Okay, ever since some of my favorite booktubers made posts like these many a year ago, I always wanted to make a book rec list like this because I still genuinely do like the Hogwarts Houses. Enjoy!

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov - only a ravenclaw could appreciation its complexity, so many literary references, stylistically immaculate, lots of room to debate its message and themes

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - my man makes a deal with the devil for eternal youth and beauty, everyone here is morally dubious, murder and orgies and philosophy

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn - exhausted woman does what she needs to do, female rage book, does some interesting things with pov, justified evil, amy dunne is insane and it's great

Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao - tired chinese woman does what she needs to do and kills men, very unhinged queen behavior, ambition and god complexes, pacific rim but in china

… You know I always kind of assumed Ozzie was under a binding demonic contract by Mammon or something (remember, Oz is “the weakest sin”) to make the Fizzbots. But maybe not because Oz did fight back eventually? Was he doing it because of blackmail about his relationship until he reached the breaking point? And was he taking the blackmail because he genuinely cared about his imag, or was it because he thought “oh fuck if we go public everyone’s gonna try kidnapping/murdering over fizzy (which is what exactly happened in Oops) because they know it’s a weakness and I am in hell?” I think a lot of these factors influence how I interpret the morality of this situation. No idea if the show will ever go into it though. Probably not.

Fizz keeps going back and forth in regards to sexuality. Like I guess he likes the Lust Ring and being a sex symbol at Ozzie’s because he feels safe there and is being sexual for/with his boyfriend. But even then you have creepy people yelling that they have four of him and that makes him visibly uncomfortable. When it’s packaged as a production I guess that makes him uncomfortable? But isn’t his whole thing like “he’s a sellout?” Or maybe it’d like there’s a difference between being a “sex symbol” like Marilyn Monroe and being a porn star with sexbots built of you. Maybe that’s what Viv was going for?

But it feels so unclear because I don’t think Fizz has a consistent personality. Like who is the real Fizz. Have we met the real Fizz? Is the “sexy” Fizz a mask? Is “uwu” Fizz a mask? Is “gremlin” Fizz a mask? He uses all three to please other people. Hell even kid Fizz and teen Fizz are two EVEN DIFFERENT personalities (granted people change a lot from childhood/teenage hears). My guy has been performing his entire life that he doesn’t know how to turn it “off.” I’d say he needs a therapist but I don’t think they exist in hell.

I did not mean to go on a tangent, you don’t have to publish my psychoanalysis of Fizzarolli if you’re too burnt out. I actually don’t care about any of the five main characters that much, the side characters are more interesting to me

God Viv…if that’s what was happening it makes me completely doubt Asmodeus’ ability to protect Fizz. Not to mention something I hate in fiction when a story tries to make someone’s trauma a “shared” trauma, when there’s absolutely no way Ozzie is as traumatised as Fizz is by all of this. It’s so so easy to make it go away by having Asmodeus do this mistake on purpose, then regret it deeply, aspire to change, and not hurt someone like that again. That’s character growth and moral greyness and as a demonic sin of lust makes complete sense.

Yeah I need to know what people mean by sellout, because doing things out of character for you in order to make money

^^^^ makes complete sense!!! Fizz isn’t a cruel overly raunchy person who prizes lust and money and elitism above all else. Especially the elitism part, Asmodeus is nice (to fizz) but he’s an elitist like mammon is. Fizz? It’s not him. But putting the blame of the lustful persona on mammon exclusively is laughable?? Have a backbone, writers, character consistency is more important than keeping the demon ship vanilla, marketable, wholesome. It sacrifices its ability to explore problems in a relationship by prioritisation a romance for audiences to say “awww” at. So instead of working through issues that are making a relationship bad, they instead gloss over them which in turn, ironically makes them bad. And god Fizz’s communication with Asmodeus is so poor and so steeped in lies and codependency that the more it goes unaddressed the more uncomfortable the “cute” moments feel.

No you’re right. Fizz as a baby, teen, and adult, on stage, off stage, they feel deeply different to each other and I struggle to follow. Like if the three of them were somehow in a room, I don’t know how the conversation would go.

one of my fave things abt mk is how hes come into his own, owning his powers and self even though self doubt. hes a lil people pleaser, but hes not, like, a little somft uwu boy and he gives people many chances because he actively chooses to, and thinks they deserve them, but once its become too much hes happy to tell people thats e-fucking-nough as much as the censors will allow

fave thing for mei is probably her self confidence and aesthetic, she falters for sure but she has this fucking feral energy i adore and i hope nothing tames that, i dont care about how character growth is usually portrayed, you can be capable and not have to dim your fire. i understand the stuff with calming down to do the training at the end of s4 but she was also the only one with enough guts to tell him to fuck off. she got no stars but she was also the one to kick azure deadass in the face and steal swk (their trump card) back and if she hadnt, they might not have got swk back at all

fave thing abt swk is his tits his vibes. i actually like a lot abt swk fr, i like that hes a funny little guy, but you can still see bits of a more dangerous god under there, who can make the hard decisions noone wants to make because SOMEONE has to do it. hes a person with very firm convictions, even when he knows theyll get him a lot of hate. was he gonna kill the host? maybe, in hindsight its easy to say she didnt have to die, but realistically, one person vs the entire earth is a no brainer choice that noone else would have wanted to make

unpopular opinion and possibly hypocritical but i dont want canon maq to be too soft. stay a bastard. stay jagged. tbh im not sad over younger shadowpeach, and i know im a mean fucker but just in fiction, purely soft sweet relationships are pretty boring to me and i dont want that back at all. i want them to heal a little, tolerate each other, but i dont want maq to suddenly be sweet and sorry for everything. i got faith in lmk to not ruin his character tho.

also i liked his s3 outfit WAY better than his current one

her act 3 confrontation with vlaakith is SO GOOD and idk how anybody can see that scene and not immediately want to hug her. "she means to turn her back on vlaakith forever" "i have given you too much and you have given me too little" CHARACTER FUCKING GROWTH. i know everyone uwus about Astarion's character growth and like sure, it's fine, but LAE'ZEL??? dont harp on her for being Mean Lady (when she isnt even that mean in the first place) when its soooo fucking easy to watch her evolve and change as a person.

also her romance route is fucking cute and seeing her expression when she says "i want you to protect me and for me to protect you" makes me fucking c r a z y

J-just saw a youtube comment comparing wendy martin and tony stark by saying their character arcs are the same like ???

tony stark's arc begins with him being an arrogant bajillionare genius that sleeps around and runs the company his father started from the ground up. his eyes are forcibly opened to the horrors of said company's products and is held captive and tortured by terrorists and after freeing himself of captivity through his own genius and ingenuity he ends weapons productions and promptly begins trying to right the wrongs he himself is not culpable of and finds out that a man he trusted was responsible for the illegal selling of his weapons to terrorists and puts his life on the line to stop stane (orders pepper to overcharge the reactor to kill stane even when he was in its line of fire). tony's arc is about self-growth and change and responsibility and accountability. In IM2 tony's a bit more reckless than usual because oh, yeah, he's actively dying :))))) do you know what heavy metal poisoning does to a person?

to name a few symptoms/effects. No wonder the guy was all over the place.

Wendy, however, begins her arc in the mcu as a WILLING HYDRA volunteer/agent that plots to kill tony stark for something he isn't guilty of. She mind rapes the avengers, triggers tony's ptsd, is at least 50% responsible for ultron's creation, sets the hulk on Johannesburg, plots to kill all the avengers and help ultron do so, and only backs out and changes sides when she goes into ultron’s mind (mind rape :)) and sees that his plan is GLOBAL ANNIHILATION and that includes her and her twin brother. she didn't change sides for altruistic reasons. It was self-preservation at its finest. She was a willing and eager nazi terrorist.

In CACW she accidently tosses a bomb into a building full of people and they die and/or are injured. At this time the avengers, of which she is a member, act as an unfettered, unsupervised (I'm team responsibility and accountability and oh, so is Tony) police force and so it's absolutely likely that, in real world situations, house arrest is the LEAST of wendy's problems. But she throws a tantrum and shoves vision through dozens of floors because "I can't control their fear, only my own" says the girl with the ability to mind rape people and bring up their worst fears :(((( poor bbby. At the Leipzig airport in Germany she tosses several cars at Tony, a baseline human under the suit, because "uwu u lockeded me in my woom u big meanie! :(" she then goes on, after endgame, to trap an entire town under her powers against their will (MIND RAPIST) because vision died and acts as though she's the victim and deserves sympathy??? No??? And let's not get started on her arc in Multiverse of Madness because BITCH IS CRAZY AND UNHINGED AND I hate her bye

My point is this:

tony stark is constantly trying to better himself in each movie he's in. Is he perfect? No, but at least he actively tries and does better himself.

Wanda is the same mind raping nazi HYDRA scum bitch she's always been in the mcu and she hasn't tried to better herself other than call herself a hero and offer empty apologies :)

My opinion on the fell Poth / Poth stans. [½]

[trigger warning!!: pedophilia, my own opinion.]

Btw if you don’t like this don’t read because this isn't a place supporting these ships, no one's making you read this, or anything so please fuck off if you just going to just bitch.

For this blog, I'll be discussing the ship Poth. Of course, you can ship it but don’t make it weird.

By weird I mean by nekophys idea around the ship, which is just disgustingly weird, by that I mean.

When nekophy made goths design childlike, their excuse of this was because goths parents were geno and death and that means goth doesn’t age physically, even when nekophy says goth was 20 the character looked like a toddler. They could have easily made him look his age and only stopped at 20, not to mention that raven [aka goths brother] somehow doesn’t age physically like his brother and look his age.

between the art of palette and goth it made it out to look like a pedophilic ship. Which some of stans from Poth supported the idea. [also being that half of Neko Phys fans were children which this creator basically broadcasted this adult-child relationship.]

The fandom is far worse though, the fandom has either over sexualized the two Indvidual's or making them very awkward and out of canon, the Poth ship was felt more forced than anything. There was no character growth between them or having it feel like there was any love in it.

Of course the friends to lovers trope isn't bad at all, unless you know how to do it right, the dynamic ship between palette and goth was just dreadful and at times annoying, at times during these interactions it felt like palette wasn’t INTRESTED in goth like goth had feelings for palette- it seemed so one sided even if you switched the roles. though still the fandom still starts to force these two together just because they were ‘cute’ which is an idiotic reason, and plus makes no sense if you ship two fictional characters because they’re cute or seem like good friends.

Not to mention how out of character the characters were, and how they made palette this big Zaddy alpha and goth a softie uwu little omega needing protection all time, it was so uncomfortable and mind draining that makes the ship very toxic in a way, it makes it feel like it's just two other people and not the original characters.

I get in every fandom there will be bad stans but that doesn’t excuse half the shit they did and traumatized some minors while doing it and shows them that some of the dynamics between these ships are considered ‘okay’ just because it was drawn cute.

Some of Poth stans are just toxic in general, they don’t care for plot or morals only that they get their ‘omg so cute gay softie stuff!’ which a horrible mind set and for another failure ship I'll be discussing and the 2nd part in this which is about fell Poth and might be a little longer, but back to topic.

This mentality must stop cause it's just sickening at this point how long this ship has grown and not in a good way at all, also being that the two characters can't love someone else but that certain character, its normal to ship a character with someone ese who you think is compatible for each other.

But of course, there's those type of people who think their entitled to others ships and say that character you're shipping with a different character with is wrong just because they aren't with their character, they think is better, for an example ill show a demonstration here with person A and person B.

Person A: “oh wow! I like these two characters together better; I like their dynamic better.”

Person B: “you can't do that!”

Person A: “why?”

Person B: “because I don’t like that ship dynamic and mine is better and yours is poopy and dumb >: {“

Do you see what I mean here?

You of course could have your opinions and all, but you shouldn’t force or attack someone else for not having the same opinion as you.

And that’s another thing from fandom! They are very quick to judge someone or something if it doesn’t match their ideal of a certain subject.

Not to mention goth after these past YEARS hasn’t got any lore or growth from nekophy, he was just left at a dust shelf and let her fanbase do what they please with goth even if it morally wrong, I think nekophy should just give up on ownership of goth already by how little care their character is receiving or attention.

And by that, I mean to someone who will have head canons and lore for goth and have him be not so robotic.

But of course, you may have your opinions on this matter. I'd love to read about it in the comments from your perspective.

a long overdue update on exes, parasocial relationships and reclamation of my online space.

This month I will be turning 25.

I feel like it’s a age I genuinely didn’t think I’d make it to for a long time.

In retrospect, this blog has given me so much I can’t imagine a life in which I didn’t have it. The connections I fostered with people online when I was 16 on this blog have had such an impact on me. So many of my closest friends I met through this silly little ChubbyPixel blog. It and the handle have served me well.

However its time for a change.

I started this blog as a video game/video game YouTuber appreciation blog. In the same vein as game/grumps, normal/boots, and hidden/block. At the time there was a larger tumblr user in the same fan space as me who I was in a relationship with. A big reason we did get in a relationship was people “shipping” us together and saying uwu i ship it, yall would be so cute, etc etc. We were both underage, me being younger by a few yrs. This was extremely damaging to my overall mental health and perception of myself in a online space.

Like we weren’t even an adults or famous, we were just two popular blogs in a fan space, her way more than me but still. We were real people being seen as fictional characters to “ship”.

If I am completely honest if there’s any relationship I regret more in the world it would be this one. My ex, archer, truly deeply and sincerely was the worse thing to happen to me. This relationship was extremely toxic, one in which her friends would scream the N-word at me, emotional abuse, stalking, harassment, body shaming, I honestly could go on; But for my mental well being I rather not discuss it all.

For years as an victim of abusive gaslighting, I literally kept everything with the intention of sharing it all to “prove” that I was abused. However, I now come to realize I have nothing to prove to anyone when it come to my abuse story and how it effected me. I know, my therapist knows, and my partner knows and that’s good enough for me to put it away and begin to heal.

The stalking and harassment is the main reason I abandoned my blog; being that for *YEARS* after we had broken up I would get messages from her saying that I was nothing without her and that I would never be happy with anyone else. Not to say I was perfect either, I was also a dumb teenager and I definitely did some petty stuff like the whole “try to warn the exs new partner so they wouldn’t fall victim” thing as well- which went about as well as you would expect.

Intertwined in this were experiences with some adults who frankly preyed upon me as a underage inexperienced queer person to exploit me.

In 2019, however, is whenever it really got bad, as it probably was for many of you. As well as facing pandemic, loosing my mobility, and facing eviction, I was sexually assaulted by someone who I considered a very close friend who I knew for years at this point. This kinda broke my brain and I closed off from the world even more. The internet and tumblr were so stressful for me to look at, I was always just waiting for people to come back to harass me.

But I decided to take an extended break and gather myself. It’s taken years and alot of support from my amazing friends but I’m finally in a safe and somewhat stable place to where I want to reclaim my digital identity and persona.

I will be finally changing my blog name: Chubby/Pixel will be Pixel/renaissance in honor of my new era of growth and enlightenment as an artist and digital human.

I think a big problem is that sometimes we refuse to acknowledge our favorite characters are flawed and yet thats why we love them. Real people are flawed. Thats what makes the characters realistic and multi-dimensional and thats why we love them. This is much longer than i anticipated lol

Eddie can be a real asshole, on purpose, and kind of intimidating. Yes he has a heart of gold but that doesnt change the fact that he is not an uwu sweetiepie to everyone he comes across from moment one. Thats what makes his interactions with chrissy and dustin (and even steve, to an extent) so meaningful - bc he simply Is Not Like That with anyone else. Its a layer to his personality that he doesnt not easily share. Yet hes also genuinely snarky and sarcastic and kind of a dick, and a coward, too. He runs from danger and puts other people at risk/in danger/hurts other people because of it. Sure its justified at times but it doesnt change the fact that being mean and a coward is a character flaw. It doesnt make him a bad person. It makes him realistic.

Chrissy doesnt like being vulnerable. Shes self destructive. She doesnt open up to her friends or family or her boyfriend that loves her. Shes walled off and lies to them and tells them everything is fine. She would rather dissociate/do drugs than try to solve her problems. It doesn't make her a bad person. It makes her realistic.

Flaws dont mean "a thing that ruins this character" or "a thing we should hate about this character" or "a thing that makes this character a bad person" or anything like that. Flaws means "a thing that makes this character imperfect" and "a thing that the character needs to change in order to show growth and character development." We can all agree steve is flawed - he was a dick in high school. But he changed, stopped being a dick, and he acknowledges that he has been working on himself to become a better person when he tells nancy hes still in love with her. A redemption arc = a character overcoming their shortcomings and genuinely changing for the better.

Eddie is a coward. He hurts other people with his cowardice. Yes given the fact that he is wanted for murder its understandable that he would run, but it doesnt change the fact that his cowardice hurts orher people.

Chrissy was murdered in his trailer. He chose to run rather than call the cops - and had he called the cops, yes he would have likely been arrested, but then he wouldnt have been held responsible for freds death bc he likely would have been in custody when fred was murdered, and he probably wouldnt have been blamed for patricks death either since they wouldnt have been hunting him and therefore wouldnt have been around him when patrick was murdered. But instead, he ran, and left Wayne - who loved him more than anything and likely saved him from a horrible childhood and raised him as his own - to find Chrissy's horrifyingly tortured body.

Eddie ran, and therefore put The Party in danger of aiding/abetting "a criminal" and they could have been arrested for that. He indirectly caused their parents distress too.

Thats why eddie bravely playing to distract the bats, and then bravely charging headfirst ALONE into the swarm of bats is his redemption. Had he refused to play to distract the bats (like a coward) he probably would have prevented The Party from being able to kill Vecna. Had he ran from the bats and went into the real world to save himself (like a coward) the bats either would have gotten into the real world, or they would have doubled back and killed steve/robin/nancy.

So he played loudly to distract the bats and explicitly stated that he did it to avenge Chrissy as well as to protect steve/robin/nancy so they could kill Vecna - growth from how he left her to rot and for Wayne to find her, and growth from how he continually put The Party in danger by running. He cut the sheets in an attempt to protect dustin and tried to lure the bats away to protect steve/robin/nancy - same thing, growth from how he continually put The Party in danger by running. He stopped running and so he stopped hurting other people with his cowardice. Even though he knew it would be putting his life in danger.

And then he told dustin he loved him - growth from his assholery. Even (semi backhandedly lol) complimenting steve and (begrudgingly lol) acknowledging that steve is not the person Eddie thought steve was is growth too. Avenging chrissy was also a little bit of growth like this too, altho obviously not to the same degree bc he was open and vulnerable and kind to her almost from the get-go, but he was apologizing for not trying to help her w her problems and instead try to make money off her bc it was easier.

Chrissy didnt get a chance at a redemption arc, but the fact that it seems like everyones headcanon is that had she lived, she would have been able to open up and overcome her self loathing and self destruction. Shes not a bad person for being mentally ill and a victim of abuse. But character growth mandates that she would have addressed her problems and worked on herself bc refusal to address her problems rather than really truly ask for help - bc obviously she wasnt rly opening up to mrs kelly - and do the scary, difficult, emotionally draining work.

Idk. Character flaws are good. All the other characters on the show have flaws - its what makes them interesting and multidimensional and realistic. They arent bad people for being flawed. They arent villains for being flawed. And handwaving them away is doing them a disservice imo.

OK SO. FIRST OF ALL IM SO SORRY ITS NOT REAL. YOU CANT WATCH IT. :(((( It's a dnd campaign we played with our wife. SOMEDAY we might make it a show. Depending on how things go. BUT.

The Radiant Sun is the name of a D&D party in a home game we did. It consists of 6 people (as well as 40+ npcs) who are all batshit insane.

PARTY MEMBERS:

- Razor. The "main character" if a DnD campaign has one. Tiefling sorcerer who finds out later that he is secretly a member of the royal family and has special magic powers. MORE ON THAT LATER.

- Verona. Razor's bf who grew up as a captive in the same thieves' guild he was a captive in. They were friends since they were kids. She activated her own sorcerer magic (Divine Soul) and healed him when he got fucked up and tortured. She dies at one point early in the game and it is a catalyst for some Character Growth.

- Alixa. Batshit crazy 15yr old drow who was a custom homebrew class (knife artist, think rogue aesthetic but the whole point is doing cool shit w daggers). One of the central Problems in the world the campaign is set in is that there is a massive attempt by high elves to colonize the Underdark. She is the only survivor of her family who was killed/driven out. THIS WAR IS IMPORTANT BUT NOT FOR THE REASONS YOU THINK. Also she gets a giant pet lizard that can breathe fire. His name is Sparky.

- Avaciel. Former high elf noble who was cast out of her home city after it was taken over by Drow that wanted to find footing in noble cities to make the monarchy pay for the war/colonization effort. Became a bard who plays the violin like a badass.

- Shade. Shade is a demigod of The Shadow, one of the dark six in some dnd related pantheon that I don't remember the name of. She was created by that asshole as a failsafe measure in case her "dad" was ever slain by other gods, he set up his soul and powers to transfer into her body and planned to possess her and use her for his own purposes. She meets a demigod of another one of the dark six and eventually finds out that NEITHER of them are actually the kids of their "parents" they're actually kids of a DIFFERENT god and they're twins <3

- Aiyise. Personality and backstory wise a Straight Rip from another campaign we did but we wanted to fuck around with her so we gave her some totally different plot stuff and made her a cleric instead of a divine soul sorcerer. From a noble family who she believes to be great people until she gets un-modify-memory'd and finds out that they were actually horrible to her for her whole life and before she went out to adventure they wiped her brain. She is the tankiest motherfucker EVER. She's also the most uwu soft girl you will Ever meet.

PLOT STUFF.

Originally the party is called together by the Chamberlain of House Satra. House Satra is the ruling family over the continent the story takes place in. One of their daughters, Kyria, has gone missing! Oh No!! Party is told that several groups of adventurers have gone to find her and have all gone missing. They're a last ditch effort.

Notably. These kids are like 17 at oldest. Except for Shade who is weird and Avaciel who is like 23.

They do it anyway bc they are BROKE AS FUCK!!!!! And are promised lots of shiny money. And thus their adventures begin. They find Kyria, adopt her into the party, meet her "dad" (the "king" who is actually super super trans), are rewarded, and then are asked by the queen to go investigate a city that her brother is being held in for crimes she knows he didn't commit. Political bullshit. Whatever. These kids are incredibly hyped bc since all the official adventurers super died they have been appointed the Interim Defenders Of Toris TM. They feel all special. So they go.

While they are on the way, they are attacked by a Solar, a high angel of the Shadow who has been sent to retrieve Shade. Shade is not there when this happens so naturally the party, who have all known each other for like A Week, tell the solar that she's not there and they won't tell him where she is. So he tries to kill them all! And ends up killing Verona. Which makes Razor, understandably bc she is his not-quite-gf-but-hes-in-love-with-her, BIG MAD. They kill this asshole (Alixa is doing some insane called-shot/homebrew rules bullshit) and find out that these angels (because they are CR TWENTY ONE. AND RHE PARTY IS LEVEL FOUR.) are super powerful and drop super rare items. Including resurrection materials! So they continue their quest to their destination knowing that it's a big city and clerics can maybe help.

Other stuff happens in the interim BUT!

While they are in Faultline (the city) they find out Lots Of Insane Shit. Most notably, they find out that these things called the Draconic Eternals, basically giant ancient dragons that were sealed in a demiplane thousands of years ago, are still alive and trying to break out!!! They find out that there's a guy in the city who framed the queen's brother for killing a revolutionary who was actually his girlfriend so that he could get power over the city. The party subsequently kicks his ass and leaves the power in the hands of the revolutionary (who is not dead!!!) and her sister. Mostly her sister tho. Bc the revolutionary is busy kissing her fiance.

They go back and there's a big dance thing and Verona and Razor and Kyria see the "king" sneaking off somewhere with the chamberlain and decide to investigate. They follow them to a secret chamber and have the most insane series of stealth check rolls EVER and find out that. Uh. The king is working with the dragons. And killed his son, the prince, in order to help them break out. Because his son, you see, has this thing called the Soulscar. It's basically raw magic but super upgraded and powerful. And the only other person alive in the family line with the soulscar is mia and presumed never to return, and the soulscar is the only thing that could keep the dragons from coming back, sooooo they kill the kid! Kyria, notably, is Fucked Up about this bc that was Her Twin Brother.

You see where this is going from my character descriptions.

ANYWAY. After that horrible revelation they go back downstairs only to find that the oldest child of the royal family accidentally got Wish spelled into being like 16 and it can't be undone so she can't really be elected the next replacement for the king like the whole country was planning to do bc. Yknow. War Effort. And ALSO Avaciel's city's destroyer family is here. Or at least their son who she was supposed to marry is. And they are both super upset abt it!!! Because he's the only reason she's alive!!!! So Why Is He Here!!!!!!!

Their next quest is to go reclaim Avaciel's home city. Which they do. And then they go back to the main city.

And they play a game. With all their collected npc friends. Kind of like an icebreaker game. It's a staple of our campaigns tbh.

In that game, one of Razor's friends/the guy who watched over him and Verona at the thieves' guild, Hawke (who is also super a trans woman), is invited to play. And through a series of increasingly convoluted questions and a use of the Divination spell cast by Aiyise in order to find out what happened to Kyria's brother that was supposed to have died..... The Truth Comes Out. Razor is that kid. He was not killed. The king and his brother, the other person with the soulscar, created a plan that faked his death and saved his life but made him unfindable and hid him somewhere no one would ever look. And Hawke!!!! Is that "brother"!!!! And worked at the thieves' guild the whole time to take care of him!!!!!! AAAGHGHGH. Our entire party went INSANE when this was happening. It was crazy. So much shit made sense after that.

So Razor, now knowing everything, is taken to properly meet his family. He meets his actual parents in the context of being their kid. He finds out that they've saved presents for him for every birthday, memoirs, letters written to him etc in case he ever got to come home. Lots of tears etc.

And the "king" tells them about the dragon thing.

It turns out the draconic eternals have held blackmail over his head for like 3 decades. Just before the family's oldest kid was born they contacted him from their demiplane and said "if you do what we tell you we will wait until your family has died naturally before we descend upon your world and kill everybody. Otherwise we're doing it in like a decade lmao" and he, convinced he could find another solution with enough time, agreed to do what they said. And then they made him "kill" Razor (birth name Kyus) and he faked his son's death bc he couldn't make himself do it. He started the war at the dragons' bidding because he needed time to find a way to save the Entire World. And he didn't have that time without doing some genuinely horrible things. So he did them, and accepted that the world would hate him for it. Because he was protecting them from something much worse.

Then the "king" who I am now going to refer to as the queen bc she's trans and I feel bad decides that she is going to go against them. She can't do it anymore. So she arranges for a royal announcement to be made. She is gonna tell everyone about her son, about the dragons, about everything, and they will go from there.

Razor has known his family for like a day and a half btw. And he's about to be presented as a prince. And he doesn't want to go back to looking like he's "supposed" to. Which his family is fine with!!! But the kingdom maybe will not be. He doesn't do it anyway tho.

During that speech, the capital city is sieged by an assortment of "undesirable" races (orcs, drow, goblins, giants, etc) led by a tiefling who is so so so mad at the royal family and doesn't care what their excuse is. Uh oh! Razor recognizes him!! He knew him from the thieves' guild!

That's not important right now. What IS important is that he magically turns Razor's entire new family to stone and then drags them through a portal to God Knows Where. And Leaves.

And Razor jumps through after him. No time for the rest of the party to go.

He chases the guy with every ounce of his magic through an entire giant stronghold. And eventually he escapes. And Razor is So Mad.

He goes through an Arc Of Growth tm where he meets the giants' main god and is given a magical item that he will need to seal away the draconic eternals. There are 7 of those. The party already knows about one??? I think??? I deadass don't remember the timeframe on this. But they need to find all of them.

(Also at some point they find out one of the dragons didn't actually get sealed away bc he betrayed the other ones and he agrees to help them but that was an in between thing)

ANYWAY. Eventually Razor is reunited with the party and they go deal with All Of Those Guys' Bases. At one point in that whole thing Alixa finds out that she was chosen by one of the drow gods (NOT lolth) to be her champion and gets given a few bits of paladin magic as a treat. And also one of the important magic items!!!

They eventually stop all the guys and talk their leader down bc Razor and him used to be Buddies tm. And they get him to stop being Insane. And fix his family. And his family is back!!! But when they get back to the capital city they have to deal with the fact that the thieves' guild has taken over bc nobody was there to stop them. And Razor and Verona have TRAUMA tm around those guys. Esp Razor bc their leader tortured him because he knew something about Razor's magic (could see the soulscar via true sight) but Razor didn't know at the time so he just got beat up a bunch.

They fight them!! And win!!! Eventually!!!!!! And the city is (mostly) restored.

The party has a lot of stuff to do. At varying points, they are required to stop THREE separate apocalypses. An apocalypse based on the ancient elemental beings that a cult led by people including Aiyise's fucked up family are trying to resurrect almost happens but some of the party and friends (including Aiyise and her two besties from childhood) stop it. That arc includes a genius 15 year old basically inventing unsterilized open heart surgery on top of a mountain to save the kids of the crazy cleansing cult guys bc they had magical chips inserted into their hearts that had to be destroyed before they could kill the cultists. Necessity my beloved. <3

Eventually the Final Battle comes. The party fights its way through each Draconic Eternal in groups, boosted by the power of like 4 different gods. At the same time, 4/6 members of the Dark Six god group are trying to end the world in a different separate way than the dragons. So they have to fight 4 gods and like 12 fucked up evil dragons that are like ancient dragons dialed up to 15. But they have crazy magic items and are level 20 and have the blessing of, again, like 4 different gods. So they do it.

Holy shit. It's done. The Radiant Sun has just collectively stopped a triple apocalypse. Razor gets to be with his family, Verona gets to marry her bf, Avaciel goes home and rules over her city, Aiyise and her partners start patching up the damage done to their religion by training a new not crazy generation of clerics and paladins, Alixa gets to work as Eilistraee's champion, and Shade and her twin brother take over the roles of The Shadow and The Fury, their "parents" who aren't actually their parents. So they are gods now.

Everybody lives happily ever after.

For now...?

I'm sure there's a million other things to say abt them and I did NOT give the full details of every quest bc this was meant to be the overarching plot line so if you wanna hear anything abt specific people's personal arcs or anything I will answer all your questions ever. There is a chance that someday this post will be deleted off the internet because maybe this will be an Actual Animated Series someday and yknow. I dont want my whole plot online for everyone to see. But who knows!

ok whatever im gonna ramble about that stupid disco elysium take

what shocks me, truly, is that all these wholesome witchcore uwu beans should really... like what DE discusses. what i got from the game was a story about change, growth, choosing to be better even when it's hard. it's a game about discovering (or rediscovering) the cruelty of the world around you and choosing to act in opposition to it. it's a game about how our past doesn't have to dictate our future. it's a game about the world that is possible if we believe in it and act on those beliefs. all these narrative foci would be right at home in some wholesome story about witches, but the difference is that the wholesome story jumps straight to the conclusion - DE doesn't. in DE, you have to do the work.

this, i think, is what gets the wholesome-brained to shut down. they love the witchcore stuff because it's pure escapism. i can't really fault people for wanting to get away from the grim reality we find ourselves in, but too much escapism gets you to a point where you forget some critical points about our world. the escapism doesn't change anything about the world - it keeps getting worse as you distract yourself. eventually it might get to be so bad that you can stand it less and less, and you try to escape more and more. before you know it, you're looking at the world through the lens of what you escaped to, and you become upset when it isn't (and can't be) as tidy. this is how we get people with extremely rigid morals obsessed with purity/wholesomeness.

oddly enough, this is basically what happened to harry. he couldn't handle what he was dealing with and fell headfirst into addiction to escape his pain. but every time he sobered up, he would have to face reality yet again. it got to be too much and he drank himself into nearly total oblivion. this didn't fix anything, though, as he still had to face reality but with none of his previous knowledge. this is why he can react with shock and horror to things people tell him are a part of daily life. like, "sorry that this is the first you're hearing about this, but we've been dealing with it every day of our lives."

and, yknow, this probably wont be news to anyone who's reading this, but DE is one of many victims of a sanitization that all RPGs with sizeable reach end up going through. the actual story, the actual content, is glossed over for the possibility of using it as a loose AU framing/projection for your own thoughts. it's best exemplified by all the fanart that pushes the focus as being "funny game where the two main characters are gay 😳" and stopping there. or worse yet, they view the game as a delivery system for funny jokes and other stuff on the side. it's almost a conscious refusal to listen to what the game is talking about. this, too, is escapism. the thing from which the audience member is escaping is a serious exploration of serious topics. that isn't as fun as saying "i want to have fuck with you." that isn't as fun as using harry and kim as dolls you push together saying "now kiss." that isn't as fun as going around screaming about the end of the world to everyone after you pop back three different pills.

ultimately, i just think it's interesting how the refusal to engage with DE on its own terms is itself similar to the core issue harry faces. it's really a testament to the greatness of the writing, similar to how the changes ZA/UM has gone through are echoes of discussions the game had. it sucks that we see these parallels with stupid bullshit though, as opposed to, like, the revolutionary politics.

side note: i'd almost be interested in this hypothetical wholesome witchcore DE-style game if the scope expanded beyond that and the wholesome nature turned out to be something only the upper class gets to live with, and our wholesome witch has to grapple with the fact that her comfortable living is only possible due to unspeakable amounts of exploitation and abuse of lower classes. they'd never make that game, though. but a girl can dream.

So, FFXIVwrite2023, huh?

About that... I said I'd be happy with 10 entries, so I just stopped there. Quite possibly because I started Baldur's Gate 3, but that's just a small piece of the problem. The main piece is that... I'm not enjoying FFXIV all that much anymore.

I decided to put this under a cut after I finished because it... mostly just turned into me complaining.

I have to be fully honest here. Endwalker really disappointed me from almost every angle. I love some of the characters and character growth moments (Alisaie's speech to Zenos, Jullus and the Garlemald arc come to mind,) and the environments and music are perfect and gorgeous as always. However, there are several buts, and they are stinky and hairy and flatulent buts indeed.

First of all, (and you probably saw this coming) my main class of 8 fucking years got gutted, and I can't seem to find another that I can both enjoy AND be good at. I play DNC now just because its easy and I can do it without burdening my party or unduly stressing myself out. Secondly, the story really lost me - the time travel, the continuing uwu-ification of the ancients/the world unsundered, the "just trust us!" style retcons, the fact that a single conversation could have solved everything on numerous occasions, whatever the fuck dynamis is... etc.

I digress a bit here though. The point is that I have played some absolutely phenomenal games since starting FFXIV (Baldur's Gate 3, Spiritfarer, Disco Elysium, Hades, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Forgotten City,) and they keep reminding me that I'm supposed to be having fun... all the time. And yes, I am aware that comparing a detective procedural to a platformer to a Roguelite to an MMO doesn't make any sense, but joy and engagement with a game are just that, no matter what genre.

I feel like I should add the caveat that I still have a lot of fun raiding/partying with my friends, but schedules and other obligations and timezones and whatnot (aka through no fault of my dear friends) mean I'm solo/pugging a good 85% of the time and not having fun so much as filling quotas. I'm not quitting as of now or anything, (at the very least since I walked right into SE's subscription trap by getting a house) but I think I'm gonna be pretty light on logging in for at least a little while.

Holy shit, I was supposed to be talking about FFXIVwrite but that all just poured out of me.

About that FFXIVwrite though - I met a modest goal, and this was probably my last FFXIVwrite unless Dawntrail really blows my mind. I do want to continue my project of getting all 100+ pieces of Fal writing strung into a single story on my Ao3 . (Actually, the main reason I haven't done anything with it lately is because I was expecting to get more done with FFXIVwrite2023 to fill in some blanks before I posted everything else.) As for why I want to continue... I just really love my FFXIV son.

For the nonnie that was curious about why I don’t like Bernadetta (Marianne will be in another post because this one is pretty long):

I actually suffer from the exact same condition she does and have been diagnosed for agoraphobia. Unfortunately it turns out IS does in fact not know how to write people who are afraid to leave their rooms/houses and makes it seem like we just can't so much as have a conversation with people in person or have to do so from behind a door. People like me can leave our rooms and go out and shit - it's just extremely anxiety ridden.

My biggest issue with Bernadetta is that she's played explicitly for laughs and there's little to no actual tackling of her issues. She screams and runs off because lol funnies, but she also never listens to what anyone says to her and immediately starts insulting herself while ignoring the entire conversation. The thing is, if she were real, I wouldn't even be able to tell her she's wrong about herself because no, she's the most annoying thing on the planet and I found myself agreeing with EdeIgard in their C and B supports when EdeIgard was basically like ffs woman just stfu and actually listen to the conversation instead of making up what's happening.

The whole screaming and running away constantly would need to be removed completely for me to even consider the rest of her character (which is also pretty bland, but when she actually learns how to hold a conversation she's somewhat tolerable). No amount of "oh no Bernie now everyone hates you" is gonna make me like her. In fact, it's true I do hate her because she constantly puts herself down in that specific way, and well... when people do that irl, it's literal manipulation. People want you to say the opposite of the bad things. If that were me, I'd immediately just say yeah, you know what, everyone does hate you because you say shit like that constantly and can't hold a single conversation because uwu your dad was mean to you.

I didn't have the best relationship with my own dad some years ago, and sometimes it was really bad. Neither of us could even hold a conversation because whenever he said anything to me it was some jab at me, and that was during severe mental illness for me. He's learning how mental illness works now, but my relationship with him and somewhat my mom, like Bernadetta, wasn't really good. We were extremely dysfunctional. That didn't make me hide away from every single conversation from all other people though, and her entire character is excessive and beyond unrealistic. Part of it is also the whole "oh no me and my dad had a bad relationship, now I'm going to scream and run away from everyone ever except the avatar character so people can self insert their love for me". zzzzz i sleep

In my opinion too, as someone who suffers from the exact same mental illness, it's actually pretty insulting. The only conversation I have any memory of being able to even remotely tolerate was her and Dorothea's B support. The thing is, she has a story... but it's completely overshadowed by idiocy and the writers being like "lol this must be what agoraphobia is like amirite".

She needs better development and a better delivery of what her story actually is. All her interactions, every single one, are exactly the same. Every. Single. One. Screams, runs away. Does so until the last support with the respective characters and has miniscule growth. Does not have any varied conversations and every single one takes the same outline and hurls back up the same exact thing that happened in the other support. Let me tell you, Fates was infamous for that and my feelings on its supports stand. Bernadetta was like super bad Fates writing on crack, and that's... uh... that's a new low for FE writing lol. Fates had bad writing to begin with.

I know it's also the fact that they took social anxiety and tried it to make it lol funnies bc lol ppl can relate, but like... people who genuinely have that very real issue do not behave like that and to me, it's not funny. It's not cute and "uwu I just want to protect her." It's just extremely annoying and irritating and in fact, I just want to slap her square in the face and tell her to never open her mouth again because HOOEE. There's a big difference between having a mental illness and being outright annoying to everyone you speak to, and having a mental illness doesn't excuse particular socially damaging (to others) behaviors.

Like... I hate her with a fiery hot burning passion when I actually think about the way they handled her in Houses. She's pretty barely above Edelgard in that sense.

As far as more on why I don’t like her, I did mention a lot of it in these posts which explained why the topic itself is so problematic in how it was written.

Hopes:

Regarding Hopes, they actually did remove some of that nonsense as far as the main story. She was quieter and could handle being out in the war (at least while having Ferdinand at her side which yes, that can be realistic! Having a friend with you when you have to go out and you're anxious to go out can really help). Her supports are still absolute trash and should be in the dumpster instead of all the useful things you can find dumpster diving in business' dumpsters, but the main story severely toned down the bullshit.

Her supports are still infuriating (besides with Marianne), but luckily she doesn't have as many in Hopes since supports were less of a feature in the game overall. They were better... somewhat... but not great. Her support with Marianne is essentially the character we should have gotten as her whole character when she associates with anyone at all, because just because she had a rocky relationship with her dad doesn't mean she should look at every single human being ever and fear the things she feared from her dad. What happened with her and her dad doesn't mean everyone is her dad and she should realistically know that. Even if she has a hard time coming out of her shell, she should still do that, slowly learning about people but quickly realizing, based on the amount of people she can meet in GM, that nobody is like her dad.

Ironically the C and B supports she had with EdeIgard were pretty much me letting my emotions out somewhat through EdeIgard lol.

Like you said, the writers handle Bernadetta like a joke character and tbh, I'm frankly disgusted by her popularity as someone who now has to acknowledge that the fandom at large treats my mental illness and anxiety as a lol funny joke. It's crippling and it's why I can barely function outside of my house, and it's certainly not something to laugh about when it causes struggles getting a job because most jobs are, and have been entirely until recently, jobs that you had to leave home to get to. Even online/office jobs were in a location outside of one's home. The fact that the fandom completely feeds into this joke writing means they enjoy it and have only proved the writers correct that anxiety is a joke worth laughing at if you struggle to leave your house.

The representation part of it:

In other words, when anxiety gets that bad, it can be played for laughs and people will enjoy it in media. The problem with that is exactly the same as older media concerns, like showing deeply autistic characters (ex. ones who have warped facial features due to their autism) and shaming them for "being ugly" or otherwise facially abnormal. Another example, media's habit of fat shaming and making fat characters to have them be a fat joke. Berandetta is exactly those things, just with another skin of socially abnormal and neurodivergent behavior being laughed at because it's not "socially normal or acceptable irl".

A perfect example would be unfortunately the Naruto series, that I grew up loving but recently looked back on and saw that a good chunk of it was nothing but cringe. There are literally fat jokes that are so bad in the sequel series, Boruto, that an overweight character literally insults herself with the fat jokes and it’s written to be humor. It's... bad. Bernadetta is literally that, possibly even in a more extreme way.

There’s also the fact that, like I mentioned in one of the linked posts, they give her the very strange interest of “weird plants”, as if to imply they believe shut ins are and do strange things that most people would gawk at, when no, we actually do normal things everyone else does.

I’ve been struggling with this anxiety in a severe way for over five straight years. It’s not funny and we don’t do unusual, abnormal things or have “weird” interests. We also don’t scream and run away from people trying to have a simple, friendly conversation with us. Her self depricating is also ridiculous and we don’t do that out in the open. People like myself tend to only speak to individuals we really trust about those insecurities. While we do have a hard time having any confidence, we don’t just blurt it out and scream it in front of someone mid-conversation. Like I said, people who do that irl are doing it for attention and to get compliments. Having her do that is a very bad look on people who actually have this illness.

Like, I know it seems like I’m making a Big Deal about it, but to me this is no different than people seeing fat jokes played for laughs, or having the token black character who is often the butt of jokes or even just there for the creator(s) to say “there’s a black character so you can’t say we didn’t do it”. It feels like it was just forced in because “it was the new trend online”.

The problem is that people actually ate it up and were happy with “representation”, even if that representation was actually insulting and extremely left field from what the representation is supposed to be like. When creators see incorrect interpretation being lauded as awesome and great, they won’t care if it was well done or not because it sold well and people expressed love for it. Those people not caring about how accurate the representation is is exactly the group of people who are hurting those of us who are trying to get others, and media, to understand that we don’t want that and yes, we want representation, but not for it to be so off par that it’s not even representing at all at that point.

Basically they made both a horribly annoying character and a total failure of a soecial anxiety representation. Like, I don’t even hate Micaiah to this extent and she used to be my most hated FE character until uwugard and Bernadetta happened.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

Hm... I mean... there are so many misconceptions that border on the intersectionality of Roxy being a woman of colour, asexual, and other aspects of her personality and character. To start, women often get typecasted as the caretaker, the love interest, the sexual conquest, or get assigned gross and shitty complexes because people don't like to think that there are more dimensions to women other than being good/bad, pure/corrupted, messy/pristine, etc.

Again, these complexes are what makes me resent writing a female character, not gonna lie! People see that Roxy, fundamentally, is a good person. She has upstanding morals, integrity, and she fights the good fight. And people have it in their heads that she is an "uwu sunshine pure vanilla bean baby" ( and I will say her being ace doesn't help because people tend to assign that pure, virginal presumption to asexuality, which is incredibly ignorant! ) but really, she is kind and sweet but it doesn't mean she doesn't have a spine. The girl can have a bit of a mean streak at times!

On the other hand, when Roxy exhibits her more competent and ruthless side, people are all like "OH YES STEP ON ME KILLER QUEEN, YES YOU COLD AND BLOODBATHED GODDESS." That also bothers me because it also doesn't capture the full dimension of Roxy being a fully realized character who is multifaceted and cannot be pigeonholed. She won't always be strong, decisive, or cold, and she won't always be soft, warm, or affable. To presume how she would act or behave is simply... a grave mistake.

AN IMPORTANT HEADCANON

In terms of the meta, Roxy is not your typical hero. Yes she fights the good fight but does so in very complicated ways that allow her to surf within that grey area. Nothing is ever black and white in her world. And thus, she is more of a culture hero ⏤ somebody who can change / recreate the world. As a categorized Good character, she often wildly swings between Lawful, Neutral, and Chaotic depending on whatever methods or approaches suit the situation. She abides by and breaks rules, she creates and destroys, she cleans and makes messes, etc. All in all, it's to ensure that balance is maintained and restored, and she doesn't even know how vital her role is.

A USELESS HEADCANON

One of the things that will bear no meaning or significance in plots, threads, etc. is that she likes putting gummy bears with her ice cream. I dunno why, it just makes him harder to chew but Roxy likes that??? Weirdo...

POTENTIAL TRIGGERS

I mean in terms of triggers, there might be written literal or metaphorical gore as I am noticing that viscera tends to make its way into my writing. Struggles with mental health is also present in a way in which trauma is dealt personally and how intergenerational trauma is a huge proponent in Roxy's story. Of course in spite of all the supernatural BS she has to deal with, she is still very much a person dealing with things the best she can. Some of these fantastical aspects sometimes could bleed very well into relatability in which some take comfort in or it can be too much. I don't go too heavy with triggers in my writing, but that being said, I could still very well write some trigger-heavy things without knowing because everybody has their own lived experiences and everybody's traumas manifest in different ways.

SOMETHING YOU ENJOY ABOUT (WRITING) THEM

I think it's the growth of Roxy's character, I've rped her since 2013 seeing her actually grow from a teenager to an adult. It's a journey along with that, so was writing and finding my own voice and style as an author.

Furthermore, I actually like writing a character who has multifaceted and very flexible because it keeps her dynamic. At this rate, she's become more than what I had her set out to be and it's a blast to see where she goes!

The only way I see Mei's characterization making sense is that she was codependent on Kiana but after having to accept that Kiana might be gone from her life, she became the cold and ruthless World Serpent Mei. And now she's "okay" again since reuniting with Kiana; not as murdery but still super detached from everything. The psychological damage has already been done.

Even if thats the case, I dont feel like it has been presented that way.

If it was that way, then Nagazora and World Serpent Mei is GROSSLY misscharacterized. Lets not forget that Mei did kick back and have a (non alcoholic) drink at Raven's bar. They drove in cars, chatted normally, Mei went and cried for someone she hasn't known for more than like half a month. If Mei was codependent on Kiana, then she certainly didn't act like it at World Serpent.

Like, even when she's not off murdering people off-mission orders, she got along with several people - way more than we ever saw while with Kiana.

So maybe Mei was codependent on Kiana, but then her World Serpent phase would have been her growing out of that dependency

Which brings us back to the problem that she goes right back to being depentent on Kiana once they are reunited again.

Its a reversal of character growth that isnt presented well because "owo uwu now shes reunited with her non-official girlfriend, see how happy they are now?"

the Mario Movie Post

ok SO heres a more expansive post listing my Thoughts on the mario movie. HUGE spoiler warning under the cut btw

it was....good! i keep comparing it to the sonic movies in my head bc thats what ive seen a lot of other ppl doing, and i think, compared to those movies, this one is a “safer” adaptation of the source material; and ofc this isnt an inherently good or bad thing, but it may influence ur opinion if u were expecting a more derivative adaptation like the sonic movies, which take more risks and creative liberties. id rank the mario movie below sonic 2 (the greatest movie of all time btw), but idk if id put it above or below sonic 1; ultimately, like i said, it depends on whether u prefer the adaptation thats “safer” or “riskier” in terms of what its trying to accomplish.

anyway, here r some things i rly liked abt the movie!! warning for me gushing abt bowser bc im in love with him btw ASDLJKADS

bowser is the greatest character in the entire thing ofc. not surprising at all ASLKJDSLKJDS my big beautiful monster husband he is SOOOO GOOOODDD like.....hes the most expressive, full of personality, and jack black gives an AMAZING performance as him. his fucking song???? the princess peach love song??? beautiful. lovely. i love bowser so fucking much......like yeah he “kidnaps people” and “tries to kill innocents” or whatever but errmmm he does it in the name of love so its ok uwu my big strong cuddly ferocious teddy bear i love him I LOVE HIIMMMMM KLASJDKLJASDLKJ HES SO PERFECT HES A SWEET LOVEY DOVEY DORK BUT HES ALSO FUCKED UP EVIL AND POWERFUL AND WILLING TO CRUSH ANYONE WHO STANDS IN HIS WAY GOOOODDDDD I WANT HIM SO BAD

animation is gorgeous, including the environments and character models. say what u want abt illumination but u have to admit their actual animation game is pretty damn good and this film is no exception

i rly appreciate all the references and easter eggs! i like how they used music from the games in various ways, and how they incorporated the different worlds/levels.

i LOVE the little additional bits of lore they added!!! ive been a huge Mario Lore Enthusiast pretty much since i first learned how to use the internet so this was very satisfying to my autistic brain ALSKJLKDASJ

as far as specific lore elements go, i loved getting to see mario and luigi’s parents (+ extended family!!!). u dont understand for the longest time the only CANON picture we had of mario and luigis parents were these images from the end of yoshis island ASKLDJSLAKDJ so im very happy we got more detailed designs for them

i love the backstory they gave princess peach!! ive always wondered why she rules the mushroom kingdom despite not being a toad. i hope they expand on her story more if they ever make a second movie bc i think it would be rly interesting to know more abt where she came from!!

i LOOOVE the kongs so so much......ty mario movie for finally ending the debate abt whether or not dk is cranky kongs son or grandson SALKJDALKSJ also i love dk’s characterization in this too, his friendly rivalry w mario was rly funny

i love love LOOOVVE the sibling dynamic between mario and luigi. Bro They Are Bros

i like the incorporation of the power-ups and how they work

king bob-omb is there. i like him :)

and now for some criticisms (note that these r all pretty minor, there wasnt rly anything i Disliked abt the movie which is admittedly more than i can say abt the first sonic movie actually LKSAJLKD):

a lot of the characters just kinda felt flat, especially compared to bowser who has the most personality. luigi is the only one i can think of who has any kind of significant “arc.” peach, toad, and dk dont rly have any kind of significant character growth, while mario’s arc is just kinda....He Learns To Get Better At Fighting And Navigating The Mushroom Kingdom i guess. to be fair mario games in general arent rly known for focusing on character development (w some exceptions like the rpgs, but none of that development is rly focused on mario himself), but that ultimately just made this movie’s writing pale in comparison to the sonic movies (which arent perfect (except for the second one) but still)

luigi didnt rly do much throughout the whole thing.....i liked him a lot in the beginning, but he spends most of the movie being captured. i DID like the fight scene at the end where mario and luigi team up to beat the shit out of bowser tho!! i just wish we got to spend a little more time with luigi so his arc had a more satisfying conclusion

Why didnt they credit grant kirkhope for the dk rap. wtf nintendo/illumination

but yeah those r my Thoughts. overall it was a pretty good movie, id maybe give it like....7/10? 7.5/10? it wasnt Great but it was good. definitely better than the Other mario movie thats for sure LKASJFLKJS
