MarInk Day 5: Map

Maybe not very recognizable to my English-speaking audience but this is actually fanart of the German book series Internat der Bösen Tiere, book one in particular. There's a scene where the main character (Noël) is sent on a test by following a map and hidden code on an island. During this he's helped by Number Eight, his talking rat friend. I can't draw humans so sadly no sign of Nöel here, but let's just assume we're looking through his POV here.

Not xenofiction but this was a really nice book to read with a lot of animal characters, honestly more animal than human characters.

What I love the most though is that this book really loves positively representing traditionally maligned species. Scorpions, sharks, snakes, tarantulas, and rats are all portrayed as the good guys and they're also really enjoyable characters as well who don't directly fall into the stereotypes you often see of these species in media (e.g. being gross or sneaky or dangerous).

My main gripe with the book is that there's no real signs of a bigger plot (this is book 1 in a continous series) aside from some offhand mentions. It's mostly just Noël going through some tests to see if he can get into the boarding school.

But still it's a good book and it's such a breath of fresh air when it comes to underrated animal representation.
