To the Announcer of The Nightfolk Network. I know in this day and age I should not give out personal information. Especially more so with these correspondence potentially being read to the country. But I feel I should clarify who I am first, as that is linked with my problem. I am, or I was, The Boy in Bronze. Yes, the statue that was in the Royal collection that was discovered to be a person in-cased in bronze as I was released accidentally. I still feel bad for the staff I frightened. As you know, I was sealed by my Mas- I mean, the late Lord Crawford. The inventor and scientist who, as I have learnt through recent education, has been remembered more in infamy. It has been an adjustment. One moment I was standing in the lab as Mas- I mean, Lord Crawford, explained about a work he was to present for Queen Victoria's wedding. The next I was on the ground in a bright place whilst people in unusual garbs were staring. Some holding up these... mirrors? I know they are called smartphones, but it was still confusing. Now, I was helped. Apparently I was not the first person, or entity, to be thrown through time. Though admittedly, my method of travel was unique, I was connected to my many great nephew and his partner? is that the right term? Back then they would have been bachelors. I guess that is some of the main issues I am having. Not with them, no no. Back during the era, the monsters. No, sorry. The Creature Community, wasn't that visible? I mean, people were aware of them, but I never knew them or the terms they have now. And back then, well... it was not a kind time. It was a surprise to learn the old village baker from back then was in the community as I ran into them whilst seeing the village nowadays, though it was nice getting to talk to someone who I knew back then. And I am surprised that after I was gone my family had changed to include Liminal Folks (Is that correct?) and they have been more than kind. My, I hate calling him and his partner nephews as they are older than me, I have taken to calling them uncles as they are older and referring to them as Mister feels... too formal. They have been kind and very forth coming with so much, even when I have made comments that apparently are not... correct, particularly with their Genera, that is the term right? An example would be I never knew there were werewolves who can change not only during the full moon, but even at will, Or that Giants are not blood driven animals only seeking food.

I am sorry. Everything has changed. And I rather like these changes. I just need to try and understand sometimes. Well this is my problem. I know that mas- I mean, Lord Crawford was a horrible man. Even by the standards of the time as he was executed following his grotesque experiments on many both in and out of the Liminal community. And I am not excusing that, far from it. The problem is, people speak to me about him, or how I should feel of him. But. It was different. I was his valet. Lord Crawford had sponsored me, giving my family payment as he had me clothed, educated, and served him. That was how it was back then. An example would be whilst studying for O-level examinations (And can I say how impressive it is that everyone has the access to education) there was mention on figures of the era, and people asked me about my experience living with Lord Crawford, or how as a member of the creature community how I could stand being in his presence back then. I just, how can I explain I am not a member of this community as I am human? How I am not one of Master Crawford's victims and what he had done to me was nothing compared to those he tortured and killed. I mean, being frozen as a statue was not that bad. It may help to understand why others consider you to be a member of the community. The interpretation rests on a rather significant shift in how liminal folk define and discuss themselves since you were last awake.

At the time of your encasement, Darwin's theories of evolution were sending shockwaves through the scientific community, and the dominant framework for understanding liminality was as an evolutionary, biological difference, inherent in certain bodies.

We can still see that framework influencing our language today. We talk about “genuses” as if they represent profound, biological distinctions. But that thinking only takes us so far. In what sense are the risen dead a different genus than their more vital siblings? Is a sapio who becomes haematophagic now a different species, or not?

Currently, the dominant framework for understanding liminality is a great deal broader, and concentrates primarily on experience. A person might consider themselves to be liminal after growing up in a mixed-genus family, for example, even if they themselves were sapio. The same goes for magical practitioners or people who experience liminality as a result of their work.

With all that said, you certainly don't have to ascribe to a liminal identity if you don't find it helpful. Neither do you have to identify as a victim if that word feels inaccurate to your experiences. Other people in your position might describe themselves as “survivors” of magical violence, while others still prefer not to incorporate the experience into their identity at all.

All of these positions are valid, and I encourage you to explore the language that feels right for you. This language might change over time, and that's perfectly alright too. You aren't beholden to anyone to talk about yourself and your experiences in a particular way if you don't want to.

And if you are not beholden to using certain language, you are especially not beholden to feeling certain emotions just because others expect them of you. Nobody can dictate to you how you “ought” to feel about Lord Crawford or his actions.

It is perfectly natural for you to feel conflicted or complicated about your former master's treatment of you. Have you considered talking the matter through with a professional? Our understanding of mental health and well-being have also come a long way since you were last with us, and I think you could really benefit from exploring your feelings more deeply.

Talk to your uncles about accessing some counselling or therapy, and take some time to reflect and consider what language you want to use about yourself. That way, you'll be well-placed to offer a polite correction to people who mistake your identity in the future.

Finally, I would like to push back gently on your assertion that what happened to you was “nothing” compared to the other people Lord Crawford hurt. Suffering is, unfortunately, not a finite resource. There is more than enough to go around. Acknowledging the harm done to you does not diminish the harm done to others – it only does yourself a disservice.

How to keep yourself safe from fear mongering and misinformation.

I know there's a lot of fear mongering out there, which feeds on misinformation and the common anxieties of those who have (or suspect they have) a disorder such as DID/OSDD.

The first rule is of course, do not trust anyone on the internet.

This includes me.

Fear mongering is when someone spreads fear and/or terror. Usually with a hidden agenda, but it can also be spread by those who don't know any better and who have been caught up in the fear. If someone is describing a terrifying situation (especially one that starts out seeming fine, but gradually becomes scarier and scarier until it reaches dystopian proportions), it is likely that it is just a fear mongering tactic. An example of fear mongering is "Gay marriage will lead to adults marrying children!". It usually involves multiple steps, which start out with a grain of truth, but twist the facts or use false equivalencies to make it seem as though their worst-case scenario is a real danger. The aim of fear mongering in this example is to convince people to vote against marriage equality. Inspiring fear in a person can also be used to scam that person. How many times have you heard of someone getting an official-sounding phone call which tells them they will be arrested if they don’t send such-and-such amount of money to them, or if they don’t purchase giftcards and give the codes to the scammer on the phone? It is the initial shock and fear which cause a person to fall for these. Fact checking is vital.

Fear mongering.

- Take a moment to overcome your initial emotional response. You need to be able to think clearly and logically when you are confronted with something that shocks and scares you.  - Try to think about their argument/statement rationally and objectively. Is it likely that in this day and age a therapist would illegally force a treatment on you without informing you of all of the facts about that treatment? Would a mental health professional risk a lawsuit and the loss of their licence by refusing to answer your questions about a treatment that they are insisting on? - Check for sources, and it is very important that you not only READ their sources, but also look for other sources by yourself. The source/s supplied by a fear mongerer will often support their statements and seem fairly convincing, but actually contain very little fact. You need to do an independent search for information which supports their claims, and information which contradicts their claims. If there is no truth to their claims, you will struggle to find reputable sources which support it, and are likely to find many that have evidence showing that the claim is false. (There is of course the chance that something is true but does not have sources for it - eg 50 years ago, there may not have been many official sources supporting the idea that being gay is fine, and there would have been many official sources claiming that being gay was a disease.)

Do not take any one person's word as fact.

- Check for reliable sources that back their statements.

- Look for multiple opinions/input, from a variety of sources. It's no good asking 10 people in the same group for their opinions and then taking it as fact if they all agree. If you are searching for information, you need to take everyone's advice/input/opinion with a grain of salt, and seek a wide variety of people to ask.

- If someone claims that such-and-such is the ONLY possible way to experience something, you should look into why they are claiming that, and what reliable sources they have to back it up.

- If something is really a fact, there will be SEVERAL reliable sources discussing it. Not just one source being reblogged or referenced by multiple other sources.

Check sources.

- Look at whether the person is actually linking the direct source of their "facts" or not. If they are simply claiming that such-and-such says this, or vaguely indicating that a certain government or organisation supports their view... That's not good enough. You will have to actually research it yourself and see whether that is the case or not.

- Be cautious if someone has quoted something but does not tell you where the quote comes from.

- Look at the full quote, not just the part that the person has quoted in their post/statement. It can be easy to take things out of context, and make it seem like the source supports a certain view, when in reality it does not.

- Actually open the links if someone is citing them as a source that supports their statement. It's very easy to assume that because someone has cited multiple sources, that those sources are accurate and relevant. But in reality, it would be quite easy to simply link a bunch of random official-sounding URLs, that actually have nothing to do with it.

Check credentials.

- If someone is claiming to be a therapist, scientist, or anyone working in a medical field, you should not believe them unless you are seeing them in a professional capacity IRL.

- You are

ALWAYS

entitled to see the qualifications of someone who is treating you, whether it is your GP or a mental health professional.

- If someone online is claiming to be a trained mental health professional, but is not treating you in an official arrangement, they should not be giving you in-depth advice or diagnosis.

A mental health professional should always get to know you and your background before giving you advice. THEY WILL NEVER ATTEMPT TO TREAT YOU OR DIAGNOSE YOU WITHOUT ENTERING INTO A FORMAL PATIENT-THERAPIST ARRANGEMENT.

Seek a trusted person to help you fact check if you are having difficulties.

A lot of sources may contain heavily jargoned text, especially when discussing medical conditions/disorders.

Find someone who you know you can trust, and who is willing to admit when they are mistaken. Ask that person to help you.

DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WHO REFUSES TO ADMIT THEIR MISTAKES.

- Watch out for people using gaslighting tactics, or deleting conflicting opinions from their posts. There are some people out there who insist that they are correct, and will refuse to acknowledge any information which contradicts their statements. These people may use gaslighting techniques to supress anyone who tries to question what they've said.

- Any one who is working from a place of good intent, will be open to looking at reliable sources which contradict their statements.

- Similarly, if anyone tries to convince you that you DON’T need to check their sources, or that you can trust them without them providing sources, THIS IS A RED FLAG.

Is it ok to test someone?

In my opinion, when you are searching for accurate information, it is perfectly acceptable to test someone by asking them something you already know the answer to.

For example, when I went to the endocrinologist to talk about HRT, I asked her my most important question and she responded in a way that didn't match what my doctor had said.

So I tested her by asking a question I KNEW the answer to.

She answered incorrectly, and I knew that I would have to work hard to get accurate information out of her.

I will keep on writing this stuff until someone stops me Hillbrow- Berea border Johannesburg. December 1986

During 1985 my family and I were living and working at a  residential farm school at Glen Austin midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa. The school was operated by a charity founded on the educational and social principles of the philosopher Rudolf Steiner and operated as a fairly closed community. 

The director of the school had a moderate and tolerant approach. She became unwell and others, who were stricter on the dogma, took over. In short, when the original director was in charge the place was fun and people were happy. When the blue meanies got the upper hand it became oppressive. I decided it was time to move on. There was no problem with my work, it was a matter of a lack of commitment to some of the very odd ideas which underpinned the running of the place (See Anthroposophy, if you are interested). 

The place gave me a distaste for fanatics. We left  with only a very small amount of money 

I had a British nursing qualification and phoned up the head of nursing at a state psychiatric hospital in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. She gave me an interview the next week. After a year of doing hard manual work with only a monthly pocket money allowance, all I had in the way of clothes was baggy jeans, trainers and T-shirts. My hair was home cut. I could not imagine anyone would employ me looking like that. I was also late for the interview. I had to hitchhike into the city and then find my way across the northern edge to the hospital which was tucked away in a residential area. The first words out my mouth was an apology for how I looked and for being so late. The lady who interviewed me, did not seem phased by any of that and I got the job.

 I was to work there for about eight years and count it as the best place I have ever worked. Incredible opportunities were provided for me. The hospital was linked up to a top-class university (Wits) and the learner culture was rich. I count that interview as one of the luckiest half an hours of my life. A friend at Cresset helped us move our stuff, which only amounted to a few suitcases, to our new home in a district of high rise flats on the edge of Hillbrow in Johannesburg. We were in the Helderberg Building. Twenty storeys high with a view out over the city. We had no furniture at all. I bought two cheap mattresses for the kids and that was our new home... but we did have a swimming pool. Near Christmas, a Jewish charity came collecting door to door. I was not home but they saw how we were living through the open door and rather than asking for money they gave us a generous amount to get us over Christmas and up to my first pay packet from the hospital that I was working at. We somehow survived that first month and then things got a lot better. Six months later we had had a fridge, tables and chairs and everything! 

After rural Glen Austin, Hillbrow was like an overdose of adrenaline. It had been the place where immigrants to the country had been arriving, in waves, for a hundred years. Southern Europeans, Brits, Jews escaping oppression under the Russian empire, lots of Irish and a sprinkling of Czech, Poles. Hungarians. The dark side of this was the levels of criminal violence in the city. I was common to see blood on the pavements as I ran across town to catch the bus to work. Piles of glue-sniffing street children slept in shop doorways every night, and street hold-ups were a constant hazard. One incident sticks in my mind though. 

The Helderberg Building, where we were staying, was surrounded by a low wall and a paved area. On one side of that area was a swimming pool, and the remainder was spotted with palm trees and benches. I regularly got up at 4am to sit, drink coffee and read. One night I heard a commotion out in the streets and went to the window. A black man was running down the street being pursued by white men in a car. There was a lot of screeching of tyres and shouting going on. I watched as the black man ran into the paved area below my window, but seven floors down. He hid behind one of the palms furthest from the gate. Three or four men, armed with handguns, got out of the car and began conducting a search. I could see both sides. The man hiding and the other men searching. As they got closer I could see the man was going to run, which he did. What happened next was really odd and I have never understood it. He ran but then stopped by the wall of the building. The chasers stood in a line and opened fire at the man who then collapsed to the ground. They then walked over and stood him up. He walked away with them in a fairly normal way. They then pushed him into the back seat of the car and drove off. Lots of lights had come on in the buildings surround a park in front of our flats. They then all went off within a minute or so, I guess because the observers had judged the incident over.

I have no idea if this was an incident related to crime or politics, or if the men in the car were police or not. They were not in uniform. What struck me was how suddenly things happened and were over. 

In later years I learnt that a government sponsored death squad was based at the Johannesburg Fort detention centre less than a mile away.

These are my opinions and not everything present is the only qualification to being a hero, simply some I believe are needed. Although to be warned that I will be using various anime’s for reference so possible spoilers ahead!!!

 My Hero Academia is a manga/anime that follows the story of protagonist Midoriya Izuku to become the best hero in the world. Born without powers, or “quirks” in this universe, Midoriya has a chance encounter with All Might, the #1 hero in the world, and later is given All Might’s quirk of incredible super strength that can change whether momentarily.

Facing many villains, Midoriya comes across a prominent hero killer: Stain. Stain kills heroes calling them all “fakes” and believing that All Might is the only worthy “true” villain. Stains ideology, that heroes should help for the good of their heart, is interesting because in a way is true. Uraraka Ochako, a classmate of Midoriya, wants to be a hero for fortune because she wants to pay back her parents for everything. It’s a noble cause in whole especially when told that her parent’s construction company has left them nearly broke).

2. Kindness

Heroes have to be kind because they are celebrities. Just like the real world, fans of celebrities will follow them about anything: what they like, what they dislike, who is cool, who should be hated, etc. Because of this heroes need to express kindness as civilians, many who are learning children, watch them with wide eyes.

Take this at hand: if a hero were to be rude towards a certain group others are inclined to follow hating that group as well. If that group is hated they are isolated, isolation leads to various reactions one which is violence and crime rates increase.

In MHA: Vigilantes there is a group who have criminal backgrounds and one that looks very much like a criminal. The protagonist in that spin-off, Koichi, is kind towards them. His kindness is what ensures they don’t slip back to villainous ways and even helps them open a cafe where other people who appear “villainous” can go in without face of judgment. That act of kindness is a domino effect because that cafe is a safe space for people in that universe who are constantly judged for their quirk or their appearance. If they have a safe space with others who understand they are less inclined to commit crimes and thus reduce criminal rates.

See how kindness pays off in the long run? If heroes show kindness in their own way then others will follow suit and eventually small problems will be resolved without bloodshed or violent conflicts.

3. Strength

Heroes gotta be strong to lift people out of trouble like All Might did during his debut.

Or be able to receive and throw back punches/hits. Though what exactly counts as strength? Plenty of things really but there are three that come to mind: physical, mental and emotional.

Physical strength is covered for and anyone with brains knows a hero has to have some strength to be a good hero. However mental strength is not as well covered yet as essential.

For example, when attempting to revive their dead mother Al, the younger brother, has his entire body taken away and lives solely because of a transmutation circle that was written in Al’s blood in a body of metal armor. Meanwhile Edward, the older brother, has his arm and leg taken away.

Both boys are faced with deep despair. One lost his entire body while the other blames himself for initiating the foolish idea without knowing the full consequences. However, instead of wallowing in despair or doing nothing about it, Edward decides to search for all powerful Philosopher’s Stone that can cast any alchemy without consequences. That ability to bounce back after something heavily traumatizing, and the ability to still help others and keep people safe and put their own mission aside for others, is some next level mental strength.

Other instances of these boy’s mental strengths are tested throughout the anime/manga. There was the time that the Elric Brothers were unable to save a little girl, Nina, in forcefully becoming a chimera by her own father and then later unable to save her from a brutal death.

There was the time Edward was impaled by a metal rod, yet despite bleeding out he moved to save two people who were his former enemy because they were in danger. Another time has Al choosing to give up his hold on the metal body in order to return Ed’s arm and leg to defeat the main villain. There are other instances with other characters in the anime that reveal how strong their mental strength is.

When it comes to mental strength a hero needs it because they need to keep bouncing back no matter what has happened. They cannot allow people to see them defeated or lose hope because if heroes lose hope the people will fall into despair and should they fall into despair society can be thrown into chaos. Not to mention, having the ability to keep level headed while in a stressful situation is a must for heroes otherwise they will be overwhelmed and effectively harmed or killed while in battle. 

The final type of strength is emotion. Emotional strength is the ability to not allow emotions to control a hero’s decision. In some instance that rush of emotion can be useful; ie. Midoriya rushed in to save Bakugou from the sludge villain in MHA.

However if one allows their emotions to control their actions then the feelings such as anger can lead to rash, unthought actions. Take Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan as an example of emotional strength. He would allow his anger to take action and go into a fight without planning ahead. There was a source I once read/heard (and sadly don’t remember where I read/heard it!!) that explained how Eren originally allowed his emotions to control his actions. He would go into fights without planning ahead or cooperating with others but as time went on Eren began cooperating with the people around him in order to effectively take out their enemy with minimal deaths.

One example of Eren allowing his emotions to interfere would be during a scouting mission that involved several soldiers with one squadron of soldiers protecting Eren, the target of the enemy. What occurs during this scouting mission, however, is everyone in that squadron is killed by the enemy, by a female titan. Eren has become familiar with that squadron and while they didn't know each for too long he still got attached. Seeing them die for his sake sends Eren into a rage and decides to fight the female titan instead of running away as instructed.

What ensues from that emotional decision is Eren getting captured by the female titan and almost kidnapped. The only reason Eren has been saved was due to the best fighter arriving on time.

Emotions can be good in some instances, it can push a person past their limits giving them superhuman strength or reflexes, but they can equally harm a person by acting rashly based purely on rage or negativity.

4. Intelligence

 Being strong is not the only thing that makes a hero a hero. Being strong is half of the equation with intelligence being the fall component. If a hero relies only on strength then casualties are through the roof. Heroes need to make strategies, create plans with other heroes and figure out how a villain might move or what their power can be.

Although intelligence can also be used to weed out traitors. Erwin Smith, captain of the scouts in Attack on Titan, is an incredibly intelligent man that the anime gives little credit toward. Admittedly I had not known how intelligent Erwin was until coming across a reddit post  that I will be linking to. Though to sum up what the Reddit post stated one must know the basics of Attack on Titan.

In the Attack on Titan (AoT) universe, a small number of people live behind these walls to keep man eating titans away from them. One day the outer wall falls because a titan taller than ever recorded appears and a titan with armor crashes through the gates that ordinary titian’s cannot break through. Many people die by the protagonist Eren witnesses his mother being eaten by a titan and thus wants to become a Survey Corps soldier to kill titan and avenge his mother.

What comes from this is Erwin believing there are spies within the soldiers of the enemy. Without any prior knowledge Erwin is able to weed out the soldiers to narrow down that the spy is in the Survey Corps, a team that not many soldiers want to join as death rates are the highest there. From there Erwin brings a new round of weeding out who he can trust and who he cannot (the Reddit post explains in detail how Erwin does this). The end regular is Erwin suspecting three members of the Survey Corps who, spoiler alert, are actually the spies.

Erwin deducting and weeding out the spies and the loyal soldiers takes a long process with many acts at play. In one instance Erwin takes away Eren, the target of the enemy, while calling a meeting for the Survey Corps new recruits. The meaning of that meeting was to see who would be there and who would not; if someone were missing then they are the spy because they went to find Eren, however if nobody is gone and no act to kidnap Eren is pulled then that solidifies that the spy is within their ranks. Another instance has Erwin doing background checks on everyone and discovering that three members were in the same town the same day the outer wall had been taken out.

If not for Erwin’s intelligence in believing there are spies and for finding out who it might be the possibility of Eren’s kidnapping would have been higher as well as a higher death rate.

Saving Bakugou from the sludge villain inspires All Might, #1 hero who is on a time limit for how long he can maintain his hero form, to go beyond his limit because he is inspired by Midoriya’s rush to save Bakugou despite having no quirk/power of his own.

Midoriya inspires Todoroki Shouto, so of the #2 hero of Japan, to be a better version of himself after yelling that Todoroki’s other half of his quirk, his flames, is his own power and not his fathers. His father is not Todoroki and will never have control over Todoroki.

Even Midoriya’s homeroom teacher, Aizawa Shouta (Pro hero Eraserhead), told another teacher of another school that his class is constantly being inspired by Midoriya as well as Bakugou.

Inspiration even goes into AoT where Erwin gives a powerful speech to his soldiers inspiring them to ride out knowing fully well they are most likely going to die in the process.
