I think the whole "blacklisting" discourse around Louis would be much healthier and likely closer to the truth if people could understand that while they are (sometimes) seeing a real disparity in promo and support between Louis and other artists, a lot of that is more down to a disparity in resources than Louis being blacklisted. Like, so much of the promo that Niall was getting that people were complaining Louis didn't get is down to Capitol/UMG putting a lot more money into Niall's promo. And that's a much more nuanced conversation, because while, sure, some of that discrepancy probably has its roots in the way that Syco/Sony wasn't willing to put resources into Walls, it's a fair bet that Louis was intentional about his deal with BMG and made tradeoffs around support vs independence (both in structuring that deal and in choosing BMG to work with). I think people want to imagine that we live in a world where that tradeoff doesn't exist, and when it does, they want to chalk it up to simple blacklisting rather than complicated industry, power and funding dynamics.

Totally agree with everything you say anon. There absolutely are tradeoffs. Artists have a certain amount invested in them, based on complicated industry, aesthetic, and power dynamics.

To me, the most interesting question is - how are resources being used? Particularly what can the choices about resource use tell us about goals and then from there - how well do resources seem to be being deployed to match the goals.

What infuriates me about a lot of fandom discussions of promos is that there's no curiosity. Instead it's assumed that the goals are 'things that make fans feel validated and content fans enjoy and think is respected is good and that's all there is to promo. And I find it boring as well.

So I totally agree with everything you say - and think it could be a really useful starting point for conversations. But in general those aren't the conversations that happen in fandom - so I often only hvae these conversations when I step sideways into them.

Okay so maybe I’m just way behind the fandom because I’m watching the anime and I’m not way ahead in the manga, and maybe I’m just used to the Danny Phantom Phandom where everything is angst all the time, but where are all the Tadano angst fics?

Y’all, this precious baby was kidnapped, locked in a room covered in a terrifying collage of photos of his friend and then locked into a tiny closet while he listened to said friends coming over to visit his kidnapper who just asked him where she should dispose of his body.

But before they even arrived. This kid sat in this room ALL DAY. Unable to move an inch. The only thing to keep him company being the thousands of eyes from photos covering every surface of wall and ceiling and a teenage girl’s alarm clock.

And then! She apologizes the next day about it? But her apology is NOT “I’m sorry for kidnapping and threatening to kill you, that was wrong” but instead “I should’ve gotten rid of you sooner”.

It doesn’t really matter that she was muttering under her breath and he didn’t hear the words she said. It was fucking obvious to everyone involved that her apology to Tadano was the furthest thing from sincere.

And then they all just…move on from that like nothing happened? Nobody mentions it again? This kid isn’t having panic attacks from the continued threats coming from this girl? She forces her way into his house later on when Komi comes to visit. This isn’t something that would be terrifying and triggering?

Idk man, I guess the fandom is more happy go lucky and feel good. Which is absolutely not a bad thing. I hope this doesn’t come off as a complaint, I just find it weird that there’s not a lot of fan content on FFN and AO3 about that episode.

I do find it annoying from a narrative perspective as well though. Like Yamai suffers zero (0) consequences for doing this. And how is Tadano just okay? No he would not just be fine the next day.
