after six years of the game being out and after three and a half years of me actually playing the game i have finally beat botw. did u know finishing video games is. fun,,
#hey its not as bad as norn9 where im only a third in after six years. and rhythm thief took me a genuine decade#im very good at taking my time#MY IMPRESSIONS its a good game :) i think i had a little over 100 hours by the end. one thing about the final boss fight though -#it made me kinda miss like true classic zelda scripted boss fights LOL but lots of fun!#some of the dlc stuff i couldnt do like the champions ballad and the sword thing RIP had to look up the cutscenes later~#theyre tough! but also my playstyle has always been a bit of. just run and go for it#planning and stealth is not my strong suit. by the end i was running directly up to guardians and just killing them before they killed me#i can eat kebabs faster than they can shoot lasers. i am unstoppable#the soundtrack was nice! subdued obvs since its open world#but the standout tracks are really standout. of course i love rito village night ver being dragon roost island#and the hyrule castle theme turning into zeldas lullaby in the internal parts hit me#and of course the main theme is iconic. i like the version with the hard break in the middle the most i love that cut so much#i know people edited it out and in the live version its not as harsh because its live#but i LOVE IT i love it so much. mix of synthetic breaks with a fantastical and traditional sounding theme. awesome#that whole 3 and a half years before i got a copy of the game (i wanted to beat skyward sword first) i didnt look up like anything#didnt pay attention to anything people were saying. heard something about it being open world. heard some speedruns were like an hour#and i heard the theme. and i listened to that theme on repeat for all those years. so so good#now i will probably do that for totk- not knowing anything about it for three years until i finally play it LOL thats how it is so far#people have told me about it. but truthfully i wasnt really listening. sowwy. i was focused on botw orz#but i wanna play something different now. take a break. also wait until i can find someone selling totk used for under 70 cad KJDLJFKDSJDKS#i am NOT paying nearly a hundo for a videoed game nintendo you cant make me#maybe now i should finish all the other games in my backlog. or i could start 5 new ones. hmmmmmmmm

IDW SONIC READERS, PLEASE READ THIS!!!!
I am begging you. On my hands and knees. Begging. More so than anything else I’ve asked of this fandom.
Please please buy the Fang miniseries when it comes out
Tumblr media
Don’t just read it. Buy it. I will admit that I’m very guilty of reading through a lot of IDW Sonic through…less than legal means, and I know I’m not alone in that regard. But I think it’s really important that for this miniseries in particular, you actually go out and buy the damn thing. Show your support with your dollar.
Really think about it for a second—they gave Fang his own miniseries. Fang! An underutilized, underrated fan favorite for sure, but hardly a mainstay of the series. I’m sure that this was at least somewhat prompted by Superstars, where Fang is a major antagonist…but Bean and Bark weren’t in that game, and it already received its own online promo comic prior to the game’s release (notably, with Fang as the star).
Classic Sonic stories have also exclusively been relegated to one-shots in IDW, not a full on miniseries like what Fang is getting. Basically all of the IDW Sonic miniseries we’ve gotten so far have been plot relevant side stories to the main IDW comic that focus on side characters with little to no involvement from Sonic himself. Tangle and Whisper, Bad Guys, Impostor Syndrome…the only odd man out besides this Fang miniseries is Scrapnik Island.
Really think about it for a second. FANG is getting his own focus comic BEFORE KNUCKLES.
And that’s why it’s so important that we buy it.
I think Sega is using this comic to test the waters to see if people like Fang and want to see him in more future projects—be it comics, games, or even cartoons. But there’s more to it than just that.
See, Superstars hasn’t been doing that great. I know I said in an earlier post that people seemed to like it, but I retract that statement. It was damned by faint praise at launch, and now most of the discussion I’ve seen surrounding the game revolves around its flaws (chief among them being the middling OST and that the Steam version stealth installs an Epic Games service along with the game). No sales numbers have been projected as of writing, but it’s definitely been beaten out by Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2.
So, Classic Sonic games aren’t doing too hot right now (I’m sure that many modern fans are jumping for joy at the prospect). But the classic characters are.
People really like the extended classic Sonic cast, just as much as they love the extended modern cast. From my experience, the two fan favorites are Mighty and Fang. Fang stands out to me in particular for a couple reasons: people were really upset that Sega specifically said no to Fang, Bark and Bean coming back after Ian snuck in a reference to them in IDW Sonic #3 (using their old team name from Archie, the Hooligans), and the fanmade 16-bit remake of Triple Trouble, Fang’s debut game, received private praise from many members of Sega and Sonic Team. People like Fang and the media he’s in, and Sega is starting to take notice. That’s why we’re getting this miniseries.
That’s why it’s so important that the miniseries sells well. If the big boys at Sega and Sonic Team see Superstars’ iffy reception but see Fang’s comic sell above expectations, then Sega will want to continue to use Fang (and potentially other “classic” Sonic characters as well) in more narrative driven projects. That means modern Sonic.
“But Sega won’t let any classic Sonic character into a modern Sonic project!” I hear you thinking. And to that I say, so? Sega changes its mind all the time. Remember that whole two worlds nonsense? That was thrown out with in Tailstube. Characters debuting in Boom and the comics were previously barred from the mainline games, but they’ve broken that “rule” in both Speed Battle and Frontiers. Hell, they’ve even been talked out of some of their sillier comic mandates, like characters not being able to wear different clothing.
For all their flaws, Sega does listen, and money speaks louder than anything. If this miniseries fails, Sega will just assume that people aren’t hot on Fang or the extended classic cast anymore and throw them back in the bar. But if the comic sells well, then Sega might take it as a sign that, hey, people like this character (and his two lackeys), we should put him in projects that fans are more interested in. Mighty and Ray probably wouldn’t be too far behind, especially given Mania’s success. Whether that means comics or games, modern or classic, who knows. What’s important is that it sends the right message to Sega, and they will listen to their consumers. That means us. If we don’t support this miniseries now, we might have to wait another thirty years for another chance.

i know i said i wouldnt be ranting about totk anymore, but i realized i didnt really count the sage dungeons as story (dont ask me why) so i thought im gonna write a better summarized version of my opinion about totk (i have around 60% of the game, all lightroots, not yet all shrines (missing like .. 20 or so, know the reward), not all krogs (dont know the reward), not all mayoi (half know the reward?) )
(in no particular order)
good stuff (in my opinion)
the. MUSIC! god the music is good, it was good in botw too but now with much more different bosses it really is probably one of my fav soundtracks of all time (most fav are all three phases of the end fight, the pre-fight to that, the build up one before all of those, Frosgeira (wind tempel boss) the glorious mASTER KOGA and more tbh)
the build up and end boss fight(s) are fantastic, i dont think im ever not gonna have my heart racing when approaching it (despite now skipping almost the entire way bc i set a teleport thing right before it) just bc the build up is so well made and the music(again) is such a banger and the fight(s) itself is so fun too, tbh i keep wanting to play it just bc its so fun
i LOVE how many themes play into the music (endfight alone had so many layers, fav probably is ganondorfs classic theme and calamity ganons both in the same piece among much more, and daruks theme in the fire temple)
(edit) YOU. CAN. TOUCH. DA. DRAGONS!!!!
ganondorf
ganondorfs design (x3)
ganondorfs weapon designs
ganondorfs voice (japanese)
everyone elses voice (japanese)
all voices (german)
thE YIGA!!! i love everythign about them and am so happy they got to be more than just some mini mission
(edit) also the fact that they get zonau tech to work without any special ghost powers is so ????
(edit) koga can summon and use zonau tech unlimited?? hes so cool
NO stealth mission!! (as far as im aware)
bosses are very different from each other
main dungeons are not too short and not too long and mostly fun (mostly bc i personally didnt like the gerudo one), i love that you can still somewhat cheese them and do them your way
sages felt like they got a bit more involved
(edit) you gotta do more stuff before getting to the actual dungeons and i really like that, feels less like a fetch quest but that you are actually helping
(edit) each sage is actually there in the dungeon and is required for it, which is great!
each settlement saw a much bigger danger/change (tho that has more impact if you have played botw) and its problems felt much more real
shrines are well varied tho i think overall a little easy (only got stuck on two so far and later solved them easily bc when i first started them i was tired and exhausted, no brain left lol)
NPCs felt less flat + more bigger sidequests that felt like they had more impact
cool new monsters + designs
the underground was pretty appropiately creepy
the sages abilities are neat
you can refight bosses!!
stable points system is a neat way to encourage you using them
weapon fusing is neat
(edit) the forest of the krogs being corrupted like that is both creepy and a neat nod to oot
(edit) the vai gerudo outfit being gone!! (one) evil has been defeated
(edit) the health bar going so far off the middle in ganondorfs second phase is honestly just funny hnjdfdjk unfortunate that you only need the master sword and with a few perfect dodges his health melts like butter in the summer
(edit) the music when dragondorf transforms sounds so sad .. its probably meant as a oh no world is actually ending sad but i like to think of it as a oh god what did he do to himself sad
the scene where rauru seals ganondorf kinda fruity
(graphic, animations and the overall world is still fantastic)
bad stuff (in my opinion)
everything zonau they feel forced into every bit of the world and its history (i know them being somewhat alien is intentional but not like that) it feels crammed into places they werent before and shouldnt be and it makes it all feel very artificial
the glyphs/dragon tears/memories really ruined alot for me, while it gave you insight as to what happened, it felt like it showed you too much and too little at the same time and i think it would have worked better if it was all in text for once if even at all, so the past stil stayed a mystery and youd be left wondering
timetravel .. really wasnt necessary and felt more like an excuse to get rid of zelda + make her the poor little sacrificial girl again + and to make her turning into a dragon as tragic as possible, like nothing but a stepping stone to the big reveal tm
shiekah tech being not just fully irrelevant but practically erased, wiped off the world (i know about the literally last guardian parts in hateno, it feels more like an oversight tbh, purah technically using it ... tho i dont think she ever calls it that, the purah pad is jsut the sheikah stone but worse), there being no good explanation, no remains, nothing as to why it would suddendly stop working and why even the titans and ESPEICALLY the shrine of life would be destroyed, if anything why wouldnt you enshrine it as a memento to history it was such a focus in botw and so well integrated into the world that it being fully gone, not even old overgrown, or visibly reused to build homes etc., or remains of how they built the og shrines in the underground feels like a HUGE missed opportunity (seriously it would have been so easy to make the ancient shiekah base their tech on old zonau tech, without stealign the gocus but buildign a connection)
all of the continuity problems, totk feels like botw didnt happen and the excuse of 'they didnt want to confuse new players' doesnt make a lick of sense in my eyes bc; its supposed to be a sequel, if you want it to be a standalone game then dont call it a sequel- if you start to play a game with the sequel instead of the first part its your own damn fault if you get confused; if anything, it would have been a good opportuntiy to make people interested in botw so theyd buy and play that one too
ganondorfs character is very flat, you basically get to know nothing about him (yuno even calls that out midgame but its never elaborated upon nhgfrdfhkk)
the zonau and their kingdom of hyrule is presented as this so perfectly good thing to such a degree it turns creepy, the end cutscene with mineru going poof was kinda uncomfy to watch tbh
the reward for all shrines being essentially a reveal as to who the hero in the tapestry was and it being, of course, some weird half zonau is the lamest answer to a mystery i didnt want an anwser too, it doesnt feel like it came naturally either (again my point of the zonau being forced into everything)
the shrines (zonau) feel so much more unnatural than the shiekah shrines, alien in a bad way and not in a good way + really are like a bad reskin of them, their sudden appearance and use is so much less logical
back in botw i was doubtful of if the shiekah tech wasnt going to far too modern tech and cause it all to feel like a bad mix of modern tech and medival fantasy, but they balanced it perfectly (tho the eponator zero was very much the limit imo) but the zonau tech .... oversteps that line i think, it really does feel, more than anything else, that it was just bc they wanted the stuff to be in there bc it might be fun to play around with, im not against that kind of stuff mind you im all for fun, but it feels a little like they thought of a box with endless stuff to play with first and a zelda game second (if you get what i mean)
quite a few quests or things in the game seem like they are more and then end in a dead end (the worst of all is impa saying she wants to go research what could help zelda turn back, and i was excited and convinced that shed give me a quest to find some mcguffin that would do that after i beat ganon but there wasnt anything you could actually do; less bad one but disappointing nonetheless the dongos were mentioned and treated like this big awesome thing from alot of NPCs all around the map and then when you find them they are bascially just gem vending maschines)
the way zelda turns back and link gets his arm back is incredibly unsatisfying, none of them even have something like a scar, or mark from it all, zelda spent thousands of years as a dragon (a transformation that was said to cost your soul but i guess that wasnt true) and link had his arm bascially eaten by miasma and he gets it back like it was never lost, zelda returns all intact as if nothing happened, getting blasted by some magic tm by two ghosts that were supposed to be long gone is the solution to all problems!!
(edit) link losing an arm wouldnt just be super intersting but also lend itself well to lead up into the next game where his prothesis is the focus and source of abilities
(edit) zelda got done so dirty, instead of her actual interests and character to shine she just gets shoved into yet another crisis surrounded by strangers in a world that looks like hers but isnt, and all she does is beg the ancient sages to swear to help link and sacrifice herself again (can you call that fridging? bc she sure feels like she got fridged) i like zelda and i dont like how much i didnt care about her and tbh im angry at the game for that
(edit) both link and zelda not even slightly changing in the years btween botw and totk kinda boring, like a haircut can only do so much
(edit) sonia really is the wife that dies to make husband sad thing isnt she? i get that gan had to get his hands on an enigma stone but i feel like there had been better ways to do that, the fact that she dies that easily is almost funny honestly, why does ganondorf even have weapons when he can just one punch people to death (tho i find it funny to imagine he can literally just kill people in one punch but hes too prideful to do it most of the time so he always uses weapons to look more cool)
(edit) so many new characters that you barely get to see or interact with, i really ... couldnt get myself to care much
(edit) zonau tech being so irrelevant to the games story while its also the focus is .. weird, its really just play doh for the players and nothing else honestly
(edit) monsters mining sonanium feels strange bc ... they dont do anything with it? the best thing i can think of is that they were told to do that so link cant .. upgrade his battery thignies? but then again you could just destroy the mines and remaining constructs to stop it .... also you really dont need anything zonau tech related to beat gan?
(edit) ganondorf beign so utterly uninterested in their tech is weird considering how he dealt with shiekah tech (and we KNOW it can get corrupted) he should be a tech nerd tbh
my twitch VoD of the first time beating the game getting muted at the credits despite me talking over it
nitpicks (in my opninion)
(edit) ganondorf should have a bit more of a boar inspired design, as treat, i think
(edit) the enigma stone wandering back to ganondorfs forehead even after transforming is? weird? i guess an excuse for da epic last stabby but still? (how cool would it have been to have to plunge into his mouth and break it there or something)
(edit) the underground gets a lil old after a while, the fact that its pretty much the same everywhere aside from some .. very strange flowing magma is a lil boring
(edit) ganondorf could have gone way more crazy with abilities and all that, imagine hed spwan multiple miasma arms on himself when you get him to a certain level of health
(edit) i miss unique weapons, there arent even normal axes around anymore, everything is about fusing really, i miss the cool shiekah tech weapons
(edit) the forest of the krogs being largely irrelevant is kinda weird
(edit) mineru being the sage of spirit still is kinda meh, the robot is neat but i thought tauro or purah would be the surprise sage tbh
(edit) the bosses were a little easy (i did boldo gohma rather early and did it without even getting hit)
you cant talk to koga normally :(
you cant find koga again after the last fight :(
you cant refight him (to my knowledge) :(
i find it very strange that yuno seemingly lost daruk shield, despite him having inhereted it in botw
the sage powers are not .. very great integrated, while its fun to haven them run around and help you fight, to actually use their powers you have to chase after them, something that in the heat of a battle is very annoying to do, constantly activating the wrong on or them losing their charge up when they get knocked over is like trying to herd a wild pack of geese while a three headed dragon is shotting laserbeams at you
some widlife just disappearing all of the sudden is very strange (like the rhino in hebra)
some new houses or settlements would have been cool, that the material things at the sides of roads are really only for you to play around with and not to build anything that lasts
you cant fight ganondorf (non dragon, even the dragon is locked to that evening sky) in the sunlight, night or rain, i would have loved to fight him at various times of day
their refusal to show any kind of blood is honestly turnign serious scenes into very awkward ones, sonia just getting punched and she dies with not even like, losing some spit from the force or something, or the fact when you defeat ganondorfs second phase he acts mortally wounded but doesnt even look scratched is just :/
amiibo stuff while neat being included its really mostly just bloating your inventory, if i wanted 5 vaguely different link outfits then i would have gotten the amiibo for it
why hide the -now-totally-not-phantom-ganon-armor- behind such a long questline and then .. have that NOT be upgradable
they put in a house building thingy and then not let you have a roof or a tree or something :(
at some point stable points jsut get you more and more of those free staying over night tickets that i maybe used .. once at the very start and now its just accumulating in my inventory
only one new horse coat pattern :(
satori now only being a thingy that shows you caves is kinda boring, i loved the mystery around it in botw (additionally, that it shows you caves you have completed already kinda sucks)
the end of the shrines isnt that cool anymore, speaking to a mummified monk that gives you essentially his last remains of life energy is so much cooler than a statue of the oh so awesome god king and his wife
the many references and reuse of old names is neat but together with timetravel etc. it easily leads to confusing and fighting among fans for who is more 'right' and its just .. tiring
(edit) considering how much of the advertising was about the sky islands i wished there were more and bigger ones, the underground (that was a little one sided after a while, it all looking the same rly) could have been alot smaller if the sky was bigger instead
(edit) i wished there was more of a sense of .. lost life in the ruins you find, from all races, the ancient ruins are jsut some bridged and ceremonial stuff and i wished there were more like .. houses, like people actually lived there and it not being all around beign a platform for you
(edit) the fact that the half zonau hero exists mean either rauru and sonia had kids but those were clearly not important enough to ever show nor mention, or there were other mixing of them before they all mysteriously died out the fact that the ancient hero was half zonau means their genes survided till then but somehow it never came up? the tapestry still exists and impa and purah say like its a well known fact that the hero looked like that (not at all close to any modern species) when you talk to them while wearing it (the fact that the hero armor thingy is very reminiscemt of ganondorf is like some backtreading bc we were theorizing about the hero having been ganondorf once and they wanted to stop that .. but the more funny thing is the HC of its a descdendet of rauru and ganondorf nhjdfknhdgkfnhkfd) (edit to add to the HC; the game being a big battle about child support is funnier than it should be idk if nintendo knew what they were doing adding details like that)
all in all it just feels like missed opportunities, lost potential, and more a game build around some game mechanics they really wanted to get into than telling a neat story, espeically so bc they called it a sequel, most of my complaints wouldnt be there if it was some alternate thing instead
i probably forgot stuff but if i think of more i will add them later with a little note that it was added in an edit (sidenote, i find it funny how much more nuance that whole conflict would get if rauru and ganondorf were bitter exes bfdrjfbdfndk)

Readers Unconscious
Alright, it’s been a long time since I wrote for any CoD characters, so forgive me if they seem OOC (but hey, it’s fanfic so who cares?)
Request: "I am so excited for the campaign. But I also had a request sent to you in the past, about how the Cold War characters would carry you if you were to pass out. Could I change that to the Task force 141, Los vaqueros and shadow company? Maybe add Woods? Also, they have feelings for the reader but they don't want her to know 👉👈"
You're wish is my command love<3
———
Simon 'Ghost' Riley-
Ghost is used to people being in his personal space. He wants the enemy to know that he's not scared of them especially with how close they are. So he tries to wake you up at first, shaking you a bit, and there's really no time to sit and wait. He was going to just carry you with both arms but he has all that extra equipment on his chest and he doesn't want to make you uncomfortable. So he kinda just.. pulls you up onto his back, like a piggy back ride. He couldn't care less on personal space in a time like this so he pretty much just lets you take all the time you need.
Johnny 'Soap' Mactavish-
This man has feral energy. We've seen first hand his level of sarcasm and what his humors like. But he can also be very serious, so when you're out like a light, he panics before trying to radio Ghost on what to do. However he's not picking up and that leaves him alone. He tries to find the best position to pick you up without making it awkward, considering the feelings he's had tucked away for awhile. But the easiest way for him was to just last you across his shoulders like basic training does. He's not the best in stealth so it leaves room for him to reach for his gun without dropping you
Alejandro Vargas-
My man is very very respectful, he doesn't want to touch you in anyway that makes you or him feel weird or bad about it later. If anything, Rodolfo is most likely with him, so he can always ask to have him throw one arm around his shoulder while he grabs the other. But say it's just the two of you, then what? He's straight to the point about things, so he's not wasting any time. He wants to get out of this situation fast, he also wants you to be safe, making him speed up the process. He doesn't wear many stuff, so throwing you over his shoulder will do, so even when you wake up he'll just plant you right back on your feet
Phillip Graves-
Graves is respectful when others are around, but when they aren't, all that, just goes out the window. He probably wouldn't like it when you do pass out, most likely reprimand you later on. But he also can't help but feel bad, he wants to show you he can be caring, so not taking it out on you is him being nice. If anything, he'll have one of his shadows carry you instead of him doing so himself. But if they're all out in different positions leaving just the two of you. He's already somewhat upset and having you unconscious gets a little more on his nerves. Don't expect him to be gentle, he keeps one hand on his gun and the other is grabbing the little handle on the back of your vest and dragging you along. Just be grateful he didn't leave you where you were, that's him being generous
Frank Woods-
I feel like his is pretty obvious, but that might just be me. But remember when Woods had to drag Mason? It's like that, but it's not. He likes you, and the thing you two have going on is something he wants to see where it leads to. He's very touchy feely with you, and has no problem carrying you bridal style, we all know he has a chaotic personality, so carrying you like this is probably the most gentlest way he could carry you in this situation. He somewhat takes it serious within that time, careful not to hurt you or put you in an uncomfortable position. He checks on you every now and then just to make sure you're still breathing

THE MISSING SIMS FROM 1 and 4 (Custom Stealth Hood)
Tumblr media
This has been a long time in the works. @profesionalpartyguest has probably stopped talking to me over it; @justwierzba has probably forgotten about it (and me); and @knut-rocketman has probably stopped caring about it, if they ever did.
This is a custom Stealth hood, with some townies, and a lot of ancestors, containing sims from The Sims, and The Sims 4. It also has lots for 7/9 families, including the families which you care about the most. For myself I call it Caldera Lessaules.
Continued below the cut:
From Neighborhood 1 we have the Roomies (bless their sapphic souls). From Old Town we have Claire Charming, and the Hicks. We also have the Snooty Patooties, because they’re iconic and someone had a headcanon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From The Sims 4 we introduce 3 families from my Willow Creek - Pancakes, BFFs, and Spencer-Kim-Lewis - including the all important Lydia Spencer (she’s a townie). Also say hi to the Sims 4 Roomies (the New Girl spoofs), the only original family in Oasis Springs (unless you count Johnny Zest, but he’s all tied up with the Landgraabs). We also have the Harris family from Eco Living Newcrest Harbour whatever that pack and town are called.
But don’t just think I’ve left you with families with nowhere to live, there's lots too!
The Pancakes, BFFs, SKLs, and Sims 4 Roomies have the strict recreations-within-limitations - without CC - you know and love from Willow Creek. The Cacti Casa is a new recreation for this hood, the others are cleaned exports from Willow Creek.
For the Sim Lane Roomies, say hello to my labour of love ✨inspired✨ recreation of 10 Sim Lane. It has Foundations! The floor and wall coverings are close calls to the original. Claire Charming and the Hicks have their houses also recreated with Foundations. I found all three Sims 1 recreations really fun to build, and I love how their energies have translated across, especially for the Hicks’ Trailer and 10 Sim Lane. There is also an additional variant of Claire’s House I made for personal reasons.
Tumblr media
The Snooty Patooties and the Harris family’s houses haven't been recreated - the latter because I don’t actually own the EP, the former because I would have to base it off of Marka93’s as I have no clue how to get the Downloadable Sims into my Sims 1 game. Besides, they’re added extras, just slip them into your Main Hood, Viper Canyon, Downtown, Bin Lots, it's up to your imagination! Feel free to export the lots and plop them in your main hoods, or just delete the subhood, its fine, I guess…
Tumblr media
I hope you enjoy this labour of hate and love. Its an essential ingredient in my own Uberhoods. I genuinely miss these sims - especially the Sims 1 ones - so much in my games otherwise.
Special Thanks :
This version of “Caldera Lessaules” is officially a testing version, however nothing core is expected to change. That said, make a backup before adding it to your game. I am not responsible if your savefile becomes a BFBVFS and you don't have a backup. I may decide to add or tweak things in the hood, like ancestors, additional townies, etc, or roll-out fixes if people find errors which I haven’t picked up, but please do not hold off downloading if this is something which you'd think you'd love!
The creators mentioned in the first paragraph made most of the ancestors between them. ProfesionalPartyGuest also made the Harrises. Without them my hood would be ancestorless, which depending on if you care about Character File Count, is a good or a bad thing.

Power Fantasies are personal
Tumblr media
Playing Baldur's Gate 3 I realized something about myself and the way I play video games or games in general - and the way I perceive stories.
See, I always found myself kinda enstranged from the usual power fantasy. The "be the biggest, baddest guy, who can use force to archive everything, while also having everyone fall for them and being able to fuck whoever". A lot of modern media - especially the media aimed at an assumed male audience - kinda follows this kind of storytelling though. Power fantasies are about physical power. About being physically strong and having the biggest baddest spells or whatever. Which is also what most games in the end cater towards. And I mean, I can totally have fun beating up monsters, yes. But also... when I do play TTRPGs that is usually not how I go about things. In TTRPGs I will usually try to find a way to avoid combat as a player.
And this gets me to BG3, where I after some thinking decided to play a bard. Just for the fun of it. And this really kind of got me to realize what actually my power fantasy is.
My power fantasy is to talk sense into people.
My power fantasy is to be able to go to a person who is doing shitty things and make them see that what they are doing is actually shitty and convince them of doing something better with their abilities and what not.
I think a part of that is just the realization that in the end by convincing people you can do a lot more good than you can do by just forcefully basically killing everyone who is in your way.
It is also why I got kinda annoyed with BG3 in the third act. While Acts 1 and 2 allowed me as a player to convince a lot of people to join my side - both good and bad - this wasn't true in act 3 anymore, where often enough you ended up being forced into "Kill either A or B". You know, my main examples are from the main plot, where I ran into that problem with both Gortash and the "Emperor vs Orpheus" thingie. Where I was sitting there like: "I have +16 on persuasion, I should be able to convince them of another way." Like, if a DM on a TTRPG table told me to decide this, I would have been like: "I want to at least roll on this!"
Because, yeah. From my point of view the game allowed me to play my power fantasy for a long, long time. Until it stopped allowing me to do that suddenly. And that was just extra frustrating. It was basically the equivalent of a game taking away your fighting ability suddenly for the last 30% of the game and forcing you to do everything in like stealth or something.
And, yeah... I think we kinda do need more games that allow for a more varied kind of player approaches and power fantasies. Especially in stuff that claims to be a roleplay, you know? If I am playing a roleplay I want to, well, get a chance to play the kind of role I want. Rather than being forced into one specific role (aka the classical cis male powerfantasy of the stoic, but strong man who all cis women wanna fuck).

TC tag game
Thank you for the questions and for tagging me @spudodell.
Rules: Answer the questions and tag other TC fans!
1. "He would not fucking say that" only they did and it's canon. When/who?
Ralph to Laurie in the ‘break-up’ scene, as soon as Laurie starts asserting himself:
"Don't waste time, Spud. It's childish to start an argument about whether we love each other, the moment I go and sit on the other side of the room”
What a horrible thing to say!  Run like the wind, Laurie!
2. Did they kiss in the study? Yes/no + why you are 100% correct about this.
First let’s take a moment to appreciate Spudodell's recent spot of a stealth kiss (can you re-blog that one too, I couldn't find it!) at the beginning of the ‘break-up’ scene when Laurie comes through the door, which to me is absolutely definitive and ground-breaking (not in a good way for me, but still….brilliant detective work!)
On the kiss, I am in the ‘no kiss’ camp, but it is not possible to be definitive.  I feel that Mary plays a lot with echoes, parallels, and contrasts, and for me ultimately I feel the lack of a kiss is meant to be a contrast to other moments in the book, not an echo.
But what has exercised me more recently is, kiss or no kiss (but especially if there was a kiss), this scene in chapter two really gives me the creeps.  I have been reading around the topic for some schoolboy Ralph fics and Alec/Ralph (watch this space on that one), and it has become ever more clear (Alec Waugh’s commentary ‘Public School Life’ being the best reference on this) that Prefects really were like Gods.  He points out that prefects had almost as much power as but even less accountability than teachers due to the ‘no-snitch rule’.  You can see it in the discussion of Hazell and his confessions, and how contemptuous the schoolboys are of him for 'confessing' (or in modern terms, reporting an inappropriate relationship).
In some ways, a kiss could explain quite a lot about Laurie’s behaviour and attitudes to Ralph in the book.  But to be brutally honest, I’ve had enough of creepy behaviour in men being disguised as ‘romantic’ in heterosexual romances (Mr Rochester, anyone?) and the thought of encountering it in a gay context in such a beloved book is just too much to bear.
So, no kiss for me!  He was still behaving pretty weirdly but that’s understandable in the circumstances.
3. Mandatory question about Ralph's alleged tattoos.
I’m sold on the fic that has him get a tattoo of his sunken ship.  Love the co-ordinates of Dunkirk idea though!  But I think Lux’s one is more realistic.  My reading of that being that he got drunk and wanted to fit in so he got a load of random not-very-good-ones.
4. 53 vs 59 edition: quote a line or paragraph that is better in the edition you like the least.
I favour the ’59 edition, as I broadly feel the cuts make it read better.  But there is one exception.  When Laurie is daydreaming about swimming with Charles, Mary cuts this line:
“Take off your things and jump in."
Apparently skinny-dipping was a step too far for the US audience!  Scandalous!
5. Which TC character would feel right at home here on tumblr dot com?
Bunny but not in a good way.
6. Tag yourself at Alec's birthday party.
I’m Laurie as in sitting in the corner checking out the books.  Not as in going on a rescue mission with some drunken guy.
7. Post a TC meme.
Sorry I couldn’t find the source of this – not exactly a meme but it made me laugh!
Tumblr media
8. Easy to talk about who deserved better. Who deserved worse?
Not that I know what happened to them, but Andrew’s relatives who tried as hard as they could to ruin his life, as if his parents dying wasn't bad enough.
9. You can break the fourth wall (at any point in the novel) and say a single sentence to our protagonist, Laurie Odell. What do you say?
I would tell him not to let Dave bully him into leaving Andrew without seeing him.  Because he knows with every fibre of his being that Andrew would not want that.
10. What's a question you have about TC? One you haven't found an answer for yet.
Too many to say.  It’s the unknown unknowns that really get me.
Tagging @gayskogul @telltaleangelina @jeork @alovelywaytospendanevening @black-bentley and anyone else who wants to play and would like to raise their head above the parapet!!

opinion on ffxv after 75 hours of playing (and one hour of running in circles to level gladio's skill up) (still haven't played any of the dlcs but i'm gonna take a break or something for a few days because i severely neglected my university stuff and spent most of the last week obsessively playing this game)
i love this game. am i tired? hell yeah. would i want all these hours back? hell no.
the game is a mystery to me.
the sidequests are genshin impact open world quests level (which means that if i hear anyone talking, i'm pressing the skip button because i don't give a fuck). you listen to someone yapping about unimportant stuff and they make you collect the same shit over and over again. peak game design.
the main quests are good but the ending made me age 10 years in a week. there's NO NEED for these tragedies. boy you literally have the power of gods on your side and they tell you the only way to get rid of the big bad villain is to kill yourself? sounds like bullshit to me. also why even bother if there's only a few thousands people left in the world. you already lost, all this stuff had to be done 10 years ago to have any meaning. and there's no way the world didn't just implode or something when the sun stopped rising. the true ending is noctis getting spat out of the crystal and realising everyone is long gone because there's no sunlight.
the mentally ill hobo could have been more cooperative too geez. i'll be honest i like him much more than the six. and everyone's like "oh gods are helping you" no they hate me and want me to die for no reason. i'd rather join forces with ardyn and try to take them down. even if he did a lot of questionable stuff (cough- killed my bride -cough-cough- and her brother -cough- also kidnapped my friend and tortured him-)
the hunts are kinda fun when it's a big monster but when it's a bunch of goblins i'm like,,, why did you call me here? ngl i thought all hunts would be like the first one, it was truly cool. there was some kind of plot, some interactions with my friends, some stealth, the monster seemed really tough (meanwhile me, fighting the lvl 99 adamantoise 65 hours later: the ring of lucii go brrr-)
the dungeons are ass. i thought nothing could be as disorienting as daggerfall's randomly generated dungeons but they really managed to do a miracle with ffxv. although the dungeons in ffxv are not scary at all, that's the difference.
the open world is okay. there're some interesting places (when you first see the big mysterious creature in the lake you're like do i have to fight it?? can i get closer to it?? what is this??) and the nature is beautiful. altissia looks majestic but sadly there's not much to do. i appreciate the hard work tho.
using regalia was a delight. when you want to take a break and just look at the landscape you can just sit still with a controller in your hands and enjoy the ride. really therapeutic. don't drive at night when you're low level though... listen to ignis. ignis is always right.
the camp life is by far the best out of all games i've had an experience with. there's so many little details everywhere that you cannot help but adore your companions. it's the way every time you make camp you get a bunch of photos prompto took since the last break. it's the way your companions talk to you almost all the time and you truly feel like you are on a road trip with your friends. it's the way gladio calls you out on your bullshit and afterwards you want to bite his head off each time you talk to him. it's the way ignis cooks for the entire party and makes you help him sometimes. i just love the way friendship is portrayed here.
what was not as good is luna and noct's relationship. there was not enough of luna. yes she loves noct but why? yes noct loves luna but why? luna literally appeared in the plot for two minutes and then tragically died. i think it's really bad. also imagine not seeing your bride for 12 years, when you finally meet her again she immediately dies, then you spend 10 years trapped in a crystal, fucking die and then get to marry your bride. honey it's been 22 years since i last talked to you in person. i'm NOT marrying a random woman in the afterlife (no hate for luna, just this love story didn't seem convincing enough). hopefully i'm gonna see what they wrote in the dawn of the future soon (please pray so that my amazon package doesn't get lost 🙏)
the music is incredible. the woman who wrote the soundtrack is my goddess and i am a devout worshipper 🙏🙏🙏
so, why is the game a mystery to me? because no other game could make me endure 75 hours of boring side quests. i managed to play hogwarts legacy for 44 hours and i despised that game when i finished it. i despised it long before i finished it. but not ffxv. they could make me do all this boring stuff again and i would do it (not for free tho because i've got better things to do with my time 🤣)
i enjoyed ffxv a lot. it also made me depressed for a week because ending a game like that should be a crime. i think i'm gonna do a few last quests after that but there's not much left (and i'm not looking for more because if i think i am done then i am done). not sure how long episodes gladiolus, prompto and ignis are gonna take, but they're also in my plans (no ardyn tho, gotta go watch some playthrough). there's also anime and a film so plenty of content for me. and i am waiting for the arrival of my book 🫡
(noticed that there's nothing about the combat. well it's because i don't care. i don't like combat. i don't like it in any game. i prefer to flee)

Okay so I picked up another demo, now that I'm done with Unicorn Overlord demo. I am a wee bit late to the party on this, but decided to try Triangle Strategy. And this is. A very different experience.
I played for about an hour and a half. Approximately 10 minutes of that was the one (1) map. The entire rest of the game was scenes, and a bit of exploration. In comparison to Unicorn Overlord, which is incredibly fast-paced, this game is veeeeery slow.
The story itself isn't bad by any means. But it's also not that interesting? Like it's fine, but I'm not wowed by much. the protagonist is fairly bland, his friends are fairly bland, Frederica is cute but not particularly interesting, your dad having Old Man Disease at 40 is tragic I guess. The background cause of the war and the fact that all parties seem pretty on the level right now is the most interesting angle. But it hasn't exactly gripped me.
Which is really weird! I'm like an hour and a half in, with barely any gameplay, and despite all this story and character stuff, I have very little to say about them. I don't feel like they're any more developed than the Unicorn Overlord crew, which wasn't exactly a hugely developed group either. It's just an odd, slowly paced experience that doesn't have a whole lot to show for that.
As for the minor gameplay I did engage in, it's fine. Fire Emblem-esque grid movement, but you only attack on your turn (barring counter skills), and positioning matters. After each turn, you need to determine which way your character faces, and the direction you attack from matters, in as much as striking from the back is a sure-crit. There's elevation tactics as well, but that didn't seem to save the cav dude who got fucking annihilated when opponents got behind him and wombo comboed his ass to high hell. Was probably supposed to use healing items but it's map 1 and permadeath isn't a thing, your ass is grass dude. I admit that I think it's a little more involved than I think it needs to be, but I did at least recruit a girl whose stealth tactics are interestingly integrated by having two actions to facilitate getting behind the opponent to attack, and what I assume is the armor knight who moves less distance having the counter skill. Oh, and if you surround them, your ally that attacks from the other side will combo for bonus damage.
The...I forget what they're called. The 3 point stock things you can spend for skills. They're...odd. For characters like Frederica and butler-man, you need 2 for your special, and recover 1 every turn, so you can't do that every turn. But then you have the protagonist's delay attack, or Heal. And these are 1 point free actions. So I seem to be allowed to do this infinitely without any kind of issue. And...maybe it's just me, but nonstop infinite heal seems really fucking good, dude. it's also very...reminiscent of Octopath Traveler, in that it very, very feels like endgame is a matter of maximizing these points for a specific character to spam their big attack to deal with huge HP values on bosses.
I did take a peek at the forge system. Fun fact, I generally don't like forge systems. I dunno, man, just trade out the weapon. The system eats a lot of money, and takes consumable resources, which...okay. Depending on the availability of resources, I might hate this one. We'll see.
I still need to get more gameplay to feel like I have a sense of how the gameplay is. And hilariously, am still waiting for the story to actually ramp up. I'm guessing that will happen at exactly the moment the demo ends.

The Continuing Adventures of a D2 Player in D1
I am partway through the Taken King expansion now! I have comitted Regicide, explored the Dreadnaught, and even bribed Shaxx to make me a sword. And I have more thoughts about it!
The Bad
Killing Oryx was... kind of anticlimactic tbh? I know the real death is in the raid, but it genuinely felt like just one more mission. There's no real feeling of completion like there is in D2's DLCs, at least partly because D1 is very sparse on cut scenes and character interactions. It feels like you kill Oryx and no-one gives a damn because there's so few character moments to round it off. 'Oh, killed a Hive god? Must be Tuesday.'
The trend of not explaining anything continues. Several of TTK missions leading up to killing Oryx involve Eris shouting at us repeatedly that 'you must become ascendant to follow Oryx!'. No, she will not be explaining what it means to be Ascendant or why it is so important (I mean, I know because it's been nearly 10 years and I have read the lore, but if I hadn't it would be utterly baffling)
There are these patrols you can randomly get where you pick up a mysterious signal. They have several steps and require you to do random things to progress them - the patrol text is (deliberately) glitched and resolves as you get closer. For example, I had one where one of the steps was to do an emote, another step was to kill hobgoblins etc. I love this idea, do not get me wrong! I like the idea of picking up this random signal. But as far as I can tell, these patrols don't lead anywhere. At the end, Ghost says 'At least we know what the message says, even if we don't know who its from'. AND THEN NEVER TELLS YOU WHAT THE MESSAGE SAYS. I have to wonder if this was something that was meant to lead to content that got cut, or was a hook left that could be used for something in future. Possibly something to do with the Nine would have worked, given the random nature of the messages.
*sob* Getting good armour is such a pain. And confusing.
The jump down to the area with the first secret chest in VoG is *horrendous* especially since you can't mantle. There's no ledge to jump from opposie the entrance. (I have not run the whole D1 VoG, but you can break in by doing certain things without having to do the plates).
Who the hell decided that the destination material for Mars, a planet which is predominantly a red-brown colour, should be a RED-BROWN ROCK?!
The Good
One of the missions in the lead up to killing Oryx involves you having to stealth through Crota's End raid area to steal a piece of his soul. The enemies have a red ring around them you need to avoid or you'll be seen. It's actually pretty cool! very atmospheric too, and nice to have a mission which isn't about brute forcing your way through enemies. I think the stealth system would need some tweaking to make it genuinely fun for more than a one-off thing, but it was a nice change of pace!
The Dreadnaught is a really awesome patrol area. It feels huge, there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore, hidden bridges you need Ghost to see, tunnels to crawl through. Plenty of secrets. Gloriously creepy. I am not even close to finishing exploring (at least partly because I keep getting lost - my sense of direction is garbage in games)
There are different Vanguard Strike playlists available: Legacy, Taken King, and SIVA crisis. Vanguard strikes are different depending on where you are in the story!!! I did not know this going in. There's one strike I've done a few times on the Legacy playlist, where a Fallen Archon escapes from the Prison of Elders. I got it yesterday on the Taken King playlist. Starts out the same, then partway through you go into a cave system. Previously, those caves have involved fighting Vex. Went in last night and it's full of Taken! That was a shock. And progressing, the rest of the strike is full of blights and when you reach the Archon fight, the Archon has been taken! It was a really cool thing to experience, especially going in without knowing beforehand. Doing something I thought I was familiar with and having it change up on me was great. Similarly, the Omnigul strike (the one the Disgraced strike is based off). The dialogue has changed up to kind of move the timeline and have it set after Oryx's fall, and the first room, which has previously contained only Eliksni... now you get ambushed by Hive too! I really love the idea of Vanguard strikes evolving with the storyline - it makes them feel more connected to the world state. I know we've had updates for Lake of Shadows and Arms Dealer in a similar way, but god i would love more!
The vault is split into sections so you can see just your armour, just your weapons, just your other assorted junk, instead of one 600 space mess.
I am getting so much practice using Golden Gun. In D2 I have used Blade Barrage almost exclusively, but since starting D1, where Blade Barrage does not exist, I've started using Deadshot in D2 as well and I'm having fun with it! I even got into a crucible match in D2 and got several golden gun kills which was nice!
I'm more willing now to use supers in D2 instead of always saving them for the boss XD It is a space magic game and I should use the space magic more.
Other Thoughts
I cannot decide how I feel about the currencies+destination materials On the one hand, I am constantly running out of glimmer. It's much more scarce and hard to get and the amount you can carry is much much lower (25K I believe) and you need it for levelling up weapons and armour just to get the perks. Collecting destination materials is necessary and can be kind of a slog (also you need different Ghost Shells to get the trackers for different materials). I know getting the exotic swords later is gonna be painful because you need to get a material that has a low drop rate. Legendary Marks are random drops from doing activities too, and you need them to buy any legendary gear. You can hold 200 of them at a time, and some of the stuff costs 175 Marks. On the other hand, it makes acquiring weapons and armour something a bit more special and valuable. In D2 I can just go to Banshee and buy whatever I want, and make that glimmer back in approximately ten seconds on any destination. I currently have max engrams with all the seasonal vendors, and a whole lot with the ritual vendors and I decode them just to junk whatever comes up a lot of the time. Destination materials... exist. And have no real use. I feel like the ease of acquiring weapons in D2 means I don't appreciate them. And I don't branch out and try new weapons much. I junk the majority of the random drops I get without even bothering to look. In D1 I end up trying out pretty much any purple weapon that comes my way because I don't have that many to choose from. Needing to acquire destination materials means that I spend more time exploring and poking into places I wouldn't normally bother to in D2. Will that side room on the dreadnaught have Hadium flakes for me? IDK, better check it out because I need them! So my rate of play feels more leisurely - wandering a patrol zone without any real purpose feels more rewarding, even when I'm returning to places like the Cosmodrome. So yeah, conflicted about this. We'll see how I feel later on when I have played many more hours of D1
y'know, I would love it if they brought the Dreadnaught back as a destination, maybe for Episode Heresy (the Hive one) after Final Shape. But not the Dreadnaught as it is in D1 - the Dreadnaught after 10 years of being derelict, picked over by scavengers, fought over by different Hive factions, slowly rotting after the death of its master. I think there's a lot that could be done with it - new Hive cults forming in the depths? Taken monstrosities? Some of the descriptions of areas on the Dreadnaught also talk about how Oryx kept specimens from conquered/destroyed species there, and tortured and experimented on them. Ghost at one point comments that there are things even the Hive fear and have yet to be able to weaponise. So... what else is still trapped on the Dreadnaught?
Shaxx has a line when you bring him Oryx's sword Shaxx: That sword shard you carry... is that the dreaded Willbreaker, Sword of Oryx? I have not seen such a blade in many years, Guardians.' I know it doubtless means 'hey, I was on the moon during the Great Disaster. I saw some shit', but the way it's phrased is so specific that it's a great jumping off point for fic ideas XD

Beat the Vah Ruta beast in Breath of the Wild. I continue to be unreasonably annoyed by my memory of Shadow of Mordor. This is how you do a big setpiece! You actually use the mechanics and abilities that the player has been using for the past several hours! You do not under any circumstances suddenly become a weird stealth QTE game that has nothing to do with the rest of the game!
I almost have a reasonable handle on controls, the Water Ganon fight is much easier once you get the hang of the dodge counterattack. I am slowly internalising that the fights in this game are actually very, very slow, and it's better to just take your time and exploit weaknesses than to try and obliterate an enemy before they can even turn around. Every enemy attack has like a three part windup. Bad habits learned from like, Warframe and multiplayer competitive where reaction time is king.
Gotta go find the Korok village so I can get more weapon slots, I'm finally at the point where I don't always have a junk weapon I'm willing to dump when I find something interesting.
Speaking of Koroks, the Korok seeds are a really good way to encourage fucking around in the world. Some of them are really funny like "pick up this weirdly placed rock", it demonstrates such a good understanding of the mindset an open world sandbox puts you in.
Yes I know everyone has already said these because the game came out in 2017. Give me a break. I do like that by not caring about nintendo news I basically have no idea what I'm getting into here, I would not want to have a Horizon Zero Dawn situation again where I watched a letsplay figuring I'd never get to try it and then bam! I had it on PC.

💖🥰❣️🤡 heehee hi I love yuu-chan
HIIII cries cutely.... tank u.... but also FGKHJSFD I SEE U PICKING MUSHY QUESTIONS... GRINS.....
💖 - How and how often do they try to impress their partner(s)?
this is choromatsu we're talking about here so i think literally anything she does is impressive to him LMAO... wakes up in the morning drooling with the most tangled bedhead in the world hes like OMG YUUCHAN SO CUTE. makes the most basic breakfast for them YOU'RE A GODDESS ON EARTH YUUCHAN. etc etc
she likes impressing him with hidden talents though. like "hey did you know i can tie a cherry stem with my tongue?" "hey did you know i can juggle" "hey i can fold shirts like they do at the store in less than 5 seconds" but also... things she thinks are talents but shes so bad at. one of their first dates would be at her fav arcade and she'd lose so badly at the crane machine for an hour and he'd be staring at her with googoo eyes the whole time bc wooooow her dedication.
🥰 - What pet names do their partner(s) use for them? How flustered do they get by them?
she already asks everyone to call her yuu-chan if they're gonna be hanging out a lot... but hearing it come from choro gives her butterflies ewww (audience awws). i think both of them are a little embarrassed by being called pet names - choro in the way where he secretly loves them yuu in the way where shes like oh god i am going to die of cringe. i think the upper limit she'd tolerate from him is something like angel or sweetheart. you do some booboo bear sweetie pie type of nickname and she's covering her face and hiding. calling her something like yuu-tan would kill her instantly. in an uno reverse though she takes great pleasure in calling choro chororin and watching him squirm LOL
❣️ - What are their love languages?
i think her biggest 2 are words of affirmation (giving) and physical touch (receiving)... she's a little shy about pda (at least when shes sober lmfao) but likes to be someones object of affection. not particularly vocal about being needy and generally pretty independent but when she does get her paws on choro shes googoo booboo mode clinging to him like a koala and everyones like boooooo get a room. she loves to hype choro up and be his cheerleader when he's feeling unsure about himself ^_^ i think she could probably genuinely get him to find a job and keep it. she wants to see him like himself and succeed at what he tries to do!! also lowkey her manga cafe paycheck is not enough to make them a one income household if he's serious about their relationship to the point he wants to marry her
🤡 - What’s something dumb they’re embarrassed about?
the short answer is her hair specifically the undyed roots and the cowlicks. originally her hair was all pink but then it got too expensive to keep dyeing them so now shes incorporated it into being part of the Look. her cowlicks bother her a little bc its unruly no matter how she styles her hair but choro calls them her moe point and shes like omg ur so right king
the long answer is being really really really into anime and crane games. being called an otaku is like the equivalent of being called a gross yucky nerd and being ostracized and shoved in a locker... but by all of society. so she goes to great lengths to hide her interests especially as a girl. most people think creepy weird guy when you say otaku right...!! but at the end of the day shes not doing anything wrong by being interested in what shes interested in. she goes to her silly offline meetups and does her silly little akihabara trips in stealth mode even though the whole time she's terrified she'll run into someone she knows. she goes to her shifts at the manga cafe relieved that the only person who might walk in there is choro and she knows he's too broke to show up in the first place lol. but the older she gets the less she'll care about how other people perceive her for her hobbies. the wonders of ur brain when it finishes cooking... ^_^💖

squats over here, anyway i picked up a pmd romhack (PMD Explorers of the Spirit) on a whim since i'd seen friends talking about it here and there and i was curious. and hooboy. pmd brainrot is not back in full force but I Have Thoughts about this romhack and they are all good
ful stop, i will be talking about spoilers. they are spoilers for both pmd2 and the romhack, so if you haven't experienced either I don't recommend reading through any of this. the dialogue may be a little dated but i still wholly endorse pmd2 (vanilla or sky) as something that should be experienced blind, and this romhack is a neat little treat for people who have experienced all of what pmd2 had to offer story-wise in a lot of ways.
so, spoiler warning! you have been warned! cool? cool
so anyway i knew from second 1 that the protag was darkrai. my nerd-ass has played through pmd2 way too often and is too particular about word choice to not have picked up on that immediately. i was wary, but considering "hero is darkrai" is a neat fandom theory i decided to let the game cook and see what it had to offer
and holy fucking shit i love this approach to that concept. these madlads really made a stealth sequel that is faithful to the original game, still keeps the time travel shenanigans and has them make sense narratively (!!!), and gives a lot more depth and development to a good chunk of characters. ESPECIALLY the protag, i really really like the direction the game chose to go. writing a protag that's intense but still relatable can be a challenge, but protag hits a nice balance that isn't too intense but, again, also makes sense considering the circumstances
i'm only a little over halfway through (in the nightmare section, just did the unwinnable boss fight with grovyle) but i'm hella looking forward to how it ends 👀 two darkrais technically existing at the same time but one having a support system that the other lacked is just. chef's kiss. that's gonna be some tasty conflict later, i can tell
slightly relatedly it is Once Again Giving Me some heron brainworms bc 1) i am playing as "heron" and ramsay and 2) is kicking my brain with the "haha, heron and darkrai might've had a lot of similarities and the only thing that kept them down to earth were their friends."
considering my original idea for them was to make them affiliated with darkrai, i am just... sitting here thinking... i do kind of want to draw darkrai!heron, bc i'd like to imagine that even though they'd look really similar, there are probably some minor key differences that would make confronting "them" if you were familiar with them kind of uncanny
but yeah, we love a game that plays into my love of a) time travel stories b) meaningful doppelgangers and c) arguably morally grey characters that can just as easily be seen as bad if your perspective were slightly different

Holy hell, that tower.
And it's just there. You can see it. From the opposite side of the bloody map.
Okay, okay. Write a proper post now...
Tumblr media
In Limsa we meet with several of the Alliance's leaders. The plan has been made: we are taking the war to Garlemald. A contingent of elite soldiers will use our newly acquired warding scales to invade the Empire's capital and bring aid to the tempered Garlean populace.
Tumblr media
While I trust your intentions, Nanamo, I do not in general trust a foreign government invading a nation with which they have been at war, claiming to be bringing "aid." But then, this is a video game and not real life. Perhaps it is what it says.
Tumblr media
Our other target is the colossal tower (that tower holy FUCK) that used to be the Imperial Palace. Because that thing... That thing's bad news.

In Ala Mhigo we confer with Raubahn and Aymeric, who confess that our aid mission is not popular with either of their respective populaces. We also speak with Gaius, who wishes dearly to join us but who regrettably cannot due to both being accused of Varis' murder and his position as a former legatus making him a candidate for a new leader. Maxima will instead be accompanying us.

It turns out that Lucia will be the leader of the Ilsabard Contingent! And what a crowd she will be leading; representatives from all five of the Eorzean Allaince nations (many familiar faces from my class quests among them! How delightful!) as well as several of the Eastern Alliance!
Oh it is so wonderful to see so many old friends in the spotlight again. Brings a happy tear to my eye.

Sadu and Cirina are gal pals. I don't make the rules. They make my little shipper heart happy.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, a wild Tataru appears! To provide all us Scions with hand-made winter coats to keep us warm in frigid Garlemald.
Tumblr media
...Liar. That's the battle light. Trying to trick me, are you? Lull me into a false sense of security? Well joke's on you. The "several cutscenes" warning puts me on guard like nothing else.
Tumblr media
Ah, Emet, what do you have to tell me about Garlemald? You would know it best, I'd imagine. At least, as it was before the Telophoroi got to it.
Tumblr media
Really fucking cold? Yeah, I got that. Time to freeze my tail off, I suppose.

Our first obstacle on the road to the capital? Tempered Imperials. Comprised of members of both the Ist and IIIrd legions who had been the main instigators of the civil war, the IIIrd supporting Nerva and the Ist... not. (Who exactly was the Ist supporting??) Are we ever going to meet Nerva? I assume he's not dead yet, but is he tempered is the real question...
Anyway.

Thancred's group will disable and explode the magitek in the nearby depot to create a diversion while we guide the supply convoy through.
Unfortunately this means I must play as Thancred again. Oh boy, and it's a stealth mission this time.
I am less than good at stealth.
Tumblr media
Alisaie and I are guarding the rear of the supply carriages, when the blizzard clears and we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by Imperials. It's all we can do to disable them without killing them.
I really enjoyed this fight sequence. Very nice and tense, but not as stressfully difficult as Thancred's section was. Perfectly balanced for a story scene.
Once the fight is well in hand for our side I make for the front to join the vanguard where my friends are contending with the main force of Imperials and their commander: Vergilia.
Tumblr media
Nice design. I wonder if she'll be in any way important after we cure her of her tempering?
Tumblr media
Oof. That's the first good look I get of that tower. That thing is creeeepy. Gives me the heebie-jeebies.
Tumblr media
Fuck. Look at the city.
Tumblr media
Wait, that's a road. Like, a modern road. Do the Garleans have cars!? Like. Civilian cars?!
Tumblr media
...I find it fascinating that even after living an entire life in Solus' body, Emet-Selch never came to think of himself as Solus. Even now, in reflection, he sees it as playing a role. It makes me wonder... It makes me wonder a great many things... And this is really not the place for them, but you see, I have a one-track mind. And we're in Garlemald. The empire he built and ruled.

You thought your closest friend acted strange, lately. They could never hold eye contact with you long and they always looked so pale. You asked if they were sick but they just brushed you off.
"Why are you so worried? I'm fine!"
You felt like they weren't fine. Something about them felt off. You just couldn't seem to put your finger on it. The more they claimed they were fine... the more you felt suspicious.
"You're not fine, why don't you tell me the truth?"
You wish you never pried further that day.
"Now just where are you, dear?"
A voice coos for you, an imposter strolling past your hiding spot. He held a knife, playing with the blade while looking for you. He was a skilled manipulator....
You still had no idea what happened to your friend.
"I thought you wanted to see me! You acted like my disguise was so wrong, so here I am without it!"
Hours earlier you had pushed your friend for answers. You had gotten them in the form of Mimic dropping the act and morphing. You were a hard one to fool, why keep the act?
His motives were simple. You had become someone he adored watching from a distance after you helped him run from Whisper, taking your friend's place was the easiest way to get closer to you. They were now six feet under and you only had him to turn to.
Sometimes you need to get your hands dirty to get what you want. He's gotten people killed before, it just so happens this time he did it by his own hands only. Now he had no obstacles in his way.
Except your hiding....
"So now you want to play hide and seek, huh? You're really making me work for this...."
Even then, such an issue wasn't too troublesome for him. You scream when he appears behind you, a skeletal grin on his face. He had no time for such games.
"Too bad your stealth isn't as good as your perception...."
Mimic laughs at your resistance against him. You were such a handful. Nothing he couldn't handle, however.
"Let me go!"
"Don't complain now- you did this to yourself."
"How!?"
"You said you wanted me to tell you the truth.
There's a knife pressed to your skin in a silent threat.
"Here's the truth. I'm not your friend. They're gone. Although... I could be much more than your friend...!"
"What do you mean by 'gone'."
"You did say not to lie..." He ponders playfully before snapping his gaze back on you. "Dead."
You sob softly, refusing to look at him.
"You are so hard to read. You want the truth and then cry about it...."
"Why are you doing this!?"
"Want the truth or a lie this time?"
You glare at him, trying to push him away. He snickers softly before sighing.
"Fine. I'm interested in you. Happy?"
You look at him, silently urging for more.
"That friend of yours was my only opening to get closer. We met once before but you never knew my true appearance. Remember that one person you lied for...?"
He grins when he sees you gasp in recognition.
"Bingo. Small acts of kindness can really seal your fate, huh?
"Please just leave me be..."
"Leave you be?"
Mimic scoffs, this time he's the one glaring at you.
"After getting my hands dirty for you?"
He spins the knife before pointing it in front of your face.
"Not a chance, dear."
