Dante: A Life
Writing a biography of Dante Alighieri is not an easy task even for the most talented historians. In narrating the life of the great Florentine poet, universally considered the initiator of Italian literature, scholars often excessively focus on the literary perspective and miss, or deal only superficially, other crucial aspects that forged Alighieri’s personality, such as his family background, his political affiliation, and his ideology.
In his book, translated by Allan Cameron and originally published in Italian in 2021, the 700th anniversary of Alighieri’s death, Alessandro Barbero is able to avoid these risks by writing a compelling and accurate profile of il Sommo Poeta, or "The Supreme Poet," as how the Italians call Dante.

Inferno XXXIV, 133-139
Tumblr media
My guide and I came on that hidden road to make our way back into the bright world; and with no care for any rest, we climbed - he first, I following – until I saw, through a round opening, some of those things of beauty Heaven bears. It was from there that we emerged, to see – once more – the stars.

It’s really rainy & cold here, but I’ve been meaning to post this late #summerreading selection for awhile. Originally published in Italian in ‘73, this is the first English translation. I picked it up somewhat randomly before heading down to the shore in August. Perfect seasonal selection. Reminded me a lot of Bright Lights Big City, a favorite of mine, but sub in early ‘70s Rome for early ‘80s NYC. This protagonist is low on the totem pole at a newspaper, as opposed to McInerney’s who a fact checker at a thinly veiled New Yorker mag. Both young men are living outside their means as they carouse with folks from the upper/upper middle class. You could see many of these people eventually aging up into the characters portrayed in Sorrento’s film of 2010s Rome, The Great Beauty. Also, the way these folks talk about Rome in this book is the same way people talk about NYC – same love/hate relationship. A lot of fun until the fun becomes tragic. #bookcoverdesign by Zak Tebbal. #italianliterature #reading #bookstagram #typography #graphicdesign (at Bedford-Stuyvesant) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjRKjHOLLM_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What is going on with the youngsters nowadays? What should we do to protective, conservative, so-considered outdated parents? Why should relationship between parents-children become something problematic? Ah, that is what Serra tells us in his book. Gli Sdraiati (the recumbent people/Couch Potato) portrays the complex relationship between the younger generation and their parents today. It is written sarcastically in a long monologue which will make you giggle because of the satire yet offer you a reflective moment to spotlight the problem delivered. The book is a light reading. It's a fun one with an interesting subject to deliver. However, after few pages, the monologue is getting to monotone for me. The author can just deliver the mockery in such deeper way yet what I have read was somehow just too superficial. The novel was adapted into a movie in 2017. The comedy-drama adaptation is starred by Claudio Bisio and is directed by Francesca Archibugi. The movie somehow is more interesting than the novel. Give it a go. #bookish #booklover #bookishindonesia #bookaholic #bookstagram #bookstagramindonesia #bibliophile #bookreview #bookreviewer #booknerd #bookaddict #bookblogger #bookaesthetic #bookenthusiast #descalibrary #descaslibrary #descanto #fictionbook #nonfiction #igreads #igbook #instaread #instabooks #literatureisliving #riotgrams #micheleserra #italianwriter #italianliterature #glisdraiati #descareading2022 (at Bangkok Thailand) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfBHkFHrkhx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A boy climbs up into a tree and stays there 🌳. The years pass by and the obstinacy turns into philosophy. The boy confronts pirates, gets a fearsome bandit into books, falls in love with a girl as stubborn and proud as himself, and witnesses political changes. All that being up in the trees 😧 The story flows G.G.Márquez style becoming a myth and ending accordingly, which I liked a lot 🙃. #instabooks #instabookstagram #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #whattoread #whattoreadnext #italianauthor #italianliterature #italocalvino #thebaroninthetrees #myth #europeanliterature #historicalfiction (at Tallinn, Estonia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CW0mhKdgmUr/?utm_medium=tumblr

Your arm in mine, I've descended a million stairs at least.
And now that you're not here, a void yawns at every step.
Even so our long journey was brief.
I'm still en route, with no further need
of reservations, connections, ruses,
the constant contempt of those who think reality
is what one sees.
I’ve descended millions of stairs giving you my arm,
not of course because four eyes see better.
I went downstairs with you because I knew
the only real eyes, however darkened,
belonged to you.
Eugenio Montale, Satura 1962-1970, Xenia
translated by William Arrowsmith
In memory of Drusilla Tanzi, Montale's wife.
Montale was an italian poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1975.

Today I started to study for my comparated literatures exam that I'll have in January.
We focused on modernism and 20's novels.
I found the whole course so interest and I'm in love with the subject and all the material I have to read even if the only fact that I have to study for exams makes me so anxious but here I am

Why participate in an Italian book club… specifically the Studentessa Matta's Book? Learn the reasons in a new post on the StudentessaMatta.com website, AND learn a few new Italian idioms. Join me this March 2023 in reading “Io non ho Paura” di Niccolo Ammaniti. Spots are still available. After 5 weeks you will have read a novel in Italian! You will be guided by Melissa, and have access to a thorough Reader's Guide that summarizes each chapter, proposes thoughtful questions written in Italian and English.
