since tomorrow is isa day, I wanna ramble about what else can I do! Honestly it’s in my top 3 encanto songs and the more I listen the more I love it <3
Tumblr media
So I feel like a lot of the things to say about this song have already been said but i don’t see much discussion about how the musical elements of the song match the story.
let me explain: at the beginning of the song isa sings softly, very similarly to her part in we don’t talk about bruno. The music also matches this softness with the opening notes, but as soon as isabela says “what else can I do” the instrumental becomes more rock and this first “what else can I do” is also sang deeper than the first few lines.
Also notice how when the beat picks up giving the song a faster rhythm, mirabel is seen trying to catch up to isabela and essentially the beat of the song too, mirabel is behind as she’s confused and struggling to understand isabelas sudden change. When we see isabela talking about what’s she’s always done “rows of roses, perfect practiced poses” she once again reverts back to her soft “princess” tone. Then the realization hits that she could do more than that and once again her voice deepens and the beat picks up. Mirabel is also still at this point trying to catch up for most of this verse.
during the chorus isabela no longer has the softness to her voice and is entirely embracing her new found self with her deep vocals. During the breakdown we see isabela falter for a moment as she truly opens up to her sister. As a lot of people know by now mirabel in a way reprises isabelas verse of we dont talk about bruno but I think this is more than a cool callback.
think about the lyrics: “he told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine” and mirabel sings “you just seem like your life’s been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes” it’s two very different interpretations of a “dream” for isabela she still hasn’t gotten the life of her dreams but she longs for it, for mirabel she’s always wanted isabelas life. But during what else can I do isabela discovers herself truly for the first time and is essentially getting the “life of her dreams” “he told me that my power would grow” “all I know are the blossoms you grow”. Bruno predicted that isabelas power would someday grow and during this song that’s exactly what’s happening isabela is no longer restricting herself to other peoples expectations and finally is doing what she wants. This line could not only be interpreted as her discovering new sides to her gift but also HER power, her discovery of who she is. That’s the most powerful thing. Mirabel admits at this point that she’s only known isabela on a surface level that she never truly connected with or understood her. However during mirabels part of the song the beat slows down again and she is no longer running to keep up with the song or isabela. As this is the moment she finally understands isabela and they are now in sync with eachother. This is the moment brunos prophecy becomes true.
From this point on the song changes key to be higher and the sisters are harmonizing and bouncing off of eachother. Truly repairing their severed bond through song. Mirabel is now encouraging isabela to go wild and isabela is finally free and happy and like in the song “the way is clearer cuz you’re here and well I owe this all to you” isabela finally acknowledges that mirabel is the one that helped her discover herself and she finally sees mirabels worth.
Tumblr media
The final notes of the song are no longer “perfect” “princess” style high notes but a much deeper and natural range for isabela who is finally happy in herself <3

BRUNO & THE STRANGER
💚❤️💚❤️💚
The knock at the door was Louisa. She looked like she had something on her mind.
"Louisa! I've hardly seen you since the construction began. Do you want to sit down and chat?"
"Actually, I was wondering..." did all the Madrigals look this adorable when they were nervous?
"Go on, you can tell me," Catalina assured her.
"Well, some people from the village are throwing a party for the new people, to get to know each other and there will be people my age there and..."
"And...?" 'Lina could tell where this was going but was savoring the tender moment.
"Well, Isa always looks pretty, even when she's a mess, and she makes it look so effortless. I was wondering if you could help me out? I want to look pretty tonight -"
"But darling, you are pretty."
"I don't want to just be the work horse, if you get what I'm saying..."
"I totally do. A makeover for the ball-"
"It's just a party-"
"Okay, more subtle then," Catalina eased, "but you do know you are beautiful."
Louisa began tearing up.
"Come on in then. We can talk about it while I get you gussied up."
Louisa just made it through the door, but the larger-on-the-inside magic accommodated her height once she was inside.
Catalina gestured for Louisa to sit down in front of a vanity.
'Lina sat on the counter and held Louisa's hand.
"Now, what's going on? What all do you want to do?"
"Maybe different makeup? I'm not sure," Louisa started.
"Not sure where to begin or what you want done?"
"Both," Louisa confided.
"That's okay! How much time do we have?"
"I'm not sure-"
"That's fine, I'll use glamor magic. This would have been an excellent learning opportunity for Mirabel but," 'Lina said with her hands on her hips, standing once again.
"Mirabel and Isabela make it look easy," Louisa started.
"Yeah, it's easier for some than others," Lina had to lower the chair to access Louisa's face, "do you want to try a different hair style?"
"Umm" Louisa didn't sound very confident.
"That's alright. I'll just start on the makeup. Now, look me in the face," Catalina looked Louisa in the eyes, "when I do makeup, I bring out more of what you have. You are the beautiful foundation, understand?"
Louisa nodded.
"Now you've got gorgeous brown eyes, they are very expressive. How do you feel about a touch of gold on the eyelid?"
"Well, nothing too different..."
"I think it'll bring your eyes out nicely. You were saying?"
"Well, when you put it that way," Louisa started, "I know I shouldn't feel this way but my sisters... I feel like I'm not as pretty as they are,"
"Girl," Lina was trying to find the right words. She pointed to a few flowers that were tattooed onto her arm, "the hydrangea, the poppy, and the rose are all pretty flowers but don't look alike."
"Sure, but they're all flowers. Sometimes I don't even feel like I'm one of the flowers," Louisa's tearing up threatened some of the eye makeup Catalina had done.
"Well, candles, sunsets, and flowers are all beautiful, too. But they aren't similar at all," Lina was seeking her centuries of experience. "But darling, you are gorgeous. And it's not all on the outside," she dabbed the corners of Louisa's eyes. She started on some bronzing agent.
"Your eyes are rich with laughter and tears. Skin brightened by the sun's touch. Your hands convey a gentleness that can only be measured by the strength of your heart," she circled over so that she would be standing behind Louisa for the big reveal in the mirror. "The sun couldn't outshine you."
Louisa was carefully looking at herself in the mirror. She smiled.
"Do we have time for something else?"
"Of course, but let me grab something real quick," Catalina went digging about her trinkets.
She produced a pair of earrings. They were made of rose quartz cut brilliantly and set into gold studs.
"You'll need this, it'll maintain the connection of my magic to your appearance. Okay?"
"They're beautiful," Louisa handled them gently, trying not to cry.
And so on went their little makeup session.
Louisa left with a big smile on her face and some newfound confidence.
"Thank you tía Lina," Louisa left around sunset.
She sat down and adjusted to the little leak of magic, attached to Louisa's earrings. It wasn't a large drain, but it was there.
She made her way up to Bruno's tower. Casita seemed to be eager, as it clattered and shifted its tiles to make her ascent faster.

Madrigal wake up order!
Mirabel -> Mira typically wakes up either at dawn or a little bit later. She wants to feel useful despite her lack of a gift, and the best way for her to do that is to wake up early and do all the extra stuff (ie, setting the table for breakfast, waking up the people who need to be up, etc etc). After the movie she still wakes up early, but more out of habit than anything
Julieta -> Typically Julieta will wake up on her own, though there is the occasional day where she tires herself out and oversleeps. She's an early riser because she both has to cook food for the town and breakfast for the family. Post movie she gives herself 2 days a week to just sleep in, in which case she doesn't wake up til after Antonio
Luisa -> She just likes taking the time in the morning to exercise. It's an activity that requires little thought, so she finds its a nice way to just, shut her brain off and stop worrying about stuff for a bit
Abuela -> She's woken up early since she was a teenager. It's simply what she does. She also tries to set an example for the family via her own actions (a failing endevour, no matter how you slice it)
Félix -> I like to think that Felix was the son of a farmer, so he's just gotten used to waking up abnormally early to help with chores
Isabela -> Isa isn't a morning person. If left to her own devices she'd sleep in till dinner. She wakes up early so she doesn't shatter the "perfect" image she has set up. She drinks a shit ton of coffee to hide the fact that she's about 3 seconds from passing out at the table. After the movie ends and all the pressure is lifted she's the only one in the family who sleeps nearly as long as Pepa
Augustin -> Not much to say here. He just seems like the kind of guy to fall at this point in the list
Dolores -> Dolores doesn't get much sleep. Her room blocks out the worst of the noise, yeah, but she can still hear everything in the house. She knows from firsthand experience just how hard it is to fall asleep when Camilo is snoring with all his lung capacity just a room over. Thankfully, she doesn't need much sleep to function through the day.
Antonio -> He's 5 and his animals are very very warm. Enough said
Camilo -> He sleeps like the dead. Shapeshifting takes a lot of energy, so twice the amount of food twice the amount of sleep. He's typically who Mirabel has to wake up in the morning, because otherwise he would sleep until lunch
Bruno - Pepa -> Much like Dolores, they don't get much sleep to begin with. On the rare occasions they do manage to fall asleep theyre very susceptible to night terrors, which also drives them away from sleep. On a typical day they wouldn't be going to sleep until just barely before dawn, sleeping until dinner if allowed

Camilo Madrigal | Anger
Request : @miookikiiii11 hola <3 so i wanted to ask since I saw requests open <3 About my boy Camilo - I was kinda nervous asking you this but sometimes i gotta do it .. so- How about Camilo has a anger issue Girlfriend that intends to get mad very easily and Isabela and Mirabel don't like her very much and Isabela gets mad easily to so it's like Isabela and Y/N get in fights very easy And Camilo is always there to keep Y/N calm and protects her to But one day it just gets to out of hand with the anger issues and Isabela and Y/N fighting..- So Isabela grabs her by the hair and just screams at her but Camilo sees that and comes to the rescue :o And stops Isabela from further injury's Camilo gets angry and tells Isabela "What is wrong with you?!" Isabela just ignores him and goes back to her room and from then she just ignores her and Mirabel ignored her since the beginning Y/N angers stop and she just cry's it all out Yeah and that all sorry if it's cringe :'D and it's okay if you don't wanna do this <3
Prompt : none
𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 : swearing, angst
Paring : Camilo Madrigal x F!reader
𝙎𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙮 : Camilo is the only one who can calm you down, but sometimes its just to much
words : 300+
It was a recurring thing, something no one seemed to be able to stop or even diverge; it never stopped. You had anger issues, it was plain and simple, no one taught you to deal with it, so it just bottled up until you exploded. Isabella was similar, she was a perfect princess, she was only ever allowed to she the right emotions, so when she let loose it was surprising and a lot. You both didn't mesh well.
Most of the time Camilo could keep you calm, you always asked if he was annoyed or bored with looking after you but he insisted he wasn't. Even in times like now where Isabella had particularly pissed you off.
Isabella was making digs at you as you and Camilo tried to spend a lazy day in Casita. You were tapping your finger against the spine of your book, trying to distract yourself from Isabella's words. "I'm sorry Y/N/N, am I annoying you?" Isabella asked in make sympathy.
"Quite a bit actually," You snapped flipping the page in your book. Isabella scoffed sending a pile of flowers at your face. You slammed the book shut ready to pounce at her, but Camilo was quicker.
He held your waist gently, trying to soothe you, "Hey, hey, it's okay Mi Vida, just ignore her."
"Oh I'm sorry Camilo, did I offend your pet?" Isabella snarked peering her head over Camilo's shoulder. She flicked her hand and vines pulled at your hair sending you smashing into the ground.
Camilo shoved Isabella lightly making her lose concentration on her vines. "What's wrong with you?! Piss off Isa," Camilo growled. Isabella scoffed and waltzed back to her room. Camilo knelt next to you, throwing the vines away. "Hey, Y/N, are you okay?"
You sobbed in your hands, using the couch to push yourself up. "I'm sorry," You whispered, grabbing your book from the pile of flowers.
"Don't worry about it," Camilo said softly. "Isa is just mean."
You shook your head and walked past Camilo, leaving him standing alone in the house.

In the Madremonte AU, it's very interesting to see how much of an impact Alma's feelings have on how the miracle manifests on each of her grandchildren. I was wondering how you thought that might affect Antonio's- I thought he'd be at risk of being cursed out of desperation to restore the family magic like in canon, but since she doesn't mind Mira being giftless in this AU, what are her feelings leading up to his ceremony, if they're in any way relevant?
I think the magic responds poorly to sudden bursts of emotion from Alma Madrigal.
For Isabela, it was Alma’s sudden excitement at the idea of having a grandchild to pass on the family name. And though it wasn’t malicious necessarily, her expectations of what Isabela was as a first born of the Madrigal family caused her gift to quickly grow uncontrollably powerful — the magic doing its best to prove itself worth what Alma expected.
Dolores didn’t get the same treatment, as she was second to Isabela despite the curse, and Alma had time to adjust to the idea of Lolo being the next family matriarch as Isa’s disease rapidly overtook her.
For Mirabel, she wasn’t actually cursed at the beginning. Her gift was…well…not getting one, based on Alma’s feelings about the Magic’s necessity in the valley. Of course though, it being so fresh still, her rapid panic at the idea of the magic dying out was like a match to a stick of dynamite. It changed the unsettled gift Mirabel was given into her curse, though it was slow progressing as it wasn’t placed on her instantly like Isabela’s had been.
Similarly, Alma had time to adjust to the idea of Antonio’s ceremony not going well. Yeah she was worried about it, but it wasn’t something that happened quite so suddenly. She had expectations about it possibly going sideways.
Alma Madrigal isn’t being malicious intentionally. The curse isn’t responding to any sort of ill intent towards her family. Like I said, she has no issues with Mirabel in the AU, or anyone for that matter (maybe not even Bruno this time). She didn’t ask for any of it to happen. She’s scared of the curse that caused Isabela to run, and she doesn’t understand why the curse happened at all. The magic is simply reflecting what she’s feeling, and causing some wonky side effects in those touched by those big feelings.
Because Alma is a complex character affected by tragedy, which results in complex emotions about her life :)

General Encanto Headcanons
Tumblr media
Note: English is not my language, so I hope you will be understanding of any flaws you find.
You are not from the village, your parents set foot on Encanto for the first time on their honeymoon by accident and returned several times after that, until they moved shortly before you were 5 years old.
Your parents are very proud (and may have raised you to feel sorry for the Madrigals) and insist that you accept nothing from the Madrigal gifts.
It's not that you discriminate against the family, but something has rubbed off on you. And you try to be independent them as your parents said to you.
Normally your family acts as a link with the outside world.
Around the age of Mirabel and Camilo. You are Mirabel's best friend.
You're glad Mirabel doesn't have a gift because she can spend more time with you. And you tell her when the mood is right (you know when to shut up about it)
At the beginning of the film, the adults (except Alma, who is in her world, but will join the train soon) literally already adore you for being Mirabel's friend without wanting anything from the Madrigals.
Even Bruno knows you, he has seen you since childhood and in his visions you are always close to his niece (when he leaves, it's a relief for him, knowing that Mirabel will not be alone)
Casita loves you, you even have a guest room made for when you decide to stay for the nights. In the morning Casita wakes you up bringing the smell of breakfast to your window… when Casita can, of course.
And you can see the thought that the family has put into your bedroom. A shelf with books given by Pepa and Luisa, a diary given by Dolores (the only thing that will keep your secrets in this town! She told you) and bookmarks of dried herbs from Julieta, decorated with flowers from Isabela in the window, with cushions embroidered by Mirabel and the old boys' ruanas that you use as shawls to cover yourself at night walks when you're cold. You even have a stuffed black jaguar (at first you thought it was a black kitten) that you don't remember and who gave it to you.
You and Pepa exchange books, you are her “tear dealer”. The only one allowed to make her cry without causing commotion.
Even if you're shy or insecure, or have two left feet, being surrounded by them makes dancing or even singing seem second nature when you're all together. There are no judgements, just an infectious warmth and joy.
You attest that Dolores said that Bruno was within the walls of Casita when he left… and no one believed her. Well, she paraphrased it weird, being a kid, but she said it.
You celebrate the death of Barbie “Bela” and adore the new Isa. You had once asked her before why she didn't relax, but she always told you that she was "perfectly".
Of course you said the same thing to Luisa, so Isabela would surely think that you would ask it to comply and look good with her younger sister.
You usually don't accept Julieta food if you have not collaborated in doing it, so it is normal that you bring your own from home. Partly also because these are recipes from your country of origin. This sometimes hurts Julieta, but she is also grateful that you see her as more than just the cook. Plus you keep her in company these long morning cooking for the whole town.
Camilo doesnt transform into people in front of you, because he feels insecure that "you look for another person in him"
But anyway prefer when Camilo is Camilo with you (and you have learned to distinguish it)
The boy was the first to have a crush on you, if we discount Mirabel herself and Antonio.
Antonio who kept thinking about whether he should marry you or Mirabel or both when he grew up (laughs from the adults)

In your Madremonte au, what would it mean for Isabela with the magic falling apart? Since you said at this point, she basically IS her gift, what's going to happen with the magic fading and everyone's gift getting weaker closer to the end? Would she become more human-like either in appearance or demeanor, be stuck like the way she is, dissolve into nature with how far gone she is, or would she gradually become more human-like in that her disease will start to shed in a way, I guess. If it's like the movie and her magic dissolves completely with the falling of the house, I can't even begin to imagine how jarring that'd be for her.
On another note, if on the off chance when Mirabel starts visiting Isa, one of her family members find them, how would they react to finding out what she's become if they recognized her.
I haven’t come up with any hard conclusions yet about what’ll happen when the magic cracks and eventually fails.
All of the endings you mentioned are still on the table, but I’m leaning towards the ‘Mira pushes the curse back’ little by little, and when the magic dies Isa either reverts very painfully back into a human form (which opens great opportunity for family angst), or she ‘dies’ which isn’t actually dying cause naturally I won’t kill her off (this isn’t Tainted, geez).
The only one who could recognize Isa as she is would probably be Bruno and Alma, who saw the vision about her powers when it was made. The other family members only heard what the prophecy said, and didn’t actually see it.
Again, there’s just kinda a lot of open holes still in the plot, and suggestos are always welcome this early in the process :)
