Placenames in the vicinity of Arnarstapi and nearby Hellnar village are inspired by Bárðar saga Snæfellsáss, an Icelandic saga relating the story of Bárður, a half human and half ogre. Want to take a drive into the sunset? This dirt road is by Skálar on Langanes located in Northeast Iceland. Back in 1920-1930 up to 120 people lived there mainly living off fishing. Skálar is very isolated and it took up to three days to get to nearest village Þórshöfn. Living conditions were quite tough, no harbour for the fishing boats so all the catch and fishing gear need to be carried to and from the boats, often during heavy surf. After 1930 people started moving away and by 1945 all had left. One family moved back and lived at Skálar until 1954. Hoy estuve buscando cascadas y de las tres visité, Gullfoss fue la que robó mi aliento. El agua en el río Hvítá viaja desde el glaciar Langjökull, antes de caer en cascada 32 metros (105 pies) por las dos etapas de Gullfoss en una exhibición dramática del poder bruto de la naturaleza. Las paredes del cañón a ambos lados de la cascada alcanzan alturas de hasta 70 metros (230 pies), descendiendo al gran cañón Gullfossgjúfur. I was chasing waterfalls today and of the three ones that I visited, Gullfoss was the most spectacular one. The canyon walls on both sides of the waterfall reach heights of up to 70 metres (230 feet), descending into the great Gullfossgjúfur canyon.
