Let us never forget the events of September 11th. A life changing day in history for many, that completely altered the world, making it what we know and dread today.
I mean, if Isaac II Angelos hadn't killed Stephen Hagiochristophorites, Andronikos I Komnenos would have never been deposed, and Isaac never would have himself become Holy Roman Emperor!
And imagine then how different our world would be! Obama bin Laden might never have even used dynamite to blow up the Empire State building or whatever!

Richard the Lionheart and Saladin: The Great Rivalry of the Crusades
The Third Crusade was fought between 1189 and 1192. Discover the many epic clashes between King Richard the Lionheart of England and the great Kurdish leader Saladin.
Dec 12, 2021 • By Igor Radulovic, MA History Education, BA Art History
In the late 12th century a vast area covering Egypt and Syria was in the hands of a new ruler, Saladin. Saladin had shown his power by conquering Jerusalem in 1187. After the conquest of Jerusalem, he had also shown his character as a noble warrior, who did not take revenge for the Christian massacres in the city, letting all the Christians leave peacefully. The fall of Jerusalem ultimately led to the Third Crusade
The call of Pope Gregory VIII was accepted by the most powerful European rulers of the time: the German ruler Frederick Barbarossa (who never even reached the Holy Land because he drowned in a small river in Asia Minor), the French King Philip II Augustus, and the English King Richard the Lionheart. For the first time since the crusades began, the Crusaders found themselves clashing against an excellent military leader and an even better diplomat, Saladin.
Richard the Lionheart and the Initiation of the Crusade
In October of 1187, Jerusalem fell under Muslim control, and at the end of October that year, Pope Gregory VIII issued a bull, the Audita Tremendi, calling the Third Crusade. The Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa was the first to leave, departing from Regensburg on May 11, 1189, with an organized and prepared army. The German emperor traveled to the Byzantine Empire via Hungary and Serbia. Arriving in Byzantium, Frederick did not receive a warm welcome. He also had great difficulties when he reached Constantinople as Isaac II Angelos was not in a friendly mood towards the German ruler.
At the end of March 1190, Frederick moved through Asia Minor. He followed the well-known path of Godfrey of Bouillon. The arrival of the English and French armies was expected, so the Muslims were fearful. However, one event reversed the situation in favor of the Muslim armies; Frederick Barbarossa drowned in the River Saleph on June 10, 1190. His death greatly aided the position of Muslims who were in a difficult situation.
The other two rulers started their journey much later. Philip left Messina on March 30, 1191, and arrived in Acre on April 20. Richard the Lionheart conducted an adventurous expedition on the way to the Holy Land, leaving Messina on April 10, but arriving in Syria on June 7.
The Crusader Conquest of Acre
In the summer of 1191, the French and English kings attacked the city of Acre. By July, the city was exhausted, and the garrison began negotiations. Saladin was not against peace, but the Christians were offering very strict conditions. On July 12, 1191, Acre fell into the hands of the Crusaders.
Fulfilling the preconditions for peace they soon ran into some obstacles and there were serious misunderstandings among the Crusaders. After the liberation of Acre, both the French and the English wanted to seize more power in the city and started to oppress the local population. The kings did not care that the Muslims had fulfilled the provisions of the treaty and the French king was extremely irritated.
Philip’s dislike of Richard the Lionheart fueled rumors that the English king was planning to sell the entire Christian army to the Muslims and that he was preparing to encroach on Philip’s life. Annoyed and ill, Philip left Acre and went home. The early return of the French king caused great damage to the cause of the Crusades.
Massacre of Prisoners in Acre
After the fall of Acre, the number of Muslim prisoners was around 3,000. One part of the surrender conditions was the exchange of prisoners and Saladin had agreed and was willing to pay a high ransom for the Acre garrison. Details about why they reached no agreement are not known. After Saladin released the first group of prisoners on July 24, there was a discussion about the ransom.
After losing patience and believing that the delay was inappropriate for Saladin, Richard the Lionheart decided to continue his campaign as soon as possible. He took the prisoners out in front of Acre on August 20 and killed 2,600 of them. In his letter to the Abbot of Clairvaux, Richard stated that “as the pact which he [Saladin] had agreed was entirely made void, we quite properly had the Saracens that we had in custody . . . put to death.”
Saladin’s troops watched the massacre and attacked the Christians in an attempt to save their compatriots. They were easily repulsed by the crusaders, who withdrew when the reinforcements sent by Saladin arrived. Richard’s reputation fell in the eyes of his Muslim enemies and the eyes of Saladin himself. Saladin had no choice but to do the same as Richard had done, and killed his captured crusaders.
Battle of Arsuf
The crusaders had to move further south. Richard the Lionheart planned to secure the Syrian coast, from where he could later direct his forces towards Jerusalem. Saladin certainly could not calmly watch this march through Palestine, so he followed them constantly through the hills, waiting for Richard to make a mistake. Saladin knew he could not defend certain cities, so he destroyed them.
The Crusaders reached Arsuf. In the gardens in front of the town, Saladin intended to enter into an open battle with them. On September 7, 1191, it was extremely hot near Arsuf and the crusaders were surrounded by Saladin’s army, and there was no way out. Richard the Lionheart did not want his army to suffer a similar fate to the crusader army at Hattin, defeated by Saladin, so he consolidated his ranks and prepared for their defense.
The ensuing victory at Arsuf was essential for the Crusaders. It was a great strategic defeat that cost Saladin many troops, including the best warriors from his army. The fall of Acre and the battle of Arsuf were major blows that reflected on Saladin’s prestige in the Muslim world.
Saladin: Avoiding Conflict
Saladin wanted to block the road to Jerusalem. He was by now in a difficult position. His army was losing morale, but the sultan encouraged them by telling them that they were on their land and that the Christians would have to work hard to conquer Jerusalem. Saladin became aware that he could no longer engage in open conflict with Richard, so he began evicting the Muslim population from his cities, who moved in processions towards Egypt.
Saladin avoided open conflicts and completely withdrew behind the line of defense in Jerusalem. He hoped that the attacks of the English king would eventually stop. He was sure that the interests of Richard the Lionheart in Europe would prevail, forcing him to give up the campaign and return to the west.
King Richard the Lionheart twice led the troops towards the interior of Palestine, both times reaching a small improvised fortress, which was only eighteen kilometers from the Holy City — in December 1191 and in June 1192.
On both occasions, he probably had no intention of actually launching an attack on the city, these were just tricks designed to test Saladin’s determination and they contributed to subsequent diplomatic negotiations. During these maneuvers, the king respected all the rules of medieval warfare but still failed to achieve his goal.
Negotiations Between Richard the Lionheart and Saladin
Diplomacy ultimately occupied a very important place in the Third Crusade, unlike in previous conflicts, where there were no negotiations and all disputes were resolved by force of arms. Negotiations were used to assess the enemy’s fighting strength and morale, but also for deception.
Instead of Saladin, Richard the Lionheart met with the sultan’s brother and right-hand man Al-Adil during long and frequent negotiations. Richard the Lionheart was a much better and more cunning diplomat than Saladin thought. The final negotiations came after the Battle of Jaffa in August 1192. Richard, who was in a difficult situation and worried about his English possessions, used all his means to enter into relations with Saladin.
Finally, Richard the Lionheart, who, by staying longer in the Middle East risked losing his crown, concluded a treaty with Saladin on September 1, 1192. This treaty gave him a small coastal belt from Jaffa to Tyre. Jerusalem remained under Muslim rule. In October 1192, Richard the Lionheart left Syria. Although both rulers planned to continue the war, this did not happen. Richard even spoke publicly on several occasions about his plans to return to the Holy Land, but in the end, none of those big plans came to fruition. In this way, the conflict between these two great medieval rulers came to an end.

The Theodosian Walls (Land walls) of Constantinople (now Istanbul). All pictures here were taken by Nicholas V. Artamonoff during his expeditions in the area between 1935-1938. These are the famous brick walls that withstood numerous attempted sieges before being utterly annihilated by the cannons of the Turks.
Artamonoff’s description goes as follows:
“Istanbul has had several walls throughout its long history. Most of the existing walls were constructed in the 5th century CE, under Theodosius II. The walls were partly destroyed in an earthquake in 447 CE, but were rebuilt and strengthened, and additional fortifications were constructed. The Theodosian walls surrounded an area of 12 square kilometers, stood 12 meters high, and had 96 towers that were about 18 meters high. The walls also contained 9 main gates and a number of smaller military gates. The Walls of Blachernae were built to defend the suburb of Blachernae in the northwestern corner of the city. and consist of four single walls built in different periods. In 627, under the reign of Heraclius, a single wall was built as a defense against the great Avar siege. In 814, Leo V, the Armenian built a new wall in front of the Heraclean wall to strengthen the defenses against Bulgarian raids. In the 12th century, Manuel Comnenos, built a wall connecting to the Theodosian walls to give additional protection to the Palace of Blachernae. The Comnenean wall was connected by a later wall (possibly under Isaac II Angelos) to the Heraclean wall.

Byzantine Imperial Family & House of Babenberg: Princess Theodora Angelina of Byzantium
Theodora’s parentage is uncertain. She was probably a niece of Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos. Most likely her mother was one of his sisters but it could also be possible that her father was Isaac’s brother John. Whoever her parents were, she was raised at court in Constantinople.
She was born into turbulent times. Rebellions and wars dominated the last days of the Byzantine Empire. In 1203, when Theodora was either in her late teens or early twenties, she left Constantinople for Vienna to marry Duke Leopold VI of Austria and Styria. Leopold was the grandchild of Byzantine princess Theodora Komnene. The celebrations in November of this year are said to have been magnificent. Noteworthy guests were the poet Walther von der Vogelweide, who might have even performed there, and probably the unknown writer of The Song of the Nibelungs. According to historian Karl Brunner, the wedding inspired the fictional wedding of Kriemhield to King Etzel. So many guests wanted to attend Theodora’s and Leopold’s wedding that not all of them fit into the city.
But why would a Byzantine princess marry the ruler of Austria? The reasons were simple. Austria hoped for a strong alliance against the Hungarians who threathened their border and the Byzantine Empire promised themselves a better relationship with and the participation in a crusade of the German King Philipp of Swabia, who was already married to Theodora’s cousin Irene Angelina. But all of this was rendered moot when the Byzantine Empire broke apart.
Not too much is known about Theodora during the lifetime of her husband. The couple had seven children: German Queen Margarete, Duchess Agnes of Saxony, Hereditary Duke Leopold of Austria, Hereditary Duke Heinrich the Cruel of Austria, Landgravine Gertrude of Thuringia, Duke Frederick II the Quarrelsome of Austria and Styria and Margravine Constantia “Konstanze” of Meißen. Theodora most likely used her influence when it was time to find a bride for her son Frederick. It was most likely her doing that he married Princess Eudokia Laskarina of Nicaea. However the marriage did not last long.
Theodora did not really have luck with her sons. Her oldest and favourite son died when he fell of a tree while playing. She never really got over this loss. Heinrich rebelled against his father when he was away and chased his mother out of her home in Hainburg. Frederick, who was described by contemporaries as talented but arrogant and rampant, took away all his mother’s possessions and threatened to cut off her breasts if he ever caught her. Theodora fled to Austria’s archnemesis Bohemia where she could put her trust in her cousin’s and the German king’s daughter Kunigunde of Hohenstaufen who was Queen consort of Bohemia at the time. From there, she went to Kunigunde’s father and complained about her son. In 1235, at the Imperial Diet in Mainz an imperial court decided in favour of Theodora and she returned to Austria. When Frederick died in 1246, the first House of Austria aka the House of Babenberg ceased to exist in its male line.
In her last years, Theodora became a nun at Lilienfeld Abbey. She died either on June, 22nd or 23rd in the year 1246. It is very likely that she inspired a famous German lullaby called Heia popeia. The ancient Greek words Hoide o paide mean Sleep, o child which over the years became Heia popeia with the common people.

DC: The High-School AU: The Series: The Staff (the musical)
So I finally cast the school staff and teachers for my DC High School AU, which I thought some of you would have some fun with! I took the subject list from a fairly fancy looking private school, because only schools you have to pay for have their subject lists online, so I’m probably offering way more classes than your average state school, but hey, it’s my AU and I wanted to cram in as many supervillains, obscure heroes, and bad jokes as possible.
Admin & Staff
Principle - Amanda Waller
Deputy Principle & Treasurer - Noah Kuttler (the Calculator)
Nurse - Myra Mason (she was Dr Midnite’s nurse and love interest in the 40s & 50s, then got fridged, but I’m unfridging her and giving her a job with much better survival prospects)
Councillor - Ethel Peabody (she’s a psychiatrist from the Gotham TV show, and also in my headcanon, Amanda Waller’s sister)
Librarian - Stanislaus Johns (The Librarian. I considered bookworm for this job but he’s literally called the Librarian, what was I supposed to do, not use him?)
Admin Staff - Laura Conway (Superman supporting cast and occaisional vampire), Mabel Martin (Riddler’s secretary), Theresa Collins (Goldstar, also Booster Gold’s secretary)
Business
Loren Jupiter (aka Mr Jupiter the richest and therefore most thrustworthy man in the world) - Business 101, Business Law, Entrepreneurship
Wesley Dodds (Sandman) - Business Communications
Annabeth Chamberlain (Brimstone) - Marketing, Hospitality & Tourism (she doesn’t work in tourism, but I figure anyone who can waitress while also having the power to set people on fire and damn them to hell and keeps her job probably knows a whole lot about customer service)
Family & Consumer Science
Miss Tribb (Lobo’s childhood teacher who inexplicably survived the extinction of their species) - Childhood Developement, Early Childhood Education
Neil Richards (The Mad Mod) - Texiles/Sewing, Fashion
Tenzil Kem (Matter-Eater Lad) - Food & Nutrition
Finance
Noah Kuttler (The Calculator) - Personal Finance
Foreign Languages
Matron Bertinelli (Nu52 Huntress, who I’m declaring a sepperate character and the aunt of pre-52 Huntress because they’re radically different characters and I like both of them) - ASL, Italian
Chang Jie-Ru (Nu52 Yo-Yo) - Chinese, AP Chinese
Yolanda Montez (Wildcat II) - Spanish, AP Spanish
Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) - Latin
Health Sciences
Myra Mason - Emergency Medical Responder training
Charles McNider (Dr Midnite) - Anatomy & Physiology, Health Class
IT
Brian Durlin (Savant) - Computer Programming, Web Dev
Jennifer Lyn-Hayden (Jade) - Digital Art 101
Arnold Wesker (Ventriloquist) - 3D Animation, 3D Graphics (I don’t know why but the idea of Wesker as an animator just tickled me. Obviously his real passion is stop-motion, but he learnt 3D because there were more jobs)
English (the fancy private school called this ‘language arts’ which is so prentious it makes me feel slightly nauseous)
Wesley Dodds (Sandman) - English Language, AP English Language
Rac Shade (Shade the Changing Man) - English Literature, AP English Literature
Chloe Sullivan (the worst character in the Smallville TV show, a hotly contested position) - English Language, Communications 101, supervises the School Paper and the Yearbook
Shelly Gaynore (The Whip III) - Englist Literature, Creative Writing
Basil Karlo (Clayface) - Intro to Shakespeare
Nick Scratch (officially his supervillain name is just Scratch, but I refuse to consider that a code-name, looking at you Drake) - Communications 102: Public Speaking
Mathematics (which has a 100% villain make-up, which seems accurate from what I remember of high-school maths)
Noah Kuttler (The Calculator, because I think I’m funny) - Pre-Calc, Calculus, AP Calculus
Harlan Graves (The Underbroker) - Stats, Algebra 1, Algebra 2
Angelo Bend (Angle Man, becuase I know I’m funny) - Geometry, Trigonometry
PE (I realise this is probably too many PE teachers but there are a lot more caonical althetes than just about any other job in the DCU except maybe scientist)
Lawrence Crock (Sportsmaster, you knew this was coming) - Gym, Weight Training, coaches Baseball, Basketball, Tennis & Hockey
Lisa Snart (Golden Glider) - joint-coaches Cheerleading, coaches the Drill Team, Wrestling
Randy Hanrahan (Stallion) - PE, joint-coaches Cheerleading & Cross-Country, coaches Football
William Everett (Amazing Man) - PE, joint-coaches Cross-Country, coaches Track & Field
Matron Bertinelli (Huntress, sort of) - coaches Soccer & gymnastics
Performing Arts
Lisa Snart (Golden Glider) - Dance
Hartley Rathaway (Pied Piper) - Music 101, Music Theory, Composition, teaches Guitar & Percussion
Isaac Bowin (The Fiddler) - Music 101, AP Music Theory, leads Jazz Band, Orchestra, Marching Band
Siobhan Smyth (Silver Banshee) - part-time, leads the Choir and teaches singing
Basil Karlo (Clayface) - Theatre, Theatre 101
Simon Trent (Grey Ghost) - Theatre, Theatre 101, Film Studies
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle) - Theatre Tech
Mary Louise Dahl (Baby-Doll, from B:TAS) - Film Studies, Video Production
Betty Bates (Lady-at-Law, who is technically owned by DC now due to corporate buy-outs) - Debate
Science (do you have any idea how hard it is to pin down areas of specialisation for comic book scientists? TNT is on this list entirely because he’s the only actual honest-to-god professional chemist I could find)
Kirk Langstrom (ManBat) - Biology, AP Biology
Pamela Isley (Poison Ivy) - Biology, Environmental Science
Thomas “Tex” Thomas (TNT) - Chemistry
Achilles Milo (Professor Milo, again not really much of a code name) - Chemistry, AP Chemistry
Will Magnus (I refuse to even dignify it as a code-name) - Physics, Earth Sciences
Ray Palmer (The Atom) - Physics, AP Physics
Adam Strange (DC is just doing this to fuck with me, personally) - Astronomy
Social Studies & Humanities
Barbara Minerva (Cheetah) - World History
Maxie Zeus (ffs) - World History, AP World History (fun fact, Maxie was canonically just a normal history teacher before he got lightning powers, became convinced he was Zeus incarnate, and set out to become a criminal, making him my favourite DC mobster by a country mile)
Terry Long (aka one of the only characters to really deserve to get fridged) - US History, AP European History
Eobard Thawne (every code-name he has is stupid, but lets just go with Reverse-Flash as the least awful option) - US History, AP US History
Nick Scratch - US Government, AP US Government, AP Comparative Politics
Rex Tyler (Hourman) - AP Art History
Magdalene Kyle-Burton (Sister Zero, she’s a sometimes-nun and a sometimes-sister to Catwoman) - Comparative Religion
Michael Carter (Booster Gold) - Economics, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics
Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) - Psychology (there is exactly one heroic psychiatrist in all of comics, and I’d already used Dr Fate elsewhere. Scarecrow seemed like the least bad option of the remaining pool for being around children, and he does at least have teaching experience)
Adam Strange - Sociology
Betty Bates (Lady-at-Law) - Law
Richard Occult/Rose Psychic (it’s complicated, lets just say Dr Occult and leave it at that) - part-time, Criminal Justice
Technology & Engineering
Ted Kord (Blue Beetle) - Electronics, CAD, Woodworking
John Henry Irons (Steel) - Engineering, Metalworking
Will Magnus - Robotics
Visual Arts
Linda Lee/Danvers (she’s Supergirl, but I’m making her a different character from Kara Danvers/Kent because the DCU is really short on artists and I needed someone to teach the damn class, although the only thing that really makes her distinct from other supergirls is that she fucked a horse that one time and IDK how that will translate into a personality...) - Ceramics, AP Studio Art: 3D Design, Art 101
Rex Tyler (Hourman) - Graphic Design, Drawing, AP Studio Art: Drawing
Jack Knight (Starman) - Painting, AP Studio Art: 2D Design, Art 101
Jennifer Lyn-Hayden (Jade) - Photography
So there you go - I’ll be honest I still don’t really understand how high-schools in the USA work, and I have no idea what Design studio art even is so I kind of assigned those ones at random, but now it’s done and cannot be changed.
As always this universe is open to prompts so if you want a chapter focussing on any of these characters just drop me an ask or a comment and I’ll see what I can do. Making Dr Occult & Rose Psychic a single gender-fluid person is already on my list to do, since that’s who I thought they were for a longest time when I started reading comics and I’m still kind of annoyed that isn’t canonically what’s going on.

We're coming up on a brother reunion real soon right? So can you do a Red Talk on John and Arthur's relationship?
I love me some Red Dead Brodemption, and I’m looking forward to the reunion, and how that shapes things after, as much as y’all.  I’m not certain what’ll happen so this should be fun.  As to when, I’m pretty sure it’ll happen by the end of Chapter XIII (Horseshoe Overlook II).  As usual, I’m kind of taking the story as it comes and letting it find its own flow, and forcing the reunion in earlier just didn’t feel right.
OK, so we have a few confirmed pieces: John is 10 years younger than Arthur (given 1863 and 1873 birthdates), that they found John in Illinois when he was 12, that Abigail joined in 1894 at age 17 (1877 birthdate), quickly got pregnant, and gave birth to Jack in 1895 (4 years old in 1899).  John tried to deny paternity and generally shunned the responsibility of being a father, and at some point between 1895 and 1899, also disappeared for a whole year.  Arthur is still incredibly pissed about this.
My meta is that John’s sudden adoption threw a 22-y-o Arthur into a panic.  He’s clearly always struggled with feeling insecure and worthless, and Dutch and Hosea suddenly fawning over this new boy, talking about educating him, making him one of the family, etc. means he’s failed.  He’s not lived up to what they needed him to be, and so they’re turning to someone who can replace him.  It’s not pretty that a grown, even if very young, man is threatened by a child, but given Arthur’s traumas and mental issues, it’s understandable.
So he started to act out.  Went chasing jobs, bringing in more money, to prove that a man, not a boy, was what Dutch needed.  That he was still worth his place.  Dutch loved it, of course, and probably took advantage of Arthur’s desperation and willingness to do about anything to prove himself.
That cost him his relationship with Mary as she saw he wasn’t moving further away from the gang like he’d promised, but sinking even further into criminal life.  I also HC that shortly after this, Arthur and Eliza had their lonely drunken hookup that resulted in Isaac.  So his life pretty much turned into a disaster for a few months there in 1885 because he was running around in a total panic.
He was likely kind of an asshole to John early on, because if you’re deathly afraid of being replaced by this kid, why would you be nice?  But being stuck together for the winter, they learned to get along.  Arthur saw that he wasn’t being kicked out.  John was the golden boy, the new favorite, and that wasn’t going to change.  Dutch and Hosea still valued him for what he could do.  He resigned himself to being the workhorse, and earning his place via his skills.  Plus Arthur being Arthur, he’s a soft touch, especially for kids and animals, and so he’d have seen more than a little of himself in this feral little gremlin.  I think he switched pretty quickly, once he made his peace with being somewhat replaced, to being John’s fiercest defender.
On John’s side, he initially hated Arthur a bit too, because a grown man picking on you when you’ve been let down and hurt by adults in your life already, cool.  Once things softened, and John started to settle in and soften his own trauma-based armor, he idolized Arthur.  This former illiterate street rat, just like John, who’d become this formidable man who seemingly could do everything, and do it well.  He had Dutch and Hosea’s absolute trust, rather than being an ignorant kid who couldn’t even read.  Everything John wanted to be, really.
So for a good while I think the two of them had a very close-knit relationship.  There was always something unequal about it, because John was a kid still, but they were brothers and would have done anything for each other.  As you get past 1890 and John turning 17 or so, things started to shift again.  Arthur would always be more capable, wiser, and older, but now John was becoming an adult himself.  They could start to relate a bit more as peers, and John in particular really craved that.  Arthur’s respect and praise was probably the one he wanted most, because it was so hard earned.
1890-1894 were probably promising years for their relationship.  Arthur lost Eliza and Isaac in 1890, and took that as a sign.  He quietly resigned himself to a life of nothing but the gang, and worked even harder.  John started to grow up.  Then the “Jackcident” happened, and things went to shit again.  Arthur had lost a family only a few years before, and he saw John making a similar mistake, but even worse--unlike Eliza who wouldn’t join the gang or marry Arthur, Abigail was right there.  John doing the right thing would cost him so little, but he refused.
Things deteriorated from there, and John hid his overwhelmed insecurities behind a slut-shamey “The kid’s probably not even mine”, and saw Arthur turn into a coldly judgmental asshole again about it.  What did Arthur know about this anyway?  He’d been chasing the same unattainable woman for years (or so John thought) who’d made it clear she wouldn’t have him.  But fine, if he couldn’t have Arthur’s respect, maybe it wasn’t worth having anyway, the judgmental prick.  If Arthur can’t forgive him when he’s this cold-hearted clay statue who doesn’t care to understand what love and relationships are like outside of storybooks, screw him.
As for Arthur, his inability to straight talk John about Eliza and Isaac meant he just turned frosty and angry, and it stayed that way.  Then John left, and it got even worse, because that meant John had betrayed the gang, betrayed his son and the woman who’d borne his child, and he’d also betrayed Arthur and all the affection he had for John, and the hopes that John would turn out better than him.
Arthur’s still pretty pissed about this and John returned at least a year prior to Chapter 1, so he is absolutely holding a grudge.  Plus John’s every bit as resentfully defensive about it as Arthur is frostily judgmental.  That to me speaks to them having to have had a really close relationship before John’s shunning his responsibilities to Jack and Abigail caused this rupture, because you honestly don’t react that strongly, or passive-aggressively, to someone you don’t give a shit about.  You tend to ignore them totally.
Chapter 4′s “Angelo Bronte, A Man Of Honor” (RIP Bronte glitch, I miss you) is really a huge turning point, and seems to show how things used to be between them.  John’s trying hard to relate to Arthur in that mission, admitting his failures as a father, admitting his fear for Jack.  Arthur responds readily to that admission of responsibility and concern, like he’s been waiting for exactly that all this time, because he has.  It ends with a moment of them returning to the awkward impasse they’ve been in for years, with John’s inability to even say to Arthur what it means to him that he helped rescue Jack beyond “Thank you”, after finally admitting his failures openly.  But then we return again to a glimpse of something brighter with Arthur’s quiet, “I understand...go be with your family.”  There’s a sense of much-needed forgiveness in that.
It starts really paying off in Chapter 6, because it’s finally there that we see the two of them able to stand there and talk to each other as grown men, like they never had a chance to do before.  Though there’s the interesting note to that whole thing that even as they’re relating as men, it also returns to where it began: Arthur giving so much of himself to protect and teach John, and John idolizing Arthur as the standard by which he measures himself (and all too often falls short.)
But there’s something left still unfinished there, because the relationship is still unbalanced.  It needs John to kick off Arthur’s boots he’s been trying so hard to wear all these years, so to speak, and finding his own that fit and becoming his own man, and Arthur being able to slip off the yoke of carrying so much weight for John while he continues to grow up.  So yeah, there’s some work left to accomplish in 1907.  ;)

Renaissance Plays how I imagine them in alternate history
King Arthur’s War: Lucius Hiberius (unsubtle) is Philip II, Leo is Pope per Pierre de Langtoft (there was a Pope Leo in 1605) who blesses the Spanish... Roman invasion of Britain. Arthur is Henry VIII, Guinevere is Elizabeth, Constantine is Scottish... somehow. Mordred lusts after Gwen and might be Essex or embodiment of incestuous marriages (Henry VIII’s first marriage was apparently deemed that). Gwen ends up handing Arthur’s sceptre to Constantine. Of course we just end it with Constantine speaking lines about how Britain, under one ruler, will not submit to Rome. And we won’t mention any of Constantine’s nephews... (I am quite surprised I cannot find something like this in Elizabethan/Jacobean lit., you’d think it would have been perfect.) I think there is a version where Caradoc, a name-twisted Cador, is Constantine’s father but I can’t find it, might be forced that Constantine’s father is Scottish. Or at least enough that we know who he is.
Philip IV: He’s Philip II! Clement is his lickspittle. Marlowe writes it however so Philip comes across as awesome with his over-the-top evil, disdaining all ideas of religion in a Machiavelli/Tamburlaine-like way and outright saying he just made up story of corruption so he could get rich. Play runs into trouble because it looks like attack on dissolution of Monasteries, hence why emphasises Pope advises Philip to do this. Templars anachronistically have Protestant ideas. Comparisons to The Massacre at Paris made. Also Mary burning Protestants. Could make Philip’s daughter Isabella somehow Mary Queen of Scots but show her son Edward III as noble and standing up for Britain... er, England.
Tumblr media
The Rule of Heraklonas: Heraclius could be Henry VIII. Martina is Katharine/Mary I/Mary Queen of Scots (depending on when play comes out), down to the questioned legality of marriage. Heraklonas... general bad guy, probably portrayed as thug controlled by his mother because of sexism of plays. Constantine III... Edward VI? Constans II is Elizabeth/James I. Patriarch Pyrrhos is a Pope.
The Tragedy of Andronikos I Komnenos: Murders his way to power with aid from Papal envoy. Based on Tudor image of Richard III, down to lusting after Princess ahead of him in line of succession and murdering young kinsman to take power. We iron over any little complications in the succession, though might show Andronikos encouraging trouble between his cousins to weaken them. Isaac II Angelos is Henry VII.
Apologies to anyone who is Spanish or Catholic.
