Sou’s route won my over simply by having the option to tell Otori to shut the hell up. The guide says to chose the other one but fuck it. Best choice in the entire game, nothing can top, not accepting disagreements. Now there just needs to be one for the psycho duo in Amber and it really will be perfect.

self-indulgent headcanon time:
I headcanon that Furina has 2 dogs. their names are Philippe and Jeanne Marie, they're poodles and they're treated like doggy royalty.
Neuvillette gave her her first puppy hundreds of years ago and ever since then it's been absolutely vital to make sure she always has at least 1 dog in her care at all times. They're basically her emotional support animals and she probably couldn't go a single day without them unless you want to deal with the ensuing meltdown.
she'll take this secret to her grave, but the reason she loves dogs so much is because she never feels judged by them, or like they secretly think she's incompetent and a failure. they simply just love her for what she is.

Some more ideas for the P5/Bayonetta au while I work on some more art pieces, as well as a call for suggestions
While the Phantom Thieves have their signature weapons, I want Joker, Akechi, and Joker’s father (who will be revealed soon) to have their own 4-gun set
Unlike Jeanne, I want Akechi to have two gun sets, each one relating to one of his Personas
There’s Sherwood, with the individual names Much, Scarlet, Tuck, and Little John
And then there’s Ragnarok, which contains Hel, Jormungandr, Fenrir, and Sleipnir
I’m not sure about Joker though, should I give him Scarborough Fair, etc. or his own unique guns?
If the latter, what do I call them?
I also want each Phantom Thief to have their own Beast Within form, but what?
Some are obvious, like Yusuke is a fox. Maybe Haru could be a dog, specifically a poodle because of her curls? But the others are tricky.
I thought of making Joker a panther like Bayo, but Ann is literally called Panther. So I don’t know about that one
Also Ryuji is a monkey because I said so (and his second-tier persona)
Each thief will also get their chance to summon their Persona during a climax. Who it is will depend on the scenario
I realize this nerfs Joker a bit, but I want everyone to get their chance in the spotlight, so I think it balances out
But here’s some stuff I have trouble answering
How should a demon be summoned? Should it be like in Bayonetta, through the user’s hair, or like in Persona, taking off the mask and calling the name?
Will the Phantom Thieves’ clothes be made out of their hair or not?
Who would be good substitutes for demons like Gomorrah and Labolas?
What should I call little Akira’s stuffed friend? Should I stick with Cheshire, or call it Violet?

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #18 – Part 1
Introductory post
Five on Finniston Farm – Le Club des Cinq et le coffre aux merveilles
Original publication date: 1960 (UK), 1962 (France)
Tumblr media
(Original cover art by Jeanne Hives, 1962)
There's not a lot to say about this book whose plot is rather straightforward but which does contain some nice character moments.
It's also the ONLY book from the original editions --illustrated by Baudouin, Durand, Amicis and Hives-- that I don't own a physical copy of 😬 (yet?) Not true anymore 😊
The French title translates to "Famous Five and the Coffer/Chest/Trunk of Wonders." Enjoy!
~~~~~~
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
The Famous Five spend their summer holidays at Finniston Farm [la ferme des Trois-Pignons] as paying guests. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the pleasant Mrs Philpot [Mme Bonnard] and her identical twins, Henry [Daniel] and Harriet [Danièle], jointly known as “the Harries” [les Daniels*]. The twins seem to take an instant dislike to the Five.
[* Note: It never occurred to me when I first read this book as a kid, but the twins’ having essentially the same name – the only distinction being the male and female variants – is really stupid. Who agreed to name the kids this way at birth??! The English version, featuring Henry and Harriet, is marginally more sensible.]
Tumblr media
(A refreshing halt for ice creams at the local café 🍧)
Tumblr media
(The surly Harries)
Tumblr media
(An appetising welcome at the farm!)
The Five also meet two fellow paying guests: an American, Mr Henning, and his son, Junior [these characters are also American in the French version, and thus keep the same names]. Mr Henning plans to buy antique pieces from the farm and sell them in America. Mr and Mrs Philpot agree to sell their farm treasures as they need the money. However the family's hot-tempered Great-Grandad feels the antiques should remain in England [France].
Mr Henning and Junior prove themselves a nuisance to the household by rudely ordering around Mrs Philpot. Sympathetic to Mrs Philpot, the Five offer to help with farm chores. When Junior demands breakfast in bed, George teaches him a lesson, making him agree to not slave Mrs Philpot thereafter. This wins the hearts of the Harries and they make friends with the Five.
Tumblr media
(As part of their chores, the boys help with milking the cows) [Note: I don’t know why Julian looks so smug here, because the text states that Dick has better success due to the cows’ liking his singing voice!]
Tumblr media
(Dick gets his watch stolen by Nosey, the twins’ cheeky pet jackdaw!)
Tumblr media
(Junior’s wake-up service is a tad too forceful for his taste)
Tumblr media
(Five-star service, no complaints accepted, no refunds!)
Tumblr media
(Meet the twins’ pets: Snippet the poodle [Friquet le caniche] and Nosey the jackdaw [Zoé la pie])
Anne and George visit a nearby antique shop, owned by a Mr Finniston [M. Francville], who tells them about a secret passage from Finniston Castle to an old chapel and cellars where royal treasure might be hidden.
Tumblr media
(Mr Finniston’s shop…)
Tumblr media
(…and Mr Finniston himself)
The girls excitedly reveal the news to the boys and the twins. Together, they plan to hunt for the cellars on the farm.
Tumblr media
(The girls come to tell the boys what they have learned at the antique shop; meanwhile, the boys have been busy helping with small work around the farm 🔨)
Tumblr media
(The twins, like the Five, are very interested in the story about the old castle)
They come across the castle's kitchen-midden* and realise they are close to finding the treasure.
[* Per Julian’s words: “‘A kitchen-midden is what you might call the rubbish-heap of the old days,’ explained Julian picking up some oyster shells. ‘It was often very big, when it comprised the rubbish thrown out from large houses – or castles! Things like bones and shells wouldn’t rot away like other rubbish – and I do believe we’ve found the kitchen-midden of the old castle.’”
In the translated version, Julian/François uses the Danish word for it: “kjœkkenmœdding” (that's a mouthful!), adding that they learned about it from their history teacher recently. A French word exists for it (“amas coquillier”), but the Danish word is apparently more widely used by archaeologists: « C’est un terme archéologique pour désigner les dépôts d’ordures des temps anciens, expliqua François en ramassant quelques débris. Notre professeur d’histoire nous en a parlé juste avant les vacances. C’était un grand trou où l’on enfouissait les détritus des maisons ou des châteaux forts. Les os et les poteries ne pourrissent pas comme le reste ; je crois que nous avons trouvé le kjœkkenmœdding du château de Francville. »]
Tumblr media
(I’ll just quote the book for this doggie-bliss scene: “Snippet, who had run in fright to the twins as soon as Great-Grandad had begun to shout, ran back to him, and settled on his feet. Timmy also decided to join them, and soon Great-Grandad was completely happy again, drawing on his old pipe, with one dog at his feet, the other resting a great head on his knee.” / « Friquet qui, effrayé par les cris, s’était réfugié à côté des jumeaux, retourna à sa place accoutumée. Dagobert le rejoignit. Le grand-père était maintenant l’image du bonheur, tirant sur sa vieille pipe, un chien à ses pieds et caressant la grosse tête que l’autre avait posée sur ses genoux. »)
Junior spies on the Five and the twins, and rushes to break the news to his father and his father's friend Mr Durleston, who decide to excavate the castle site, find the fortune and sell the goods in America. Mr and Mrs Philpot consent to the excavation, much to the dismay of the children. The children dig around the site, hoping to beat the men in finding the treasure. Initially they are unsuccessful but Snippet and Nosey lead them to a burrow, beneath which the secret passage stretches out. The children discover the cellars and the treasure, only to become trapped inside the tunnel when the entrance caves in.
Tumblr media
(Two boys hard at work! ⛏️)
Tumblr media
(The treasure 😮)
Tumblr media
(Crawling underground…)
They take another way and reach a trapdoor under the old chapel, which is now used as a storehouse. The farmhands Bill [Roger] and Jamie [Maurice] hear their shouts and let them out. The children get back to the farm and tell their exciting story to the astonished adults. The next day, Mr Henning and Mr Durleston try to trick the Philpots into believing the site has no treasure and offer them a meagre amount. However, Mr Philpot, backed up by his Grandad and Mr Finniston, declines the offer, making it clear they will excavate the site themselves and no longer want the Americans to stay.
Tumblr media
(Great-Grandad has found a new lease of life! 🗡️)
Tumblr media
(Great-Grandad tells Mr Henning in no uncertain terms what he can do with himself! 😤)
The adventure ends with the Five planning to stay at the farm to observe the excavation of the treasure.
That Was No Lady Whose Pooch Poached The Prize At Cincinnati’s First Dog Show
The oddly specific award, presented at Cincinnati’s first major dog show, was buried in a long list of prizes bestowed upon the finest canines in the Queen City:
“The finest and handsomest dog of any kind, and owned and entered by a lady, a gold-mounted collar; awarded Miss Jeanne Bassett; spaniel John Wilson.”
Therein lies a tale (or tail).
It was 1877. New York attracted a great deal of national attention with the inaugural Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Boston announced it would soon stage a similar event. In Cincinnati, George M. Arnold, an actor, and Robert Miles, proprietor of the Grand Opera House on Vine Street, decided that New York had nothing on our fair city and announced a major dog show to take place on Mount Adams in late June.
Arnold and Miles procured a large vacant lot next-door to the Highland House at the top of the Mount Adams Incline. Many years before, the property held a fireworks factory and in the future the Rookwood Pottery would locate there. On this plot, Miles erected an immense circus tent, 150 feet in diameter, sheltering 250 kennels.
Dogs were packed in everywhere. They came in all sizes, from a “Siberian Bloodhound” (a type of mastiff) weighing 192 pounds, to Toodles, a “black and tan,” who tipped the scales at just over 24 ounces. Cincinnatians kept different breeds back then. Newfoundlands were popular, as were spaniels, poodles, Irish setters and pointers. Other breeds seem exotic today, such as coach dogs, fox dogs (believed to be fox-dog hybrids – an impossibility), Greenham dogs and Russian shepherds.
The show got off to a wet start. Although Thursday, June 21, started out fine, a storm “of no ordinary importance” blew through and soaked the pavilion, scattering the crowd and soaking the grounds. After retying the tent ropes and hauling in a couple of truckloads of straw, the show went on, attracting so many customers at a quarter apiece that an extra day was tacked on to accommodate demand.
Other cities took envious notice. The Indianapolis Journal opined that Cincinnati staged the canine exposition to direct attention away from accusations by the Temperance newspapers that local brewers were selling adulterated suds. The St. Louis Times observed that Cincinnati was on a roll, with the dog show opening simultaneously with the display of a live beluga whale at Mount Auburn’s Lookout House, a revived professional baseball team and the ribbon cutting for the new Cincinnati-Southern Railroad.
At the conclusion of the show, the newspapers printed lengthy lists of prize winners and a couple of controversies. Dognapers stole some of the prize dogs from their be-ribboned kennels and a few pooches escaped. A lawsuit or two alleged that judges had illegally awarded prizes to undeserving mutts and the owners of a few honored dogs claimed they never received their prizes. Still, the show was declared a roaring success, a feather in Cincinnati’s cap, until, that is, the Cincinnati Gazette [26 June 1877] spilled the beans:
“At the dog show held last week, the prize for the ‘handsomest and finest dog of any kind, owned and entered by a lady,’ a gold-mounted collar, was awarded to the keeper of a house of ill-fame. The dog was named after a circus-rider who, a few days ago, shot a man with the intention of killing him.”
Tumblr media
All of this was true. The lady in question was Jeanne Bassett, who maintained a brothel at 130 Longworth Street, the very heart of Cincinnati’s red-light district. Miss Bassett was no stranger to the newspapers. In fact, her recent feud with a neighboring madam, Kate Riley, had gotten so out-of-control that the police “pulled” both houses and fined the landladies and inmates for disturbing the peace.
Madam Bassett’s award-winning spaniel was named John Wilson and may have been a gift from the gentleman with that name. Mr. Wilson was, as the Gazette intimated, a sometime equestrian for the John Robinson Circus, based in Cincinnati. As his namesake dog was wowing the judges on Mount Adams, Wilson himself was incarcerated, unable to raise bail after shooting a security guard at Wood’s Theater. As is often the case with hot-headed gunplay, alcohol was involved. In the middle of a pub crawl, Wilson and a friend, gambler Bob Cathcart, popped into Wood’s Theater at the southeast corner of Sixth and Vine. There, private policeman Charles Thompson told Cathcart to ditch his cigar. Wilson took offense and shot Thompson as they argued. Wilson fled but sent a messenger to Miss Bassett’s house. The young courier was intercepted by the police and led officers to Wilson’s hideout. Miss Bassett apparently raised money to guarantee Wilson’s bond.
All of this was still fresh in the public’s mind as the dog show was organized. It would be beyond belief that Bob Miles, the theater impresario, and George Arnold, the actor, were unfamiliar with Jeanne Bassett and her Longworth Street house. They surely would have heard about the shooting at Wood’s Theater. How they allowed Miss Bassett to register her spaniel, much less take top honors, is a bit of a mystery.
The scandal of Miss Bassett’s success, however, cast a pall over the entire enterprise and it was some years before anyone dared to stage another dog show in Cincinnati.
Bluegrass & Traveling Trivia
Wednesday, April 10, 2024
Of course we woke up to rain. Mammoth Cave Campground is a nice campground in an interesting place so we aren’t in much of a hurry to get moving. A male northern cardinal started tapping on our windshield presumably looking for seeds caught in the windshield wipers driving Dora crazy.
Tumblr media
We return the Visitors Center which is much less crowded. Jeanne comes to a stop at the Women at Mammoth and History of the Woman Ranger Uniform temporary exhibits, while Tim prowls the geology.
“Check out this fossil— it’s a scaled pre-tree.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“OMG! In the 70s women rangers were forced to wear yellow miniskirts and gogo boots. Their uniforms were designed by fashion designers in DC. They had to go to court to be able to wear the men’s uniforms.”
Tumblr media
“How do they map the different levels in a 2D map? Can you use a compass underground? How do you indicate depth?"
Tumblr media
“A woman on a caving expedition in the Flint Ridge Cave system found the connector to Mammoth, making it the longest cave. She was the only one small enough to squeeze through a crack and saw a tourist trail.”
Mammoth Cave is a National Park and it is obligatory for the Visitor Center to have a movie about the park. This interior designer had some fun with the movie room. The movie projector is attached to the backpack of a mannequin of a caver who is rappelling down through a hole in the ceiling.
Tumblr media
We drag ourselves away from Mammoth (where it is starting to rain) and leisurely retrace our steps through Kentucky. We get back Blue Ridge Parkway to Lexington KY. “Is this where the Kentucky Derby is run?” The co-pilot’s duties include answering the idle curiosity of the driver. “No, this is Kneeland race track.”
Kneeland is acres of perfectly manicured grass on artistically rolling hills crossed with immaculate white fences. It is decorated with a castle.
Tumblr media
“What’s the capital of West Virginia? I see a gold dome.” The copilot is busy petting the poodle. “Well, it must be Charleston. I fail at State Capitols for 400.”
Tumblr media
We finally head into West Virginia with a destination of New River National Recreation Area. Jeanne finds a likely boondocking spot at a ballfield in Fayetteville. There are road closures for flooding and bridges repair, so Google Maps sends us on thin winding roads.
Tumblr media
The speed limit is 55mph, but Jeanne doesn’t dare go over 35 around the tight curves. She pulls over often to allow the annoyed locals to zoom by — even around switchbacks steeply descending down a river gorge. WV 16 is a fabulous scenic drive (picture the NH Kancamagus with no tourists or amenities like signs or pullovers). You just have to wrench your eyes from the road to catch a glimpse of waterfalls and gorges.
Tumblr media
We pull up at Fayetteville Huse Memorial Park where local school baseball games draw a small crowd of parents. Finally the field lights go out. The local sheriff patrols by but doesn’t bother us.
【task 04 : freesia's family】
GRANDMOTHER   :  JEANNE (송윤아)  as  moon sook . Freesia usually spent summers with Jeanne in France, and became one of the closest family members to her. She was free-spirited, motherly and graceful. Due to her grandmother’s influence in art as an artist herself, the younger had opened up to the medium in pottery and later have found the liking in sculpture.
MOTHER   :   LAURA (송아름)  as  kim sung ryung  .  Unlike her mother, Laura is an intellect and a business mogul. Generally, she is kind-hearted and witty, however inflexible at times when it comes to setting principles on her children. Freesia sees her as someone she could rely on and loves her nevertheless, but not as greater as her grandmother’s.
FATHER   :   DAVID (최현식)   as   jo sung-ha  .   David was a good-natured father, a jack of all trades in all areas, as well as a humorous person. He collects art pieces all over the world as his hobby and also curates a museum in New York. When at home, he is an all-around, sensitive Dad that deeply loves his wife and children. She feels more at peace with him, seeing some of her emotional traces from him.
YOUNGER  BROTHER   :   JUNE (최재석 )  as  kim dong hee  .   June is more like her Mother. He is the 2nd intellect in the family as well as excelling in polo, somehow interested in Engineering. Even though he comes off as indifferent and a know-it-all, he still has a soft spot for his family. While there a numerous times they clashed between their differing views, they still found themselves in common ground through adoring polo altogether.
COUSIN   :   ZARA (신 나비)    as   park chaeyoung  .   Zara is a distant  cousin  on  their  mother’s  side  .   Freesia finds her like a sister she never had despite barely seeing each other. Only on special occasion were they reunited.
FAMILY  PET   :   LILY (나리)   .   Lily is their resident poodle, playful in nature as well as a big eater. Adopted her since 8 years ago and has been affectionate to the whole family and friendly to strangers.
I am frequently haunted by the fact that Norma jeane was sexualized from the moment she was known, she never was taken seriously, they bombarded her with photos, some even flew over her house with a helicopter just too sour on her. She said in an interview “I’m not just generally happy, if I’m generally anything, I’m generally miserable”
To many people she wasn’t a person in fact a photographer, Leon shamroy, saw her and the first thing he said was “sex on a piece of film” and since then she was a sex symbol. A colleague of hers remembers walking down the street and no one notice Norma Jeane and she asked, “do you want to see me become her?” her colleague said yes and suddenly she just turned it on and everyone was asking for a picture. Norma lived an unstable life with her mom so much of her life was spent through foster homes, when she was sixteen she married Joe DiMaggio as a way to escape.
Once she died she left all of her things to her father figure including the rights to advertising and through his life she was only advertised once for a song ad. Once he died he left all his and Norma’s things to his wife. His wife let poodle use her for advertising like Pepsi, Sony, etc. She auctioned off her personal items, even a small piano that Norma Jeanne’s mother gave her, that Norma adored. All auctioned off to strangers who never knew her, we all see her the blonde wig, Ben Lyon suggested the stage name because it reminded him of Marilyn Miller, actress who died tragically early.
The grossest part is that when she was buried her ex husband asked to be buried face down and with his case on top of hers. She was never buried as Norma Jeane, instead Marilyn Monroe.
Norma Jeane Baker was swallowed up by Hollywood, by the paparazzi, and by every man who laid eyes on her but she was not a symbol she was a person who had feelings and she wanted to be more than just her body. Norma Jean Baker hasn’t had rest since the day she died nor has she ever truly rested during the time of her life
White Poodle Antidepressant shirt
While it is fashionable among fashion editors to bash Slimane White Poodle Antidepressant shirt . I thought this look was terrific, even as it grew repetitive. My god, I thought, as the checked jackets and jeans tucked into thigh-high shearling boots strode by, then an ecru fisherman’s sweater laced with sequins, then a slick butter-colored leather jacket, then this and then that — these clothes are going to sell. And it’s no wonder other designers are paying attention, and also breaking the rules. Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, in their debut for the house of Nina Ricci, showed clothes that seemed more connected to the contemporary spirit of Balenciaga. Olivier Rousteing’s collection for Balmain might have been an ode to Chanel for all its tweeds and extensive offerings. Unisex And Bruno Sialelli’s first collection for Lanvin was the perfect example of how young designers blend references in a way that might seem, to their elders, as disrespectful or unorthodox, but to them is second nature White Poodle Antidepressant shirt . As the oldest French fashion house to remain in business since its founding, Lanvin holds a special status among its peers. That is the allure of history. The company was started in the late 19th century by Jeanne Lanvin, initially a designer of children’s wear. Clothes for moms came not much later, but even its logo, which resembles a sailboat at sea, is in fact a stylized drawing of a mother embracing her child. This logo figured prominently in the debut collection of its latest designer, young Bruno Sialelli, formerly of Loewe, who is the third and thus far most convincing one to attempt to save this house since the abrupt departure of Alber Elbaz in 2015. Sialelli included a black skirt printed with the logo in his show, held in the Musée de Cluny, which is focused on the Middle Ages, perhaps explaining the simultaneous appearance of a knight on horseback slaying a dragon. The knight was rendered in sequins on a black velvet halter gown. You Can See More Product: https://kingteeshops.com/product-category/trending/ Read the full article
Famous Five Art Nostalgia #14 - Part 1
Introductory post
Five Have Plenty of Fun – Enlèvement au Club des Cinq
Original publication date: 1955 (UK), 1961 (France)
Tumblr media
(Original cover by Jeanne Hives, 1961)
I often find myself annoyed at Blyton’s lack of distinctiveness with the book titles – I mean, “Five Get into Trouble”, “Five Fall into Adventure”, “Five Have a Wonderful Time”, “Five Have a Mystery to Solve”, “Five Get into a Fix”, “Five Are Together Again”: all of these could be used for any of the books. In contrast, the French titles are usually more specifically related to the books' contents.
What I find really funny about volume #14 is the complete tonal shift between the English and French titles:
-> English: Five Have Plenty of Fun! 🥳
-> French: Abduction Among the Five! 😱
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
Siblings Julian, Dick and Anne have come to Kirrin to spend the remainder of a school holiday with their cousin George and her dog, Timmy.
(A lovely sea dive)
Two scientist colleagues of George's father, Uncle Quentin, visit Kirrin Cottage to work on an alternative energy project. One of them is a large friendly American, Elbur Wright [Charles Martin, from Lyons (the guy is not American in the French version, just from another city)]. His only daughter, Berta [Berthe], is later threatened with being kidnapped and ransomed for the project's secrets. Elbur decides to send Berta to Kirrin for her safety.
(Uncle Quentin announces the upcoming arrival of an extra guest) [This picture looks so funny to me, it’s like those scenes we can see in crime procedurals where a bunch of people are standing, and the victim has to identify a suspect 😂)
George takes an instant disliking to Berta, especially as the American girl has brought her dog, a poodle called Sally [Chouquette]. George's resentment is furthered when Berta's hair is cut short to make her resemble a boy. Berta is also dressed as a boy and referred to as Lesley [Michel, homonymic to her second name Michèle] to throw the kidnappers off her scent.
A few days later, Uncle Quentin receives an urgent message to meet with Elbur to discuss calculations for their energy project. He leaves with his wife, Aunt Fanny, and plans to be gone for a week, leaving the children alone with Joanna, the cook.
(The children become uneasy when they realise that they’re being observed from the island)
One night, George lends Timmy to protect Berta in Joanna's bedroom, while Sally is put in George's bedroom. Irked by the poodle, George decides to put her outside in Timmy's kennel but the kidnappers are waiting and seize George, mistaking her for Berta.
The next day, Julian, Dick and Anne eventually realise that George has been kidnapped instead of Berta. Afraid that Berta might also be abducted, they send her away to stay with Joanna's cousin, with whom the children's gypsy friend, Jo, also lives. Berta is dressed as a simple country girl and is now called Jane [Michèle]. Julian, Dick and Anne then find clues left by George, including a slip of paper with the word 'Gringo' written on it.
Tumblr media
(George had enough wits about her to leave a trail for Timmy and her cousins to follow) [Bonus: Go to the end of the summary for something fun!]
Through Jo, the children learn that Gringo runs a fair. Jo's friend at the fair, Spiky [Pedro], points them in the direction of Gringo's caravan, where George had until recently been held captive. Julian enlists the help of a local garage worker, Jim, to find out the recent movements of Gringo's distinctive car. They soon have directions to a house where they suspect George is being held.
That night, Julian and Dick set off with Timmy to find George. Jo secretly follows them. The boys eventually find George, but the three are then caught and locked in a room. Jo and Timmy then rescue them and the crooks are locked up.
The children return to Kirrin Cottage and tell their tale to Anne and Joanna. After an enormous breakfast, they all fall asleep. Aunt Fanny, Uncle Quentin, Elbur and Berta arrive at Kirrin Cottage later that morning. The police are summoned and instructed to arrest the men locked in the house. Elbur consents to Berta staying longer at Kirrin with her new friends. Finally, Dick proposes to write their adventure down in a book and call it “Five Have Plenty Of Fun Enlèvement au Club des Cinq 😉”.
Bonus:
I don’t intend to make a full comparison between Blyton’s original text and its translations. While this would surely be interesting, it would also be entirely too time-consuming. Still, as I was looking at the text opposite the picture that shows Dick and Timmy discovering George’s broken comb, I realised that there was a small character moment between Dick and Julian that simply did not feature in the original text. So here it is, as a treat!
~*~
Blyton’s original text:
They ran to see what it was. Timmy was trying to get at some small object embedded in a car-rut. Evidently, in turning, the car had run over whatever it was.
Dick saw something broken in half – something green. He picked up the halves. “A comb! Did George have a little green comb like this?”
“Yes, she did,” said Julian. “She must have thrown it down when she got near the car – to show us she was taken here – hoping we would find it. And look, what’s that?”
~*~
French text:
Ils accoururent près du chien, qui essayait d’atteindre un objet enterré dans une ornière. Mick vit bientôt dépasser quelque chose de vert. C’était un peigne, cassé en deux. En tournant, l’auto l’avait sans doute enfoncé dans le sol.
« François, te souviens-tu si Claude possédait un peigne vert ? demanda Mick. J’avoue que, pour ma part, il ne me rappelle rien.
— Naturellement. Tu détestes te coiffer. Mais c’est le peigne de Claude, j’en suis sûr, parce qu’elle me l’a prêté plusieurs fois.
— Pauvre François ! Quand on est affligé d’épis aussi raides que les tiens, je comprends qu’on fasse tout son possible pour les aplatir.
— Tu me paieras ça plus tard ! Pour le moment, nous avons autre chose à faire que de nous chamailler. Ce peigne est tombé de la poche de Claude, à moins qu’elle ne l’ait jeté ici, en espérant que nous le trouverions. Cherchons, peut-être y a-t-il autre chose… Regarde ce chiffon blanc, là-bas ! »
~*~
Literal translation of the French text:
They ran over to the dog, who was trying to reach something buried in a car-rut. Mick soon saw something green sticking out. It was a comb, broken in two. As the car made its turning, it had probably pushed it into the ground.
“Julian, do you remember if George had a green comb? I have to admit that I don't remember anything about it.”
“Of course you don't. You hate doing your hair. But it's George's comb, I'm sure, because she's lent it to me several times.”
“Poor Julian! When you're afflicted with cowlicks as stiff as yours, I can understand why you do everything you can to get them flat.”
“You'll pay for that later! Right now, we've got better things to do than bicker. This comb fell out of George's pocket, unless she threw it down here, hoping we'd find it. Let's have a look, maybe there's something else... Look at that white cloth over there!"
~*~
So there you have it! I thought this small banter between Julian and Dick regarding their respective haircare routines was worth mentioning!
Cover art through the ages:
(Disclaimer: This is not an exhaustive list; sometimes the dates are difficult to pinpoint; and I have purposefully not included editions that re-used similar cover art, with differences only in layout and font style.)
Tumblr media
(Original cover by Jeanne Hives, Hachette, 1961. I think the playing-cards visual is an interesting take – even if it has nothing to do with the story. The letters in the corners (F, M, A, C, D) are the characters’ initials.)
Tumblr media
(Jean Sidobre goes for a literal interpretation of the “abduction” theme presented in the title… even though the depicted scene never occurs in the story – Hachette, 1974)
Tumblr media
(J.P. Morvan clearly takes a lot of inspiration from Sidobre's art above - France Loisirs, 1979) [Sorry for the flare, this is the best picture I could find]
Tumblr media
(Fittingly, this has a very “American gangster movie” feel – complete with tyres lifting from the ground! Umberto Nonna, Edito Service, 1981)
Tumblr media
(Ripping off Sidobre’s design again… 🙄 – Yves Beaujard, Hachette, 1988)
Tumblr media
(Following George’s trail! Paul Gillon, France Loisirs, c. 1995, based on earlier art from 1991)
Tumblr media
(A spooky ambiance from Munch & Prunier, Hachette, 2000)
Tumblr media
(Another uninspiring cover from Frédéric Rébéna, Hachette, 2008 😮‍💨)
Tumblr media
(Investigating at Gringo’s Fair – cute wooden horses aside, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GEORGE DOING HERE?!? THE BOYS AND ANNE ARE LOOKING FOR HER, FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE 😭😩 – Auren, Hachette, 2020)
