why waiting on a miracle is one of my favorite (and one of the most underrated) encanto songs:

So this song in my humble opinion is one of the most under appreciated songs from the movie so I’m here to give it some appreciation! (Also the irony of the song being about being ignored and overlooked and that’s exactly what happened)

So waiting on a miracle is the classic “disney I want song” but to me this song is so much more than that. One thing that sticks out to me immediately is the fact unlike most I want songs, mirabel isn’t singing about wanting more than she already has shes singing about something she lacks but SHOULD have already. From the title most people gathered that she wants a magical gift like the rest of her family and whilst that is true I find it profound that it’s not the magic for the sake of magic she wants. It’s the appreciation from her family. All she wants is to contribute and fit in and she feels the only way she can do that is if she gets a gift. It’s also important to note unlike most I want songs mirabel doesn’t get *exactly* what she wants at the end which she mentions is a miracle. She does however end up getting her ultimate goal which is the acceptance and she doesn’t need a miracle to do that. Also with the title being “waiting on a miracle” a miracle is rare it’s thought to be something almost impossible or not even real. So for mirabels I want song to be about this shows that even she herself is aware it’s literally an impossible ask but she’s just dreaming of the possibilities if she got something as rare as a miracle.

I also found the instrumental quite genius as some have already pointed out all the madrigal songs are in 4/4 time… except this one. Waiting on a miracle is in 3/4 time as yet another subtle way to show she’s out of place. as lin manuel himself said “she’s literally out of beat with the rest of her family” so thanks for that lin the song was already sad enough but you just had to do that👍

also congratulations to mirabel for being one of the few disney characters to actually say when they aren’t ok “I’m not fineeee” I know that seems minuscule but it’s so refreshing to hear a character actually express that they are feeling negative emotions and it’s ok to express that. Especially since bottling up emotions is so common nowadays it’s a good message for the next generation <3

also waiting on a miracle kinda sorta predicts the whole movie? “I would move the mountains, make new trees and flowers grow” “I would heal whats broken show this family something new” she ended up achieving all of that in the movie’ 1. The mountains split when the house was collapsing. 2. She helped isabela discover what else she could do thus making new trees and flowers grow. 3. She basically healed the entire family which is what was broken and she showed them all they are enough without gifts! So that’s just a nice little bit of foreshadowing.

Ok now back to the sad stuff! in the lyric “I would heal whats broken” turns out she’s not referring to the entire family but herself. She views herself as broken because she didn’t get a gift and she wants to fix herself 💔 another lyric to note is “cant keep down the unspoken invisible pain” a lot of people talk about how inconsiderate the madrigals are towards mirabel but the thing is they don’t realize how it effects her. We know she can put on a hell of an act (see family madrigal song) and she herself refers to her pain as “invisible” she’s hiding it from everyone so they don’t realize how badly she’s hurting because she puts on the whole optimistic act. So another way the movie demonstrates the communication issues within the family.

And how can I forget mirabel literally telling herself at the beginning “dont be upset or mad at all” she’s quite literally telling herself to not feel those things that she’s “totally fine” I also love the fact the music is in the tune of “the family madrigal” up until she says “I’m not fine” I just thought that was a cool detail!

I’ve seen people complain about “open your eyes” x3 because it doesn’t get any louder or higher it just stays the same. Well there’s actually a reason for that! the song is called waiting on a miracle, mirabel is stuck in that position. She’s stuck waiting. It’s also important to note that the visual of her begging to her abuela to “open her eyes” and not being noticed implies that she’s been trying for a long time to be noticed but she keeps being stuck.

Also shoutout to Stephanie beatriz for the amazing acting because I could FEEL the emotion and the passion. and yes I know it’s because she’s in labour but I also believe even if she wasn’t in labour the song would still sound emotional as stephanie is a really great actress! I believe in an interview she stated she wanted to perform this song like it’s the first time mirabel is expressing these feelings to herself. Basically yeah that’s true she had been lying to herself for a decade and finally she decides to admit to herself she’s not fine she’s not happy and she wants a change. The voice crack on “I’m not fine” is actually heartbreaking and this is the moment her facade breaks entirely, and I love the vocal cry she does on “longing to shine like all of you shine” it’s just these little vocal details that add so much to the song and make it so powerful

I’ve also seen people complaining this song isn’t “belty” enough but it’s just not that type of song! mirabel is stuck in her position and if you notice in a lot of Disney movies once it reaches the climax of the i want song the protagonist comes to a decision of sorts. Take “how far I’ll go for example” she decides she’s going to sail beyond the reef and the music climaxes, she also has the triumphant high note at the end. Waiting on a miracle unlike how far I’ll go is NOT a triumphant song. The music does climax but only to emphasize mirabels false hope as she’s saying all the things she would do.

with the high note I firmly believe that there’s only one significant high note at the end for a particular reason. Like I said above usually high notes in Disney songs symbolize achievement or a sense of strength found. Mirabels high note has the opposite effect. She’s quite literally begging for a miracle in desperation only to realize she’s wishing for a fantasy. “Am I too late for a miracle” is the line the song ends on and the visual is important here too. We see the fireworks fade away and mirabel is left standing alone in the dark because it was all in her mind. (Looking at you “mirabels gift is time stopping” theorists)

So yeah I find this song to be quite unique and raw for an I want song and I think the “vent” aspect of it is what makes me appreciate it even more. It’s not sugar coated. To quote stephanie beatriz herself: “real, human, imperfect, yearning to belong and hoping for something beyond what she sees in herself: an expression of hope and fear, all wrapped in teen angst.”

So uh go stream waiting on a miracle because it’s a great song 👍(also yes this rant is a mess I’m terrible at articulating my feelings on songs but it’s also just for fun I’m like not a professional lmao)

As much as we all love Surface Pressure and We Don’t Talk About Bruno, you gatta admit that it does hurt that these two songs clearly overshadow the other ones in the film, with the fandom mainly talking about those two, and not about the other ones. This is just for me personally, but there wasn’t ONE song in the movie that I didn’t like, or thought was weak. The Family Madrigal? Fun and energetic, a great way to introduce our characters, and our main character. Waiting on a Miracle? Emotionally AMAZING, sets the feelings of our main character and starts the motivation to save her family. What else can I do? A BOP, and a good lesson and insight for those who need to embrace and discover who they are. Dos Oruguitas? Do I even need to SAY anything? And finally, All of You is really good too. I know a lot of people were dissatisfied by the ending, but the lyrics really do show that the family will heal, and that they’ve learned their lessons. I just hope people grow to appreciate the other songs, even if they don’t like them! 🎶🦋

Two separate covers of Encanto songs have me thinking about my oc and I can't stop.

First up!

Waiting on a Miracle - Stephanie Beatriz

I went with Annapantsu's cover. There's a minor lyric "Hey, I'm still a part of the family Madrigal" becomes "Hey, I'm still a part of the family after all". This one I want to turn into a pmv and here's what I'm picturing for the idea:

Happens during the Star's wand ceremony. Nova (the oc in question) watches on and wants to be happy for her but she's hesitant. While everyone celebrates Nova slips away at some point and goes to the Hall of Queens aka the Grandma Room. Here's where the music would start. She's taking a breather to calm herself and vents with only her family's tapestries there to see. The song would come to a close with Nova standing before a tapestry of the first queen. This one was created based on descriptors of the queen.

Mirabel's Villain Song - We Don't Talk About Bruno by Lydia the Bard

I don't have any thing written up and already I want to write an au of an au. In this case Nova turns on her family far earlier in the story. The Magic High Commission knows about her true lineage and treat her with indifference. Nova remains quiet and stays out of their way. She's found that Butterfly Castle has a lot of hiding spots. Another thing is the MHC like to talk when they think no one else is around. Nova learns a lot from overhearing their discussions.

At some point while Star is still very little an incident occurs that results in Nova leaving or being sent away. Her leaving I can picture the song being how it all goes down.

What your favorite song from Encanto says about you (AKA, what musical number broke your soul the most)

The Family Madrigal: If this is your favorite, you are probably the funnest person to be around. You are so passionate about the people and things you love and I adore that about you. You’re the kind of person to give your friends tours, share memories and stories about your family even when they didn’t ask for it. On the flip side, you often ignore your own problems because you feel inadequate. When anyone asks about you personally, you avoid the topic entirely and hide behind your upbeat demeanor. Remember, you are valid and it’s okay to share details about who YOU are.

Colombia, Mi Encanto: You are extremely passionate about where you come from and I adore that. Like the first one, you are super fun to be around and you just bleed positivity and light.

Waiting On A Miracle: First of all, I relate to you on a personal level. You’re often the outcast and feel left out of things that mean a lot to you. You don’t see your own potential or you feel as though nobody else does. You’ve always been underestimated and undermined so much that you have reached your breaking point. You try your best all of the time but no one appreciates it, and you’re sick of feeling useless because of it. You deserve love and appreciation just like everyone else. Let your voice be heard, you have so much to say and I’m sure the things that you express would help a lot of people including yourself. 

Surface Pressure: You need a hug, seriously. Like Luisa, you carry the world upon your shoulders and you put your entire soul into not showing any sign of being crushed by it. You work so hard for everyone else that you often forget about yourself, and your own limits. Even though you don’t express it, you wish that you could escape the expectations of reality and take a break so you don’t crumble. You feel like your worth is directly tied to what you can do for others rather than who you are as a person. You are a human, you deserve a break and relaxation. Let people help you as much as you help them, that doesn’t make you weak. Let the crushing weight gradually lay off you, I know it’s scary but trust me it is worth it. 

We Don’t Talk About Bruno: There are three possibilities for this. If this is your favorite, you probably just love the ordered chaos of this song and no matter how popular it is, you will always adore the song for what it is. The other option is, you know what it’s like to point fingers at people and not take accountability (This doesn’t make you a bad person, this just isn’t a good way to deal with your issues.). Now if this was the song that broke you, I am giving my heart to you. You know what it’s like to be the black sheep and to be blamed for everyone else’s problems. People have associated you with trouble and misfortune (or it seems that way), you feel completely demonized even when you haven’t done anything. You’re the person people talk about behind your back and it hurts so much that you isolate. Remember that even though it doesn’t feel like it, you are loved and respectable. Your mistakes don’t define you and you do not need to apologize for existing. 

What Else Can I Do?: Again, I relate to you a lot. You’ve spent your entire life being someone other than yourself in order to make everyone else happy and comfortable. You have a specific role to play though it is exhausting and unfulfilling for you, as long as the people around you are happy it’s okay. You desperately want to take control over your own life and live the way YOU want. You’re tired of feeling trapped and you deserve to break free from the mold that holds you captive. You deserve to let your guard down, make mistakes and be who you want to be. You don’t need to be perfect, imperfection is beautiful. 

Dos Oruguitas: You have such a big heart and it’s been ripped out of your body time and time again. When you fall in love, you fall hard and hold on tight so it can’t escape from you. You have been through so much pain and lost something that meant the world to you and it’s caused you to have a harsh grasp on what is currently in your life so it will never happen again. Though it is hard and it takes time, it’s okay to let go and allow yourself to heal and grow. 

All Of You: You are such a sweetheart first of all. Second, you’re the kind of person that helps bring everyone together. You are the person that people can go to when they need help. You have also reached a point where you are content with who you are along with others in your life. I applaud you for that!

we need to talk about how powerful the “waiting on a miracle” instrumental is. The song is already incredible but it’s so rare for me to actually enjoy listening to just the instrumental! The bambuco rhythm, the waltz time THE CLAPS, THE BUILD, THE MUSIC SWELL TOWARDS THE END, THE PAUSE BEFORE THE DRUMS AND THEN THE LAST SAD NOTES AHHHHHHH!?!37/72!,!(!!. Mirabels so lucky because not only does she have one of the best “i want songs” but it sounds just as insane without her gorgeous voice💘 like the encanto instrumentals in general are insane I need to make a whole post about the wecid one!

Okay, I’m a huge fan of the movie “Encanto”. I really enjoyed it, and as a psychology student, I think it was very well executed for a Disney movie. In a very personal way I loved the song “Surface Pressure”, but something occurred to me as I was listening to it recently. 

In each of the the choruses, Luisa always sings about “Give it to your sister”. This is a bit strange since she only has two sisters, neither of whom are seen to put more responsabilities on her. Most of the requests we see made of Luisa are from Alma or the townspeople, and yet she doesn’t even mention them. It’s all “sister”. Now, in my opinion, this could mean one of two things. One, Luisa has had to take on responsabilities that really should have gone to Isabela, because Isabela’s image is that of “perfection”, and something like moving garden plants or transplanting trees wouldn’t fit that, whereas it would fit the persona of strength and helpfulness. So of course, Luisa would be given those jobs instead. 

Or the second option, which is not mutually exclusive, is that she’s trying to air her grievances against Mirabel. As someone who relates quite heavily to Luisa’s inability to say no, as well as her constant feeling that everyone else’s problems are hers to fix, it’s quite likely that this is the only way she’s got to express to Mirabel how much her lack of a gift affected the rest of the family. Recall, Luisa is the sister just above Mirabel, meaning that she most likely felt the greater guilt of the two sisters. So while she’s not accusing Mirabel of intentionally putting more on her, she is finally admitting that it affected her in ways Mirabel didn’t even realize. Which honestly makes the scene after the song where Mirabel gives her a hug and tells her that she’s taking on too much quite beautiful.

And now in my series of comparisions, it's time for the big shot - We don't talk about Bruno!

* As to start I have to say, I can only imagine the absolute euforia Polish translations must’ve felt when they realized „We don’t talk about Bruno, no, no, no” can be translated literally, sinve „Bruno” in Vocativus declenses into „Brunie” and „nie” means „no” in Polish

+ „Bruno walks in with a mischevious grin” turns into „Suddenly he comes, with a little smile like a gnome” and it’s fantastic, she calls him a gnome <3

- No „mi vida” just „kochanie” :(

- ‘To flood someone’s brain’ is pretty untranslatable so instead Pepa’s brain starts to heat up

+ „Although it worked out remember that” is actually a better line than „What a joyus day but anyway” I think

= We don’t get foreshadowing of Bruno still being in the Casita (like AT ALL) but instead Dolores says that because of Bruno she can’t get rid of „this babbling” which is… a very interesting choice??? What was that supposed to mean??? I am fascinated by these implications

+ The onomatopoeia for the falling sand is the same as for shushing someone, so once again, implications

+ „The whole family considered him cursed” YES

+ „A brother to slimy rats” brother <3

* Also shotout to my sister for pointing out that it’s technically a bilingual pun since the word „brat” (brother) already has „rat” inside it

* „Feasts on your screams” is instead turned into a pun of sorts? Since the expression they use does include the word „taste” but it means just to enjoy something

+ „He profesized me a giant gut and now I’m like an elephant” hehe sucks to be you I guess

+ „He profesized me that I’ll go bald, how did he know it, just how” where’s this theory that says that half of Bruno’s visions weren’t actually visions and he’s just perceptive

+ I LOVE THIS FRAGMENT BECAUSE look, look they did such a genius thing here, the town’s part ends with „There is no rescue once something prophesizes he”, an archaic sentence structure BUT Isabela’s line starts with „He used to tell me” WHICH MAKES THE TRANSITION SO SMOOTH

+ „That my power will grow like the trunks of the trees” and she grows a tree during her song!

- No „Óye” :(

+ No „hey sis” and instead „that’s enough” and that works better for me, because I generally don’t really like slang in my movies

+ „Wujjj Bruno” WUJ BRUNO

- „Isabela someone’s here to you” no boyfriend :(

+ „Will grow like the trunks of the trees, oh no” as if she’s afraid of her power growing…

= „Let’s not talk about Bruno” less threatening but works for the interpretation that they didn’t want to talk about him because that’s a hurtful topic

+ „It’s bad that I brought up Bruno” ouch

+ Mirabel paraphrizes their last line „Not a word about Bruno” „So now not a word about Bruno”

That's it! Honestly I think this song hits even harder in Polish and the execution perfectly captures that. Now only "All of you" left to do!

While listening, I can't help myself but cry buckets of tears. It's like I'm suddenly amazed of how strong I am. I felt weak in an instance, I felt sorry for myself yet I am proud.
