A lot of drama's love triangles are:
Main lead: someone who can't live without you.
Second lead: someone who will burn the world just for you.
First lead's are almost always a "soulmate/fated" ideology, where they won't ever be whole unless with the FL. It's like they're together because they just don't have a reason not to be. But very often I much prefer the ideology of the second male lead, someone who chose you. Who grew to love you and your imperfections, and through that would be willing to fight for you. Instead of "you're the only one (who understands me/who can fix me)" it's a "there are many great people, but I want you".
Just you.

The Glory: my thoughts so far
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Broke: I love you.
Woke: I will k1ll for you.
So I'm watching this show called "The Glory" it's about a girl named Moon Dong Eun who's plotting to get revenge on her high school classmates and teacher who bullied her, and by bullying I mean (extremely violent mental and physical abuse, which left her body disfigured, and her life ruined)
And I gotta say, THE REVENGE PLOT IN THIS SHOW IS REALLY SATISFYING SO FAR
There's already so much media that vilifies bully victims, so SEEING A BULLY VICTIM AS THE MAIN CHARACTER THAT WE ARE ROOTING FOR IS SO REFRESHING.
I haven't watched that many kdramas but this is also the reason why I appreciated Gangnam Beauty, bc just like The Glory, both the female leads are
not vilified by the narrative for their unconventional choices, (Kang Mi-rae for her plastic surgery and now Moon Dong Eun for her revenge). In The Glory, the the trauma Dong Eun had to endure while being abused by her classmates and teacher was portrayed in a very sympathetic light, and the story instead pins the blame on the people and the circumstances that led her to make those choices. Not to mention her bullies live good lives but continue to be terrible people with NO REMORSE for their actions even in adulthood, so while Dong Eun's revenge is still morally questionable, it is also VERY understandable.
Another thing I LOVE is how realistic Dong Eun's revenge plot is executed. The show and the Dong Eun herself is aware of the disadvantages she has (with the laws and all) and so she carefully executes her revenge in the way that she doesn't have to get her hands dirty. WHICH MAKES THE REVENGE TO THESE TERRIBLE PEOPLE ALL THE MORE SATISFYING! Remember that teacher who abused her? Yeah, She orchestrated his son to kill him, by simply confessing what the teacher did to her (bc she knows how much their family values reputation) HONESTLY QUEEN, LOVE THAT FOR HER! (also the irony that she also became a teacher like him except better, and is actually kind to her students)
And this show isn't exactly the usual "ReVENGe is BAd!! DOn't throw away your life for reVEnge!!" In fact, most of Dong Eun's allies actually support her because they understand just how evil her former highschool bullies are that they needed to be punished.
Which leads to the scene with Dong Eun and her love interest Ju Yeo-jeong. When she first confessed how she was planning revenge against her bullies, Yeo-jeong thought it was just some light bullying, until she undressed and showed the disfigured scars littered across her body. Yeo-jeong being a doctor, saw her scars and understood how much she suffered that he wept. He went from telling her not to pursue revenge to declared that he is willing to be her accomplish hence this scene.

MURDEROUS VENGEFUL COUPLE, Love that for them. They probably won't come out of this unscathed, but I really want them to WIN and get a happy ending, idk if that's too much to ask for. 😩😩😩😩

Cheon Sarang
I haven't seen a lot of praise or discussion on Sarang as a character (an unfortunate result of kdrama lovers being majorly engrossed in male protagonists when they're attractive, pathetically in love, and rich, which i'm not diminishing it's just that people sometimes forget to talk about the female lead in these circumstances)
People can argue that Sarang maybe a boring female lead but i think her portrayal of a working class woman is a very realistic one. She does have that bit of pretty privilege if we can be honest but that doesn't really give her much of an advantage in the world of King The Land. Her climb towards her goal to work in King The Land was something she worked hard for.
We see her have this goal of working for King Hotel and King The Land specifically from the get go. She took her chance to go for the interview even if she knows she lacks the years of education compared to others who were trying out for the position as well.
What makes her so captivating to me is that as nice as we see her interact with her colleagues, she's never a push over and she stands her ground and has very tight morals.
As we saw in Ep. 2 even though Guwon in the end helped her with "Korea's Mother" Mo Seong-Ae, Sarang still had herself composed and ready to do anything and not back down from someone trying to bribe her way to get free upgrades. We also saw this when the grandma and the boat owner were trying to scam them for staying the night in their so-called best hotel in Gapado.
I also love the idea that even though Guwon is generally a kind person himself but is probably just ignorant to the issues of the working class, it's Sarang that brings out the best in him to help the employees more seeing as he can have the power to do so. Sarang never got something just because Guwon wanted her to have it, Sarang already acheived her goals with hard work and Guwon is just recognizing that and recognizing that she and her friends actually deserve trips and incentives given to them.
Everybody says they wish they had a Guwon to love them, which let's be honest i also want that, but i also want to have a Sarang who is kind, understanding, never is one to judge others, truly listens to people's worries and empathizes with them, is strong willed and knows her worth and when she loves, she truly loves and not just in a romantic way but also with her grandma and friends.

Not here to fight or put anyone down but I do feel like I need to get this off my chest. I’m frustrated as I type but just know I mean no harm to others and appreciate kind responses even if disagreeing. It’s just… it’s too much.
Of course I know negative opinions of the show exist and everyone has the right to their own opinion, I try my best to accept that all views are valid views, but some of them have actually been hurtful to me. There are a bunch of articles written about this drama, especially because there’s an autistic female lead, a bunch of threads on twitter, people in real life talking about the show, and somehow this small space on tumblr I joined just some days ago is the safest I ever feel as someone on the spectrum while watching it every week.
Someone told me directly that Extraordinary Attorney Woo is actually harmful to the autistic community, in response to me being happy about it and enjoying it every week. Granted this person was non-autistic and went off takes by another people calling Youngwoo exaggerated, stereotypical and non-realistic, saying she casts unrealistic expectations for autistic people for neurotypicals — and, honestly, I just started crying.
I’ve had people tell me not to watch the show because the first episode made them “uncomfortable with the stereotypes”, I’ve had people tell me Youngwoo having difficulty with the revolving door is the most cringe thing ever (“What? Do they think autistic people are dumb?”), I’ve had people say her mannerisms are unrealistic. And you know what, I can still handle all of those, but being told that a drama where I finally feel seen and look forward to watching every week is actually harmful for the community I’m in? Made me feel so fucking shitty. I feel defeated, actually. I feel ashamed for enjoying this show when everything other than this small space is telling me I’m not allowed to. I feel ashamed that I relate to a character that’s apparently exaggerated and harmful. I feel ashamed of my autistic traits. I feel ashamed of my autism. I’m tired of explaining I disagree and want to watch the show. I’m tired of being overlooked because everyone’s only looking at negative opinions over the influx of positives from us. I’m tired that since this drama came out, I have had to explain and explain, instead of them just accepting that I like this and feel seen.
“This is too exaggerated” while my best friend who behaves exactly like Youngwoo watches the show with me every week. While many people in both online and offline spaces say Youngwoo is who they are without masking.
“There’s no masking so it’s not realistic” for you, maybe. Not everyone masks. Not everyone has to mask. Not everyone can mask. Masking makes us exhausted, it can hurt us, it can be a response of social abuse trauma so it can vary for each person. Youngwoo is simply another autistic person who does not mask, as exists in real life, and is valid in living that way.
“She’s stereotypical, it’s bad” but there are autistic people who still match the stereotypes. I match some, my friends on the spectrum match others. We see ourselves in Youngwoo. Past media didn’t do the best job at autistic representation, but why are we not valid because of them? Why are we now harmful?
“She can’t get through a revolving door, this is so exaggerated I’m cringing, no one acts like this” It took me weeks to use an escalator because of the motion when looking at it (even now I still hesitate), a revolving door is no different, am I now too cringe to be autistic? You can say you find some scenes cringey and you won’t be watching anymore. It’s not hard to be accommodating to the people who do struggle instead of making them feel like they don’t belong.
Why are we as real people being valued and assessed for… reviews on a kdrama? Just because there’s a character with the autistic label? The show isn’t even about her autism, it’s about her as a lawyer and her life with her friends, family and job?
I don’t understand why I am meant to feel this way. I don’t understand why, for anyone claiming to care so much about the community, that they don’t want to listen to everyone in it. I don’t understand why it can’t just be accepted this is an ordinary kdrama that happens to have an autistic character and move on, instead of them being probed under a microscope even when there are good and heartfelt responses to the character. Why must I explain and explain and explain. Why can’t this show just be for me instead of educating everyone else who don’t bother to talk to autistic people or learn about autism in real life, as all of us have done before.
I’ve watched the movies and shows with autistic characters everyone insists you should watch before seeking diagnosis because “are you sure you’re autistic when you don’t act like that?”. I knew I was autistic from talking to other autistic people, from researching about autism, from asking the questions I needed. I didn’t feel seen in those shows and I don’t put down people who do. But this, when I finally have something where I can associate and see my autism with explicit love, to be exposed to all of this is just… overwhelming, honestly.
It just sucks.

Dr Cha - who’s watching?
I have been enjoying the Kdrama, Dr Cha, starring Uhm Jung-Hwa as a woman, Cha Jeong Suk, in her late 40s who, after a health scare, returns to her residency to become a fully certified doctor in South Korea.
As a (much) older viewer, who has also had to reinvent myself more than once from wife/mother into various professional roles, I find the plot line (while obviously over-the-top for comic effect) pretty realistic. I have to wonder when I read reactions that say she should “just”
divorce her no-good husband
start an affair with the second lead
‘throw hands’ at another woman
make any move that doesn’t fit with her personality, upbringing, or culture
Who is watching this show?
Clearly the people I am seeing reactions from are young. They don’t understand how much a woman can become identified with her roles as a wife and a mother. Some of that is personal - some of us lean into that role more than others. Some of it is cultural - why do you think so many of the women in Cha Jeog Suk’s life counsel her to stay in her marriage at first? Because they know how little an unmarried, divorced woman is valued in society. At least her unmarried friend, Baek Mi Hee, has money and therefore status. She is also lonely and wants what Jeong Suk has, even if it isn’t perfect.
In a divorce, Cha Jeong Suk is not guaranteed “95%” of the family finances, as I saw one reviewer proclaim. I don’t know what the divorce laws are like for family or community property in Korea, but I can guarantee you Dr Cha will be worse off financially if she divorces. Even in North America, most women lose financially. Yes, I’m sure you know of someone who “had to give everything to his bitch of a wife in a divorce.” Statistically, that is unusual, no matter what Men’s Rights Groups want you to believe.
Seo In Ho, the husband, has all the power in the family - he inherited money, his mother controls the money, he makes more money. Until after her surgery, Dr Cha had never used his credit card. What does that tell you? Once she goes back to work as a resident she would make some money, yes. I can guarantee it would not be enough to retain the house her husband would still own, or live the life she had been living. If it were, she wouldn’t have moved in the hospital residence.
Divorce is a difficult, complicated issue. It represents a complete failure of her whole adult life. She was young - early 20s - when she had Jung Min and got married. She stayed in medical school in spite of having a baby until Jung Min and her mother were in a car accident - perhaps when he was about 7? Then she had another child the same year her husband was in a program in the US, met his 1st love, had an affair, got her pregnant and came back to Korea. Irang and Eun Seo were born the same year - they are now 16 or 17. She stayed home for 20 years making a home and bringing up her children to be good people, which, in spite of some childish behaviour on the part of the literal children, they have become.
So asking for and planning for a divorce should take some time, don’t you think? It means rejecting her whole life - admitting that EVERYTHING she has worked for was a lie.
Having an affair with Dr. Roy Kim? He is a good person (which is why he is careful about how he deals with her) and she is a little overwhelmed with shit right now. He saved her life (and is very good-looking, and pays attention to her when her husband doesn’t) - she must wonder if any feelings she has are real. She constantly rejects Mi Hee’s hints that he is into her. She ‘builds rapport’ by being there for him when his personal journey goes badly - and she must feel so grateful to be able to repay him a tiny bit for everything he has done for her - but she doesn’t have the space or the time to work out how she’s feeling about him, and anything she decides now could be a disaster down the road. And I’m not sure she is that interested in sex at the moment either - she’s been 10 years without, and she probably thinks she’s over that stage of her life. (It happens. Our sex drive fluctuates through life. A lot.)
Getting into a physical altercation with another woman? Does that seem like Jeong Suk? She is angry throughout most of this show (14 of 16 episodes down), and so far has only thrown a coffee pot and a bracelet. Besides, whether she wants to or not, she feels for Choi Seung Hi, the other woman in this story. She thought her husband was worth giving things up for too, for a long time. She rightly puts most of the blame on him, although she would still like Dr Choi to leave the hospital!
Finally, it amazes me that people watch shows deeply rooted in a different culture, with different philosophical roots and ways of seeing the world, and demand that the plot conform to their own narrow understanding. North American/white Protestant values are not the norm worldwide. Watching Korean dramas (and I am quite new to this) shows how often Confucian or Buddhist thinking underpins everything, even when the characters themselves are neither. The cultures are steeped in a way of seeing, a way of moving through the world. It’s important to step back and try to see that. Isn’t learning more about the way other people experience life the point of all fiction?
TL/DR - I just had to say all of this. I may have written some of this plot differently, but I am not mad about how it is unfolding. So far, it holds together for me. If Dr Cha decides not to go through with the divorce, for example, I will feel sad for her, but not angry at the writers. I know lots of women who would make the same choice. And choosing to be alone if she does divorce Seo In Ho also would make sense to me. As my grandmother said when she was widowed, “Why would I want to wash someone else’s socks again?” Being alone is not punishment. It can be freedom.

My final take on Queen of Tears? It was a one hell of a fucking journey + Thoughts on the finale
[Warning: Long-ass post ahead]
Queen of Tears released its final episode last Sunday, April 28. The show made history as it became tvN’s most watched drama, surpassing the 2019 hit Crash Landing on You. Park Ji-eun was the writer for both shows.
The story is about a couple who underwent a crisis in their third year of marriage. However, a significant event will not only change their lives but also pave the way for them to rediscover their love for each other.
I personally got hooked into this show for three reasons:
First, the plot: Marriage tropes in a lot of dramas are usually about infidelity, toxic and abusive relationships that end in a nasty divorce. It happens in real life sadly, but I appreciate the fact that Park Ji-eun took a different route and gave us another realistic side of marriage. A couple who once had this warm, passionate love for each other became cold and distant over time because of one tragic event that left them wounded and broken. There were also other factors that added salt to the wound which caused them to drift further from one another. I’m not gonna go into details because I have already discussed this in earlier episodes. However, I love that there were a couple of flashbacks that tells the viewers of how their love story began, plus some extra bits and pieces in the epilogue that were either related to Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s past, or a particular scene in the current episode that was told from either of the character’s point of view.
Switching from light and funny scenes to a more intense one then back to swoon-worthy moments and then the last thing you knew you were bawling your eyes out because of the heartbreaking scenes felt like a roller coaster ride, needless to say I was always on edge and I sometimes had to pause in the middle of the episode so I could breathe. That’s how intense the emotions were in this show. Like I have said before, this is not a rom-com but more like a heavy drama with a couple of light and funny scenes.
But the part in this story that appealed to me the most is that it will make you question, how much love can someone truly give? How far can you go to be with the person you love? And when everything seems black and white, would you be willing to stay? Or walk away?
Second, the characters: Immediately, I was drawn to Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in. Usually in KDramas, it’s always the male lead who is cool, cold, nonchalant and rich af and the girl is the bubbly, cutesy-cutesy, overly dramatic, and broke. I absolutely LOVE the role reversal. Hae-in is the cool and badass wife while Hyun-woo is the cute, dramatic hubby and together, they make an ✨iconic couple✨. But on a more serious note, a lot of characters nowadays are into the red light/green light spectrum and don’t get me wrong, I love it. Who doesn’t love a green light character right? But again, Park Ji-eun wrote them in such a way that you wouldn’t perceive them as this ultra-perfect, no flaw character, but they aren’t toxic either (except for the main villains of course). A lot of the characters in the show have a good and flawed side, and I love it because that’s what makes them human, they are multi-layered which makes them complex, but at the same time, they were written in such a way that the viewers could have a deeper understanding of the characters, and even relate to them in some ways.
Again with the exception of the villains, the character developments were so good. Witnessing this whole-ass process of them being flawed and broken characters to becoming the best versions of themselves were just the best.
Third, the cast: Ah, I can go on and on about how every actor in this show was absolutely amazing! Again, Kim Soo-hyun has proven why he is Korea’s highest paid actor. I love that he can switch from this handsome, smart, and sexy lawyer, to a super cute, loving hubby, and then a man who would fight for his woman no matter what it takes. BITCH! The acting range of this guy is fucking LIMITLESS! As for Kim Ji-won, this is by far her best acting performance in my opinion. Hong Hae-in was such a difficult character to portray, but I love how she was able to effortlessly deliver Hae-in’s stoic, nonchalant exterior and when you look into her eyes you’ll see that vulnerable part of her that no one else except [her husband] sees.
SooWon’s chemistry on the other hand is GOD-TIER! They were born to play Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in. Whether it’s a funny, romantic, or heavy scene, they nailed it to perfection! These two are the most married couple I have seen in a show. I feel sad that I’m not gonna see them together on-screen for sometime but I am hoping that they’d be able to work together again in the future. Although my delulu self is manifesting for them to be together irl 😂🤧
Park Sung-hoon, I have said before that he is so good at playing a villain. But I hope he gets to show his ability to portray a nice guy in the future, I need a break from him playing evil.
Kwak Dong-yeon and Lee Joo-bin’s performances as the second couple deserve to be applauded as well. Despite their characters going through crazy shit, I love that they were able to deliver it on a lighter, heartwarming note in contrast to SoWoon’s heavier scenes.
Special mentions to the following 🗣️:
The Official Playlist of the Show- When I tell you that I have listened to every song in this playlist, I really mean it. I don’t understand the language, but everytime I hear a song from QOT, I can instantly imagine a particular scene from the show, that’s how magical it is. My most replayed song is The Reasons of my Smiles by BSS, but I also love Heize’s Hold me back, and the song that makes me the most emotional: Love you with all my heart by Crush.
The cinematography: I’m not gonna go into details about the technicalities, but everything was perfectly shot, especially the scenes in Germany–it was dreamy, romantic, and beautiful.
The crew members who worked behind the camera also need to be praised for the hard work, effort, and dedication they’ve put into making this show.
There are things however about the show that I didn’t personally like or I think they could have done better. Here’s the link of why I think the storyline isn’t as good as I thought it would be:
The final episode didn’t turn out the way I hoped it would be, although there were some parts of it that were really good like:
📍 Cheon Da-hye and Grace choosing to take accountability for their past actions (also Grace being the key player in bringing Mo Seul-hee down was the cherry on top) and has been given another chance to live honestly was one of the best character redemptions.
📍The Hong family reclaiming what’s rightfully theirs, that was such a powerful scene.
📍Hyun-woo and Hae-in looking at each other after Mo Seul-hee was proven guilty for killing Hong Man-dae and all the other bullshits she did to Queens and the Hong family, as if saying, “It’s finally over,” and they did it together was so power couple coded.
📍Aunt Beom-ja and husband #4 [really] taking their time to get to know each other…like literally. Her facial expression when Yeong-seong kissed her on the cheek instead of the lips like she was expecting was GOLD.
📍Mama and Papa Hong choosing a simpler and quieter life and hanging out with their besties (Mama and Papa Baek).
📍The family portrait of the Hong and Baek family 🥹
📍Hyun-woo and Hae-in taking their time to rebuild their relationship, then goes on to get married and have a baby, then visiting Germany every so often was the most heartwarming scene.
📍I would say that the ending was a bittersweet one. Hae-in’s premonition came true, she died first and Hyun-woo never failed to visit her grave, and then eventually reuniting was one of the most realistic endings in a Kdrama. They lived a good life, they built a family, grew old together and reunited in the afterlife was beautiful but there was a certain ache in that part, perhaps a reminder that no matter how painful it gets, there is always a silver lining, and if you’re meant to be, you’re meant to be.
However, in addition to my linked post:
📍The first half of the story started really strong, but it dwindled the moment they added all of these ridiculous subplots. One Tumblr user commented that Hyun-woo and Hae-in’s marriage had enough issues as far as drama is concerned and I couldn’t agree more.
📍I get that Mo Seul-hee is a shitty person but I don’t even know why she chose to prey on Hong Man-dae of all people. She could have done the same to other wealthy families (I mean he’s not the only gullible man out there with tons of money), but the question is, what did the Hong family do to her? Surely, there must have been a deeper meaning than just wanting money but alas, it's a question we'll probably never get an answer too.
📍The good thing is that we now fully understand why Yoon Eun-seong acted the way he did. He has mommy issues, abandonment issues, anger issues, etc. My prediction about him dying in the finale was correct, but there was no character redemption for him thus I don’t see the point on why they had to extend his Hae-in obsession arc towards the end. Take out all the irrelevant subplots, and the story still would have worked.
📍One of my biggest frustrations in the show was the fact that they only addressed BaekHong’s miscarriage after Hae-in lost her memories when they could have done that in the earlier episode (the scene where Hyun-woo and Hae-in had a heart-to-heart conversation about their failed marriage), it’s like the writer forgot about that part–which by the way was such a crucial part then she just inserted this scene somewhere in the finale.
📍I was also disappointed that Hae-in's mom wasn't the one who comforted her during that scene where Hyun-woo was undergoing surgery after getting shot. It would have been such a perfect opportunity to heal their relationship. Also, I would have appreciated it if Mama Hong was the one who personally apologized to Hyun-woo for being harsh towards him.
📍I know I said that the ending was a more realistic one, but babes we were ROBBED! I would have loved to see a BaekHong wedding part 2, their pregnancy journey and moments with baby Soo-bin but alas, we were deprived of that too. As much as I find the finale realistic, I wouldn’t say that I was satisfied either.
📍I just remembered this now, but Papa Hong's and Aunt Beom-ja's other sibling could have actually contributed to ending the villain arc. He could have made moves to unravel Seul-hee and Eun-seong's crap, but idk writer-nim just placed him there just because 🤷.
Overall, do I think that this show is over hyped? Storywise, yes. As far as the actors’ performances go, they deserve it.
Is the show worth watching? I’d say it’s worth checking out if you’re someone who likes heavy, intense dramas. If not, avoid this. Again, this is not a light rom-com.
Would I rewatch? For BaekHong, yes but I’ll skip the irrelevant parts.
Ratings:
Performance: 100/10
OST: 10/10
Cinematography, Editing, etc.: 10/10
Story-telling: 6/10

My Mister is my favourite kdrama and when I heard that the same writer had written My Liberation Notes, I was SO EXCITED. Both of these shows are my favourite at this point.
Both these shows are similar in the themes they discuss but they differ slightly in one way, in my opinion.
My mister explores themes of loneliness, isolation and interpersonal relationships while also STICKING TO A PLOT. It says, here, I want you to care about these characters and their lives and their pain as a result of their narrative and the things that have happened to them so far.
You root for Ji-an because she endures. You root for Dong-hoon because he endures. Everyone in My Mister has gone through things that they can point to, and say, here it is. The thing that is causing my misery. Here are these characters stuck in their respective repetitive loops of pain and unending suffering. The characters in My Mister have character traits that make them interesting.
My Mister as a show, tries to be interesting. And succeeds. The plot and the characters and the writing compliments each other and we get a great show. We follow a narrative while also starting to empathise with the characters.
My Liberation Notes, on the other hand, doesn't give a fuck about being interesting. It's not here to serve plot, it's here to serve character. While not having the most interesting or intricate narrative, mln has so much character. It does not try to or pretend to be interesting in order to attract viewership. It's going to say what it needs to say without wearing an armor of plot.
In mln, the things that cause misery cannot be pointed to. They cannot be spoken of casually. With few words. They cannot be compounded into a few sentences.
How is Mr.Gu supposed to sum up the extent of his pain? Why he's in a house, so far from Seoul? How is Mijeong supposed to say why she doesn't want to join a club? How should she talk about how everything and everyone feels like work? How should Gijeong sum up why she's willing to love anyone at all before winter? How can Chanhee tell you why he's desperate for a car?How can they tell you all these things in a sentence?
I love how mln doesn't shy away from depicting monotony AS IT IS. Nothing about mln is embellished or improved or dressed up. It's why when Mijeong says to Mr Gu, "WORSHIP ME", it hits. You understand her. It makes sense.
Mijeong or her siblings or her parents or Mr Gu do not have inherently interesting "main character traits ".
They are all human in the most human way and they are trying to live and this is what makes them interesting.
I find so much comfort in mln because its realistic. Sometimes, there is no plot to hold up our lives. Sometimes, we can not go outside and point at the thing we want to be liberated from. Sometimes, you're quiet at the dinner table. There are no plot twists that can be used to make us interesting.

I continue with this segment that I started weeks ago; enemies then lovers. The cliché resource that has been used to give a lot of power to romances and that if you know how to use it; It gives you a spectacular romance within the material you are handling (films, writings, series)
Taking Din and Bo Katan's parallels with iconic couples within this dynamic, there is one in particular that I think has a lot of similarities. I'm not a fan of kdramas, but there is some very good Korean visual material.
If you have the opportunity to see this kdrama that is so good, so realistic and so sad at the same time, I promise you that you will love it but hey, try not to get attached to the characters. "Mr. Sunshine" can be found on Netflix. It touches on topics about Korea in its most difficult moment, when they were a country at war, occupied by Japan, suffering the inclemencies of these conflicts and how they had to survive and seek the independence of their country.
The main couple behave like the typical "enemies then lovers" Eugene and Ae Shine, being an exile from his country, mistreated by everyone and taking refuge in the United States, growing up in an unknown country, being adopted by a priest and being part of the army American to earn a place and be able to avenge his parents murdered in Korea because of a wealthy family.
Ae shin is a girl from a wealthy family, forced to behave like a society lady, who is outraged with the situation in her country, with what her people are living. He secretly joins rebellion groups, against the invaders and in search of independence. This is where the parallel between Din and Bo begins.
Eugene is a hurt man, alone, destroyed by the world, he believes that his life only has meaning for revenge, until this conflict makes him return to his land, where he meets Ae Shin and the causes of his people, the search for freedom, to recover his country, that is when he marries these ideas and when he understands Ae Shin's way of acting, when he begins to look for her, take care of her, hide her and give her support, until he falls in love with her and gives his life for Ae Shin if necessary (spoiler…if it happens) He understands that his purpose in life is greater than just hating.
We have a cold and methodical Din Djarin, a lonely man locked in his own rules, who when he understands that life is not just about "surviving"… that green boy arrives to change his destiny and begins to understand that loneliness It is not her path, then more allies come, then friends, then a woman comes to offer a greater purpose, take back your planet, give a new life to your people, find a decent way to live, that is when it becomes your center , He admires her. . he protects her, takes care of her and somehow marries Bo Katan's ideas to fulfill that purpose.
Tumblr media
Then mutual feelings begin to play out and the bonds already created are strengthened. Love comes out and despite being in a war; They let themselves be carried away by it. The problem is that in this kdrama, everyone is destined to sacrifice themselves and the ending is very sad.
At least in Star Wars there is minimal hope for everyone.
Ae shin is a tough girl, she knows what she wants and she is a woman of action. But her heart begins to fall into Eugene's hands, so she begins to feel the need to have him close, as more than an ally, and she dreams of him, living a normal life.
Bo katan is a born warrior; a woman wounded by the war, with frustrations, lost in her own path to help her people, desperate and with all those burdens and regrets. But when she meets that man in the silver beskar and his green child, she begins to feel at home, she begins to know that part of herself that she didn't know. She begins to protect them, she begins to walk a different path that takes her to better places, she is part of a new clan and understands that perhaps this path is the right one. Despite war and conflict, she feels supported.
Tumblr media
This is when I actually say; the one that uses "conflict or wars" as a way to separate the characters; it's ridiculous. In this life, every day is a problem and a war even against yourself. We live in constant conflict all the time and what people need most now is a home, it is a refuge, it is prudence; What we need most is love. And not as a false flag of cheap romanticism; if not as a way to love freely without having to fall into clichés, just as these characters need it. This is the way…

Who have done binge watching this drama in the last three days? Me
Tell Me That You Love Me is a very wonderful drama. Beautiful script with relatable plot. It isn't the kind of romance drama which have serial killer in the climax, or something like that. Or about a commoner getting involved with super rich family. There is no cartoonish villain who loves to ruin everyone's live without reason. The problems that were presented in the drama is very realistic to the point it hurts to watch. It is about disabilities, the problem of communicating and connecting with fellow human beings and love.
I can't explain enough of how I love Jin Woo. Just from a glance, it is clear that he is a man who has been going through a lot. There is persistent sadness inside his eyes, and yet he hasn't shed a single tear yet in the drama. Just from his body language and his limited expression, you can see how guarded he is, how he distanced himself from the people around him. How he is always walking on eggshell most of the time. He is clearly scarred, wounded but he is still living. He looks like he is numb with live, living just because he has no reason to die. Very relatable.
Then Mo Eun came, like a falling angel. She isn't a happy person herself, and yet she has so much love to give. She is so heartwarming and soft, that she is able to melt the wall that Jin Woo has built around himself. She is tender, patient and understanding, and yet fragile.
They fit each other a lot and I love how soft and warm their love growing. They learn how to communicate, how to involve each other into their lives. They are comfortable around other, not that kind of love where people drive you crazy.
So yeah, it is a very beautiful kdrama.
So my point is... I will be extremely super upset... if it ends up with bad end.
Or maybe that cheap ending where they break up, then they become successful people then they meet again.
Please no. Please give the ending that they deserve. Please. Script writer-nim.

Tell me your story about TK? For me, Taehyung’s photo found me on IG in early January (of this year) and I went down the BTS rabbit hole and then on a quest to understand their relationship. While those two hold a special place, I love BTS’ music and all the members’ interactions.
Hello blue703!!
So I'm a little older, I've been into kpop and kdrama since the second generation (early 2000s). Life happens, and I fell out of everything. Didn't know who's who's in kpop, haven't watched kdramas for years. About last year I have two friends and colleagues, they're younger, talking about kpop but specifically BTS. I was like, been there, done that I don't think I can get into that again. They talked, and I listened. One even went to their Vegas concert. Around February or March of this year, I was on YouTube, and one of their Run BTS episodes popped up on my feed. Next thing you know, I'm spiraling down the BTS rabbit hole, hahaha.
For me, I noticed Taekook after the whole Paris walk event. Not gonna lie Taehyung and JK had already been my biases at that point. I noticed how weird the video was right. As timing would have it, I started seeing these taekook analysts' videos on my YT feed, starting watching those. I also rewatched their unedited/analysts clips, and I noticed a special bond between them. As time goes by they keep giving us hints and clues into their relationship.
Most fans don't like nor want to accept the idea that there are gay idols out there. They want their idols to be pure, innocent, untouched and straight. That's not realistic nor true.
Like you I believe in taekook but I'm also OT7. I love BTS music, what they stand for and especially the love the members have for each other.
Thanks for the ask and I hope you have a wonderful day 😊

Dramas I watched this past month!
Overprotected Kahoko (jdrama) 8
I'm on a quest to find good jdramas because when they're bad, they're crazy bad, but when they're good, they become instant comfort. The vibes in this one are 100% there. Overprotected by her mother, a 22-year-old meets her complete opposite, and in the midst of falling in love, she decides she wants to become a real adult… all this around her messy (yet charming) relatives. It was a small cute, and heartwarming family drama. I don’t really have much to say other than that I love Kahoko, she’s the cutest.
Queen of the Ring (kdrama) 7?
FL puts on a ring that has the ability to make her crush see her as a beautiful girl. I watched this one because I loved Kim Seul Gi in Splash Splash Love and Ahn Hyo Seop was enough excuse to check it out. I kinda hated it but enjoyed it at the same time? It makes me mad to see how they judged everything by looks (especially both ML and FL) but let’s be honest, It was realistic. It was a bit hard to believe, though, because I didn’t think the FL was ugly at all. What didn’t convince me about this one was that most of the love story happens while she’s wearing the ring and so it kinda ruins it for me.
Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun (jdrama) ?
Kinda good girl x bad boy trope? Except the bad boy isn't really a bad boy, he just looks like one.
I can’t really rate by number because it was too short and, to be honest, I got what I expected. Soft and simple. He fixes bikes and fixes her, they later begin to hang out and get closer. No serious drama, just two people starting a relationship.
Touch Your Heart (kdrama) 7.5
A rom-com drama with Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na’s amazing chemistry from Goblin sounds so good on paper. I feel like I should have watched this one right after I watched Goblin, but I never did.
Even though the chemistry between them was still there and strong, the show and both characters felt a bit stiff? They could have used them a lot better but were given a kind of meh storyline that bored me a little too much by episode 12. Still, they had their moments, and… it’s them 🥹 it’s impossible not to like (despite everything else).
D.P. Season 1 (kdrama) 10
I’ve been putting it off because, even though I knew it was going to be good, in drama world, I go to romance lol.
I 100% watched this because of Jung Hae In (and I was low-key curious about Koo Kyo Hwan after watching him in that episode of Attorney Woo.) Neither of them disappointed. In fact, they gave more than what I was expecting. Their dynamic and acting was impeccable. I really have nothing to say about this one because, yeah, it's a 10/10.
W: Two Worlds (kdrama) 8.5
Nothing beats a 2016 kdrama lol. I started obsessed with this one (even though I remember never adding it to my watchlist because I thought it wouldn't be my cup of tea, silly me). The storyline was extremely entertaining, although all in all, I'm not 100% sure it made sense.
I literally feel like I've lived so much watching it. I was on episode seven, and so many things had happened that I had no idea how they would continue it, and yet things KEPT HAPPENING, and plots kept getting twisted. Perhaps that's the reason why I binged the 12 eps of the drama, but it took me a while to finish the three last episodes. At some point, things started to lose sense, and I couldn't understand what was really going on, which resulted in me getting bored. All in all, it was a worth-it drama though. The romance was 11/10 (kept me on my knees) and the soundtrack 10/10 (old dramas have such bangers man)
Perfect Marriage Revenge (kdrama) 7.5/8
I usually don't like watching these types of drama because sinister family members who do shit just to hurt the leads make my blood boil. Like there's no way someone is THAT evil. I did enjoy this one, though. It was nothing out of the ordinary, but I really liked the love story, the ML's family, and the evil people getting what they deserve.

Hello! I'm fairly new to the Asian BL world, and I would just like to thank you for the amazing content you have on this blog, it has really guided me to watch some great shows. However, I have been very much into queer media before this, mainly in the form of books though, so I'm not really new to that aspect of the genre. I can understand the hype around western shows like heartstopper- its queer friendly and in English so a lot of people are really impressed by it. Do you think the reason western queer shows are more widely received is just because they are in English or do you think it's because these shows are more "queer" rather than more "BL"? Idk if this makes sense but there's this show called Young Royals which I personally really enjoyed but it's in Swedish, not English. Do you think a reason why western queer media is more hyped about than asian BL is because it has better queer representation? Is there anything unique to asian BL that you think sets it apart from queer media and it makes it more interesting to watch?
Hi! Welcome to the madness.
Do I think Western gay YA romcoms do "better" because they're more queer friend or because they're in English?
Tumblr media
Never discount the basic human laziness factor which, in English speakers in particular, comes out in a remarkable resistances to reading captions.
Because, that’s just SO MUCH work. Our poor baby eyeballs are so weak.
Tumblr media
How do I explain the success of, Young Royals?
It’s on Netflix.
I mean, were are all happily hanging out here mucking about with Viki and GaGa (and...). But how many westerners do you know IRL who actually fuck with these streaming services? Only my friends who are into Kdramas know about Viki, and no one I know knows about GaGa. And I work in, ya know, the goddamn entertainment industry.
So yeah, distribution makes a HUGE difference.
Tumblr media
Do you think a reason why western queer media is more hyped about than asian BL is because it has better queer representation?
Only if you hang out in queer circles, and/or listen to the wokes of pop culture tooting their own wank horns on NPR or whateves. (said affectionately, of course i listen, it’s my business to do so, but oof those academics can get pedantic - says the most pedantic person on tumblr)
[Don’t winch at me YR fans, yes yes it’s very good, just not my thing, okay?]
Tumblr media
Mainstream hype?
Not really.
The entertainment consuming masses don’t care about rep of any kind. They just want to be entertained to their regrettable lack of standards.
So, entertained by preferably low-level reality TV bullpucky, true crime, and an apparently endless appetite for pseudo-military, savior complex, sanitized-medical-hero propaganda. (oooo my hatred of CSI and Law&Order is showing)
Ah, yes, I didn’t sleep last night. I’m salty af. Forgive me? But at least I’m honest. Right?
Tumblr media
Is there anything unique to asian BL that you think sets it apart from queer media and it makes it more interesting to watch?
Yes. And mostly that’s what I natter on about in this blog.
The wide range of settings, plots and choices in terms of things like paranormal elements, magical realism, family dynamics, households, daily life, foods, etc...
Ranging length of treatments that fall outside of the Hollywood (or BBC) standards for movies, mini-series, or series.
Varied languages and cultures (of course). And the fun side analysis that comes with trying to understand both aspects, including translation quandaries.
The predominantly happy endings and fluff (avoidance of gritty and realistic folderol) especially in the last 5 years
The uses of traditionally yaoi archetypes and tropes
The use of non-western narrative structures, mythologies, religions, and foundational elements of story
Basically I’m just naming all the things I like about Asian BL. At root this makes the whole genre, for me, that much more escapist. And that’s what I want in my entertainment, soemthing that transports me and comforts me at the same time.

welcome to my selfship blog! you can call me vanitas (he/it/they)! i'm an adult in my 20s so i prefer people over 18 following me. dedicated selfshipper since 2021! please see this carrd for extended ship bios and brief content warnings. extended BYF below the cut.
♡ main blog | kpop blog | kdrama/tv blog | kpop fandom relics ♡
fine with: headcanons, fanart, questions, the term "himedanshi"
on the fence about (these are all due to comfort purposes and i myself am a part of some of these communities; please understand): fictionkin/IRL/DA/introjects of/with these characters, canon claimers (those who claim to be a part of or have "kin memories" of any of my AUs)
not okay with: sharing main f/os (due to comfort/healing purposes, sorry) non-worksafe questions or fanart if i don't know you, harrassment over sharing or harrassment of multiselfshippers, comments about "stealing", "unloyalty", or "çųçk1ñg"; even jokes about these things
Tumblr media
other things to note: the dynamic between my self insert/me and trickster is very cat and mouse and contains themes of unknowingly one-sided obsession/possession (see carrd above for a slightly better explanation). nothing shared here will be extremely graphic, though it may get semi-suggestive (this same level of mild semi-suggestiveness can be applied to saejin as well)/a little bit dark at times. please keep this in mind and block me first if you're not comfortable with this.
SAEJIN IS NOT A REAL PERSON NOR IS HE THE PERSONA OF A REAL PERSON. he is a hyper-realistic 3D avatar known as a NUKE from his group, superkind's, lore; completely fictional.
targeted online harrassment and discourse gives me extreme anxiety and triggers my paranoia. i will ignore/delete all replies and messages related to these things, and will more than likely unfollow/block if you repeatedly partake in or put stuff like that on my dash. do not tag me in posts related to these matters either.
its fine to reblog text posts that aren't mine with stuff like "me and (insert your f/o name)", etc., but try not to do this with my own personal posts tagged #vanitrickster or #vanijin please!
Tumblr media
other characters that i'm very attached to and may briefly mention here from time to time (things are not as serious between us, but i still hold them very close to me - sharing is fine unless i say otherwise, and they're in no particular order, however, you should block first if you're not okay with occasional affection towards these characters): yoon yoonjae (reply 1997), lan wangji (mdzs), teh (i told sunset about you), yuna (final fantasy), prompto argentum (final fantasy), mr insanity (dprverse), der tod (elisabeth das musical), kang saebyeok (squid game) - all will be tagged with the catch-all "ccposting".

i don’t understand why people question you drawing characters more realistic especially representing asians who have darker complexions. kpop and kdramas got y’all tripping lol and you are so brave nibs… are you writing in pen??? 👁️ i could never
tbh I didn’t mind that anon much since it seemed pretty genuine, though you are right that there are people who are super annoying about it (normally I just delete the ones that bug me lmao)
and yeah I am writing in pen haha I can’t stand the texture of pencil so I use ballpoint pen for pretty much everything

Hi....If you don't mind, can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
of course 👍👍 i have not answered this question before . here u are :
1. Mob Psycho 100 - i genuinely think this anime has completely changed the way i view life, other people and also myself forever, and also has made me feel more comfortable in confronting and talking more with people. its also really cute uniquely-animated show with silly funny characters. #reigen4life
2. Mystery To Iunakare (Don't Call It Mystery) - while i think this jdrama/manga is fairly unknown internationally, in japan its quite popular. Even with the lack of international love, i am obssessed with it, because i like how its homoerotic as hell, the little mysteries, how it portrays did (dissociative identity disorder; this disorder is extremely stigmatized so its nice to have a character that is a somewhat realistic portrayal of it), sympathy for abuse victims and that they're completely justified in killing their abusers, silly guys befriending random criminals on ths street, etc. It's a fun show that has an aura of tragedy surrounding it, and i love comedy and tragedy!!!!!!
3. Move To Heaven (kdrama) - every episode, i cried, straight up bawling my eyes out at how this show chooses to portray the dead through their belongings. the cinematography is so breathtakingly beautiful and makes me feel so calm and peaceful even though ik im gonna be crying in the next few minutes.
my favorite episode is episode 9, where i relate to kang seong-min/matthew green, being treated as a foreigner in your own home country hit hard. the loneliness and the frustration of people treating you differently because they see you as an alien that doesn't know where it is and doesn't understand anything. it hits even harder the more times i rewatch it.
it also has my 3 faves things in a show: autism, queerness and tragedy!!
4. D.P (deserter pursuit; kdrama) - this show is such a good critique of the military and toxic masculinity. i haven't finished season 2, but it's still at the top of my list because of how much emotions it made me feel, anger sadness disgust etc. like !!!!!!! i hold so deeply in my heart the nuances of trauma. queerness. tragedy. the way mandatory rotc brings so many people to their lowest point in life while the military does nothing to help them. victims of abuse never being able to get their voices heard or make an impact despite sacrificing their own life in order to make a change.
idk, its just a really cute and silly show ^-^
5. I Told Sunset About You (tv series) - in every episode i cried as well, sobbing screaming running around the walls WAILING. i like how it portrays the struggle of being a poor bisexual asian person who has just recently found out they're queer.
i love the whole "self hatred and unwillingness to accept your identity, causing you to hurt others in the process" thing, because it makes teh a more nuanced character to me, that he's not perfect or flawless and that he's a person that does not know how to react to finding out he's queer, having to constantly feel pressured to be better than his older brother, feeling pressured to repress his identity, etc. etc.
(i don't know if i can say the same for the second addition, "i promised you the moon", though, that one was mostly just fine, not as good as the original, but fine.)
6. The Untamed/Mo Dao Zu Shi (cdrama vers.) - i feel like you already know the answer as to why i like this one alot. its tragic, its queer, its convuluted, it has so many dead characters, etc. everything i love to see in media all put together!! wen ning my son 🫶🫶🫶
7. Everything Everywhere All At Once (movie) - this movie made me kind of understand me and my foster grandmother's relationship more, and has really influenced me to work on communicating with her better, and that i can do silly shit that makes me happy all i want. Forever. seriously made me want to continue living on despite my own country not being able to accept my queer existence.
8. Call Me Chihiro/Chihiro-san (movie) - one thing i love about call me chihiro is its calm chaoticness, how the protag just seems to go with the flow of life. i think the relationships chihiro forms with the people in the town are so beautiful and personal ,, it feels so peaceful and happy despite all the bad things that happen in it, like there's this hopefulness and composed even under pressure type of vibe to it that made me tie it close to my heart
9. Saving Face (movie) - this movie is pretty much SUPER ICONIC in like, the world of asian lesbian films, and for a pretty good reason too,, i feel like it emulates so much of the average lesbian experience with having an Asian family. the casual racism from the mother, the lesbophobia, the matchmaking, the constant peer pressuring into getting a boyfriend, etc etc. i cannot think of one scene in this movie where it didn't directly remind me of lesbian tomfoolery that happened in my life.
it's also just a really cute movie about acceptance and has a good ending (which is rare for lesbian films)
10. Marry My Dead Body (movie) - the concept of this movie is unusual but the execution is so good i can't even. like it made me cry 3 seperate times. while not obssessed with this movie that much, so i can't talk too much of it but its cute!!!!! i thought i was going to get the ick bc of the homophobic main character but he started to grow on me the more he changed his views when he got accidentally ghost married to a guy. and also how they got each others backs all the time and won't hesitate to sacrifice themselves to protect the other is so real. #lintzuchingfan4life

Connect Ep 1 thoughts
Ok so I just finished epsiode one of ‘Connect’.
It’s a Disney + kdrama but I found it on Hulu so that’s where I’m watching it.
About this K-drama: Connect is a gritty k-drama about a man whose body regenerates. Through a bunch of gross things, one of his eyeballs is removed and transplanted into a serial killer. The two become “connected.”
Random takeaways:
If you like dramas like Sweet Home you might like this. It’s dark and features a trauma baby lead (love that!). It’s set in a really dark world which is a bit hard to understand at first. For a while I had no idea what was going on and the only character of sympathy is the lead so far.
Jung Hae In is so so good in any role. He’s just one of those talents. But after this and snowdrop I honestly really miss him as a soft slice of life lead. I want THAT FOR HIM.
This show loves man nipples and butts??? It kinda goes out of it’s way to make sure you see them which I guess if you’re into that for science, you’d like it? I find it very funny, especially in a kdrama.
GROSS GROSS GROSS! If you like blood, gore, realistic dead bodies dripping blood and damaged villains, this drama is for you. Like it kinda tries extra hard to be as disgustingly realistic as possible regarding gore (which is not something I attribute to most k-dramas) and it was hard for me to watch. I’m a big baby though??
I’m not really sure about this drama. It seems interesting but I’m not confident that it can stay the course in an orderly fashion. Do I want to take the “find the serial killer” journey with these people???
I do hope the lead gets his eye back ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
