Mirabel and Isabela headcanon:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so as I was once again appreciating the visual spectacle that is what else can I do, I began to think more about this specific moment. The way isa looks at her when she does that gesture makes me think it was something they used to do. Jared did mention they were close very far in the past so my theory is that they came up with this handshake as kids maybe to cheer each other up or maybe just for fun. But by the way isabela completely lights up and begins to let loose makes me think she got reminded of the old times. Idk I just thought this part was super cute and they better have more of this sort stuff if there’s future content!

Never A Dull Moment - One Shot
Tumblr media
[Synopsis: There has never been a dull moment in the Madrigal household and the morning of Dolores' wedding is no exception. With Isa and Dolores driving Mira up the wall, Pepa going out of her mind and Agustin being...well...Agustin, Julieta is slowly giving up hope of getting anything done. She can't find it in her to complain though. After all, it is probably the most fun she has ever had.]
Read on AO3 or under the cut!
“Get that thing away from me! Mamá! Mamá!”
Julieta sighed under her breath and moved away from the counter at the sound of thundering feet and her daughter shouting at the top of her lungs, wiping her hands on her apron and palming a curl from her face seconds before she came racing into la cocina with Isa and Dolores hot on her heels. She had little time to work out what was going on before Mira moved behind her, using her as a human shield, and she laughed when the two elder girls halted in front of her. “Ay, I already know I’ll regret this,” She pinched the bridge of her nose before looking back and forth between the girls. “But what’s going on?”
“Only a game, Tía.” Dolores smiled, smoothing her hands down the front of her dressing gown.
“Mamá, I don’t know what that thing is or what it does,” Mirabel waved her hand in the direction of Isa who was holding up her mascara applicator. “But you can tell them to keep it away from me because I have no interest in finding out.”
“Ugh, I am just trying to make you look beautiful!” Isa snapped.
“Excuse me, I am already beautiful!” Mira retorted. “Mamá, tell them I don’t need any of that stuff.”
Julieta glanced over her shoulder at her, reaching to stroke her face. “You are muy hermosa, mi vida.”
“And that is why you’re my favourite.” Mira leaned in to peck her cheek.
“But…”
“Wha? No, no, no. No buts!”
“But amor, today is a special occasion,” Julieta pointed out, laughing when her daughter gawped at her before turning back to the elder girls and seeing the smirks on their faces. “I think you should give her a ten-second head start. The poor girl deserves a chance.”
They glanced at each other and shared a knowing look before turning back to Mira.
“Diez, nueve, ocho…”
“Oh, you are so not my favourite anymore.” Mirabel grumbled, moving from behind her and fleeing la cocina.
Julieta crossed her arms and chuckled when Isa and Dolores gave up counting and ran after her again, Dolores with one hand on her head to keep the pins in place and Isa clinging to her mascara, and she shook her head when Pepa walked in. “Lolita, please…” She watched her reach out to take her daughter by the arm, but it was too late and there was a scowl on her face when she turned to her once her girl was out of sight. “You did this! You!”
“Me?” She brought a hand to her chest, feigning shock. “I have no idea what gave you that impression, but you are absolutely right.”
“Do you have any idea how long I have been trying to get her to sit still for?” Pepa asked. “You are not helping, hermana!”
“Ay...Casita, help me out here,” She rolled her eyes before the house moved a chair towards them and made Pepa sit down. “Pep, calm down. Remember what happened the last time you got worked up on a wedding day? It was not pretty. You gave me the flu!”
Her hermana sighed and raked a hand through her hair. “Lo siento. I…I want it to be perfect for her.”
Taking a buñuelo from the plate on the counter and sprinkling some powdered sugar onto it, she let Pepa take it from her and watched her take a bite. “It will be, I promise. I know you want everything to be done as fast as possible, but we have time before she needs to be at the church. Besides, she is the novia which means she has the right to be slightly late. She also has the right to a little fun before the anxiety takes over. Remember us in the hours before Gus and I got married? Chasing Bruno around the sitting room, trying to force him to wear that stupid tie? Mamá was so annoyed, but we had some fun.”
“You two had fun. I was strangled. You know; still not convinced you weren’t trying to get rid of me.”
They looked at each other for a second after Bruno poked his head into the room purely to make that comment, their laughter taking over when he vanished again as Pepa ate the last of her buñuelo before wiping the crumbs from her mouth. “It has been nice to hear her laughing,” Pepa admitted. “She does deserve to have some fun, you’re right.”
“Do you think I could get that in writing? You say it so little…” She teased.
All she earned herself was an eye roll in response as Pepa stood up. “I needed that. Gracias hermana.”
“De nada,” She shrugged before watching her leave la cocina and turning back to the counter to go on wiping it down, the corner of her mouth twitching into a smirk when a pair of arms snaked around her waist and her husband kissed her on the neck. “I may have to accept the fact that I am never going to get this counter clean again,” She feigned annoyance, leaning back against him. “So many distractions.”
“I think you’ll find you are the distraction here, amor, not me,” He replied, tucking his head gently into her neck and grazing the dip there with his nose the way he knew made her shiver. “I only came in to see if you’d seen my tie, but now I hope we never find it.”
Setting the rag down and turning in his arms, bringing her hands to his chest and taking a moment to admire him in his suit, she smirked as his hands moved to her waist. “And why would you hope such a thing on a day like this, Señor?”
“Because…” He stepped further into her. “Until we find it, I can’t get dressed and that means I can stay here with you.”
She hummed in response, pretending to think about what he said while her gaze moved back and forth between his and his lips. “I have had better excuses from you in our many years of marriage, but I may be able to accept that one,” She admitted. “Just about.”
“Good. I mean, I would have regardless, but I like knowing you and I are on the same page.” He smiled.
“So, are you?”
“Am I what?”
“Going to stop talking at some point and kiss me? Else, this is turning out to be muy anticlimactic.”
Chuckling under his breath, he took a hand from her waist and brought it to the side of her neck under her curtain of hair before using his thumb beneath her chin to tilt her head back. He let his nose graze hers for a second, revelling in the way her eyes fell closed at the contact, and captured her lips with his in a soft kiss. She went up onto her tiptoes as the kiss lingered and he felt her arms circle his neck, her fingers teasing the hairs at the nape as they slowly gave in to one another. It was little wonder neither of them heard their daughter approaching the kitchen until it was too late.
“Ay, Mamá!”
Mira’s outcry prompted them to pull apart and turn to look at her, but their initial shock at her finding them like that passed quickly and they struggled to mask their amusement at her standing there with her hands covering her face.
“Mira, look at me.” Julieta told her.
“Nope.”
“Mira…”
“How could you let them do this to me?” Mirabel dropped her hands to reveal herself completely done up, mascara on her lashes and her lips a subtle shade of red. Her cheeks had even been patted with a little rouge by one of the girls. “I stopped running because they stopped counting, but then they both jumped on me. I think Isabela stabbed me in the eye with that stick thing and now I can’t see out of it.”
Agustín chuckled. “Miraboo, you couldn’t see much before. I don’t think you can blame Isa entirely.”
“Pa, I need you on my side.” She whined before he walked over and put an arm around her shoulders.
“Lo siento, but you really do look beautiful, mi vida.” Julieta shook her head, her hands on her hips.
She pouted. “I do not. I look like Isa threw up on me and yes, it feels as gross as it sounds.”
“Okay, okay, okay,” Julieta made her way over and cupped her face in her hands. “If I help you sort this, will you forgive me?”
“Potentially,” She hummed. “I might forgive you a little faster if you give me a buñuelo after.”
Julieta nodded before taking her by the hand and walking her towards the exit of the kitchen, she and her husband sharing a smile when she stopped for a second to look over her shoulder at him. “Back in un momenta. Do not eat all those buñuelos, I beg you.”
“Promise. Uh, I really do need to know where my tie is though.”
“Bread bin.”
“Wha…”
“Amor, your guess is as good as mine.”
Standing there thoroughly confused, he watched his wife and daughter leave the kitchen together and frowned with a shake of his head. He had no idea what had gone on – it had been an insane morning already – but he was sure of one thing.
There really was never a dull moment in this house.

Play the part?? Slight twist on the movie, Mira finds out about Isabela's problems sooner, and, being Mira, she wants to help??
Going by your preemie!Mira hc, when she's sick, she's sick. So she knows in turn how to act sick and make in convincing. She does so, so all attention will be on her and Isa can go destroy her perfect image for an hour or two :D
play the part: [character] pretends to be sick – Mirabel (+ Isabela)
the secrets that you keep are ever ready
Mirabel couldn't believe it.
Her sister, her older sister, Señorita Perfecta Isabela, had a secret. She didn’t want to get married. She didn’t want to marry Mariano, yet she never told anything. Not Abuela, not their parents, not even Luisa.
Mirabel wondered if Dolores knew; after all, Dolores knew everything.
But the youngest Madrigal sister couldn’t believe she found out about it only because the rats told Antonio, and Antonio told her, and she swore him to keep it a secret, and she planned or doing something.
Maybe if she rescued Isabela from that awful situation she was in, their relationship would get better. Maybe it would help the Miracle, maybe it would save the magic.
Then her Papi found her in the nursery and saw the vision, and she was that close to telling him everything, but Abuela announced the dinner was ready and it meant the Guzmáns were there and there was no time.
So Mirabel decided to improvise. Always of weaker health and with a tendency to get sick quickly and easily, often pretty bad, Mirabel knew how to act when the need was. Sometimes, when she didn’t want to go to school, she’d pretend she was sick, and she felt bad for worrying her mamá so, but being born prematurely had some benefits.
As they sat down at the table, Dolores was staring at her, and Mirabel was staring back. Well, it was awkward, and as Dolores was close to breaking, Mirabel knew, she had no more time.
She coughed.
Dolores blinked, and Camilo looked at her as well, one eyebrow raised.
Mirabel grabbed the glass with juice and took a sip, immediately afterwards bursting into a fit of coughs.
Now, people were looking her way, and Dolores tilted her head, still staring.
“Are you alright, Mirabel?” Mariano asked.
It made Isabela turn her head as well. “Yes, are you alright?” she asked, though there was suspicion clear in her dark, barely narrowed eyes.
“Yeah, of course–” Mirabel wheezed, putting her hand on her chest. “It’s just–” she coughed deeply, to the point it sounded almost like a whistle. “Just a cough!”
Mamá looked at her with both eyebrows pinched together in concern. “Are you sick?”
“No, no,” Mirabel waved her hand absentmindedly. “It’s just... Something in the air...”
“Your eyes are glossy,” Dolores squeaked out quietly, the grip she had on her wine glass losening a little.
“Yeah? I don’t feel anything...”
She started thinking about the most embarrassing things she had ever witnessed in her life. She remembered tripping over her own feet and diving head-first into the fountain in front of the villagers. She remembered walking in on her completely naked tía Pepa in the bathroom. She remembered walking in on her parents doing... Stuff... When she was twelve–
And she knew her face got dark as a beetroot.
“Mi amor, you’re flushed,” her papá touched her forehead with the back of his hand. “Ay, you’re so warm!”
Mamá was by her side in a few seconds. “Ay mi vida, not this again,” she said, cupping her face with a worried frown on her face. “I think you’re running a fever!”
Mirabel shook her head, sniffling for a better effect. “That’s nonsense, mamá, I’m–” she burst into another fit of very convincing coughs. “I’m fine!”
“No, you’re not,” her mamá said firmly.
“I am! Oh, come on, I don’t wanna ruin Isabela’s perfect proposal dinner–”
Mirabel was almost sure she could hear Isabela gritting her teeth on her right.
Dolores squeaked again, her gaze flickering between Isabela and Mirabel, her eyebrows raised in confusion.
Mirabel was actually shocked when she felt a hand gripping her forearm. She moved her head to stare at Isabela who pursed her lips at her before turning her head towards the matriarch.
“Abuela, I think I should take Mirabel to my room,” she said in a calm, velvety tone, though her fingers dig into Mirabel’s arm. “She needs her rest.”
Before Abuela could answer, Mariano supported her on that. “Oh yes, the family member’s health should always come first!” he said, giving Isabela a dreamy, soft smile. “You’re such a good hermana, Isabela.”
Isabela smiled at him, patting Mirabel’s hand. “She’s the baby,” she said in a sweet tone, making Mirabel scowl. “It’s my duty as her older sister to take care of my youngest hermanita.”
Señora Guzmán gushed at it. “Oh, it’s amazing to see how close and caring all the Madrigals are!” she exclaimed and clapped her hands. “I’m sure we can postpone this dinner to when Mirabel is healthy and can take a part in this beautiful event, right, Alma?”
Abuela blinked, moving her gaze from both sisters to her friend. “Oh, of course, Andrea! One week won’t make that big of a difference, will it?”
“Of course not,” señora Guzmán said with a breathy laugh. “Love is very patient, isn’t it?”
It brought some chuckles from all the married (or formerly married, in Abuela’s case) Madrigals.
“Claro,” Abuela said with a smile, then looked at Mirabel, Isabela and mamá. “Julieta, Isabela, take Mirabel upstairs, por favor.”
And that was how all three of them found themselves in Isabela’s room, in her room full of flowers from the bottom to the top, so pink, and purple, and violet, and perfect, it was almost sickening.
Even mamá, to Mirabel’s smirk, looked a little overwhelmed by all the pastels as she glanced around.
Soon after Mirabel was placed on the bed Isabela created for her, and mamá left them, with a promise that she would return shortly with some medication for Mirabel, to make her feel better.
She barely closed the door, when Isabela put both hands on her hips with a scowl. “What was that?!”
Mirabel smiled innocently. “What was what?” she asked, coughing weakly. “I have no–”
“You’re not sick!” Isabela accused her. “Even you wouldn’t be able to get sick this quick!”
“You know I always was prone to sicknesses!”
Isabela’s gaze hardened as she tapped her foot impatiently.
Mirabel rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I’m not,” she said, sitting up and crossing her arms over her chest. “But I think you should be grateful because I just saved your ass!”
“Grateful?! For what? For ruining my life?!”
“I didn’t ruin your life!”
“You did! Mariano was going to propose to me, and Abuela was happy, and the familia was happy, everyone was happy but–”
“–you weren’t happy. You’re not happy.”
“What–”
“I know you don’t wanna marry this big dumb hunk.”
Isabela blinked rapidly, her eyes going wide. “What?”
“That!” Mirabel growled in frustration. “Antonio told me because his rats told him that they had heard you ranting to yourself last night about how you didn’t want to get married.”
“I–”
“You don’t love him, do you?”
Isabela was silent.
“You don’t even like him.”
Isabela shook her head. “I do like him. We’ve been friends since we were kids but...”
“You don’t wanna to be his wife.”
Isabela avoided her gaze. “No, I don’t.”
Mirabel shifted to the edge of the bed and jumped out of it, walking closer to her sister. “Then why did you agree to court him?”
Her older sister sighed. “It was Abuela’s idea and I...”
Mirabel felt enlightened all of a sudden. “You wanted to make Abuela proud.”
Isabela nodded.
Mirabel fell on her back on the mattress. “Wow,” she muttered, staring at the ceiling. “Who would think we had so much in common?”
“Oh, do we?”
“Yeah... We’ve always done everything to make Abuela proud.”
“Yeah...” Isabela agreed, and her tone suddenly got so soft, so friendly. “Yeah, I guess we have much in common.”
Before Mirabel could answer, half of their family burst through the door. Mamá and papá hurried her way with Luisa hot on their heels.
“Mirabel? Why aren’t you under the covers?”
Isabela groaned. “She’s not sick, mamá.”
“She’s not–” mamá repeated, clearly confused. “Please, someone tell me what’s going on because I think I don’t understand...”
Isabela opened her mouth to answer but Mirabel threw her arms in the air and looked at her parents with the most annoyed expression. "I pretended to be sick and I did it for her!”
“Mirabel don’t–”
Papá looked between them. “For her? Whatever you mean?”
Mirabel took a deep breath. “Isa doesn't want to marry Mariano."
The hell broke loose.

It’s finally time to talk about Isabela, and how I feel towards her as a character. Please keep in mind that these are all my opinions, (don’t get scared I don’t hate her lol) and whatever opinion you have is valid! I’d love to hear your thoughts on her as a whole as well, so feel free to say in the comments! Without further adue, let’s talk about her!
Tumblr media
So I definitely like Isabela. For starters, her character concept (just like all the other character concepts) is amazing. Isabela has the power to form flowers, and she is UTTERLY GORGEOUS. Like seriously, she’s beautiful, I LOVE her character design and dress, it’s all chefs kiss. While we don’t know the full story of when she got her gift, you can certainly tell that the title of beautiful flowers and her gorgeous form had a play in her role to be the perfect golden child. She is the oldest of her two sisters Luisa and Mirabel, and Abuela absolutely loves her. Alma sees her as a perfect, beautiful woman, and the whole town admires her and looks up to her. What I love about this is that while Isa doesn’t have to put much effort in to help the town like the other Madrigals do, her flowers represent how SHE needs to be, elegant, beautiful, perfect. Even though some may say it’s a lucky title, I can only imagine how overwhelming it must be to have EVERYONE love you, depend on you, and be obsessed with you. It reminds me of really famous celebrities, all that attention and praise can sometimes be too much, and as the movie shows, turns out it is. With her gift and good looks, Isabela is expected to be graceful, elegant, and most importantly, perfect. Alma admires her, but the expectations are surreal with Isabela, for not only does she always have to be perfect since that’s what’s expected of her, but she even was arranged to marry the handsomest man in town, and bring the next generation of Madrigals…..so yeah…it’s a lot, and it certainly doesn’t help that Isabela is also clearly falling into Alma’s footsteps, which btw, is another fact I love about her character. Isabela looks up to Alma, and always wants to please her, so she’ll be perfect no matter what, wether she doesn’t like it, or thinks there’s another alternative.
Of course though, since the movie is told through Mirabel’s eyes, the film approaches Isabela as nothing but a prissy stuck up mean princess. She has everything a girl could ever want, people fawn over her, everyone wants to BE her and looks up to her, she’s pretty, and she’s going to marry a handsome man. What more could she want? Because of this, Isabela and her younger sister Mirabel don’t have the best relationship. Mirabel sees her older sister as a perfect prissy girl who has no problems in the world, and Isabela sees Mirabel as someone who just doesn’t get it, someone who’s constantly in the way of her perfect facade. Since this post is about Isa herself, I’m only going to mainly be talking about her side of the relationship, but if you want to hear more about Mirabel’s side, I suggest you check out my other post! So…It’s no surprise to say that Isabela wasn’t the best sister. She was blatantly mean to Mirabel, and even though sometimes you could see where she was coming from, other times she would be unnecessarily mean, like when she rolled her eyes when Mirabel was warning everyone about the cracks, when she frowned when Mirabel walked Antonio up the steps, or when she gave Mirabel “advice”, about not trying so hard so she’s not in the way. It of course makes the audience really not like her, which I’m sure was the intention, since again, the film is told through Mirabel’s eyes. Now when it comes to why Isabela was so mean, there’s a lot you can say, since this film allows it’s audience to think for themselves, which is a good thing. You could say she was jealous because Mirabel has no gift, no expectations at all, you could say she was so angry whenever Mirabel kept thinking she had no issues when she really did, or more importantly, you could say that Isa saw Mirabel as someone who always got in her way and just didn’t understand her. That’s what the film leans towards, with Isabela saying that all Mirabel does is mess things up for her. I’m going to be honest, I don’t find that hard to believe. As said before, Mirabel and Isabela are practically polar opposites. One is the perfect golden child who’s graceful, and the other is the scapegoat, who’s imperfect and all over the place. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mirabel in the past messed up other events regarding Isa, wether it was intentional or not. However, I will say that I wish the film DID give us more examples of that, other than the dinner scene. I wish we saw more scenes of Mirabel and Isabela going back and fourth at each other, because even though I’m smart enough to know the relationship wasn’t one sided, usually whenever the two interacted in the film, it felt like it was mainly Isabela who started things, making her look like she was more in the wrong rather than the both of them, because as said before, Isabela would be mean for unnecessary measures, and sometimes Mirabel wouldn’t even be doing anything drastic that would warrant Isa’s reaction. Of course though, this film is about perspective, so before I really get into how I feel about how Isa acted towards Mirabel, let’s look at Isabela’s point of view.
Isabela is the character that you THINK has everything figured out, the character that’s perfect in every way. But of course, it just so turns out that being the perfect golden child everyone admires is NOT so easy and fun. The film eventually lets you know that Isabela does NOT like this perfect life she has, and doesn’t even want to marry the man who she was expected to. She was practically forced upon this role of being perfect, and even though she wanted more than that, she went ahead with this role anyway for years, not just because of Alma and her toxic expectations, but simply because she loves her family, and wants to do what’s best. Isa is definitely one of the many characters that had it really rough, and I feel for her, and sympathize with her. It doesn’t help of course that her younger sister thinks she has it SO good, I especially do love the part where Mirabel calls her selfish, and Isa’s response is that she’s been stuck being perfect her whole life. It’s something she would totally say, because she HAS been stuck with this role, she practically gave up her own life for the family, so it made sense why Mirabel pissed her off there. As said before, It’s such a good lesson to teach kids that even if someone may LOOK like they’re at the top of their game and happy, at the end of the day they’re HUMAN like you and me, and every human has their hardships, their pain, their demons. She also needed to learn to let her emotions out whenever she wanted, do what she was feeling in the moment since she had to keep in all in, which is another spectacular lesson. Her obvious lesson and biggest one however, was that…..NO ONE is perfect, and that’s why this role was so tough for Isabela. No human is perfect, we’re all flawed, and we’re all going to make mistakes no matter what. That’s what makes it all the more satisfying when Isabela has her wake up call, and realizes that she can do so much more than what she presented herself with. I absolutely LOVE the idea that she never knew she could grow things like carnivorous plants and cactuses, since she’s been stuck making pretty flowers all her life, stuck in her perfect facade.
Tumblr media
Thanks to Mirabel, Isa was able to open up, and let herself go. She now knows that she doesn’t need to perfect, she can embrace herself, embrace who she is and embrace her feelings whenever they rise without being afraid of what it could do. She was holding SO much back, she wasn’t able to talk to anyone and had to put a mask on for years (like her sister, a parallel I love), but now she’s free, and I love the lessons in this film of embracing who you are, EXPLORING who you are and not being afraid if others don’t like it. Her breakthrough is very powerful and important, and even though I don’t condone her actions towards Mirabel, that doesn’t mean I’m not happy for her, or think she’s a bad character. I will say that I think the film could have been better when it came to her and her sisters confrontation, I talked about this before but I mainly wish Isabela owned up to her mistakes as well, because while Mirabel needed to learn her lesson of recognizing her sisters struggles, the same didn’t correspond with Isa. It felt more like the writers were approaching only Mirabel to learn something about her sister, when in actuality they BOTH needed to, cause again, the relationship isn’t one sided. I’ve seen a lot of people wish Isabela apologized to her sister, but for me I just wish she had acknowledged the mistreatment and learned HER lesson as well, that she needed to recognize her sisters struggles and not beat her down for it. Instead, we kinda just got Mirabel learning a lesson and opening her eyes towards her sister, instead of them BOTH putting the effort in to reconcile. I feel like the writers sympathized with Isabela, and were just really happy to show how much she had secretly been holding in, and celebrate her breakthrough, which isn’t a BAD thing, but again, had Isa learned her side of the relationship towards her sister, it would have been better than it already was. Jared Bush himself confirmed that the main reason behind Isa and Mirabel’s fallout was that they just didn’t know what the other was going through and we’re too focused on their own problems, so yeah, the relationship is definitely NOT one sided. Despite me saying what I said, I certainly think EVERYONE needs to keep in mind that this broken dynamic was the fault of BOTH Isabela AND Mirabel. Acknowledging Isabela’s flaws as well as her sisters flaws are things that should coexist, rather than people saying one of them was in the wrong and the other was a victim. But as I said, even though I think the writing should have had Isabela admit her faults or understand where HER sister was coming from as well, that doesn’t mean I hate her, or think she’s a horrible person, far from it. Isa shouldn’t have treated Mirabel the way she did, she is and kinda always will be hard to watch in the film for me even with an open perspective, but she was under so much pressure, going through so many things, and was under the influence of Alma, someone who was toxic herself. While that doesn’t excuse her actions, the main thing about Encanto is not really FORGIVING people, but UNDERSTANDING where they’re coming from, and how they can fix what’s broken and improve as people, as human beings, and THAT’S what’s most important, not mainly how a person acted, but how they work to be better, how they change.
I know I talked a LOT, but that’s what I wanted to get out for Isa. I love her character concept, I love her arc, I love her song, and I love how a character like her was represented in two amazing lessons, one of exploring who you are and embracing yourself, as well as that everyone…..EVERYONE has their own hardships, even the people you think are horrible, mean, or overall not in a bad spot as you are. Even if I have my personal gripes with her and think the writing near the end of her and her sisters reconcile could have been better, it’s clear that Isa isn’t a bad person, she just slipped down the wrong path due to the family matriarch, and influencing Abuela. I definitely want to see more of her, I want to see how she’s improved, how her and Mirabel are on better terms, how she uses her powers now, and more importantly, I DEFINITELY want to explore more of perspective, wether it be during the events of the movie, the past, or after, because she’s a very interesting character. I will definitely talk about Isa more in the future, but with that said, feel free to disagree with me, and if you want, let me know YOUR thoughts on Isabela! Thank you for reading, and I’ll see you soon! 🌵🌸🌺💕

Mirabel was being clingy towards Isabela, Mirabel had a fit when she got separated from her, at the end of the day she feel asleep in Isabela room.
"I want Isabela!!!" Mirabel screamed and cried, kicking her legs to and fro as her arms waved about, desperate for Isabela to pick her up and cradle her.
"You have me--" Camilo started to say before Mirabel, in a fit, accidentally kicked him in the teeth. "NO! I DON'T WANT YOU! I WANT ISABELA!!!! WAAAAH!"
Camilo started crying too, as his lip was bleeding, but Julieta shoved an arepa in his mouth and he instantly felt better.
"I know where Isa is," Dolores said, leading Mirabel to Isabela's room. "Stay here and nap, and when you wake up she'll be there."
"Okay," Mirabel said, and Dolores stroked Mirabel's hair with her head on her lap as she slowly began to fall asleep.

so I seen a comment talking about how in this scene mirabel made them kinda angry and I agree. But I love the movie for making mirabel so dismissive of the fact isabela just admitted she hated this perfect life and felt forced to marry. Obviously you would expect the ✨perfect disney protagonist✨ to have empathy during this revelation right? Well mirabel and isabela have a strained relationship as obvious in the movie and mirabel is a sarcastic teenager. So I actually like that they added this flaw where she’s so caught up in her mission that she’s like “yeah ok whatever” to isabelas obvious anger and hurt. It shows that even though isabela just had this huge confession mirabel is still bitter about how isabela treats her. Yes it’s an unlikeable moment but I love when characters are interesting and have flaws! yes she’s the protagonist and yes she’s in the wrong!

Unfortunately some people on tiktok do not have the same opinion. I seen one reply saying it shows “mirabel treats her family badly” LIKE WHATTT😭 just because of this one little scene does not make her an asshole for the entire movie wth

conversationalist—Mira, pre/during-movie ranting about not having a Gift, feeling useless, and genuinely being alright with that :)
Have Isa be the one to take care of her, and her for once being thrown off-guard at her sister's blatant thoughts of herself :D (no villainising, I swear, just caught off guard angst/(twisted??)humour)
(sorry... it spiralled out of control a little. I hope you enjoy it anyway :P)
conversationalist: [character] rambles in their sick state.
it's hard to stay true
Mirabel woke up to the feeling of someone shaking her shoulder. "Stop," she mumbled. "I wanna sleep."
"No sleeping," replied a flat voice. "I have your medicine from mamá. Get up."
Mirabel opened her eyes, blinking in confusion. "Isa?"
"Of course it's me," Isabela huffed, brushing her hair away from her face and reaching with her hand towards a bedtable. "Who were you expecting, el Mohán?"
"What are you doing here? Where's mamá?"
"Mamá's busy."
"Papá?"
"He's helping tío Félix."
"Luisa–"
Isabela shot her a sharp look, a mug with something steaming held between her hands. "Nobody's here but me. Is there something wrong with it?"
Mirabel didn't answer. Having Isabela near, when Mirabel felt so weak and vulnerable, wasn't the best thing ever but she suspected it was better than having Abuela hover over her. At least Mirabel and Isabela talked sometimes, and as Antonio's gift ceremony was getting closer, Abuela seemed even more distant than ever, barely acknowledging Mirabel's presence most often.
So Mirabel really wasn't going to complain. It was fine. Isabela was her older sister, after all.
"Like the old times, hmm?" she mumbled while sitting up.
Isabela gave her a look as she handed her a mug. "What exactly?"
"You here, taking care of me," Mirabel shrugged, taking a sip. She couldn't recognise the taste or the smell, her nose was stuffy and her taste buds were probably not functioning as well at the moment, so she could only rely on her eyes, which wasn't possible now as well, since her glasses remained on the bed table and without them... She was quite helpless. "Like the old times," she repeated, inhaling the steamy mixture in hopes to unlock her nose a little. "When we were still kids and sisters, you know."
Isabela was silent.
Mirabel continued. "Isn't it weird?"
Once again, Isabela didn't say a word.
"We were once so close," Mirabel mumbled, taking another sip. "Hermanas, best amigas, I loved your flower crowns and our sleepovers with Lu were my favourite time. Don't tell Milo that," she added quickly, shooting Isabela, what she thought, was a stern look. "He'd never let it go."
"Sure."
Mirabel sipped on her tea (because she thought it might have been tea, though with her mamá... nothing was sure) and as the warmth spread all over her body, filling her every fibre, a pleasant feeling turned into an uncomfortable overbearing heat. She put the cup down on the bed table and laid back down, wincing.
There was a rustle of material. "Okay, so–"
"You know, I didn't mean to not get a gift."
"What?" Isabela sounded... weird.
Mirabel furrowed her eyebrows, staring at the ceiling. "I never meant to not get a gift. I wanted to be blessed as you all were. Sometimes, I still want a gift but aside from that, I'm okay. I accepted that I'm giftless and I'm fine with that, I really am," she coughed, massaging her chest with her hand. "But sometimes I wonder if things would be different if my door stayed where it was."
"Come on," Isabela replied sharply. "There's no point in thinking about it ten years later. Don't you have better things to worry about?"
"I'm not worried about it," Mirabel looked at her, confused. "Why would I be?"
There was a tilt of the head and Isabela crossed her arms over her chest. "You sound worried to me."
"I'm not."
"I don't believe you."
"You don't have to," Mirabel chuckled bitterly. "I'm telling the truth."
A scoff. "Of course."
Another short pause.
"Don't you have to be somewhere else?" Mirabel's voice cracked a little and she cleared her throat. "In town... Making flowers... Being useful in Abuela's eyes?"
"I was tasked with bringing you that tea," she replied simply.
"Yeah, and you did it."
"Yeah."
Another silence.
A deep breath. "I need to go," Isabela announced, her dress rustling with her movements. "Flower business."
"Gift business. Nothing I'm knowledgeable about."
"Mirabel..."
"Yeah?"
"Go to sleep, mamá will check on you before dinner."
Mirabel hummed, closing her eyes. "Gracias Isa," she whispered and Isabela stopped at the door. "For tea."
Isabela glanced over her shoulder. "De nada... Mira."
And with that, the oldest Madrigal grandchild left the room. And Mirabel stayed in her bed, still sick, her eyes slowly closing, her eyelids getting heavier.
She suspected the next time she woke up, it would be Luisa or her mamá next to her bed instead. And it was fine. It really was.
