many of him
snake eater 1 + 2 (age 20): self explanatory. military buzzcut. parade dress. scarf. with and without beret, for funsies. iconic.
portable ops (age 26): i drew him once before in this outfit but i think he was doing three piece suits throughout the latter half of the 60s and into the early 70s. and he kept the sides of his head shaved but started growing out the top part a little. i know portable ops isn’t technically canon but i think that he definitely killed the DCI to get the other half of the legacy for zero. pomade era!
les enfants terribles project (age 28): baby’s first facial hair. in my mind this was around the time he first got into drugs because the situation was so stressful and also it was the 70s.
early 9 yr gap (30s): i don’t have a specific timeframe for this but the point of this entry and the next are to juxtapose what his hair looks like when he takes care of it and what it looks like when he just lets it grow out and get awful. in my head if he were to style his hair in any of the upcoming entries it would have those swoopy wavy 70s curls just like here.
soviet invasion of afghanistan (age 35): i think this is where he first started getting Bad. he makes a few references to the invasion in the mgsv tapes and he just sounds so sick and tired of it.
1982 (age 38): i just stuck this in for my own personal enjoyment but in my mind he let his hair get so long and ratty and nasty before finally hacking it all off with kitchen shears over the sink just before mgsv. (insert post: love this character. love to see them at the lowest point in their life)
phantom pain (age 40): i think all instances of the scarf are the same one he’s had since the 60s. he takes good care of his clothing
foxhound 199X (50s): to be honest i have NO idea what ocelot was doing in the 90s. hopefully he got clean. i think it would be funny if he stopped by foxhound every so often moonlighting as like a horseback riding instructor or something. kaz would love that i’m sure
shadow moses (61): in my mind his hair is curled so beautifully in mgs1, it just is to me
stealing ray (63): i think it would be funny if liquid made him pierce his ears. i love giving him a braid when i draw mgs2 ocelot i KNOW he doesn’t have one but in my mind he does
guns of the patriots (70): no red in his outfit tragic. also i think he straightened his hair for this game. slay?

I think about Alien a lot, especially recently. This evening I’m specifically thinking about how in the Alien Isolation novel (and maybe other Alien novels) it mentions how Ripley would send video messages to Amanda before the freighter ship would lose contact, and how one of those times a message was from Dallas.
It made me think about the crew a lot. Like, did Amanda ever ask about them? Did any of them sometimes stop by while Ripley was talking to Amanda on the video message just to check in and say hi as another parental/family friend figure? Did Ripley ever tell the crew about her daughter? Did any of the other Nostromo Crew have kids?
Would Amanda have met the other crew member’s kids at some point in her childhood or teenage years and have no clue they were related to people who her mom worked with? If she did know them, would they have become a close friend group just trying to figure out what happened to their parents? Did the others try to stay optimistic that maybe their parents were okay? Did they give up on them after a few years?
I don’t know, but I think it’s interesting to ponder.

Eddie hates his hair. It never does what his mom tries to get it to do, when she’s out of the stupor of drugs long enough to notice the state it’s in. Either way, it’s always breakin the teeth of the cheap combs his dad buys him when Eddie’d starts to complain of it getting all gross.
There are only so many times his hair can get wadded into a pile on the top of his head or have a brush torn through it again and again before he starts to shy away, to dread anyone touching his hair at all.
His dad threatens a razor. Eddie might hate his hair, but he hates the idea of his dad getting close to him with his shaving razor even more.
Things have been…ok, for a while. Eddie can feel it though. The inevitable is coming soon, and the longer the good sticks around, the harder it becomes to believe in it. What way the bad will come, Eddie can’t tell, can never really tell, but he tries his best to ready himself for it. This school in Indianapolis has been one of the better ones he’s been switching around to since they came to Indy a couple years ago from Kentucky.
Kentucky feels like a dream.
Kentucky was the best part of his life he can remember. In Kentucky, he’d had a group of friends, all kinda like him, all scrappy trailer park kids, and he’d drifted between all of their trailers. Back then, they’d come to his trailer too, before his mom had sunk down all the way, before his dad had turned out to be an angry drunk. They’d all sleep sprawled out on the floor of each other’s bedrooms, making room for the siblings when they were there. Eddie was only hungry about half the time, and he had never really been scared of much back then.
He knows better now.
They’re in Indianapolis, in a tiny apartment that Eddie tries not to think about how his dad got. There’s no way they can afford it with his real job, even though it’s a shithole. But Eddie’s twelve now. He’s not stupid. So he keeps his mouth shut around his dad and takes care of his mom when he’s not at school.
His hair sits under a hat more often than not. He tries to run his fingers through it, the comb, anything. One night he sneaks some margarine from the fridge and tries to get the knots to slip and slide out from each other. It only makes him look dirtier. A couple weeks pass and it’s not getting any better. A rainy day comes. Eddie has a purple bruise on his gaunt cheek that his mom smears the thinnest layer of foundation over, just enough to hide it and not enough for his dad to notice the makeup on his son’s face.
Annie is sitting in the library during lunch, in front of the window they always eat at. It’s a muggy day for April, but she still wears long sleeves.
Annie’s eleven, a year younger than Eddie but just as smart, probably smarter. All the kids make fun of her hair, which rests in fraying braids across her shoulders. She’d told him once, one of the first times they’d both taken refuge in the library, that her mom didn’t have the time to do her and all her sibling’s hair. As the oldest, Annie helped all the others, but it was hard for her to do her own. It just fell by the wayside. Not all the time, but enough. Eddie and her were the same, she’d said once, no matter that everyone thought they couldn’t be because she was Black and he was trailer trash.
Her dad hit her too. She always told him it was better her than her little siblings.
“Hey Annie.”
“Hey Eddie.”
Annie smiles as he sits down, goes back to her book. Eddie sits across from her on the sill, grabbing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for her out of his lunch sack. Wordlessly, he sets it to her right. Nudges her foot with his. She doesn’t pick it up for a minute, and Eddie smirks to himself as he sees her mouthing the words as she finishes her page.
They’re both left behind, but in these moments, the space between them and what they kn ow they lack is smaller.
“Hey Annie?”
Eddie can’t look her in the eye, instead picking apart his sandwich. Annie hums, taking a bite of her PB&J.
“Could you maybe…could you maybe help me? With, with my hair.”
Still not looking up from his sandwich, Eddie pulls off his hat.
“Jesus H. Christ.”
Eddie can’t help butler out a bark of laughter.
“...Yeah, I know.”
Eddie glances up at her, and she’s just looking at him. Calculating, like she gets with books that her teachers say are too old for her. Thinking of the best way to tackle it.
“Meet me in the theater dressing rooms tomorrow after dismissal.”
Tomorrow can’t come quick enough.
Eddie goes home and makes dinner for him and his mom, writes his book report, and sneaks  beside his mom in her bed to read The Two Towers after she’d been asleep for a couple hours already. He’s just finished The Fellowship of the Ring and he can’t put it down. When he gets tired he sets his book down on the nightstand his dad never uses and presses his face into his mom’s back, feeling the rise and fall of each of heI r breaths as he slowly slips into sleep and dreams of his hair long and glossy, falling around his shoulders just like his mom’s.

BRENNER WTF IS YOUR DEAL
before the circle game Brenner warns the kids "if you allow anger or emotion to invade your thoughts, you will fail. I promise." not you'll be disqualified, but you'll fail. he's addressing all the kids, but he says it extremely pointedly to El, because he's already suspicious Henry has coached her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brenner knows emotion would work, and clearly the first place his mind went when he saw Henry and El together was that Henry might have taught her to use that tactic.
Brenner must want the kids trained to use their powers in an entirely sterile and robotic and controllable way. he must have learned from Henry years ago that emotion-driven powers makes them too uncontrollable so he doesn't want the other kids to know that's even a thing. that's why he says it won't work instead of don't do it.
but El does exactly that, and it works, and Brenner absolutely saw what happened. his "it looks like we have a new winner" is definitely displeased and begrudging, and he hauls Henry off to be zapped immediately after this because he knows what he did. meanwhile El's win is not only honored but she gets her reward (time in the rainbow room).
why wouldn't Brenner also discipline El?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ps notice that camera pointed through the one way mirror - is Brenner filming Henry being tased or is it just sitting there from a prior experiment? also the sign on this door says "test room 1" lol
I know Brenner didn't technically say "don't do this," but at the heart of it, El still disobeyed him. isn't not only defying his instructions in front of the kids, but giving them all the idea that emotions do work, a REALLY bad offense, one he would want to harshly stamp out? strict discipline and fear of authority is Brenner's only real tool for keeping in line a room full of kids who could all kill him with their minds if they felt like it. why did he just let this go - in fact, reward El - instead of making an example of her?
and why does Brenner seem caught off guard by this considering it's very likely happened before, resulting in an escape??
Kali's angry-memory-training method is too similar to Henry's for her not to have been coached. Kali might not be as empathetic as El but I could see at least a couple reasons Henry might bond with her in particular (having similar powers, and both having been kidnapped as kids, depending how much their memories have been tampered with)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but anyway, it makes no sense for Henry to be an orderly if Brenner's motives are what they seem.
if the risk of Henry influencing the kids is so great, why on earth allow him access? why not keep him isolated? what does Brenner gain from Henry's proximity to the kids, or theirs to him, if he's not supposed to teach them anything?
why does Henry go along with the orderly lie for like 15+ years? either the few next-oldest kids never knew him as One, or they did but had their memories tampered with. they would've been of useful ages a decade before the massacre, couldn't he have manipulated one of them into removing soteria?
is he forbidden to have solo interactions with the kids like he did with El at the plinko board? Brenner looks immediately concerned when he sees them sitting side by side. is that the first time Brenner's ever seen that happen? (seems not, given his accurate suspicions)
if Henry's not supposed to interact with the kids, why is he not actually prevented from doing so? he gets zapped for it and then goes right back and does it again! he plays one-on-one chess with El and has a whole ass secret conversation and passes her something under the table! He gives El a specific warning at the start of it to act normal, but she acts very suspicious, and not only does El LOOK RIGHT AT THE CAMERA but so does Henry! does he think it's being monitored or not?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is either a series of bafflingly careless and inconsistent moves on Brenner's part, or this is being permitted. but he really does look pissed about the circle game, and I can't figure out what he stands to gain from letting Henry influence the kids (but while pretending that isn't what he wants). surely an escape and/or death of his test subjects is not a desirable outcome, nor is Henry turning the kids against him (that's the #1 thing I'd be paranoid of, in Brenner's position).
I'm basically certain that some of NINA is a fabrication and/or a misleadingly incomplete cherrypicking of memories. I just can't decide exactly how far it goes or who's fooling who in which parts

So the phone rang and John said, “You know, I want to do a record but I don’t know if I want to do a record. I have some material, I’ve been writing for a while, writing down here in Bermuda” and of course he had a near-death experience sailing in a storm down there, which I think changed his perspective completely. Because almost all of those songs were written in Bermuda.
So it was like one creative burst. Was this 1979?
Yeah, ’79. And so I agreed that I would listen to the stuff. And he said, “Yoko has it” and she handed me an envelope that said, “For Jack’s ears only.” And I took it home and he called me at home the next day and asked, “What do you think?” And my honest opinion was that they were very primitive, a whole bunch of cassettes, there was narration in it, he talked me through it. The songs all began with an explanation, a lot of it funny, and all of them ended with, “What a piece of crap. I’m going to give it to Ringo for his solo album.”
Were these all songs that ended up being on the album?
No, there were still a few more. And there was so much on that tape that I didn’t put on the album. But the Beatles had completed "Real Love" many years later, from that cassette. They built off of that cassette. Actually, I had the original so they built that off of a copy that maybe Yoko had.
Were there any songs from that tape that immediately hit you?
Oh yes, there were so many. So many. There was so much material on that tape. Two cassettes.
Do you still have that tape?
Yes.
Did you ever digitize it?
Yes. But they’ll never be—it’s property of Yoko. Period. It’s her property. So anyway, most of it’s been released.
On the box sets [John Lennon Anthology and John Lennon Signature Box]. Yes, most of those demos have been released... Maybe not with his dialogue, which is quite funny, but he’s singing into a tape machine like a beat box, like a Panasonic from back in the day. He’s singing into it, playing guitar, and then playing that into another, just from the speakers and then singing along with it, like playing percussion or doubling his vocals. It was so primitive. Banging on pots and pans. Very primitive. And my first reaction was, “I don’t think I can beat it, to tell you the truth. It’s so good.” And he’s like, “Oh, no, no, no, that’s not—“ and I said, “John, put this out. It will be sensational. Just put this cassette out. I’m putting myself out of the greatest job I’ve ever had in my life, but I’m just telling you.”
—Jack Douglas, producer of Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey albums, on how he was first recruited by John Lennon [x]

The Ridley Scott alien prequels are really funny to me because they're trying to be these deep, pretentious sci-fi films about the origins of humanity and the act of creation
but then they have some of the dumbest characters ever written in a sci-fi movie and it leads to a lot of unintentional comedy
