Bon Dancing experience
While walking back home one evening, I noticed an Obon going on in a temple and decided to just stroll in and check things out. There were booths with various games and stands with so much delicious Japanese street food, it was really something special to see. Moreover, children, adults, and grandparents alike were adorned in Yukatas (traditional Japanese clothing). As I proceeded deeper into the temple, much to my surprise there was Bon Odori, which simply is traditional Obon Dancing. The song and dance that was playing was the “Tankobushi”, which ironically is my favorite Bon Odori dance and song. I know all the steps and movements by heart and perform this every single year with my family. Honestly, what were the chances of my favorite song being played at that exact moment. The whole experience made me feel nostalgic and a bit homesick. But, it also reminded me of how rich and deep the Japanese culture is. It’s amazing how in a small town in Japan the dance and song felt exactly the same as when I was growing up in Los Angeles. And that even though I was born and raised thousands of miles away from my home country I could still experience the Japanese lifestyle and culture through these rich cultural celebrations.
A bit of a dreary departure from Friday and Saturdays weather, but still fun none-the-less! This was our first Sakura Sunday and seeing the blossoms and live music was awesome! Great seeing all the friendos as well! - - - #sakura #sakurasunday #cherryblossom #cherryblossomfestival #japan #japanese #japanesculture #sushi #subaru #blossom #blossoms #philadelphia #philly (at Fairmount Park Philly Sakura Festival)
