Meet David Strachan: born intersex, David was put on hormone replacement therapy to make him appear more "male" - but like many intersex babies and children, he didn't have a say in the matter. Basically, because the constitution itself says we (including the government and LAWS since they are MADE with the constitution in mind) are not to encroach on others' rights, this means any right we currently have cannot be taken away or removed without it becoming unconstitutional to do so. Roe V Wade made abortion legal and established our right to both them and privacy. Everything established with the help of RvW also applies. They cannot be undone or it will BY THE WORDS OF THE CONSTITUTION ITSELF be recognized as unconstitutional. This goes for ALL established human rights. Which means those anti Trans and LGBT laws in themselves are also unconstitutional. And then there's the forcing religion on others (using religion or references to religion to make laws) that also encroaches on everyone's right to practice (their own) religion. You cannot undermine the very document that effectively helped create the government and laws that run this country without it being against the country itself. Today is Intersex Day of Remembrance, also known as Intersex Solidarity Day, which was first celebrated in 2005 on the initiative of Intersex International. The date coincides with the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a 19th century French intersex figure whose memoirs were later published by Michel Foucault. Today is a day to draw attention to the struggle for intersex rights, whose issues are often overlooked, even within the LGBTIQ+ community.

The violent nature of the socially constructed sex and gender binary is perhaps most clearly exposed in the existence of intersex people. The struggles for both intersex and transgender liberation are deeply interconnected and intertwined. True liberation for queer people isn’t possible without the liberation of intersex people from the forced gender and sex binaries of our society.

I call it "Progressive Pride Flag 2.0." The saturated rainbow represents the community in general. The triangles in the middle mean different things. The pink, white and blue represent trans folks.

The black and brown triangles represents BIPOC folks and those we've lost to AIDS.

The yellow triangle in the middle with the purple circle is actually the intersex flag but it's been added to the design for balance and representation.

Reposted from @campout.florida Intersex Awareness Day commemorates the anniversary of a protest held by members of the intersex community during the annual American Academy of Pediatrics convention in 1996. Activists gathered in action against the standard practice of invasive gender-based surgeries that many intersex children have been forced to undergo without consent.  To understand the importance of Intersex Awareness Day, it’s also necessary to have an accurate definition of what it means to be intersex. People who are intersex were born with a genetic, genital, reproductive, or hormonal configuration that isn’t easily categorized as “male” or “female.”   Being born intersex does not dictate what a person’s gender will be -- intersex people can have any gender identity, just like endosex (non-intersex) people. As Jill Conway reminds her readers, that since it wasn't until the early 1900's that scientists connected sex chromosomes to sex-linked characteristics or that they discovered the workings of hormones -- "we [begin] to see why for some forty years the exact nature of sex-differentiation and its psychic accompaniment was a subject of intense, though inconclusive debate." What exactly differentiated men from women and why the species evolved into the two sexes, then, unsurprisingly confounded Victorian theorists such as Herbert Spencer and Patrick Geddes. Thus, they and other specialists constructed a stereotypical dyadic model. Other than the different sex organs and physical differences, men were considered the active agents, who expended energy while women were sedentary, storing and conserving energy. Victorian theories of evolution believed that these feminine and masculine attributes traced back to the lowest forms of life. A dichotomy of temperaments defined feminine and masculine: an anabolic nature which nurtured versus a katabolic nature which released energy respectively.

Oct 26 is Intersex Awareness Day! Intersex people are those born with body parts that do not fit cleanly into a gendered “binary”. All across the country (and the world) beautiful intersex children are forced to have genital surgery without their consent in an attempt to “normalize” them into a binary. Often these procedures come with significant risks including losing partial or complete sexual sensation.
