#i should be doing a speedpaint rn

Here's an art/info dump about this stupidly cute idea that's been rotating in my brain for three day.

(the first comic here is just how they first met. they ended up in the same alley, pestering the same cat without noticing. Then the cat left and they notice they're not alone lol)

(Second is Donnie 'talking' with Mikey for the first time. He only uses Mind Mend to communicate and is just as surprised as Mikey to find it worked on him. (it has only worked with Leo before this))

I'll put the rest under a break b/c i will be going off about this and i don't want it to take up your entire feed.

I'm jokingly calling this "Mikey's Imaginary Friends" though that might change if i continue this.

Basically it's this, the twins grew up with Draxum while Raph and Mikey grew up with Splinter. Neither set knew about the other (b/c splinter though they were dead and didn't want his two remaining kids to worry about it, and Draxum was too focused on fixing his lab to pay much attention to the twins.) So, imagine Mikey's shock when, at age 8, he's out exploring topside (having snuck out) and runs into two more mutant turtles (who also snuck out and are exploring.) Thus begins an ongoing sneaking out to meet up thing between the three b/c Mikey's excited to have new friends and the twins are just as fascinated with Mikey as he is with them.

And before you ask, "hey, why doesn't Mikey tell his family about the two other turtles?" he does. Raph thinks he just made up some imaginary friends so he plays along but doesn't believe they're real. Splinter, on the other hand, thinks he's talking to Hamato ancestors due to some very big miscommunications (that i'll probably draw out at some point b/c it's silly)

Twins background wise, i'm still thinking through a lot of it, but i'll put my thoughts down anyways.

Draxum knew that training the twins at a young age would be counterproductive, so he doesn't train them beyond some basics a few times a week. Other than those sessions, he leaves them alone with their less-than-stellar caretaker, in favor of rebuilding his lab. The caretaker doesn't do much for them beyond give them food and very basic school like lessons. Beyond that the twins are left on their own.

they come to the conclusion that the only people that will care for them is themselves. They discover Mind Meld very early as a result of this and will not talk verbally b/c they found out early on with their caretaker, that if they tried to talk, they were just ignored anyways, so what's the point.

(I'm also thinking Donnie might be deaf or hard of hearing in this, with the pair of them using Mind Meld as a way for him to temporarily hear through Leo and thus keep Drax from finding out. but i'll have to do some more research before i decide for sure/figure out the specifics)

as for Meeting Mikey

That's why they became so fascinated with mikey. B/c mikey was the first person that treated them like a person and not a job or an incomplete experiment. (He's also so happy and bright, they can't avoid getting drawn to him lol)

Mikey's probably the only one they verbally start talking to, even after they teach him mind meld. (though Leo's the one to pick up on that more than Donnie. Donnie doesn't do much talking at all outside mind meld).

They also come out of their shells (hehe) a lot as they interact more with Mikey. Before they met him, they acted more like automatons, even when alone. The more they socialize with Mikey, the sillier these two get. Leo learns about puns and starts going mad with them, Donnie starts happy stimming about thing (which he has either been suppressing or just never had the urge to do before.) Basically they stop acting like little creepy statues and start acting like kids.

Honestly, it's just a cute idea with the kiddos meeting each other and Mikey inadvertently socializing his not-well-socialized brothers.

(also, the twins wear masks b/c Donnie doesn't like the smell of the city and he's worried about germs. Not for any ninja reasons, what so ever.)

Alright, that's it for my info dump. maybe more later? Maybe not? Depends on how much longer these kids keep my attentions (though right now, they're doing a pretty good job at it lol)

silly question but: does wolf alík look any different from a regular wolf? when she's fully transformed, is there anything that sets her apart, or does she just look like an average, straight up wolf?

look at her hands and feet. human joints should not be like that, and wolf paws do not look like that. her claws.. god just look at them. blazys art explains alíks messed up wolf situation far better than i ever could. her ears, too, are just... god, look at them!! i have to move on from this art or ill just keep saying "look at it!!" but, well. Look at it.

some of my own alík wolf art:) the first one is when shes fully transformed, but also the first ever art i did of her like that, so take it with a grain of salt, but still take it. the second is her like... in her metamorphisis era - my internet connection is kinda MEAN and EVIL right now so i can't add them rn .. ill either rb with them later or edit them into the post. for now i just put links to the images :( sorry! plus the mentioned image from before. now Onto serious business

something that alík always has, no matter form, is her human eyes - but they're not really human! their colouration is one of a wolf's, and her eyesight is also almost as good as that of one. this is messed up when she's in full wolf mode, because its really.. just, weird. can you imagine looking at a dog with human eyes? a cat? a cow? no!! because its weird!!!! shes a FREAK!! (affectionate)

another weirdo thing about her face is her teeth. hes got canine teeth, no doubt about it, but i do think she has a bit more teeth than she should have.. maybe three more... ? two more? i think the amount of teeth is not equivalent with neither the amount humans should have nor the amount wolves should have.. like 38 or smth. this doesn't change in her transformation, but her jaw and gums do! it hurts! Ouchies! it also shifts her teeth around.. tbh i wouldnt be surprised if she lost a tooth or two transforming sometime.

as you may have noticed, alík has most of her fur on her head! this is because of hair! she has a big ol' tuft of fur on her head when she's in wolf mode and it makes her look silly. depending on how far along in transition they are, their fur is like... its in blotches over their body. a tuft here, a tuft there, no fur at all someplace else... her spine gets covered in fur first. bc its like !! hair to tail:)

her limbs are weird, too. her arms are more humanoid than her legs - my friend mikey @/monstertsunami shows this wonderfully in his art of alík and their gf idk who she is i heard shes some kind of loser? ermmm what the freak🔥

oh wow it let me add an image that time Awesome!!! anyway, you can see how her feet are pretty pawsome, huh?? shes got pawpads - is that what its called for wolves? i cant find info :( - and her joints are more.. like, look at how she's standing! her ankles! everybody say thank you mikey... !!! this stays in her wolf form, in a way

in the 'mentioned image' from before, you can see - ifyou can read my handwriting lol - that there's text around her feet/paws (peets...) that says 'human hands - fucked up paws'. in the linked image 'first one' , you can see her fucked up wolf hands more clearly! thats something that ive kept. i think she could grab you, even as a wolf. she keeps her thumbs. even if they dont work as well. this makes running as a wolf difficult for her, because her fingers are very much in the way !! herr back feet are more wolf-like in her wolf mode, even twisting her hips to work better !! opposite goes for her hands, though - her arms, like.. theyre not good for wolves ! her elbow is forced into a shitty position, her shoulders are.. bad...

and, as mentioned, her nose is fucked up. the smell of blood is an intimate friend of hers 💥it like.. god, her face goes through So Much. her skull gets absolutely , like ... goddd shes definetely broken bones transforming before... her nose is like, stretched out ? idk how to explain it .. its like if you used the 'free transform' tool on it

in short, id say theres a few main things that set alík apart from a regular wolf:

human eyes

human hands (sometimes covered in fur)

teeth

body isn't always fully covered in fur (its not easy for his body to bust out ten thousand fur strands all over his body, ya know? needs resources for that to happen)

movement (can't run as well, vocal cords arent probs in the best state after her neck fucking... look at it)

smell. she smells weird. oyou dont care about that but wolves would i think

then there's like, little basic anatomy stuff, like she will Never have the proper body of a wolf . maybe if she was like, for a year as a wolf, or two, or maybe even fine her body would be like Ok were wolf now . and her bones would settle ... but this is a question of years and time she does not have. her lifespan is also all kinds of fucked up. if she wasnt being experimented on evey day of her life ever, she'd probs live until her 40s? maybe late 40s if she had a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE filled with JOY and WHIMSY!!!! but i think now she'll die like, in her pafl au, i dont think she'll make it to 35.. sad! ouppy gone

where would you post the podcast? if in a video on YouTube a little slideshow of the art you drew in the background or a SpeedPaint of something your drawing could work. adding subtitles in a editing app helps greatly.

Ooo those are good ideas yea!! I was thinking about maybe adding some simple art related to the fic (I looked at a Loaht of podfic tips and guides and several mentioned cover art) either for the whole background or just to the side if I don't overwhelm myself LOL. Subtitles are definitely something I plan to add for the video, too!

Other than youtube, though, I'm debating if I should also post the audios to ao3 and/or tumblr. I know the author of GITM used the audio feature on tumblr to upload their own readings of the fic but I also know that several people will post their podfics to ao3 (but I think that's because it's usually separate people doing podfics of other's fics rather than the author reading their own fic).

So idk, we'll see!! I can for sure say they'll be on youtube, but as for anywhere else? a bit up in the air rn lol

hewwo sorry 2 bother you n if im not asking the right person but ive been thinking of drawing in that oldschool warriors art style using mspaint and JSpaint (recreation of the REALLY old paint program) and i was wondering if u had any tips on using the programs? i watch lots of old ms paint/paint speedpaints n the artists seem 2 b using tricks to bypass the limits of the program but idk how, like getting rid of sketches/underdrawings for example

ill just put what tricks i know from mspaint here, no clue if they would apply to jspaint but its worth a shot:

getting rid of sketches/underdrawings:

- select the whole drawing and cut it - set color 2 to the color of your sketch and color 1 to your lineart color

- paste the image, while its still selected go to "select" and check this box

- boom sketch should be gone (alternatively, you could also set the colors and check the box before pasting the drawing) - you can also do this to remove solid backgrounds from finished drawings so long as the background isnt a color thats already in the drawing :)

adding pixelly textures/patterns:

- draw something random or keep it blank, go to save as and go to the dropdown and click "monochrome bitmap" - play around with the bucket tool, drawing will make black lines but the bucket tool will yield neat little textures - to get color, select and copy the black and white versions, open a new canvas and paste them. you can either paintbucket the whole thing, or manually color underneath it and re-paste the lineart/texture on top

- this is another way to potentially remove sketches/under drawings, as saving this way removes all color, but the other method is much quicker and easier

custom brush sizes:

- pick any brush, any size - hold ctrl and tap the + or - key on your numpad as much as you want (sorry idk how to do this without numpad)

im sure theres other stuff im forgetting rn, if you have any more questions that might jog my memory lmk :3

Sorry to be a bother and sorry if you've been asked before but what program do you use for your art and do you have any tips for someone who's thinking of trying to learn?

It’s no bother at all, don’t worry!

I’m currently using Clip Studio Paint EX, and I sometimes use an old version of Photoshop to add some effects to my pieces, like noise, since I can’t get it to look exactly like it want it on CSP.

As for tips, I’m not great at giving them, but I can try :’) I’d say get your hands on a lot of references, and watch speedpainting videos. References are your best tool, I have folders upon folders of references. Don’t know how the muscles in the back work? Use some reference. Been redrawing a hand for the fourteenth time? Reference. The wonders of the internet make it really easy to access all kinds of things, which really helps when you find yourself unable to draw something. Don’t be ashamed to use them; I’ve seen some stuff going around saying you should use references as little as possible???? Nonsense, use them all the time. ( and I’m not saying trace, because that’s different. Tracing can help figure things out sometimes, but ultimately you’ll learn way more by using references than by tracing, and tracing brings up a ton of other issues as well, but hey, we’re not getting into that can of worms rn.)

As for speedpainting videos, they can help you see what the different steps to a drawing are, you can learn plenty of tips by watching the artist’s process and all the work that goes into a piece that you can’t get from seeing the final result.

Also, DRAW WHAT YOU WANT TO DRAW. I’m not saying you should never draw hands or horses because they’re frustrating to draw, of course you also have to draw stuff you’re bad at drawing to get better, but what’s the point of drawing if you don’t have fun?? I got really into drawing because I needed to bring my Sonic OCs to life, everything that followed was collateral, so yeah, draw what you want to draw and the rest will follow :D

oh, gosh. i dont think i could ever answer this question in a truly satisfying manner, but i’ll try my best to do it!

learning art in general has just been a road of trial and error for me! looots of trial and error. im a ‘self-taught’ artist & i’ve been drawing since i was a toddler, so i’ve accumulated certain skills just bc i’ve been doing it for so dang long

that being said, i’ll share some links in a moment! but first, some advice from me to you, anon. just.. go wild. try new things and dont set too many rules for yourself, yknow what i mean? nowadays i tend to use lots of weird textured brushes + work on only one layer (which i hear is quite bad for when youre working on commissions, but i paint for myself so i dont gotta worry about correcting things all the time), and as a person struggling w/ a pretty severe case of OCD, i find it so liberating to be Forced to not give a shit through that painting method. just have fun! allow yourself to be messy, to make mistakes, and remember that you can just paint over them later. some of your ‘mistakes’ might even end up being the things that make your drawing look more interesting/organic, in the end! the ‘happy little accidents’ mindset just makes the whole process much more enjoyable imo :]

ALSO, an important thing to me was finding the right brushes for painting. just dl a shit ton of the ones that look fun to you (or make your own if your drawing program allows it!) and make an effort to try out each and every one of them at least once!! the brushes certainly arent that important-- you could paint a masterpiece with a simple square brush-- but more often than not i find my style being subtly influenced by the brushes that i use at the moment. its a thing worth considering!

another thing i should note is that, while im mostly happy with my art nowadays, i AM still learning, and i dont think i’ll ever stop learning, so, like, check in in a couple of years for some better tips i guess asuhdfuashfusdf

i also find it very helpful to just.. look at art that inspires you/ that you find appealing Right before painting? that way all of the techniques you might pick up while staring at other peoples art will stay fresh in your mind, so you’ll be more likely to try em out. (setting a drawing that you really like as a phone/desktop bg works well too since youll inevitably stare at it quite often)

i also really like seeing other peoples process, so i tend to watch speedpaints/analyse process gifs & photosets a lot! seeing how messy and abstract most drawings are in the early stages of painting is really comforting/reassuring to me :] heres a couple for u: [link 1], [link 2], [link 3], [link 4], [link 5], [link 6], [link 7], [link 8], and finally, [link 9] and [link 10] (3, 9 and 10 are the ones that inspire me the most atm)

Hey Chips, I always wanted to ask you which art program and what kind of tools /graphic tablet you use? Do you have any tips for people like me who want to start learning doing digital art? (I currently only draw traditionally with pencils and copic markers)

I've been using wacom bamboo pen & touch since 2014. Idk what they sell these days but i think there might be similar models? For art programs, before this, i used gimp and SAI but nowadays i just use firealpaca, it's free, it has decent tools (but not as full equipped as gimp), and most importantly it's lightweight, my 10 y/o laptop can still run it 😂

I think the best art program rn, if u dont mind investing money is probably clip studio paint, it has so many useful features. If u dont want to spend money krita is a good free choice, with a lot of features too. Look up art program speedpaints to help u decide.

For beginners, you will need time to get used to digital art, but since u already have fundamental art knowledge(since u already draw with markers etc) it should help, you just need to practice drawing digitally.

Its easy to get overwhelmed by art programs, but look up art tutorials and speedpaints, by seeing how other artists use the program you will find a lot of new tips & tricks that could help you. Experiment with new brushes/tools/techniques to find out which works best for you and add them to your workflow.

Lastly, don't forget to have fun! I used to have anxiety because it took a while for me to make a digital drawing im satisfied with, but over time i learned a lot of new things that helped me get better. Don't compare urself to other digital artists, focus on ur own growth and enjoyment.

Hm, I think you know a lot more about old MCYT artists than I do, and I sorta need some of that information to help with a 2012 MCYT comic I’m working on, so I’ll bite. Who’s crowmulent? And what experience do you have with work by old MCYT artists? What did you see when you were younger?

Alrighty I'll do what I can to help! Get ready for an essay!!

(Also note for anyone reading this, idk ur stance on shipping mcyts but it was a big thing in the fandom back then so any vids you may watch or art you look at remember to keep that in mind)

Alright first question: who's crowmulent? Crowmulent (now can be found under avaridiation though their yt channel only has 8 vids and they hevent uploaded in 3 years) was previously known as aleatoraye and had two different channels: 'aleatoraye autumn ryan' and 'aleatoraye winter ryan', both renamed "moved to crowmulent !!"

They were known on youtube and deviantart back in around 2014-16 for MCYT fanart and animations/animatics, pretty much all their MCYT work is archieved on those channels though! (Just search aleatoraye on yt you should find the first two and if you look in the 'channels' section you'll find avaridiation aswell)

Next question: what experience do you have with work by old mcyt artists?

Well, there's a lot to unpavk with this one, just because I consumed a lot of content by them back then (like, even more than I did with the actual MCYTs themselves), I mean I used to try and copy taxeycabs artstyle when I was younger, and similarly with rayes, I never actually interacted with the creators much (except like, one or two times I tried to get into an multi animator project (which there were a lot of back then too) but I didn't even have the skillset to do that back then.

The only 'mcyt' artist I ever interacted with was marsarts when they still drew for it (if you know them from back then, if you saw their idgaf oc map i was actually in that one, and when they did a qna long time ago I asked the 'so you know the muffin man' question as a joke(and I was also the one who requested the seto drawing when they did that weekly drawing comment requests thing- ANYWAY)

there were a lot of AUs, though I can't really remember them, but I remember that mangokiwi wrote a danganronpa AU, and there was also the labyrinth series by saltvenian (though I never read them i know they were both on wattpad, idk if they're still up or not though) uhmm,, I can't really think of much else rn (also idk if I understood this question correctly, but I hope it works-)

And lastly: what did you see when you were younger?

Alright theres still a lot here, but I'm also kinda tired so I can't think of everything rn, all I can say is watch old animatics by raye(specifically the colord chibi style ones), mangokiwi and dopier toast, a lot of these are funny shitpost type one that charmed me into the artist side of the fandom.

One thing I remember was the mcyt + mc monsters fusions, the only ones I can remember rn are enderlox, skybrine and setoblaze, but I know there were more.

I honestly mostly watched speedpaints and antimatics and read fics, I never interacted with the fandom outside of places like youtube, DA, fanfiction.net and wattpad so I certainly don't remember everything did see either.

I can't remember the names of all the fics I read, but I do remember miles and inches, which was a huge group of just different oneshots and shit (it had like?? 300?? 400?? Chapters last time I read it?) I know if I dug around I'd be able to find a bunch more fics but I'm tired atm-

hi! would you ever consider doing a coloring tutorial? or maybe any refrences you have that taught you how to paint like you do? my drawing skills are pretty good but im absolutely abysmal at coloring and im looking to improve and learn how to paint. i just love your art, honestly! ive watched your quick draws on youtube but theyre a bit fast so i have a hard time really following them

hi! i’m very flattered that you’d look to me for advice! i actually made a coloring tutorial a while ago, but i figured i should probably remake it lmao

however, important foreword: i’m 15 and have never been to art school and taught myself what i know. so i mean. please take everything i say with a grain of salt.

different color harmonies, like the ones i listed, create very different atmospheres. complementary color schemes are very eye-catching, especially when both colors are really vibrant. you see complementary pairs a lot in sports teams or ads. i’ve found that making one color dark, and making it’s complement the light source creates very dramatic and striking lighting! (dark blue-violet and light yellow-orange is one of my favorite color schemes ever it looks so cool)

i usually come up with the general mood i’m going for before anything else. then based on that, you can decide the palette you want to go for. monochromatic and analogous schemes are more calm and pleasing to the eye, whereas triadic or complementary schemes are a lot more jarring

the other thing that informs my color choice is general knowledge of color symbolism. people usually know the basics without ever actually researching the specifics - blue is sad, yellow is happy, red is dangerous, pink is romantic, etc. taking a minute to think about what you want to express creates a big difference!

as for my personal painting process, usually it goes something like this (i saved a bunch of wips from what i’m workin on rn)

i never line this cleanly idk what possessed me. but usually i just sketch out the general figures, which you can probably see alright in my speedpaints

coloring for me is just endless trial and error and doing random shit until i’m done. i have everything on low opacity so i can just throw a bunch of random colors on top of each other on the same layer as the lines until i like the way it looks

i keep using a low opacity brush on the same layer as everything else, and kind of block out the major colors. try not to pull random colors out of nowhere - keep everything in line with the rest of the palette, unless it’s intentional contrast. for example, the cuff on the man’s suit is supposed to be very vibrant red, but instead of just choosing a red color and going for it, i looked for a closest hue in the drawing. that ended up being that orange-ish pinkish shade you can see in the background between the purple and yellow light. i made it the slightest bit more saturated, but not enough to distract from the focus of the drawing. so it’s not exactly accurate, but you’re allowed to use artistic license to make the palette work. don’t get too hung up on accuracy!

then just general color correction. i thought it looked too grey and boring, so i put a dark purple multiply layer and then some really intense orange and pink overlays because i couldn’t think of a good reason not to. that’s kinda my philosophy on drawing in general tbh

i hope that helped some!! it’s hard to put what i do into words, because it’s really mostly experimenting and judging what looks good by eye. but the major thing i have to recommend would be to just learn the very basics, then just keep trying stuff until you get the effect you want. art is eternal trial and error baby
