I randomly thought about Crowley and the prologue right when I was about to fall asleep (as one typically does 🤪), when I remembered these lines from his ghost form in the prologue. “Don’t be shy about striking me, I’m much too kind to be riled over that.” I always thought this line was interesting. To an extent with Crowley, this has remained true. Even in his personal story, he lets the students take a few verbal jabs at him until he whips them up into shape. And here in the prologue, Grim and Yuu aren’t a threat to him whatsoever- this is more of an experiment to test Yuu’s “beast tamer” abilities. Still, this was always a line that i found strange- it’s not that he’s okay with it because it’s a lesson, but that he’s just too kind to be bothered by being striked.

But when I thought about Crowley’s personal story, the more it suddenly made sense to me. Of course, he’s too kind to be riled up by mere striking! Crowley treats Malleus’ thunderous anger from not being invited more like an inconvenience than serious trouble. Like someone mildly misbehaving or being too noisy- instead of a powerful mage casting actual thunder and lightning in an enclosed space! (*ﾟ▽ﾟ*) And Crowley could easily defend himself, as we see in the manga that Crowley can easily conjure up shields that are strong enough against an Overblot attack. In-game in his personal story does he also emphasis just how magically powerful he is as well. And yet he’s surprisingly tolerant about Malleus’ behavior.

Which my next train of thought led to Meleanor’s lightning. I’ve made the comparison between Crowley’s personal story and Meleanor’s lightning before, but I feel like the ghost line adds a bit more of substance to it! 🤔 Levan was said to be a kind person…which clearly meant something coming from both Lilia and Meleanor. He was also a diplomat in every sense of the word, preferring to resolve conflicts without immediately resorting to violence. So Crowley being so forgiving and so kind despite being striked…him just saying “oh, does that ever smart!” as a response to being directly hit with Grim’s fire…I feel like it fits well with Meleanor and Malleus! 🤣 I feel like even if Levan got hit by her lightning too, he would just brush it off a bit easier compared to the rest of the Briar Valley soldiers and General Lilia- but that’s just my thought (*ﾟ▽ﾟ*)

the thing about ian saying his vows is that he starts out so nervous..."i, ian..." trying to remember and stick to the script...

then, "take you..." you can see the giddiness starting...the familiarity of his man standing in front of him...a little smile...he's here for him...

then, "mickey" his man! his fiance! his husband, only seconds away! it couldn't be easier for him <3

every single time you drop in here to point something out, i want to run straight to your house screaming at full volume until i crash full force into a window.....

i mean, can we take a moment to imagine what might be going through ian's head right before he needs to recite his vows? just like the amount of rapid fire memories and concerns that could be happening within seconds?

a flip book playing at super speed! flying through those old chapters, some pages frayed and sticking together. burned...

the hardships they had to overcome to get here. the years of pain, solitude, and confusion. fighting so damn hard to be together, to survive, to just breathe. being in the closet, health issues, a marriage, a baby, jail, mexico! and also everything that happened just now! their venue burning, terry, debbie in a wedding dress! one thing after the other, flickering, zapping through his mind.

buzzing, humming, flashing...

until he grasps on to the one thing that's been keeping them afloat and alive. all encompassing, overwhelming, beautiful, magical, iridescent, loud, grounding.

he opens his mouth to say the words he's probably been dreaming of since he was a kid smitten with a boy during the summertime.

i, ian...

WHOOSH! calm.

the flip book closes. and he sees a new one opening up before him.

take you...

fresh clean page. yea. this is it, this is right. this has always been right.

mickey.

and mickey, he smiles back. mirrors that same giddy expression right back to ian. he feels it too, the new beginning. another volume to their story. a new book.
