ISAT BAD END THEATER AU NOTES/SUMMARY (MAJOR FULLGAME SPOILERS FOR BOTH BAD END THEATER, AND ISAT/ SASASAP) After a long time brainstorming with friends I present to you.. “THE BAD TIME THEATER AU”!

This au is mainly created by me and @coffeewolf54 / @coffeewolfart together! This is not a exact 1-1 au and will def have some unique stuff in here to better match the themes of isat and bad end theater!

I’ve talked about this Au with a lot of my friends on discord ( thank you @felikatze @daily-odile @tealgoat and everyone else who decided to draw art for /listen to me ramble about me and coffee’s au.)

The general gist of the story and everyone’s roles are under the cut:

|Welcome one and all esteemed guests to THE BAD TIME THEATER! A place home to many tragic tales on display for the world to see.|

|I am “TRAGEDY”- (aka the Playwright and Narrator). Alongside me is “COMEDY”- (aka The Director) to help showcase what our theatre has to offer to you all. |

|The premise is simple: You can choose between one of four actors to see their stories and it is our job to show you their fates! Don’t fret if you are unsatisfied with a particular ending, my dear Stardust and I can reset the stage anew! That being said every path often leads to tragic ends..but ah, what else can you expect from a place like this? |

|Even still..even now I wonder.. if this unlucky cast can be saved…|

|…Oh well. We should move on now~!|

|Without further ado… let’s meet the main cast! |

[ISABEAU: “THE HERO”] - A human. His role is the courageous defender that was appointed by the King himself with slaying monsters and protecting people. He is good friends with the Maiden and has been over the years questioning their role that’s been given to him. The Hero is fairly certain that he has never met any demons before personally but very adamant in the belief that not all demons would want to hurt others. (Though if he were being completely truthful he’d much rather be a fashion designer then have to fight anyone. )

{ MIRABELLE: “THE MAIDEN”} - A human. Her role is the faithful maiden who’s meant to passively fulfill her destiny of being martyr lest the town supposedly be at risk from being attacked or killed by evil monsters. She is good friends with the Hero and tries her best to be a devout follower. A huge fan of stories and curious to see if demons are anything like the tales she’s read in her books. ( Though if she were being honest… she has some doubts about her role in life and wants to take action. )

< ODILE: “THE OVERLORD”> - A half demon (half human). Her role is the (seemingly) cold and pragmatic ruler of the demons, gaining the title after her father recently passed away. She is described by other people as standoffish, she seems to have taken in the Underling and their older sister under her protection. Wary of humans and tends to lean towards keeping her subjects safe by having very little interactions with them. ( Though if she were to tell the truth, she admits to wanting to have a world where demons and humans can coexist peacefully.)

( BONNIE: “THE UNDERLING”) - A demon. Their role is to serve the Overlord and was tasked to help by providing support to their people by creating food for everyone. The underling and their older sister got saved by the overlord a long time ago- so they’ve been really loyal to her ever since then. ( Though if they were being honest, they want to help protect everyone like the Overlord does and not be forced to stay on the sidelines.)

hi im ranting (positively! this game kills me but in a good way) about breath of the wild again

i know it's controversial but i love the way the story of the game is told. because you start the game in the middle, perhaps near the end, of the story. the game is entirely through link's perspective and he wakes up knowing and remembering nothing. in turn, the player starts off knowing nothing. the past is revealed as the story goes along, and the player learns about the past and about the land as link does. there are little tidbits about hyrule and about the calamity scattered across the land. an old woman in hateno village tells you of an age of desolation that she grew up in. the travellers you see on the road are younger people because they're described by older characters as more bold, whereas the older characters grew up being told to never leave the village, it's too dangerous outside (compare this even to tears of the kingdom, where travellers are more common because the land has been safer. even older characters have left their home to travel elsewhere (not including the lurelin villagers)). battlefields are still strewn with old rusty weapons and deactivated guardians that no one but monsters will go near. myths and legends about the princess and hero have been passed down, to the point where their legitmacy is questioned and everyone has a different opinion on them.

it's environmental storytelling. it's things like seeing drawings and a bow in zelda's study and seeing a child reading a storybook with a hero that wears a blue tunic similar to link's. it's the stories that the villagers share about old myths that turn out to be true. it's the ruins scattered across the land, long since overtaken by monster camps but still unmistakably being houses that people once lived in. it's the utter lack of civilization anywhere remotely near the castle and the feeling of dread in the ruins of the town that surrounds it. it's a kingdom entrenched in its past, with no ability to move away from it until the calamity is finally defeated.

#head into the wall. i love this game so much #legend of zelda #breath of the wild #and no i dont hate totk for getting rid of the sheikah tech and replacing it with zonai tech #the zonai tech is foreign and new to the people of hyrule and theyre EXCITED about it #how many zonai researchers are there in totk vs how many sheikah researchers in botw? #people are wary of the technology that destroyed their home a century ago #and they're terrified of the guardians that still roam the land #i still hold that link likely was behind the reason why the shrine of resurrection was completely dismantled #it's kinda like majora's mask in which half of the story is in the side quests and the characters #mm had a plot yeah but it kind of accompanied the rest of the setting #link had a goal but he also had so many people to talk to #botw is similar. link has a goal in mind but he's also one to help others #and if someone literally just lost their chickens or if their husband is sick and needs medicine. he's willing to help them out #the world is just as important as the plot itself and i think i like that more #than just a linear plot which is accompanied by the world #botw totk and mm reward you for exploring #(along with some of the others like twilight princess and a link between worlds) #but it's very different i think when half of the game is about exploring #or more than half even. you have your goal but you have to get there first #and there are so many ways you can get there and so much you can encounter along the way #biting screaming crying #the bow is in zelda's room but close enough

Another cool thing about playing Fallen London is encountering stuff and thinking "-oooohhh THAT is what that thing in Sunless Sea was refering to!!!"

#like today i was admiring the header artwork in fallen london when you are dreaming of Arbor #then this evening i played some more Sunless Sea and as I sailed towards Adam's Way i stared at the fly statues #as if for the first time. then docked and stared again at the art poster for port Apis Meet and went '....Ah' #i think for me a lot of the specific location details can be difficult to remember bc they're baffling and only hint vaguely at what each #place is. which is understandable bc it's likely expected that you would have come across Sunless Sea via Fallen London (unlike me) #so I'm sure some of the SS vagueness would not be vague if you'd been playing FL for years #whereas i managed to do 100 hours on Sunless Sea before even having ever heard of Fallen London ahaaaaa #but yeah... now i can say i understand a hell of a lot more about Adam's Way now i can link to Arbor and Elder Continent #writings I've encountered so far in FL #very exciting

One of the things that also bothers me about the “you must experience *insert trauma* in order to write darkfic about” narrative it is that it requires disclosure (which not all people want to do) and sometimes even veers into the territory of having to provide proof. When people like survivors of assault often have compounded trauma of not having evidence, having people doubt them or try to ruin their credibility. They don’t need to also face that from people because they read/wrote a FANFIC.

It also fosters this culture where people think it’s normal/acceptable to share really explicit trauma with strangers with little warning. And then even use it as a trump card. Like Person A might say, “Really loved *insert fic with an age gap relationship*”, and a total STRANGER feels entitled to say, “Wow, well I *insert graphic description of grooming/assault/etc*, so—” When 1) you don’t know what Person A has been through (again, gets at forced disclosure), and 2) you’re potentially triggering people by making them unexpectedly have to read something that they might not be in the right headspace to see.

Idk. I feel like I’m not saying this in a way that makes sense but I have a lot of feelings about it.

unnecesarily rambling answer inc. first of all: i completely agree with you. that’s the point of my tag #a psa on forced disclosure (see also the last reblog). i’ve seen writers get wildly dogpiled on and ‘forced’ into disclosing why they made the writing choices that they did, and it’s awful. fuck that. bad enough when the person whose identity/legitimacy under attack is a mainstream trad pub author (or professional actor) who has an entire professional team to manage this for them — but fanfic authors??? regular people? whose fic was maybe only intended to be read by like five people and who are just hoping their efforts in this silly little hobby will make their lives a little more bearable, a little more fun even? no real people are getting hurt, except maybe people who have wandered into a space they weren’t meant to be in, that wasn’t meant for them. yeah no patience for that here — and all the sympathy for these poor authors. you did not deserve that. you do not need to justify yourselves. also: the only things you are obligated to warn for on AO3 are the four major archive warnings. CNTW is a perfectly valid option too. ANYTHING else is courtesy.

as a very happy enjoyer of darkfic, if i have any trauma at all, it is entirely my business to decide who i want to tell, how, what, when, etc! my choice to not disclose anything publicly here—including age and pronouns—is 100% intentional i promise. i could be a minor. i’m on multiple 18+ discord servers. i’m not a minor 😂 i could be a swamp thing. if the possibility of that makes you uncomfortable genuinely please leave, i do not want to make anyone uncomfortable here!

ON a very different note — that said, there are benefits to disclosing! very different from Trauma (or is it?) but i personally found it extremely helpful that a lot of these fics were tagged or otherwise mentioned in the a/ns to be written by disabled authors. same too with POC characters, and gender/sexual minorities — it makes me a) more likely to seek these fics out, and b) read them with a slightly different eye than i might otherwise. so. i reiterate, not an obligation, AT ALL, but i’m very thankful for any authors who feel safe enough to share these things about themselves!

i also do wonder if choosing to disclose and talk about it might be empowering, in a way — but to be clear: this is a completely separate discussion from forced disclosure. i hardly imagine forced disclosure is empowering for anybody lol.
