Cal wakes up from a nap. Oops, fell asleep on the couch again. He's so dozy, so comfy, maybe he'll drift off again and...
Wait.
Something feels different about his head. He stirs, brushing the blanket pulled up to his chin.
"Shhh. Go back to sleep." It's Merrin. She must be sitting next to his head. "I am not finished yet."
Her fingers are in his hair, brushing through and separating small handfuls into trios. The feeling is familiar, a distant memory from so long ago. He feels himself relaxing. "Why're you braiding my hair?" he asks, although it sounds more like "whyybraidnmuhheyh?"
Somehow, Merrin interprets his mushy words. "It is shiny. And pretty."
"S'not."
"Oh, yes, it is." There's a gentle tug as she deftly braids. "Fiery. Like my magicks."
"S'green."
"Hush, Cal. Let me finish."
Cal zones out, drifting into memories of Master Tapal patiently plaiting his braid, tying it off with the finest of thread. It never seemed possible for someone with such huge hands, and yet Master Tapal managed it every time. Sometimes he would tug on it to get Cal's attention. Other times, if he couldn't grab the hood of Cal's robes fast enough, he'd grab Cal's braid instead, and that never failed to bring Cal to a sudden and complete halt - usually before he wandered into traffic in the Brave's landing bay. He smiles at the memories, at the warmth, the tradition, the simplicity.
Merrin probably isn't going in for simplicity. Maybe he'll look like Cere did in that echo he picked up from Trilla's lightsaber. She looked so awesome with her hair like that. Could he grow his hair out that long? His pictures it - autumn reds, oranges and golds trailing all the way down his back, tied in intricate braids...
...who is he kidding? He'd sling it back in a ponytail and be done with it.
He giggles to himself.
"You are strange, Cal," Merrin tells him.
She has no idea.
A few minutes later, Merrin's fingers pull away. "Done. You may wake up. BD? You can come and look now."
Familiar feet tippy-tappy their way over. BD gives a long, slow beep of awe, and then the light of his scanner shines through Cal's eyelids.
Pretty, BD declares.
"I am not pretty," Cal grumbles.
"You are. You are a pretty princess," Merrin says. "BD, quick, make a recording."
"Excuse you, I'm no princess, I am a queen," Cal corrects.
"Forgive us, Your Majesty," Merrin says.
Curiosity wins and he opens his eyes, sits, frees his hands from the blanket, and explores his head. What he finds is a series of small, tight braids encircling his head - much like a crown. He leans forward and catches a glimpse of his reflection on the table. "Huh."
"You like it?" Merrin asks. "Cere explained to me how to do it, but it is easier to practice on somebody else."
"I do like it," Cal says. "It's really practical. Keeps it out of my eyes, too."
The hatch opens. Cere and Greez board the ship, both carrying several grocery bags. Cere clocks Cal first, nodding in approval. Greez does a double-take, puts down his bags, and moves in for a closer inspection.
"Well?" Cal asks, moving his head to really show it off.
"I love it!" Greez gushes. "I mean I really love it. I want it. I want that style right now."
"When you have more hair, I will teach you how," Merrin says.
He grins. "It's a deal. You heard it here, folks, Greezy is officially growing his hair out."

Random Post Kenobi/Jedi: Fallen Order headcanon!
Reva goes into the galaxy to find her own path for herself, and she winds up living in the Mantis.
It's a perfect situation! 3/4 of the Mantis crew also have trauma, survivor's guilt, ptsd and need therapy!
Maybe Merrin teaches Reva her magicks? That'd be really cool.
And the bogling stow away instantly loves Reva and always wants to be around her. One day it's just sleeping on her shoulders and she lets it happen because it's adorable.
Cal, Merrin, Cere and Reva all get therapy and just chill in their ship for the rest of the Empire and then once the Empire is gone, I dunno, they just keep chilling and staying the fuck away from the disaster that is the Skywalker family.
I wanna draw Reva with a little bogling buddy now but, I don't have the time, I have a lot of wips already.
It might pop up out of nowhere anyway.
Edit: Just saw Cal's new apperance, he's got a little beard growing. I hope he still has the pink poncho.

Cal Kestis headcanon: because of his years of unsupervised living on Bracca, he has horrible eating and sleeping habits. He'll be up at 2 am chugging caf for no reason and thinking ration bars count as a meal. Greez is having an aneurysm. Cere is horrified. Merrin sees nothing wrong with this.

help, im obsessed with the idea that Cal soaks up languages and skills like a sponge because of his psychometry and after a particularly long or in-depth (or traumatizing) echo, he has a hard time switching back to Basic and just keeps talking in whatever language the echo was in.
Just imagine baby face padawan Cal coming back to the Albedo Brave speaking an entirely new language and the entire company is just "oh no what the fuck do we do" because they can't understand him and he's having a hard time understanding them and it takes two full standard days before he finally starts slipping Basic back into his vocabulary and fully understands them, and then another day before he's back to Basic completely.
But he holds onto that language. Maybe not all of it, but a good portion of it. And he's just a bottomless well of slang and phrases of different languages, and he sounds like he grew up learning whatever it is.

Jedi Survivor Modern AU where Cal consistently finds himself in A+E with broken bones etc. because he keeps launching himself from massive heights and scaling tall structures for fun.
He jokes to the hospital staff that he should have a loyalty card. They joke that they should blacklist him.
Merrin is his emergency contact and she is DONE with hospital waiting rooms and her boyfriend's antics.

I think it’s interesting in a gender sort of way how Trilla hates being ma’am’ed in the comics and instructs her troopers to call her “inquisitor” instead. There's also how she’s immediately okay with Cal calling her “Trilla” whereas every other inquisitor (including Reva, who has the least loyalty to the organization) prefers their numbered title once they've earned it/if they're not in an intimate setting. I don't know exactly how that manifests for her but it's definitely an interesting pattern

Greez Dritus knits. He knits socks for Cal, and mittens for Merrin and a scarf for Cere. He knits a blanket to drape over the sofa for when it gets cold. He knits a poncho for Cal, and leg warmers for Merrin, and washcloths to clean BD-1 and to wipe down the kitchen counter when it gets dirty, and a headband for Ceret to keep her ears warm.
Greez knits when he's anxious. He knits when it's been a little too long since they heard from Cal over the comms. He knits after a narrow escape or an uncomfortably close run-in with the Empire. He knits when someone on the Mantis crew gets sick or injured. He knits while he waits for Cal to recover after Nur.
Greez knits when he misses home. He knits when he misses his grandmother, her warmth and kindess. Remembers how she thaght him all those years ago. He knits when he misses the time before the Empire, when they didn't need to look over their shoulder all the time. He knits when he's feeling particularly sentimental.
Greez knits because it's a good way to pass time. Greez knits because it helps him relax. Greez knits because, when their faces light up when he gives them the gifts, his heart sings.

I'd like to think that Quinlan Vos helped Cal understand his psychometry when he was a youngling and/or a padawan, during quiet times, to Jaro Tapal complete dismay who wouldn't want any bad influence on his padawan. (no weapons involved, only nice things, with sweet echoes. Quinlan is not THAT irresponsible. I think. Aayla turned out okay after all) With all the banter involving links with other characters like Greez interest in Yaddle or even Qui-Gon friendship with Cordova, I think it would have been cute to learn more form Cal and his childhood at the Temple.
(Close up under the cut !)

Strolling into the galley, Greez sees Cal drinking from a tiny cup he'd picked up during their supply run. "Whatcha got there?"
Cal knocks it back and winces like someone poured acid into his mouth. "A represso."
Greez can't have heard that right. "A what?"
"A represso. Guaranteed to repress bad memories."
"Is it working?"
Cal stares at him. "Sorry, who are you?"
Greez throws a wash cloth at him. Cal cackles.

The practice of making the ascent to the cave beneath the Witch's Horn fell out of use after 10 BBY. The lair, once the roost of the chirodactyl called Gorgara, retains hydraatis acid markings left by former Nightbrothers who made the journey up the peak.
Startling examples of early offerings have been preserved in the cave: tokens for the chirodactyl made in exchange for the health and protection of the brothers, suggesting a practice in sympathetic magic, or that there was a shared belief that the chirodactyl — one of the oldest of its species on Dathomir — may have possessed magical powers.
Several of the pictographs have been smeared with mushling inks to simulate Nightbrother markings, and many have faded paints in place to suggest variations of goldenrod, brown, butter yellow, and crimson skin. The most daring and elaborate pictographs must have taken hours to etch, the risk to self less than the dangers presented to those Nightbrothers requiring supernatural aid.
Dathomir's "brotherhood", it seems, extends beyond concern for the individual, often petitioning the creature to grant favour to those in need: wellness, good fortune, safe keeping for the smallest and most vulnerable of the Nightbrother warriors subject to the dangers of their world.

Merrin had helped Cal many times with his various wounds. He was always getting himself into some sort of scrape, both figuratively and literally. This time, he’d managed to grab a more textured ledge, slicing the palms of his hands. As Merrin tenderly cleaned and bandaged the scratches, she noticed the warmth she felt while maintaining physical contact with Cal. Instead of releasing his hands when she was done, she held them tighter. Cal looked up with a questioning gaze, but didn’t pull away. Instead, he grasped her hands back and they sat in a comfortable silence for sometime.
