But are you reading Shoukoku no Altair?

As the nerd who spends way too much time while translating Yume no Shizuku, Kin no Torikago, I wanted to make a post on my first "Ottoman" manga: Shoukoku no Altair.

Left: A real-life Mahmut (Ottoman Sultan, Mahmut II). Right: Japanese Mahmut. I know that Altair has nothing to with his time period, but I can't help but think about Mahmut II everytime I hear the name "Mahmut". He's such a boss. So in my mind, a Mahmut can never be as bishounen as Tughril Mahmut.

I first saw that manga in the dark corners of LiveJournal years ago, at a time when there weren't even scanlations. And I LOVED the art. But back then, due to the lack of scans and because I couldn't even read the Japanese title, I forgot about it for years. Yes, I do have a very bad memory.

Fast forward to 2017, Shoukoku no Altair got an anime adaptation. And when was I going to start reading this Ottoman-inspired manga if not now? Like I did with DoD, I expected it to be an orientalist trainwreck. But little did I know that Katou Kotono had a degree in history and the more I got into Altair, the more I would be crying about how ignorant I was. I quickly caught up with the story. And boy, did I love it! (The anime adaptation doesn't do this manga justice. And I'm still mad that they skipped an entire sea battle.)

Published SnA volumes, minus the latest vol. 24, and the fanbook. Japan should bring SAL back already, I want to be able to buy my mangos without developing shipping strategies.

Warning for DoD fans, this is a full shounen manga. There is no shoujo romance to see here (I'm still mad at the editors for forcing that dancer girl in the story in the earlier volumes because a shounen manga had to have a female love interest. I'm glad we didn't get to see her again and if anything, not-Vlad the Impaler's cute daughter would make a better waifu for a pasha like Mahmut). It's about the wars between the not-Ottomans and the not-Holy Roman Empire, complete with some Italian city-state drama. It only has battles, politics and keikakus. Huge armies maneuver in battle, alliances are made and broken, heads fly, armies clash, cities are besieged, we peek at the logistics behind huge armies, and civil war and coup d'états can happen any moment! If you are in DoD for politics, I'm sure you will love Altair because it actually delivers in that department.

My little pasha can't be this smug. Vol. 20, and vol. 9's cover from the Milkazzar Altair art book (2014). Those volume covers have me screaming.

Unlike DoD, Altair is not a fully historical manga, so it's not based on real events nor there's a set time frame for it. But looking at the story elements, we can say that it's set somewhere around the second half of the 15th century. So it's somewhat close to DoD's time frame if we squeeze hard enough. I also think Burak Paşa, the "sultan" in Altair, kind of resembles to an old Suleiman I.

Every little detail in Altair is just chef's kiss! Katou-sensei has a vast knowledge of military tactics and uses it in every chapter of Altair. And huge kudos to Sense Scans and their translator, murakumo, who did a perfect job. Turkish written in kana hurts my brain, and I always check their scans before going "naruhodo!". Go check their Altair blog, it's awesome and has lots of info on the manga and you can find pretty manga artwork there. And after thanking them, go buy the manga in a language you can read, it's very likely licensed in yours.

Now my little inner fangirl will speak: Altair has the finest men and boys. You can't find this many bishounen even in 70s shoujo manga. Even if you don't care about all those battle tactics, you might care about all the bishies! Anyway have this very soft Bayezid to prove my point <3

Can you believe that this is the face of a murderer?

Let me also talk about the art in Shoukoku no Altair: It's gorgeous! That's all I can say. I legit spend minutes looking at the outfits and the accesories. Katou herself said that she was inspired by Turkish jewelry and created Altair. Check this Mahmut swag out:

Shoukoku no Altair is licensed in English by Kodansha, and they are almost up-to-date with Japanese releases. Honestly the best timeline for reading Altair. Go read Altair while waiting for new DoD chapters.

The point about my fandoms: an analysis

Shoukoku no Altair

Too slow for my taste. Wake me up when the war ends. I appreciate the tacticians' point of view but it is not enough to thrill me at any new chapter or raise my expectations.

Akatsuki no Yona

I am here for the family bond. The mean couple is cute and face normal teens communication problems that make me LOL a lot. I have adopted Zeno and want him to find peace in death. Lili bubbling about her crush with Soowon was one of the most hilarious moments in manga I have ever read. This is also the fandom that draw me in Tumblr: I needed a registration to make an ask.

Noragami

I like the shinki world. It is the most original part. I am not so fond of the theme of abuse: Yato taking breaks from his father from time to time, losing the very first person who showed him a different world isn't something unseen or not held better elsewhere. And I adore the drawing style: feminine, vigorous and dynamic, fitting to the story.

Natsume Yuujinchou

At the beginning it was simply a bittersweet story about an orphan with supernatural powers. Now sometimes I get the vibe that it is about mental illness masked as fantasy and I started reading it with a total different mood. And I am here for the mystery about Takashi's grandfather, of course!

Banana Fish

This is the first fandom I have joined when the actual work had already completed its run. The world without mobiles, when people used to read newspapers daily and destroying a roll of film was all you needed to make some photos disappear from this world feels nostalgic. The way it openly sides with the Left and made the politicians of the Right accomplices of the villains is familiar too. And, you know? The romance is the least interesting part to me because both Ash and Eiji come out from dysfunctional lives, their bond is exceptional as their lives is. I have never wished to "have it", like hell! their lives were doomed and they managed to feel love anyway, it was a titans work (kudos!) but I prefer mundane romance between "boring" people in the end.

Chihayafuru

I primarily care for Taichi and Kana-chan. To me it is OK if Chihaya and Taichi won't end up together. I don't think Chihaya deserves Taichi anyway. I feel like she will reject both of them. I just want to find out.

Skip Beat

I genuinely like Kyoko and her struggle with revenge. I hate the microscopic fronts sometimes used in the manga. The anime was one of these that really deserved a second season and never got one.

I am mildly interested in Pet, Vinland Saga, Yakusoku no Neverland, Ajin, Kingdom, FMA, Sailor Moon, Kuroko no Basket, Haikyuu!! Runway de Waratte.

My interest towards  Hōsekisho Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei (The Case Files of Jeweler Richard) is increasing beside the frustration of not being able to read the original story in its gradual development. Still, counts don't exist in England and all the mess about Richard's inheritance is unbelievable... Well, nothing is perfect! But it is enjoyable!

Fate/Grand Order: Babylonia, mostrato in anteprima l’episodio 0 dell’anime

Il nuovo adattamento televisivo tratto dal popolare videogioco andrà in onda questo autunno. 

Durante l’evento Fate/Grand Order Fes. 2019 ~Chaldea Park~  è stato proiettato in anteprima, e a gran sorpresa del pubblico, l’episodio 0 di “Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia” (Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia). La puntata, intitolata “Initium Iter” offre una retrospettiva sui personaggi di Romani e Mash, in vista degli eventi che saranno raccontati nell’adattamento televisivo che andrà in onda ad ottobre.

L’anime sarà basato sulla quest di gioco “Order VII: The Absolute Frontline in the War Against the Demonic Beasts: Babylonia” (Dai Nana Tokuiten Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia) e il cast confermato è quello che trovate di seguito.

GEKIDAN ALTAIR ANIMATE TIMES (11/01/2018) SS: RIDE ON TRANSLATION

A translation of Yosuke’s SS released on the Animate Times website. It’s a pretty cute short story related to his solo song which I have translated over here. It’s my first time translating something like this so if you spot any mistakes or have a better way to word things please do let me know!

Altair Theater Short Story #33: Ride On

【Summary】

Yosuke who has to sing a love song for the solo project. However, being weak at placing feelings like love and affection into his singing, he is at a complete loss in front of the recording waiting for him. It is then, he decides to confide in the other members about his troubles and ask for advice……

【Story】

A certain day in the share room. Yosuke daringly called out to the members. “Pardon me~! Guys, I have something I want to consult you about!!” At the sudden call, all the members relaxing on the sofa looked up with surprised expressions. "……Annoying. Pass." Sakuya, who was sitting a little distance away, lazily heaved the phrase out like a sigh. "Don't say that, please!!" "You're so noisy……" "If we can be of help. Right, Toma?" Yuri smiled gently, but Toma, who was beside him didn't even bother hiding his skeptical expression. "Yosuke-san's wish, it's not something like you want us to give you some of our side dishes for tonight's dinner or……" "It's not!! I'm telling you it's a much more super serious matter!!" "Eh~. If it's serious, then something like love talk?" Toma just said it in a teasing tone but……there was no reply. "Huh?" "Don't tell me……huuh?" "You're kidding." "Whaaat!?!?" "Ah, wait, no!! ...Wait? It's not all that different, is it? No, but, it's wrong!"

  "Love song!?" After they blurted it out in a surprised voice, Yosuke finally cut to the chase. "Yes. A love song. I can't sing it well at all……and the recording for the solo song is in another three days too……"

The words sound shallow; sing it more passionately, delicately, put your feelings into it. Even though he understood it in his head, when he tried to sing with love it just wouldn't go well. (Now that I think about it, even up on stage my acting was very poor, I was told that a lot huh……)

The harder I try, the more the feeling of ‘I'm embarrassed but I'm desperately doing my best!’ ends up showing. I was often told "'I'm enduring the shame' comes across so severely from you that just watching you makes me feel embarrassed." (I know……I wanted to die from shame at my own acting too after all.) Even while watching the video recording, it wasn't something I could just analyze and reflect on.

"But, why are you that embarrassed?" Toma tilted his head curiously. "I mean Yosuke-san, you're always saying how much you like us and love us, aren't you?" "Well yeah. I like you guys after all." "Um. That, I think you can sing it in the same way just like that though……" "Just like that……Just like that……?" I like everyone.

Everybody are like my cute little brothers, my really cool friends, equals I respect. I'm glad it's these members, I might as well just shout it out loud in the middle of the street. (But, that's a given right—?) Isn't love a more special feeling than that? (……But I'll be stumped if you ask me how it's special though) That's right. It's kinda vague, and doesn't have a clear identity. That's why I get lost.

"Think about it more simply." Sakuya said with a sigh, continuing. "You're an idiot so there's no way you can sing while thinking about complicated things, right?" "Uhh...um, Sakuya……I'm begging so could you please be more kind……" "Imagine it. In front of your eyes is the stage." Sakuya declared decisively. "It's a full house, the fans that were waiting for you are looking this way, and all of us are gathered on stage. Underneath the spotlight, what are you thinking of?" "What am I thinking of? That's……" I'm happy. It's so fun and exciting……most of all. (It's precious) I want to embrace all of it.

It's thanks to everyone that I'm here right now. The fans in front of my eyes, as well as the other members. Thank you. I love you all. Even if I shout it until my voice becomes hoarse, for sure, it's still nowhere near enough. "That's fine." By Sakuya's voice, I snapped out of it. "Go sing it with that same feeling." "Huh……? Whaat? No, but, just now was……" "In the past, it seems the Japanese had a lot of trouble translating the word ‘LOVE’, at least that's what I heard." Yuri slowly opened his mouth to speak. "A long time ago, Japan didn't have the notion of ‘falling in love’. It seems it was in the Meiji era that the western world's ‘LOVE’ was translated to ‘Ai (愛)’. But the word ‘Ai (愛)’ itself existed. The feeling that someone was precious was expressed as ‘Kanashi  (愛 (かな) し)’.” [t/n: written with the same kanji as ‘Ai’ but pronounced as ‘kana’.] Unable to see where he was going with this, I tilted my head to the side in confusion, to which Yuri narrowed his eyes and continued. "To Japanese people ‘Love’ is affection, compassion, consideration……isn’t it the feelings of thinking that the other person's soul is precious?" "……Thinking it is precious."

  (If it's feeling like that, then I always) It's something happy, dazzling, and wells up in my chest. (It's special but……but, also very ordinary) It's something that's always next to me.

  "Hey. I always think this but. Yuri-san, don't you think you're a little too well versed in extensive knowledge of Japan……?" "Fufu. Right?" Saying that, Yuri laughed and looked this way.
