Print Editions of “Animalheads,” “Signals,”  “The Flying Ship,” and “Tomahawk Angel” Announced
Tumblr media
Dark Horse Books and Tapas Entertainment have partnered to bring the Animalheads, Signals, The Flying Ship, and Tomahawk Angel webcomics to print.
Animalheads hails from writer Son M and artist Sam Curtis. “When four best friends enter adulthood with no job prospects and the insatiable pressures of family hanging over them, they get creative—the more dangerous the gig, the richer the reward. What starts off as a part-time venture scaring people quickly spirals out of control, pulling them headfirst into a waking nightmare when they unknowingly cross a violent crime syndicate. Now, their survival is on a knife's edge as they become the newest outfit in the criminal underworld.” (Dark Horse)
Animalheads goes on sale in bookstores on October 10, 2023, and in comic shops on October 11, 2023.
Tumblr media
Signals hails from writer and artist Nika. “Mel Song is an unlikely fit for a crack investigator. In her downtime she loves watching soap operas in her pajamas, eating instant ramen, and internet shopping. But she has one secret weapon: the ability to read minds. Still, Mel can't afford to get complacent. Not when there is a fresh threat brewing in the shadows of New York City...” (Dark Horse)
Signals Vol. 1 goes on sale in bookstores on October 17, 2023, and in comic shops on October 18, 2023.
Tumblr media
The Flying Ship hails from writer and artist Jem Milton. “After being stranded in a forgotten military outpost, grumpy Dobrinia sets out on a quest to marry a princess. But in the vast Tzardom of Glas, where magic has been outlawed, troubled histories can catch up with even a flying ship.” (Dark Horse)
The Flying Ship Vol. 1 goes on sale in bookstores on October 24, 2023, and in comic shops on October 25, 2023.
Tumblr media
Tomahawk Angel hails from Odysseas Theodoratos, aka Mangaka Ody. “In the year 2050, an 18-year-old amnesiac wakes up to a ruined world overrun by monsters. Guided by an artificial superintelligence, a ruthless scientist unleashes hell on Earth to preserve only a fraction of humankind. Love and war await as the mysteries of this corrupt new world unfold!” (Dark Horse)
Tomahawk Angel Vol. 1 goes on sale in bookstores on October 31, 2023, and in comic shops on November 1, 2023.

ARC Review: The Big Book of Pride Flags by Jessica Kingsley and Jem Milton
Tumblr media
Preorder
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: June 21, 2022
Synopsis:
Celebrate and learn about the LGBTQIA+ community with this colourful book of Pride flags! Featuring all the colours of the rainbow, this book teaches children about LGBTQIA+ identities through 17 different Pride flags. With fun facts, simple explanations and a short history of each flag accompanying beautiful illustrations, children will uncover the history of Pride and be introduced to different genders and sexual orientations. There's also a blank Pride flag design at the back of the book so that children can create their very own Pride flag! With a Reading Guide that provides a detailed History of the Pride Flag and questions for further discussion, this inspiring book is a must-have for every child's bookshelf, library or classroom.
My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
This was such an affirming and joyful read!
This book contained a lot of information but it didn't feel like an info-dump or overwhelming. Each flag had a brief but thorough rundown: a bit of history (who designed it, when it was designed, some background) and a matter-of-fact explanation of what each color stripe stands for. I learned a lot and look forward to reading it with my second-grader.
The colors are bright and cheerful and definitely made me want to read more. The art style was cute while still allowing for lots of detail and individuality of the characters. The illustrations are diverse and welcoming, showcasing diversity of race, disability, gender presentation, age, and body size.
Overall this was a warm, welcoming, joyful and engaging read and I absolutely loved it.
*Thanks to NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for providing an e-arc for review.

I still have some questions about Belial:
1) How did Belial make Tessa with his curse?
2) Was Belial's debt to Jem originally planned as something other than passing on a message?
3) Why would Belial give powers to James and esp Lucie when they could use them against him (and in the latter's case, he didn't care about her)? I just still can't understand why they would be taken away with his death or why he'd intentionally bother with that.
Thank you in advance!
Okay! I would say strap in for some boring technical the-nature-of-fantasy-writing stuff.
How did Belial make Tessa with his curse?
We already know Belial can, in fact, walk on the earth if he possesses someone. In the case of possessing an ordinary human, the body falls apart quickly. If he possesses a demon it lasts longer, and he could wander about for a while as a demon if he liked, he's just not interested. He's obsessed with the idea of being on the earth in a human body: i.e. James. Anyway, he possessed the Eidolon demon that took the form of Richard Gray, Tessa's father.
2) Was Belial's debt to Jem originally planned as something other than passing on a message?
It took me a while to try to understand this question, and I'm still not totally sure I do. I thought it was a question about what the favor was, but I think it's "Did you ever plan for Belial to owe Jem for some other reason?"  To which the answer is no. It was always planned to hinge on the deal that is made re: the Herondales. While Jem frames it as "passing on a message" that is in fact, not what the favor was.
3) Why would Belial give powers to James and esp Lucie when they could use them against him (and in the latter's case, he didn't care about her)? I just still can't understand why they would be taken away with his death or why he'd intentionally bother with that.
These seem like two different questions, so for the first one: Belial didn't give powers to James and Lucie in the way you seem to be framing it. He gave a specific power to Grace, which is why Grace, you know, remembers that happening. James and Lucie just have powers because they are related to Belial. Same reason Tessa has her power. Belial had no idea what the specifics of all his mortal descendants would be—how could he? Shadowhunter/demon hybrids had never existed before. He may have thought they might have powers of some sort, but he did not handcraft them and send them to James and Lucie for Demon Christmas. :-)
As for why, I guess, Belial didn't kill them in the womb or something (assuming he could have done that) — this seems to be the question, "Why would Belial ever make a mistake or take a risk?" And the answer is, "Why wouldn't that happen?" Being a demon doesn't insulate Belial from having flaws or being in error (some might say that's the essential nature of demons.) It's a bit like asking why Satan made war on God in Paradise Lost when he was certain to lose because you know, God. Milton kind of wrote his entire epic poem to answer that question. And (Cliff Notes): the answer was pride. Pride blinded Lucifer, and if Lucifer can be blinded by pride, then Belial can also be blinded by his own flaws, specifically hubris and a misunderstanding of the nature of human beings. While Belial knew James and Lucie had powers, he never thought those powers posed a significant risk to him and he wrongly assumed he would always be more powerful than they were and easily able to turn their powers to his advantage. Jem explains Belial's error fairly plainly:
"There was also the great weakness of demons: they did not understand either love or faith. Belial had underestimated not just Cordelia, Lucie, and James, but also their friends, and what they would all do for each other."
As for why J&L's powers vanished with his death: I think there is a confusion here between two kinds of magic. Rules-based magic, and numinous magic. Rules-based magic being what it sounds like, and numinous magic being magic that has an almost mystical element that cannot be explained like a math problem but is rooted in the resonance of human experience, of myth and fairy tale. Rules-based magic needs to be explained to us in fiction. Numinous magic we understand because we're human and we know. (Jo Walton has a good essay on the two kinds of magic and the ways they work together and apart here.)
Neither is a better kind of magic in fiction than the other and most good fantasy contains both. An example: The Ring in Lord of the Rings. It has a numinous power: it exerts an evil influence, but that evil influence doesn't work in a specific, ordered way, and it works differently in different situations and on different people, often without an obvious reason why. But it makes sense, as long as you keep the essential nature of the Ring in mind. The Ring also has another power. If you put it on, you become invisible. The end. Works the same for everyone. The Ring has both numinous and rules-based powers.
If you are looking for a math-type answer to why James and Lucie's powers vanished with Belial's death, there is not one, as their powers were inherently numinous to begin with, and we already have both rules-based and numinous magic in the Shadowhunter world. In fact, we already have examples of magic coming apart when the magic-creator dies in the Shadowhunter world. When Sebastian dies, the Endarkened die with him. When Johnny Rook dies, his wards fail.
To go back to Lord of the Rings, when Sauron dies, his fortress of Barad-dûr collapses. This is not because it was architecturally unsound. It is because we understand things like Sauron's fortress to be the expression of someone's will in the world, and when they die, their will is broken.
The breaking or undoing of that will is concretized in fiction (just like all metaphor is) — so while James and Lucie couldn't have predicted that their powers would vanish with Belial's death as their situation (being a Prince of Hell’s Shadowhunter grandchildren) is literally unprecedented, it makes sense to them that their powers would go when he went. They don't seek a rules-based explanation since 1) they already live in a world where magic sometimes disappears or collapses when the magic-creator dies and 2) they don't need one. As James says, "Not because [the gun] no longer fires at my command, though that is true—but because it only ever worked for me because of Belial, and Belial is gone."

We’ve worked with so many fantastic creators over the past two years, all with different styles, creative processes, and approaches to comic-making. Here’s 16 artists’ advice for aspiring comic creators!
“You really just have to do it. Start something, get that experience, finish it or not - move onto the next project. Gotta keep going. Comics take time. Might as well start now.” - @sticksandsharks
Tumblr media
"Read comics you love and try to figure out why they are so good, read as broadly as you can and try as many different styles and ideas as you can. Follow what is fun and interesting to you, rather than what seems like the “professional” or “right” way to do it.” - @toadlett
Tumblr media
"Start with something small, maybe a few panels or a few pages, and finish it. Then do the same again. Making comics can be a very solitary activity, so find others that are doing the same thing, and do it with support.” - Julie Campbell
Tumblr media
“Don’t wait until you’re a comics master to start making something, you will learn so much more by sitting down and drawing. You can always come back to your original idea and try it a different way. You might love your next attempt.” - Jem Milton
Tumblr media
“Tell stories YOU want to tell. There’s no real value in chasing trends - others are already doing it after all. What people are interested in is reading the story only YOU can tell. You have a unique life experience that no-one else can replicate.” - Chris Manson
Tumblr media
“A simple, practical piece of advice I would give someone would be to get a cork board. Being able to use a cork board to lay out your thumbnails is very useful! Just seeing it all laid out can help reduce the anxiety of a larger project.” - Thomas Heitler
Tumblr media
“Finish comics. A mediocre finished story is always better than an unfinished/unseen magnum opus. Making mistakes and bad art is something everyone should get used to.” - Jack Devereaux
Tumblr media
“Try to entertain yourself and maybe one or two other people. Make comics for in-jokes no one else understands, or ideas that come to your mind. Try not to think about doing everything all at once.” - Robbie Kieran
Tumblr media
“Don’t worry too much about finishing things. Even an unfinished project will teach you an incredible amount. Don’t let a fear of an unfinished work hold you back from starting a project that you’re passionate about.” - @ariadnearca
Tumblr media
“Drop the ‘aspiring’ and dive in. Have you already doodled the cool scenes you’re excited about? Then congrats, you’re a comic artist. Get started on page 1 so I can see it.” - @spiremint
Tumblr media
“Create the stories you want to make and that you want to read. Forget about what you think a publisher or a potential audience might want.” - @domduongart
Tumblr media
“Make sure you’re making comics for YOU, not what you think other people want! If you have enthusiasm for your project, it will always shine through. If it’s a slog, and you’re not enjoying it, hit the bricks!” - @elljwalker
Tumblr media
“Keep going. Keep obsessing over those things you love. Keep making things. Keep sharing them with people. Take breaks.” - @pppondi
Tumblr media
“Your comic will never be perfect, but thats okay - it’s good even! You learn while you work, even if it’s just learning what you would change next time. It’s good to make mistakes, it’s good to learn and grow.” - @kroovv
Tumblr media
“If you want to be a creator, you should create for yourself. You’ll always have an audience that way. I think people that appreciate good comics can see work that’s honest. Just be yourself. There is always a place for you.” - @prehistoricfrog
Tumblr media
“If you have a story, get it down. You don’t need to consider yourself a comic artist to make a comic. If you can draw, and you need to say something, just start drawing boxes and see where it goes.” - @bethfuller
Tumblr media
If you’d like to pick up a comic from any of the artists featured here, check out the Quindrie Press shop or the Kickstarter we’re running for our new comic collection!
What's your advice for people who are just starting out in comics?

6. There was the lightest rap on the door, which meant Anne could ignore it if she wanted to doze or was too fatigued to visit with whoever it was on the other side, but as weak and worn out as she felt, she was beginning to be bored and missed the world that wasn’t bounded by the four walls of her bedroom in Ingleside, for all that she had a view into the garden.
“Come in,” she said, making an effort to sit up and failing, until Gilbert hurried over and plumped the pillows behind her, his strong arm gentle around her ribs as he helped her up, dropping the briefest kiss on her cheek before he smoothed back her loosened hair and let her go.
“We’ve brought you something good, Mother!” Jem announced. He had such a look of Gilbert about him, sturdily built, his expression always open and frank, his little jaw square as his father’s.
“Yes, something very good,” Walter piped, the very sounding much like Sandy McPherson’s verra. He was slighter than Jem and she could see he was working hard to hold up his end of the tray they’d carried in. “Papa says it’s good for you—”
“Father,” Jem corrected, quite determined to be the big boy of the family, but so cheerful and stalwart that Walter was clearly untroubled by it.
“Father said so and he’s a man of since, Susan says, so he knows,” Walter went on.
“Science,” Jem said. “That means he’s a doctor, he knows all about people’s insides and what they need to get better and strong. Even if they’re very sick after having a baby.”
“I’m not very sick,” Anne said. “It’s just taking a little while for me to get my strength back and Susan is helping so much with the new baby and Miss Cornelia with the twins.”
“Nan cried for an hour after Miss Cornelia said she had to eat all her porridge,” Jem announced. Gilbert caught her eye and nodded in agreement, raising an eyebrow. “She didn’t finish it though and Miss Cornelia said she’d never seen the like and then Di asked whether angels could have mustaches and they forgot all about the porridge.”
“I put in the garden. I thought it might be good for a fairy,” Walter said.
“A fairy wouldn’t eat porridge, Walter,” Jem said.
“You never know,” Gilbert interrupted. “Shall we give Mother the treat you worked so hard on?”
“It was mostly you, Papa,” Jem said, forgetting to call Gil Father, which made Anne smile.
“It’s sweets and Papa let me put in the ginger,” Walter said. “I sneezed but it most all went in.”
“I mixed up all the flour and sugar and m’lasses,” Jem said. “It was hard work, it seemed as if it didn’t want to be all stirred together, but it must be, otherwise it would be ruined. It was lumpy for a while, then Papa fixed that too.”
“I think I know what it must be,” Anne said, lifting her hand to beckon the boys closer. They were old enough they wouldn’t clamber onto the bed the way the twins did. She could probably invite them up to give them a cuddle after she’d eaten, one on each side nestled in, Walter sure to lay his head against her breast, Jem more reluctant to leave, though he’d refuse to say why.
“You do? Are you a witch?” Jem asked. “Milton Derry says witches have red hair and queer powers like owls seeing in the dark, and they’re not all bad, he says.”
“No, I’m not a witch,” Anne said, glancing at Walter. “I’m not a fairy either. I just know Papa very well, so it must be the Blythe gingerbread. That’s his specialty.”
“I thought he liked to fix people’s hearts the best, that was his specially,” Jem said.
“He does,” Anne said. She looked up at Gilbert and held his eyes for a moment. He smiled and she saw how it lightened the fatigue in his face, how he looked like the boy she’d once known and fretted over. “Sometimes he uses his stethoscope and sometimes medicine in big brown bottles and sometimes he makes the Blythe gingerbread. And now you’ll be able to as well.”
“We tried it,” Walter admitted. “It’s good, but a little spicy.”
“That’s how it works,” Jem said. “The spiciness is how it fixes you, makes you all warm inside. That’s zactly what Mama—what Mother needs, because otherwise why would she have to stay in bed under her blankets all day long?”
“Let me have some and we’ll see how much better it makes me feel,” Anne said.
“Don’t feel you have to finish it,” Gilbert said. “Just take as much as you like.”
“The boys will help me, won’t you?” Anne said. “Come up here with Mother and let’s have some of this lovely gingerbread and then you may play in the garden for a bit while Papa stays here with me and helps fix my heart some more.”

— É tudo — anunciara Will, ao finalmente terminar. — E não o culpo se me odiar. Posso entender.
Confuso o Diabo ficou / E sentiu o quanto a bondade é terrível.
— Você salvou minha vida — dissera Will.

Je ne t'en voudrais pas de me haïr. Je peux comprendre.
Un long silence avait suivi.
Malgré lui, Will avait haussé les épaules.
