#it's the combined work of yosuke and yu
a-sketchy · 16 days
Note
as the resident Yosuke scholar, do u have any thoughts on him repeatedly bringing up the anxiety of kanji’s shadow being witnessed by the wider public 🎤 👀
OOOOH, yeah that point is so interesting, yosuke’s behaviour during kanji’s dungeon is so fascinating and so different than what i had expected. i think it’s one of yosuke’s reoccurring fears blown up on a way larger scale through the reflection of kanji. that like more than anything he’s scared of being, he’s scared that anyone will perceive him like that, cause that makes it true and means that scrutiny is warranted and inevitable. i think being seen by the public turns discomfort into shame
Tumblr media
i like this line from p4d a lot cause cause it’s specifically that the fear is of being seen as uncool, not that he’s uncool in the first place, cause he knows he is, and i think that’s the precedent for like all of his anxieties. scarier than the idea of liking guys is the idea of being perceived as gay.
there’s probably something to be said for how yosuke’s shadow was only ever seen by yu (and teddie but he’s not a person), and how with the realization that the midnight channel is broadcasting all of this combined with the particularly sensitive subject matter of kanji’s shadow, yosuke is realizing “oh shit this is BAD bad, this is life-ruining stuff being broadcast to an audience. this could have been me” in real time. with his prince of junes and scorn from the inaba residents thing, i think he knows more than anyone else how scary it is for this town to judge you for anything at all, for things outside of your control. yosuke’s the most public-interfacing member of the IT at that point, he works a customer service job and is used to playing to the audience (/company/haters), and that combined with how he relates to kanji’s struggle means he sees just how terrifying this situation is

Some Yu/Souji headcanon I had
Note that I ended up combining both anime and manga adaptation for his characterisation since I don't like writing two separate characteristics for the same person
Yu/Souji hates receiving gifts and/or money due to his parents giving him gifts/money to make up for lost times. He later appreciated the gifts he got in Inaba as it's the first time he received something that wasn't from his parents
Yu/Souji attachment to cats stems from elementary school when he befriended a stray cat that his first elementary school unofficially adopted it. He wishes to own one once he finally has a fixed place to stay
Yu/Souji had made other types of origami during his spare time. While his favourite origami to make are cranes, he made different types of origami when he's alone in his room. Some of them are linked to each S.L. he has encountered and depends on who, it represents them by meaning/symbolism (Yosuke is frog, Yukiko is swan, etc.)
Yu/Souji love of model making and painting came from both of his father who work as a robotic engineer and often showed him how to create complex models. While being a robotic engineer was his childhood dream job, he eventually dropped it after his father gotten busy but still does it as a hobby
Yu/Souji had only seen pictures of Nanako prior to his move to Inaba. While hardly remembering Dojima by looks, he remembers his voice only because he heard it whenever his mother was calling Dojima before she herself gotten busy with work
Yu/Souji hate thunder on rainy nights only because it's too loud for him to get some proper sleep. He doesn't mind them if it's in the morning or when using it in battle
Yu/Souji absorbs knowledge like a sponge and can get a grasp on it after one or two tries. He only studies a lot because he has nothing else to do
Yu/Souji only gave the food that he felt comfortable making to others. Experimental food/ first-time trying is all his to avoid giving someone food poisoning
Yu/Souji used to own a stuffed animal bear that looks similar to Teddie when he was younger. However, he lost it on one of his moves and couldn't find it again. He doesn't want to speculate that his old stuff bear is Teddie as he doesn't want to think what's inside of his childhood toy is a man and not cotton
Yu/Souji owns a diary to write his feelings down whenever he's stressed. He mostly hid his diary under his futon until Yosuke found it (S.L. rank 5) and hide it in the same drawer where he keeps his origami
Yu/Souji's eyesight aren't terrible but his vision is still considered poor before he moved to Inaba. He doesn't get himself a pair of prescription glasses until college/university years as he doesn't think it's that bad
While visiting Port Island, Yu/Souji had a strange feeling of deja vu despite never visited Port Island prior. Unknown to him, due to being linked with the velvet room, Minato/Makoto is looking at him from his seal, making him felt like he had experience it before
Might be a bit off character but hey, I like player insert protag because it's fun to imagine what they are outside of mainline and spinoff. Anyways, here's a doodle of Yu/Souji. Ok, bye

Thank god Yomenaido bookstore was open today. It was his girlfriend's birthday today and he couldn't meet her at Aiya's empty-handed, aside from paying for an extra large beef bowl and anything else her enormous appetite craved. It was all on him. He still had quite a lot of money left from last year.
Yu entered the store and browsed through the various books lined up until he reached the manga section. Now, given Chie's bubbly personality, it only made logical sense to pick something adventurous and fun to read through. Finally, after a few minutes of careful consideration, he found one: Akame Ga Kill, featuring a female protagonist with a strong sense of justice.
He's sure that she will at least find it enjoyable. He paid for it in no time, asked the clerk to wrap it up nicely, and quickly made his way to the Chinese restaurant where it seems that she best him to it.
"Sorry I'm late." He looked apologetic for a moment and sat down beside her, planting a quick peck on her cheek. "Happy birthday, honey bun. I'm treating you today and I also got you something nice to read." He handed over the mystery book with a smile. "It's a long one, but I hope it's to your taste."
Somehow, Inaba's well-known steak skewer and Topsicle combo tasted much better with it being her birthday. Tough, chewy meat combined with the sweet, icy flavors made for one very happy brunette. Her second lunch was complete, and after waving goodbye to the counter clerk Chie made her next pitstop...right next door. Aiya's couldn't be missed on this important day, and this time she expected a guest to accompany her for this meal.
Although...she didn't see a familiar grey bowl-cut hair anywhere inside, not that many people were currently lounging or eating up their fill of noodles. By the time dinner came around, the scenery would drastically change. Nevertheless, she asked the teenage waitress for a two-person table, then patiently sat with her line of sight in perfect view of the door. He didn't forget their meetup. Yu wasn't like that. Friends and family always came first for him. Perhaps he was putting the finishing touches on his birthday gift to her?
Tumblr media
Whatever the case, the brunette hunkered down and kept herself preoccupied browsing the presents in her current stash. Of course, she took a few nibbles of some store-bought sweets and homemade candies from the other shops in the area, just to snack on in preparation for her third lunch. It's after she finished a piece of mochi her chocolate brown eyes casted towards the doorway, hearing the little bell sounded the arrival of her wonderful boyfriend.
"Over heeeere!!" Her shouts carried over the customers' heads and the clattering sounds of a working kitchen, just to get his attention. Once he meandered towards the table Chie rose up quickly to embrace him tightly, complete with an eager smile and light giggle. "My sweet, sweet kitty is finally here, heehee~. Don't feel bad about being late, I was already checkin' out some of the swag I got from Yosuke." She pressed her lips against his cheek, returning his affection in kind and releasing her tight hold. "And I see you brought me something too, riiiiiiiight?" It's snatched away already, paper flying in every direction since someone couldn't hold their excitement in much longer. Friend gifts were special, but a boyfriend gift had that little extra bit of love in it.
Tumblr media
"Oooooooooh, I've heard of this one before...but I never had the chance to start reading it." Chie didn't read too far into the pages, only briefly skimming the first chapter then setting it aside. It's a thoughtful gift, and one fitting the brunette's own tastes too. "Maybe I'll start reading it tonight after we party! Heehee~! I'm glad you wanted to spend some time with just me today, though." Oh she couldn't help herself! Screw sitting across from him!
Chie took the seat aside Yu, immediately locking lips with the boy and letting her arms drape over his shoulders. Did they make a bit of a scene? Ah, she didn't care! "I love you, sooooo so so much, you know? I probably told you that a zillion times now but...it's true." Her nose briefly brushed against his, and she let their foreheads gently rub together.
Tumblr media
"I love you a whoooooole lot. You being here has already made this birthday the best I can ask for..."

finally finished my persona q playthrough! ultimately, i thought it did some things well and some things not so well, but it was definitely more of a positive experience than a negative one. i'd rate it 3/5 in general. detailed thoughts under the cut!
for a bit of context, i like persona 3 a lot, dislike 4, and have minimal experience with etrian odessey (played a demo, enjoyed it, but knew the lack of plot/characters would mean I wouldn't have fun playing 40+ hours of it). i wanted to get through this game and q2 before persona 5 tactica came out so i knew what to expect story-wise (though the chances of me finished q2 before november are pretty much non-existent now lmao).
starting with the plot, i thought most of it was good, but there were a couple of weaker aspects. the gradually escalating creepiness of the labyrinths up until the rei reveal was really well done, and i absolutely loved the twist with her character. the way the themes from personas 3 and 4 were combined was sublime - her rage and sadness was so poignant, and it definitely managed to tug at my heartstrings. zen's whole deal is interesting too - i find persona doesn't tend to implement its god characters very well, so he and chronos were a refreshing take on it.
on the flipside, i didn't particular enjoy the plotline related to the actual persona characters. i chose to play the p3 route to avoid as many teddie/yosuke shenanigans as i could, and the whole senpai vs kohei thing felt like a child had written it. it's basically what happen in p3 canon but shittier. it reeeeeeeally didn't help that they use the investigation team as an example of a 'good' team, since their dynamics are rancid. i also think persona q really could have done a lot more with the 'ps: you're gonna forget this once you leave' thing, as opposed to it being a one-note revelation in the epilogue.
moving on to the characters... hm. very mixed bag here. on the positive side, it gave shinjiro in particular some much needed screen time - he actually felt like a genuine member of SEES here, as opposed to the guy who shows up and is then killed off almost instantly. it also toned down yosuke's creepiness a lot, which. well, i ain't complaining. also, i'm very happy yu/minato actually get to have a personality here. tbh persona MCs would really benefit from being upgrade from silent protags into something more similar to fire emblem three hopes shez (though probably with a little bit less character than them).
at the same time, akihiko (and to a lesser degree chie) are utterly butchered, and the portrayal of numerous other characters feels very surface level. sure, the cast is too large to really flesh everyone out, but... nobody should be feeling blatantly OOC. zen and rei also didn't really feel like people until the end of the 4th labyrinth, which makes sense from a plot perspective, but is bad from an actually-getting-attached-to-them one. as good as i found their storyline, as individuals, they're both pretty forgettable. ultimately, i think the character writing is fine in the strolls/during the sillier moments, but falls apart during the serious ones.
gameplay, yet again, was another mixed bag. the dungeon crawling is a lot better than in persona 3/4, especially in the later labyrinths where FOE movement is a lot more complex. i enjoyed most of the puzzles, and the little character moments scattered around the levels were fun too. mapping was cute, even if it was a bit of a novelty - i can't see it working on the switch or anything, but the 3DS is a good console from things like that.
of course, here's where the '.... but' comes in. in persona q case, i comes in the form of the combat sucking ass. the boost system is irritating to wrangle, but a necessary evil if you want good personas/not to chew through tons of items. in the end, i used impure reach naoto to basically skip 90% of the fights. also, what the fuck was that chronos gimmick? like, don't get me wrong, the death timer was cool in theory, but when i first fought him i only had 3 revival items on me because i simply wasn't using them!! suffice to say, i had to fight him and the spider again, and was pretty unimpressed with that.
the game is also really hampered by not sharing party exp. there's no way to use every unit unless you do tons and tons of grinding (and who has the time for that in the year 2023), but you also get penalised for not training certain units too. i didn't unlock ultimate personas in my run-through since i benched yu after the second labyrinth and didn't want to spend ages levelling him up asdfghjkl.
there was one gameplay thing i thought persona q did really well though... and that was sub-personas! god, i fucking loved that idea. like, i love it to the degree that i'd legitimately prefer it in the mainline games over the current wildcard system - let's just say i made an excited post when i saw this feature was returning in tactica. it adds a level of customisation which means any character can shine with the right investment, and i just think that's neat.

Disgaea/Persona Crossovers I want to see from Least to Most.
((It's no secret that I've wanted a crossover of some kind between these two games for the longest now. Just any type mention between the possibility of this puts a genuine smile on my face. That being said, there are games in the series I would like to see crossover more than the other. While I'm going to get excited no matter what it is, I'm going to list of which titles from their games I think would work the best. Though keep in mind, I'm ranking them not just in terms of gameplay, but instead of potential interesting interactions with the characters. Not including Disgaea 6 or 7 since Persona 6 and 7 aren't out yet, nor am I including Persona Q since Disgaea RPG is no longer available outside of Japan.
5.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this might come as a shock, but I'm putting the original Persona and Disgaea in last place. Even if we include Disgaea D2 and the Snow Queen route, I don't really see many interesting segments between the characters aside from making Laharl a secret boss or Eriko helping Etna creep Laharl out. I'm sure whatever comes out of this would be entertaining, but the cast from the later titles are personally more interesting together for me.
4.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that it's Disgaea 3 and Persona 3. Now I can imagine plenty of interesting scenes between S.E.E.S and Mao and his gang, mainly in terms of comparing and contrasting their schools. Just imagine the look on Mitsuru's face once someone tells her she would be considered a delinquent at Evil Academy and the look on her and Yukari's faces together when they hear Junpei would be an honor student. You won't be able to stop me from laughing my ass off. Then there's Mr. Champloo teaching Fuuka how to cook and Sapphire trying to pet/hug Koromaru at every opportunity. Now the reason I rank it this low despite everything
Tumblr media
is because I think Soul Nomad and the World Eaters to be more fitting instead of Disgaea 3, at least in terms of Aigis's story. It could be like S.E.E.S getting familiar vibes being around Revya and Gig while still trying to cope with the loss of Minato/Hamuko and Ryoji. Maybe this could lead to an alternate ending of the story as well.
3.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taking the bronze medal is Persona 2 and Disgaea 2. Combining my favorite Disgaea title with my least favorite Persona title? How's that for something? I was going to put this below the third titles, until I realized something. Now, there are a couple of interesting takes you can do with this like having a rock off between Eikichi and Axel or having Maya become a reporter for Pleinair for a bit. You can also have Tatsuya and friends dress up in Featherman outfits during the bonus Prism Rangers battle. And just as I was typing that, I'm already pictuing Lisa forcing Adell to dress up too so they won't feel outnumbered while Rozalin either sits down and watches the show while eating popcorn or willingly joins the fun herself. But the reason why I put it this high is because Adell and Tatsuya having conflicting views on family. If I recall correctly, and correct me if I'm wrong, but throughout Persona 2, Tatsuya is rather distant from his family as he's envious of his older brother and ashamed of his mother and father, while Adell is nothing but caring for his family to a fault, though he does have a grudge against his blood parents for leaving him when he was a baby. This has the potential of causing some sort of conflict between the two main characters, the sinful fires of main igniting on two different ends.
2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taking the silver spot is Persona and Disgaea 4. It was around this point here where I decided that I wanted to have a crossover between the two series I believe. Not only do you have Valvatorez and Fenrich commenting on Yu and Yosuke's bond and Halloween costume, but I can also see stuff like Rise trying to keep Artina happy and relaxed with all the shit he has to go through, trust me if there's anyone in the group that understands burn out, it's either Rise or at least Yukiko, Teddie trying to play and befriend Desco, but getting mixed results as she constantly blasts him, Naoto and Emizel talk about how to be mature, the list goes on. Hell, I can even see Adachi and Nemo having a "what are you in for" meme bit together.
1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But come on guys, you know the 5th titles of both games together are taking the #1 spot. The overall premise of the titles are similar together as they're about rebel groups trying to take down a corrupt system of power and both of the groups are the most likely to get along with each other swimmingly. Hell, I'm still working on my own crossover story featuring these two groups that you can read on AO3 right now (will try to update soon). But let me know what you guys think.))

Protags by level of Chosen One vibes
1. Minato/Minako Arisato
What are the chances for a robot and the personification of Death to fight just as your family is crossing a bridge near them? The plot of Persona 3 depends almost entirely on the actions taken by Minato/Minako.
They "answer a call" to Iwatodai, they have the potential (whether this is because of their natural talent or because they have Death inside them is anybody's guess), they are immediatly chosen as the leader despite the fact they're one of the newest members, Ryoji gives them the final say in the matter of killing him and it's only them IN THE ENTIRE WORLD with the power to seal Nyx away as a Messiah for humanity... a destiny prophecy would only have been a formality.
Yeah, these ones are Chosen Ones, alright.
2. Akira Kurusu
Instead of being chosen by destiny, this boy was chosen by a higher being. Yaldabaoth elected him and Akechi from the millions of teens in the world to play his rigged game. Everything was ready waiting for Akira to awaken his Persona and confront Akechi. Fated rivals and all that.
Being the one to deliver the final blow to his puppeteer was a plus, not to mention the fact that antagonists have a habit of offering Akira a seat at their table, whether it's as an accomplice, an enforcer or a right hand man. World defining choices, I may add.
Since odds don't matter to Chosen Ones, Akira will confront the man who put him in prison while on his probation.
3. Yu Narukami
Yu wasn't such a Chosen One as the last two, but he sure was elected out of every person who came to Inaba. Not because of who he was, but because of what he could represent.
Again, a rigged game but one not so supervised as P5. The Chosen One aura does linger on Yu. It's mostly a matter of parental pressure and internalized issues that make Yu such a "flawless" person rather than a mystical destiny. Izanami could have chosen Yosuke since he also came to Inaba recently. Naoto could have solved the mystery since she was so close to the answer. Adachi could have slipped and revealed himself on accident to another person.
All of the coincidences in Yu's life make his situation so ridiculous most people could confuse him for a Chosen One.
4. Maya Amano
The fact that she is mentioned in a prophecy ranks her higher than the other two. Unfortunately for Maya, her role in the Oracle of Maia is more Sacrificial Lamb than Chosen One. It was Maya who chose to join Tatsuya's Scooby Doo gang; she could have stayed still where she stood, not contributing anything to the story, and died anyways. Not to mention, that the last spots in this ranking didn't even have the Velvet Room for themselves, but shared it with their entire team.
Maya's role as the final nail in the Oracle of Maia does give her some Chosen One points, which would serve her better during Eternal Punishment. Once more, it were the choices of others (P2IS kiddos) the ones who would make her the protagonist of the next game, not some predetermined fate. The story starts with Tatsuya literally bumping into her by accident.
It was mostly Nyarly's fault that her group of friends ended up in the middle of everything anyways, and it wasn't even supposed to be lile that. Nyarly only wanted Jun to do the dirty work and Maya to die so that Jun would be easier to manipulate. P2? More like Nyarly tries to kill Maya saga.
5. Tatsuya Suou
See above for the chances of the Masked Circle to be the main group. Honestly, Jun is more of a Chosen One that either Maya or Tatsuya. Jun is Anakin while Tatsuya is stuck as Obi-Wan. Could have been anyone in his spot but it turned out that this was better for the main villain, so... up you go, buddy. Now go suffer so I can manipulate your bestie.
The choice to reset the timeline wasn't given entirely to Tatsuya. It was a group decision taken in the heat of the moment by the OG Masked Circle. It was Jun's personal issues that made the Tatsuya gang a target for demons. Before IS, Nyarly couldn't have cared less about biker boi.
However, like Maya, Tatsuya's level of Chosen One augmented in Eternal Punishment. It still wasn't because Destiny Said So, though, mostly because he is stubborn as fuck.
6. Naoya Toudou
My boy Naoya was just chilling at school when shit got real. Every single student in the school could have been the ones to go after Kandori (and by any I mean you, Tamaki) but they were Naoya's friends the ones who decided to go. See: Naoya's friends. Not Naoya. He's here mostly because Maki is his childhood friend and, hey, all his friends are going.
It's also my belief that it was mostly a combination of Maki's reality and Naoya's trauma the ones that gave life to Kazuya/Naoya's shadow, not the fact that he played a key role in Kandori's plan or anything. It just happened.
It also comes to mind the fact that in the manga, Yuka and Yukino were already halfway through the Snow Queen quest when Naoya turned up. He became more extra support than vital piece.

okay so awhile ago you posted something about Yosuke (crazy, right?) and in the tags I believe you mentioned something about how you don’t like Yosukes parents? Could you elaborate? bc I have not stopped thinking about it since you mentioned it (sorry this is so vague my memory is horrid skjdjfjgj)
OYSUEJGHHBKEJHDSGVDH oh my god okay SO. At first I just got ~vibes~ from him... like, I couldn’t quite pin down what made me think he had abusive parents, because obviously he never says anything to indicate it explicitly, but then I started noticing... small things.
I don’t want to say outright that I think they’re abusive (physically or verbally) and I also don’t think that Yosuke hates them, or necessarily even sees anything wrong with how they treat him, but I do think that their behavior has severely impacted Yosuke and led to a lot of the negative traits he displays.
To me, the most telling example is this conversation where he talks about Teddie being praised by his parents for being “thoughtful” very pointedly in front of him. It seems to be a reoccurring thing where they compare him to other people (primarily Teddie) and make him feel inferior. Yosuke’s a bit of a pushover, and frequently gets taken advantage of monetarily, and in this case he’s caved and lent Teddie a significant chunk of his savings for their trip to Tatsumi Port Island... only for him to spend it on presents to suck up to Yosuke’s parents which makes Yosuke look unthoughtful. Yosuke clearly sees it that way, even if Teddie hadn’t intentionally planned it out from the start as such (he calls Teddie “surprisingly shrewd”).
Tumblr media
Yosuke gets told off either because a) he didn’t want to fight back/argue, and instead just took a passive stance instead of telling his parents that he was the one to lend Teddie the money in the first place, and thus didn’t have any left to buy them gifts, or b) his parents think so little of him that they don’t believe him at all. He specifically says he doubts his parents understand, which makes me think that he did try to explain the situation.
There are also several instances of a large Junes event being Yosuke’s responsibility, or at least of him thinking that he has to scramble to make things work, like the Junes concert, where he says he’ll have to move away if it doesn’t pan out; maybe this is his own thinking, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was something his dad said to scare him into helping, especially considering he MUST know that Yosuke is friends with Rise, or the time during the summer where he calls Yu and begs him to help out. Yosuke isn’t a manager, but he’s still got all the responsibilities of one, and even tries his best to work out other employees’ problems as well (look at his SL).
The Junes concert in particular really sent up some red flags for me, especially because Yosuke says this.
Tumblr media
“Awfully nice for some reason”?
Yosuke’s got terrible self-esteem, there are countless times where he’s shown to be overwhelmed and embarrassed by completely genuine praise from his friends. In one of the drama CDs he mentions that he intentionally doesn’t try his best in school because he doesn’t want to disappoint himself by doing poorly while also knowing that he gave his all. It really makes me think that his parents just have an abysmally low opinion of him, and he’s adopted that same view of himself.
There’s also several scenes where he talks about his parents finding his porn (or Teddie showing it to them) and in his SL he says his mom “read the title out loud to [his] family” which on top of obviously indicating his family is pretty conservative about that kind of thing, also means he’s had to learn to be secretive with them to some extent. In Arena, Yosuke’s mother goes as far as burning the porn Teddie finds. Even if it's meant to be humorous, Yosuke's property is still being destroyed.
Now these next few things are more... abstract and can definitely be argued, but personally I still find them important to point out when discussing the topic.
Yosuke obviously struggles with toxic masculinity, and similarly to Kanji, feels like he needs to be the ideal, strong man that protects the weak, etc. Even without looking at specific dialogue, you can tell that Yosuke’s been raised to think he needs to be a “real” man, that displaying more “feminine” behaviors is a sign of weakness; because that isn’t just subtextual, it’s something he very visibly displays, it’s part of his arc. He can’t mourn and cry, he has to get revenge (because he couldn’t protect Saki at the time and he watched helplessly as she died, it makes it his fault), he says hugs are for girls (a common sentiment, but he had to learn it from somewhere), and any time he slips up and reveals his actual feelings, he has to overcompensate, let everyone know that he’s just your average teenage boy who’s definitely interested in women. Yosuke’s not the most masculine guy, he likes fashion and cares about his appearance (the bar is so low) and I’d bet that if he were given space to explore his interests without any expectations, he might actually find he’s into stuff that goes against what he’s been taught. He admits to liking crossdressing, then walks it back; not because he’s ashamed of it (on the contrary, once he realizes people found him cute, he openly brags about it), but because he thinks he SHOULD be ashamed of it.
It’s why he feels so threatened by Kanji, who completely takes him by surprise when he realizes his outer appearance and interests don’t match up. Now Yosuke’s got to compete with Kanji over who’s the manliest, show that he’s not like Kanji, because Kanji’s already accepted that side of himself, and it totally goes against everything Yosuke’s been taught to think is “normal”.
So then we look at lines like this.
Tumblr media
On its own it’s nothing special, but it’s not just the slogan itself, it’s the way that Yosuke specifically says that his dad is still saying it. Combining this with what I mentioned previously about Yosuke’s behavior, and a few other tidbits, like Teddie mentioning that he watches violent war movies with Yosuke’s dad, it definitely makes me think he’s the type of guy who’d try and push Yosuke into being more masculine, being a traditional, unshakable, unemotional man.
Lastly, there’s the recently identified album on Yosuke’s shelf in arena, and what do you know, one of the songs on it (The Chain, by Mr. Big) has these lyrics...
Tumblr media
In my mind, I see Yosuke’s mother as an incredibly controlling, strict woman who expects her son to be utterly perfect, and even when he’s good, it’s never good enough. Yosuke’s father is busy with Junes, and while he isn’t around the house too often, Yosuke sees him at work quite a bit, large and in-charge, not allowing anyone to see weakness, he leans on his son because he can’t bring himself to ask for help. Yosuke’s left to pick up the slack, and he’s taught by example that relying on others is cowardly, that being intimidating gets you further than being “nice”. Even though Yosuke obviously goes against this, he can't fully commit for fear of standing out and disappointing his parents, and that makes him passive; he ends up being a pushover, and neither of his parents are happy about that. He’s a “disappointment” to them, it’s one of his defining traits that everyone loves to bring up. It's something that's shown to really get under his skin, but he can never do much more than get angry, because he truly thinks he is a disappointment, he doesn't think highly of himself, even if he protests.
Maybe I’m reading into all of these things a little too much, but... I don’t know, I’ve said it before, but I just don’t see how half of Yosuke’s personality would have been shaped by anything other than his parents being Not Great.

@arcanalight -- yosuke ♥
A single beam was all that supported the weight of the crumbling castle. Splintering and bending underneath the strain of the last few hours. From the letter, the police station, and then the rain slicked highway where Dojima had crashed into Namatame’s delivery truck. Sustaining a concussion, a fractured spine, cracked discs, bruised lungs, and multiple other abrasions that would leave him bedridden for weeks. He was lucky to be alive. But even when Dojima was healed and released from the hospital, Yu knew there would be complications following. His final words filled Yu with a bottomless well of sorrow: Nanako is what makes life worth living. A last wish, a final promise, as he lied there on the side of the road pleading for Yu to save his daughter who he may never get to see again, as they waited for the paramedics to hoist him onto a stretcher and Adachi to climb into the back before driving off.
Nanako appearing on the MIDNIGHT CHANNEL had rattled him. Confined inside a tiny room like a caged animal and then going into an impulsive state the more panic stricken he turned. If not for Teddie holding onto him, Yu would have jumped inside of Namatame’s van and through the TV to just about anywhere on the other side. Then he got to play the role of a marionette, unable to control his power as it crashed down on his friends: hitting Yosuke point blank with a blast of TAM LIN’S superior lightning and then being forced to summon BEELZEBUB, a trump card, to wipe the others out. Their infallible teamwork, months of fighting along side each other, showed itself in that moment as they worked together to stop Yu’s attack. Yet there was always more to come, Naoto had nearly been struck down too, another bolt of charged lightning crashing over TAKE-MIAZUCHI’S wide back and taking the blow instead. He’d begun to fizzle out, static racing over his impressive structure and skittering along the ground. He was resistant to electricity, but not to Yu’s unparalleled strength.
To free himself, Yu had to take matters into his own hands -- literally. He’d reached up for the hot disk above his head, and indescribable pain rushed through him as the palm of his right hand became seared and blackened. He’d barely been able to move it to fuse together KOHRYU; Dojima’s will guiding his unresponsive hand the final length of the way for the cards to combine. Saving both him and Nanako, the legends of dragons being guardians and protectors wasn’t just myth.
With the golden dragon on the field, Yu freed the others from Namatame’s possession and together they’d defeated his shadow. But it STILL wasn’t finished. The negative emotions surging outward from Namatame’s limp body attracted a black swam of shadows that threatened to suffocate them in their dizzying wave. In her last seconds of consciousnesses, Nanako had given Yu the power to summon SRAOSHA. The angel exorcised the shadows with their blessed attack. And then FINALLY, they escaped with Nanako and Namatame back to reality.
The hospital was an anxious blur of waiting and long, sullen faces. Everyone blaming themselves for what happened and Yu having to hold onto what little fibers of a strong and confident leader remained before they could finally crumble away to ash. Naoto, particularly hard on herself, was able to overcome her self-loathing state with Kanji’s blunt and direct words. Yu’s own rung tone-deaf in comparison. Crying about it wouldn’t change anything. Crying over spilled milk, wouldn’t clean it up. But this was too large of a mess to ever fix. Yu had a family, for the first time, and he’d lost it all in one night. Now he played the events of hysteria over in an unending loop, noticing his mistakes and faults from the beginning of the terrible day. It was all his fault. Why couldn’t he have seen it was Namatame sooner?
He tried to curl his fist, but the bandages wrapped around his hand tugged with the motion. Stinging pain flared up his arm, the medication he’d been given beginning to wear off.
The OPPRESSIVE quiet of the Dojima house, cold and dark with the rain trickling down the glass and off the roof arching over the patio outside. The uneasy solitude, the dark shadows as the door slid shut behind him. Yu moved further inward, shoes left behind in the genkan without care. He walked to the center of the living room, the heaviness inside of him finally toppling over and leaving a cloud of dust expelling upward to cloud the terrible devastation wrought inside of him.
Tumblr media
❝You should go home.❞  His voice felt small, too even and soft in the gloom as he fixed his melancholic stare on the flowing water along the sliding, glass doors. ❝I’ll be fine from here.❞ Yu barely heard the words that escape past his lips, ears filled with the gentle tapping of the rain outside. He was going to break and he didn’t want Yosuke to be around him when it finally happened, when the turbulence inside of him finally burst from behind locked doors. ❝We won.❞
      He lost.

I drew some adult!headcanons for the Investigation Team~~ I have some specific headcanons under the cut as well, but the most important thing to mention is that the found family lives on!
Yu Narukami
Yu moved to the U.S for college with his parents, and stayed there until 2017 when he graduated - which was also when his parents’ marriage fell apart and his mother returned to Japan. His major was going to be in Law, but part way through he realised that he was better suited for psychiatric work, and now has a degree in Psychology. He currently lives in a Tokyo apartment with Yosuke and their kitten, where he’s doing an apprenticeship at Maki Sonomura’s mental health clinic. He doesn’t do much with Persona anymore, but he did take up kendo, not quite certain how true Sho will be to his ‘I will kill you’ promise.
Rise Kujikawa
Rise’s idol career peaked in 2015/16, but she’s still nationally recognised as one of the most popular performers in her field. The biographical album she’s currently working on, ‘Never More’, will likely be her last, though she fully intends to remain in showbiz as long as she can hold out - only as an actress instead. Notably, in 2018 she played the role of the antagonist in the Featherman Musical. Her grandmother retired in 2019, so her parents moved to Inaba to take over the tofu shop, and she intends to follow suit once her idol career ends.
Yosuke Hanamura
Yosuke still has no idea what he’s doing with his life. He studied business in college just because he was good at it, but spent much more time enjoying his student life than studying. He’s currently living in Tokyo with Yu, supervising a newly built nearby branch of Junes, and plays bass in a band with his college friends on weekends. Around 2016, at the height of the Phantom Thieves incident, he became very self-reflective, and set out to better himself, working hard to atone for the Yosuke he had been in high school. His friends agree he’s the one who has changed the most.
Teddie
Teddie (and Labrys) decided he was going to try to become more of an ‘independent bear’ when Yosuke left for college. He attended and graduated Yasogami High, and then kept his job at Junes for a few years while he learned the basics of adulthood, though he remained in the Hanamura household in Yosuke’s old room. Eventually, he collaborated with Kanji to produce a line of Teddie merchandise at Junes, which gave both of their careers a huge boost. His current business venture: selling his custom glasses frames.
Yukiko Amagi
Though Yukiko was determined to take over the family inn, she did not actually do so completely until 2019. Instead, with a push from her friends and family, she took a brief apprenticeship through college, assisting the management of a huge hotel in the city. During this time, she realised she actually did have feelings for Chie, and they started dating in 2018, moving in together back home in Inaba after her apprenticeship ended and Chie graduated. (Plot twist, none of her career choices last. In her 30s she realises she should have - as all her friends did - listened to her Shadow and not taken over the Inn.)
Chie Satonaka
Chie pretty much did everything she said she was going to do after graduating high school, only with a slightly supernatural twist. Due to Inaba being the most high-risk place in all Japan for Shadow incidents, the Kirijo Group set up a headquarters there and the Inaba PD was given a group of Persona users masquerading as regular officers to protect the town from any future attacks. Realising she could combine her new skills with her unique Persona ability, Chie volunteered to be part of this group. She now lives with Yukiko and their dog in Inaba, fiercely training herself for when the world needs her.
Kanji Tatsumi
Defying all odds, Kanji attended college after graduating high-school, majoring in textiles and later going through teacher training so he could pass on his skills. In the meanwhile, thanks in part to Teddie, his work became known online, and he started selling his plushies all over the world. In their third year of high school, he finally became close with Naoto, and they eventually started dating. They’re married now, and they currently live together in a Shibuya apartment with their two cats, where an entire room is just filled to the brim with Kanji’s plushie commissions. It’s the cutest room in the house.
Naoto Shirogane
Naoto became more well known across Japan after the Inaba murders became publicised nationally and they set off on a solo career without the aid of their grandfather. Notably, the Shirogane Agency became the Shadow Operatives’ most trusted ally, and when the mental shutdowns began, Mitsuru asked Naoto personally to look into them, and they ended up closely investigating one Goro Akechi. They took a prolonged leave of absence at the tail end of the Phantom Thieves incident, when their grandfather suddenly died and their mental wellbeing took a serious hit. It wasn’t until late 2018 that the original Detective Prince started working again.

"I guess we were destined to meet." | @obeysword sent !
↳ squid game starters | accepting !
Fingers fiddled idly with satin drawstrings, the ten glass marbles within--all untouched--a surprisingly heavy weight in his hands. Twenty-five minutes had passed since they were handed the silly little things; how strange to think that the entire world had managed to shift so dramatically in such a short span of time. For one, shining moment Yosuke saw himself as a winner, their combined forces just unstoppable as they had been in the games before. Partners, united. But as they had stepped out into the warm, golden light of the mock alleyways, all that hope had diminished. Fading, like the setting sun.
Only one of them was going to walk back out.
Not wanting to rush their final moments together, Yosuke had suggested they wait. What was the rush? They both knew one of them was going to die when that timer ticked down, and Yosuke didn’t want to hurry into it. There was still half an hour left, half an hour to talk and laugh and pretend there was going to be a future. Thirty minutes for things to still be all right, even if they hadn’t been all right in some time. But when he was with Yu nothing outside seemed to matter. They had each other, their company the warmth in the middle of winter, the shelter in the storm. How foolish it had been to think that their bond would be able to prevent something like this.
As each minute slipped past, Yosuke tried harder and harder not to think about the looming deadline--and for a while, it worked. Laughter spilled out of him as he talked about the things he wanted to show Yu, about the ways he’d spend his money if he made it out. More than once he caught himself saying ‘we’, as though they were just on some retreat and waiting to head back home together at the end of the day. And each time he caught himself he paused, his heart aching with the knowledge that there was no ‘we’. In five more minutes there would never be ‘we’ again.
     It wasn’t fair.
“You really think so?” he asked, shifting the bag so that the marbles within clattered gently together. Somewhere to the side of them a gun rang out, the sound oddly less jarring than it had been only days before--as though death was a familiar friend, constantly beside them. “I kinda thought that too. I used to think that the whole destiny thing was fake, like just fairytale stuff to make people feel better. But that was all before I met you.”
True fondness filtered into his voice, warm color blossoming across sheepish features. As embarrassing as it was to be honest, he knew this was his last chance to say whatever needed to be said. No matter the result, one of them wasn’t leaving that room, and everything inside of him would remain unsaid. Even if he survived, Yosuke knew he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he let that happen.
Tumblr media
“It probably sounds stupid considering where we are right now, but...I’m really glad I met you. Partners ‘til the end and all that, huh...? Never thought it’d be so literal, though. So...so that’s kind of a bummer.” A shaky laugh rumbled in his throat, shaky hands wiping away stray tears. “Our time’s almost up--and right when we were gettin’ to some good stuff. Seems like that’s always how it goes. Let’s give it a couple more minutes, though. Destiny might have lead us here, but it can wait just a little bit longer.”

[I’m halfway done with my essay so I’m letting myself take a short break to post some Magician!Arcana headcanons before I hunker back down to finish it.]
Adachi is in a similar spot to where he is canonically by the time the protagonists save him from his dungeon. He’s bitter and hates socializing, thinking making bonds is a waste of time. He’s not much of a team player at all, and that combined with this habit of insulting people and his general attitude is part of the reason he doesn’t get hired much for any of his performing jobs. He also still lives very stringently and has to eat a lot of cheap food (insert cabbage joke here), but that’s more because he has a very unsteady income and less because of a low paycheck and high rent.
At first, Adachi only teams up with the rest of the investigation team a) because he’s bored and they get money defeating shadows and b) for a share of the reward money for catching the killer. As time goes on, however, and he actually starts forming bonds with the people around Inaba, he kind of grows attached to it in a weird way because it’s the first place he’s ever been that felt like a home (after his awful parents and kinda drifting after being kicked out), so he wants to find the truth.
That being said, after a while of working with the Investigation Team, he kind of ends up as the weird uncle of the team. By the time his social link is maxed out, that connection between Adachi and the members of the team is much more obvious and he’s clearly much less bitter and much more willing to put in effort for things because he now sees he actually has a purpose for his life where he didn’t have one prior.
Adachi is actually pretty good with kids if he wants to be (see Nanako), and though he’s a bad influence sometimes, you can tell his heart’s trying to fit in the right place. Nanako and Teddie adore his magic tricks and he’ll do them when begged to (with an eyeroll ofc), and he’s not bad at advice or cheering someone up, even though he’s not empathetic in the slightest. The other kids come to him for advice sometimes and Adachi jokingly offers them a beer and they go and Adachi spends what little money he has on beef bowls or steak skewers for them.
Really the killer in this verse depends on the plot my partner and I decide on. If the killer is Yosuke, Adachi leaves Inaba to give his performing job another shot and returns every so often when he gets bored of the city. He’s not famous by any means, but he has a small following, and it’s because he genuinely has a passion for what he does. If the killer is Dojima, Adachi stays in Inaba and adopts Nanako until Yu is old enough to decide if he wants to stay and help take care of her or not. He’s not the best at being any kind of parental figure by any means, though, and for a while it’s kind of hard despite how much Nanako likes him. The rest of the IT that stays in Inaba are just as determined to make Nanako feel like she has a family, though, particularly Teddie, so if Adachi and Nanako are home than you bet one of the IT is there with them. Adachi picks up any part-time odd jobs he can (basically every bulletin board job at some point), but most often is a bartender at the Shiroku pub. Once he’s a substitute teacher at Nanako’s middle school and she dies of embarrassment.

Miraculous Ladybug Crossover Thought:
You know... for all these salt stories over a liar, plus the crossovers with Persona 5...
Now that I’m thinking about it, it surprises me that there’s not much Persona 4 + Miraculous Ladybug stuff! One of the big themes is TRUTH, for crying out loud!
Here are some small ideas I’m gonna throw out:
Risette & Kitty Section/Jagged Stone/Clara collabs!
Marinette convincing Yukiko to pursue other things than innkeeping (because let’s be real, Yukiko’s decision to run the inn after all was shit).
Adrien &/or Marinette get a Shadow Self.
Yu x Yosuke hanging out with Adrinino!
Yukichie hanging out with Julerose & either Alyanette, Chlonette or some other WLW ship!
Dunking on Lila!
Eri getting advice & help from the other moms (Sabine, Marlena, et cetera).
Nanako being like an older, responsible sibling for the other kids (Manon, the Twins &/or Chris).
Hisano & Marianne getting along.
Dojima & Roger getting along over balancing policework with single (presumably in Roger’s case) parenting.
Dojima and Gabriel not getting along. They’re on very different sides of the law, aren’t they?
Shu & Max learning from each other or something like that.
Chie, Kou & Daisuke vs. Kim, Alix & Kagami
The Fox and the Kwamis (especially Trixx). Alternatively, Otis finding the Fox and getting only semi-willingly led on a quest.
Personas for some of the other P4 teens (Ai, Yumi/Ayane, Kou/Daisuke)
Adachi’s in jail; why would he be in Paris? Sorry, Adachi fans...
Miraculous Wielder Ideas:
Dragon!Yu = Wyvern
Monkey!Yosuke = Macaque (needs work...)
Ox!Chie = Minotaur
Bee!Yukiko = Hachisasare (Bee Sting, hopefully)
Turtle!Kanji = Ishigame (I think it means Stone Turtle)
Horse!Rise = Trailblazer
As for Teddie... wouldn’t it be funny if he just fought in the bear-suit? Hawkmoth would think he had a Miraculous or something!
(If you’re doing Adrien salt) Black Cat!Naoto = Kageneko (Shadow Cat, hopefully)
Otherwise, either make them the Moth or Peafowl wielder post-Hawkmoth/Mayura.
Alternatively, give them the Fox. They’d probs be something simple like Kitsune.
Leave comments and aliases for the above combinations or others (ex. Snake!Yukiko, Monkey!Kanji, et cetera)!
Valete,

k my hcs for the cities where Yu and Yosuke are from are (respectively) Tokyo and either Yokohama/Kawasaki or Saitama. For Yu, i think Tokyo works since it’s pretty often used as a default setting and Tokyoites are stereotyped as being rather taciturn. With Yokohama and Kawasaki, it’s urban enough and closest to Tokyo, but still, Yokohama is only the 2nd biggest city. A lot of it is just suburbs for people who work in Tokyo or Yokohama’s city centre.
I will say tho that Yokohama does have a bit of a reputation for having richer suburbs than the other Metro Tokyo cities (not counting Tokyo itself), and imo being a manager of a Junes (based on Jusco/Aeon, equivalent of Walmart Superstore or Tesco) is not really... a ritzy job; however, Kawasaki, the small city btwn Tokyo and Yokohama, has a bit of a bad reputation bc of the southern industrial area which means the rent is probably cheaper there. Saitama, another largely suburban city in Metro Tokyo, is also a possibility because it’s cheaper than both of the cities and people from Saitama apparently have like negative pride for it (as opposed to the infamous “Kanagawa Prefecture Pride”) bc it’s very... middle of the road in many ways. The stereotype of people there, esp the men, is that they’re kinda... like, nebbish. Anyway, it’s like kinda figuratively in-line with Yosuke to be from the 2nd biggest city and just that close to Tokyo, but still not quite. At the same time the absolute avg-ness of Saitama combined with the way the people there are stereotyped is just as “in-character”. Chiba was out just bc they’re stereotyped as being “provincial” which does not work for him at all. Overall tho, I think being frm a largely suburban city that’s extremely close to Tokyo works well for him bc I think being in places like that allow you to feel heavy ennui with a sliver of hope just by being in proximity to what is so often “the right place.” Moving to the sticks is would definitely be a strong push in the direction of ennui heading toward despair.

Sneak Peek of “Tightline” [A Souyo WIP]
[Or a WIP where Yosuke is an esthetician and Yu is a new fashion model. You guys ever see “Neon Demon”? It’s nothing like that.]
It wasn’t like Yosuke to be so nervous before a big show.
It would be one thing if he was a rookie, but he’d served as a make-up artist for Junes’ annual runway show since he’d started high school. The young man could go heads or tails around some of the company’s less experienced designers and successfully jive with even the most high-maintenance models. While he was no expert when it came to fashion, Yosuke prided himself in being versatile in how he created looks to pair with last-minute looks or adjustments.
Things never went off seamlessly, but it was never anything he couldn’t handle. A clothing swap that called for a smoky eye rather than a graphic, liner-based look; a model having an allergic reaction to a lipstick and Yosuke having to recreate the same aesthetic on a fresh face in half the time; or even when a burst pipe doused his brushes and palettes in water and he had to makeover models by pinching their cheeks for blush and applying loose pigments with his fingertips to models’ eyelids and lips. He’d washed his hands so much that day that blisters had formed on his fingertips and his palms were dry for days.
However, none of those occasions held a candle to the current degree of turmoil rousing the Junes esthetician department.
A delay on the subway had caused almost all their models and artists to be late. Except one.
Their newest model, Yu Narukami, had biked to the show from his part-time job and was waiting in Yosuke’s booth for further instruction.
“Yosuke!” his father called over a sea of bobbing, perfectly coiffed hairdos. “There’s a new model who needs your attention ASAP. Get to your station, now!”
Yosuke threw on his smock and made a beeline downstairs. He took the stairs two at a time before jumping into the landing and sprinting down one of the facility’s many back hallways.
Sitting there was a young man with silver hair and a sturdy frame. His shoulders, unusually wide compared to the build of the models they usually worked with, were corded muscle. His face was…definitely aesthetically pleasing to view. If Yosuke wasn’t such a staunch professional, he might have even dared to call the other man ‘handsome.’
But that was a whole can of worms he didn’t have the time or desire to open.
“Are you the new guy?” Yosuke asked as he shut the door and extended a hand to him. “I’m Yosuke. Sorry for being late! I tried to run, but…”
He was still panting for breath from sprint. That combined with his sudden entrance must have made him look genuinely crazy. In spite of everything, he didn’t seem off-out by the hysteria. He slipped his hand into Yosuke’s and gave a confident shake.
“No problem. It sounds like a madhouse up there,” he said. His eye contact was as confident as his handshake. He didn’t falter for a second. “I’m Yu Narukami. Nice to meet you.”
“Yu, huh?” Yosuke asked. “Nice name.”
“Thank you,” Yu smiled. “Wish I could take credit for it, but I didn’t choose it.”

The Investigation Team as Etrian Odyssey Classes
Well, I’ve done SEES, so I may as well do this for their immediate successors, as well. It’s certainly fun to put together!
.
Souji/Yu: Masurao from EOV. This is one of the katana-wielding classes, similar to the Ronin of the original game, with less focus on moving between specific stances in a convoluted system, and more on summoning enemies, controlling the battlefield, and applying a few very specific buffs.
The main reason I picked Masurao over Ronin is because, by default, this is a Therian class, and one of the skills Therians can pick up is the All-Out Attack. Discounting that, the flowing style changes of the Ronin are an excellent representation of the changing nature of the Wild Card- and it exists in Nexus, too!
Yosuke: EOIII’s Ninja. This class focuses on speed, wields knives, and can fill in the extra slot in the party by cloning themselves. This cuts into their HP, but you already wouldn’t want them taking hits to begin with.
You also probably shouldn’t be going into the Labyrinth without any way of restoring health, so it’s really a minor concern more than anything.
Chie: The Monk from EOIII has one main focus: hitting as hard as possible. Well, okay, that’s not the only focus, they can do some minor healing, but Monks can do massive damage, and can do so very reliably.
In Nexus, probably the closest equivalent would be a mix of Pugilist and Medic. In the case of Chie, Pugilist should definitely be her main class, though she could probably get away with subclassing as something different.
Yukiko: EOIII Zodiac. This is a magic-based class that focuses on targeting elemental weaknesses and gives boosts to hitting said weaknesses. For most true-to-character results, pair with whatever major healing class is available, though Monk and War Magus are also good options if you’d rather have more versatility.
...Not that you need it. I don’t think you actually need all of your skill points to make a fire specialty. (And if you’re going for all the elements, you might not even have the points to give to a subclass. Magic classes require investment.)
Kanji: I don’t want to say that all three of the ‘regular’ Zio boys are Pugilists, but... yeah. The particularly reckless builds fit his battle style far too well to try and squish him into anything else.
He’s just not allowed to handle the ultimate weapon.
Rise: The Troubadour was the original buff-focused class, eschewing offense in favor of making their friends stronger, as well as adding elemental damage effects to weapons. It has a large number of successor classes, all of which do the same basic thing under a different name, but the music association makes this one perfect for Rise.
Teddie: EO2′s Beast class comes in two forms- those who tank and heal, and those who rip their opponents to shreds. Teddie works well as either version, though the tank one is a bit more accurate, and translates better to other classes.
In Nexus, the best approximation for Teddie would be a combination of Medic and either Protector or Sovereign: Protector to better mimic the Beast class, or Sovereign to provide access to various buffs. In this case, Medic should probably be the subclass for best results.
Naoto: In Persona 4 Golden, one of Naoto’s best qualities is that she can take just about any role in the team. Missing an element? She can do that. You want someone to throw instant kills at Shadows? She does that too. Barriers? Done. Explosions? You got it. If you want something true to the character, you could stick Naoto into just about any class you want, and she’ll do it with style.
One class that stands out, however, is the original Alchemist. The most basic magic class there is, it stands out mainly because, in the second game and it’s remake, the Alchemist has the Force Break Eschaton, which does massive untyped damage to all enemies, as well as a version of Megido which is single-target. (But yes, Eschaton may as well be Megidolaon.)
But again, if you really want Naoto to fill a specific role, you can probably think of a justification for it without too much effort.

❛ oh, i’ve got a new trick i want to show you. ❜ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
hooo boy this one got away from me. i’m sorry about the length, but hope you enjoy this one, my dear friend!
warnings: NSFW | light/vanilla bondage
(Slower)
All his teenage life, Yu had been set up with the expectation that his first time with a girl would come after months and months of courting, that it would be sweet and tender and tentative, and that it would happen in the very smallest of steps, with lots of foreplay, etcetera.
Some of that had happened. The most noticeable difference was that he hadn’t ended up with a girl at all, but with Yosuke Hanamura, and there hadn’t been “months and months” of courting. More like … one month, before they couldn’t keep their hands off each other. And foreplay was a treat, but they didn’t often spend the short, uninterrupted periods they had alone together taking each other apart inch by inch. Not that Yu didn’t find that idea appealing (he did, very much), but there was simply never enough time.
And hormones, the thrill of a new, exciting relationship – these combined were a big reason they never waited for one of those long, romantic evenings to finally reveal itself. Their encounters always started innocently, with lots of kissing and gentle brushes of skin, but an urgency always overcame them, eventually, leaving them heaving and entwined on whatever they fell back on.
But now they were getting a little older, a little more seasoned, and after suffering for 4 months over a long distance, they were at last approaching a point where demonstrating their love together could be done a bit more … carefully.
Yosuke was visiting him during summer break, which (while it delayed Yu’s arrival in Inaba about a week) meant that the two of them had lots of opportunities to explore what that long-awaited notion of romance meant in the bedroom. Yu wasn’t surprised they’d started that search right away. Yosuke’s bag had been on Yu’s bedroom floor for perhaps two minutes before he’d pushed Yu, with all five fingers, back onto the bed and crawled over him.
“Can’t wait until after dinner, huh?”
Yosuke covered Yu’s mouth with his own at once. Naturally, this quieted him, as he sank deeper and deeper into the trap of Yosuke’s resolve. He’d nearly forgotten what words were by the time Yosuke pulled away, panting and red-faced and ripping off his shirt.
That alone was a special sight. They didn’t often see each other shirtless, even when intimate. It had happened, surely, but always briefly, and that was about as far as they’d gotten in terms of the layers shed during sex. Having Yosuke quickly and easily discarding the first piece of that barrier instantly did a number on Yu, whose heart beat furiously at the sight of his partner’s lean chest bathed in the pale light from his bedroom window. In the house they had all to themselves …
Yosuke looked into Yu’s eyes as he placed his shirt beside them, then slowly lowered himself back down, not closing his eyes until the two of them were close enough to kiss – and did. Slow, wet, deep, more intoxicating than any previous kiss of theirs had been. It found Yu’s hands on Yosuke’s hips, which gradually traveled down to the back of his thighs, and cupped. Yosuke exhaled into Yu’s mouth and shifted, bringing both his hands to either side of Yu’s jaw and tilting his head up, slightly, so that Yosuke could stick his tongue down as deep as he could into Yu’s mouth.
Yu was hard and hurting by the time Yosuke let go of him, and he was still clothed. (This had definitely been one of the reasons they hadn’t gone slow, he reminded himself.) He watched, dumbfounded and too aroused to speak, as Yosuke’s fingers went to his own belt and began unbuckling it. He stared at Yu’s face the entire time, as if he couldn’t bear to miss his reactions.
He un-threaded the belt through the loops and placed it aside, near his shirt, and immediately proceeded to work on his jean’s fly. Yu stared at Yosuke’s hands as they unzipped himself, folding back each flap of his pants, and then pushing them down until his thighs were revealed and Yosuke was left exposed in his black boxer briefs, his length clearly visible, jutting out beneath the fabric.
Yu swallowed.
Yosuke’s mouth stretched into a satisfied grin. “Like what you see, huh?” he whispered, just audible over their panting.
Yu thought he said “yeah” in reply, but maybe that had only happened in his head. These moments were always so fast between them, with so little planning or care, that watching Yosuke slowly undress himself was making Yu shake with expectation, with that dangerous urgency.
Yosuke came over him again, low enough to brush noses. “Oh, I’ve got a new trick I want to show you.”
“A trick?” Yu’s mind raced with what that could mean.
“Yeah, here.”
He raised himself back up, scooting down and grabbing Yu’s shirt on either side. As he pulled it up, Yu raised his arms to make way, but as the shirt came over his eyes, Yosuke let go.
“There we go,” he said. He sounded satisfied, which worried Yu.
Yu squirmed to get it off the rest of the way, but it was a bit difficult laying down, and that’s when he heard Yosuke laugh above him.
Yu grunted. “T-this is your trick?”
“Mmmaybe,” he drawled.
Yu scoffed. He had been halfway to a question, but it quickly died on his tongue as Yosuke’s intent quickly presented itself.
He realized, then, that he had a different sort of question to ask.
“… You want me blindfolded?”
There was a beat, in which Yu heard the mattress creak and felt Yosuke’s heat come over the top of him. The light behind his makeshift blindfold changed, dimmed as Yosuke blocked the early evening sunlight. Yu felt lips – full, yet featherlight against his own, a touch that had Yu reaching for more.
“We can take it off, if you want,” Yosuke said lowly.
Yu could feel Yosuke’s breath beating against his lips. He opened his mouth to it.
“I just … kinda wanted to try something.”
Yu tried to let that sink in. Yosuke was asking him for something he’d never asked for before, and Yu wanted to let the words drip through his mind slowly, one at a time, so that he could savor their meaning. He didn’t need to think about his answer; at this point, he would have cried if Yosuke had told him it was all just a joke. He couldn’t see, couldn’t use his arms. All he could do was breathe, and taste, and feel.
“Romantic …” Yu thought – or said, as it happened.
Yosuke laughed, nothing but a small puff of air against Yu’s skin. Then, he leaned down to kiss him.
Yu opened his mouth and begged for deep, for filling. Yosuke gave him half of that. He pulled away, their mouths still slick with an unfinished kiss, and already, Yu was testing the give in the shirt keeping his arms up and away from feeling Yosuke’s body. It was snug, but not so much that a few good tugs wouldn’t free him – and out of fear that it would if he kept at it, he quickly gave up.
Yosuke’s hair brushed his chest next, followed by the smooth, wet sensation of a tongue and a pair of lips trailing over his nipple. Yu gasped and arched into it, the hot flicking sensation over his sensitive skin. He said Yosuke’s name.
And Yosuke demonstrated his answer, all evening long, with more.
