've said in the past. Milan's prose is fairly straightforward and does a lot of work while appearing simple. I never felt confused or lost, and as a result, this novella was a quick read.

Plot: The plot of this book follows young doctor Jonas Grantham as he attempts to win a bet he makes with Lydia Charingford. Jonas has been in love with Lydia for the better part of a year, but Lydia doesn't return his affections. For one, Jonas is sarcastic, pessimistic, and a little too blunt; Lydia, by contrast, is warm, loving, and optimistic. For two, he knows a secret about her - a secret that will cause her to be cast out of society, if discovered. Not daunted, Jonas makes a bet: he bets that by Christmas, he can show Lydia a situation that she can't find optimism in. If she wins, he'll never talk to her again. If he wins, she shall give him a kiss.

This plot was fun in that it hinged on some very Christmasy themes. Things like optimism and finding the bright side in dire situations felt appropriate for the holidays, and I was thoroughly engrossed by the bet (not to mention, the bet made for a pretty tight narrative structure; Jonas gets 3 chances to show Lydia something dire, so everything revolves around 3 tentpoles, so to speak). I also appreciated that the Christmas stuff wasn't too overbearing; while things like holiday trees and holly were mentioned, this book didn't necessarily feel like the romance was sparked by "the magic of Christmas." Being a Christmas curmudgeon, this was perfectly fine with me.

However, in my opinion, this plot doesn't really hit its stride until maybe 20% in (which is a lot, for a novella). We begin the book with a heavy scene in which Jonas makes a professional mistake that haunts him for years after. It's all well and good except the tone seems to change dramatically from there. We move from a heavy episode to Jonas a few years later, seeking out women and ranking them by attractiveness, all in the hopes that he can marry for unlimited access to sex. Given what happened in the opening scene, I got some literary whiplash.

I also think some parts of each protagonist's emotional arc could have been better resolved. Because this is a novella, there isn't the space to explore the healing journey that Lydia undergoes or Jonas letting go of his guilt. It's a shame because I would have loved to read more about them.

And lastly, without spoiling anything, I think I would have found this plot a little more compelling if Jonas did not in fact know who Lydia was until the first house call, or perhaps if his attitude towards women were different. As it stands, it feels like Jonas's pursuit of Lydia and the cavalier way he treats her secret is a bit inappropriate, but this could be personal taste.

Things do get better, however, once the house calls start happening and the characters interact a little more organically.

Characters: Lydia, our heroine, is very kind-hearted, which makes her admirable. Not only does she treat everyone (except Jonas) with warmth and respect, but she is thoughtful and generous, especially when she accompanies Jonas on house calls. I really liked that part of her arc involved accepting that her past did, in fact, bother her, but it wasn't so all-encomoassing that it consumed her. I also liked that her arc cenetered around allowing herself to feel, and recognizing when her feelings were both valid and unfair. My main criticism of Lydia is that I found it odd that she was somewhat prudish. Jonas uses medical terms for genitalia around her, which she balks at. Personally, it seems strange that after all she went through, she would object to such terms and conversation about sex. But perhaps that's just my personal read on the situation.

Jonas, our hero, didn't start out as likable, but he grew on me over time. I wasn't really a fan of his ranked list of attractive women, nor did I like that he wanted to marry so he could have unlimited access to sex. I did find his relationship with his sickly hoarder father to be quite sympathetic, however, and his dedication to truth (especially in the realm of medicine) was admirable. He did end up being a good match for Lydia later, when they share some emotional intimacy, so I don't want to make it seem like he's awful. I just have very particular tastes.

Supporting characters were actually quite sweet, especially the parents of our protagonists. I really loved Lydia's relationship with her father and the complete trust he had in his daughter, even after what happened in her past. It was refreshing to see such a devoted parent who wasn't overly protective or inclined on punishment, and it made for a much more tender relationship. I also really enjoyed Jonas's relationship with his father. Jonas's father is a poor, sickly hoarder who refuses Jonas's help, yet Jonas comes to visit every day. While it first appears that their relationship is antagonistic, we eventually learn of the deep affection the two have for each other, and watching their relationship evolve was very satisfying.

Romance: There were things I liked and didn't like about this romance, but as time when on, I ended up liking it more than being bothered by it. On the positive side, I liked the plot Milan built around Lydia unfairly blaming Jonas for what happened in the past, and Jonas blaming himself just a bit. It made for some great emotional intimacy and character growth, and I liked how it brought the characters together.

I do think, however, that some of the more physically intimate moments were poorly timed. The first time Lydia shows any kind of kindness or affection for Jonas occurs right after she breaks down in tears over her past. While I enjoyed the way Jonas helped her get her anger out and how he calmed her after, the turn to Jonas's erection and Lydia thinking about sex was a little jarring. I would have preferred it if the scene was just an emotional one.

After that, however, the relationship feels much more natural and sweet, and I ended up enjoying it. I liked how Lydia answered Jonas's bluntness and sarcasm, and I enjoyed watching her realize that Jonas absolutely adores her.

TL;DR: A Kiss for Midwinter is a perfect read for those who aren't necessarily into cheesy "magic of Christmas" romances. Featuring a heroine with a heavy past and optimistic look on life, as well as a hero who helps her release her pent-up negativity, this book is a worthwhile read, even if it takes a few chapters to get going.

I've gotta go to sleep but like i do love vash the stampede, i in no way think hes a flawless, like hes a creep to women which is the biggest flaw of the entire series, which sucks bigtime. but the art style of trigun is just so fucking good. like to date its my favorite like low tech post apocalypse and def my fav desert post apocalypse. i think they do the western thing very well also. and like its just so fucking cool where they take their art style and how much they do with such a simple and old premise.

vash being the classic, 'i refuse to take a human life no matter what' is done really well but like they do such a good job of juxtaposing it with how cringe and fail he is, and that is also a quality thats been done to death before and since in other anime. and im not really into many anime but ive been exposed to a lot of them through friends. but they do such a good job of like slowly turning the character to show more and more of him through the episodes and like it never feels like theyre not revealing more of him as a person but it also never feels like theyre just going through the motions and doing rhe same thing twice but more or twice but with a twist like every other show does

and then they give you wolfwood with his tits out for jesus and he he has no problem killing, just like everyone else. then you find out more about vash and youre like shit i see youre doing the age old oh he was so human and taught us how to be human even though hes a monster. but thats not human, and this guy has so much goddamn love in his heart for humanity and it literally tears chunks off his immortal body year by year, just because he refuses to cause harm

and like the show never tries too hard to make you feel that, i never feel like the tone or the characters were just tools to pry my heart open to these feelings, the show did such a fucking good job of just letting me feel how i wanted and even though thst was its intent, the atmosphere and plot and characterization just get you there and the show gets you there so gently and just coaxes the emotions out of you so incredibly patiently, all while never being boring. which is fucking incredible

and then theres wolfwood, who when met with the superhuman and met with this thing thats as close as anyone has ever glimpsed of something beyond the human, like vash is closer to god than anyone living, and hes taken with him just like everyone else is. but wolfwoods a hot priest who kills when he needs to even past this higher powered up dude pleading constantly with everyone to settle things without killing. and eventually, patiently, gently, he listens and he tries to do the thing that the show has shown us but never really told us clearly or pointed to, that the superhuman is the only one anywhere who does this. and wolfwood dies like anyone anywhere would if they tried this. vash is in many ways not human, the human who tried to live up to the extremely human ideals dies and the superhuman lives.

but ... eventually the superhuman, who youve watched be in love with humanity for like 20 episodes and youve watched him try to live as a human as much as he can, he fails and he has to break his code and act against his most closely held beliefs. he doesnt die after this, hes maybe never the same again but not extremely, but hes just had a little piece of his soul defiled so that the people he loved were okay. and then he just has to keep on going, having lost something, and having lost

and he learns so much about being human, by losing, by giving up you ideals when the stakes are high enough and its awful but you keep on going and you dont abandon those ideals but you also don't abandon those people

and so he goes on, having had his soul tread on, having been broken, and so much hasn't changed even with so much having changed. and he is human and he knows love and it fills him even after life shatters him, and he still cares, and hes got a cool gun for an arm

Yes Casey is the driver, I can see Casey love being the one behind the wheel. Also how she was with Sam I could see her as a back seat driver or like "why didn't you take this route" just asking stuff even if she tries not to. So in the end it's just easier to have her drive lol)

(While watching tv Izzie will have her hand resting on Casey's leg, or like sit close enough to where their shoulders touch, the way Izzie stretches out herself on top of Casey when they're in her bed. Izzie initiates hand holding)

Who falls asleep in the others lap: Izzie established cannot stay up for the life of her plus again we got the cazzie bridal style carrying scene!! (I think even more cuddled up to Casey she definitely can't stay awake, she'd just feel so safe and at ease. Lights out comes quickly lol)

Who wakes up first: Izzie is up first, again this is me seeing her as the caretaker of her siblings and not going on Casey's painful track running schedule. (Ik in that one episode Casey is up first, but casey was trying to avoid Izzie, anyways Izzie probably has to get her siblings up for school or just make sure they're fed and what not so I can see her generally being conditioned to wake up first.)

Who apologize first after an argument: I feel like this totally depends on the argument; who/what started it and what it's about. Generally both are good at apologizing and don't stretch out the argument (sorry if that's like a cop out and not a definitive answer)

Who is the nerd: Izzie without a doubt (i feel like she enjoys learning new things. Maybe she doesn't necessarily love studying school material all the time, but also I feel like maybe studying started as an escape or distraction from always being her siblings care taker and soon she just learned to love it. Or just loved knowledge)

Who makes the other one laugh the most: I say Casey, they both definitely make each other laugh but Casey takes it to another level. (Like when paige is at the door and Casey is like "do you think that's them here to kick us out in person". Casey uses humor to help Izzie unwind when she's too in her head about stuff.)

Who sleep talks: Casey, why do I feel like one of them actually slept tall? Am I hallucinating...what is happening. (Anyways I feel like Casey like if she had a nightmare or something she'd mumble in her sleep and like startle awake. Or of she's really stressed and overwhelmed she's in a more restless type sleeping state)

Who hogs the blankets: (I did answer this) But Casey hogs the covers, I'll add that Izzie is fine just curling up in a ball above the blankets and fall asleep. (Why did I have the thought they're doing laundry the blankets aren't dried yet but when they finally dry Casey finds Izzie sound asleep on the blanket less bed)

Who is the neat freak: I wouldn't say either of them are nec a neat freak, but I feel Izzie would want things in particular locations and Casey can just roll with it.

Who likes to surprise the other with random gifts: Izzie, though she doesn't spend large portions of her money she likes finding small things,knickknacks or like stuffed animals or just like a sweet, that will make Casey happy. (Having younger siblings that she actively has to care for has taught her that it doesn't matter the size of the gift or if it's sparkly)

Who buys the healthy food: Casey clearly didn't approve of Elsa's green stuff sticking out of the back so definitely Izzie. (Izzie enjoys her fare share of snacks but she knows the day has to be balanced with more than "empty" calories. She is patient though in finding the healthy stuff that Casey actually likes.)

Who has better music taste: I'd say Casey in that she would have a more diverse music taste, she'd expose herself to more genres and like eras of music (Izzie feels like a whatever is on the radio or popular on the music charts-this is not slander just vibes I get lol)

Who takes care of the spider: definitely Izzie (I can see her being the person who catches and releases it while Casey is just telling her to "squish it, squish it!")

More Jojolion Long ass texts

TOTAL SPOLERS TO THE LAST CHAPTER

I just have lots of thoughts about recent Jojolion revelations.

It took me a while but I think I´m finally at peace with the fact that the Calamity Arc was 90% sure the climactic Jojolion arc and that Tooru is Part 8´s entrance to the Jojo Big Bad Gallery TM, a supervillain group truly on the level of the Disney Villains. I´m only half joking lol.

It hurts bc I was (and still am) a strong believer on Big Bad Kaato. I LOVED the idea of a female Big Bad, especially one that gray and I was very curious about seeing her stand in a Stand Battle.I love evil ladies and that blinded me  I don´t even think Araki chickened out or anything, but that Big Bad Kaato clearly was never the idea for the story he had. Still, Kaato´s scenes, while too short, were damm cool, and Space Truckin´is a damm cool stand, but I still wish we had seen it more. I wonder if it could be used offensively? It at least can trap people from a distance, which is very useful. Im so angry bc its power was sooooo good for some JJBA weird moves, but alas.

One thing I love about Jojolion is that it completely goes against the normal tropes of a shonen/seinen battle manga in that most of the characters are just....people. It really is a Twin Peaks TM plot with more fighting. With the exception of the Rock Humans and Jousuke most of the characters are, like, some guy from town, at worst kinda shady and mean. We have housewives, a model, a divorcee, local businessowners, some doctors and an oddly viscious agriculture university student. Of couse Part 4, which Jojolion mirrors, had some of that, but IMO you really get more of a sense of normalcy on Jojolion, maybe bc Araki changed his way of writing a lot, maybe because Jojolion is more of an ensemble story, maybe because it´s less episodic. So you take these randos and give them superpowers and involve them in fights against supernatural beings and I think that´s part of the reason why the fights are so quick and to the point. Characters like Mitsuba or Kaato are really just normal people that happen to have stands so it makes sense for them not to do the whole strategic Stand Battle. And it bought us some awesome moments. Looking back maybe there were a bit too many “this character looked helpless but NO” but damm if it didn´t hype me up when reading it.

So, yeah, Kaato had her role, did her thing, and got Kei’d. And she was never evil, but rather, like Jobin, more morally gray and she died a martyr. And I wish both had more to do, but the part is long and Araki clearly wanted it to be a 3-way conflict with a clearer villain.....

Ngl I was at first really against Tooru and wanted him to be just a big antagonist and not THE big bad. After I calmed down and reread some past chapters I feel much more appreciative. I like how he really has a different dynamic, being a "mistery villain" but in a different way to Pucci or Diavolo. He really looks harmless and Araki clearly worked HARD with the misdirections. Theres a reason there were some fools (like me) still arguing against him being tbe antagonist. I checked his intro again back on the Doctor Wu fight and I really like how totally whatever the scene is the first time around. He absolutely could have been a minor character. Rereading it the whole thing is SO ominous AND everything Tooru says has a double meaning. I also like that his oddness can be chalked up to being a romantic rival to Jousuke, which threw off lots of folk (likeAs for WOU I'm also starting to like the fight more and more. The power over causality def is on the same level as power over time or space and I like how the characters are forced to think of loopholes and try out different ways to hurt him, playing with his "kill list" and such. I also like that WOU has limitations and that the Dr. and Tooru have to work with them to be deadlier, which makes them both so much smarter. I KINDA dislike how at the end he turned out to be so stupidly poweful that only Go Beyond can hurt him, which is not the worst Deus Ex Machina (Jousuke had to "figure" out his own stand --thats kinda symbolic for someone with duch a complex identity) but its a bit cheap for a 20+ fight.

Of course the real insanity is how unique of a stand WOU is. I dont think we had ever seen a stand this autonomous and smart? In my opinion thats what makes the fight so unique and Tooru so powerful. Its only balanced stat-wise in that neither Tooru or his stand buddy looks particularly powerful offensive or defensive wise in a conventional fight. Not that they needed it. Cant help but wonder how the hell could they add Tooru as a fighter if theres another JJBA fighting game. Maybe a double fighter?

Finally you gotta love the Magritte (hope im spelling it right) references with the doctor. Araki clearly was having fun and it added some "classic art" thing to the part. Kaato's attack and all of calamity also looked great, if we ever see Jojolion animated Im sure it will be a feast for the eyes.

Ofc maybe all this bs means nothing if Araki does pull a 180° next chapter. But thats the Jojo experience.

ANIME & MANGA I HAVE BINGED IN THE LAST MONTH: May 2021

I've Been Hunting Slimes for the Past 300 Years and Now Ive Maxed Out My Level: incredibly long name aside, cute af slice of life that suffers Same Face Syndrome. I'm still happy to watch it because of how feel good and fluffy it is though, Im probably gonna forget about it in two or three years tho. 8/10.

Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro: I found out this was a webcomic first and suddenly all the HORNINESS made so much more sense. A Femdom, Degradation, Humiliation, Dacryphilia Bullies to Lovers story disguised as a high school rom-com which, I'm not going to lie, misses SKEEVY CITY by mere inches on a regular basis. However, I'm a Dom/Switch and this entire relationship sets off my dom brain center like New York City just shy of midnight. So if you're into that sort of scene, this anime is for you. If not, it's still fascinating but you're probably gonna be a little put off by how mean the Girl!Bully is to the guy MC. Unless you find out something about yourself, in which case, congrats! Stay safe, sane, consensual, and learn about the traffic light system on top of safe words, I promise you'll have a better life in general after that. Still Ongoing, currently 10/10.

Fruits Basket: IM GONNA CRY I LOVE THIS ANIME SO MUCH???? The original anime came out when I was in... I think middle school and my parents were really strict on what I watched so I never got to experience the first wave and I never bothered to watch the show ever after I moved out of the house years later. However, now that I'm much older I honestly can say this is one of my favorite anime to date, and all the characters are charming, lovable, with their own problems that I can connect to or sympathize with, and I love the MC which is always a treat tbh. Except Akito. Akito can suck a sandpaper dick. I'm only on S2 tho so no spoilers! Anime 11/10.

Monster Girl Doctor: went in thinking it was gonna be a monster girl who's a doctor with a homoerotic assistant (her name is SAPPHY okay sue me for thinking it) and ended up watching the entire dubbed harem series. Honestly, I've seen worse and this one has consistent follow-through on interesting characters and backstory enough for me to shove aside the blatant under-monstrousness of the female monsters and the harem-ness of everything else. Dubbing is honestly really good, which is a treat, and the monster designs are not the worst and the MC is tolerable. Honestly, I don't mind having watched it! The mix of cgi and the traditional animation together work pretty strangely though, and it often doesn't flow super well. 7.5/10

So I'm a Spider, So What: Dubbed version which honestly isn't that bad. Took me a bit to get into it, but after realizing that it's got a mismatched timeline a la The Witcher, it made so much more sense. Heavily done in cgi, and you can definitely tell between the 2D and 3D animations, but not the worst in the world. I went in not expecting much but it ended up being an Issekai I can stand and even enjoy. On god has a decent story... with the spider. I'd be a liar if I didnt say I skipped some of the human parts just to get back to the best part of the show. 8/10.

Somali and the Forest Spirit: I'm so fucking nostalgic for this thing it makes me want to go and hug my dad. About a human girl under threat of being eaten with a monster-dominated world. Very obvious "humans fear what they don't understand" message but instead of the humans learning tolerance it's what happens when they get annihilated first so like, kudos for the mangaka for having the guts to do that. I cried like a baby regularly. It's really good, I watched the dub and ID WATCH IT AGAIN!!! 9/10.

To Your Eternity: Oh my god. O h my g o d. Fell in love on the first episode, ngl. About if an immortal being learned how to be a person from scratch. I love it. HOWEVER. Keep a box of tissues on you at all times because you're gonna need them. I'm only on EP7 because that's all that's out right now but just know. I love it. Not for everyone but certainly for my "what do we define as human and the human condition" ass. 12/10.

Those Snow White Notes: A sports anime without any sports. About shamisen playing which is cool because I never realized how cool this instrument was??? Its neat af. OP1&2 are by Burnout Syndrom so know theyre fire. Gonna be real, its pretty alright, but not extraordinary. You can tell they were using the characters as archetypes rather than actually characters which kinda kills a lot of the emotional value you could've had, but I'm still gonna watch it. It doesn't make me cringe as hard as other sports anime tho so I consider it toptier in that regards but if you're a big sports anime fan you might be bummed out by it. Every single musical performance is INCREDIBLE tho. A solid 8/10.

Toilet Bound Hanako-kun: THE ART OMFG IT'S SO GORGEOUS. Listen, if you took coptic markers and gave them an animation budget with some manga panel direction thrown in there, that's this anime. It's beautiful. Gorgeous. I'm in love with the aesthetic every second. Story? Really good. Characters? I love the MC and his evil little twin brother asshat. Demons? Not super imaginative but I'm carrying on happy as can be anyways. Dubbing? A bit shaky at times but I found the voices charming if a little off for some of them. I'm already waiting for the second season with popcorn at the ready. 10/10.

Prison School: I watched this directly after Hanako-kun and it was like I got slapped in the face by sweaty unwashed titties and some fedora wearing schmuck's piss kink. No character is likable or redeemable. I finished it, but at what cost? 2/10 and only because a character shit his pants and I laughed.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle: watched this right after Prison School and it was NECESSARY tbh. Its so CUTE and honestly, im not even kidding you, the fucking funniest anime I've seen in months. I watched the dub and the VAs are having the time of their lives working on this anime not just giving it their all but literally just going ham. Its great. If I read this im sure id be bored outta my mind but the VAs giving it a joyous performance make it an insta fave for me tbh. 9/10.

Sk8 the Infinity: i watched the dub with my bro and I can confirm that its a spectacular show because we both loved it and we have vastly different tastes. Incredibly SUSPENSFUL AND STRESSFUL for an anime about skateboarding but we finished it in a single sitting tbh. The last episode is not dubbed for some reason but we still loved it. Like if Free! was less obnoxious but the only fan-service here is Joe ♡ a beefcake who owns my lesbian heart. I think there's exactly one named female character tho and I legit couldn't tell you what it was if there was a gun to my head. So, over all, 9.5/10.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: I'm going to be entirely honest, I went in thinking it was going to be a boring isekai of no value. I was right about the Isekai part. It was honestly pretty interesting and focused on nation building like you're playing civilization rather than the usual "Get Stronger" narrative or "Get Some Pussy" narrative most isekais take which is delightfully refreshing. Granted there are flavors of that in this which means it doesn't alienate the big isekai watchers out there, but it's not the whole dish and it doesn't make me want to cringe the same way others do. You've got a slime MC just vibing and building a nation of monsters nbd. Does lose points for making the female monsters more humanoid than their male counterparts but makes them back by only doing perfunctory fan-service and nothing that makes me want to cry... except the butt sumo episode but in fairness it was all a terrible dream. Literally, the MC refuses to dream anymore after that. solid animation, decent voice acting, decent story, made me realize how HUGE this is in the Light Novel community???? There's like 18 fucking novels and that's WILD. 8.5/10.

MANGA:

Spirit Photographer Saburo Kono: a one shot special by the mangaka of The Promised Neverland! Honestly a really delicate touch of both super creepy and really touching, and I'm not gonna lie I'm bummed that this isn't a bigger project but the single chapter makes it a good taste for their style. I've been wondering if I wanna read/watch The Promised Neverland and now I think I will. 10/10

Deranged Detective Ron Kamonohashi: from the mangaka of Hitman Reborn comes this Sherlock and Watson derivative! Not even 20 chapters out yet with a sort of spotty schedule, I honestly love it even thought it's exactly as you expect. HOWEVER. Kamonohashi the "Sherlock" character uses mental pressure to kill all confirmed murderers and it's up to Toto the "Watson" character to save all those people before Kamonohashi kills them! It's just recently introduced a "Moriarty" family of crime lords (not a big spoiler don't worry it was obvious) so the tension surrounding Ron's past is amping up rn. Personally, I think the art is GORGEOUS, the characters engaging, and the story quick enough to keep my interest. Most mysteries are solved within a chapter or two so you're not stuck 20 chapters into one locked room mystery which is just peachy tbh. RN, 10/10. If this gets an anime, I anticipate a legion of fangirls who ship the two main characters along with their many friends. I've been alive too long to believe otherwise.

Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro: Yeah I read the manga after I watched the show. A slower build than the anime, but it works for the format, if theyd done the same with the show then I don't think it wouldve done as well. Honestly? Cuter tbh but just as horny. You dont start really LEARNING about your character until like, chap 65 tho and no real "drama" happens until like 75. A good chunk of the chapters are like 8pgs so its a breeze to get through. I love these slow burn idiots of the century. 9.5/10 because you can DEFINITELY tell the mangaka does hentai too.

Yugen's All-Ghouls Homeroom: one-shot by the mangaka for Food Wars, it's no wonder there's this constant perviness from the MC, a guy who can see and exorcise spirits. Takes place at an all girl's finishing school with KICK ASS monsters tbh, kinda bummed its not longer. The MC? Blatant monsterfucker who is also a CONFRIMED monsterfucker???? Idk i vibe with that single emotion. Everything else is hit or miss. 7/10 for monsters and cool concept, lost points for the MC very pointedly being okay with admitting he'd wait for the teenagers to be adults tho. Creepy af. Could live without that.

Hell's Paradise: I finished the entire 127chps in 3 days and I was really enthusiastic about it 90% of the time thinking about how deep it was and then I actually thought about it and I ended up being very neutral about the whole thing tbh. The art is fantastic tho, but DEFINITELY deserving of the M rating. Tits. Tits everywhere. But not tits to be ecchi over, no, monster hermit tits on beautiful women-ish figures. Now generally I give that a pass but a huge theme in the story is that men and women are "no better than one or the other" but like, lady tits are what you see 99% of the time. Men tits are few and far between. I call bullshit on most of the "deep" themes is what I'm saying, so it's like the mangaka was trying for those deep thoughts but missed the margin a little too far for my preference. That being said, the MC is a married man who loves his wife which automatically makes him my favorite character so like... idk so many good things, so many misses, but overall really spectacular themes and imagery. Unique but classic all at once. It's getting an anime and I have NO IDEA how much censorship they're gonna be doing but they're going to be doing SO MUCH. Oh yeah, and one guy is a plant/human hybrid who fucks a 1000 year old plant-hermit which makes him a canon monster fucker. And one canon non-binary character who I, a nonbinary, actually like. So like... gosh I've got mixed feelings. 8.5/10.

Choujin X: From Sui Ishida, mangaka to the mega hit Tokyo Ghoul comes this brand new manga!... Of one chapter, lol. Not really binge-y because it's just the one chapter out right now but I'm already keeping my eye on it. The grasp on anatomy in the art is PHENOMENAL and you can see Ishida flexing his art skill which is great. Can't give a true rating but I'm giving it a tentative 9/10 because I'm excited to see more.

Shag&Scoob: technically not a manga, its an ongoing webcomic I binged an subscribed to in one day and I just think it deserves more attention. Starts off funny with "what if Scooby Doo had a gun" and has been led to "what if all cartoons are aliens that survive and receive their powers by the humans that love them in an epic war with Martians." On god, its good. I finished the current series in a couple hours so it's a breezy read, highly recommend it. 9/10.

To Your Eternity: Yeah I watched the anime and then finished all current 143 chapters in like 3 days. GOD IM WEAK. I don't buy physical manga unless I know I want to remember the story forever and I'm already budgeting for the current books out. Yeah, this is a good series. That being said, definitely not for the faint of heart or those who suffer under common triggers like suicide, molestation, death, etc. It's all framed as bad and necessary to the story don't get me wrong, but it's there and has lasting affects on the characters. Incredible story telling by the creator of A Silent Voice. Keep tissues nearby at all times. 12/10.

-I don't know what I expected s2 to open with. but danny portal incident in more detail was not it. (also, I hate to break it to you, sam, but danny's parent's bigass ghost hunting rv def chugs more gas than those vehicles, lmao. unless it runs on ectoplasm or something...)

-WHY WAS DESIREE IN THE SEWER? HAVING TEA WITH IT DOWN THERE?? Her making the giant cow come alive is a boss move, we've almost had all of my fav animals as ghosts now <3 I also don't like how sam was expecting danny to just, haunt the place so the cars wouldn't get sold? I KNOWWW I know she's 14 (and I had a very annoying phase like this, I think I mentioned in a previous post, I GET IT) but they're HIS powers, and messing with (1) dealership will not really put a dent in sales overall because they can just move the cars to another sales lot, and it certainly wont change the industry anyway, it's more of a minor annoyance for (1) location. Also, usually people who work at car sales places work on commission, so if they dont make a sale, they don't have money to pay bills, or eat. sam baby if u wanna be an activist you need to like, actually look into these things. with as much money as her parents have, she could be doing a lot..more useful things for causes she cares about? it's frustrating to see someone with resources who doesn't know how to use them. but shes 14 so again. cannot be really upset :/

I know, he also agreed and walked into the portal. but. she made the choice to redo it SO quickly (even if it was because someone had to beat desiree) and danny, during their fight, brought up a lot of stuff sam's done in the past, meaning he was holding onto those memories and resentment was building. (I KEEP SAYING HE LOWKEY NEEDS THERAPY, BUT I THINK MOST EVERYONE IN THIS SHOW KINDA DOES) which...is a red flag? and then they didnt even GO to the party URGH I know she tried to make up for it, but it really felt like Sam fucked up and barely faced any consequences and got everything she wanted in the end. I KNOW it's a kids show obv they aren't going to go too in depth, and she undid the damage, kinda, but...I DUNNO how to articulate it but it rubbed me the wrong way.

I know they always have horrible side effects as most genie-granted wishes do, but...c'mon, I'd at least TRY to be like 'I wish no ghosts would hurt anyone in my town' or 'I wish vlad would lose his ghost powers forever no matter What and also forget about my mom' LIKE. SHIT DESIREE IS SO POWERFUL. rewriting reality powerful, basically!! appreciate her. respect her.

-aww, sam helping tucker pass the nurse's office so he wouldn't see because he's afraid of medical stuff? very sweet. I also don't like medical stuff, I've gotten a lot better at handling it tho. but seeing blood and needles still makes me feel lightheaded x_x

-FOLEY, BY TUCKER FOLEY. I want to make my own perfume, that's so cool. even if his first attempt isn't good, he's pretty consistently shown to have an inventor/entrepreneur streak in the show, so like. I can see him inventing or making something (or several somethings) that make him $$$ when he grows up :) proud of my creative son

-I know the 'creepy abandoned hospital on the edge of town' is a joke and the creepy hospital trope is so Worn Out, but in my town we actually DO have a hospital like that! my dad was born in it, but its not in use and hasn't been for, like, 20 years! it needs to be torn down but I think the city doesn't wanna pay the money. the inside is horrible, spray painted and broken glass and shit everywhere. but there's still like, rusty equipment and fucking DOLLS all over the place. the cops drive by it pretty frequently to make sure no one is like, breaking in. (because of water damage, some of the areas really aren't safe. also, asbestos, but people still go in anyway) but also, some of my town was used in a filming for a stephen king show. So it's lowkey spooky all over. just a fun personal tidbit :) to lead into saying, any hospital abandoned for any period of time is NOT safe to quarantine these kids in JKSAHDKF like I KNOW it's a ghost trying to do this, but NONE of these parents are even like, 'well, why dont we keep them in the regular, working hospital'....YIKES. this hospital looks pretty accurate to the one in town. grungy and spooky.

-we finally see danny doing space-related stuff!! him and his friends stargazing to open ep 3 of s2. cute :) until, GHOST PIRATES!!!!! ...ghost pirate captain is a small child?? VOICED BY TAYLOR LAUTNER???

-oh, the easy listening is ember's song instrumental slowed. 'vapor drone' THEY VAPORWAVED HER!!! ember in a pirate outfit tho >>>>. and the cruise being called m.bersback JKASDHJK. ember adopting a little pirate brother is also pretty cute. concerning this teen and little kid have such bad opinions of adults, like, who hurt you?? (how did you DIE ALSO?? im always lowkey curious about that. we know desiree died at an old age, but her ghost form is young, probably mid-20s, so I wonder how that sort of thing works...its a more mental thing, isn't it?) but ghost team-ups are always cool to see, even if ember bailed after danny took her guitar. I guess she probably thinks youngblood can handle it (which, he's been owning danny this far in the ep, so...fair)

-danny taking control of the kids SO FAST. he makes a pretty great leader. no one is surprised, im pretty sure I said I think he's the most mature of the trio, once again, correct, because he's taken on so much responsibility already. all the teens suiting up in the jumpsuits to go save the adults and taking the ship over with a BLIMP. OKAY LETS GO. this feels like it should be a mid finale or straight up finale.

-...speaking of finales. why is ep 4-5 of s2 combined into a 50 minute episode? I havent even clicked play and im concerned. weird placement, like, this season JUST started and we're getting a two parter? okay...why are the episodes placed like this? why not put this at episode 10 or something, for a mid-season thing?

ALSO I feel like her reason for not liking ghosts is valid, like you haven't really explained the full story to her anyway! she doesn't seem to have any other friends after being booted from the a-listers so im like :( but seeing them kick butt together again was nice <3

-valerie's dad is possibly the most useful adult so far, with that ghost shield expansion!!! and valerie saving vlad and danny, even tho shes been thru it already, shes still so good!!! this family rules.

I feel like she's hesitating because they're friends and it might make it weird between the trio (poor tucker would be third-wheeling) but if u snooze u lose, u gotta GO after what u WANT girl. smh this is a No Tsundere Zone. 😤

Australia Wildfire Relief Charity Stream!

Hi people. Last night the crew accomplished something amazing. More than 30k dollars will be donated to help the Australia wildlife affected by the fires. Thank you so much to the people who donated! Viv gave good pieces of information to the ones who donated and by getting to 25k and later to 30k she rewarded the fans with the real names of two of the protagonists. Here is the list of facts she said, enjoy. 

1.       The song that sounds for a couple of seconds when Alastor spins Charlie is Put it on the Ritz from Fred Astaire  

2.       Dealmakers are a group of sinners in hell. They have a lot of power because they deal with souls. Is not recommended to be near them.  

3.       Why vaggie is in hell? That’s spoilers

4.       The Goat bois Razze and Dazzle would like or dislike someone depending on Charlie’s attitude. They would get along with people Charlie likes (eg. Vaggie) and in the same way they wouldn’t get along with people Charlie hates.  

5.       The Headcanon voice for Rosie would be Barbara Streisand in Hello Dolly, because she is an adult lady but with the voice of a young woman.

6.       Alastor’s is a “food snob” which means he is a perfectionist in the kitchen. If Gordon Ramsay would be in hell they would get along very well.  

7.       Angel likes to cook, he has low standards for drugs but high ones about food.  

8.       The songs of the pilot can’t be on Spotify because is a huge process to put them there and viv is busy at the moment. Also the songs doesn’t have an extended version, what we hear in the pilot is all that is.    

9.       Viv doesn’t think Alastor sleeps, but if he does, he would probably be in the corner of the room with his eyes open.  

10.   Vox is very manipulative and an attention seeker

11.   Valentino has a lot of staffs. He constantly brakes them on people heads so he has to replace them a lot.  

12.   A headcanon voice for Vox would be the one of Mark Hamill

13.   Vox watch Tv game shows, he likes commercials too.  

14.   Angels watch soaps operas and trash realities to judge and roast the contestants

19.   Alastor is like 7 feet tall and Angel 9, they are really big. (She still doesn’t have a size chart but I guess with those confirmed heights someone could calculate the other’s)  

20.   There will be a husk plushie? In this moment they are making new plushies and new merchandise of Helluva, but because plushies are expensive, is necessary to do only characters on demand and Viv doesn’t know how many people would be interested in buying a Husk plushie.  

21.   Arackniss would be redesigned when he appears in the show alongside with other old characters of Viv that could appear in Hazbin.  

22.   Velvet is a trendy stylish social media sinner and she gets along with Vox because they like technology and they try to know the most about technology advances. Something that separates them from Alastor because he doesn’t like those new artifacts at all.

23.   Velvet is really good at making food and potions

24.   Stolas is a born in hell demon and he is “a different level of demon”. Something that will be explored in Helluva.  

25.   Viv likes the fanon human version of Alastor. She says is very accurate because human Alastor would never have the same hairstyle he has now as a demon

26.   Viv doesn’t want the Voice Actors of her shows “to double up” (one VA making the voice of two or more characters), she likes every character to have their own VA, with the clear exception of background characters.  Because of this, there could be a new voice actor for Millie, while Erika would stay as the voice of Loona.

27.   After some thinking, Viv has decided for Cherri to be Australian.

28.   Viv would prefer a movie instead of a videogame about Hazbin.  

29.  Angel can play the accordion and other instruments but…not very well

30.  Husk can play the sax.  

31.  Vox and Velvet have real names, most sinners do. They prefer to be called by nicknames in order to leave their past names and human lives behind.

32.  Angel Dust real name is Anthony!!! 

33.  VAGGIE’S REAL NAME IS VAGATHA!!

34.  ….Alastor’s real name is Alastor (lol)

35.   Al doesn’t like nicknames so he decided to use his real name in hell and not change it (but he must have a last name isn’t it?)
