Something for #throwbackthursday: On this day 5 years ago, @agneskristine and I joined the Banawor trek in Banaue, Ifugao's Rice Terraces, organized by @moncorpuz. It was a grueling trek, but the sights and the people we were walking with, as well as those we met along the way, made it worthwhile. Banaue, Ifugao. It was my first time to witness a big gathering of Igorots to celebrate their Imbayah Festival in 2016. ⁣ ⁣ At daylight, the town was bustling with excitement for the different events. We were there for 2 things: wooden scooter race and the ritual dances. The float parade (tricycle version) was a bonus to us. ⁣ ⁣ I love all the cultural dances I witnessed, the beauty of their tradition and how they were able to preserve it. We didn't get a good seat at the sports complex (see awkward talikodgenic photos) and I was annoyed at the group of foreign tourists who got the front row seats but they left in the middle of the program.⁣ ⁣ Those were happy times. I pray that all the elderly Igorots were safe and in good health as there are the living legends of their culture.⁣ ⁣ #ethnic #ethnicdance #Ifugao #Igorot #Banaue #Imbayah2016 #travel #traveltheworld #travelscape #travelgram #instatravel #travelph #travelpinas #redmaletatravels #tourismPH #redmaletatravels (at Banaue, Ifugao Province) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_FcbIiglYi/?igshid=1lryokyz7slxm

IMBAYAH FESTIVAL
The Imbayah festival is part of the Ifugaos' cultural pride.Celebrated every 3 years in Banaue, Ifugao, since 1979, it is based on an old ritual celebrating the ascendancy of a commoner and his family to the ranks of Kadangyans or the Banaue elite. The word imbayah itself comes from the Ifugao word bayah, or rice wine, which signifies nobility and high stature in the community.

#unique #festival The Ifugaos, an ethnic group who inhabit the southeastern part of the Cordillera region in the Philippines, are known for their ingenuity and exceptional wood-carving skills. Using their craftsmanship and inventiveness, these tribesmen can create badass bicycles using only wood and some scraps of used rubber tires. The makeshift wooden bikes are made fiercer by the intricate carvings of animals, mythical creatures and even human faces. Members of this peaceful Cordilleran tribe showcase their creations via a special race during the Ifugao’s Imbayah Festival, a celebration of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest in Banaue. Held every three years, the event draws visitors from all over the Philippines and beyond who come to see a unique race featuring the wooden bikes. Wearing nothing but their ethnic attire called bahag, the Ifugao men ride their homemade scooters along the zigzagging roads of a steep slope from the mountains to the town of Banaue below. The Ifugao daredevils hurtle down the four-and-a-half mile course at a speed of up to 50 miles per hour. #philippines (at Dimapur) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz-_t3gnZNW/?igshid=6gw4u0kkn7ni

http://ift.tt/QpP2i4 Along the picturesque rice terraces of Banaue, Philippines, a unique racing subculture combines daredevil bravery with incredible artistry. Every April during the town’s Imbayah Festival, residents gather to watch a race unlike any other. Flying down the region’s steep hills at speeds that reach 30 mph, local riders challenge each other with meticulously carved, handcrafted wooden scooters. These beautifully crafted bikes don’t have brakes, so riders must rely on their skill to avoid crashing. Join three-time champion Robert Duyugen for the ride of a lifetime on a one-of-a-kind scooter.

Ifugao riders race down the mountains of Banaue using wooden scooters carved by the local artisans. Historically, the scooters were used to transport firewood and other goods from higher places. The race is held during the Imbayah Festival whick takes place every three years. Banaue Philippines. I was lucky to try it myself, walang sinabi yung motor ko (sorry na scarlet) #travel #banauericeterraces #imbayahfestival #philippines (at Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras)

Living the moment. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In April 2016, we witnessed Imbayah Festival's wooden scooter racing event few minutes after arriving in Banaue--just like the Bear Brand Adult Plus TVC. Difference is that they just took a top shot with the terraces as the background and Igorots dressed in full regalia cheered on the sidelines. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Our version is more realistic. It happened at the curve en route to the town center with cheering locals dressed in normal clothes on the sidelines.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The wooden scooter race is part of the Imbayah Festival. This is a downhill 7-kilometer course that starts from the Rice Terraces View Point to the town proper.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The Imbayah Festival happens every last week of April. Looking forward to attend this festival or Punnuk soon. ⁣ PS: say hi to the election banners in the background. They say they are supporting Binay during that time.⁣ ⁣⁣ #cultureshock #culture #Imbayah2016 #ImbayahFestival #Banaue #Ifugao #Igorot #travel #travelscape #traveltheworld #travelph #travelscape #instatravel #natives #igersCEBU #Igorot #travelgram #igersPH #bukidlife #scooter #downhill (at Banaue, Ifugao Province) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_CJa92AMIS/?igshid=ql5r9zc8uvcw
