AITA for refusing to argue with my boyfriend?
Alright, so.
My (25F) bf (27M) loves arguing and discussing. I appreciate discussions as long as we're both being respectful and we're actually talking towards something, when it gets to discussing for the sake of it (and I can tell it's happening when he starts attacking all of my points of view and I start getting confused about what we are actually disagreeing on) I just can't. I start shaking and I have to take a break before I get mean or irrationally defensive.
Last time we fought it was about "standing up" for oneself. He got really unpleasant with a clerk at the bank because his computer wasn't working, made a scene in the bank and a woman even told him that if he didn't stop she wouId stop being a civilian and become a police officer, and he'll have to deal with offense to a public officer (we live in france, if it matters).
I hated every second but I just tried to ask if there was anything to do about the computer, and when the poor clerk told me no I thanked him and told him (and my bf) that it wasn't the clerk's fault at all, it's something that happens and we couldn't do anything about it.
When we were out of the bank, I confronted him about it, telling him that I found it unpleasant and he had been really disrespectful, and he told me that I always do this, always stay too calm and accomodating even when I shouldn't be, that when he requires a service he needs it done, I reminded him that human beings can't be machines and always "function perfectly" (and well, not even the machines can), we argued a bit, he refused to have lunch with me and we parted ways (we don't live together).
We talked again about it a couple of days later, and he told me that he gets this need to argue with me every now and then and when he can't provoke a reaction in me he starts losing it.
The thing is that I'm really hard to rile up, and I like this about myself, also because I don't really like who I become when I get angry and I'm not given the chance to calm down by myself for a while ( I get really defensive and never admit I'm wrong, sarcastic and cold).
He loves the provoking part of it, saying things just to make me mad and get an angry reaction out of me, it's how he argues with his family and he seems to need it.
I know this, we have been together for nine years now, and when I was younger (especially at 17-22) I was much more hot headed, but now I don't really see the point honestly.
We couldn't reach a definite agreement about how to handle this, even though we talked about it for literal hours, we both agree that it's not a deal breaker but we didn't get much past this.
So, AITA for refusing to argue with him when he seems to need it? He told me again and again that he never means to get disrespectful towards me during those discussions and that they never change his opinion of me (yeah, I'm a bit anxious), so it's not like he's insulting me? Should I just play along a bit and let that part of me loose for a while? I'm really not sure, and again, we already eviscerated this from every point of view and didn't get a conclusion, so I need an outside perspective.
(english isn't my first or second language so if anything isn't clear I'll be happy to explain!)
What are these acronyms?

RIN ITOSHI was an actor. Always playing the rude, cold guy. The emotionless, indifferent man who was in fact a broken little boy inside. He was a huge liar. Constantly putting a facade between him and other people. Maybe it was a shield, not to be hurt again. Maybe it was a weapon, not to be approached again. He was lonely. And he knew it very well, deep inside of his slewed heart. But wasn't solitude better than suffering? So he sticked around his old mentra. He had other things to attend to, to think of.
RIN ITOSHI despised you. No- he hated you, with all his guts. You were so annoying; always talking to his teammates, laughing with them as you brought water bottles so they could drink. Could you just do your job without talking for once ? When Ego announced you were going to replace Anri for a few weeks, because she was severely ill, he swore he was going to jump out of the window. It could’ve been anyone else - but no, Ego chose you, you out of all the qualified, useful, and actually smart people out there who wanted the job. Why ? He wasn’t the type to complain, he couldn’t care less, but just seeing you on the field made him feel a boiling anger deep in his stomach, and you felt it the first time you laid your eyes upon him.
"You got a staring problem, perhaps ?", you asked, raising an eyebrow at his staring. He looked so fucking irritating, his cold and condescending gaze fixed on you. Your tone betrayed your harsh thoughts.
"No. Just wondering why you look so boring and annoying even though I’ve never talked to you.", he answered, with a mocking tone - still, his face remained neutral, judgmental even. You scoffed.
"The feeling’s mutual."
Since that day, you two argued with each other constantly. His teammates never seemed to understand why; and Rin was too busy thinking about what comebacks he could said to your petty insults to actually explain them why you were so.. frustrating. He couldn’t understand it either. But seeing your shocked face, your scoffs and your protests, your upset behavior tainted by a sharp words just brought something new in him, something he couldn’t explain with proper words. Joy maybe ? It was fun to tease you. And it was also easy, too.
RIN ITOSHI, in all honesty, took a liking in this little game. He wouldn’t admit it, though. So, when the day came when you stopped answering his bittersweet notes and decided to ignore him, he felt strange. Weird. Why ? Wasn’t it the whole point ? Bore you until you stop to annoy him ? Why was he missing your plain, insignificant comebacks ? Your rude attitude towards him ? And now he was jealous. Jealous to see that his fellow teammates had all your attention. He wanted your attention all to himself. Because what Rin Itoshi wants, Rin Itoshi gets. And there was no way you were going to ignore him longer. He couldn’t bear it.
RIN ITOSHI decided - by his own chef - that it was enough. You were surprised, to say the least, to see Rin in front of you, completely silent, looking at you dead in the eye. You frowned, taking a step back. (Definitely not scared because he was creepy)
"Okay… I don’t think that staring is your only problem, I guess.. Can you-"
"Can you shut up, for once ? I need you for something.", he cut you before you could even finish, and you rolled your eyes. So ignoring him didn’t solve the whole thing.
"So now, you need help ?", you added, amused, "I thought you were a big boy that didn’t need the help of a "unqualified, dumb, assistant","
"I’ve changed my mind. Do you want to be the one to blame if we lose the next game ?"
You weren’t paid enough for this job. So you just sighed, accepting your defeat and your fate. Without further discussion, he dragged you to the gym. And that’s when the whole, well, quite unusual tradition took place at first.
RIN ITOSHI apologized. For his rude behavior, for his sharp words, while he was training in the gym - as you were watching his progression, of course. Every day, you were at the same hour at this exact spot in the gym, talking to Rin as he was training his already sculpted body. He was still teasing you, but this deep boiling anger in his stomach became, day by day, more.. pleasant. Until the day Isagi walked in, interrupting your little chat, and winked at him, murmuring in his ear to "make a move". That’s when he connected the dots. He had feelings for you.
Confessing his feelings was hard. Especially since Anri came back. You were supposed to leave in a few days, and Rin couldn’t help but feel the sting in his heart. Was he going to see you again ? He couldn’t let you go just like that. Not after what you’ve did to him. So the last day, after you had greeted all his teammates, you walked out the door of the Blue Lock’s building, a sigh leaving your lips. He wasn’t there. How foolish to think that maybe, your feelings were reciprocated. You walked away, until something - no, someone, grabbed your wrist. It was Rin. You turned to face him, surprised. You opened your mouth to say something-
"I like you. A lot. Fuck- No. I love you. Don’t go just yet. Please."
And how could you refuse this confession ? (You can’t anyway.)
RIN ITOSHI and you started dating after that. He was a little stiff at the beginning; the man wasn’t used to be loved nor taken care of. So you taught him. Light touches here and there; Rin was a quiet, shy, yet attentive lover. He wasn’t too fond of PDA : first, he didn’t want to include you in paparazzi issues, and second, he wasn’t completely comfortable in public in general. He would put his hand on the small of your back in a crowded street to show you the way, lock your pinkies together all the time, probably press a kiss on your hairline; but that’s all he would do in public.
"This way, love. Careful, we don’t want you to get lost, do we ?"
RIN ITOSHI, in private, is a touch-starved, self-deprived boy who needs your whole attention and affection. Please, cuddle him. Let him be the little spoon, and he would absolutely melt. He’s putty in your hands as soon as you reach for him. Lay down on the couch, with him resting on your chest, your heartbeat lulling him to sleep as you fingers play gently with his hair, softly scratching his scalp just like he likes it. If you stop, he will wake-up in no time; glaring at you with a slight pout on his lips.
"I didn’t know I asked you to stop."
"My hand hurts, Rin."
"Bold of you to assume that I care."
"Please ? Just for 5 minutes.", he added in a whisper after some seconds, practically begging for your touch. His sudden change of attitude caused you to chuckle.
RIN ITOSHI absolutely dies for your kisses. He lives for them, okay ? Your plush lips pressed against his, with you sitting on his lap as his hands traveled to the back of your thighs, holding you in place. One arm around his neck, the other hand supporting yourself by grabbing his shoulder, he swears he could spent hours just making out with you. His tongue buried down your throat, bodies grinding and pressed against each other’s as you both let your eager lips devour your love.
RIN ITOSHI who kisses your insecurities away (literally). He knows exactly what it feels like to have insecurities and to be misunderstood about them, so don’t worry (he’s definitely an overthinker too.) You’re not going to be insecure on his watch. He would reassure you all the time, taking his precious time whispering sweet nothings in your ear, hyping you up. He wants you to be the most comfortable possible around him. Communication is the main key in your relationship. He took some time to finally let down his walls, so he intends you to do the same : without any pressure, of course. You can trust him, he can trust you. You both rely on each other’s back, and you can always count on him for anything. He’s not a man of many words, but for you, he would make an effort.
"Shh, darling. Come on, look at me, please,", he gently tilted your chin up for you to look at him, "dry those tears, my love. I’ve never met someone as strong, as beautiful and as courageous as you. If only you could see yourself with my eyes.. Don’t listen to them. They’re just jealous of you. Honestly, they should be jealous of me. After all, what did I do to deserve an angel like you ?"
RIN ITOSHI was an actor. Always playing the rude, cold guy. The emotionless, indifferent man who was in fact a broken little boy inside. He was a huge liar. And perhaps you could heal the broken inner-child that still suffer in silence today. But with certainty, with you, behind closed doors, maybe- maybe, for you, he could grow into a whole different person.
"I think that.. I think that I like the person I am when I’m with you. Does it make sense ? Yeah. You bring a side of me that I don’t want to let go. I think it’s a soulmate thing, don’t you think so ?"

Hello, dear Josefa ✨
I hope you are doing well!
While Flower and myself were talking about our favourite couples of the napoleonic era, our conversation found its way to the Soults which we would love to group with couples like the Davouts or the Mortiers but can't because of the cheating on our monsieur le maréchal Soult's part.
With that in mind, we wondered: Do we know how madame Soult reacted to the cheating? How did her behaviour change through the first days, weeks, months after finding out? Did it even change?
We are aware that we don't know any details of the actual conversation where the couple discussed this matter but we still wanted to ask!
Thank you for your time and effort! c:
We do not really know, I fear. We do not even know when and how exactly she learned about Soult's little secondary Spanish family. It is quite possible that it did not come completely unexpected anymore, as people in Paris had been gossipping about Soult's alleged infidelities ever since 1810, and in one of his 1811 letters Soult kind of had admitted to a marital misstep.
If I remember correctly, Soult finally was granted permission to leave Spain by mid-February 1813, and could leave at the beginning of March. On his way through Southern France he took the occasion to go see his old mother in Saint-Amans, whom he originally had wanted to visit four years earlier, on his way into Spain. I do not remember (I'm not even sure if it is clear) if Louise and the kids already met with him in Saint-Amans or if they waited for him in Paris but I suspect they went to Saint-Amans and from there back to the capital that Soult reached at the beginning of April. He soon had to leave again, this time with Napoleon to Germany, on the 1813 campaign, and on 12 April he already gave full powers in all matters to his wife so she could handle affairs during his absence.
Did she at this point already know about the full extent of these affairs? It's likely, but we do not have any real clue.
She must have known by late June 1813, however (interestingly, that's the same time when, many miles away, Maria de la Paz Baylèn and her little baby son leave Spain and enter France). We know that because Soult in his letter fom 23 June at least vaguely hints at how hurt Louise must have been by his confessions. He invites her to come to meet with him at Dresden with their children, despite the fact that [...]
you will not be lodged very well, but you will be with me, your sorrows will cease, your cheerfulness will return, and you will be certain that, despite everything that has happened, you have never ceased to be tenderly loved [...]
"Despite everything that has happened" clearly means that by that point, Louise is fully aware of the existence of Maria de la Paz and her baby. And she had taken it badly, as was to be expected. Obviously, she doubted Soult's love for her, and she may have considered taking further steps, or at least that's something Soult feared:
I'm not talking about the other feelings, for nothing could add to their strength other than the step you're taking right now.
(All emphasis by me)
And then he continues to implore her to come and sit down with him and talk it all over.
So, obviously lots of trouble in honeymoon land. From the looks of it, I'd say Louise did not so much react with fury, but rather turned sad and depressed - which probably hit Soult far more. Her fury she apparently kept in stock for one French emperor to be used when she heard that her husband was about to be sent back to Spain again. But that's a different story 😁.
Thank you for the question, and I hope this kind of suffices, as it seems to be all information there is. (All quotes from N. Gotteri, "Le Maréchal Soult", as usual.)

Caryl going forward in S2
Now that the season is over, I've had a chance to collect my thoughts on the direction I think they are looking to go for S2 and I am even more convinced everything we've seen was linked and deliberately choreographed to highlight the upcoming Caryl payoff. This includes the season as a whole as well as the finale and the Book of Carol promo. I'm going tag it but keep in mind this discussion will assume things from having watched the season finale and contain spoilers as such, so you have been warned.
It's a known fact at this point Daryl's intent on going home. The man is on a mission. He wants to get the kid to where he needs to go, then he wants a radio to contact home or a boat to get him there. Regardless of whatever anyone said to him or deceptive manipulation attempts used the man stayed steadfast in his desire. And while he may have begun to care about Laurent over the season, at each turn brought forth by various others; Isabelle (multiple times), Fallou, Azlan, Laurent, and Lasong, Daryl once again repeated himself like the looped tape recorded message he made in episode 1.
They've also made it abundantly clear through parallels, name dropping, and actual conversations/on screen appearance that for Daryl, Carol is his home. Nothing could have personified this better than the scene we got with Sylvie in the car. She asked if he had ever been in love ... words we have only ever heard him fathom to mention to anyone except Carol; his distant gaze and physical reaction all we'd need to see to know who he was thinking about. IMO there is no other option. If they had truly wanted to do any ship baiting their chance to do so was sitting in the damn backset and it would have taken nothing but a change in camera angle to do so. They didn't because it isn't ... the focus and end point is/has always been Caryl. (That is all I am going to say on this because my focus is Caryl). The tag line plastered across the season 2 promo of "To find home is to find each other" both confirms this as the plotline's intent as well as stands in direct contrast to everything everyone tried to convince Daryl of in the finale. He may listen to Isabelle and Lasong but neither were effective in changing his mind because it was never a possibility.
Daryl wants to go back to Carol.
Now I don't believe for a second Lasong has no other motives besides "nurturing the next messiah" which he proved by trying to guilt Daryl into staying at the Nest. He reminds me of the overly religious zealot in The Mist, putting on a nice act until shit hits the fan and what others want goes against their objective. These are the very same kind of tactics Isabelle has been using from the beginning - either admitting to faking the ocean drawing and then her abhorrent attempt to imply Daryl was abandoning Laurent like his grandfather did to his family. Newsflash guys, Daryl is only a "father figure" to Laurent because YOU made him so with lies and with-holding the truth before Daryl ever got there. The only way anyone in France can seem to grasp changing his mind is to resort to lying or low blows which only serves to lessen the strength of their stance, and thankfully Daryl saw through it each time. (Props to & exclusion from this crappy sect goes to Fallou because he seems to be the only one listening).
All of this would have been great by itself and I was in LOVE with TBOC promo beforehand but it got even better post finale watch. "I don't know if this is the place I'm supposed to be." The voiceover gives me the impression that after being forced by fate to stay in France and not let Laurent be the latest walker snack, Daryl still isn't buying the whole where you find yourself might be your home line. He's still worried about Carol, still possibly field the ever constant questions from Izzy about "maybe he belongs in France". (I'm really getting tired of hearing that from her ... no means no, woman). This line from Daryl in itself shows that we are continuing with the shows main constant. Daryl Dixon wants to go home. He's not staying to make a new family, he's not forgetting about the people who matter most to him. The man is stuck and literally being fucked over by fate at every turn.
I have theories about how the Laurent managed to track Daryl down to the beach and none of them are good for other characters but fall in line with what they have done in the past - we'll leave those under a pin for now. None of the characters are named fate lol.
Take away for season 1 and heading in to season 2, Daryl wants to go home and looks to continue his search on ways to get himself there. Luckily for him, home (Carol) is in the process of making that trip shorter.

AITA for advising my goddaughter not to marry a penniless sailor?
u/PoetryandProse
Looking for an honest opinion here.
Some year ago my best friend died. I am childless unfortunately, but she left behind three daughters, at the time they were E 16, A 14, and M 10. I became something of a mother figure to them, especially to A. We both love poetry and dislike playing cards. Also important: their father is high rank (I can't say what without doxing them).
This year, A was 19. She met a man, W 21, who was in the navy. He had no money, no current posting, and way too much swagger. Imagine my horror when A told me they were engaged! Not only was he far below her in status, but he had no plan to support her as a wife or a mother to their inevitable children. He told me he was "lucky" and he knew he would be rich. As if!
We are at war with France right now! W could get lucky and win huge prize money or he could be unlucky and die. Or come home missing half his limbs, or just never make more than his salary. This is a huge risk for A! And her personal fortune isn't really enough to live on.
So I told her that this was a horrible idea and to break it off. She did. Now A has been really sad and withdrawn, she's even lost weight. I really feel like I made the right decision, but it's hard to see her suffering. AITA?
Top Comment:
u/MiniBabyCakes
Wow, NTA at all!
I don't love the classism in this post, but you care about this girl and you told her some hard truths. She probably isn't ready for the responsibility of being married if she's making these reckless decisions. Especially to accept someone without any money or a job!
Hopefully, A will move on soon and find someone else. All you can do is keep being there for her.
u/BunnyBunBun I don't know, I want more INFO. Did A actually ask for advice or was OP just sticking her nose in without anyone asking? I have a feeling that the class thing is a bigger deal than OP is admitting...
u/Indiana-Dreams Are you saying she's just supposed to stand there and watch a person she cares about ruin her life? And who cares if she's classist, this is a bad move no matter what!

I will admit, I am not very knowledgeable on the enlightenment era stuff, besides getting some giggles at the posts of my friends and was never really interested in it aside from the stuff with Catherine the Great that was going on around the time. But now after scrolling your blog and actually witnessing the sheer amount of DRAMA QUEENS, I've gotten somewhat curious 🤭
If you don't mind me asking, can you please describe the relationship of the "two toxic old men" to a person like me, who doesn't know much, but is willing to learn?
Fritz and Voltaire? With pleasure!
So, in 1736, Frederick, then the crown prince of Prussia, sent some fanmail to Voltaire. Being the attention whore he was, especially when it came to royalty, V responded with great enthusiasm and the two struck up a correspondence full of mutual flattery. At one point V enlisted his friend Thieriot to help send literary news (he was supposed to be paid: he wasn't, ever) and he...sent a lot of gossip about Voltaire. Another important thing is also that Émilie du Châtelet, V's long-term lover, and Fritz HATED each other. And it's also generally agreed that Fritz was gay.
1740 comes around, Fritz's awful dad finally croaks, and he becomes king and wants to, in his own words, possess Voltaire. He and Voltaire met in person for the first time in September, briefly, then again in November where V spends his birthday in Prussia. Party time. The correspondence from during that visit is amazing, V wants to leave, Fritz begs him to come back and says he'll kiss him on Friday, V tells Fritz he loves him more than Émilie, they call each other mistress, Fritz complains that V is expensive behind his back but he'll win over Émilie because he can pay him more, V says he's not interested in Greek affairs (read: gay stuff) despite the flirting but he is there for Fritz, Émilie begs V to come back saying she's sick and gets V's friend Cideville to send him a poem about how hot she is, etc etc.
At some point, Fritz tried to force Voltaire to come to Prussia by spreading gossip in France that'd force him out of the country and iirc succeeded, but I don't remember which visit was that off the top of my head.
They briefly meet again in 1742. In 1743, Voltaire was sent to Prussia as a spy, at which he was hilariously godawful (Fritz answered most of his diplomatic questionnaire with jokes). After Émilie died in 1749, V moved to Prussia in 1450, which went fine at first, but they slowly started to realise they really can't fucking stand to live with each other. Voltaire got involved in a financial scandal and also royally pissed off Maupertuis (Émilie's former lover, president of the Berlin Academy) and with that Fritz, culminating in Fritz burning all copies of Diatribe du docteur Akakia.
V resigned and left in early 1752, but he was (unlawfully, Fritz had no authority there) detained by an agent of Fritz's in Frankfurt because he took a book of poetry in which Fritz satirised other European leaders. What followed was a very entertaining mess of miscommunication (please do yourself a favour and read the correspondence from that time, google translate does the job fine) and theatrics on Voltaire's part, who kept insisting he was just a sick old man who only wanted to go take the waters. He writes to everyone, his niece and current lover writes to Wilhelmine, V at some point pulls a gun on someone, Freytag writes to Fritz like "he looks like a skeleton, is he really sick or does he always look like that?," eventually V's luggage in which the book was in gets delivered, he coughs it up, but he still isn't let go, eventually Fritz himself has to write to Freytag like "yo, wtf is going on." It's a disaster and it ruins their relationship for good.
Voltaire is so pissed off that he writes a memoir about his experiences in Prussia where he outs Fritz (...and also his brother Henri) as gay in no uncertain terms several times and also edits a few letters to his niece in the vein of Richardson's Pamela, painting himself as a poor victim of the seductive king. Which...lmao, really, V? Really? I translated the first one here, currently working on the second. Though those letters weren't discovered to be edited until 1991, so many older biographies just take them as fact.
Anyway, the two stopped writing to each other for a while. They reconnected at the urging of Fritz's sister Wilhelmine when the Seven Years War was going badly and Fritz was suicidal, and it went well on the surface, but Voltaire kept writing to his friends about how he's totally over Fritz, he hates him, he wishes he was hit by a cannonball, he ridicules his suicide letter behind his back, etc. Fritz also keeps shit-talking Voltaire behind his back the whole time, but is overjoyed when he gets a letter. As an example of later correspondence, here's a translation of an excerpt from the "it's good that you're such a colossal dick or your perfection would embarrass humanity" letter. Either way, they slowly reconciled and kept writing to each other until Voltaire's death.
I know I left a ton out and I wrote it pretty much all from memory so could be that I fucked up the details, but I hope it helps. Wish I could include some more letter excerpts because they're fantastic, but it's long as it is.
Sources
If you want a good intro on these two, read the bios by Nancy Mitford - she has the fatal flaw of not citing shit but they're short and fun and easy to find and she's one of the few who are able to see that both of them were a total mess. For more academic sources, there's Aldridge (pro: cites letter numbers in-text, very balanced when it comes to Fritz, con: impossible to find) or Besterman (pro: most comprehensive, dude compiled his letters so he knows his shit, con: big bias against Fritz) for Voltaire and...hm, I'm trying to think of a Fritz biographer that'd have any info on those two. Blanning hasn't much and I've yet to get around to MacDonogh, so I can't say where that one is good and bad.
There are also letters here and here that you can googletranslate and I really wish Electronic Enlightenment wasn't paywalled (if you know someone who has a NYPL card to lend you their login info…I recommend) cause it has like all of V's letters and an AMAZING search.

Until now since the start of the year I was like "Yeah, Sakura fans are finally shutting their mouths* But no, they literally started haressing Ikemoto and Kishi, planned to ruin an interview in France and start a protests about why Sakura hasn't been showed yet. What is their problem? Are we crying about the fact that Hinata Has been shown only once yet and She is sealed which means She will have no fight or important scene for a longer time? Are we harassing the creators for it? We're not and yet they still manage to blame us that we just made it up and used wrong translations, that they never said it (Even tho they literally admitted to it before), sick fandom, I'm so sick of them.
If I was kishi or Ike, I would take the treats personally and kill skr off or something, because if a mid character has such mid fandom...I'm truly sorry for what kishi and ike are going through.
I am not surprise this is the same fandom that wanted to ban Naruto after NaruHina happened. They are fully aware of how bad they are, but once people start pointing out what they said they quickly try sweeping it under the rug cause they know its evidence of how bad they are.
Agreed honestly feel Sakura should have gotten killed off to give Sarada her MS. As it stands other then being the doctor which can easily be handled by Shizune or Tsunade she has no actual place in the plot.
Yeah I really hope they don't actually ruin the interview cause I think I saw that Kishimoto was looking forward to it.

Hello there! I'm thankful for the anon option since I'm shy, but if you want to heal... There is a series that has Ivantill in it. Sort of.
I'll only put some very nice anecdote here, since the whole Alien Stage Fandom goes on about parallel and alternate universes.
The series is Skam France, specifically season 3. Skam means shame in Norwegian language. The premise is about a guy who's closeted and tries his hardest to be heteronormative (but we know Till doesn't have To Try), and the new guy in the school whos first day saw nothing but this dude (Ivan, let's be real. And this is in the TRAILER.)
There's a lot of mental health and sexuality/some naughties involved though, so thread carefully.
The story progresses into the guys locking eyes and the Till-like character is very drawn in by this Ivan! After a lot of ups and down... This is a line exchange that is happening in the series:
Ivan: The first time I saw you wasn't in the common room. It was on the corridor, on my first day. I didn't know anyone, and you were there, with your friends. You didn't see me...
...but I saw you. You're all I saw, actually.
Till: What would you have done, if I hadn't come to the common room? Or like... If I'd taken the bus right before, or right after? Maybe we would've never met?
Ivan: I admit, it's kinda scary.
Till: Well, it happened in the end, so...
Ivan: You know, when I have a choice to make... I always picture two paths. I end up choosing one of them, because I have to make a decision at some point. But I'll never know what I missed by not taking the other one.
Till: And right now, don't you feel like you took the right path?
Ivan: I do. Of course I do
Till: When I make a choice... I tell myself there are other Tills... In other parallel universes who took the other path. That way, between all the Tills in all the universes, we've tried everything.
Ivan: What are the other Tills doing, now?
Till: Right now?
Ivan: Mhm
Till: Well, there's a very ripped Till... Surfing on a huge wave in Bali.
Ivan, chuckling: Okay
Till: There's another one on a skyscraper in New York. He's singing a huge deal worth, like, a millions of dollars with very angry aliens.
Ivan: What makes you say your businessman Till didn't climb up his tower and jump? Like, he had a big burnout?
Till, chuckling: That's awful! Have you never thought about it?
Ivan: I don't really believe in it, to be honest.
Till: Well, you're wrong. You're wrong because there are many Ivans and Tills in other parallel universes... Who are together, right now.
Hope you enjoy this fragment! It's hilarious that I didn't edit almost anything except the names and it fits the Fandom really well.
Side note, canon made them tragic and toxic and one sided but if any of you guys need copium, here you have it.
Hey! I like the show just from how you described it, seems very interesting and I like the concept so I'll give it a look! the dialogue part is also pretty funny because if I hadn't been told before I would assume that's actual Ivantill dialogue....so in character........all I have to do is gaslight myself into seeing Ivan and Till in the movie and I wont even need therapy...thank you anon! Hiiiii
I saw your added tags to that post about nuclear testing in Algeria, and honestly I’m just genuinely curious as an Algerian, but what do they actually teach you about Algeria? Like this is genuine curiosity and not trying to stir any pots
You can absolutely skip this ask if ur uncomfortable with it btw! No hard feelings at all, again, it’s all just curiosity
(*Sigh* Yeah not gonna lie I've been debating about answering this. It's not being uncomfortable that scares me Anon, far from it. It's the clowns I'll have to deal with afterward that worries me. But this needs to be said.)
Not much.
But it could be because I didn't grow up in France. I grew up on an old colony of France, Réunion Island. Because our educative system tends to be selective about the subject we have to learn depending of where we live. So it might be part of the reasons I was taught so little about the subject.
For example : I am a french white woman who's been taught at school about the extensive damage of French Slavery. Because it was part of my island's History. But most of my countrymen who grew up in France don't know about it. They just know it happened and that's it. I have to explain to them why it was really fucked up all the time. It's possible quite other french people are more aware of what happened with Algerian War than I am just because of where they lived when they were taught on the subject.
So understand that what I am giving you here is my personal experience and and isn't necessarily representative of everyone's experience when it came to learn about Algerian War. Now this is out of the way, here's how I learned about it. In 2008, which is the year I passed the second part of my Baccalauréat (aka the Bac aka the final boss of exam of public school in France for those who don't know), I learned about Algerian war. Barely.
See the thing is, all our History lessons during the last year before the Bac is about WWI and WWII. We especially study the fuck out of WWII. During the whole year we had to learn extensively about it. And being the main subject of the exam, the teacher made more time to make sure we knew about it than anything else, thus…We went quickly on our lessons about the Algerian war.
I just remember that people were torn about General DeGaulle's actions during that time and that it was a war of independence. We didn't study any of the battles. I think. If we did it probably was mostly dates rather than about the events (and I'll admit this, I'm shit at remembering dates) We didn't learn about the Gerboise Bleue. And that I am sure because this would have stayed in my mind. Why am I so certain I'd remember ? When we were taught about what happened in WWII about Hiroshima, we were taught how it wasn't ok. That dropping a bomb on a country full of civilians was terrible. I am quite certain me and my classmates would have picked up on the HYPOCRISY if we were told about the Gerboise Bleue right after. And that was in 2008. I heard that they're simplifying the lessons more and more to avoid having too many students to repeat years. I am not even sure they're even teaching about it now.
So there you have it. I wasn't told about it. School didn't really talk about it. And my parents and grand-parents didn't talk about it. And my generation isn't going to talk about it to their children because they don't even know about it. And even in my case, I don't know where to look to learn. The sources I've founds on the Gerboise Bleue are...Limited and frankly I don't trust them.

Rewatched Dirty Dancing for the first time in at least a decade
Rewatched Havana Nights, too. I've seen the original mores time, but it's been at least a decade since I've seen either.
Of course, the story is a moment in time and ends there. But people like "what happened next" and I totally went to look for fanfic on it, I admit. Way too many "she's pregnant" stories - hell no. Johnny should not have trouble getting condoms at that time in history and given Penny's recent trauma, I just don't really buy them not using birth control.
But what do I think would happen? Well, I want my couples together. But what do they do, besides be in love? I will say Baby and Johnny are part of the formation and growth of each other and each other and the the events influenced their world views in ways that would linger forever, even if they didn't stay a couple. But I'd keep 'em together, because I'm a sucker for happy ending.
I admit to not watching all that closely this time around, so may have missed details telling us what they might want.
Did Johnny really truly love dance in the sense of wanting it as a career? I know Penny said it was all she ever wanted to do - not sure if she was being honest about it. If I made one really have success at it, it'd be her, I think.
I remember how Johnny felt about about Baby's father helping Penny. Now, yes, saying he's nothing is part of his own skewed view of his own worth. But would he like to be able to do something "important" because it's what he wants, instead of just for the regard it would grant him? That ability to help, and the willingness that Baby had to do so, are something he so admires, and doe he want to emulate it?
I do think Johnny has both desire and disdain for that upper middle class lifestyle (indeed, some of the disdain at, least, is envy-driven, though some deserved, as well). The security, the comfort, the women who take care of themselves and smell nice and all the "softness" and ease are have their appeals. I don't know if he could accomplish it - college isn't expensive then (well, depending on where you are), but affording to live while you are at school is an entirely different thing. And I'm not sure his pride or sense of "rightness" would allow for college-graduate wife Baby paying his way through later (and, of course, he'd be older). College is by no means a necessity, though. But what flavor of meaningful work would suit and please him?
Anyone else think his uncle might be better off than his own folks - union painter/plasterer would not be bad pay (though it depends on how many weeks work there are each year, and, of course, is blue collar).
Baby. Frances. She grew up so much. She went from viewing her father as almost perfect to realizing he was a (still good) man with his own flaws and biases. She learned you can't always change the unjust things, but trying matters anyway. But she's not as naive anymore. It's obviously important that she not give up wanting to help - to make the world a better place. But it's the method of it, I'm curious to. Will she be a lawyer or economist or something else? Certainly, I don't expect her to live in the same sort of "bubble" she grew up in - with the idea that "those people" are "other" - that it's good to help, but that they occupy different social spheres. So I do think she'd want a more mixed (economically, socially, racially) environment and social circle in her adulthood. Does she still go for the Peace Corps or for more mundane help at home? The world and youth culture change so much in the next few years (though we have to be mindful that the actual sixties had a whole lot boring, non-activist, traditional life-style young people), and how is she affected by those changes? Don't want her the cynic.
Then for Havana Nights, there's a whole other pickle with the political elements and consequences. Javier is hopeful for a brighter future. And Castro was quite popular for a quite a while, and there really were significant improvements in life for many. But he not a proponent of violence, and the executions, imprisonments, and setting folks up to spy on each other will not endear him. So how long until he leaves, and what does he do when he does? He's devoted to his family and is the major financial provider for his mother and nephew. Having dependents makes so much more difficult. Will he get leave for the US? Will he get his family there, too or just send remittances? And his brother is a whole 'nother can of worms. Even if he does come to the US, he absolutely not going to mesh well with the earliest/first-wave emigrants, who favor Batista like US influence over Cuba.
Katey is very much the typical teen in that she no idea what she wants to do with her life. She doesn't have a "direction" or dream job or anything like that. Still very much finding her way. Just with broader horizons after her experiences. And far more cognizant of of the impact of politics. Don't know what I'd have her do.

LV 1854
Following up yesterday's Shizuka is today's LV model Gong Jun!
I actually adore Louis Vuitton. Many, many, (many) years ago, when I got my first bonus check at work, I was so proud of myself that I bought myself a LV handbag. A ridiculous use of money, especially at that time, but I wanted to reward myself for working so hard with a fancy purse. I still have the handbag, and every time I look at it I remember how it felt to hold that check in my hands, and feel that sense of accomplishment and joy. I still love it as much as I did then, after all these years. So I can't tell you how delighted I was when Gong Jun became the ambassador for LV!
I'm not saying I necessarily like all their fashion looks, because I don't, but I don't think the point of high fashion is to necessarily like the looks. I think it's more about appreciating the artistry. Some outfits, I must admit, I am just too artistically impaired to appreciate. But put Junjun in LV, and suddenly my artistic appreciation goes way, way up.
The inspiration for this fig is Junjun's pics from one of his photo shoots for LV on his Weibo account on August 17 last year:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the exact inspiration pic for the fig! See how his leg is kicked up like that and his arm is alongside his crossbody bag?
Tumblr media
I love those flowy white pants on him! Also a big fan of that crossbody bag, it seems a lot bigger and more functional than the one he was wearing at the concert. Which I love for obvious sentimental reasons, but it's the smallest and most impractical thing in the world. I can fit my phone and the world's tiniest wallet in it, and that's literally it. Well, and a lip balm, Junjun was right about that when he showed it off at the concert.
There is a LOT going on with this jacket. For fig comparison purposes, I tried to find this jacket on the US LV site, but was unable to. So I went to their China site, and found it! It is the Multi Patches Mixed Leather Varsity Blouson Jacket, for a cool 46,500 RMB (roughly $6,700 USD).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The patch saying LV 1854, the year the house was founded in France, is of course the name of this fig. Huh, wizards. Go figure!
Tumblr media
And another 1854 patch on this sleeve! Two patches, I guess, if we count the #54. So much detail on this. Alright, on to the fig!
Tumblr media
Ahhh he's so cute even all packaged up for traveling! His perfect little face, and the beauty mark on his ear right there.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, his cute little kicked-up foot pose means that he can't stand up at all, even for a single glamor shot. So on he went onto a standee. I don't typically like to do this, but I glued him down immediately. He's really heavy - that head of his is solid! My experience with heavy headed figs with any tilt to the side has been that the weight of the fig will topple them over. I have learned this the hard way as figs have gone careening down my display shelves! I was not going to risk his precious little self, so out came the glue, and he's not budging now.
Tumblr media
Since this is a light colored outfit, I figured I'd put him on a non-white background for better contrast. Wow, his hair looks incredible from this angle! I love this hairstyle on him, and fig-wise it's perfect.
Tumblr media
The detail here on his coat is fantastic. You can also see how his foot is totally lifted up there off the base - it's not resting on the fig stand at all.
Tumblr media
Ah this is a good angle to see his foot kicked up too. He looks long and lean from this angle - definitely Junjun's proportions.
Tumblr media
Again, really fantastic level of detail on the jacket here. It's hard to see all the patches clearly Junjun's photos, but if you scroll back and forth on the actual jacket photos you'll see this is an excellent rendering at this small of a scale.
Tumblr media
You get a little bit of the flowy look of the pants here, while still preserving all the detail on his white and blue shoes. This fig maker does a phenomenal job!
Tumblr media
Speaking of the shoes, this is a great angle for the detail on them.
Tumblr media
Ahahaha, I see the wizards! And of course, instead of the name of the maison, we have Gong Jun's English name.
Tumblr media
Here you definitely get the flowy lines of his pants, and please note the little fold line in his ear, so cute (wow, never in my life did I think I'd be commenting on a fig's ear fold, life really is stranger than fiction). His eyes are expressive and beautiful, and his hair is absolutely perfect! This is another great angle of those fancy shoes, too.
Tumblr media
Here's a zoomed in pic of the front so you can see the really incredible level of detail.
Tumblr media
I made sure to get a bottoms-up photo before I glued him on the standee!
Tumblr media
The top down pic is not too exciting, I admit.
Tumblr media
A+ box cards from this fig maker. Just like with yesterday's Shizuka card, she uses the actual background from the photo.
I can't believe I forgot to mention how much I love his rascally little quirked up smile there. My favorite! Junjun you cutie!
Tumblr media
Thank you fig maker for literally listing out every piece of the inspiration for this fig on the box card! Even down to the time stamp. Amazing.
There wasn't any box art - these all came in plain white boxes, but no matter when the card art is this lovely.
Come back tomorrow to see the last fig in this series of releases!
Material: Resin
Fig Count: 346
Scene Count: 24
Rating: A varsity jacket has never looked so good!

why is voltaire a problematic fave?
Hey anon!
I assume I said this at some point when I was Candide posting. Though I think Voltaire was a hella funny guy, he did also live in 18th century France. And, a lot of his ideals reflect this fact.
(In case a Voltaire lover passes this post, I am not trying to make a Voltaire callout post I promise. I love Candide.)
For example, Voltaire was pretty antisemitic in his rhetoric. Now, whether that means he was an antisemite is a hot button debate among academics, but I tend to agree with Arthur Hertzberg, who in his book The French Enlightenment and the Jews presents a great deal of text by Voltaire which is antisemitic. He also argues that Voltaire's work was used by antisemites during his lifetime and after his death. The impact of his writing on Jews was people using it to justify their antisemitism. If we do not consider Voltaire an antisemite - as some academics do not - we must as least admit he left a legacy of antisemitism.
I should note I have not read the book, rather seen it quoted in secondary articles, and read Hertzberg's own NYTimes article where he speaks again on Voltaire.
Though I respect the idea that 18th century antisemitism and 21st century antisemitism are different because, that's correct, I think when you're describing a Jew as preying after a young woman in your book - as Voltaire does in Candide - before you protagonist stabs him and dumps his body in the trash heap is, not the best thing?
Likewise the question of racism and Voltaire is so fraught that there's an entire Wikipedia section on it. I do not know enough about Voltaire to opine, so I won't. He appears to have opposed slavery at times, but also believed that different races were quite literally different species. That's obviously, not good. Especially when we consider the rise of social darwinism, which drew on this idea of black people - and other people of color - as inferior and completely separated from white people. For more on this I'd read "Racial Capitalism in Voltaire's Enlightenment", it's a pretty good overview. I do not know much about Gianamar Giovannetti-Singh - the author - but the paper is peer reviewed, so I think it's worth a look.
Lastly, Voltaire was probably walking around with some misogyny. I don't read Candide through the lens of gender, but, yeah I could see how doing so might not bring out the best. However, much like the rest of these points, there's a lot of contradictory thought on Voltaire and women. Thankfully he was no Jean Jacques Rousseau - who I would beat with a steel chair actually.
Why is Voltaire then a fav? Because he is really funny. I love Candide, I will admit it. It's very witty and I just love his beef with the philosophy that "we live in the best of all possible worlds" (hello Leibniz).
I think Voltaire is also historically important. And we must acknowledge that. As a potential future historian - and a lover of classic literature - I think we must understand that important cultural works are made by imperfect people. We must acknowledge both their imperfections and their impacts. Safe to say, I'm never saying don't read Voltaire. I rarely say that about authors - who are dead.
This is a pretty good summary of why Voltaire is a problematic fav I think. Hope this helped!

Browns & Greens | Donny Donowitz x gn!reader
Anonymous asked: If you have the time ( and you want to) do you think you could do the prompt "Well, now, that's a sight I could get used to" With Donny please?
Thanks !
summary: preparing to go to the frontline isn't all fun and games, it's an anxious and worrying time, but at least there's little pieces here and there where you and Donny can escape a little.
tws: swearing, mentions of death & violence
The days were starting to get more and more anxiety inducing, as Aldo was preparing to get the Basterds dropped off in France; everyone was on edge, knowing that you were doing the right thing and that you were fighting the good fight did little to prevent the anxiety. None of you knew whether or not you would even last a day, no one knew whether or not they would even make it across the Channel - Nazi planes on patrol would quite happily shoot down an allied plane carrying soldiers. Capture was worse than death, everyone knew that. Capture would be so much worse than being shot down. The days were starting to get more and more morose, more and more anxiety inducing, more and more frightening.
Inspections by high command were getting more frequent, too, and inspections always meant uniform; the proper uniforms, not the oversized and dirty ones that were handed out when everyone was first drafted. The proper ones, that were the right size and smelled like soap, with boots that didn't rub against the ankles and caps that actually did fit; they would always be taken away the next morning, cleaned and dried and passed on to the next regiment that was due for inspection. Inspection days, at least, were almost fun; seeing everyone in proper uniform and going through all the different drills that Aldo had taught you. They were the better days. High command probably did it just for a laugh, but that didn't matter.
Seeing Donny in his uniform was probably your favourite thing of those days, though, he always looked so fucking handsome, even when he was letting you shave him; his head tilted back, those big brown eyes looking at your every move as you gently stroked the razor along his flesh, such concentration in your eyes that Donny couldn't help but to smile. He wasn't about to say it, too caught up how hard you were concentrating, but seeing you in your uniform brought him a fair bit of pleasure; you were so fucking good looking, the brown of the bulk of it suited you, and the red leather shoes and belt only complimented that. The pale brown shirt and dark brown tie made you look so fucking irresistible; Donny really liked that uniform, if he was honest, he would have preferred that over his standard olive drab and khaki uniform.
When you were done, wiping the razor on the towel before gently wiping his face and moving away, you took a few moments to admire his uniform, admire the way that he looked in it.
Quietly, the words left you before you could stop yourself, "well, now, that's a sight I could get used to."
"What?" Donny chuckled, furrowing his brows a little.
You shrugged, stuffing your hands in your pockets and daring to smile. "You're fucking handsome in that getup, Donowitz."
He grinned, shaking his head. "I could say the same 'bout you... why'd you get a British uniform, anyway? We're serving under the States."
You hummed as you scratched the side of your jaw. "They ran outta yankee ones, I s'pose - you think they told me?"
"Nah, just... they're a lot nicer," he laughed softly. "Makes you look so fuckin' irresistible, too."
"You best make sure you don't forget how I look in it," you teased. "It'll be gone tomorrow."
Donny grumbled, shaking his head. "I didn't bring a camera."
"Neither did I," you admitted quietly. "Maybe we ought to, uh, make some memories, instead? Y'know, so we don't forget."
He suddenly perked up, daring to close the distance so that your back was against the wall, your cap tilted back as you looked into those almost black eyes; his hands on the wall either side of your head as he let out a harsh breath. "Are you thinking what I think you are?"
You grabbed his tie, yanking him close enough so that he could feel your breath on his features, so that he could feel every word. "Tell me your idea, and I'll tell you mine."
He let out a harsh growl. "You sure you wanna hear it?"
"More than, Donowitz."
if you liked this fic, REBLOG IT - do not just leave a "like", REBLOG IT. you may also leave feedback in the form of asks, tags, etc which is greatly appreciated, but you SHOULD reblog it regardless.

Hello, archduchessofnowhere here. I had a question related to the divorce and I thought you may know about it. Auguste and Eugène seemed actually worried about the future of their children during this time, which made me wonder, what was exactly the state of their daughters in those years? Did they had a title or... Anything at all? Was there a guarantee for them in case the whole crown of Italy thing fell through?
Ooohh! This is an excellent question, thank you so much! 💖 May I elaborate a little further and also include the mother? Because Auguste's situation in early 1810 was almost equally unclear.
Just as a general rule: nobility titles in Napoleon's empire have a somewhat different meaning than in a traditional monarchy. Most often, they are little more than names - and often "noms de guerre", like in case of many marshals whose titles refer to important battles they had won under Napoleon's instruction (he did not hand out titles for battles that had taken place without his supervision). Another marshal, Soult, was "Duc de Dalmatie", Duke of Dalmatia - a region that he had never set a foot in. In a similar way, Eugène was at some point made "Prince of Venice". This however did not give him any particular rights on or in Venice. It was really just a name.
So, under Napoleon's rule, having or not having a title of nobility was to some degree just a matter of vanity and not of actual importance. In truth, it could become a real financial burden, as the title usually was connected to a "majorat", i.e., a certain mass of land and money holdings that had to pass on to the heir in its entirety if the son was to inherit the title. Few of Napoleon's nobles had an income that allowed them to maintain such vast estates without difficulty.
But I digress already.
Tumblr media
First of all, both girls were “imperial princesses”. That was the only really important thing; they belonged to Napoleon’s closer family circle (even if he had only seen little Joséphine once). Auguste at some point feared she would have to send the girls to Paris when they were seven, in order to be brought up at court; her sister-in-law calmed her nerves by assuring her that this was only true for boys (like Hortense’s own sons) and that the emperor didn’t care at all about daughters.
Little Joséphine, Eugène's older daughter, had received the title of "Princesse de Bologne" in the year she was born (attributed to her on 20 Decembre 1807, according to the Archives de France, and in the final days of the empire, she would briefly become a "Duchesse de Galliera" in addition to that). Bologna was an important city in the Kingdom of Italy her father administered in Napoleon's name, so Eugène's daughter receiving this title in the eyes of the Italians must have strengthened their impression that this was indeed their future royal family. (Or maybe Napoleon just tried to sweeten the disappointment that it had "only" been a girl.)
I am unaware of any similar titles for the second daughter Eugénie, or of any other financial arrangements being made for their future, but I admit I never studied this much. It would not surprise me, however, if Napoleon really had neglected to care much about these two girls who, technically, were his (adoptive) grand-daughters. At the end of 1808, when Eugénie was born, Napoleon's plans had already changed drastically, and surely did not include a Kingdom of Italy under the rule of a Beauharnais.
However, for their mother there was no clear plan for what would happen in the event of Eugène's death either. You have probably read in Adalbert’s biography that the marriage contract between Eugène and Auguste (that of course had been negotiated without them) spoke of the duchy of Parma and Piacenza as her widow’s provision. But there was a problem: By 1808, this duchy had ceased to exist, and the territory had been annexed to France.
I don't think anyone had any illusions about the extent to which Napoleon would hand this territory back now that he had it in his clutches. 😁 Before the “divorce”, however, nobody had paid much attention to that; it was just implied that Eugène would one day be king of Italy, and that one day the Kingdom of Italy would be responsible for the alimentation of its widowed queen.
All of which went out the window as soon as Napoleon withdrew Eugène's status of heir presumptive.
Eugène’s situation remained unclear for several weeks even after Napoleon had given Joséphine the boot. There were some vague plans for a new “principality of Raab” at first (which would probably have been just as unprofitable as most of the territories Napoleon gobbled together for his nobles), but then Napoleon settled for the “grand duchy of Frankfurt” as Eugène’s inheritance.
Just for comparison: The Kingdom of Italy had six million inhabitans. The grand duchy of Frankfurt had 600,000. And Auguste did not like it. As her husband later often said, somewhat apologetically: “She is a princesse. She was taught to consider that kind of things important.” - So please make sure I bring back home something to make her happy. I don’t want to sleep on the couch!
But when we speak about ladies whose financial security was left to chance, we could just as well look at the girl’s grandmother, at empress Joséphine herself. The French constitution said that the emperor would take measures to ensure her alimentation in case she became a widow. Except he never had. That’s what made the negotiations with Eugène - that I so would have loved to overhear - necessary in the first place. If I am not very much mistaken, the only thing Joséphine had in writing were the regulations from her marriage contract in March 1796. Which granted her a pension of 1,500 Francs in case of a separation.
A pension that, for Josephine, might just have lasted until dinnertime on the first day of that separation. 😁 So, in a way the “divorce” negotiations for her went pretty well. Technically, Napoleon could have kicked her out without a penny.
Thanks again for the question, and sorry if I babbled on too much! I’m always so excited to talk about Eugène!
