This Week in BL - All the Penultimate DOOM

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most. (Posted early this week cause I running a seminar all day tomorrow.) 

Ongoing Series - Thai

My School President (Fri YT) ep 8 of 12 - Gun is SO MUCH better at flirting than Tinn. Also Fourth is a killer little actor. GMMTV, man, how do they always find ‘em? The side couple is also getting to be good. Should this show be in the running for 10/10 status? Probably. But it’s never gonna get there because of all the singing. (I gotta stay true to my brand.) 

Never Let Me Go (Tues YT) ep 7 of 12 - I can see why everybody giffed the wrestling on the bed scene. It was v cute and a great opener. I like that the backstory we got was a good explanation for Palm and his father’s extreme loyalty. Fastest proposal to wedding I’ve ever seen. Outside of Vegas, of course. NO SINGING. OK the “this is how couples kiss” kiss was really REALLY good.

Between Us (Sun iQIYI) ep 11 of 12 - Doomy doom doom. Only not. It was more like doom lite. Except for those of use who hate singing. Then it was extra spicy doom torture. And unlike Pete, I do not like it. WATCH ALONG HERE.

609 Bedtime Story (Fri WeTV) ep 10 of 11 - Doomy doom doom, ALSO. GamesVee schilling for marriage equality. Has to happen every single show now? But at crying kiss? YES PLEASE. 6 month time gap. Honestly, WeTV didn’t serve me the first half of the ep this week, and I don’t really care. Apparently it was amnesia. Meanwhile, Mum stepped aside for emotionally immature obsessive sister. And now she’s marrying Dew. Bonkers. I hate this experience. 

Cutie Pie 2 You (special) ep 4fin - And a wedding, and everything sweetness and light, in Korea we are boys do not kiss like that, and the end. Honestly we didn’t really need this special, but I’m not upset about it. 7/10 RECOMMENDED BUT ONLY IF YOU’VE SEEN THE SERIES 

I Will Knock You (Fri Gaga) ep 11 of 12 - Doomy doom doom only pulp style. The parents, understandably, do not approve. Noey’s plans for the future are kind of cute. He’s such a baby. 

Hit Bite Love (Sat YouTube) ep 1 of 6 - Opens with a bj. That’s certainly novel. Honestly? This is giving me So Much in Love meets Club Friday vibes. Which is not a good thing. But starting with secret lovers (Ken & Shokun) breaking up is at least different. There is also a cute new kid in a friends-to-lovers geeky thing happening (King & Burger). Subs are TERRIBLE. But my Thai is good enough now for me not to mind as much as I once did. Do I like this show? Noo…oo? But I’m gonna keep watching it. I have a pretty high tolerance for Thai pulps. After all, I’m one of the few people on the planet who actually watched So Much in Love. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

The New Employee (Korea Weds Viki) ep 6 of 8 - Criminal how utterly gay and cute they are. Matching pajamas indeed. ALSO honorifics discussion!!!! Yay! (There was seal clapping on this side of the screen.) “Do you want to see my cat?” is a great pick up line. It would totally work on me. To be fair, “do you want to see my dog” would also work. Always been an equal opportunity player.

HIStory 5: Love in the Future (Taiwan Weds Viki) ep 5 of 10 (or 9&10 of 20) Wynn in the icebox = such an old-school trope, it’s practically kidnapping for love. Pouty McHotterton remains regrettably evil and should have been fired. Vincent is too nice for his own boy’s good. Then... random confession time! I guess extreme cold makes people brave/drunk? But why didn’t he take him to the hospital to get treated for hypothermia? I’m so confused. Still these office boys are so cute and sincere and awkward. They’re killing me  The other two are basically a married odd couple. Rich boy just wants to be looked after and coddled and spoiled. Jonny is very daring but also acts unconsciously and on pure instinct. I kind of like their dynamic. It’s sort of teasing, and cool, and modern. 

Candy Color Paradox AKA Ameiro Paradox (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 8 - Kenta  domination continues. Of course my beloved charismatic boy ends up being complex but evil. Could I just get a wholesome age gap BL starring him now, please? I’m not picky. He’d be GREAT in Our Dining Table... just saying. Sorry, distracted. Back to the main couple... they’re pretty I suppose. I do like how huggy they are.  Also, multiple kisses. What is this world coming to? All very unusual in JBL.

Individual Circumstances (Korea Thurs Viki) ep 3-4 of 8 - The stalking continues, and it’s boring. Korea doesn’t have any excuse to be boring, they don’t have enough time to spend on it in a BL. Stalker gets sick. Shocker. It’s a BL + rain. Still I’m very grateful that they take every opportunity to make Mr. Korean International shirtless. For science and the good of BL, we salute you! Frankly, I have no idea what’s going on. Did they actually have a relationship in the past? Or was it closeted? Or did one of them think they were in a relationship but not the other? On a different note and wat more important to me? I want the actor playing the agent to star in his own BL. He v adorbs. 

It’s Airing But I’m Not Watching It

GMMTV’s Midnight series (Weds YT)  - first segment has begun bit it’s not the EarthMix messy gays. I’m so not interested in messy hets, so I’m waiting until they grace my screen. Moonlight Chicken 1 of 8 - eventually.  

Gossip

Earth giving us, in one single photo shoot on Cooheart IG, what Unforgotten Night couldn’t manage in an entire fucking series. 

I read the first installment of the Semantic Error manwha (available in English translation legally). It’s similar to the show, although not exactly the same. Some scenes are in different orders etc. There’s not much of the story in the first installment, and I don’t think it was worth the money. The art was fine, pretty typical of the genre, nothing to really recommend it or stand out from the pack. If it did nothing else, it made me realize how much the Parks brought as their roles, because as manwha characters they did not resonate with me at all and came off as pretty flat. Brutal assessment, I know. You thought I was a harsh BL critic, I’m 1000x worse to books.

Headcanon A (realistic): While he's a "changed man" he still struggles with his morals a lot. As much as Raz helped him, no-one's going to change completely overnight, and so he still struggles with old, bad habits and generally still being mean. Even when he genuinely tries to do something good, he might not know the best way of doing it.

Headcanon B (hilarious): He is an absolute fashion disaster. He wears what is comfortable without any regard whatsoever for what actually looks good. He does prefer his lab coat, but if he has to wear anything else he'll just throw on the ugliest bullcrap that is comfortable. He's perfectly happy wearing skirts and dresses as they have a similar feeling to his lab coat. (He used to dress fairly reasonably, but after being admitted to Thorney Towers and having to wear uncomfortable things like strait jackets, he threw all sense of fashion out the window. Is it comfortable? GOOD ENOUGH.)

Headcanon C (ANGST): Post-Rhombus of Ruin, he feels terribly, terribly conflicted about his showercap. It provides him some amount of protection from psychic powers and it was a gift from his mother! But... after coming to terms with what his parents did to him, he hates thinking about the fact that his showercap is associated with his mother. It's a reminder of what he went through, of how terrible his parents were, of his mother who did not care if he died or not. But at the same time, without the showercap, he feels vulnerable. His scalp is riddled with scars. He doesn't like seeing it in the mirror. But when he sees himself in the mirror with the showercap... It's very emotionally complicated for him, but after a long while he ultimately decides to wear it in spite of his mother. Maybe he modifies it slightly more to make it something more his own, or adding more patches to it, but whether he changes it or not, he does keep it.

Headcanon D (probably doesn't 100% fit canon but I dON'T CARE): I know Tim said that Loboto doesn't actually know a lot about teeth, but... I kinda just like to think more that he does, it's just he learned it all on his own since he never got a formal degree or license, so his methods are a bit nonstandard. And also that he just got way more deranged after becoming a patient at Thorney Towers because screw everything if they're gonna take away his (fake) license no matter what he does then he might as well do whatever he wants, and pulling teeth is pretty fun...

Lucrecia Mux

Headcanon A (realistic): While obviously she was close to all the Psychic 7, I like to think she bonded with Cassie a lot. Going from Raz's interactions with the mental figure of Lucy in Cassie's mind, Cassie just seemed... very confused and hurt by what Lucy had become, and saw her has "the nicest person" during her time in the Gulch. Yes, Cassie was mad at the hydraulic mining thing and also saw Lucy as being "too busy making goo-goo eyes at Ford" but I kinda feel like the latter was a lot of retrospect, still sorta projecting her present hurt onto the past. People are complicated, of course. Regardless, I think Lucy and Cassie both connected over a lot of things, one being that they were both women who had to flee their home countries for different reasons. No one else in the Psychic 7 had that experience, so it was something  they both understood each other about.

Headcanon B (hilarious): She is an absolute Agent of Chaos and gets a kick out of shocking people by saying wild things. Sometimes those things are true, sometimes they're blatant lies, but sometimes the truths are so wild and the lies are so mundane that no one really knows what's true and what's not. Was she telling the truth about the Wet Wanda thing? Goodness knows. This also extends to just loving to see Ford get flustered over things.

Headcanon C (ANGST): She did not immediately go from being Maligula to thinking she was Marona. When Ford first locked away Maligula, he "had [his] Lucy back," which I take to mean that for a moment after that, she was herself again. And she saw herself in the safety of Green Needle Gulch with Ford in front of her, and sank into his arms, crying with relief and then saying something to the effect of "Oh Crully, I just had the worst nightmare..." And Ford just... looked at her, horrified and distressed, and realization hit her and she grabbed him by the shoulders, begging him to tell her that she didn't kill her sister, even if everything else had happened, please tell her she didn't kill her sister. Marona is still alive, right? Right? She didn't kill her sister, right? And... he couldn't say anything, and it hit her all over again what she'd done, and it started to storm, and Maligula nearly broke free all over again. Ford, in desperation, told her his terrible plan, and Lucy, too grief-wrecked to think clearly, agreed to it. Anything to forget, anything to keep it from happening again.

... Can you tell this is a scene I've mulled over in my head a lot.

Headcanon D (probably doesn't 100% fit canon but I dON'T CARE): Okay honestly there's not much I can think of with Lucy that would be contradict canon, I don't think? Other than I do not hold to the 20 years thing, and see it as closer to 30 years, but even with that, it's not hard to read canon in a way that makes sense. Like, with folks saying "20 years" as a very rounded figure. But that's the closest I can think of for that one, really.

me constantly going in the CV tag despite knowing that it's 10% nice game fanart, 40% gifs of the show, and 50% some absolute braindamaging takes, is taking a toll on me

because after blocking the nth post admiring Lenore for playing Hector like a fiddle/saying Hector deserved to be enslaved for his original plan of culling mankind (nvm that babyboy Isaac was far more evil about it and he never got punished for wanting to "purify" the world)...

... I really want to think about Lenore and how I'd make her work with the crumbs that the show gave me lol

Lenore is obviously meant to be a parallel to Hector. Both of them are the animal lovers of their group, and mocked for it. Both of them are the "nice" ones in a group where cruelty reigns. Both of them are the least respected of their group - Dracula and Isaac shitting on Hector vs. Striga and Morana not even thinking about Lenore when they peace out. Both of them got used then discarded - yes, even Lenore, who became useless after enslaving Hector. Both of them are actually more of a threat than they look (allegedly, in Hector's case, but I can tell the intention was there).

Then there's the way they contrast. Lenore is a vampire who still clings on vestiges of humanity: she likes to eat food ("why live forever, if you're not going to live well?"), she rejects brute violence (again, allegedly) in favor of the more human art of diplomacy, she's compassionate about lesser creatures (humans included), and she's horrified at the realization that she is, deep down, nothing more than a greedy beast destined to crave more and more. Hector is a human alienated by humanity, who thinks culling is the kindest option, relates more to animals than his own species, and seems fascinated by the nature of vampires.

Imagine if the two actually bonded over this, and betrayed their "factions" because finally they found someone who respects them. And I mean organically bonded. On screen. With dialogue. Without the gross BDSM petplay. That part 100% has to go, it adds nothing, it's humiliation for humiliation's sake, it ruins Lenore's character, and it's just masturbation fuel.

I'd also change the scene where Lenore beats Hector. In my idea, Lenore flees from Hector's clutches, and then doesn't visit him again... for a week... and leaves him without food and water. By the time she comes back, Hector is desperate and is not above begging for some water, but she doesn't want to come close. "Are you going to hurt me again? :< you hurt me the last time :< you're so scary :< I did nothing to you and you tried to kill me :< I'm afraid that you'll do it again :<"

Basically, treating Hector like a rabid dog until he genuinely apologizes, and not only he learns the lesson that he shouldn't attack the only vampire who visits him, but he feels actually guilty and a terrible person about it. Made worse by how sensitive Hector probably is about all of this, as a love-starved abused child.

You know, manipulation, not just a brute display of strength to admire how stronk the girlboss is.

I don't know how their relationship would go from here, though. I only know that I'm more than happy with Lenore sunning herself: it is thematically coherent for her, her refusal to become like Carmilla, her guilt for hurting Hector, and if the two actually cared for each other, her choice to look at the only man who treated her with respect rather than the sun would be lovely.

Needless to say, we can only get here if she organically grows fond of him and doesn't rape him :^) but if she does, if she's really so cruel to hurt a man at his most vulnerable just to do what her sisters asked of her, then the story should treat her as such - and I'd also love to see Hector just snap, because by this point he's sick and tired of being seen as an object. Give him his big moment of taking down both vampires who hurt him. (in my vision not only he smashes Lenore's skull with his hammer, but he also takes a swing at Isaac - not killing him, just hurting him a little. please)

But I'd rather avoid that. I would like both characters to have agency - not even falling in love with each other, I don't care about that (they'd never be a cute couple anyway, not when she starts out as his jailer), just have a more interesting relationship built on two kindred spirits finding each other, but driven apart by their roles and nature. The vampire chooses death, the human grows and thrives.

There is sadly not going around the fact that Hector fell for two vampires (three if you count Dracula, but I can forgive that one) who employed the same strategy. I don't like the way Carmilla uses Hector either, but I can't be bothered to fix her rn.

Ruvik, Karl and the daemon bastard husband Ardyn 😂💙

Was gonna add video clips of my favorite moments, but you can only do one per post, so the rest are gifs 😭😭

Ruvik

First impression: Woah, who is this guy, and why is he so powerful? Is he a demon? A vengeful spirit? I am very intrigued.

Impression now: Oh god he’s tragic. OH GOD HE’S TRAGIC.

Favorite moment: In the first Kidman DLC, The Assignment, Ruvik has some absolutely spectacular dialogue with her and Leslie at the very end, after cornering them in the church. It gives me chills every time and the delivery is perfect.

“We’re all their pawns, eventual victims.

They killed me! They ripped me apart, and took what they needed.

I will destroy what they wish to control.”

The elevator scene with Sebastian is also great, but man this one is just sublime in every way.

Idea for a story: I’ve been playing with the idea for a x Reader fic with him, one in which they essentially kill him with kindness. He hasn’t experienced kindness or affection since the accident, so I’m excited to explore his character dealing with someone who doesn’t immediately find him repulsive or isn’t intimidated by him. There will also be lots of bumbling on his end, cause even though he’s smart af, he doesn’t know the first thing about relationships 😂

Unpopular opinion: He deserves compassion, and hating him is extremely shortsighted. Yes, he did terrible things, no one is debating that, but choosing to ignore the broken pieces of his humanity left in the game is being deliberately obtuse. Not saying you shouldn’t or can’t hate him, but it shouldn’t be without acknowledging his trauma. And putting others down for not hating him is downright juvenile.

Favorite relationship: I’m all about that self ship, which is probably his best bet at getting any romance, based on being…well, a serial killer. Some of my friends have shown me Ruvik x Stefano though, and that relationship would be interesting to say the least 😆

Favorite head cannon: Touch starved af and craves affection. Although touch starved is basically cannon, I think he also deeply craves some kind of connection with someone. He lost everyone he cared about; his sister died in the fire, his parents locked him in a basement, his research partner betrayed him, which lead to his death (the one he’s discussing in the above quote). I head cannon he longs for someone he can trust, really trust, and anguishes over his loneliness.

Moving on…

Karl Heisenberg

First impression: I hadn’t played the game, but I’d seen pictures of him. For some reason I thought he was the main villain, and was working with Chris to make the main character help him (no fucking clue how I arrived here 🤣🤣). Thought he was some big, gruff man who didn’t talk much and smiled even less. Why does he look like Ardyn?

Impression now: LMAOOO THIS DUDE IS A MASSIVE TROLL AND I AM SO HERE FOR IT 😂😂😂 I could not have been more wrong about him (or the plot, still not sure how I got there). He’s funny and I love his smile, and how much of a tool he is. I must say, I did not expect his voice to sound the way it does, but I’m not complaining 🥰

Favorite moment: Why isn’t there more of him why isn’t there more WHY ISN’T THERE MORE??? Anyway, probably when he tries to convince Ethan to work with him.

“Neither did I! But here we are.

And I’m next in line, right? Kill me, move up the chain!

Well, fuck that!”

Idea for a story: I’ve already mentioned I got something cookin in the old noggin, but I have more details on what I want to happen now, so I’ll be happy to share them! Surprise surprise, it’s x Reader, where they’re a botanist sent to survey the remote mountains of Romania. Collect data on the plants there for the university they work at, along with two colleagues who are cartographers, going to update outdated maps of the area. They get captured and typical RE shenanigans ensue, but I also want reader to be connected to Umbrella somehow, which I hope you can help me with. I want Miranda to know too, so she starts sending reader to all the Lords to see what happens. Little does she know reader starts to osmose some of all their powers, turning into something far more dangerous than she could’ve imagined.

That’s all I got for now, no more spoilers! Unless you want them 😉

Unpopular opinion: He has more respect for his partners than some of you seem to think. I’ve read plenty of stories where Karl is super hands on with his partner, slapping their ass and manhandling them all the time, sometimes hours after meeting them. Not my fuckin Heisenberg. He keeps his hands to himself, unless he has explicitly gotten permission to do any touching. Honestly wish some of y’all would tag your stories when you make him all grabby, it’s kinda triggering for me.

Favorite relationship: My first answer is going to be x Reader for all of these, I’m a sucker for the stuff. Although Karl x Ethan sounds endlessly amusing to me. Karl would be the puppy bouncing around everywhere while Ethan would brood in a corner 😂

Favorite head cannon: Extremely sensitive to trauma responses, and is good at comforting, due to the things Miranda did to him. He doesn’t want anyone he likes to know what that helplessness or fear feelings like.

Last, but the farthest thing from least…

Ardyn Izunia Lucis Caelum

First impression: I knew he was the villain before I started the game, but that’s all I knew. Thought he was funny as I actually got into the game, and why the hell is he everywhere??

Impression now: GREEK PLAY LEVEL TRAGIC HERO AND MY HEART ETERNALLY ACHES FOR HIM. Seriously, they did NOT need to fuck Ardyn up so much, there’s plenty of shit that happened to him that could make someone a villain by itself. But the gods and Squenix said ‘fuck this guy in particular’. I thought y’all called him ‘trash Jesus’ cause he looks like the guy, but NOOOOO there’s actually fucking parallels between the two. The healer, the betrayal, the crucifixion…not exactly subtle when you take the time to look. Aside from all that, I still love how funny he is, he always makes me laugh (when he’s not making me cry), and he’s super smart. Plus, I will always admire how he made it so he wins no matter what happens in the end. That takes some galaxy brain level planning.

Favorite moment: Imma let it speak for itself;

“You think ten years is a long time? It is nothing to me!

I have lived in darkness for AGES!”

God, the fucking level of emotion absolutely dripping from that last word kills me very time. Darin de Paul did excellently with Ardyn’s lines up until that point, but this one hits differently. The sheer anguish and sorrow you can hear in his voice is breathtaking. Made worse when you realize he’s being literal…he has spent actual ages locked in a dark cell. Words can’t properly give it credit.

Idea for a story: yall chapter 11 of ADCT is gonna be like 10k+ words 😂😂 Not done yet and it’s already at 7k lol. Hope that makes up for the 6 month hiatus 😵‍💫 Aside from that though, I have another idea for a long fic, albeit a shorter one. Where reader gets washed up on Angelgard before Verstael, and is horrified to find Ardyn strung up on the island. After freeing him, they have to work together to try to survive, figuring out how to get food, water, and fight off hypothermia. Verstael eventually arrives, and takes both of them back to Niflehiem.

Unpopular opinion: Most handsome character in FFXV by a long shot. He’s in space.

Favorite relationship: Apart from x Reader, I’m boring for this one. Ardyn x Aera, they’re so sweet and cute together. Forever bitter Ardyn didn’t get to reunite with her at the end. I know some people dig Ardyn x Gilgamesh, but meh, it’s just not for me. Hope y’all who do like it have fun with it though 😁

Favorite head cannon: Absolute teddy bear with his SOs, fucking bastard troll man with everyone else. Dynamic is super fun and amusing to me, I love the thought of him being a bean one moment then turning around and roasting Ravus with political talk the next. Oh, I also love the thought that he has a massive sweet tooth. Since his hair didn’t grow at all during his time on Angelgard, I like to think his body is in some kind of stasis, that it can’t be changed, and Ardyn takes full advantage of that. He’s got at least three different types of cake in his fridge, and several pints of ice cream in the freezer. He also keeps candy bars in his desk.

Eiji: You know, since some time had most likely passed between your crime and you being brought here, like, maybe two days or three, maybe even more..

Eiji: It's possible that literally anyone's crime here was already talked about in the news or anywhere else and it just wasn't solved.

Akio: .. I remember people talking about it a lot.

Akio: I refused to watch TV after everything happened and I don't really use social media, so.. I don't know if they've ever mentioned the victim's name.

Akio: Though they most likely have.

Miki: So.. Will you tell us his name?

Miki: I promise, we will leave soon after that. 

Miki: N-not right after that, but still..

Akio: ...

Akio: Fine. Whatever. There's no point in trying to keep it secret anyway.

Akio: .. Kitami Chise.

Eiji: "Wait, he actually agreed to tell us his victim's name?!"

Eiji: "This kid really is not doing well.."

Miki: Thank you so much for telling us his name, Miyagawa-san.

Miki: If you're not comfortable with talking about him, we can go back to talking about your accomplice- Saito-san, I mean.

Miki: I promise we won't ask you anything after that.

Akio: .. Fine.

Miki: So.. why did Saito-san agree to kill someone with you? Or.. for you?

Eiji: Was he in love with you or something-

Akio: .. He was just really loyal to me, that's all. He was basically obsessed with me.

Eiji: Oh, so I was right.

Miki: So he just agreed to do it? Or did it take some time for you to convince him?

Eiji: I just wonder how the idea of murder has crossed your mind. Like, did you really hate the poor kid that much?

Akio: O-of course, I did. I hated him. I genuinely wanted him to die.

Akio: It's like I had no choice but to hate him.

Miki: .. What does that mean?

Akio: I-it just means that I would've never been able to like someone like him, t-that's all.

Akio: And, uh, about that conversation I've had with Arata..

Akio: .. It wasn't supposed to be murder at first.

Miki: ...

Eiji: .. Huh?

Akio: I was just joking around at first. Like, "Hey, can you help me out with something? What if we killed that guy together just because he annoys me so much? Come on, I know you like me!"

Akio: And, uh.. 

Akio: He took it seriously. 

Akio: And I just.. went along with it. He told me everything will be fine, he won't be in any pain and no one will find out. He told me my life will be so much more peaceful after this, I won't even remember anything.

Eiji: ".. How did Akio end up as a prisoner instead of him?"

Eiji: "I mean, it makes sense and Milgram is never wrong, Akio was the one who suggested it, but.."

Eiji: "No, I shouldn't think about it too much. If he's the prisoner, there was a reason for bringing him here."

Akio: So I just.. I guess I did come up with everything at first, since I also was the one who chose the murder method. But Arata was the one who actually did it.

Eiji: "Never mind, there really was a reason for bringing him here."

Akio: Actually.. Maybe I never meant it as a joke.

Akio: Maybe I wanted to kill that guy from the start. 

Eiji: And.. How did the murder go?

Akio: Well, he died.

Eiji: Of course he did.

Miki: How did you feel after you two were done?

Eiji: I bet you felt relieved, didn't you?

Akio: .. I don't know. 

Akio: I left as soon as we were done.

Eiji: .. What?

Eiji: I guess it makes sense, I can't imagine a guy like you helping with hiding the body, but still..

Miki: .. Did you regret it, Miyagawa-san?

Akio: No, I still think he deserved it.

Akio: That guy.. he ruined everything.

Akio: I just wanted to be loved by my classmates, is that too much to ask for?

Eiji: Oh, you didn't want to be loved by them. You wanted to be worshipped by them.

Eiji: You already had a guy who was okay with literally killing someone for you and that still wasn't enough. 

Akio: .. Heh, you're right. I guess I really got too greedy.

Miki: Miyagawa-san, do you still think you were in the right?

Akio: Of course I was! He deserved to die! Nobody would have missed him anyway, so..

Akio: .. *sobs*

Eiji: Now, if you think this is gonna make us feel sorry for you-

Akio: I just don't get it.. That guy's grades were nothing compared to mine..

Akio: He was such an idiot.. He never understood anything the teachers said..

Akio: Why.. did they like him more than me?

Akio: H-hey.. I'm still smart, right? I'm still a genius, right?

(bell rings, machinery sounds)

Akio: Please, answer me.

Eiji: It's time for us to extract your video. Hope you're ready for that.

Miki: Y-you passed out the last time we did this to you though.. 

Miki: (to Eiji) Eiji-san, are you sure his body can handle this? He looks so weak..

Eiji: Well, if it can't, that's his problem. We still have to do it.

Akio: I-I'm still smart, right?..

Eiji: Listen, have you ever thought that those kids liked the other guy more not because he was smarter than you, but because he was kinder than you?

Eiji: Sure, maybe his grades were bad, but at least he didn't treat his classmates like his servants.

Akio: ...

Eiji: Leave him alone. Let him think about it.

[ MV Description ]

The video starts with Akio waking up in a classroom and this scene has After Pain vibes at first, but when Akio opens his eyes and looks around, he sees that the whole classroom is on fire. He panics and tries to leave, but then he sees a note on his desk and reads it. He hesitates for a moment, but decides to take it with him and leaves the classroom. 

"Ah, look at this, don't you think I deserve it?

That's what they all say, well, I have to disagree

I should've listened to you, I know

I want to say something like "Don't get too proud", but fine, you win this time"

When he leaves, he sees that his classmates are standing in the next room and there's no fire at all. The room looks completely white and this time we can actually see his classmates and they're not just silhouettes like in his first MV. Akio sees that some of his classmates are crying, some of them are shocked, some of them just can't believe that all of this is happening and he notices that they're actually standing in front of the picture of his victim. We can see his victim well and it appears to be a blond boy his age with light skin, freckles and dark pink eyes.

"Can't you all stop pretending already?

I know you'll cry for a day and forget about him right after that

Ah, look at this, don't you think he deserved it?

That's what they want to disagree with"

When Akio sees the photo, he tries to quietly walk away, but a female classmate notices him and points at him, making everyone else turn to him as well. Akio starts running away, but right when he thinks that he's not being followed, his classmates find him and he ends up being beaten by them. 

"Come on, fight me, punch me, beat me to death,

Show me how you've really felt about me all this time

There's no one left to support me, no one left to call me "Your Majesty"

I guess it's time for me to admit my defeat" 

As he starts to lose consciousness and closes his eyes, when he opens them, he sees that now he's locked in some kind of dungeon. The school theme of the MV changes to the royal one. 

A couple of his classmates are dressed as knights now and they let him out, but they make him go somewhere, telling him that someone is waiting for him. 

"Wait, are you telling me there's a chance that this can be fixed?

Is there a chance of me getting saved?

I knew you will help me again, just like you always do"

He realizes what they mean by that and his face lights up. He gets so excited that he runs there himself without any "help" from his classmates.

He opens the doors and everything looks much brighter and more beautiful now. The colors are mostly white and golden. He sees a figure with dark purple hair standing in the middle of the hall, his back turned to Akio. 

"As always, you're here to rescue your king, aren't you?

I can't believe you're still so loyal to me

I promise, I'll thank you properly, so just help me out this one time"

Akio looks very happy to see that person and he runs to them. He reaches out his hand to them and the video gets even brighter, but then the figure turns to him, revealing himself to be his accomplice Arata and he doesn't look happy to see Akio at all. 

"Ah yes, I forgot that you were the one who had ruled this place before me"

Before Akio can say anything, the setting changes again and now he's about to be executed in the same way his victim was executed in the first MV: he's about to get hanged. 

Akio gets more and more nervous and then he sees Arata in the crowd and tries to beg him for help, but he looks away and ignores him, even though it's painful for him as well. 

"Come on, I know you still love me

Why can't you save me this time too? 

I can see the tears on your face

Don't look away from me, don't ignore my cries"

Akio also notices his own victim in the crowd, but he has a completely different face expression from the picture that was showed before: his eyes are empty, he isn't smiling at all and he has noticeable dark red marks on his neck. As the blond boy touches his neck, the marks get even more red and bloody and the blood gets on his fingers as well. 

We see Akio about to be executed again and the video abruptly ends..

Except it doesn't.

Right after the sudden pause and the black screen, Akio opens his eyes again and we see everything from his POV. 

Everything looks more distorted and glitchy now, but we can't hear the song anymore. We can only hear Akio struggling to breathe, him slowly choking and the sounds of his heartbeat. He keeps looking for someone, but then he sees that both Arata and his victim are no longer there and the video ends with him slowly closing his eyes and his heartbeat stopping.

almost every character on this show sucks. welcome to the point. it seems you've been missing it this whole time.

homelander is the most talked about character on the show. dude is a fan favorite. universally praised. and he is the worst of the worst. a heinous villain with an uncomfortable milk fetish. people like him because he is a bad guy. because that’s fascinating to watch. because the performance is incredible. 

if you can understand that but can't understand why people want to see more of soldier boy, why they find him fascinating, why they want to talk about him, then you're just a bitter hypocrite and that's your problem. not ours.

if you are someone who thinks liking villains is morally wrong, no exceptions, and everyone who does is somehow an awful person then i'm going to go out on a limb and say maybe this isn't the show for you.

also, as a final point - and kind of an important one - this is fiction. it's fictional. it's a television show. it's all fake. people can like any character they want. because they're characters. they're not real. sorry to break it to you. hate that you had to find out this way.

These two are just too cute to handle. I loved their flirty moments at the bar and OCs comparison of Taehyung as delicate and Namjoon as steady was so insightful. I'm glad she recognized the parallels between what Taehyung is doing with her and what she is doing with Namjoon. If only Taehyung would spend some time on inward reflection like that! I am nervous about the conversation Kris suggested she have with him...

I also forgot to mention in my last post how much the conversation in Part IV between Namjoon and OC about her parents struck a chord with me. Meeting new people and having to navigate the lost parent issue. Trying to figure out whether it's worth saying what happened and bringing down the whole mood or just kind of glossing over when people ask about my parents. Then having to manage the other person's guilt for having brought it up. Ugh it's the fucking worst and the way you described OCs inner thought process was so true to my experience. It makes me feel seen when other people can understand how painful those moments can be, so thank you for writing it.

Solaris reviews The Great Zoo of China, by Matthew Reilly (2015)

Ugh.

Content: Oh my gods was this book a trainwreck. Shoddy science, bland characterisation, poor writing - this book's got it all, folks.

Who I think would like it: I guess if you don't care about the science (or don't know it - no judgment there), and if you enjoy the author's writing style - many people apparently do, as he's an international best-seller - then go for it. You could also potentially get a bit of a laugh out of it.

Things it does well: The action was easy to follow, and I will say this: the book was memorable. I remembered actions and events pretty well. I also found I got through it surprisingly quickly (when I dedicated time to read it) - I'd go back to refer to an earlier bit I'd read and found I'd gotten through several pages at a time. Not gonna lie folks I had to think hard to come up with something for this section

Things that could be improved: I mean... -gestures vaguely at four posts worth of excerpts I shared- This book thinks italicised text and exclamation points are substitutes for good writing and as a result, every action scene - which make up a good 70% of the book - fell flat for me. I forgot who everyone was, except for CJ and her brother Hamish, the moment they were introduced. The writing is weak, shoddy, borderline insulting in places (seriously, if you're going to define something as forty feet deep, you do not also need to tell us it is four storeys deep, or vice versa). The science is a mess. Even if you're not educated in palaeontology or evolution, the notion that eggs could survive 65 million years is a slap in the face to clever writing and audience intelligence. Furthermore, the notion that dragons the world over just so happen to look similar to how Tolkein envisioned them is so patently false that it's utterly ridiculous. Everything, from the science to basic facts about the various dialects of Chinese to various dragon myths around the world, is so wrong, so off-base, that I wonder how terribly sheltered Reilly must be to have zero exposure to anything outside his little sphere.

My review: What can I say about this book that I haven't already? If you want a well-researched, action-packed story that also serves as a meditative treatise on the wisdom of resurrecting prehistoric creatures and then containing them in a zoo, this book is not for you. However, if you want a light read where you can turn your brain off and read about some action and death at the hands of impressive giant monsters...this is also not the book for you. I've referenced Jurassic Park quite a bit when talking about this book, but Ian Malcolm summed up my thoughts on it best:

Does this book have…: ✅= yes ❓= not sure ⭕= possibly/mixed ❌= no Romance? ❌ At the very end, one character kisses CJ's cheek and asks if they can go to coffee. A paragraph on the final page mentions that they visit occasionally. You could easily miss it entirely. Sex? ❌ No on-screen sex or masturbation or implied off-screen sex or masturbation. There's maybe one or two references to clubs where stripping or sexy dancing might happen, but it's confined to a line or so. Racism? ✅ It's more startlingly ignorant than actively malicious (at least for the most part), but there's a lot of sinophobia in this book. While there are many valid criticisms to be made of the Chinese government, Reilly goes far beyond any of them. One of my friends pointed out that the way Lucky the dragon speaks is uncomfortably close to racist stereotypes of East Asian people speaking English, and when the book isn't being outright contemptuous or ignorant of China and its people, it's heavily exoticising it in a way that's odd and almost uncomfortable to read (think of that passage about how amazing it was that Chinese people built a city, no really, it's absolutely stunning that they put together a collection of buildings when it was needed folks). It also drops the term "Chinaman" at one point, which I'm leery of given how the author treats Chinese characters in the rest of the book. Sexism? ✅ CJ is Not Like The Other Girls, folks. The best I can say is that no character, including CJ, is well-defined enough to fall into many of the typical #MenWritingWomen problems, but it's still not good. LGBTQIA-phobia? ❌ Ableism? ✅ ⭕ A character gets called a "sociopath" (or maybe psychopath, tbh I don't fully remember as most people use the terms as interchangable insults) early on. The descriptions of CJ's scars, and the negative attention laid on them, can be read as ableist in places. Swearing? ✅ Constantly. Even when my brother was an edgy teenager he didn't swear as much as this book did. Drug/Alcohol references? ❓ I think there's some references to alcohol sprinkled throughout, but it's more references to bars and bartenders. I don't recall any characters actually drinking in the book. References to or actual violence or suicide? ✅ Lotsa violence, lotsa gore. You'll read gross descriptions of organs outside the body and people dying in brutal ways. References to or actual animal death or cruelty? ✅ Oh yes. So much animal abuse happens in this book. Plus it ends with almost all the dragons dying.

[Note: this is about hypnokink and it is fictional, but it's not a piece of erotica. It is a story about the importance of aftercare and ongoing consent check-ins, both for the subject/hypnotee and for the hypnotist. Because it illustrates that importance through demonstrating the potential consequences, take care when reading if you have yourself experienced anything like that. (Re-)Introductions

Hello everyone! I'm Mark. I'm a hypnotist, hypnoswitch, hypnokink content creator and safety and consent advocate in the hypnokink space. That means that I do a lot of work to expose and push back against the bad actors in our community. By bad actors I mean people who knowingly abuse consent, ignore boundaries, mistreat their partner(s) and damage their mental health, and things of that nature. I distinguish that from people who are ignorant of the same things, which is less bad, more fixable, but still problematic. When I am not doing those things, which are decidedly Not Fun and which I don't enjoy (but enjoy the alternative even less), I'm usually writing stories about hypnokink. These days I don't do a whole lot of hypnokinky play with people, but I do value it when I get the chance. More on that later.

Outside of our funny little corner of the internet, I'm a scientist (specifically a molecular biologist, though now I work in other areas of public health), gamer nerd (TTRPGs of all kinds since ~1991, video games of many kinds but mostly on computer not consoles, Wargames like 40K and One Page Rules, and other assorted whatnot), and progressive activist (yes I can happily insert just about every slogan and buzzword here you can imagine but I'd rather you just ask if you want to know).

Something you can do for me, for you

This is one small favor that you can do for me, and that will help you as well, and that will help the community as a whole. That is, it helps everybody all around. Everybody wins. It's not even all that difficult.

Some time in this next week, reach out to someone you haven't before and say "hello." Or, post this to your blog to show that you are open to someone else doing the same.

This is not with the intent of making a new hypno partner or meeting a new hypnotist, or anything like that, but of making a new friend in the community. Of, simply, introducing yourself. Ask them (or when asked, say) how they're (you're) doing. Ask them about their day. Ask them about their interests and let them talk. Make a new contact, a new connection, a new friend. If I have a free moment (it is, after all, the holidays - I might not) then I might just join in also. Keep this going if you can. I will reblog it a couple of times, and queue it for later to remind me.

We all benefit from a stronger community, and as communities collapse elsewhere we need to put in effort to rebuild them. Lets get to work doing that.

I understand that he's kind of the Elon Musk of the hypnokink community for some reason in that there's a crowd that will ride-or-die his stuff no matter what (I don't see the appeal, but YMMV and YKINMK). Dear Twitter,

I noticed that your social media platform has a bunch of users who seem to be hung up only on the platform and have no life outside of it. This is not healthy since too much social media leads to depression and bad behavior, and the QAnon effect. Also, it would be nice if there were not necessarily “Inspiration porn” but the occasional funny or amusing news in amongst the terrible.

General note: I tend to block or not connect my face to face friends and my family members just so they will ask: How have you been and try to actually contact me, rather than say nothing. This is a huge social media sin, apparently, but it saves my mental health quite a bit.

Conclusion

I use social media badly. I know UX, so there are two things I think UX on social media could fix: The QAnon effect--that is where you get into increasing weirder social media black holes. And the lack of user to user empathy causing social media burn out. If you want people to stay on the website, then fighting social media burnout should be a goal of social media websites. I have a few theories to get there, but UX is so focused on UX person to user, that it’ missing a large part of the User Experience: Interaction with other users. And User Experience can shape that.

Oh and FACEBOOK STOP BEING RACIST. That’s my UX hot tip for you. Make a big announcement about how you’ve changed the algorithm. Also, don’t allow foreign bots to do credit card fraud.

I believe the way forward for UX is to try to create empathy and common ground, but I get rich people, programmers’ egos (a joke programmers would get) and UX people these days are more focused on individualism, which BTW, goes against the social part of Social media. So the next level would actually be leaning into the community and social parts of social media by looking at social media as tiny governments and societies and then looking at ways to shape that community from the first to get there. But then you’d need social scientists of different types to get you there.

Word of Honor: Watch It Already

Yeah it’s time to do a rec post for real.  Because seriously, y’all, join me.

What is it?

Word of Honor/ Shan He Ling/ 山河令 is a Chinese drama series with 36 episodes currently in the process of airing.  It is based on a danmei/BL webnovel by Priest called 天涯客/ Tian Ye Ke/ Faraway Wanderers.  (Which I have not yet read, so everything in this post will be based solely on the show as aired up to ep 11.)

It’s set in Fantasy Ancient China, much like previous popular series The Untamed and is part of the same general genre. 

What’s it about?

Okay.  So Zhou Zishu was the leader of the Window of Heaven/Tian Chuang, an organization of spies and assassins who worked for a prince.

He saw basically everyone he cared about/his entire sect killed for the organization, and he decides he wants out, but there’s no leaving alive.  He essentially manages to find a loophole by using a cruel fantasy method to basically slow poison himself, guaranteeing his death in three years.  But he’s free. 

Cut to six months later, when he’s living his best life being completely drunk in a gutter, disguised with a fake tan, terrible beard and general squalor.  He draws the attention of a mysterious gentleman, our love interest Wen Kexing.

Wen Kexing completely fixates on Zhou Zishu (or Zhou Xu, as he introduces himself), declaring him incredibly beautiful, despite his rough state, and starts a bit of light stalking.

These two have a lot of humorous bantering around, before eventually stumbling into the plot in the form of a young teen boy who is the only surviving member of his brutally murdered clan.  They are tasked with taking him to someone trustworthy and thus the two equally mysterious warriors now have an adopted son together. 

That’s the basic set-up, and the show is pretty much evenly split between really adorable flirting, wacky hijinks, and operatic political drama plot.  All of these typically involve fight scene choreography.  Though, to be fair, I’ve seen less than a third of the show at this point, though I have something of a feel for what is coming from people watching it without English subs.

So...about that romance?

Look, there’s no beating around the bush here, I really can’t imagine being into this show if you’re not into the idea of a prominent romance between two male characters.  The novel, being danmei, is blatantly a queer romance, but this is China, which means censorship. 

**And I’m only saying this because this is tumblr, and no one cares what we think here, but, look, it’s a freaking miracle this show passed censorship because it is NOT subtle at all in its gayness.  The plot...really doesn’t make sense without a romantic aspect, and it’s really hard to miss.  It’s so blatant, that it’s hard to watch without remarking on it, which means a lot of people are afraid of the show being pulled or edited by the government before it’s done airing.  There’s precedence for that happening.  Seemingly even the makers are concerned, hence them releasing 9 episodes a week, up from the original 4.  So please, if you do watch it, don’t go yelling in the comments or on twitter or wherever about how it’s showing up the Chinese government’s censorship or whatever because that’s putting people’s careers in real danger, not to mention harming the show.**

ANYWAY.  The romance involves a HUGE amount of flirting, mostly initially from WKX to ZZS, but fairly soon they start throwing around the word “zhiji” aka “soulmate” to describe what they mean to each other.  If this seems very blatantly romantic, it IS, but it can also describe a platonic connection, which is how they manage to get away with this.  Still, it’s swoon-worthy honestly.  The mood for me is a very good period romance, because I’m wildly flailing about their sleeves touching or hands brushing over here, so if that’s your jam, please join us.

I’m going to get into slightly more spoilers under a cut, because I think it’s very fun to watch the show without knowing ANYTHING about it, but if you need further convincing/specifics please follow me.

The show also seems to involve a lot of alternating fluff and angst, which, let’s be honest here, is kinda what we like right?  It seems like they don’t want to keep us in pain for more than an episode or so without some resolution, but then new pain happens again.  These two break up and get back together a lot, is what I’m saying. 

Why should I watch it?

Like most good danmei, the show balances deep romance with interesting and exciting plot, but the characters are the real stand-outs here.  Both male leads are older than your average drama protagonists, somewhere close to 30.  And they are both essentially villains.  Not just characters with dark pasts, but really the bad guys of other people’s stories.  The novel is actually a sequel to a totally different romance, and at least ZZS was an antagonist in that story.

But here we have two very morally dubious characters: one who has given up that life and one who is still actively causing harm, and the story is about how they connect and change as a result.  (Again, I’m drawing slightly on what others have said of where the story is going and also just making assumptions.) 

If you have a moral problem with loving and shipping dark characters, this isn’t the show for you, no matter how cute it may appear.  This isn’t a “pure” couple, no matter how little on-screen sexuality we will get.  But if you love exploring morality and complicated characters who don’t always make the right choices, like I do, this is Your Thing.

Thankfully, the scriptwriter has come out and said there will be a happy ending for the main couple, at least.  So there’s that to hold on to as we face the angst and pain that is inevitably coming.  (From the novel I hear, yes, there’s some serious suffering in store.) A lot of us thought the show looked light and fun and now...we’re gonna be in pain.  So consider this fair warning as well. 

There’s also a cast of very easy to like side characters, in particular the “kids” A-Xiang (WKX’s servant) and Cheng Ling, the boy they rescue.  There’s also a colorful cast of villains that have huge amounts of style if nothing else. 

Downsides?

So the show was made on a VERY limited budget.  Overall I think they did a fantastic job.  But the seams DO show from time to time.  There’s not a lot of CGI (which is a good thing imo) but sometimes there are very obvious places they didn’t have the resources they needed, like crowd scenes made of the same 4 actors cut and pasted again and again, lol.  However, I think they did a great job on the costumes for the most part, and the sets look nice. 

There’s also been some criticism for the makeup which ZZS wears in eps 2-5, his disguise.  He’s meant according to the novel to look totally different and ugly.  But in reality he has a tan, some small scars, a painted on beard, and is dirty and disheveled.  Making his skin darker and calling that “ugly” is an unfortunate trope. I think the criticism is valid to an extent, but I hope it won’t destroy anyone’s enjoyment of the show. The makeup is gone forever midway through ep 6. 

Where can I watch it?

I’m going to assume most people reading this will be looking for a version subbed in English.  That is available on Youtube on the Youku official channel.  As of this typing, they have released 11 episodes with subs.  There are no fansubs otherwise available.  The Chinese language release is somewhere around ep 20-something? That is available through the Youku website. I believe their release schedule has the last episode coming out around March 23, but we’ll be weeks behind for the English version.  (Pardon the lack of a direct link to YT, but just search Word of Honor and you’ll find it.  If I have links tumblr will disappear my post.)

Hometown Cha Cha - Masterclass in Love Triangle and Bromance

I detest love triangles - I don’t like seeing people heartbroken over unrequited love. I have rarely seen love triangles resolved amicably with no bad blood between the rivals. Most times they will fight , hate on each other or be competitors pulling each other down and the other times one of them will die, or one of them won’t confess, or if they confess, the person in question won’t have the decency to respectfully decline the confession (Do not get me started on StartUp and Dalmi - it will result in a long post on how terrible she was to Han Ji Pyeong - DoDal fans stay away, I have no time for you). So given my past experience with a crappy love triangle in Startup and the fact that I was witnessing Hometown Cha Cha Cha setting all the wrongs done in Startup right, I was slightly upset to see another love triangle creep in.

One because I was really beginning to like Ji PD’s character and Lee Sang Yi is a good actor. So I would not have been able to bear DuSik pull a DoSan on Ji PD.

Two, DuSik despite being surrounded by people who loved and cared for him, was a loner at heart. HyeJin was steadily making her way into his heart bringing his walls down. Sure DuSik needed to find the love of his life, but he had also lost a brother and a friend and he would appreciate if he found one again a lot more. Speaking from my own experience, it’s always better to find the love of your life and best friend in two different people rather than in a single person.

I loved how DuSik and Seong-Hyun ended up saving each other from falling into the sea.

Shared a common love for vintage cameras, photography and food. It was good to see the know-it-all DuSik get handed a lesson in modesty by a guy who was no villain, but an insanely likeable, good natured fellow just like DuSik was. Both had a natural chemistry going from the moment they met - yes pretty much like DuSik and HyeJin did from the word go and I loved their crazy, comic timing together.

How can you even get over their comical scene appreciating the exquisite rare fish meal at Hwa Jeong’s restaurant. Ji-Won was right to warn Doha to not tread on their paths.

The surfing lessons and all the banter, the jealousy surfacing and the need to outdo each other , but while maintaining respect for each other.

But there was the elephant in the room and each needed to address it sooner than later.

Seong-Hyun was in love with HyeJin for 14 years. She was his first love in college and he hesitated to confess to her. He had clearly not watched Reply 1988 because he would’ve got some valuable lessons from Jung Hwan - the one who hesitates always loses. So this time after meeting her again, he decided not to hesitate, though he had already sensed the atmosphere and knew he didn’t stand a chance against DuSik. But he confessed nevertheless, for himself, to have no regrets and that was a lovely message - that we need to open our true feelings and our heart for our own growth , so we can move on with zero regrets.

How beautiful was HyeJin in her response to his confession. She was so mature and measured in her response. So truthful and honest. What a realistic character Shin Ha Eun has given us. She was so respectful to him, his feelings and her own feelings. She did not hide from him that she indeed had feelings for him during their college days, but she did not think it would work out. We all go through these insecurities at that age, because we are battling so much while growing up that we are afraid to hurt ourselves. I got a bit emotional because it reminded me of my college days and how I never opened up about my first crush - for the fear that I would lose a friend (we have sadly lost touch over the years - no fall out) and I knew we would have never made it work, because we wanted such different things in life. But then who knows, maybe being honest would have made me have less regrets and the what ifs would have gone forever. It’s why I admire and love HyeJin even more - she was honest to her first love because she owed him that and bold enough to confess to the love of her life without fear of rejection. And the natural next step is that the second lead goes away from the couple and everyone moves on with their lives. But not this drama, because Hometown Cha Cha Cha was tropey for sure, but the writer was also a master at subverting these tropes. Seong-Hyun is a wonderful guy and so is DuSik and both are mature enough to not let go of their new found friendship.

Seong-Hyun delivers the best line of Episode 11 - it’s why I love his character, it’s why he will be a forever favourite second lead (Again don’t remind me Han Ji Pyeong was the second lead, if you watched StartUp, you know that’s a lie that we were fed)

I have watched 70 odd KDramas and none comes to mind which had such a beautiful, mature resolution to a love triangle. Hats off to Shin Ha Eun for delivering the best lesson in how to handle love triangles.

Ji Seong-Hyun may have lost his first love, but he was not going to lose a friend. DuSik knows he had found one too.

It is wonderful that when both are at their lowest and their hearts are hurting , they are there for each other to give the nudge they needed to move ahead in their respective relationships.

DuSik is at his lowest and scared to reach out to HyeJin, it’s Seong-Hyun who comes and tells him to lay all the cards in front of her honestly and that he trusts her enough to accept DuSik with all his faults. How right he is!

Seong-Hyun loses his appetite and is hurting at the thought of Ji-Won leaving him. DuSik makes him realise that his pain this time is greater than it was when HyeJin rejected him; and that he should not be hesitating again to lose Ji-Won in his life.

There is no need to have elaborate talks - because these two guys just get each other. Ji PD gets Hong DuSik just like HyeJin does. Ji PD is the one who tells DoHa: ‘It mustn’t have been easy for DuSik either - what a stroke of bad luck to hit everyone’. He pretty much won me over with that line, because like everyone else without hearing Dusik’s side, he could have so easily hated on DuSik too. But he didn’t, because he knows - he knows DuSik, even though DuSik hasn’t opened up to him. And that’s the kind of friend you need for life!

There are many wonderful bromances in KDramas and if I see the next list that comes out without Hong DuSik and Ji Seong-Hyun on it, I will be revolting!

on the school dance fallout or, a thorough examination of the boys’ apologies to julie

full disclosure, i used to take serious issue with 1.06 for what it did to julie’s righteous anger in light of the boys letting her down, and my gripes haven’t fully gone away. but i have spent some time thinking on the fallout since my first (several) viewing(s) of the show and i finally noticed some emotionally nuanced storytelling that i needed time to come to appreciate. so, if you’ll indulge me another gif-filled meta post...

everyone knows that a good apology demonstrates an understanding of how you wronged the person you’re apologizing to, otherwise the words i’m sorry end up being fairly empty. and luckily for the boys, julie does a good job of immediately and effectively communicating her hurt feelings:

the first part is directed at luke specifically as her main co-writer, while the rest is about how all three of them let her down. it couldn’t be more clear that the reason she’s so betrayed is that a) they’ve made her feel like julie and the phantoms is less important to them than sunset curve and b) they’ve failed to consider her point of view or empathize with how important the show was to her.

which is why singing sorry a bunch of times, though charming, leaves her unmoved. and it’s why booking another gig actually makes her angrier. a gig the boys have deemed important enough to show up for is not a present or an olive branch to her, it’s a slap in the face. and if the boys had actually been paying attention to what she’d said the night of the dance, they could have anticipated her reaction.

but they clearly haven’t listened, so they haven’t learned how to do better or make things right. which is why this is such an important beat in the scene in the studio:

hounding julie to rejoin the band, even with such nice sentiments as “you’re the best thing that’s happened to us since we became ghosts”, does nothing to address how undervalued julie feels getting stood up because, as she points out above, their ability to do what they love is very limited without her. that makes her a powerful and essential member of the band, but it doesn’t prove that they care about her, julie, the person. and you can see in the reaction shot how the truth of her words lands for all of them.

their remorseful silence gives julie the opportunity to reiterate one of the points she made the night before, and it’s important to note which part of her hurt feelings she chooses to revisit.

the fact that they made the choice to pay more attention to their old music in spite of the music they were creating together is the thing that hurt her feelings the most. and, of course, her open hostility and her imagined reasons for why the boys picked sunset curve over julie and the phantoms (i.e. selfishness) puts luke on the defensive and ends with everyone leaving the scene dissatisfied.

great! okay, so here’s the part that’s bugged in the past (and the present, just. a little less so.) — in their attempt to deescalate the situation, alex and reggie give julie, and the audience, the all-important luke backstory. but like asking julie to rejoin the band with a shinier gig than a school dance flies in the face of actually making amends, so, too, does asking julie to empathize with luke’s emotional journey when the boys failed to take julie’s into account when they hurt her. only this time, it works as an olive branch.

now, i’m not saying that julie’s acting out of character in being sympathetic to luke’s pain, quite the opposite is the case. and i’m also not saying it’s bad that she does find sympathy for his situation — again, i’d argue that the opposite is true. it’s just, at the same time, it’s not a good look to force aside the young woman of color’s hurt in service of the white dude who hurt her feelings in the first place’s tragic backstory. the narrative is asking julie not to be mad at the choices luke made in the past two episodes because he’s really sad, actually.

and sure that’s an ungracious read of the moment, but i stand by the fact that it’s present in the text of the episode all the same, even with a little more nuance than i’m currently giving it credit for.

all that being said, alex and reggie do a bit to win back this highly insensitive maneuver with another stab at an apology.

alex addresses julie’s comment about them knowing “how tough it’s been for her to play” by reiterating that not showing up let her down and they get that that’s a crappy way to feel, while reggie takes a crack at julie’s “our songs were good” by emphasizing that they all love being in a band and making music with her. it’s a slight step up from their sorry in the garage, but not a complete fix because they’re all still sitting with the fact that they need julie to make the most of their music and how that complicates their declarations of loyalty.

the thing that makes this attempt at reconciliation different than those prior, of course, is this line:

the acknowledgement that things haven’t been fixed + the politeness + the implication that they’re willing to put in the time to earn her trust back so long as she lets them makes the apology a good enough one to accept. well, that, and:

one gets the sense that if rose could actually speak to julie in that moment, she’d be reminding her the value of grace. and, of course, we know that this also serves as a reminder to julie that good things are fleeting, loss is around every corner, and holding close what you care about is important. so she does just that by letting go of her (righteous, righteous) anger and reuniting the band.

still, even though alex and reggie have had their chance to make amends, luke doesn’t get the same moment to show he’s actually paid attention to julie’s needs in 1.06. so, naturally, he starts immediately in their first scene together in 1.07. 

i mentioned in my exhaustive list for “finally free” that julie picking a sunset curve song for their reunion number is a lovely, understated way for her acknowledge luke’s lost musical legacy, and i have similar feelings about the fact that luke suggests “edge of great” for their follow-up gig. it’s his first step in proving to her that he does care about the music they’ve written together with actions instead of empty apologies and misguided gestures.

by the end of the episode, though, the three of them take a step back (reggie gets points for his being, like, half a step) when they learn that, in addition to letting down julie, one of the consequences of their night chasing revenge is a ticking clock on their existence.

though i understand the urge to protect julie from the alarming news that their power is going out, there’s also a lot of selfishness behind the decision. julie loses them in the end no matter what, but lying to her about it and planning to leave without an explanation shows a disregard for her emotional journey in a similar way standing her up did. in fact, this plan is basically to stand her up for eternity. not cool, guys.

naturally, since it’s luke who’s the one proposing the terrible plan and it’s luke who never officially demonstrated his understanding of how he hurt julie’s feelings by not showing up when it mattered, it’s fitting that he’s suddenly more in tune with his own feelings. and, with that, comes a new awareness of how his and julie’s feelings interact, starting with this moment in 1.08.

you can see his conflict over her declaration. she’s worried without knowing just how much there is to be worried about, and that makes him sad because it’s confirmation of the fact that he’s important to her. that losing him will mean a lot of pain for her. but instead of cluing her in, he makes a conscious choice to continue withholding the information of his imminent departure. and maybe it’s such a weak deflection because he’s already starting to come to terms with how unfair he’s being to her, but even so, he’s not being a good friend when julie is showing up for him in big, unexpected ways he’d never even thought to ask for.

and again, here — 

— just after they’ve acknowledged that there’s a something and not a nothing between them, you can see him sober with the thought that she doesn’t know they’re about to lose each other. but it’s still not enough to move him to share. maybe because he prefers that she live with the possibility of that something when he no longer can, maybe because he’s too caught up in his own feelings about how crappy this hand they’ve been dealt by the universe is. but in any case, he keeps tight-lipped.

it’s seeing her excited about a future their music can’t have that finally pushes him into coming clean. and i love how subtly this demonstrates that he has been paying attention, actually, and he knows that what hurt julie the most was the feeling that their music took a backseat to his past. if he crosses over without telling her the whole, ugly truth about the mistake he made by standing her up, then he crosses over stuck in that mistake. because part of that whole, ugly truth is the beautiful realization that no music is worth making, julie, if we’re not making it with you. and he’s not quite at that particular aspect of his truth yet — he still has to experience the what if of caleb’s club to be able to make the declaration with the conviction he does — but when he finally does tell her that and means it, she’s given the catharsis she’s needed since the dance. because he’s backing up his apology with action (i.e. being willing to literally no longer exist instead of making music with someone else) and providing her with the same consideration she showed him when she rejoined the band because his loss felt more important than her anger. and reaching that level of give and take in their relationship, physically represented in their hug, finally sets them free.

so, yes. even though 1.06 is clunky and a little tasteless at times, i can acknowledge that the story manages to win any missteps back. quite poetically, honestly. all’s forgiven.

Sorry to interrupt your scrolling but please stop and read this.

My queue officially ran out a few minutes ago in preparation for the Post+ Protest happening tomorrow. If you haven’t heard what’s going on, you have to check out this Tumblr blog. It has a ton of info. Go do it right now! It’s super important and may affect YOU!  

Let’s forget about the ethical aspect for a minute. I only had to do a few minutes of research to find out just how TERRIBLE Post+ is for the community... and I’m talking each and every individual person that posts pretty much anything on here.

Did you know that putting your content behind a paywall on Tumblr may in fact be illegal?? If you make anything out of content that does not completely belong to you, you could get in legal trouble. That’s right. YOU. Not Tumblr, which is why Post+ is so beneficial for them. They’ll make money off ad revenue and screw the little guys like us that just want to make a few dollars off a cute gif or a fanfic about our favorite characters. 

This includes content created from a video game like Sims 4, TV/movie gifs, memes you found on Reddit, other people’s videos on YouTube... and yes, even fanfics... which is literally the thing that brought me over to Tumblr years ago. These things are ONLY fair use when they aren’t monetized. 

You could get in serious trouble if you monetize anything that does not 100% belong to you and you should be aware of that before backing something as dangerous as Post+! They only care about themselves.

Post+ is all sorts of wrong for so many reasons that other blogs way more eloquent than me have already explained. I linked a blog with all of the important info above but here’s a specific, concise post that essentially sums up all of the bad. 

That’s why I’m participating in the blackout tomorrow.

From 12am on August 6th to 12am on August 7th (Eastern Time US/Canada), I will not be uploading new content. I will not be liking or reblogging anyone else’s content either. I’m completely logging off Tumblr for the day and you should be too!
