in which I see Real Movies for the very first time
When I looked back on the movies I watched in 2023, I was a little sad to realize I had only watched a bunch of Scooby-Doo movies, Barbie (which was stupid), Jennifer Lawrence's comedy No Hard Feelings (which was also stupid), and Die Hard (which I hated).
Near the end of December I was trying to force myself through the Mario movie, because it was on Netflix and a bunch of people had told me to see it. And I was about 15 minutes in and found myself thinking, I wish I were dead. There's more than an hour left and I have lost my will to live.
And then I remembered: I did not have to watch the Mario movie.
I can't explain this. It was like waking up from a spell.
I stopped the movie. I thought, Movies are for normalizing exploitative, hypermasculine violence and selling toys. I will never watch another movie ever again.
Then I thought: Is it movies I don't like? Or is it corporate, militaristic americana bullshit?
I did not know the answer. I decided to try to find the answer by starting my New Years resolution: Stop Watching Bad Movies I Hate and Watch Good Ones Instead.
Here's what I've seen so far, in order:
Tumblr media
14 movies. 4 languages. 4 new releases. 1 classic. 5 women directors. 1 rewatch. An unexpected number of anti-imperialist Irish movies.
Yeah, so. I like movies. A lot, maybe. This month I felt like I traveled to London, Belfast, Lima, Tehran, Kampala, Mexico City, Paris, and New Zealand, and it was awesome.
Mini reviews:
Tar: Literally the best movie I've ever seen. Psychological, surreal, intense. A++
Hunger: Says "fuck you" to traditional storytelling arcs and also to the British. A+
Skinamarink: It didn't scare me but I respect its decisions. C
Charade: At one point Audrey Hepburn dips her finger into Cary Grant's chin cleft and says, "How do you shave in there?" At a later point Cary Grant says to her, "Hasn't it occurred to you that I'm having a tough time keeping my hands off you?" These moments were A+, but: This was like a proto-action movie, complete with chase scenes and shootouts, and I was so bored despite Audrey Hepburn being in it. It made me wonder: What if I refuse to watch any more movies that use violence for entertainment for the rest of 2024? What if?? Who can stop me???
The Wind that Shakes the Barley: A young Cillian Murphy fights the English in 1920's Ireland. Lots of violence but none of it for entertainment. A+
Kneecap: The true story of 3 Irish-language rappers from Belfast. I forgot how fun it is to watch high people perform on stage. A hilarious, well-written, well-plotted middle finger. A++
Don't Worry Darling: This deserves more acclaim than it got and I blame misogyny. The Truman Show but more thoughtful. A+
Lord of the Rings: You don't need me to review LOTR.
Sujo: About the son of a Mexican cartel gunman trying to break a cycle of violence. Slow, well-shot. B
Sebastian: About a gay writer in London who uses sex work to inform his fiction. Overlong. I recommend the French film Eastern Boys instead. B-
Reinas: About a Peruvian family in the 1990's trying to emigrate to the US. Made me remember my own childhood and also made me desperately want to visit Lima. Bright, beautiful, touching, with a dope soundtrack. A+
No Bears: Meta, fourth-wall-breaking Iranian film about a director named Jafar Panahi who's in trouble with the authorities. Directed by Jafar Panahi, who was shortly after imprisoned. A+
Belfast: About 1960's Belfast. A little simplistic. Not as good as the other Irish history films I saw this month. B
Queen of Katwe: Based on the real-life Ugandan chess champion Phiona Mutesi, who recently said she unreservedly loves this film. It's better imo than The Queen's Gambit. Chess isn't about making it to the world championship. Chess is about what keeps you afloat when your house floods. Chess is about showing up even when it's hard. Chess is about fulfilling the dream of one day buying your mama a home. A rare "inspirational" Disney film that didn't feel fake. A+
Going forward:
I want to watch more world cinema! Guys! I'd only ever seen one other film in Spanish in my whole life. This was my first time seeing an Iranian film. This is mostly because I didn't watch many movies to start with, but, again, maybe I would have watched more if it had dawned on me that I don't have to see cars driving fast after other cars in the last 30 minutes of every single god damned film.
I don't want to watch any action films this year. I'm so exhausted. I'm so tired. Hollywood, I think I hate you.
I want to watch weird whacky Japanese New Wave films and films about the Spanish Civil War and films that remind me of parts of my own childhood I haven't thought about in 15 years.
I feel so alive!!!

A Place for Them Both
Jean Pierre Polnareff x child, female reader
Requested by: @weeaboo-god
Warnings: bit of angst, fluff
Please enjoy.
Tumblr media
Normally, stories of abandoned houses haunted by ghosts didn’t bother the group; though this one did. Apparently, the house was haunted by a girl who had fallen severely ill one day and killed her parents with powers that a human shouldn’t have. That was what caught there attention. By the sounds of it, it could be a Stand user.
So, like moths attracted to light, they went to investigate.
***
Deciding it was better to split up and investigate the large house, the group went off. Polnareff was against the idea as -from his experience with horror movies and Scooby Doo cartoons- splitting up never amounted to anything good, though he had no choice in it. As he searched the rooms, he found all of them empty; except one. In the room was a small, [Hair colour] girl who laid curled under her bed, hiding from him. He only found her because the carpet corner was folded rather than flat.
Wide [Eye colour] orbs watched him with fear as if he was a form of monster ready to snatch her away somewhere and eat her. For some reason, looking into those eyes of hers, Polnareff felt something and -for a split moment- he saw his Sherry in this girl. She was not possessed or cursed, but she was lost, confused and scared. And he wanted to change that.
It had taken a bit of coaxing before Polnareff was able to get the girl out from under the bed; the second she was out, she latched onto him like a teddy bear. He stood up and set her down. Her eyes looked past him and they widened at Silver Chariot behind him. He has asked if she could see it and she nodded. With a bit of effort, her own Stand materialised. Her Stand may have been small but there was no denying it had power. This was what made people so afraid of her.
The second he took her to the others, she latched onto his leg, trying to hide behind him. Polnareff calmed [Name], telling her they weren’t going to hurt her.
And that was how [Name] became a part of their little crusade.
***
[Name] cowered behind the overturned table, holding her hands over her ears as the fight waged on. They were supposed to be having breakfast at a small cafe when an enemy Stand decided to strike. Polnareff had told [Name] to stay put, stay hidden and not move. She did just that but it became difficult when she saw Kakyoin get thrown across the cafe like a ragdoll.
She rushed over to him and tried to pull him to safety when she felt a hand grab her and lift her into the air. The enemy Stand user laughed at her attempts to protect Kakyoin, his grip tightening around her throat.
“Get the hell away from her!” Polnareff shouted, Silver Chariot appearing and repeatedly impaling the user -careful not to harm [Name]- and even went to the point of tacking him away from her. Once he was dead, Polnareff rushed over to [Name] and checked if she was alright. Her small arms wrapped around him, holding onto him tightly as he held her.
“I thought you were hurt for a moment.” [Name] buried her head into his shoulder. Polnareff looked up at Kakyoin who smiled at him, giving him a small nod of his head to confirm he was alright himself.
***
As the group sat at the table, [Name] looked at the menu with a perplexed expression, unable to read a single thing on the menu. She may have lived in this place for a bit but she never learnt to read any of the language. Mr Joestar smiled down at her, explaining to her what each item was and waiting to see if there was anything that caught he interest. Polnareff had headed to the bathroom, leaving them alone to order for him as well.
Once the food arrived, [Name] made no move to start eating. Mr Joestar noticed this and rose a brow,
“You alright, [Name]?” he asked the [Hair colour] girl who nodded at him.
“I’m waiting for Polnareff. My parents told me to always wait until everyone was at the table before eating.” Those words made Mr Joestar smile lightly, setting his fork down and also waiting. If these little things helped made [Name] feel more accepted and apart of their crusade then he was happy to comply.
Not seconds later, Polnareff rushed from the bathroom, eyes scanning the room as he rambled something about a Stand user before running out the restaurant. [Name] jumped from her seat and chased after him, worry flooding her body. She knew how dangerous some enemies could be and she didn’t want to lose Polnareff. She was not ready to lose another family, not again.
After weaving through the crowd of people outside, [Name] was able to find Polnareff talking to a man dressed much like a cowboy. She didn’t make herself known, staying close to the mouth of the alley she hid in and watched. Maybe... Just maybe they wouldn’t fight?
A hand n her shoulder caught her attention, she turned to see Mr Avdol there, motioning her to be quiet. She nodded and remained silent. She knew that Mr Avdol’s Magician’s Red was strong, he could easily protect Polnareff if needed. The sudden sound of a gunshot struck fear into the small girl. She reached out but Mr Avdol was already ahead of her, tackling Polnareff out of the way of the bullet.
“I was worried about you and now look where you are.” Avdol scolded, earning an annoyed look from Polnareff. “How do you think [Name] would react if you were killed?” That single question shot down any argument that the Frenchman was going to fire out. In his midst of searching for his sister’s killer, he had almost abandoned his care for [Name].
[Name] looked over and smiled brightly at the sight of Kakyoin at the end of the road, though the smile was short lived when she saw the bullet go through Mr Avdol’s head and him fall to the ground. What? A quiet, almost confused sound, escaped her, as if she didn’t believe what she had just witnessed.
All care for remaining hidden was forgotten as she fled the safety of the shadows and rushed to Mr Avdol’s side, trying to wake the man up. Kakyoin having the same idea. His hands covered in blood as he tried to wake the bleeding male up, [Name] ripped a bit of her scarf off and tried to wrap it around the injury on his head. This is what adults did to help each other get better right? She’s seen doctors do it.
“Come on, Mr Avdol. You can’t sleep here, it’s too dangerous.” the small [Hair colour] girl said, lightly shaking him. It was pointless, Kakyoin knew that. Avdol was dead. Setting the man down, the red haired teen turned to [Name], taking her small hands into his; this action telling her it was no use. [Name] looked down, small tears pricking her [Eye colour] orbs.
“That’s what he gets for lecturing people.” Polnareff’s voice caught their attention. His back turned to them as he spoke, “Now look at him.”
Kakyoin seemed taken back by this, his lavender eyes glaring at Polanreff’s back whilst he held onto [Name]. “What did you say, Polnareff?” he forced out, trying to keep his language clean and his anger calm, and almost failing for both. “Mr Avdol was worried about you.”
“Who asked him for help because I never did?” [Name] looked at the Frenchman with teary eyes. Why was he saying such cruel things about Mr Avdol? Was it like how her father would be? Say horrible things when he was angry?
The banter was thrown back and forth, all the while Polnareff refused to look at them. [Name] wiggled from Kakyoin’s hold, standing up and slowly approaching Polnareff. As she grew closer, she saw as water dripped to the ground. Water. Tears.
“I am sick of it.” he forced out, trying to bite back the sobs but they slipped past him, allowing everyone to hear them. He turned to face them both, tears streaming down his face much like waterfalls.
“Having people up and die on me.” he stifled a sob, almost chocking on it as he spoke. “Do you hear me?!” he cried out to someone who wasn’t there. Shoulders shaking with sobs as he chocked on them.
[Name] may have been only a child but she knew these things had a horrible impact on people, especially adults. They made adults do things they never expected to do. Drink. Smoke. Gamble. Attack others, and sometimes kill them. She didn’t want that for Polnareff.
Without hesitating, she wrapped her arms around his leg, burying her face against him and catching his attention. She could feel him shaking from the tears for a moment before his arms wrapped around her small form, holding her close as he crouched down and cried into her shoulder. [Name] just stood there, letting him get everything out whilst trying so hard to be strong for him.
“I won’t die on you, Polnareff. I promise.” she said. However, whether the promise for to Polnareff or herself was uncertain. Polnareff only tightened his hold slightly, sniffling slightly.
“You’d better not, [Name].” he muttered, loud enough for her to hear him. He couldn’t lose [Name]. She was the closest thing he had to Sherry he had left, the closest thing he could call a sister. He was not going to lose that again.
He will protect her. He will protect her like he should have protected Sherry. He will not fail a second time.

Writer’s Month 2019
Day 6: Word Prompt: kids
Mark loved his son. Tim was his world. Especially after all the hassle he had gone through during the adoption process; there was the question of stability around Mark’s main source of income coming from his YouTube channel and as well as how he would deal with travelling when con-time came around due to him being a single parent. But in the end, the case went through and Mark found himself with the adorable little Timothy. Tim was only four years old when he came to live with Mark and, in the two years that they had been a family, both Tim and Mark had settled into a comfortable routine.
Each morning, Mark would wake up early and go for a run or walk with Chica before he prepped for breakfast. Mark would then wake Tim who would pad through to the kitchen, clamber up onto his seat to eat and watch cartoons on the kitchen TV as he ate his breakfast. Mark would then drop his son off at school with money for his lunch in his pocket and his little rucksack on his back before he drove home to record some videos for the day.
On the days when recording would take longer than planned, Mark relied on one of his friends to pick Tim up. Most of Mark’s friends didn’t mind picking up the now six-year-old as Tim had a way of charming everyone he met, especially his pseudo-aunts and uncles, who all adored the little boy.
Then when all videos had been edited and uploaded to the channel, the little family would get together and eat dinner before spending quality time together; watching a movie or playing games until it was time for bed.
Mark would then tuck Tim in and whisper a “Sleep tight, Little Biscuit.” followed by a kiss to Tim’s hairline before Mark left the room switching off the lights as he went.
Life was good for the Fischbach’s.
 ~💕~
“So, did you have a good time today?” Mark asked as he entered the dining room carrying two plates of chicken with mash potatoes and mixed vegetables. He placed one plate, with a slightly smaller portion pre-cut into mouthful-size pieces, in front of his son before he settled down in his seat opposite.
“Yeah, Daddy! It was really cool! We went to the park! But it wasn’t Kyle’s mom or dad who took us, it was his big brother, Jason! He pushed us on the swings and he spun us on the roundabout! And we went super super super fast! It was awesome! Then we played hide and seek in the trees and bushes around the park! And I won because Jason helped me climb a tree and Kyle couldn’t find me for ages!” Mark smiled as he listened to his son’s tale. He expected there might be a small bit of exaggeration concerning how long it took Kyle to find the other boy but so long as he was happy.
“Remember to eat your dinner before it gets cold.” The adult in the room pointed out when Tim took a pause for breath.
“Yes, Daddy!” Tim exclaimed, suddenly gathering a large amount of chicken and potato onto his fork and trying to shove it all into his mouth.
“Not so much, Tim. Just what you can chew. You can talk after.” Tim nodded his head and began to take smaller, more appropriate bites of food. After managing to eat a few mouthfuls, Tim made a show of swallowing before taking a deep breath to start talking again.
“Then, Jason took us to McDonald’s and I got a chicken nugget Happy Meal! And then! And then! Then we went for ice cream at Scooby Doo’s!” Mark smiled at his son, knowing that ‘Scooby Doo’s’ was Tim’s way of saying ‘Scoopy Doo’, a little cafe and ice cream shop in town that sold homemade ice cream in a wide variety of flavours from the normal and expected to those unique to the cafe.
“That sounds like fun,” The adult remarked as Tim shovelled another forkful of food into his mouth. “Did you get your favourite?”
“Yup! I gots a large cone and a flake!” Mark knew all about the flake, when he had picked Tim up, the boy had flecks of chocolate smeared into his t-shirt along with the large ice cream drip stains. “Then we went back to Kyle’s house and we played in his garden all afternoon! We played pirates and guarded our treasures from the evil shark that wanted to steal it! It was so much fun! We pretended that the treehouse in Kyle’s garden was our ship and Rodger was the shark!” Rodger being the other family’s pet dog; a small, excitable beagle. “And then Jason came outside and played with us in the treehouse! He was Davey Jones! And he tried sink our ship by controlling the shark! But then! We fed the shark Davey Jones’ hand like Captain Hook in Peter Pan! And we won!”
“Well, it sounds like you had a very exciting day.” Mark smiled fondly at his son as the boy scraped the last bites of food into his mouth. Tim then carefully put his fork and knife together in the centre of his plate, copying his father’s actions. “So, I guess that means that it’s an early night for a certain little boy?”
The look on Tim’s face evolved from a big smile to a look of horror and he suddenly yelled in protest, “But it’s movie night! We always stay up and watch movies on deh weekends!”
“But surely you’re too tired from your long day of being a pirate?”
           “No!”
“Alright, well how about we go and run you a bath, then once you’re in your PJs, we can put a movie in?” Tim quickly nodded and scurried from his chair as Mark stood up and carried both his plate and Tim’s plate over to the sink, to wash up as Tim took his bath.
The running footsteps alerted Mark to Tim’s presence and when he turned around, he found his son donned in his bathrobe, hugging a clear plastic box to his chest. Mark led the way through to the bathroom, where he filled up the tub with warm water and helped Tim to get settled. He then gave Tim his bath crayons and dropped a couple of toys into the water before he said, “I’ll just be in the kitchen, so just shout if you need anything.” Tim nodded his head though he seemed to be already engrossed in creating his first piece of artwork on the tiled wall.
For the next fifteen minutes, Mark washed up the dishes and wiped the countertops before he retreated to Tim’s bedroom to set out the boy’s pyjamas. Once Mark had completed the few tasks he needed to, he rejoined his son in the bathroom.
Tim had been busy during the time Mark had been away. The white tiles on the walls now held a collage of colourful pictures. One was, Mark assumed, supposed to be Tim and Kyle on a pirate ship, with a strange beagle-shark hybrid cresting the spiky waves, jagged teeth gnashing. Another image, Mark guessed, was supposed to be Tim’s family; Tim in the centre with Mark next to him, and then gradually scattered all around was Mark’s close friends who had all begun to fulfill large roles in the young boy’s life. Then the other images seemed to be a collection of rainbow animals, though if you asked Mark to identify them, he certainly would have struggled to give any definite names or labels.
“Hey, Squishy, ready to wash your hair?” Tim turned his attention away from his latest drawing, something that used a lot of green, and nodded to his dad, dropping the crayon into the plastic box. Mark reached out for the children’s shampoo and set about washing his son’s hair for him. “Ready to get out now, or do you want to play some more?” Mark asked once Tim had finished rinsing the product from his hair.
“Play more!” Tim exclaimed, enthusiastically, suddenly thrusting a shark toy into his dad’s hands, “You’re the shark, Daddy!”
Mark laughed, glad he was already wearing short sleeves as he plunged his hands into the water to make the shark swim. “Okay, ten more minutes then we’ll get you ready for bed before we watch a movie.” Tim nodded and grabbed the boat toy, talking as though he were the pirates aboard the boat.
By the time the Fischbach’s were ready to settle down and put on a movie, it was almost eight thirty. Tim had been changed into his Spiderman-themed pyjamas, had brushed his teeth and was hugging his favourite teddy bear; handmade with black button eyes and a little pink moustache, dressed in a little red-and-white striped jacket. Mark had similarly changed into his pyjama pants and a comfy t-shirt and was happily curled up under a blanket with his son under one arm and Chica under the other. The movie played in the quiet of the living room, the only other sound being the rhythmic thudding of Chica’s tail as it wagged happily against the fabric of the sofa.
It wasn’t even half an hour into the film when Tim was out cold, snoring lightly. Mark sat in place for a while, ensuring that the boy was fully asleep before he carefully untangled himself from the blanket and lifted Tim into his arms. Chica padded behind the man, happy to follow along behind as Mark made his way to Tim’s bedroom. Carefully, he balanced the small boy against his chest with one arm as he pulled back the duvet to tuck Tim in.
Tim stirred for a moment but showed no sign of waking. Mark smiled and bent down to kiss Tim’s forehead, whispering a good night into the boy’s hair. He turned back towards the door to see Chica staring at him, head tilted to one side. She sat at the end of the bed and lightly pet at the floor with her front paws.
“Come on, Chica, out. Maybe when he’s older.” Mark whispered, gently urging the dog out the door. “Okay, bed, Chica.” Chica seemed reluctant but eventually she padded out the door, followed by Mark after he had switched on the night light on the chest of drawers.
Mark then walked with Chica to the sliding door leading out to the patio and back garden and let the dog outside. He flicked on the outside lights and left Chica to her business as he set to work cleaning the bathroom.
Half an hour later found Mark locking all the doors and checking the windows. Chica was back inside and likely to be upstairs in Mark’s bedroom, curled up on the dog pillow. On his way to his bedroom, he peeked his head into Tim’s room to check on his son and smiled as he saw the small lump shuffle. Mark smiled softly, pulling the door mostly shut but leaving it slightly ajar.
Mark brushed his teeth and did his night time routine in the en suite of the Master bedroom. Chica raised her head to look at him as he made his way over to the bed. The dog bed was positioned at the end of the double bed, pressed up right against the side. Mark pet the dog’s head lovingly as he passed, leaning down to press a quick kiss to the dog’s nose. “’Night pupper.”
Climbing under the covers, Mark got himself comfortable before running through tomorrow’s plan. Tim was back at school. He’d gotten his homework done on the Saturday – Tim had sat with Mark as he edited some videos in the home office, working through the sheet of symmetrical shapes and looking for real-world examples - and his backpack was all ready to go by the front door. Mark had already planned out which videos he would be recording and which games he would play, he usually aimed to try and get two or three filmed, even if they weren’t all edited straight away.
It didn’t take Mark long to fall asleep, listening to the slow huffs from Chica.

Hey but sorry to bother u but could give me those book recs? Relying on u girl
of course!! sorry bout the long wait, dear x
you said you preferred trilogies or series’ (which i don’t read much of tbh) so here are a few of my favorites: (( some of these will have full on summaries and some… not so much, i got lazy lol ))
The Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout : Meet Katy and Daemon! Katy is a funny, down-to-earth book blogger who has just moved to West Virginia. And Daemon? Well, he’s her hot and arrogant next-door neighbor. He’s also an alien. This one is cheesy, yeah, but it’s so FUN! Follow along as Katy and Daemon try to figure out what they mean to each other while trying not to get killed by the Arum; the Lumen’s enemy. In this world, the DOD is well aware that aliens exist and that they live on Earth. However, they are unaware that the aliens known as Luxen actually possess powers that make them.. well… powerful beyond means. This isn’t just a romance story; it focuses on family and friendships and it has a bunch of kick ass action and the entire plot with the DOD is so interesting.
The Pine Deep Series by Jonathan Maberry ; I’m only on the first book but this one is a bit more mature in terms of horror and things like that. If you like scary books or feel like being spooky in time for Halloween, you should definitely check this one out!
The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare : I’m sure you know about this one, but if you don’t! Angels, demons, warlocks, vampires, faeries, werewolves? What more could you want? When Clary Fray discovers she’s actually a Shadowhunter; an appointed warrior of the Angel Raziel and has angel blood coursing through her veins, her life is about to change forever. Join her and the rest of the Shadowhunter gang (and even a few others) as they team up to rescue her mom and stop an all out war from happening.
The Darkest Minds Series by Alexandra Bracken ; I’m only on the first book but I absolutely love it! It’s an intense read that has me on the edge of my seat constantly. I adore Ruby and she’s easily become one of my favorite female characters of all time.
Dorothy Must Die Series by Danielle Paige ; Okay. I know, I know. Really? Dorothy Must Die? Hear me out! This book is FUN. Trashy? Perhaps, but fun! The first book is really fast paced and honestly? I am living for a world where Dorothy is evil. So basically our main character is named Amy and she is the other girl from Kansas. She’s sent to Oz to save it from Dorothy Gale who has become power hungry and is now pure evil along with the Tin-Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow. The rest of the series doesn’t really live up to the first book, but I would say you should read the first one anyway. It’s a lot of fun.
Did I Mention I Love You Series by Estelle Maskame: Sixteen-year-old Eden Munro decides to spend the summer with her father in Santa Monica as her parents are divorced now. Once there, she meets her father’s new family and that includes Tyler Bruce; her new asshole step brother with a short temper and a huge ego but as she gets to learn more about him, she finds herself falling for him. This trope isn’t for everyone and I know the whole step sibling thing is super taboo but this series is awesome and I read it during a huge reading slump and it really helped me get though it.
Perfect Chemistry Series by Simone Elkeles: When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she’s worked so hard for―her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. (Each book in this series focuses on a different Fuentes brother.)
Fighting to Be Free Series by Kirsty Moseley: Jamie Cole has just been released from juvenile detention. Determined to go straight, he tries to cut ties with crime boss Brett Reyes - but Brett has no intention of letting him go. Jamie’s life is already more complicated than it needs to be, yet it’s when he meets a beautiful stranger at a bar that Jamie knows he’s really in over his head. Ellie Pearce has just come out of a terrible relationship and isn’t looking for anything serious; until she meets Jamie. Their attraction is overwhelming and intense - she can’t seem to shake her growing feelings for him, even though she’s trying to keep it casual. But when fate goes horribly wrong and Jamie’s family is faced with ruin, he’s forced to strike a deal with Brett. Despite his struggles, he wants nothing more than a future with Ellie. That’s until Ellie finds out that he’s been hiding more from her than she could ever imagine.
Mind if I drop in a few stand alone’s? I’m trying to read more series’ but I’ve always been more of a stand alone kind of girl, so here are some of my current favs:
#MurderTrending by Gretchen McNeil : WELCOME TO THE NEAR FUTURE, where good and honest citizens can enjoy watching the executions of society’s most infamous convicted felons, streaming live on The Postman app from the suburbanized prison island Alcatraz 2.0. When seventeen-year-old Dee Guerrera wakes up in a haze, lying on the ground of a dimly lit warehouse, she realizes she’s about to be the next victim of the app. Knowing hardened criminals are getting a taste of their own medicine in this place is one thing, but Dee refuses to roll over and die for a heinous crime she didn’t commit. Can Dee and her newly formed posse, the Death Row Breakfast Club, prove she’s innocent before she ends up wrongfully murdered for the world to see? Or will The Postman’s cast of executioners kill them off one by one?
One Small Thing by Erin Watt : Meet Beth and Chase. Beth is entering her senior year and is still trying to move on from the death of her older sister three years ago. In a small town with parents who have suddenly become her wardens; that seems nearly impossible. And then she meets the mysterious and hot Chase who immediately draws her in. Their attraction is instant and he’s the first person who makes her feel like Beth Jones and not Lizzie; the young girl who lost a sister and is somehow broken by it. But as she falls harder for Chase, she’s hit with the reality of the part he played in her sister’s death. It’s about forgiveness, love, and moving on. It’s sad and sweet and such a fun, quick read. Definitely good for trying to get out of a slump!
Autoboyography by Christina Lauren :  Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community. If you read one book off of this list, PLEASE let it be this one. This book is so… amazing. It’s been months and I still think about it constantly.
Fault Line by C. Desir : Trigger WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS A RAPE. It is not shown, but it’s the main conflict in the book. Over the years I have struggled with if I liked this book because it was good or if I liked it because of how much it fucked me up. I read this book in one sitting and when I finished, I sat in my bed for a good hour and just…. didn’t move or do anything. You will NOT be rooting for the main couple. The narrator is unlikable and you will HATE all the characters in this book. The ending is NOT happy and I don’t know why I’m recommending this but GOD. This book, after so many years, just stuck with me because of how fucked up it was. It deals with the whole “recovery” process in such a dark way that we normally don’t see in YA fiction and I think that’s what makes it stand out so much. If you want something darker, read this. But read it with caution. If this isn’t something you like then please, don’t bother reading it. It’s not happy and it’s sure as shit not fluffy. Summary : Ben could date anyone he wants, but he only has eyes for the new girl—sarcastic free-spirit Ani. Luckily for Ben, Ani wants him too. She’s everything Ben could ever imagine. Everything he could ever want. But that all changes after the party. The one Ben misses. The one Ani goes to alone. Now Ani isn’t the girl she used to be, and Ben can’t sort out the truth from the lies. What really happened, and who is to blame? Ben wants to help her, but she refuses to be helped. The more she pushes Ben away, the more he wonders if there’s anything he can do to save the girl he loves.
Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero : If you like Scooby-Doo or Archie’s Weird Mysteries this book is probably for you. 1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club are all grown up and haven’t seen each other since their fateful, final case in 1977. Andy, the tomboy, is twenty-five and on the run, wanted in at least two states. Kerri, one-time kid genius and budding biologist, is bartending in New York, working on a serious drinking problem. At least she’s got Tim, an excitable Weimaraner descended from the original canine member of the team. Nate, the horror nerd, has spent the last thirteen years in and out of mental health institutions, and currently resides in an asylum in Arhkam, Massachusetts. The only friend he still sees is Peter, the handsome jock turned movie star. The problem is, Peter’s been dead for years. The time has come to uncover the source of their nightmares and return to where it all began in 1977. This time, it better not be a man in a mask. The real monsters are waiting.
Fatal Throne by Candace Fleming ; A book about Henry VIII and his six wives. If you like historical fiction then this book might be for you! It’s told through the perspective of his six wives (and even Henry himself) and it’s a really fascinating read.
Okay, I think I’m going to stop here. Let me know if none of these speak to you and I’ll give you some more recs! I didn’t know what kind of genres you liked, so I tried to throw in a little bit of everything.

Survey #134
“i got detention ‘cuz i made a face; nobody believed me that it’s stuck that way.”
If you were to die today would your life be complete?  No. How good is Coca-Cola?  It's my second-favorite soda. Who was the last person you took a picture with?
My niece Aubree <3 Do you have a bad temper?
No. Do you know anyone who is pregnant right now?
One acquaintance, one old friend off the top of my head. Have you ever had someone pick you up off the ground and carry you?  Mom when I passed out. If you were in the hospital, do you think any of your exes would come see you?  Girt probably would, and he's the only one I wouldn't have a problem with visiting. If you were kicked out of your house, would the last person you texted take you in?  I'm sure they would, but it's more realistic I'd live with my dad. If you were immortal for a day, what would you do?  Skydive. What fictional place would you most like to go to?  Yo can I go to Azeroth. Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?  UHHHHHH.  I'm honestly not quite sure.  But Mark is like super high on the list, if not #1.  I'm not well-informed on a lot of people's accomplishments lajsfdaowe. What’s something you like to do the old-fashioned way?  Hmmmm.  Good question. What is one thing you really want but can’t afford?  Lmao dude I want so many expensive things atm. What is the most impressive thing you know how to do?  I almost snorted reading this question because like do you honestly expect something impressive of me.  I... guess I understand Sony Vegas well? What are some of the turning points in your life?  Uhhhh meeting my ex, the divorce, discovering my passion for photography, the breakup, re-uniting with Dad, r e c o v e r y. What’s your cure for hiccups?  NOTHING.  NOTHING WORKS. Don’t you think it’d be cool to see a colossal squid?  FUCKING NOPE THEY ARE SPAWNS OF THE NIGHTMARE REALM. What kind of steak do you prefer?  When I ate meat, I liked medium well. Has anyone ever cheated on their significant other with you?  Yes, allow me to (not) tell you about my stupid 12-year-old self. Are you fascinated by outer space?  *cue the Mark "Space is Cool" mix* Do you answer your phone when it’s a number you don’t recognize? Never. When washing your hands, do you wet your hands or put soap on first?  Put the soap on. When was the hardest you ever cried? What was the circumstance?  The night of the breakup.  I had left the house to walk to Jason's, and Mom got in the car and kept driving in front of me to stop me (I was too practically catatonic to run).  Eventually gave up, she drove me home, and when she opened the door, it was my goal to run to the kitchen and slit my throat, but the moment I made the action to run, she pretty much tackled me and I sobbed my lungs out for like 30 minutes.  Fuck that entire night. Who were your last 3 Facebook messages from and what do they say?  "lol but hey thats the world we live in lol well goodnight honey and i hope to speak to u again" from Leslie, "How quaint O:" from Girt, "Its okay :)" from Amanda. Who was the last person to comment on your Facebook status? What does the comment say?  Sara saying "YEP" when I shared a picture of straight people dating versus lesbians and it was spot-on. Which do you use the most, smiley faces, kisses or hearts?  Faces, probs. Do you like sweet or salty popcorn? Ohhhh both.  But I've gotta side with salty. Have you ever had to put your hand over someone’s mouth to keep them quiet?  Once. Have you ever fed a wild animal?  Yes. The last time you packed, where were you going?  Sara's. Do you believe in astrology?  Definitely not. Do you have an accent?  Not really, but you can pick up a southern tone with some words.  Example, my "your" sounds more like "yer," usually. Has someone ever made you a Build-A-Bear?  No. Do you sing in the shower?  I have been a tad bit lately...  I used to never. Are you satisfied with your current camera? My phone camera is SHIT, and I need a new actual camera.  55-200mm lens is broken, the other one's automatic focus setting is and I'm not great at manual focus. Have you ever been in a choir?  In Catholic church, yes. Does it bother you to have dirt on the bottom of your bare feet?  Y E S Has anyone ever told you that you have a big butt?  I literally have the flattest ass of any female you'll ever meet. Do you often skip breakfast? Pretty much daily now, yeah.  I'm fasting and don't eat until 11, so breakfast's passed. Last person who drove you somewhere (besides your parents)? Nicole. Who last grabbed your behind?  I'm sure it was Chelsea being her crazy self. Do you eat raw cookie dough?  Yeah dukes up salmonella. Do you watch Grey’s Anatomy?  No. Would you survive in prison?  No.  I would find one way or another to kill myself. Do you drink? Smoke? Do drugs? Why, or why not?  Rarely, no, no.  I drink usually in celebratory settings to loosen up some and sometimes just because I like the flavor of weak, fruity alcohol.  Smoking's gross, drugs are ew. What was the first cigarette you ever smoked?  Never smoked. Are you scared about the end of the world?  If I'mma be in it, hell yeah.  But it's not something I actively worry about because I don't think it'll happen in my lifetime. Do you prefer landmarks or street names when being given directions?  Landmarks.  I don't know street names for shit. Do you read the prologues in the beginnings of books?  Yes. Where is one place that you’d never be caught dead in?  Never be caught dead in, ever... uhhhh... nothing's coming to mind right now.  Oh wait.  Probably a strip club. Apple Jacks: yay or nay?  YAY. Do you have a favorite Scooby-Doo movie?  Yeah, but I don't remember which one. ;-;  It's that one where the girl says her name is Mary Jane and Shaggy goes, "That's, like, my favorite name."  Totally went over my head as a kid lmao. Have you ever met a guy for coffee?  No, I hate coffee anyway. Who is your pet most attached to in your family?  Teddy's most attached to me, I'm the only one who has any physical contact with Venus and she trusts me, Bentley is bonded with Mom, and Mitsu is still apprehensive of anyone. Does the last person you shared a bed with mean anything to you?  The whole world and more. What do you normally do when you’ve had a really bad day?  Cry, have a shit attitude occasionally, a nap is common, talk to Sara, binge my favorite Markiplier videos. When is the next time you will wear a dress?  Hm.  Maybe this summer if I'm confident enough in my body by then lmao. On the main page on YouTube, what’re the three recommended videos? 8-BitGaming beating SCP: Containment Breach, a DanAndPhilGAMES video of Golf With Friends, and then an 8-BitRyan vid of the full release of Raft. Do you know anyone from Canada? Yeah, my former roommate's ex. Are thongs sexy? Yeah, but oml I know I couldn't wear one. Did you grow up in a healthy environment? I wouldn't say "healthy," no.  My dad was an alcoholic at the time, parents always fought, and our neighborhood was dangerous. Heavy rain or heatwave? Heavy rain, easily.  Fuck the heat. You have a choice to shoot your father or die, what would you do?  I hate these damn questions, but I'd rather die.  My father deserves the longest and happiest life possible without the betrayal of his daughter. If killing yourself meant saving the world, would you?  Yeah.  It's a lose-lose situation for me; if I didn't, I'd still die if the world's gonna end. Who knows your most darkest memory or secret?  Jason and Mom should know, and whoever read those specific surveys. Who was the last person you almost went out with?  Meh.  Juan.  We talked and hung out once in... late 2016 I think and I was pretty confused as to how I felt about him.  Meanwhile, he hasn't kept it a secret in the least he's liked me since freshman year.  He's always treated me like a gentleman should, but I know the dark and disgusting parts of him.  Glad I decided against it. The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, or The Beatles?  Stones. What does your grandma call you?  Just my name. And what do you call your grandmother?  Grammy. Would you rather have a pool or a hot tub?  Pool. Do you think ‘everything bagels’ are disgusting?  No, but I have to be in the mood for one. Do you find serial killers fascinating?  I wouldn't call them as a whole fascinating, but what has to be going on in their brains to create such grotesque desires and creativities. Do you have high blood pressure?  No. Have you ever pumped gas?  No.  I'm 22 btw lmao. Have your parents ever caught you drinking?  I mean Mom's seen me with a drink when she didn't know I'd gotten one, but I wouldn't call it "caught" since I'm allowed to and I made no effort to make it secretive. Do you prefer writing by hand or typing? Typing.  Writing makes my carpal tunnel act up quickly, and besides, typing's way faster. Think of one of the biggest decisions you've had to make in your life. If you made a different choice, how different would your life be now?  Panicking and telling Mom when I overdosed.  I took way more than what I should've taken of a cold medicine I can't even look at now, but I don't think it would've killed me based on how I felt, but then again, the fluids or whatever I got to purge it could've saved me; however, I feel like I would've killed myself through another method if I didn't tell her.  It all led to the psychiatric care I needed. Have you ever taken a course on CPR?  No, but I should. Do you wear a watch? No, I don't even own one. When are you at your most energetic? A little after waking up.  Just gotta get over the initial drowsiness. Do you like playing cards? If so, what's your favorite game?  I don't really enjoy card games.  I liked Magic: The Gathering tho when I was with Jason, but I wasn't that good at it considering it's got like a billion rules.  I'd still play with someone who knew how to, though.  I loooove the PS3 version that was made for it, it was much easier and I found it relaxing.  And I adore the artwork like jfc. What are your parents’ natural hair colors? What is yours?  Extremely dark brown, black, dirty blonde but turned to brown. How do you react to random strangers suddenly trying to make conversation with you?  I get nervous. Do you like Slim Jims?  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS MAMA. Have you ever been in a castle? The Disney World castle, if that counts? Would you rather write a mystery or love story? A love story. Are you afraid of getting shots?  No.  I don't like them, but. Have you ever been to a night club? No. Do all good things really come to an end?  No, not all. How many people do you trust with your life?  Three. Are you too kind for your own good?  Don't think so. Have you ever held a baby? Yeah. What's your favorite '90s TV show?  The Nanny. What are you favorite book series? Warriors. Favorite superheroes?  I know he's technically an anti-hero, but does Deadpool still count?  If not, uh.  Batman I guess. Would people consider you more immature or mature? Mature, probably. Would you say most of your friends are older or younger than you?  Younger. If you have a significant other, do you get jealous of people a lot? She knows I was insecure as fuck in the beginning.  Now, nope. Who was your best friend in the fifth grade?  Ummm I think Quiata? Do your parents still help you financially?  I don't have a job.  So. Have either of your parents ever been in trouble with the law? Don't think so. Do you have a preferred brand of bottled water?  Essentia.  Thanks for not having it, NC. Are you more prone to overthinking things, or being too impulsive?  Hunny I overthink if I have to pee or not if it's not a massive need. How bad are your worst cramps on a scale of 1-10? Eh, maybe just a seven thanks to the pill. Have you ever thrown up from cramps?  No. List three people you had a hard time forgiving.  JASON, Dad, Mom multiple times. Who was your first celebrity crush?  Jesse McCartney. If applicable, what form of birth control do you use?  The pill.  But it's for cramps. Are you happy with your gender?  Yeah. What gender do you identify as?  Female. What gender were you born as? Female. Have you ever gotten high off a prescription medication?  No. Have you ever used a tampon?  Yeah. How old were you when your parents talked to you about puberty?  I don't think it's something we ever properly "talked" about, but rather indirectly when Mom taught me how to shave and told me when to start wearing a bra. How many people have you known who were suicidal?  Sadly, I think MOST people I know/most friends. What's your favorite pain reliever? Advil. Who has the cutest baby/babies you know? My nephew is literally the cutest child I have EVER seen. Do you have a lot of people blocked on Facebook? Actually yes, but most because Mom instructed me to block them when I was younger.  A few are of my own volition. What color is your razor/shaver?  Orange and white. What's your boyfriend/girlfriend's sisters name? She doesn't have any sisters. Do you like the sound of violins?  YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Would you be interested in going on a blind date?  Even if I was single, no. If you formed an unhealthy habit, would it be smoking or drinking? Oh boy, idk.  I think an alcohol addiction is more dangerous, but smoking has disgusting consequences. Have you ever bought a video game expansion pack? No. Do you wish YouTube had been around when you were a kid?  Nah.  I wouldn't want the risk of an earlier technology addiction. Do you remember preschool?  Yes. What color(s) was your backpack in high school?  Browns and black.  It was a Ouija board design. What health conditions do you have?  Physically, baaad dry scalp, dry af skin in general, inactive MRSA.  I've been over my mental ones enough. Have you ever collected seashells at the beach?  Yeah. Hi lovlies!
Today isn’t a good mental health day for me, but have no fear, that does not mean I’m not going to write! I thought that since I just went through my bad day routine and did my comfort things this would be a perfect time to share those things with you!
STEP ONE:
The very first thing I do when I wake up on a bad mental health day is to start doing comfort things on my phone before I get up. This most likely doesn’t work for everyone since getting out of bed (no matter how hard it is) is the best way to start. I personally do this before getting up bc it makes it a bit easier to get up. My comfort activities on my phone include:
1. Watching Tik Toks
This makes me feel better because I follow pretty funny creators and I can always get a bit of a boost from their content. This just helps me boost my spirits, even if the video isn’t funny, the comments never fail to cheer me up!
2. Read Comfort Fics
I usually end up just looking through fluff hashtags on tumblr, currently, I am on a Fred Weasley kick (who happens to be one of my comfort characters) so I could always use some good recs for Fred fluff😊! This just makes me feel butterflies when I read all the cute fluff.
3. Watch Compilation Videos on YouTube
I recently searched up ‘videos that boost serotonin’ and found a few compilations. I normally switch between Tik Tok comps and vine comps.
STEP TWO
After I get up, I make sure to go my morning routine. I keep all my personal products in my room (my makeup, my skin care, my hair brush, etc.). For my morning routine, I need a sink so I gather my stuff (skin care, hair brush, phone, headband, chapstick) and head into my bathroom to get started. I always play music while doing this because music is a huge comfort tool for me. Here are the songs that I listen to during this (i usually end up lip syncing in the mirror so, carry on at your own risk):
This side of paradise by Coyote Theory
Falling by Harry Styles
ultraviolet by prettyboyshav
Dirty Little Secret by The All-American Rejects
Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol
I Like Me Better by Lauv
Cold As You by Taylor Swift
Cough Syrup (Glee Cast Version) cover by Darren Criss
Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard
Check Yes Juliet by We The Kings
Electric Love cover by Paravi Das (highly recommend this cover if you like the original and don’t want to support the original artists)
Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley (or the cover by Hayley Reinhart)
Haunted by Taylor Swift
Anything by Taylor Swift tbh - her songs are huge comforts for me bc I grew up being obsessed with her ngl
you broke me first by Tate McRae
Mercenary by Panic! At The Disco
Anything by 5sos
80s rock/soft-rock/pop
There are so many more, it would take me forever to list them all.
OTHER COMFORT THINGS
Comfort Movies:
Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and The Order of Phoenix (except the last bit for obvious reasons)
10 Things I Hate About You
Legally Blonde
Bring It On (the Original)
Scooby-Doo movies (Cartoon + the two live-actions only bc of the cast) - I am a child, I know, but these bring me such comfort
Pride and Prejudice (The one with Kiara Knightly)
Disney Halloween movies
Dirty Dancing (the ex-dancer in me longs to find someone who I can do the dance with - lift included)
Bonus movies that I just enjoy:
Romeo and Juliet (Leonardo DiCaprio - thats all I’m gonna say)
Princess Bride
White Chicks
Deadpool (bc Ryan Reynolds)
Comfort Shows:
Friends
The old Scooby-Doo Cartoons that I grew up with
Looney Tunes (I told you I’m a child)
Teen Wolf
Jeopardy
Glee
Stranger Things
The Nanny
Gravity Falls
The Simpsons
Brain Games (bc I love psychology)
Wizards of Waverly Place
Comfort Characters
Fred Weasley
George Weasley
Arthur Weasley (such a pure soul)
Steve Harrington (duo)
Dustin Henderson (duo)
Chandler Bing
Phoebe Buffay
Norville Shaggy Rogers
Stiles Stilinski
Elle Woods (couple)
Emmett Richmond (even though he gets barely any screen time) (couple)
Bonus Comfort Show Bc It’s a Youtube Channel But It’s my Only Comfort Youtube Channel
Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher (even though it scared the shit out of me)
So yeah! Those are my comfort things and how I get ready to conquer bad mental health days! Of course, there are days where these are too hard so I end up staying in bed and watching comfort shows/movies or listening to comfort songs.

J2 JIBCon 2017 Panel
*Warning for s13 spoilers
J2 were stuck on a plane (Jared: a car then a plane. Jensen: then a train...*boys laugh* there wasn’t a train) so they weren’t able to watch the finale.
Boys ask what the fans thought of the finale. A fan yells out that episode 22 was awesome. Jared: “Guys, it’s Supernatural, people can come back.”
A fan yells out about Cas. Jensen: Cas? Who?
Jensen: Who all died? Let’s list them. Cas, Crowley, Rowena, Kelly, Ketch. Jared is running out of fingers. Jensen: It was like the Red Wedding! “Little Game of Thrones reference for you guys.”
Jared starts playing with the holes in Jensen’s pants on his knees. Jensen: Don’t touch the hole in my knees! Jared laughs saying that Jensen only saw the back of the pants and didn’t realize the holes were there. Jensen laughs and says he really didn’t know. Just saw black pants in his size and grabbed them without inspecting. “I paid for this...” Only realized when he put them on. Jared keeps playing with them lol.
J2 talk about a Supernatural movie. Jared asks Jensen if he wants to do a movie. Jensen says he would rather do a shortened season. Like a “six episode release.” Jared starts giggling at “release” (quickly turns dirty) hiding his face. Jensen: Leave it alone. Leave it alone. That’s low hanging fruit. Just walk away.
Jared would also rather do a shortened TV season rather than a movie.
Jensen said that one of their produces had an idea where the brothers wake up in a different place than they’re familiar with (AU) and all of the people in the town are old cast members or old characters but “weird” like not who they were on the show. Like the Trickster is the mayor, etc.
Jared says there are times when he wishes they can delve into something for more than one episode. He likes the idea of doing a shortened season like Jensen said because they could have one arc, a specific location or city, etc, that the boys could delve into specifically for a few episodes and being focused on one thing for a long time during the shorter season.
Jensen: And this is why we don’t write the show. Jared laughs.
Jared plays with his mic for a few seconds after it makes a loud noise.
Jensen, repeating a fan’s question: What TV shows would you like to see Sam and Dean thrust into *boys giggle*
The question was what show would they liked the boys to be in if there was another episode like Changing Channels? Jared says The Simpsons, then brings up the crossover Supernatural is doing with Jared: Scooby-Doo. He says they already recorded the dialogue for it (it takes time to draw the animation). Episode 16 of next season is the Scooby-Doo ep. Jared: Jensen, Misha and I...Crowd reacts at hearing MIsha’s name. Jensen realizes, covers his face. Jared blushes after Jensen smiles at him and Jared realizes that he just spoiled that and hides his face for a long time lol.
Jensen quickly says: He’s just an animated character. There’s other characters in the animated ep, too, that don’t exist anymore. Jensen to Jared: BOOM! You’re welcome *slaps Jared’s shoulder*
Jared says it’s the only ep they’ve seen so far so, in all fairness lol.
Jensen joking: It was cool that Jeffrey Dean came back. Jared: Ruby. Jensen: Ruby - “it’s a who’s who.” In sync the boys mime like they’re digging holes with shovels lol.
(Side note and spoilers: For those worried Jared might get in trouble about letting Castiel’s return slip, it doesn’t seem like they were going to try and hide that all hiatus, because during Misha’s panel a fan tweeted: “Misha seems to think we should be focusing on how Cas’ death will affect him when he returns rather than worry he won’t come back” so he was talking about it, too. Source: x).
While a fan asks a question, Jared opens up one of the drinks and sniffs it, then walks it over to Jensen so he can sniff it.
Fan from last year who beat Jensen at rock paper scissors wants to do a rematch. She comes onstage and Jared referees the match like last time. They go 2 out of 3. Jensen wins the first, fan wins the second. For the 3 Jared steps in between so Jensen and the fan can’t see each other. Fan beats Jensen again! Jensen: Dammit! Jared jokes: She was looking at the screen, she totally changed it. Jensen: Next year!
Fan wants to hear story about when J2 were mistaken for a couple years ago at the airport hotel. Jared explains that this was years ago and they were shooting late in Vancouver and they had to get up super early to fly to Los Angeles to do something there. They decided since they had filmed until like 4 or 5am they would just go straight to the airport. Airport wasn’t checking people in yet. Said the Fairmont that is connected to the airport is open so they go to get a room. Since this was back in the days of film and not digital, they had heavy makeup on from set that they were still wearing. They decided to grab one room, asked the person at the desk if they do rooms by the hour. Jared says Supernatural hadn’t aired yet, wasn’t sure if the guy knew him from Gilmore Girls and Jensen from Smallville or if he knew them at all. Said that “we just need a room for a couple hours.” Guy was like, “We don’t do that here.” So they just asked for their smallest room and the guy gave them a look like, “Okay.” J2 finally realized by the guy’s reaction that they thought J2 just wanted one bed and were together. They were like no, we just need a couple hours of sleep, we play brothers on a show, just going to do some acting. Jensen laughs.
Jensen: “I just love the guy at the front desk then immediately picked up the phone and was like, ‘Uh yeah that guy from Smallville and the guy from Gilmore Girls just showed up in like quarter drag and got a room together. Okay, TV Guide, thanks.” Jared cracks up.
Fan gives a shout out to ep 22 loving Sam’s leadership and Dean’s emotional honesty. Jensen: Oh yeah, Dean’s crying again.
Fan asks about the Mockumentary. J2 say they are not classic Hollywood types. They moved their families out of Hollywood and out of California in general.
Jared playing with Jensen’s holy jeans again.
The Mockumentary was them making fun of Hollywood types and stereotypes of themselves. They both love satire. The characters derive from stories they hear about other sets, other actors and some of the antics are pretty outrages so they were making fun of that.
J2 horse around on set and have way too much fun. They would rather do that than walk around on eggshells like some other actors or crew members have to do on “toxic” sets they hear about from other people. Used a bit of that to add to those fake characters in the Mockumentary. Complete opposites of who we are.
How do you keep fighting? Jared says it changes day to day sometimes. You can be inspired by song, rainbow, piece of art, friend, spouse, child parent, etc. Jared says that he is still having a fun time learning that life surprises him everyday. Something makes him sad everyday, something makes him happy everyday, tries to focus on the latter. Mentions that days like today what makes him happy is meeting fans, shaking hands, the hugs and smiles. “How fucking cool.”
Jared says if it wasn’t for Supernatural he would never have meet any of the fans or Jensen (”or this guy”) or any of the other cast. Sometimes when he is tired or sore or jetlagged and worries he’s going to let someone down/disappoint someone, he forgets what a cool blessing his situation is and tries to remind himself of that blessing.
Jensen: There’s also a lot of inspiration in our lies. We have beautiful wives, amazing children, we have great friends, family, awesome extended family, there’s a lot that you can be inspired by. When it comes to the day to day work of it, getting up in the morning early to make your set call and to get there even though you worked all night last night, maybe tired or sick. He and i have been doing this for a pretty long time as most of you know. At this point the network and studio, they’re like we’re gonna keep going if you wanna keep going. Gotten to a point where, we don’t have to do this. When Jensen wakes up in the morning he might feel tired and thinks: I don’t have to do this, I get to do this. He says it’s a sentiment he and Jared both shared. They are very fortunate and humbled by the daily inspiration they get.
J2 discuss how the scripts get worked out. Jensen goes into detail with Jared adding in tidbits. Writer comes up with a general idea, if it gets approved, works out a beginning middle and end of the script. Gets pitched to Andrew and Bob. Write the treatment, submit it to studio and network to get their approval. Then they’ll pepper in through lines or scenes throughout the season. Like, when in a MOTW ep they say something like “Talked to Mom yet?” that’s a through line to keep the season length arc connected. They know it’s a random line that gets thrown in but there’s a reason why the writers include them here and there. Script goes through moderate rewrites throughout the whole process. Then it becomes a production script. Once the script is finally done, the production crew has to piece it together to make it live action. Essentially a puzzle they have to put together. Many departments. Once everything is figured out, they then have 8 days to shoot (after 8 days of prep, then location scouting, building sets, etc).
Jared sneaks Jensen a drink while he’s talking and Jensen thanks him. They take a moment talking about honey crisp apples because of the smell of the drink. Jared made a face after taking a drink. Jensen asks if it’s sour and if he’s okay. Jared says he is blowing fire right now. Whatever alcohol they are drinking is strong lol.
J2 start whispering to each other about a guest star but can’t share because she might come back.
After shooting they take several weeks editing, additional dialogue, sound effects, then a master edit, then send it to the studio, then it goes to affiliates then it goes on air. Very detailed explanation on the entire process.
Lot of people work tireless hours to make the show what it is. Everyone who works on the show don’t get nearly the praise they deserve. “We are just the two faces you see the most of.”
Misha crashes the panel with an accent he calls “German, Russian, Italian.”
Misha asks J2 if after they read the end of the finale script how many hours they held each other and cried. Jensen: I remember reading the end and literally burst into tears of laughter. And I thought, how much fun is season 13 gonna be? I mean, talk about cutting the fat.
Misha comes on stage and hugs Jared and the three start telling a story about how Misha rented a house while they were filming on location for the last three days of s12 because it was a long drive to the location, which was halfway to Whistler. Misha invited J2 to stay with him so they wouldn’t have to make that drive either. Misha: This was a moment of poor decision making.
The shooting schedule was like 3 or 4pm to like 5am the next morning for those three days. Jensen: It was awful. Misha offered for them to stay so they wouldn’t be exhausted doing the 4 hour drive roundtrip. He told them it was like a 3 or 4 bedroom house, but it wasn’t lol. It was actually two bedrooms at the most.
Jared slept on the floor in Misha’s bedroom, Jensen was alone in the other room. Jensen: “[Jared] slept on the floor next to the bed [Misha] slept in. I don’t know what happened, I was in the other room.”
Lots of innuendo and lots of laughter lol.
Misha: How much of this story are we going to tell? Jared: We’re telling it all. Jared realizes that it’s time for J2 to go because Misha is supposed to be starting his solo panel. Jared: We’ll delay a little bit for y’all, “fuck it.”
Jared explains that after shooting until about 5 in the morning they go back to Misha’s place he’s renting and decide to hang out on the patio and drink as a send off to season 12. Jensen: After we realized that there were very little places to sleep in this place, we were like, guess we should just stay up.
Jared: So we stayed up, and then went to bed. Misha stands up and high-fives Jared. Boys are all giggling lol.
Jensen: I do remember at one point being in the other room being awoke by *mimics loud snoring* and he was like “What are they doing in there?! Have they brought in animals now?!”
Jared was a little sick and was snoring so loud that Jensen could hear him from down the hall through a closed door and it woke him up.
Jensen wondered how Misha could possibly be sleeping through that in the same room. Jared: Oh he had been put to the test the night before ;) Jensen: He can sleep through anything. Jared: No he woke up for...*laughter* Jensen: When you nudged him.
Jared referring to the fans: They’re all like, what’s true and what’s not? I wanna believe!
Jared was snoring from down the hall and closed door. Jensen was like
Jared: What’s true and what’s not? Boys are just cracking up lol.
The rented home is all under Misha’s name. Misha: So stupid. They wake up the next day, phone rings. Jared answers. Guy on the phone thinks he’s talking to Virgil, the guy who owns the home. As Jared is pretending to be the home owner because he knows everything is under Misha’s name, Misha catches him and tries to take the phone from him. The phone flies out of both of their hands into a glass and breaks the glass. Misha: There’s the sound of me going, “No!” glass breaking and the phone hanging up.
The phone rings again, Misha runs downstairs to unplug the phone, forgetting he has left his laptop open. Jensen says that Jared runs over to the computer and starts tweeting on Misha’s Twitter. Misha realizes he left his computer vulnerable and sprints back to the room. Misha laughs when he remembers that Jared was trying to tweet Trump from Misha’s Twitter. Misha finally got the phone unplugged and his laptop rescued.
Jensen: Meanwhile, it was the best morning cup of coffee entertainment I’ve ever had. He was just watching them from the table lol.
Misha goes to shower and Jared starts flipping through channels and finds the pay per view. Stops on a show called something like Boys in the Shower 7, or about their butts, he can’t remember. Jensen: That piqued your interest? Jared also assumed the home owner would have blocked renters aka Misha from using the PPV but the guy didn’t so Jared ordered it. Misha says Jared actually subscribed to it under Misha’s name. Misha: it was very graphic bathroom sex. Jared: In all fairness they were offering a deal at the time lol.
J2 left to go back to work before Misha did. Misha spent two hours trying to unsubscribe it. He was unsuccessful because he didn’t have the password Jared had created.
On that note, J2 take off. Misha starts his panel by finishing the story saying that they were all sitting on the couch watching the graphic bathroom sex while J2 were waiting for Clif to pick them up and it took Clif a minute to realize what was on screen lol.

Webcomic Recommendations No One Asked For:
I......... Spent 2 hours putting together a list of my webcomic recommendations, with summaries and reviews, because I was reworking my blog... And really I don’t think anyone ever goes directly on to my blog proper, so it feels kind of foolish to have that there where no one will see it, so I’m actually going to post it as well:
Webcomics are honestly just so tight, and there’s such a vast variety of them that there’s something for everyone, if not a few somethings for everyone! I’m personally all about indie games, but if there’s another indie market that I feel like the internet has created a space for it’s comics. After I started writing this I realized I have a uh… Lot of recommendations. Also, I may be an idiot for not using the author’s own summaries???
Regularly updating:
KILL SIX BILLION DEMONS - A comic about a college girl, Allison, given mystical powers beyond her understanding, and thrust into a celestial world filled with angels and demons, where the lines of good and evil are blurry at best. With the help of friends she meets along the way, she must navigate her new powers, and save her boyfriend from forces that would destroy existence. Kinda dark thematically (with very rare and minor gore), but a great comic if you love action, fantasy, and fantastic art. One of my favorites.
AWFUL HOSPITAL - Another one of my favorites. After her child becomes terribly sick, and doctors tell her that there’s nothing that they can do, a mother wakes up in a mysterious, otherworldly hospital. She must navigate this confusing and sometimes horrifying hospital to save her child and get home, and on the way, she makes many odd friends and unknowable enemies, and learns that her child’s sickness may be part of something larger. This comic is funny, has cool action, a unique format, and lots of great, though ghastly, character designs.
GUNNERKRIGG COURT - A coming of age story about two girls, Antimony and Kat, as they try to find their place in each other’s lives, and the two clashing worlds that surround them, the massive technological complex that is their school and home, Gunnerkrigg Court, and the forest across the river, where magic and fantastic creatures thrive, under the watchful eye of the trickster god Coyote. Another great one for if you like fantasy, but is usually a lot lighter, with a peak of intensity about equal to… Like, Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, I think. I’ve only gotten into this one pretty recently, but it’s good.
PARANATURAL - After his family moves to his dad’s old home town, Max discovers that he has magical powers, and becomes part of the Paranatural Activities club at his school, a group of students and their adviser who all have magical powers, and use them to protect the populace from ghosts, as well as investigate the many magical mysteries of the town. This comic is great, and mostly focuses on action and comedy. The art is a very colorful cartoony style, and the characters are drawn very… fluid, rubbery. The best way to put it is that the artist has really put a lot of effort into making characters consistently as expressive as possible, and that good old Disney/Looney Toons/Tom & Jerry stretchiness makes for very good visual comedy.
HOUSEPETS! - Another one of the earliest webcomics I ever read! Housepets is… largely a comedy comic, following the lives of anthropomorphized pets in a small neighborhood. They go on adventures, and live the fun yet complicated lives of an open society of people with unbelievable amounts of free time. However, sometimes there are bigger drama/adventure arcs, which are really good! A lot of the times amazing art or cool action are what draw me into adventure stories, but I just think the plot of this comic can be really good and surprisingly deep for a humor comic. And it’s still loose enough, and in the newspaper comic style that you can usually jump in very often (not every strip, mind you but in pretty small arcs) without feeling like you’ve missed a ton. Long too, lots to read, recommend.
STAND STILL STAY SILENT - SSSS is a comic that takes place 90 years after the end of the world. A zombie-like virus with strong mystical qualities has wiped out not just human, but much of the world’s mammalian life. In Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, and Denmark), in spite of the virus, society continues to exist, and most people live normal, happy lives. Our comic follows a research team, formed on a hairstring budget to travel into the infected zone, collect information on the virus and state of the fauna there, and, secretly, to collect books to sell back home. A great fantasy adventure drama that updates very often, and has really good art.
CUCUMBER QUEST - In spite of order this is actually the last one I’m writing, and I’m tired, so I’m going to copy the book one summary from Amazon:
What happens when an evil queen gets her hands on an ancient force of destruction? World domination, obviously. The seven kingdoms of Dreamside need a legendary hero. Instead, they’ll have to settle for Cucumber, a nerdy magician who just wants to go to school. As destiny would have it, he and his way more heroic sister, Almond, must now seek the Dream Sword, the only weapon powerful enough to defeat Queen Cordelia’s Nightmare Knight. Can these bunny siblings really save the world in its darkest hour? Sure, why not?
Cucumber Quest is good, the art is colorful and bright, all of the characters are relatable and real, including the villains, there’s cool adventures sequences and plot, and it’s a very fun comic. There’s humor and love and struggle in the comic, and it’s very well done.
GIRL GENIUS - Girl Genius follows Agatha Heterodyne, up and coming mad scientist, on her many adventures to save herself, her friends and the world if it’s along the way. It’s hard, however, competing with an entire world of mad scientists, as well as the Heterodyne legacy, one filled with chaos and bloodshed up until recently. I like Girl Genius a lot. It doesn’t move through the story very fast, but there’s a lot of solid world building, and more importantly, very intriguing sci-fi action and adventure happening inside of that world! I’m also pretty sure they do a radio show or podcast or something with additional Agatha adventures on top of the comic.
SUPERNORMAL STEP - After leading a life as a drifter after the death of her father, Fae is pulled into an alternate world where magic is real. There, she tries to find her place in life, master the magic that the world around her runs on, and get home to plain old earth in one piece. Lots of cool action, every character has really got their own style of magic. I can honestly tell you that it’s good, but I read it over such a long period of time that it’s got a pretty vague impression in my head.
ATOMIC ROBO - Robo is a skilled an dedicated scientist. He’s also an atomic robot built and raised by Nikola Tesla. Atomic Robo follows the titular character on the many adventures of his life, from WWII to the present. As the head of Tesladyne Industries, Robo is dedicated to researching the outlandish, the weird, the impossible! And when the world calls on him, he and his Action Scientists defend it from giant monsters, cosmic anomalies, and mad science. Atomic Robo is great if you love action, robots, monsters, humor, and velociraptors duel-wielding uzis. Highly recommended.
DUMBING OF AGE - As the title would imply, Dumbing Of Age is a pretty standard coming of age comedy! Starring a wide cast of likable and complex character, DoA follows a group of college freshmen as they learn more about themselves, and grow beyond the bubbles that they were raised in. I think the underpinnings of the comic are pretty strongly on humor, but there’s a lot of drama, and conversations about meaningful things too. There are lots of varying depictions of drama, depression, anxiety, and the ways people deal with pressure, and fear. But there’s also a lot of love and friendliness. It’s a good comic, and probably the only solid slice-of-life on my list.
MANLY GUYS DOING MANLY THINGS - This comic follows The Commander, a bio-engineered super soldier sent back in time to run a temp agency. This particular temp agency specializes in reintroducing particularly brutish video game, comic, and movie protagonists back into normal polite society. Duke Nukem isn’t much of a man for customer service, however. Later on the comic drifts more toward Commander’s personal life. (So slice of life, but with a buff, and actually surprisingly sensitive and forward thinking, super commando from the future.) Has been in a bit of a slump in terms of updates recently, but they still happen.
GRRL POWER - Sidney, a slightly hyper nerd who works at a comic shop, stumbles upon an artifact that gives her a variety of superpowers. After being exposed, she becomes a member of the government’s brand new super hero organization. This comic is a lot of fun, with some cool superpowers and super fights. Lots of humor, very consistently, in any given scene. Sadly, it is a bit fan service-y, though in the grand scale of things it’s not the worst offender (though definitely the worst you’ll see on this list).
SWORD INTERVAL - This is a pretty new one for me, but it’s great. At some indeterminate point in the past (potentially as far back as the civil war, if not farther), the earth became exposed to monsters and magic in ways that it wasn’t before. Humanity still exists and survives, but plagued by supernatural forces. Our main character is Fall, a very new monster hunter, who after years in witness protection, has decided to track down and kill the Hierophant, the powerful monster that killed her parents. Sword interval does a lot of really cool fantasy stuff, with new takes on classic monsters, and magic and monsters in settings that we don’t often see them in, out in the open in present day. It’s something I wish we could see more. Good action and art, particularly character design.
BACK - Abigail is back. From the dead? From a very long sleep in a box underground? She doesn’t know either. She doesn’t know a lot of things. What she does know is that she’s got two guns, is nearly indestructible, and is prophesied to go north to the capital and end the world. With the help of the young cleric Michael, who supplements her absolute lack of all knowledge and common sense, Abigail fights her way through the kingdom, and past the kings many superpowered deputies. Back is cool, back is funny, and sometimes has some good action. I wouldn’t consider it one of my favorites, but it’s a comic I started and I’ve kept up with, so that’s saying something.
MARE INTERNUM - Not very long yet, and I only recently read it, but Mare Internum is really good. I don’t want to spoil it too much, honestly, especially because it’s so short, but it’s a sci-fi adventure comic about being trapped, underground, on Mars, and finding life there. The art is great, the story so far is well written, and the dialogue is good. I really don’t want to spoil it, but there are some great concepts in it and you should read it.
OPHIUCHUS - A very new comic about an ancient stone guardian who is whisked away to another, far off world. Here, he is employed to help two of this world’s denizens defeat the blight that has corrupted and destroyed their once almost utopian world. The art for this is really good. The comic is not currently long enough to comment on much else, but it seems interesting, sci-fi with a touch of fantasy.
Slowly Updating:
AVA’S DEMON - Ava’s Demon is about a girl, Ava who has spent her entire young life haunted by a ghost that torments her, before finally making a deal. The ghost, Wrathia, will help her become a normal girl, with friends and a normal life, but first, Ava must track down the ghosts of Wrathia’s most powerful allies, and help her dissolve the massive interplanetary empire that is TITAN. Ava’s Demon is amazing. The story is good, but I think the comic’s greatest strength is absolutely stunning and polished art. Strong recommendation.
THE PROPERTY OF HATE - RGB is a self-described monster, a sharp dressed man with a TV for a head. However, he’s looking for a hero to guide on a quest. RGB whisks our young protagonist, the Hero, to a world that exists beside our own a world completely fueled and inhabited by our creativity, our stories. RGB protects the Hero from these dangers, guiding her on a mission unknown, through a world that, although mystical, seems to have lost its hope.
HE IS A GOOD BOY - Slow but large updates. This comic follows the life a sentient acorn, Crange, after the death of his parent (a tree) to a lumberjack. Crange is kind of a bit of a loser, and stumbles around his world of sentient rocks and bugs getting into all sorts of trouble and hijinks. These hijinks almost always result in someone’s death, which Crange is impressively unphased by. HIAGB is fantastic, in my opinion. The art is great, the humor is great, especially the visual comedy, and the story is good. However, it gets real dark, and gory. But if you’re fine with that, it IS a (dark) comedy comic, and a good one.
THE LAST HALLOWEEN - One Halloween, the darkness opens up, and monsters pour out from the seams between our world and theirs. Approximately 7 billion monsters, in fact. Mona, a young girl and horror fanatic finds herself thrown into a world of chaos and horror, on the run from her own monster, and forced to look for a way to save the world, with the help of ghosts, zombies, vampires, and even monsters themselves. In spite of the fact that this comic can be VERY dark, I think one of its big hooks is humor and likable characters, on top of great art and plot. I really like it. This comic maybeshouldn’t be on the slow update list, but the artist is just picking up speed after a long hiatus, so…
ROMANTICALLY APOCALYPTIC - The apocalypse happened, and Charles Snippy missed it. Humanity was wiped out in a war against it’s own, ever-present AI, and Charles Snippy, a scientist/tour guide without the implants made it out alive, only to wander alone this is until he meets Zee Captain, an ever positive, gender question mark, maniac who wanders the wasteland with their insane assistant Pilot. Snippy, Captain and Pilot wander the wasteland, facing off against monsters, raiders, and the laws of physics in a mind warping and illogical adventure.
On Hiatus:
DERELICT - Like a surprisingly large number of comics on this list, in Derelict, the world has ended. A strange Miasma travels the world, killing billions, and bringing with it gargoyle-like monsters who fear the daylight. However, the world goes on, in a small, broken way, and our story follows a scavenger in this new world.
HELVETICA - So, you die, and then what? Well, life goes on. This is what Helvetica learns, after he dies and reemerges into an afterlife that seems shockingly similar to the world of the living, with work, pressure, responsibility, danger, and just plain old boring life. Except everyone is a skeleton. Helvetica is very resistant to accept this new life in death. This one is pretty short so far, and hasn’t updated in a while, but it’s good.
VIBE - Hasn’t update in a year and a half, but what’s there is good (Honestly, it’s super sad it hasn’t update, I like it a lot). Vibe follows Baron, a young shaman, a spiritual master who is able to expel negative emotions (bad vibes) from the human body. Only those emotions then become monsters, who a shaman must fight to complete the process! With the help of his Loa (they’re like familiars), he navigates life as a teenager, and his increasingly complex and dangerous life as a shaman. I really like this comic. There’s a lot of very cool and dynamic action, and the artist makes great use of a ton of bright colors.
THE ABOMINABLE CHARLES CHRISTOPHER - This one hasn’t updated in about a year, but what’s there right now is good. Charles Christopher is a Sasquatch, living in the woods on the edge of society. Though he himself is fairly soft, and simple, the wilderness around him is full of anthropomorphized animals who go about shockingly human social and professional lives. The comic follows Charles Christopher as he interacts with the world of these animals, and becomes tangled in a vast spiritual quest.
POWER NAP - Hard to know exactly where to put this one. It’s currently VERY slow updating. Power Nap takes place in a world where the majority of mankind is reliant on a drug that allows them to live 24/7 without sleep. However, there are those who are allergic to the medicine, who live their lives out of sync with their peers, protected by the government, but effectively second class citizens. However, in a sleepless world, over-saturated by virtual reality, the human subconscious has found ways to seep into reality.
THE FANCY ADVENTURES OF JACK CANNON - I want to start this out by saying this comic is probably dead, without a 100% resolution. However, it’s currently 492 pages, and a LOT of the storyline covered in that span was resolved. Such that, if they’d wanted to, I could’ve seen the author wrapping it up. I digress. Jack Cannon is about a kid moving to a new school, where he finds the bullies are able to hack reality. Somehow immune to hacks, Jack fights the bullies, and in doing so, puts himself on the stage of a worldwide battle against hackers. Lots of really cool action in this, one of the first few webcomics I read.
Complete:
HOMESTUCK - If you’re here, you are probably at least aware of Homestuck. It’s about a bunch of goofy awkward teen friends who get sucked into a cosmic (video) game, with the fate of the universe at stake, but you know, they’ve still got that teen angst. Time travel is involved. It’s a very long, fun, and dramatic comic which is heavily influenced by RPGs and point and click adventures.
THE ADVENTURES OF DR. MCNINJA - The pressures of being a doctor AND ninja are immense, but on either front, you can trust that Dr. McNinja is the man for the job. Born into an Irish ninja family, Dr. McNinja longs for a life where he can do medicine in peace, but finds himself constantly pulled into a string of action packed adventures, fighting giant monsters, bandits riding velociraptors, and dueling radical interdimensional kings. This one if fairly long, a bit over 1800 pages, but it’s really good and well done. Again, there is a lot of both action and humor (I’m big on that), with some surprisingly meaningful and well-done story arcs in spite of how silly the premise is.
REMIND - This one is about a girl who lives in a lighthouse on the edge of a town whose main draw is the “Lizard Man” legend that her own father made up. However, after her cat one day starts walking on two legs and talking, claiming to be one of many said lizard men, they both go on a journey to discover the truth. This one was OK. The story and sci-fi elements are both alright bot not great. But it’s not super long, so if you have the time, maybe read it.

StrangerVille | Chapter 1
“It looks like something straight out of a horror movie,” she said. “It’s really creepy and cliche.”
The neon sign above the bar flickered and hummed. Initials of the unremarkable sims of the past were sketched alongside freshly carved obscenities and crude drawings, on bathroom walls and tabletops. Outside, the full moon shone brightly, overpowering the tiny stars that would have dotted the night sky. Quiet, dusty streets were bathed in a blue glow. A stray tumbleweed bounced carelessly along to an undetermined destination.
His mother was right about the desert town; StrangerVille was a cliched town pulled right out of a stereotypical horror movie. It was small. It was quiet. It was unsuspecting and unremarkable, just as he was. Perhaps that’s why he was drawn to it and why he moved there.
What did he have going for him? He was just as plain and unsuspecting as the town. He had no skills, no outstanding awards. In school, he was a straight C student and never bothered to waste his time, money, and energy on college. Though he wasn’t unattractive, women weren’t exactly throwing themselves at him. His hair and eyes were brown and ordinary. He was fairly fit, but not particularly active or muscular. If he kept up his evenings visiting the local bar, he would surely develop a beer gut. But he was single and not particularly interested in a relationship, either. Though, sex would have been nice. It had been some time since he had had sex.
He sighed to himself. He propped an elbow against the bartop and rested his chin in the palm of his hand as he stared into his beer bottle. He was at a crossroads in his life, that much was clear. He didn’t seem to particularly fit in anywhere. He had no dreams, no aspirations. He didn’t even have a job yet in town, and it didn’t seem likely the town would be able to offer him much, anyway. What was he thinking, moving here?
“Go to college,” his father had urged him. “At least for a year. Dabble in some courses. Find something you like.”
It was good advice. He should have taken it. He should have given himself a chance. He should have tried a little harder to do something with his life, or make something of himself. But he didn’t. And now, he was alone at a bar in a dusty, nobody town where he was surely doomed to die alone, unremarkable, and leaving not a single mark on the world.
It wasn’t that he wanted to be something more. He didn’t care to be a famous celebrity. He didn’t care to be a leader of a new world. He didn’t want to make a difference in the community. He didn’t care about discovering new resources, or inventing a new product, or in any way changing the world for the better, or even for the worse. He wanted none of that. But even the most ordinary, unremarkable of people seemed to find their niche in life. They had something to do, something to be proud of, something that made them who they were. And he couldn’t help the wave of depression that washed over him, realizing that he didn’t even have that. He had no purpose, no reason to get out of bed in the morning. He quite literally had nothing.
He quickly finished off his beer. He hadn’t woken up that morning expecting to feel so down. Though, he didn’t wake up feeling much of anything, really. But now that the mundane routine of his day was over with - the cooking, the cleaning, the personal hygiene, the paying of bills, the looking for jobs - he was left with nothing more than his thoughts. And that sent a chill up his spine.
He looked up as the bartender wordlessly took his empty bottle, raising a brow in a silent question that Jayson understood. He nodded, and the bartender quickly brought him another drink. He took it with a nod of thanks, then turned on his barstool to people watch.
The bar was lively, proving to be a popular place among the locals. He took a moment to scan them, his eyes pausing on each group. There was a clustering of military personnel of some sort at one large table. Some sat while others stood along the wall, chatting and laughing, though there seemed to be an unnatural, uneasy tenseness to their otherwise cheerful behavior. Jayson, however, paid them no mind as he continued to inspect the one room bar.
He recognized a few of the townies, many of whom resided in the trailer park near his own home. Along with the townies were the usual conspiracy theorists. He could usually spot them from a mile away. He didn’t know much about StrangerVille, but he did know that it was ripe with rumors thanks to the abandoned secret lab to the north of the town, and that attracted conspiracy theorists from all over the world.
He turned his attention to the woman that took the seat at the bar beside him and offered her a smile as he turned back to his beer. To his surprise, however, she seemed to take his action of simply returning to his beer as an invitation to converse.
“Jeez, this place is straight out of a horror movie,” she said.
Jayson glanced at her, hesitant. “That’s what my mom used to say.” It was all he planned to contribute to the conversation, but she was insistent on continuing.
“My weird little sister dragged me out here,” she said as she took her drink from the bartender. “She thinks she can break into that abandoned lab in town.”
“She wouldn’t be the first to try,” Jayson said politely, though he was still disinterested in conversing. No, he would much rather wallow in his own self-pity tonight. But it seemed that he would not find such peace and quiet.
“That’s what I told her,” the woman continued. “I’m sure that place is guarded, locked, and boarded up.” She shook her head and paused to drink. “Teenagers, right?” She sighed and sat back to lean against the bar. She watched as her sister excitedly conversed with the men and women Jayson recognized to be fellow conspiracy theorists. “They all think they’re invincible. That they can change the world.”
“I guess so.”
“Anyway,” she said, spinning back around. She offered him a smile. “You live here?”
Jayson nodded.
“You guys must get sick of all these tourists, then, huh?”
He shrugged. “I don’t think I’m allowed to be, really,” he said. “I only just moved here myself.”
“Ah.” She drank. “What made you want to move here?”
“I don’t know,” he said, perking up slightly. He paused thoughtfully, drinking from his beer. “It seemed ordinary and plain like me.”
“Maybe,” she started. “You know, unless there really is some deep, dark secret here.”
“Maybe,” Jayson admitted. “But I didn’t exactly know about that when I moved.”
She nodded. “You must have moved from under a rock.”
Jayson glanced at her. She was grinning at him, her smile contagious. He couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips. It was the first time he really got a good look at her, and even in the dim, bar lighting, he could tell she was beautiful. Her skin was darker than the teenage sister that was bouncing around the bar, digging for information from the locals.
“So, where was that rock located?” she asked, bringing him out of his thoughts.
He pulled his gaze away. “Willow Creek.”
She nodded. “We’re from Windenburg.” She extended her hand. “I’m Siobhan, by the way.”
Jayson glanced at her, then took her hand in a single shake. “Jayson.”
Morgan made her way to the bar, squeezing herself between her sister and Jayson. She leaned against it and waved the bartender down.
“Whisky! Neat!”
The bartender raised a brow at her. “What are you, twelve?”
He turned his back on her, but Morgan shouted to him. “Try sixteen!” She sighed, then leaned against the counter and proceeded to look Jayson up and down. Her mouth opened in a grin, and she turned to Siobhan.
“So, you picked up a conspiracy theorist, huh?”
“I’m not a conspiracy theorist,” Jayson said quickly. He glanced at Siobhan, then added, “And no one’s picking anyone up.”
Morgan snorted and turned her attention back to him. “Why not? You’re attractive. My sister’s attractive. Get that booty.”
Jayson raised a brow and smirked. “I’m attractive?”
“You’re a child,” Siobhan said. “Don’t you have some StrangerVille groupies to annoy?”
“Quiet,” Morgan said, waving her sister off. Then, to Jayson, she said, “Look at her. She’s hot, right?”
“I do not objectify -”
“Yeah, yeah. Simmer down there. We get it. The question remains: hot or not?”
“Why do you have to be so weird?” Siobhan said, pushing Morgan away from them.
“Why haven’t you given him your number yet?”
“I’m not into conspiracy theorists like you are.”
“Not a conspiracy theorist,” Jayson said again, louder this time to talk over the bickering sisters. “Just trying to have a drink.”
Morgan rolled her eyes. “Right, sorry. Depressive alcoholic. That’s much better.”
“I’m not -” But Jayson paused, then sighed.
“Look, you made him sad,” Morgan said to her sister. She gestured obviously to Jayson.
“You know,” Siobhan started, “If I was trying to pick him up, you’re ruining that for me.”
“You’re trying to pick me up?”
Siobhan waved him off. “Please.”
“I thought I was attractive.”
“So, just because we’re attractive, we gotta fuck?”
“Ooh,” Morgan teased. “Siobhan thinks you’re hot.”
“I know,” Jayson said. “She’s been trying to take my pants off all night.”
“Thirsty!”
“Okay,” Siobhan said, pushing her sister away once more. “I’m done playing your annoying teenager games. Go discover some more mysteries, Scooby-doo.”
“That’s highly offensive to the Scooby-doo community,” Morgan said. “However, I will let it slide, because I’m pretty sure I definitely saw the Mystery Machine outside.”
“Just don’t get into strange vans,” Siobhan called after Morgan as her sister skipped out of the bar. “And call me!”
“Wow.” Jayson muttered.
“The term we use is quirky,” she said with an apologetic grin. “I’m sorry. I usually just go with whatever crazy train she’s on.”
“That’s a lot of crazy,” Jayson said. “Look. I know we said we were in it for the long run, but I don’t know if I can handle that kinda crazy.”
Siobhan smiled and sighed playfully. “And I told my parents that you were the one.”
“I have that effect on people.”
Siobhan finished her drink and stood. “I should make sure she doesn’t get her ass thrown in jail or something. My apologies for interrupting your night.”
“Ah,” Jayson started. “It wasn’t so intrusive.”
Siobhan smiled. “Well. Maybe I’ll see you around. We’re here for a couple days, anyway.”
“Yeah, maybe.”
“If we stumble across anything interesting, I’ll let you know. I’m sure you’ll want to update all your conspiracy theorist friends.”
“Not a conspiracy theorist,” he said one last time.
Siobhan’s smile grew and her eyes closed. She waved at him before slipping outside to find her sister.

Doppelganger (1993)
Tumblr media
Date watched:  1 December 2018
Holy. Fucking.  Shit.  Is this the greatest movie of all time?!
Narrator:  It isn't.
How do I even begin to describe what this movie is?  It's a horror movie, but it has elements of a psychological thriller, plus there are ghosts, plus there is a reveal, plus there's sex – it has EVERYTHING.
Tumblr media
It is B-movie – actually, more like C-movie – greatness, the likes of which are unparalleled.
Now I will try to unravel the extremely bizarre and convoluted plot of this movie.
We start out in New York with a young Drew Barrymore walking down the street in a headscarf and glasses.  Cut to Drew Barrymore being attacked/raped/consensually having sex (I'm still real unclear on what was going on there) and orgasming with an old dude.  Then cut to Drew Barrymore's mother on the phone talking about how Drew Barrymore is a pain in the arse and needs to be taken care of, then suddenly Drew Barrymore is there, and she kills her mother! Or stepmother? Still unclear.
Then we're in sunny California, where a young, no-head-scarf Drew Barrymore is on an apartment hunt.  She turns up at George Newbern's place, because he's an out of work writer (of course) searching for a roommate.  There's only one bedroom but he sleeps on the couch, so she may as well have the bedroom! Boom.  Roommates.
Tumblr media
And he's like, damn, this girl is hot, but I’m a kind of a dorky sort of a dude and I'm respectful and such, so I won't be sexually harassing her.  A nice change of pace.
He has this lady friend with a stunning perm – STUNNING – who is a talk-a-mile-a-minute, smokes-a-lot gal, who thinks it's weird that Drew Barrymore is living with him (why? She's in love with him, of course, but she's not one of those women who will simply take a chance on love now is she?).
So Lady Perm and George Newbern are having coffee when all of a sudden they see Drew Barrymore standing across the street staring at them.  George Newbern is like, oh, it's Holly, hey Holly, come over, let's have a coffee, this is my friend, hi, hello, hi – but Drew just stares at them with murderous intent on her face before simply vanishing into thin air.
Newbern is like wtf?  He asks Drew Barrymore about it when he gets home and she's like, "Oh no, she's back," and we're like, "Who?  Who's back?!" and she's like, "My doppelganger," and we're like… huh.  Cool cool cool.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Drew seduces Newbern and they bang on the kitchen floor and then in her bed, but when they wake up in the morning and Newbern is like, "Sup, baby," she's like WTF WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN HERE I DID NOT CONSENT TO THIS.
And he's like, "Well I remember you consenting last night," but she's mad and she throws him out.
And I'm like huh.
Then we find out that doppelgangers are mythical ghost creatures that can manifest into a physical form (or something like that), and then someone (I can't remember who) says that she actually has a split personality and I was like but WHAT ABOUT THE GHOST THING?
Anyway, for some reason and despite all this insanity he starts to believe her, and fall in love with her, despite the constant freak-outs and nosebleeds, and he even believes that she does have an IRL doppelganger.  Then the doppelganger kills her brother (who is in a mental institution) and they lock her up, believing that she did it but Newbern is like, "She has a doppelganger!"  Quite rightly, the cops do not believe him.
Tumblr media
Then one day he follows the doppelganger around town for a bit, and then he's almost murdered by a dude with a scar (who has something to do with the plot of this movie but honestly, I don't remember what), and then Madam-Perms-a-Lot takes Drew Barrymore and Newbern in for safekeeping, but Drew Barrymore is like, "No. This ends tonight."
So the trio go to this big old house (which, I swear to god, looks like the exact same house from the movie The Crush, though I could be wrong) which is apparently her family home, or something (look a lot was happening, there were split personalities and ghosts, doppelgangers, dudes with scars on their faces, the FBI, sex scenes, perms – this movie is jampacked), and she goes inside where her doppelganger brains her over the head and lays her down on a conveniently located couch.
And you're like, huh, because isn't it a ghost?
Newbern is like, I have to save her, and Queen of the Perms is like, "I like love you and stuff," but he's already in full on hero mode and dashing to save her life.  Once he gets inside he finds the doppelganger, and Drew Barrymore on the couch, so he and the doppelganger have a "fight" (kind of), and then I was like, oh my god.
Oh. My.  God.  IT'S HAPPENING.
SCOOBY DOO ENDING.
Tumblr media
Because sure enough, sure fucking enough, he rips the mask off of the doppleganger and it's SOME DUDE who I'm SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHO HE IS BUT I DIDN'T.
And he would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you pesky kids!
Turns out this dude has been impersonating lots of people with scary, realistic masks, all with the intention of having Drew Barrymore all to himself?  A noble cause, but also, gross.
And then I was thinking, wait a second.  When Newbern and Drew Barrymore banged, he was banging this dude?
But no. No.
Drew Barrymore DOES have a split personality, and when they banged for the first time and she didn't remember, it's because the other personality was in control.  And I was like, that makes sense because I feel like George Newbern would've noticed if the hot girl he was banging was wearing a mask, had no boobs and a penis. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt there and say that he definitely would've noticed.
Tumblr media
BUT THEN, IT GETS BETTER.
How does it get better, you're asking? How?  After the doppelgangers and the sex and the split personalities and the very underwhelming violence and the PERM, how can it possibly get better from here? HOW?
Well. In one of the most spectacular movie scenes of all time, and yes, it's a big call but I'm making it, Drew Barrymore – who is still lying on the couch at this point, just watching the action, not really doing anything, not tied up, just lying there watching – starts to convulse, and then she's covered in goo, and then she starts to melt (both dudes are just staring at her at this point like wtf is going on), and then she starts to split into two bodies, and then suddenly there's this:
Tumblr media
The two personalities split into terrifying, skeletal, blood monsters because… it's a horror movie now?!
And then the blood monster kills the bad dude!
And then the monsters become one again!
And George Newbern just watches this all happen!
And I'm like cool coolcoolcoolcoolcool
Then Drew Barrymore is whole again with no recollection of anything that happened! And George Newbern is like, guess I've got that movie script now, heh heh heh.
The end.
Tumblr media
Look, I knew when I embarked on this endeavour to watch a bunch of movies I've never seen or heard of before it was going to take me down some dark paths, and there have been some rotten stinkers in the mix, but this one is the most batshit, weird, not scary, convoluted, kinda-sexy-but-not-really, early 90s pretend horror movie that has ever existed.  And I'm not going to sit here and say that I didn't enjoy it – I especially enjoyed the part where she split into two monsters – but I'm also not going to pretend like it wasn't the worst, because it kinda is.
But then, I always like the shit ones the best, so… five stars.
