if Polaris ends up having his own unique genetic mutation that can be passed down, do you think you'll end up breeding for it on purpose? (assumng it doesn't come with health issues)
Yes and no- "doesn't come with health issues" would require observing Polaris for his entire lifespan before breeding him which is, for obvious reasons, impossible.
The first bronze bird with vitiligo (at the time, called "progressive pied") didn't have health problems as a young bird, and the people who had a say over breeding the bird didn't realize it was an autoimmune condition (despite that. I told them. but I was "new" and The Old Keepers don't listen to New People even though half of them have no idea what the fuck they're talking about when it comes to the science side of genetics/breeding but. I digress). By the time he started having health issues and losing vision, the condition had already been spread to the point that people now have to be careful purchasing bronze birds, because purposeful efforts were made to breed for "progressive pied," which spread it throughout the bronze lines in a lot of places. This also means lines which include bronze (hazel, indigo, platinum, and by proxy purple and opal since those are the other colors in those double colors) are at risk of developing vitiligo.
Now, I have Eclipse (Polaris' likely mother) and my friends in NC have Orion, Major, and had Minor (who passed away from an unrelated infection last fall), and none of them are ill at all, nor showing any sign of degeneration in functionality (like eyesight), nor are Orion's pied markings increasing significantly (all "pied" birds can have slightly different white per year due to feathers being colored by slightly different pigment cells from year to year, but the white shouldn't spread/increase significantly). So that's good.
I'll be watching Polaris' sons as long as I have them (and for the record, he produced them before I noticed this difference in his feathers, because he still had a 2yo train and feathers, it's only after this fall molt that the weird ones started growing in), and Polaris himself. Since he's a blackshoulder, his pattern is going to change significantly until he's around 6 years old. This is normal for BS; typically the marble pattern on their feathers solidifies into solid colors. You can see the marble pattern on the top edge of this feather, and the solid color on the bottom.
Tumblr media
That solid color should spread upward and take over the whole feather by 6 years old. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's considered a pattern flaw for it to not finish transferring. Indie's BS markings went all the way up his shoulder to his body, the way it's supposed to do, which is a good quality.
I don't know if Polaris' marble will disappear entirely, since his father wasn't BS, just split. I don't know if his variegation will take over instead, or split the feathers or what. I don't know if the variegation will disappear by the time he's 6, which would mean it's probably just an aberrant BS pattern. If it stays, it could still just be an aberration of the white eye gene. But, silver pied came out of an aberrant WE gene.
So... I don't know. I will have to weigh the risks depending on how he develops over the next three years. If I think it's an aberration on a safe gene like BS or WE or a combo or something, then I may see if it will transfer on purpose. It would be really cool to found a new gene, but it would be REALLY UNCOOL to start a fresh health problem. Either way, I'm going to document it carefully.

headcanon: insecurity was something they made sure went away. Ft Dazai, Ranpo, and Chuuya. Masterlist Please look at the request rules in masterlist before requesting. Hiii guys guess who is back? here is another headcanon since I was quite absent here love you guys
Tumblr media
Dazai:
Tumblr media
Insecurity: s/o with Vitiligo [disorder that causes patches of skin to lose pigment or color]
Tumblr media
Initially, he didn't seem to tell you that your skin was perfect the way it was, but seeing you desperately cover up the duel patch on your skin with makeup, (remind you it wasn't helping much ) just maybe broke him inside.
You were insecure about your skin.
"why belladonna, i love the way your skin creates two parts, and how beautiful it is under the sun shining uniquely unlike others”
He makes sure to complement you every time you come to his view.
Honestly, I could totally see him kiss the light patches on your skin to tell you there was nothing wrong about bearing two colors, so beautiful on your skin.
You would see other people, and would cover your hands in despair of the internal jealously you felt towards them thinking why you had to own such a thing, and why couldn't you look normal like others.
Dazai on the other hand, make sure you don't try cover up your arms as he would take your hands, look at you deep in eyes and silently convey the message of i love you.
He doesn't care wherever you are bet it be a park or café, he would hold your face and run his thumb over the patches and kiss them telling its beautiful.
He would never back down if you wish to have a treatment, after all your happiness meant the world to him.
But he would totally tell you along the lines of "NOO- WHYYY" and "I will miss them, the one on your hand was names Jaiden, I will miss him"
He loves you a lot, and your physical beauty doesn't estimate his love for you.
Tumblr media
Ranpo:
Tumblr media
Insecurity: s/o who has body dysmorphia
Tumblr media
It didn't take late for him to understand the situation you were going through.
"Ranpo do I look Okay??" "You look beautiful as always Y/N"
He doesn't confides you first, but when he starts to see how you would stop eating and over exercising, he was worried.
"Y/N, why aren't you eating? Here have a bite!" "Sorry Ranpo I think am gaining weight" "But you are healthy? Y/N and look perfectly fine!" "I don't know Ranpo, I look weird"
You actually vented all out, from your body dysmorphia to your problems and he listened>>>
You constantly checked if you looked fine, and Ranpo would always come and hug you from behind telling how much you look perfect while placing his head on your neck.
You would be staring at the daily magazine, looking at all models so beautiful and just perfect, and you then would be hearing Ranpo say, “but it doesn't make me love you less, i love for the personality, not for the physique. I will still love u if u turn into a worm"
despite all, he makes sure you eat and stay healthy.
Whenever you feel down, he will make sure you get tons of hugs and playful kisses on cheeks.
Can imagine him whispering all fluff words as he holds you in front of the mirror.
Lowkey thinks he will give butterfly kisses on stomach.
Tumblr media
Chuuya:
Tumblr media
insecurity: s/o who is insecure about her body hair
Tumblr media
Normally, he isn't the one to state or even observe such things with his S/O but oh boy some situations aren't avoidable.
(normalizing the fact you didn't shave or your hair growing hate is high.)
You were casually asking him if the outfit you wore was nice, when you looked at your arms and legs and that dropped your mood.
Now Chuuya didn't wanted to intervene but he asked why did u changed your outfit to which you responded with "Just felt like it"
Later he started to notice how you would try to pick out your forearm hair, and how desperate you were to cover up your legs and trying not to wear shorts despite the fact it was very hot summer in the city.
He asked why you were plucking out hair from skin when your told him you just didn't like your body hair and how you looked weird with it.
"isn't that normal? Your physique doesn't define u"
He is the best person if you want to boost moral confidence.
Actually doesn't mind if you decide to shave, after its your body, and you had the rights to anything you want with it.
He would make sure you don't feel out of place under any circumstances
If you ever pluck out hair, he would remove your hand and then intervene it with yours, indicating the habit wasn't good for you.
"Hey, look its fine, no one here is going to judge just because you own body hair"
his comfort speeches>>>
He gives very good forehead kisses.
Tumblr media
hii hope you liked the headcanon....still working on the requests i am getting and received and holy moly i love how you people get the brains to think like that. Sorry if my writing may look a off lately, cause i seriously cant think straight these days. For people who ever or are suffering from any mental or physical disorder, remember your disease doesn't define you, because its your soul which cannot be broken by any means. Find yours because its deep inside you, maybe hidden but never fragile. I think should start giving ted talks

nottemdude HCs pls do ( ̄︶ ̄)
YES THANK YOU IM SO NORMAL OVER THEM
●Not Important has some serious self esteem issues that he likes to pretend he doesn't have (but totally does). Hence the long hair that pretty much hides his face and the overall negative outlook on life. Postal Dude on the other hand, while having his schizophrenia, doesn't nearly suffer as badly as he did when he was younger (Postal 1). Not Important also doesn't take compliments from anyone, not even his parents (if he still talked to them), but if Dude says something nice about him? Well, that's okay. He cannot say thank you to save his life, but he quietly grumbles to himself and flushes under his bangs.
●Speaking of bangs! Very rarely does Not Important actually tie them up in a ponytail. I love the concept but realistically I know it doesn't happen all that often, unless its New York summer.... Postal Dude loves how Not Important looks though, and will encourage seeing his face to eternity.
●If Not Important survives the events of Hatred: Postal Dude would totally try to get Not Important the help and therapy he needs because BOY does he need it. I love imagining Postal Dude driving Not Important to his weekly session and sitting with him in the waiting room so Nottem doesn't break into a panic attack while waiting (I'm projecting). Postal Dude is just a really supportive boyfriend overall <3
●After seeing the stickynote doodle from Postal 4 (and then crying over said stickynote) I have accepted it as canon that Not Important is a complete lovesick fanboy of Postal Dude, more specifically P1 Dude, and that's how they met in the first place! Before carrying out the events of Hatred, Not Important knew he planned on not being alive after, so he sought out finding his idol and at least meeting him before kicking the bucket and all that. Wasn't expecting too much from the encounter, but it turned out that current day Postal Dude was way nicer than anyone else in Not Important's life, and it acted almost like a wake-up call for him. Nottem thought he was slick, but his very obvious crush on his idol was very apparent to Postal Dude, but Dude was nice enough to not mention it until later.
●As for more domestic things between them, I feel like Postal Dude has to take initiative far more often, and it almost always ends up in a flustered Not Important. See, when Postal Dude blushes, he looks fairly normal, but because Not Important is lacking any pigment (his ass does NOT go outside), any color on his cheeks is incredibly noticeable and BRIGHT. Postal Dude, ever the tease, points it every time, putting on a baby voice and cooing at Not Important, saying things like "I knew you were human!" and other things of the like.
●Last thing for now because I think I've proven my nottemdude obsession, favorite things about each other! Not Important madly respects Postal Dude's resilience and how he's managed to cope with his past and his mental illnesses. Not to mention how attractive Dude is of course. Postal Dude sees a lot of himself in Not Important and wants only the best for him, plus he loves Nottem's endearing quirks and habits.

yeah no it’s time to be normal, guys. your characters are great and it’s always a joy to see them.
I’m curious: do you think glass squid and similar species would still be translucent as inklings?
LOL thanks! also good question i was just having this discussion some time ago. it's a really, REALLY good question and i went on a rant about it (in real life), so i'll just try to summarize that rant....
Logically.... no they shouldn't be. From what I understand a lot of glass squid are transparent and/or translucent because it's a very effective way of camouflage to just not be visible basically at all. On the surface of the ocean where sunlight hits you though? i feel like that would be the opposite of good. The only way I could see glass squids being transparent or translucent in any way would be if they were STRICTLY nocturnal, and even in that case I'd expect them to have SOME skin pigmentation.
In the case of glass squid being Inklings meaning they also utilize ink and ink camouflage, they would also have a giant neon ink sac that sort of completely undermines the point of having transparent skin in the first place. Unless the ink sac was pigmented in a way that doesn't let the neon color of the ink through, I guess. I do feel like if glass squids made it into Splatoon, they WOULD be kept translucent though, given that it's kind of their whole thing? I'd expect their skin to be translucent enough to make it easy for them to REALLY camouflage into ink... but you'd still be able to see their organs, so in a way that's literally less effective than just having ink-colored skin. This is something that they COULD work around by having ink-colored pigmentation on the organs themselves so they match the color of the ink, though. So idk, I'd maybe say some parts of their body might have sparse pigmentation to where you might see veins and organs, but they wouldn't be fully clear. And even with sparse pigmentation they would probably be the squid equivalent of vampires with not being able to be out in the daylight.
TL;DR I don't really dedicate time thinking about glass squids or octopuses because they're the kind of species that wouldn't make sense to keep their core traits as surface animals, and the kind of species where if you remove these core traits, then there goes the whole point of having that species around. Same reason I don't really touch on a lot of squid species that are VERY similar if not identical to other common squid species (you couldn't really tell them apart from "normal inklings", so there's very little reason to include them when they would look IDENTICAL and would probably be part of a species complex in-universe). So idk that hopefully answers something

Tell me about corals?
Many tropical coral species are colorful because of a single cellular algae that live in their tissue called zooxanthellae. The algae photosynthesizes and provide coral with the majority of their energy via the extra sugars the algae produce in this process, but corals also can absorb nutrients directly from the water and ALSO capture and eat small prey. Which means they were given a list of ways to gain energy and hit "all of the above".
Whenever you hear about coral bleaching, it refers to a stress response that causes the coral to reject their zooxanthellae. There are multiple reasons this can happen but heat and pollution are the most common. (The heat is why coral bleaching events often happen in the hottest months of the region).
Bleaching isn't the same as death, but they can look similar. A bleached coral does not have the pigment from the algae so you can see the white aragonite skeleton through the now translucent tissue. While not a death sentence it does make the coral extremely vulnerable to diseases and they can eventually starve without their symbiont photosynthesizing.
A dead coral has lost all of the tissue that covers the aragonite, and over time algae grow on the leftover skeleton until it resembles the rest of the reef rock. Diseases that cause tissue loss often affect parts of the coral so there can be patches of missing tissue until it spreads through the colony and finally kills it. Stress from pollution and changes in environment hurt coral immune systems to disease outbreaks are becoming more severe and lasting longer (the tissue loss disease hitting the East Atlantic reefs has been going and spreading since starting in Florida in 2014.) A big hurdle is coral disease is insanely complicated due to well...these brainless sessile rock animals also being stupidly complicated when it comes to their microbiome.
Most coral diseases are described as a bunch of symptoms, with a primary pathogen difficult to impossible to isolate with current knowledge. The good news is the world of coral conservation is expanding rapidly with way more minds on it from different fids. There's a lot of collaboration taking off between field work, pathologists, ocean nurseries, and closed system aquarists sharing information. Lots of places are doing lots of different things with the understanding that the more angles of attack and more things being tried, the better. Some cool stuff happening include:
-Ark projects taking corals from healthy areas of reefs to house in aquariums to preserve a gene bank that can be used for future repopulation. This is done for other animals in zoos and aquariums but doing it for coral is new.
-Asexual reproduction nurseries breaking off pieces of coral to grow either in an aquarium nursery or in nurseries on reefs to then be replanted. While it doesn't preserve genetic diversity as much this keeps coral cover in vulnerable areas to keep the reef going. Many of these places will also remove corals from regions that are under threat from development to move them to a healthier region or build new reefs to protect shorelines.
-"Jump-start" programs for genetic diversity. A big problem with sexual reproduction is as reefs die corals may be too far apart for spawnings to be successful. Field researchers teamed up with aquarists almost a decade ago for the first time to go out and collect eggs and sperm from yearly spawns of selected sites. These are taken to a nearby place to fertilize the eggs, raise larva until they settle onto specialized substrate which can then be "seeded" onto a reef. This exponentially ups the survival rate of coral larvae through that first step that typically only one in a million would survive. Currently the project is working on making the process as cheap and streamline as possible and working more with island populations so people won't need an expensive facility or man hours to do this.
-Induced captive spawning. One of the newer tactics and VERY COOL. Captive corals are kept in specialized systems to recreate a year on the reef. To spawn the corals need to have a year of seasonal changes in daylight PLUS the light from the monthly lunar cycle. Facilities in warm enough areas can keep corals in greenhouses allowing natural light to do this, but new tech (mostly from the home hobby side of aquarium keeping, just to add more complicated nuance) allows places to program specialized lights, pumps, heaters and chillers together to artificially recreate all these conditions.
Downside is it takes a ton of money and manpower. A TON. STUPID AMOUNTS. The plus side is a few places have successfully gotten spawnings multiple years in a row that happen at the same time as the wild spawnings happen, and baby corals born and raised completely in captivity outplanted on reefs show promising results! This also allows much more fine tuning and control for targeted breeding of especially healthy and resilient coral.
A lot of coral conservation is in this state I've heard described as "throwing tracks down in front of the runaway train because we don't know how the train works yet." But the promising news is that there are a LOT of minds throwing those tracks down and working on the train.

Okay who wants some Erinaen traditional pigment/art/salt collection/cosmetic information?
Before anything else: non-traditional and synthetic pigments have gotten more common within the Erinaen Empire since First Contact, either being imported or becoming more readily produced thanks to the introduction of species like Osmosians to their communities and the improved tool options that came with First Contact (they have metal tools and shit now). We won't be discussing those here, just assume they're utilized in a similar manner to everything below when possible.
~~
Erinaens have two traditional uses for pigments- 'painting' and 'staining'. And yes they're in quotes for a reason. 'Painting' is most easily defined as 'applying a pigment to a non-living surface', and 'staining' is most easily defined as 'applying a pigment to a living surface and/or applying a staining pigment to a surface'.
"But Achi don't a lot of paints stain?" Yeeeep. Really staining is more like a middle ground between dying and makeup. It comes from the 'staining' of fibers and fur with pigment and just sort of ended up encapsulating various shit from there. There's a lot of variety in what's used in staining as a result- from the dye derived from vinegar fruit- made by steeping the rind in water to get red, orange, and yellow tones, and commonly used to dye woven fabric and stain both wood and writing materials- to pure ground pigments- made by drying and grinding any number of natural materials- and everywhere in between.
When dying things such as woven and writing materials, using just straight pigment is uncommon unless it's being used for a specific artistic purpose. Normally either thin, steeped dyes will be used or thick pasty dyes, depending on the area, materials involved, and desired colors and patterns.
Staining used to be common in writing, where symbols would be basically embossed or carved into wood or dried leaf material. A stain would then be applied and the excess wiped off, leaving most of it pooled in the symbols so that they stood out. A few locations in the same general area had begun moving away from this, instead letting the whole of the material be stained and filling in the symbols with paint, and that and similar techniques became more popular after First Contact, when techniques for producing paper were introduced to Eri (we'll get to this later).
~~
I've mentioned before that Erinaens, instead of things like tattoos, tend more to dying and doing up their fur? Yeah, that falls under staining. Actually the widest variety of staining techniques are used for cosmetic purposes, depending on the area, the pigment, and the effect desired. Somebody looking for a softer effect that doesn't last as long may use straight ground pigment, while somebody looking for bold colors and sharp delineations that last a good while will use a paste pigment. The latter is generally made by combining a dry, ground pigment with either a low amount of liquid or a oil/fat that's easily absorbed by the fur and skin. If using a liquid, it's not uncommon to use liquid in which the pigment or it's source has been steeped, to help keep and intensify the color.
Sometimes steeped dyes, such as from the vinegar fruit, are used to dye fur, but this is less common. You're more likely to see it from Erinaens with pale or white fur, and the dyed portions tend to be far larger and less precise than with other dyes. They tend to the be thin, so it's harder to go for precision or keep things in place long-term. This also means fur dyed this way tends to end up a lighter color than goods dyed with the same product.
When dying their fur, Erinaens tend to focus on color, shape, or both. It's common to use dying techniques to accentuate or give the illusion of various traits. Different patterns can accentuate round cheeks, make a muzzle appear longer, or give the impression that one has pudgy fingers, or the opposite if so desired. Color choice, meanwhile, tends to either be tied with color meaning in a specific area (red and blue in one area may send a completely different message than in another, and that may change depending on who applied the dye) or built entirely around what considered attractive color combinations or contrasts.
Since First Contact and the opening of trade with and immigration between the Osmosian Empire, mirrored surfaces have become more common and so individual now dye their own fur more often. Traditionally however this is a group or pair activity, and even to this day it's treated as a bonding activity in line with and often combined with communal grooming.
Out of the very wide range of colors available to traditionally, green is the only one not typically used in staining.
~~
Most of the Erinaen Empire doesn't really consider there to be a difference between paint and ink and they're handled the same way. Paints/inks are made using what we know as a 'tempera', combining pigment, egg yolk, and either a steeped dye or wine depending on the color, sometimes various gums depending on the use and creator. Typically, the colors will match (so, a paint made from a ground flower will more commonly be made with water that's had that flower steeped in it), but sometime different colored liquids will be used to change the tone of the paint. How it's applied is much more varied that how it's made. Brushes are commonly used, made from furs, feathers, wood, bone, especially when using the material in an artistic capacity rather than a 'writing shit down' capacity.
Traditionally writing specifically was mostly done on inner bark harvested from branches removed for other purposes, thin sheets of wood, and the hardier portions of large leaves. A stylus of wood, bone, or crystal would be used to carve the writing, as mentioned above. Brushes were only used in a select few regions. With the introduction and adoption of paper- taken advantage of as a way to utilize plant material that previously would have gone to waste, like that used in bedding, or fabrics that were falling apart, leavings from producing other goods, and even then it's never been considered the 'primarily' writing material of Erinaens outside of the diaspora- the use of the brush for writing became more common across the planet. After all, embossing paper is a little more risky than wood and such, so utilizing brushes when working with it was just sensible.
This played a part in the more widespread adoption of the sort of 'double writing' technique I mentioned before. With the use of the brush for writing on paper, you could stain the paper and then write over it in a different color. Especially when new inks became available. This became and has really remained population- probably in part due to reasons I'll get into- and so the unrelated technique of staining writing material after you write on it and then filling in the characters with paint also grew in popularity across Eri and eventually the Empire.
~~
The most common colors for writing, traditionally, are actually tied to salt collection methods.
The two primary, traditional methods by which Erinaens gather salt depend on location. If your colony is by the sea than panels of leather and woven fabrics will be hung down within range of the ocean spray. Salt will accumulate on the panels over time and you collect the salt from there. If your colony is near to specific cliff faces, on the other hand, you undergo the more dangerous process of gathering your salt from there.
Cliff salt is more dangerous to gather, as you often have to leave the trees to access it, and more labor intensive to produce. You have to mix the dirt and clay with water, sometimes several times, with separate out the salt. Then you have to take the resulting salt water and leave it out to evaporate off, leaving you with salt.
A side effect of both of these is that you can tell exactly where in the Erinaen Empire salt was procured by the taste and color. Sometimes down to the square mile of coast or cliff face.
Another side effect is that after production of cliff salt, you often find yourself with ochres, umbers, and siennas left behind. Not to mention water steeped in them. In this way cliff salt production provides not only salt but dyes and pigments. Enough so that ochres, the most common obtained, are the go-to for writing purposes. Meaning that the majority of Erinaen writing, even when not using traditional means, is done with yellows and reds. This is likely another reason having separate stains became popular, and you could stain your materials in colors that would contrast more against the ochre tones.
This multi-color thing they have going with their writing has also carried into their art in a very fun way. In any art piece done by Erinaens that depicts Osmosian writing, the differences in height in the Osmosian characters will be denoted by color. Deep areas will be in yellow, raised areas in red, and mid-areas in brown. As a result Erinaen art is among the rare few where you can read the Osmosian in it, despite being in 2D.
This doesn't necessarily mean the Osmosian makes sense, but you can read it.
~~
Before painting, those using the traditional materials first prepare their surface by coating it with fresh plant resin, sealing the material, and then putting down a layer of glue- sometimes made with egg whites, which cuts waste, but more popularly retrieved from a family of trees that decided the best way to protect their yearly growth was by gluing herbivores' mouths shut- mixed with chopped and ground feathers. This adds some extra sealing while also adding something to absorb any excess oils from the paint.
The results of this are that the color underneath the sealing, whether natural or stained, shines through to be painted over, ensuring a unique color pallet to each piece, and a lack of repeated coating alongside the feathers leaves traditional art pieces with a very specific texture as the grain of the base shines through and the feathers add their own little mess.
It's generally preferred, when laying down these base layers, to try to stick with the grain of the base. Everything until the painting proper should follow the same line of motion, and even the background of the painting should do the same. Working with an emphasizing the unique qualities of the base is normally considered a big deal in the 'doing traditional art now' scene. Paintings will even be aligned on the base to either flow with or cut across the grain depending on the intent of the artist. Stippling is also a very common technique used pretty much everywhere for detailing and shading, and has carried over into non-traditional art and mediums.
Currently, traditional Erinaen art is known for the luminous tones egg tempera allows, the prominence of the color of the base as an undertone, the heavy focus on accentuating underlying structure, often carrying over into the subjects of the work itself- a tree will have very clear and purposeful branches and twigs, a vertebrate's skeletal structure will be clear, etc- and use of color contrast to imply depth. The latter two, and the stippling, have also carried over into non-traditional painting.
That last one, the color contrast, evolved from the earlier mentioned tendency to translate Osmosian writing into a play of color. It's not uncommon to see yellow and red tones being used as accents to emphasize height, depth, and distance. This has even bled into art of things entirely unrelated to their relationship with Osmosians. The most famous piece of Erinaen artwork in the traditional medium outside of the Empire right now is an imagined view from within the ocean, with the depths accentuated with dark yellow shaded ridges poking out of the abyss and the light of the surface graced in pale red at the topmost edge of the image.
~~
As is to be expected from planet that's a solid 67% forest, Eri has a wide range of natural, organic pigments that have been traditionally used for ages. This also means they have a wide range of available colors to work with. We've already mentioned the red, yellow, and brown tones that make up their use of inorganic pigments, but on top of that they also have, without any mixing-
Organic reds, yellows, and oranges- from a wide range of sources, from animals to plants, but most famously steeping vinegar fruit rind, which doesn't grind well when dried unfortunately
Browns- from a wide range of sources, most commonly from ground bark and nuts
Black- only has one reasonably accessible source, a singular species of fruit that's not all that common and tastes like shit, but damnit if you won't get a good black from it
Blues- mostly from various flowers, but one popular source is the roots of a parasitic plant, which produces something I can only describe as 'powdery' and is the most common pigment used when painting the moon. Another is made from the carapace of a large arthropod and is actually bioluminescent, as a result it's popular for those doing plays and the like, used as make-up to denote villainous and/or dangerous characters
Greens- not as widely available as the others, and generally not in as bold or saturated of tones- though 'not as bold and saturated' by Eri standards still blows Earth standards out of the water- the most vivid is made from the cores of a family of crawling vines, which makes an even more striking dye if you boil it and then add some vinegar, but that's not generally done for obvious reasons
Purples- wide range of sources, some animals, some plants, but the most popular is a family of mosses that produce a range of shades from 'thistle' to 'purpura', one of which, when soaked in vinegar before drying, produces what I can only describe as exactly what Rich Jorgensen was looking for what he injected 'get more purple' genes into those petunias
Whites- you do sometimes see clay or chalk being used for white pigment, but mostly it's in painting, for staining if you see it more often than not it's being used as a base on which that bioluminescent blue is being put, to really emphasize it

HAIR.   Rich black, kept long in braids- along with a short goatee- ever since he moved to America. Pre-Fog, he kept as good care of his braids as he could, taking them out at least once a week to wash his hair and redo them. Nowadays, the most he does with them is pick any stray twigs or leaves out, making sure the chain links he's woven in are still in place.
SKIN.   Before the Fog, his skin was naturally deep brown but offset by the lighter scar tissue washed across his form. Now, it's as if the melanism in his skin has taken over every other pigment, the bark-like hide now covering him black as midnight.
FACE.   Jaw is angular with a blunt chin, defined cheekbones and a broad nose. Lips are full and seem permanently pulled down at the edges.
HEIGHT.   7'8" (or 6'4" before the Entity's transformation)
COMPANIONS. Very little, both in the past and present. Angelino Azimov, his boss at Autohaven, and his ex Royce Delaney were the closest he'd been to another human being since his entire family was taken. He finds the vast majority of company in the Fog obnoxious at most amicable- with the exception of Rin, Carmina, Ms. Smitherson, the littles Legionnaire, and (in small doses) Max.
ANTAGONISTS.   There are far too many to name. One already mentioned above. It's much simpler to leave it at that.
COLORS.   Blues, browns, greys, white, and black
FRUITS.   Citrus, especially lemon. It's his favorite flavor for sweets, too.
DRINKS.   Water is the only option anymore. But he occasionally misses Ale 8, a soda he'd bought on a whim at a (unaffiliated) gas station and continued to buy a bottle of when his monthly paycheck rolled in (read: was handed to him in small bills) as a sort of tradition.
ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ?  He's never been particularly interested in alcohol, despising the taste. The only alcoholic drink he ever liked was a pink lemonade wine cooler.
SMOKES ?  As morbidly ironic as it is considering his childhood, he developed a smoking habit shortly before coming to America. Needless to say he doesn't get much of a chance to continue with this in the Fog.
DRUGS ?   Never. He saw what it did to some of the soldiers razing his home country, what happened when some of his people got ahold of it, lived only a few blocks from a regular spot for junkies- not to mention the assumptions that followed him as a black man in the 70s and 80s. Anything that could've tempted him on the streets didn't have much of a chance to charm him.
DRIVERS LICENSE ?   He never had a driver's license. (But that didn't stop Azimov from having him move the cars in and out of the garage and around the lot. Or messing around in the driver's seat of one of the staff lorries.)

righto - im back add even MORE stuff
in reference to your final paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to the small paragraph under the first photo, adapting to..."), I strongly think that vessels are kinda like plants – you’ve got to grow them to full maturity for them to become able to become self-sufficient and thrive. This, again, links back to the similar logical method of grafting apple trees- chopping and changing parts to create an ideal kind.
2. Responding to your first paragraph (sentence beginning "Okay so in response to #2..."), I believe that precursors do also have the choice of remaining in two separate vessels, be this usually for practical reasons, for example, having very different functions that require them to be in different places at the same time. This likely is not as common as simply inhabiting the same vessel but is an option for them nevertheless. As for inhabiting the same vessel, I do believe that it is likely for precursors to have internal fallings out within their singular vessel, which of course would present numerous problems. Hence, they have the option to move their consciousness to a separate vessel. However, this may not always be possible, which could cause further tensions within the relationship.
3. To reference to your fourth paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to #3, the colors, shapes...") I have included a diagram of how I think it would work, as blood cannot transport nerves. This should hopefully illustrate what I am attempting to get across a little more cohesively to you.
Tumblr media
Annotations read:
nerves would likely be found in the stratum lucidum, epidermis, chromatophore, and iridophore layers.
Layer 1: thin filmy layer, which acts as a cell membrane and allows for osmosis (for fluids) and diffusion (for gases). It could also function similarly to the stratum lucidum.
Layer 2: translucent gel. Similar to the epidermis, designed to act as a barrier for delicate internals.
Layer 3: chromatophores producing pigment of varying levels of yellow, red, brown, and most likely also blue. This varies the colour of the 'glowing channels' and is what creates those colours.
Layer 4: Iridophores reflect light using chemochrones composed of gelatine. This is what gives the precursors their 'shiny' appearance
Layer 5: stratum spongiosum, stratum compactum, etc...
Layer 6: a thin sheet of fibrous muscle. It acts somewhat as a giant web of ligaments, enabling them to move (see figure 3 of the second page of diagrams)
Below all that, 'blood' essentially fills the rest of the gaps inside the structure of the vessel. It transports nutrients, electrolytes, gases, hormones, etc...
Tumblr media
Figure 2: a dip between the two slides of keratin that protects the delicate flesh underneath. This makes it more difficult to access the soft, delicate flesh underneath.
Figure 3: The plates of keratin can overlap to allow for movement. The stratum lucidum can bend easily and the underlying flesh is flexible.
Figure 4: I am sure that varying levels of each kind of pigment will vary between each precursor, much like human skin and the production of melanin, essentially varying based on the evolutionary traits that is best suited for the clime and role they hold.
Figure 5: Here shows a sample precursor leg. We could take a small sample of material, which in TURN includes data from the precursor it was sourced from, which makes a fair bit more natural and logical sense. Think of it like grafting an apple tree. If precursors are so intelligent, then this method would make more logical sense, as this contains more information and value than just a data download, it is much less technology-intensive than an entire data download, plus it is just very sweet and sentimental, plus it doesn't cost much, all that's needed is a bit of time and a small piece of flesh. However, this comes at the cost of it taking a lot longer, which is pretty inconvenient. But, at the cost of a more developed precursor, it is a cost worth taking, /nm
This would require a nervous system, which is possibly featured in the game (mind you I haven’t played Below Zero, I am waiting for the perfect opportunity) due to the inclusion of a precursor vessel skeleton, which confirms the precursors are vertebrates, meaning that they have a spinal column, and therefore a peripheral nervous system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The organs, as biologically nonsensical as they are, do provide somewhat of an impression of how things might work in their bodies. Also, we can see that the structure of the antlers and crests are in fact bone, rather than cartilaginous structures, which is somewhat similar to Cervidae, but more closely to that of bovine, as the horns are connected to the skull.
Tumblr media
The organs.
Tumblr media
Hoo boy. They appear to have lungs, which could lend to the idea that the channels in their body are designed for the intake of oxygen, as there are no obvious orifices for a trachea, and there isn’t even one featured in the organs themselves. The organs are directly connected to these fan-like structures, similar to that of rami found on axolotl.
Tumblr media
This leads to the idea that these could possibly stretch and flow over the back of the body, reaching down the back, as there clearly is no space to house such things on the shoulders. Plus, they look pretty floppy. Plus, the ‘lungs’ themselves are spotted with small suction cup-looking things, which seem to line up pretty nicely with the holes in the ribcage.
Tumblr media
This may tell us that oxygen is taken in from these, which connect to the keratin shell, and hence absorb outside gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide) through diffusion through the small channels in-between the keratin plates. Then, these fibrous structures may provide some form of nutrient transportation or may help support the structure of the body. Then, below that, are two small glands of equal size. Architects do not appear to consume or drink anything, so what these glands are is equally up for interpretation.
Tumblr media
I believe that they could be used for temperature regulation, by creating exothermic reactions with chemicals such as methane or sulphur to keep warm and ammonia to keep cool. They need to adapt to a variety of climes, so this may be an adaption to assist that. They could also be there to control or house chemical reactions in the body, though this likely is something that would go on within the bloodstream. The rest of it? I’m not exactly sure. Maybe something to do with nerves?
And, in reference to the second part of the same paragraph (sentence beginning "Yes, we can feel temperatures...") I would also link precursors to crustaceans and molluscs- there is a much more similar pattern to the tail and bodily structure, as well as the soft, squishy innards with a solid exoskeleton, usually keratin or chitin. However, precursors have an inner skeleton, too, which lends them more to creatures like crocodiles and tortoises, which have both. The precursor shares semblance with all of these earthly creatures, which all share one common trait- persevering in the evolutional battle for millennia. The crocodile is well known to be a descendant of archosaurs in the late Cretaceous period and is still an apex predator. Molluscs - descendants of the nautilus, tortoises – also related to archosaurs, crustaceans – decapods from over 300 million years ago. The precursors are known to have visited and left impacts on Earth, which could mean that they either gave traits of their kind to the creatures of Earth, or, after observing the creatures and their incredible adaptions, adapted their vessels to have similar traits so they are more likely to survive in harsh or challenging conditions.
4. To refer to your third paragraph (sentence beginning "In response to #4 my species didn’t feel familial ties..."), I'd like to throw in a possibility for when fabricating a vessel, there is a slim likelihood that a vessel may be defective or not 'up to standards'. I'll refer to my uninteresting OC Ov'An as an example here: Ov'An is a runt of the litter, metaphorically speaking. Its body is much weaker and more scrawny than its peers, who have much more bulky, stronger bodies built for rough conditions, as most precursors were designed for. I'd also like to note the possibility of class within the precursors. Precursor society has been described as somewhat socialist, but I reckon that at some point they would decide to elect some form of guiding force for them to provide stability and a sense of direction, as well as choosing the most intelligent mind to help guide all. This could possibly lead to a court system, where several collective members of the most intelligent consciousnesses would band together in a sort of council to aid each other and bounce ideas off another perspective to ensure the most success and longevity possible for the greater society.
Holy moly realizing these ideas and possibilities really makes one's mind run riot lol ESPECIALLY figuring out all the minute intricacies of how the precursors might tick!

. ✧ . * . ⌜ sohan pague, twenty-three, trans-male, he/they / who are you, really? by mikky ekko + always standing three strides back and one to the side, learning to speak through pigments on canvas, & finding your own family despite guilt to retain the name ⌟ hey, have you met GREGORY GOYLE yet? the PUREBLOOD is a FIFTH YEAR at hogwarts and are a SLYTHERIN. makes sense given they tend to be a bit CRAFTY and INFLUENCED. it seems the death of the boy who lived has placed them on the DARK side of the looming war. let’s just hope they make it out alive.
tw: familial expectations/obligations, drinking/alcohol mention, potential alcohol abuse, death mention
full name: gregory godlet goyle
date of birth: october 22nd
star sign: libra
place of birth: cambridgeshire, england
family: martyn goyle (father), moreen TBD (mother)
sexual orientation: queer. explaining his sexuality beyond that feels like a chore, and also not anyone's business. having already put so much out himself out there, greg is exhausted by the idea of explaining himself beyond need.
religion: ashiest.
tattoos: none yet.
style: a pair of tried and true black trousers, several silver rings along a fist, button-ups worn as jackets, doc martens, earth-colored basic tees, hems hitting at the ankle, patterned socks put on full display, worn-in denim jackets, wool jumpers, and an aged grey tweed overcoat nicked from his grandfather's closet.
eyeing your distorted reflection in the puddle of a rainstorm, always standing three strides back and one to the side, becoming numb to the T's stamped across test papers, black ink staining the side of your dominant hand, always casting a look to the side, the heel of your hand pressed so hard against your eye you swear it'll leave a bruise, a black cat providing your only bit of luck, learning to speak through pigments on canvas, inheriting your grandfather's name and his taste for bourbon, screaming below the surface of the black lake in competition with thunder, tripping on untied laces, a specific kind of comfort being in the dark, & finding your own family despite guilt to retain the name.
gregory goyle was born into a wealthy— though far from the wealthiest— pureblood family. his name wasn't gregory goyle then but that name hardly matters anymore. he's been gregory ever since coming out as trans at the age of sixteen. it had been a journey to get to that point, a lot of time spent battling the potential reactions and rejections in his head. coming from a traditional family, safe to say his parents were one of the scariest audiences
greg doesn't even remember what he'd said, mostly just remembers how his legs were shaking and how he couldn't stop playing with his fingers. he counted himself lucky that his parents accepted it, though that in itself might be an overstatement. they doesn't fully get it in truth. it seems the part martyn latched onto was that he now had a son, and therefore a legacy. a new weight for gregory to bear; and just when he'd thought he might get to breathe a little easier.
in a way, that might be why they latched onto being one of draco's shadows. it felt like the right thing to do, an expected pureblood course for him to chart, without having to take the lead himself. he could simply follow the leader and save himself a bit of stress.
well more stress. there really was no escaping that, especially not with his academic abilities. he'd found that he was somewhat decent at charms and passable (mostly) at defense against the dark arts... oh, but the rest. it's a punch of P's, D's, & T's. some of his classes he's only made it through by the help of some classmates, and then some with some less above-board assistance.
greg found that he did better away from books. like first year! he did bloody well in flying. why couldn't they have more years with that?! and, honestly, he'd done alright with the hands on stuff with magical creatures... it just wasn't his thing. greg had his one dealing with the hippogriff and was all set. he'll keep to his cat, moxie, thanks.
unfortunate it's not a class, and unfortunate goyle tends not to share any of his work with people, but he's a good artist. it was an activity that started as a habit, picked up on the edges of his notes when the lecture gave him a headache— that's when he'd start scratching away with his quill. little sketches turned to full papers, turned to journals filled front to back. there's an art club at hogwarts, but it's something they don't attend regularly, and when he does he's either sneaking in late or slipping out early. [ooc: if you are familiar with this guy/this gag, he's similar].
has always loved the rain, specifically thunderstorms since they were a little kid. if he overthought it, maybe it's because greg liked how it could get loud and shake out his thoughts, or that it felt good to know the universe wanted to scream too. but the light, easy, usual answer was that it felt fucking good just to go out in the middle of it. to run through puddles. to kick and stomp. you could be a kid in the rain. so any storm that comes, be prepared to see gregory out there.
just joined the quidditch team this year as a beater. he's not the most accurate and can be outsmarted, but when he connects, it does hurt.
goyle used to have a bit more heft to him. he'd started shedding the weight the day potter turned up dead. unlike the majority of his classmates, he'd gotten clued in sometime during the summer about the why, not the how. coming from a death eater family, the concept of voldemort being back was supposed to be a good thing. maybe eventually he'd feel that but first and foremost, what gregory goyle felt was stress. merlin, this was going to be another arduous journey for him to go on, wasn't it? as the weight of this new reality settled upon him this past summer, goyle lost nearly three stone. the clothes that used to cling tight now hang loose, shrinking a once formidable figure. funny what a harsh sense of mortality will do.
aside from swinging a beater's bat and dirtying his hands and parchment with ink, goyle has taken to unwinding with a drink. his grandfather started sharing his love for bourbon with gregory a good few years back, but this summer he'd broken out some of the very best. they had things to celebrate, of course. gregory learned quickly that he's knocked it back too fast, that he was meant to savor it. so he learned the proper way. still didn't mean that itch wasn't inside him every time, wanting to just knock it back and quick grab another. the stress definitely goes away easier that way.
... still figuring out more. any gaps/questions, feel free to ask!!
general connection ideas: friends outside of his core trio, ex-friends, pseudo siblings, childhood/family friends, classmates, teammates, ex-teammates, exes, fwb, one night stand, one-sided crush, old crush, enemy, annoyance, drinking buddy, someone he runs into at the kitchens, an art buddy, bad influence, good influence, extended fam, tutors… others that i cannot think of

Labmas AU - Unintended Consequences
Chapter 6 Part 2 - Agreement
It was evening when you heard a light knocking on your door. It must be Nobori. You had become worried he wouldn't show, or that Alvis hadn't bothered to tell him to come. Jumping up, you turn off your phone and place it on the table. Rushing to the door and opening it, you're greeted with Nobori's back.
He begins talking while facing the wall, "Hello, (Y/N). I apologize for coming so late. It was a shock when Mr. Alvis came to inform me you had requested my presence. He sounded terrified to be speaking to me. I must admit, I've never been invited inside anyone's personal quarters before, barring Kudari's of course."
"Really? Well, don't be nervous, I just wanted to thank you." Stepping aside to make room for him to enter, he doesn't move. "Um, you can turn around and come in now." You say this lightly, so it won't come across as a demand.
"Yes, well… do you remember when I told you how I was able to hide my hybrid features? I'm not hiding them at this time, and I don't want to startle you." He spoke quietly when saying this.
You hadn't anticipated getting to see such an intimate side of him tonight, but console him, "It's no problem at all. Would you like me to close my eyes until you're ready?"
"…Yes, I think I would appreciate that," Came his soft voice.
"Okay, I'll close my eyes now." A moment after closing them, you feel him pass by, so you shut the door. Turning, you slowly walk to the couch, arms outstretched so you won't hit anything. Nobori grabs your wrist and helps guide you. After you sit down you say, "Let me know when you're ready for me to open them." The couch shifts, indicating he has sat next to you.
"A-all right. You may open your eyes," He murmurs. Slowly opening them, your attention is drawn to the soft, yellow glow of his eyes and the impossibly black pigmentation encircling them. If you had opened the door to him facing you, they would have been the first thing you saw in the dim hallway. He wore a nervous expression, eyes wide and mouth slightly open. His skin was a light lavender color. You could definitely see the Chandelure in him. He wasn't wearing his trench coat, substituting it for a turtleneck. Or perhaps he always wore that under his coat. Also absent were his gloves. You reached your hand out towards his, but stopped to ask permission, "May I touch your hand?"
"You may." He whispered it so softly, you wondered if you imagined it.
Continuing on your mission, you grab his hand and lift it closer so you can get a better look. It has the same lavender color as his face, but other than that, it feels like a normal hand. No change in temperature or texture. Lowering his hand, your fingers reach up and brush the rim of his hat, looking to him for approval. After a nod, you remove it. His hair was receding and the same silver color as his sideburns and goatee. Placing the cap back on his head, you felt your curiosity was satiated. You decided to ask the question that had popped in your head when first seeing his true visage. "How is it you make yourself look…"
"Like a normal person?" He finishes the question for you, looking down as he explains, "Lots of makeup. It's quite tricky to apply enough to cover the black rings. Definitely a learning curve. Scleral contact lenses cover most of the glow my eyes give off. I never wear short sleeves, so my arms are always out of view. As are my hands when I wear gloves."
Thinking of all the effort he must put in for something that was so easy for others, you realize he must not expose many people to how he looks. Feeling strangely honored for getting to see it, you recognize his courage in revealing himself to you. "Thank you for showing me the real you. I know you didn't have to. Sorry if it made you uncomfortable."
He looks back to you, speaking assuredly, "Not at all. I was more worried I would upset you with my appearance."
"Well, you shouldn't worry so much. I think you're quite handsome." You tell him with a smile, hoping he will see your sincerity. His face becomes a darker shade of purple, so you decide to save him from further embarrassment by changing the subject. "I'm glad you came. When I was at the lockers today, Colress didn't mention that I locked my badge in there yesterday. I know for a fact he wouldn't have let me live it down had he known. So, thank you for not telling him."
"It was nothing. You were very stressed and it was not pertinent information to the subject we were discussing." He starts playing with his goatee. It must be a habit of his, you note.
With how often he and Colress talk, it seems Nobori is in a high position within Team Plasma, at least in the laboratory. Being given access to the whole lab, and even Kudari. "If you don't mind my asking, what exactly do you do for Colress?" You couldn't help your curiosity.
"I don't do much, really. Dr. Colress only calls on me when there is need. My work is done outside of Plasma headquarters. I assure there aren't any negative optics arising for Team Plasma and prevent inconveniences from happening. It would probably be more factual to say that my real job is caring for Kudari." Pausing as if he just remembered something, he continues, "On the topic of Dr. Colress, I should be returning to my room. Though I have only been here a short while, If he discovers I left, he will be quite displeased with me."
"Wait, does he seriously make you stay in your room when you're not working?" You were horrified at the implication.
"It's not that I'm not normally allowed to leave my room, I would just rather not make the others who work here uneasy. However, I'm afraid Dr. Colress is upset that I let Kudari out the other day, and has told me not to leave my room as a form of punishment. He feels Kudari is a danger and doesn't like him to be let out unless someone is watching him, which rarely happens now." There was a hint of sadness in his voice. Nobori stands from the couch and looks down to you. "Thank you for inviting me over. It was an exhilarating experience in the daily monotony of my life."
Standing up as well, you remember the other topic you wanted to discuss with him. "It was no problem, really. But, before you go, I have a request as well." Nobori straightens his back. "Colress told me you can more or less 'hypnotize' people. And, though I appreciate that you were trying to calm me down, can you… not do that again? What I feel may not always be pleasant, but they're my feelings to endure." You hope you explained it to him adequately, without sounding as if he did something wrong.
He gives you a shocked expression, before apologizing, "Forgive me, I thought I was helping you. I did not realize it would disturb you so." Nobori looks distraught. "I will be sure not to do so again from here on out, unless you ask." He bows his head in repentance.
"Hey, don't feel too bad about it. You couldn't have known it would bother me." You place a finger under his chin to softly lift his head back up. "Honestly, last night was the best sleep I ever had!" You give him a big grin. His face becomes deep purple again as you continue, "Alright, I'll let you go. Take care of yourself. Don't take this the wrong way, I know you respect him, but Colress can come across as extremely passive aggressive. Try not to let him put you down."
His mood immediately lifts. "I know exactly what you mean. He's definitely an… acquired taste." Smiling once more, he tips his hat, "Have sweet dreams, (Y/N). I'm sure I'll see you around." He turns and lets himself out, giving you one last glance before he's gone.
Alone again, you were smiling like a fool. Was something happening? You were much too busy attempting to navigate Colress and your work situation for anything to be happening. It's probably just nerves. You hope it's just nerves. Still, you consider Nobori to be extremely handsome. Which didn't mean anything. So was Colress, but he was an ass. Whereas Nobori was gentle and sweet. It would be best for you to get some sleep and stop thinking for the night. Only bad things can come from thinking so much. You decided to just concentrate on your breathing and what tomorrow would be like. Definitely not looking forward to potentially running into Nobori.

THE 7 QUICK TIPS FOR NAIL PAINT THAT WILL SAVE YOU SO MUCH MONEY AT THE SALON
After a long week, getting a manicure or pedicure at the salon is undoubtedly calming. However, given the high cost involved, it can be alluring to consider forgoing the procedure altogether and leaving your nails untreated. An American manicure often costs $20 to $25, and that just includes basic services. Be prepared to pay more if you want to get your nails painted with acrylic, gel, or dipping powder. Your manicure won't last forever, of course, so plan on getting one at least every three weeks.
On the other hand, making a $50 down payment to purchase all the necessary supplies for a DIY manicure is also a possibility. It might be a one-time, large payment, but in the long run, you might make some money. Here are some simple nail painting tips you can use if you're willing to give up your salon-quality manicure and are seeking for ways to save money.
Apply base coat to your nail tips as the first hack.
No matter how careful you are, nail polish tends to chip after a few days. However, you may delay this from happening by painting a base coat on the top half of the nail and a second layer on the entire nail before applying the nail polish.
Utilize white nail polish as a base coat (trick #2)
A color shift in your nail polish over time? The method for doing that is to paint the nails white first, then color them. If your nail polish is not very opaque, it will enhance the paint's real color.
HACK #3: USE YOUR CREATIVITY TO CREATE NAIL ART
Some people lack the talent to create great nail art, which is another reason why we wish to visit a nail salon. However, nail art doesn't really have to be that difficult. If you have some spare time at work, you can design your own nails using the supplies you already have.
Tumblr media
HACK #4: USE SCOTT TAPE TO MAKE FRENCH TIPS EASIER
The French manicure is the most straightforward yet challenging nail art, particularly the tip because one incorrect brush stroke can ruin a flawless, white nail tip. Put some scotch tape where you want the tip to start and take it off after the nail paint has dried.
Hack #5: Create a new polish shade using your eyeshadow.
Have a lot of used eyeshadow? Don't discard it. You can utilize that to produce a brand-new polish color. Simply use a brush to blend your old eyeshadow with clear polish. By adding more pigment, you can alter the strength of the color, and we can guarantee that you will like doing this.
Hack #6: You may use your eyeliner as a nail tool.
There is no nail tool? No issue. By picking up the little pieces with an eyeliner, you can adhere some rhinestones on your nail. The eyeliner will hold the rhinestone in place, ensuring its stability. It's ideal if you have an eyeliner color that you don't particularly like because you can now use it instead of tossing it away.
Hack #7: Use a cup of water to create a marble effect
This one is for you if you want a nice nail art without having to put in a lot of work. It only needs one brush, but the results are always fantastic. Start by applying tape to cover the skin-covered portion of your nail.
CONCLUSION
As you can see, having beautiful nail art need not be expensive. You can make your own nail art without spending a lot of money if you have the correct materials, attitude, and patience. Sometimes everything you require is right in front of you. Who knows, maybe doing this will help you develop your talent and one day own your own nail shop. You only need to invest a little time in perfecting this at first, and then you'll get the hang of it and discover how soothing this hobby is.

Manifesto of Perception
Look beyond what's in front of you. Look behind and the side, from the top and from the bottom. The eyes aren't the only thing that can decipher or appreciate a work of art. Even people are not what they seem, you can look at someone and never know what actually makes them them. In the process of this course, my collection of blog posts underlines an important purpose to me personally and to everyone as well, to look past what is visible and to see paintings, movies, or songs not just with our eyes but with all our senses. When analyzing a certain piece of video art, just particularly seeing a still shot of the man jumping in the water your mind doesn't go to the crucifixion or the artist's opinions about heaven and hell. My analysis of the scene in the movie, Moonlight, where the two protagonists after being separated for years, and having lived different lives finally meet again.  A lot of what the scene is saying is said in the silence and pauses between the characters. Without watching the rest of the movie or even just the scene previous to this one you can't know what the story is. The same point stands for real humans, consider people watching, it is impossible to know what actually lies in a person's heart and mind based solely on the look or aesthetics of a person. The quote “Never judge a book by its cover”, is a phrase heard very often and when put to practice and use it is possible to be pleasantly surprised. It is possible to find and like something new that you wouldn't have previously enjoyed if we focused on the binding of the book rather than what’s written on the pages. When looking at artwork it can be difficult to actually see anything past the canvas, in a way where we can truly encapsulate and begin to understand the piece. In this case, it is important to note the emotions that the art piece conveys. In the abstract analysis piece I did, the painting is very literal with not much to go off of except the pretty and soft colors. The whimsical aspects are what drew me to the painting in the first place, the fact that a painting can make a viewer feel happy or calm means the artist has managed to capture and mix emotion to create a pigment that brings color to the canvas and to what could have been an otherwise colorless life. Another way of seeing things beyond what is verbatim is by putting yourself in another's shoes. For example, the song, “ Two Ghosts”, by Harry Styles is the representational piece of artwork I chose. This breakup song perfectly captures a relationship that ends not in malice but amicably with an underlying sadness. When this song was released in 2017, I could easily recognize its contents as sad and melancholy, but when my own relationship ended I could not only feel the sentiment and emotion in a different and more real way but I could relate back to my own heartbreak and angst. Rather than just saying I understand I can actually truly interpret and see my own failed pairing in the lyrics. It's the easiest part of this process, to just say it to express that you feel that way but living and putting it to use is difficult. What helps me is taking it one day at a time and remembering that everyone is trying their best. It is also an important thought to note that with a perception of a person or a piece of artwork, comes acceptance of others having a past. That a person's emotional baggage is deeply rooted in their history, and acceptance is an important part of seeing beyond. Isn't that what everyone wants? To be accepted and loved in your world. Acceptance is not the same as agreeance, but accepting that a painting or a person is not what they seem and being able to appreciate what is being shown and presented to us.

In the older days, Desi Ghee was a part of everyday life. It was poured generously atop rice, brushed over chapatis, and lavishly poured over curries and dals. Years later, nothing has changed - only the fact that the steel jar of freshly made ghee has been swapped with a glass bottle bought from the superstore.
Tumblr media
What is Desi Ghee?
Desi Ghee, or clarified butter, is churned from cow's milk. It gives a unique flavor and aroma to any food, it is added to.  Enjoy it with the traditional khichdi or pair it with Rajasthani dal baati. Traditional desserts like halwa and sweets would never taste as good without a spoonful of Desi Ghee. Sweet and nutty, yet not overpowering like some other oils. As a matter of fact, desi ghee has been used in India for thousands of years, back when there were no other options for cooking fats. This golden liquid is regarded as the 'first and the most essential of all foods in the Vedas. It has a high heat point, so it doesn't burn easily (while other oils may break down and release free radicals when heated at high temperatures). This makes it quite sensible to use desi ghee in Indian cuisine as Indian food requires a lot of sautéing. So, by now it’s clear that a jar of desi ghee is a must in the kitchen.
But which one is the best? Which brand of desi ghee will give you more value? Let’s discuss how you can find out whether the ghee you are using at your home is pure or adulterated.
Some facts about pure desi ghee:
Pure cow ghee has a bright yellow color which is due to the presence of carotenoid pigments.
The color of ghee will always appear deeper when melted than in solid form.
On melting, ghee should be clear, transparent and free from sediment or foreign coloring matter.
A good ghee sample should have well-developed granules dispersed uniformly.
It is composed of 99.5% milk fat out of which 62% is saturated fat.
How to check the purity of ghee at home?
Heat Test:
Pure cow ghee has a creamy consistency and a yellow-golden hue. It is made out of milk fat, therefore melts rapidly when applied to heat. However, its purity has obviously been affected if it takes time to liquefy. To check this, all you need to do is heat a teaspoon of ghee in a vessel. If the ghee melts immediately and turns dark brownish in color, it is of pure quality. However, if it takes time to dissolve and changes its color to light yellow, it indicates adulterated and it’s best to avoid.
Palm Test:It is easy yet an effective test to check the purity of ghee. Authentic ghee solidifies when cooled but also melts easily when subjected to heat. Taking that into consideration, simply place a teaspoon of solidified ghee in your palm. If the ghee quickly melts by itself (due to the heat generated by your body), then it is pure.
Iodine test
Warm up a spoonful of desi ghee. Add two drops of iodine solution to a small quantity of melted ghee. Give it some time to rest. If the ghee turns out to be somewhat purple in color, you may rest assured that the ghee is not pure and mixed with starch.
Bottle Test for Sugar Research
Take a transparent or clear bottle and add a pinch of sugar to it. Close the bottle and give it a good shake. Now, let it stand for 5 to 10 minutes. If you find red color at the bottom of the bottle, then the ghee contains vegetable oil.
Freezing TestMelt a tablespoon of ghee and place it into a glass container. Place the container in the refrigerator and allow it to freeze. Now observe the frozen ghee. If there are a couple of layers formed in the container, you may be sure that the ghee comprises a combination of various oils.
Tumblr media
While these methods can be used to ensure that the desi ghee you use at home is pure or not, is it possible to check each and every brand of desi ghee at home? Of course not! Not only purity, but each brand also varies in terms of efficacy, nutritional value, price, taste, etc. And checking all these factors at home is next to impossible.
That’s why Choicemonk is here for your rescue. I found one lone gray hair starting to come in right in the big middle of my scalp. There’s not a single other one on my head that I can see (or that my hairdresser has ever found), so I don’t know if it’s a fluke or a preview of what’s to come later on in life.
I thought I’d be more freaked out about it than I am, but it’s a barely-there baby hair that’s just coming in, and rather than being a dull, tired gray it’s a starry/moonlight silver.
If anyone ever sees and comments on it, I’m going to correct them and say it’s “starlight.”

20dollarlolita vs that one dress that I never washed, part 4:
In the previous episode, we discussed how the dress got into this state, treated it with an oxidizing stain remover, threw it in the washing machine with professional textile detergent, and concluded that it was better, but not good.
So, as we previously mentioned, sometimes stains won't come out. So, what do we do? We have a couple of options here:
1) we could remove the stains by releasing pigment from the cotton fibers the dress is made of, by some means such as bleach. This would be damaging to the print and the fibers of the dress, and is likely to ruin it
2) we could dye the entire dress another color, to mask the yellow. Assuming we put some kind of textile resist placed on the white areas of the skirt (which are actually white right now), and then un-sew and re-sew the lace, we could get a dress that doesn't look like it was just thrown in a vat of pink dye. This could be very effective, or could ruin the dress. It's about a 50/50 if you ask me. For a dress this nice, I'd also have to get good dye and all the additives, instead of just throwing it into a vat or Rit and letting what comes out come out.
3) we could accept this dress as it is, with all its flaws, and just make a point to never wear it with accessories that are stark white, and hope that the lighting makes it so no one notices.
All of those options are less than ideal.
So, let's take option 4: Laundry Blue.
Tumblr media
Laundry blue is an ancient technique that makes yellowed, once-white clothing appear bright white. It's basically just Prussian Blue pigment, made so that it is soluble in water. You add it to your rinse cycle, and it adds blue pigment into your garment.
How does blue pigment make white clothes white? It's time for color theory.
Tumblr media
A lot of people know color theory, but let's grab the color wheel anyway. When you pick two wedges of color on the color wheel, and you mix them together, they make the color that is the colors in between those colors. If you mix red and violet, you get that pink tone. If you mix yell and orange, you get that yellow-orange tone. But what happens when you mix colors opposite each other (complementary colors)? When you mix red and green, they make a neutral color (usually black).
But when you add in a lot of white and mix very light tints of these colors together, instead of getting black, you get a light neutral shade. If your tints are light enough, and you mix two colors that are opposite the color wheel, you get a gray color that is so light that our eyes see it as white.
That was really, really simplified, so if you're interested in this, please find more information and read up on it. It's very cool.
But that color theory, using colors opposite the color wheel to neutralize each other, is pretty common. That's why people with bleached blonde hair use purple shampoo. Bleaching your hair makes it more yellow than natural blonde hair is, so using purple shampoo makes it appear less yellow. Purple is opposite yellow, so purple pigment on yellow hair makes yellow hair closer to a white/gray tone.
So that's how laundry blue works. When you put blue pigment into yellowed fabric, it becomes less yellow, and closer to that white/gray color that our eyes see as white.
Now, some people are definitely wondering why it's "laundry blue" and not "laundry purple", if we're trying to remove yellow, and the opposite of yellow is purple. I'm glad you asked.
The answer is money. Actually, the answer is history. Actually, the answer is textile science. Maybe the answer is all three.
Purple dye, historically, has been one of the hardest dyes to make, and has been very expensive. This is why it's a color very heavily associated with wealth and royalty, even to this day.
Prussian blue, however, was a much less expensive dye. It was the first artificially manufactured color, and it was accessible and relatively inexpensive, when compared to the natural pigment used to make purple.
Blue is pretty close to purple on the color wheel, so it will neutralize yellows, just not as well as purple could. But people have been using laundry bluing for centuries, and no one's put out an inexpensive laundry purple, so let's keep working with what works.
Also, using blue-toned white as the "whitest" white is a tradition that started basically at the invention of Prussian blue. If you've ever played laser tag with a white shirt on, and found that your shirt glowed blue under the blacklight, that's the blue tint the manufacturers put into your shirt to make it look white. This is also why your teeth don't glow under blacklight, even if they're very white, unless you got them professionally whitened and they added blue pigment to it.
So, history out of the way, let's talk about why I don't want to dye this dress, but am okay with soaking it in water with blue pigment in it. See, laundry blue is inert. Dye chemically reacts with the fibers to place pigment into the fiber of the dress itself, so that the color will stay in the fabric even when it's washed. Laundry blue does not bind to the fibers of the dress at all. It just kind of sits on top of the fiber.
If we were using laundry blue to dye the fabric, this would be awful. You don't want bright pigments migrating from the fabric and onto your skin and related clothes. But the amount of laundry blue that you put into your clothes is so small, and so faint, that you can't even see if it migrates onto something else. All you do is put in enough pigment to make your eye think the fabric is not yellow. This will come out, but the next time you wash it, you can just put more in.
This brand of laundry blue is so inert that the only reason you can't drink it is that it wasn't manufactured in a sterile environment. Prussian blue is completely edible. And, I mean, spaghetti sauce is also completely edible, and I don't want to put that on my clothes, so maybe that's a less than ideal point. However, I don't want to put spaghetti sauce on my dress because it will stain my dress. I want to put laundry blue on my dress, because it will stain my dress (in a controlled, even way). Please don't eat laundry blue, but also know that you don't need to call poison control if you do eat it*.
So, let's go on with adding it.
______ *Please call poison control if you feel you need it. This blog is not intending to provide medical advice in any way whatsoever. While everything presented in this post is true as far as the writer knows it, the writer also majored in fucking costume design and is not a doctor in any way whatsoever and also legitimately thought seagulls in San Francisco were called bagels because they were by the bay until she was like TWENTY THREE YEARS OLD so she's probably the dumbest person to take medical advice from.
Tumblr media
I start with a quart jar of cold water. The general rule is 1/8-1/4 tsp of blue for a load of laundry. I don't actually measure it anymore, because I know what color it makes the water when it's in the right amount.
If you have clothes that are white, and you just want to brighten them, you want to use the recommended amount of blue. If you're trying to remove a seriously yellow tint, you can go a little bit extra. If I'm trying to remove yellow from a blue garment, I will also go a little bit extra.
But this stuff is very concentrated. It's really easy to overdose and actually tint your garments blue. I rarely go over 1/4tsp (that's like 1.25ml), even for big jobs. If it doesn't do it the first time, I'll do it a second time. It's more work, but it's also more controlled this way.
(Yes, my dye sink is a mess, but that's because that sink is exclusively used for dyeing things. Dye gets places and it does not come out)
Do not, ever, just drip the blue into your hand-washing sink/bucket, your top-loading washer, or especially into your soap tray on your front-loading washer. It will not disperse properly, and it will give everything you wash--and, in the case of the front-loader, everything you wash for SEVERAL cycles--an uneven blue marbling. Get yourself a mayonaise jar and drip it into cold water.
Tumblr media
I have a front-loading washing machine with a rinse-and-spin cycle, and with a soap tray that does not lock. Some machines will lock the tray so that it can't be opened during the cycle, and you'll have to find another system for that. I just wait until I can hear the machine running water through the soap tray, and then I open it just enough to dump my quart of water in there. When I can see that the water in the machine has turned a light blue, I know that the laundry blue got into it. If I dump the blue into the soap tray before starting the cycle, the full quart won't fit. Also, I think the machine actually dumps whatever is in the tray out on the rinse cycle, so that it doesn't accidentally add soap to the cycle, which is probably a good system but makes adding things to the rinse cycle a bit harder.
If you have a top-loading machine, set it for the agitation cycle, with no soap, and dump the blue in once the machine is half to completely full.
If you want to add the blue to a regular laundry cycle, you can do that, too. Just know when the rinse cycle starts, and be there to dump the blue in once the machine fills up with enough water.
If you're washing by hand, and want to add blue to your rinse cycle, I recommend soaping all the clothes, washing all the soap out, and then just dunking them in a basin of nothing but water and the laundry blue. You don't need to rinse them after this, just let them dry.
Tumblr media
So, here's an armpit before and after I did stain-removing treatments. I don't have one that's specifically before and after the laundry blue was added, but you can see the progress.
Also, it's important to note, because the white areas of this dress were so yellowed, even after I went through all the oxidizing treatments and washing, laundry blue can't actually get them back to a bright white. It neutralizes the yellow color, but it doesn't lighten fabric at all. I got a pretty decent light gray, which I'll accept as good enough for now.
If anyone is curious, one of the reasons I used that professional textile detergent on this dress was that it preps the fabric for dyeing, and makes sure that the dye takes evenly. While adding laundry blue isn't dyeing, I did want to make sure there was nothing on the dress that could stop the laundry blue from settling on the fibers in an even way. I don't have ANY evidence that laundry blue will work better after the garment has been synthrapol'd, but it makes sense in my head, so I went with it.
This dress still needs some new elastic before it's done, but that's where we're going.

You Only Water Plants With Cool Water
Rukawa Kaede x reader, sfw, fluff, word count 1,435
reader is a painter
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rukawa and you both had practice. Studio sessions, gym time, he needed to go to the store for new basketball shoes, you needed new paper or canvas. He knew when you had had a bad day. When every stroke of pigment was wrong, when you had to change water too many times. You knew when he had messed up his scoring percentages, or when he’d landed a shot not to his liking.
You also had good days though. Ones where you would be electrified, dragging Rukawa to the tiny bedroom studio in the apartment, excited to show him a new piece. He tried to be subtle about sharing his smaller successes with you. Quietly asking to go on a walk to the park on weekend mornings, picking up a basketball before heading out the door.
While Rukawa couldn't exactly understand painting, or art, he did understand you. He saw how hard you worked, the same as him. You too were striving for something. So he lets you ramble on about new art books you had bought, different painters you admired, ones you hated, an art supplies store you wanted to try your luck at. This was also how you understood him. You saw how at home Rukawa watched all the NBA games, kept tabs on different players.
The two of your respective passions consumed lots of your life. Which is why he didn't mind when you had the door to the studio closed when he got home from the gym. You didn't bother him when he was watching a game. He would sleep on the small couch you had tucked in the corner of the studio, the radio giving a play by play of some game. Legs hanging off the arm rest, simply enjoying being in your presence. Some days you would go to his practices, half watching, half sketching out ideas for a new chunk of canvas. This was one of those days.
Looking up from your lap you see that practice is almost over. You set aside your work to focus on Rukawa completely. He really is something else on the court. Brash, aggressive, and still sly. Those parts of Rukawa were the same. The part of him that bluntly told you while out shopping what did look ugly, that way you swore he moved stuff around in the fridge to mess with you, or how he shoulder checked people a little too often. When he was playing basketball it was like the various gears and screws that made up Rukawa were perfectly made to play, like it was the only that life made sense to him. It added something to his outward psyche, a fire of energy that exuded from every pore.
You watch as the team starts to wind down. Shooting from various points on the court, running sprints from one side to the other, to end practice there was a complicated passing drill that you couldn't follow. You were prepared to leave, grab some take out on the way home, but when Rukawa came over to you he flopped onto the bleachers.
“Hey! Come on you can't sleep here”
With a sweat towel covering his face he mumbles,
“I can sleep anywhere, just give me a couple minutes”
But you know with Rukawa that a couple minutes can range from thirty minutes to hours. You pull on his arm trying to get him up, his eyes are stubbornly closed though. You poke, you blow air on his nose, you ruffle his hair and pull on his clothes. When that doesn't work you try threats.
“I won't pay for dinner”
“I was going to pay”
He says, words muffled by the towel. Exasperated you sit back onto the cold bleachers. You reach into a plastic bag you have settled down by your feet. It's from the craft store, new paint, new brushes, you had stopped there on the way to see Rukawa. Cautiously you pull out some paint and let it rest against Rukawa's skin.
“If you don't get up, I’m gonna paint you”
“I dont care”
“Really?”
“Why would I care?”
Before you two had been playful, teasing, but when he asks that he is genuine. Like he couldn't possibly comprehend why that would bother anyone. He has one eye open now, peaking at you, seeing that you are considering it now.
“I don't care, go ahead, just let me sleep”
At first you're still a little apprehensive. You are slow to fill up one of the paper cups from the players bench with the water fountain. You use the colors little by little. Mixing them in the palm of your non dominant hand. You start with his arm. The paint moves differently on his sweat tinted skin and you have to adjust.
Rukawa floats in and out of sleep. Lazily watching your concentrated expression move expertly over him. He likes the way the brushes feel, the cool of the paint. He notes that you're holding his hand differently, it's deliberate, your fingers not laced with his but clasping onto him. You do this so you can twist his arm this way and that. He can see blues and greens mixed onto your own skin in puddles. Then he’s back asleep.
You are no longer paying attention to Rukawa, or the dance group that came to use the gym for practice. You like working here. The gym lights are bright, the AC blasting cold air. You were originally only going to do something small. But now Rukawa's entire right arm has been consumed by paint. You are putting the last few strokes of detail on his arm knowing that you aren't done yet. You are afraid to dab at the paint to see if its dry, you blow on it and Rukawa gives a small smile at the sensation.
You pull the towel off of Rukawa’s head and lay it over his chest, placing his arm there too. You grab your bag of supplies and move to the row of bleachers below Rukawa. His left leg your new target. This is harder for Rukawa to sit through at first. The bristles of the brush more ticklish, but it is soon calming once again. He wants to see what you’ve painted on his arm but his eyes are still so heavy, he so tired.
“Wow you're really good!”
“Thanks! He’s a pretty good canvas!”
Rukawa wakes at the sound of your voice.
“Oh sorry I didn't mean to wake you!”
It must be one of the girls from that dance team he decides.
“It’s okay he sleeps plenty”
You tell the girl, she laughs a little before waving herself away. You're packing up your things, swirling brushes into the cup of water, twisting paint tubes closed. Finally feeling satisfied with his nap, Rukawa slowly gets up. Used to sleeping wherever he pleases the dull ache from the bleachers doesn't bother him much. He rubs the sleep from his eyes and sees it.
You've painted a river. From his right shoulder to his left ankle is a river. Patches of grass and flowers growing along parts of it, stones, clouds, waterfalls, waves of water. It’s dynamic, twisting over the grooves of his muscles. You are surprised at how gentle his fingers move along the outline of the water, tracing it down his whole arm. In between his knuckles the water fades off his hand in droplets. The red flowers a bold contrast to the cool colors of the water. Fish leaping in and out of the water, some not even breaking the blue surface of paint, shadows of warm color beneath the water.
“You like it?”
You ask, he only nods, still admiring your work. You get him off the bleachers, once standing the daze he was in wears off. He grabs his duffle bag and the two of you head out. The night air is refreshing, the sky dark blue but bright like how it is in the summer. The street is still buzzing from the dusk. People on the way home from work, light traffic in the street, store and street lights flickering in the newness of the night.
“I’m sorry”
“Huh?”
You don't know what Rukawa could possibly be apologizing for.
“I’m gonna have to take a shower and the paint will wash off”
“That’s okay I knew that when I did it”
Rukawa seems discontent with this answer but you aren't sure how to help ease him. At the next block Rukawa turns the wrong way.
“Where are you going the-”
“Walgreens”
“What?”
“They have disposable cameras at Walgreens.”
