Dead Blogging 'Fabricating Modernism' at the Currier Museum
Well the Missus and I trundled up to the Granite State over the weekend to check out the newly installed exhibits at Manchester’s Currier Museum of Art and say, they were swell. We started at Fabricating Modernism: Prints from the School of Paris (through January 7), which features artworks that “constitute a small portion of an extensive collection of prints committed to the Currier Museum of…

F1 drivers as hockey players
Max : center — my first instinct for Max was wing but it’s hard not to compare him with either McDavid or Matthews, except he gets way more PIM than the two of them (less and less as time goes)
Checo : defense - this one writes itself, mister minestry of defense, def always has a place on PK1, will block a ton of shots just like my beloved EJ
Charles : center — I will take no criticism for that one, the bossy vibes from Jonny Toews (Jonny has been getting fucked by Chicago’s management for years, same as Charles with the Ferrari strategists) but Charles gets the Calder
Carlos : wing — you’ve seen this man play football, he’s crafty and talented, dishes assists but can also finish, thinking Pasta or Mitchy Marner or love of my life Mikko Rantanen
George : defense — I swear I’m not going to put every tall guy in D but listen : Cale Makar trajectory, quarterback of PP1, Calder and Norris and Conn Smythe trophy winner
Lewis : center — tell me Lewis is not the Sidney Crosby of F1, that’s it, that’s my full reasonning here
Esteban : center — two-way forward, good at both ends of the ice, I’ll give you Patrice Bergeron as reference (will also accept D as an option here)
Fernando : goalie — look, I know he’s small and would swim in his goalie pads but he’s sturdy and crazy enough to be a goalie, because he’s been here forever, Tukka Rask will be our point of reference
Lando : wing — talented winger who was overviewed in the first round of the draft because of his size but he proves everybody wrong with a 30+ goals season in his 3rd year, think Alex Debrincat
Daniel : wing — I struggled with Daniel because I think he could play any position but the idea of him on Max’s wing really appealed to me, would definitely pull moves in shootouts, let’s go TJ Oshie, he fits the vibes
Valterri : goalie — listen, I just vibe with the idea of it, think maybe Pekka Rinne, also Finnish, I will find Valterri a twink who will call him daddy, that’s not an issue (please tell me who do you think our Juuse Saros could be)
Zhou : wing — crafty winger, speedy with the funny moves, he would try the Michigan against everyone and you know it, a Trevor Zegras (in spirit, although Z did play wing too in the past)
Kevin : defense — steady sturdy d-man, gives me Duncan Keith in his prime
Mick : wing — look, I know Michael would be Gretzky but I bring to you : the Schumacher/Tkachuk comparison and Mick as Matthew, don’t tell me Mick in his villain era wouldn’t get hella PIM while scoring hella points
Pierre : center — Pierre screams forward to me and I’ll have him at center, the idea of him and Charles centering the first two lines of a team and being on the PP together is pretty to me, I think bitchy Pierre could challenge bitchy Geno but in terms of style he’s probably more of a Nico Hischier
Yuki : defense — Sam Girard, just imagine Yuki doing the tornade, yes, perfect, that’ll be it
Sebastian : center — I could see current Sebastian as a goalie but Red Bull/villain Seb was definitely a forward who would win the Art Ross/Hart/Ted Lindsay in one year and play on a broken ankle in the playoffs like one fellow countryman Leon Draisaitl (which means I also accept winger as a position)
Lance : wing — I do not know what to do with Lance so I put him at wing, maybe he can be like a 3rd liner or a 4th liner grinder, he gets Garnet Hathaway
Alex : defense — Alex/George d-pair!!! they would be so good, Heddy would never die his hair red but think of Alex as Victor Hedman kind of solid
Nicky : center — the fact that I struggled with the Canadians of the grid is terrible, sorry hockey, but he can grind with Lance, Nic Dowd it is

HARTFORD WOLF PACK BEAT THE TORONTO MARLIES IN OT
Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Jake Leschyshyn had an assist and a late goal, and the overtime winner at 1:12 propelled the Hartford Wolf Pack to a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Toronto Marlies. The win was the Pack's fifth straight and in their last non-conference opponent of the season. “We're happy to get two points out of that (game). It’s a big game for us standings-wise. Coming down the stretch, every game is huge for us," Leschyshyn said. "Libor made a huge play for us on the goal. He got out in front, and I got the first shot off. It wasn’t a great shot. It's kind of opened things up and I was able to put the second one past him.” Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch was all smiles post-game. "The line he and Blidh have been on has just gotten better and better and that showed at the end of the game." The already python-like playoff squeeze was made even tighter as the Bridgeport Islanders won a controversial game on Tuesday morning in OT over the Springfield Thunderbirds, who were last year’s Calder Cup runner-up. This now sets up a monumental game Friday night between Bridgeport and Hartford. Following a Wolf Pack 2000 Calder Cup championship Celebration Night, the game will be played with ten former players in the house, including the former captain and head coach Ken Gernander. Since being sent down, Lechyshyn has found some hockey nirvana in Hartford. “It's the first time coming to a team (traded) in my pro career. The guys have been so helpful, created the chemistry we needed and now we have to not take a step back, and it’s good to get the ice time. I think I have had a good opportunity with more ice time here in all situations that I did combined its all the other places I played (this year)," remarked Leschyshyn. In the third period, after some pinball-like play, where the Pack struggled to get the puck out of the zone, the Marlies' Kyle Clifford found the puck and had an open chance on the right wing but hit the post at 1:53. Keith Petruzzelli squared on Tim Gettinger, took away the short side as a shooting option, and stopped him at 3:42. Toronto’s Graham Slagggert followed with an inadvertent high stick on Ty Emberson behind the net and went to the penalty box. After the refs checked to see if there was blood, and when there was none, he went for a two-minute minor. It opened the door for the Wolf Pack. While shorthanded, the Marlies Pontus Holmberg got around Ryan Carpenter, but netminder Louie Domingue moved right across the top of the crease to stay with him and make the save at 10:46. The Wolf Pack finally broke the scoreless duel late in the third. After solid board work and puck possession by Tanner Fritz and Lauri Pajuniemi, Emberson sent a good low shot from the right point. Leschyshyn got to the rebound first and was stopped. Anton Blidh got a second crack at the puck and put his 12th of the season past Petruzzelli with just 1:12 left in regulation. “It was similar to the goal we had in Toronto. Late in the game. A last second tying goal to force overtime. It was a good all-around effort by everybody to get that goal,” remarked Leschyshyn. The Marlies are holders of the league's fifth-best record. They demonstrated why, showing no quit. With Petruzelli pulled, the Marlies' Alex Steeves had a great chance with 32 seconds left to tie it from the right-wing side, but Domingue made a 10-bell save. “He’s one of those guys we lean on, maybe a little too much sometimes. We got rewarded with his play tonight with a win,” said Leschyshyn. With 12.2 seconds left, they managed to tie the game. Topi Niemelä registered his first goal of the season when he picked up the rebound of Steeves' shot and buried it to force extra time. “It was a tough game all night for both teams to get real good chances and find open ice. There wasn’t a lot going on for much of the game at times. We stuck with it, stayed patience and it paid off for us by persevering,” commented Leschyshyn. LINES: Cullye-Leschyshyn-Brodzinski Gettinger-Lockwood-Carpenter Fritz-Pajuniemi-Blidh Elson-Henriksson-Trivigno Jones-Emberson Hájek-Scanlin Clendening-Kalynuk Domingue Garand SCRATCHES: Matt Rempe (Healthy) Blake Hillman (Healthy) Adam Edström #34 (Healthy) Brett Berard (Healthy) Adam Sýkora  #29 (Healthy) Bryce McConnell-Barker #8 (Healthy) Matt Robertson (Upper-body, Week-To-Week - Could be ready for the playoffs) Patrick Khordorenko (Season-ending shoulder surgery). C.J. Smith (Hip surgery, Done for the season) NOTES: The Marlies are coached by ex-Pack captain/Sound Tiger/Springfield Falcon Greg Moore. He has been at the helm for a year and a half. Former UCONN forward Ryan Tverberg just signed his NHL ELC deal with the Maple Leafs. His Marlies ATO deal came two weeks ago. he will be forgoing his senior season at Storrs. He was a scratch for the game. The other CT connection is G Keith Petruzzelli (Quinnipiac University). His alma mater is in the Frozen Four in Tampa Bay against Michigan Thursday night; the ETA of the game is 8:30 pm on ESPN. The NHL parent Toronto Maple Leafs recalled forwards Nick Abbruzzese and Wayne Simmonds on emergency recall. Off to St. John’s, Newfoundland (ECHL) are Todd Skirvington, Matt Hellickson, and Jack Badini (Old Greenwich). Jonny, Brodzinski was the second Wolf Pack this year to win an in-season AHL award as AHL Player of the Month for March. Cayden Primeau, son ex-Whaler Keith, was recalled again from the Laval Rocket to the parent Montreal Canadiens. Springfield signed Garrett Sparks after being sent back to Orlando (ECHL) as St. Louis recalled Vadim Zherenko. So too, was defenseman Matt Kessel. Lehigh Valley gets Samuel Ersson back in goal from Philly, sitting in for Connor Hart. He was suspended from the Canadian National Team with the WJC team because of a sexual assault incident that happened years ago. The claim was settled with the Canadian WJC team and, in turn, sent Pat Nagle back to the Reading Royals (ECHL). Peter DiLiberatore, is reassigned to Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Jon Gillies (Salisbury School) continues his shuttle between Columbus and Cleveland. Luke Stevens (Yale University-ECACHL) is reassigned to Kansas City (ECHL) by Coachella Valley Firebirds. CHICAGO WOLVES The Chicago Wolves sent a press release to all agents of minor league players yesterday that they will operate as an independent team next year, jettisoning Carolina after just two years. They aren't any more independent teams in the AHL. The last two were the Worcester (MA) Ice Cats in their first season under the late Roy Boe in 1993-94. The 1991 New Haven Nighthawks were the other. Worcester is no longer in the AHL. It’s now an ECHL city and long gone. The Nighthawks were comprised of Quebec Nordiques (nee Colorado Avalanche) farm hands and free agents. Dual affiliations are a thing of the past too. The Charlotte Checkers were being split by the Florida Panthers and Seattle Krakken last year while the new building in the California desert was being built. This was the first one since the ill-fated, two-year experiment called the Beast of New Haven in the late ’90s, which Carolina and Florida shared. Chicago has had four affiliations in the last seven years. They have had a tough going with every NHL affiliate. Several years ago, a St. Louis organizational source said, “We'll never go back there. We rather be in Mexico City than deal with them!” The owner of the defending Calder Cup Champion Wolves is Donald Levin; he likes winning titles and entertaining fans. He has the money to do this. This divorce comes two years earlier than was expected. It's been reported to be difficult to deal with  Tom Dundon of the Carolina Hurricanes since he brought the team from Peter Karmanos. CARON BRIERE Caron Brière, the eldest son of current Flyer GM and a former Springfield Falcon, Daniel Brière, was dismissed from his second NCAA team. Mercyhurst University (Erie, PA) (AHA) did so for his despicable actions in knocking an unoccupied wheelchair down a long flight of stairs to a bathroom area of a local Erie nightclub. The act was caught on a video surveillance camera and posted on Twitter. Brière was dismissed before even playing a game for Arizona State University (NCAA Independent). World Masters Cross Country Championships preview part 3
With statistical assistance from Scott Lawrence
There are now just five days until runners and fans converge upon Bathurst for the World Cross Country Championships. My previews have focussed on the Masters 6k races because the 2k relay teams largely remain a mystery to me. But a few enquiries have revealed some interesting pairings. In the 40+ division, it has been confirmed that Ben Bruce and April Lund (USA) will run as a team and they should clean up. Steve Dinneen and Anna Kasapis are the strongest Aussie pairing, followed by Nathan Crowley and Nicole Joseph. These four runners are all from Victoria and I'm not aware of any teams from other States that might challenge them.
(L to R) Dinneen, Kasapis, Crowley, Joseph
Tumblr media
In the 50+ category, Steve Moneghetti has thrown the cat among the pigeons by dropping down from his 60+ age group to team up with Krishna Stanton. A clever move from the master of Masters! But I fancy the chances of Victorian duo, John Meagher and Julie Norney, who have an age advantage over this all-star pair. In a remarkable coincidence, Krishna and Julie ran identical times in their most recent parkruns (18:56), so will Mona have the speed over 2k to beat his younger rival? I am going out on a limb and tipping an upset by the younger team. Ant Rickards and Bev Thomas (also Vic) are the likely third team on the podium. Krishna's presence should at least prevent a Victorian sweep of the medals.
(L to R top) Moneghetti, Stanton, Meagher
(L to R bottom) Norney, Rickards, Thomas
Tumblr media
Now we return to the 6k individual cross country and the top 60+ and 65+ prospects. There are only three overseas M60 entries and it's a shame that most of the best runners in this age group appear to have preferred to enter the World Indoor Track Championships in Poland next month. Nonetheless, the field remains of high quality. Mona, fresh from his 5000m world track record, is the hottest of red-hot favourites. In an ominous sign for his rivals, when asked recently about the upcoming race, Mona simply volunteered: "I like cross country", four words carrying a very clear message to his rivals, among whom will be Bruce Graham (ACT), the winner of numerous Masters track titles over many years, and Derek Froude, a two time Olympian for New Zealand but now representing the USA. Craig Downie (Tas) is another elite runner, with recent times of 10:08/17:47 for 3000m/parkrun to his name. Gary Mayor (Qld) ran 17:35 for 5000m last year and so is also a chance for a medal.
(L to R) Graham, Froude, Downie, Mayor
Tumblr media
The W60 field is not nearly as strong and has no foreign runners, so is a de facto Australian Championships. Victoria Gunn (Tas), or Vicky to her friends, ran 21:06 and scored an age grading over 90% at the Launceston parkrun last year, which probably makes her (what else?) a gun runner. Robyn Basman (NSW) has a similar 5000m time from 2022. Anne Lord (Vic) is a four-time Australian World Cross Country representative. The other runners have little or no form on the board, so there could easily be a surprise win here from someone sneaking under my radar.
(L to R) Gunn, Basman
Tumblr media
How good it would have been to see the two outstanding M65 runners in the world going head to head in Bathurst? But alas, it's not to be, as NSW's own Keith Bateman and Scotland's Alistair Walker are both skipping the event, unfortunately. This leaves Allan Long (formerly NT, now Vic) as the clear favourite. Ian Calder (NZ) and Peter Hutton (NSW) are experienced Masters competitors and should both be in the mix. In the W65 age group, Rosemary Roediger (NSW) has a strong claim with recent parkrun times just beyond 21 minutes and consistent 90%+ age gradings, but New Zealander Christine Adamson will be close by. Great Britain and Northern Ireland's Margaret Phillips boasts an impressive 441 parkruns to date, but she cannot match the speed of Rosemary or Christine. Helen Stanley (Vic) is another respected Masters competitor. Calder and Adamson will be a chance to win the 60+ 2k relay if they team up, although the younger pair of Downie and Gunn could conceivably take the gold medals back with them to Tasmania.
(L to R) Calder, Hutton, Adamson, Stanley
Tumblr media
I hope that you are enjoying these event previews. The final episode in these series will look at the 70+, 75+ and 80+ divisions, where the race distance drops to 4k. Until then, keep on running!

Netflix’s One Night in Miami – an Idealized Meeting of Icons – Debuts Jan. 15
Tumblr media
  Edited by Naomi Richard
On the evening of February 25, 1964, four icons of sports, entertainment and activism celebrated one of the greatest upsets in boxing history in a modest motel room in Miami. After claiming the World Heavyweight title for the first time, Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) — who would soon change his name to Muhammad Ali — got together with three friends: human rights activist Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), music superstar Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and football legend and emerging action-movie hero Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge).
One Night In Miami… is a fictional imagining of the historic night these towering figures spent together. Unbeknownst to the others, Malcolm X, who is about to embark on a bold new undertaking that will put him in grave personal danger, has arranged the gathering in the hope of winning Clay’s support. As the evening progresses in surprising ways, the four men engage in passionate debate about their roles as celebrities and leaders at a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement.
Tumblr media

Directed by Academy Award-winner Regina King and written by Kemp Powers based on his award-winning play, One Night In Miami is set on the verge of the momentous political and cultural upheaval of the 1960s.  Today, more than 50 years later, the vital urgency of these trailblazers’ conversations — about racial injustice, about what it means to be successful as a person of color, and concerning the social responsibilities that come with that success — still resonate.
One Night In Miami also stars Joaquina Kalukango, Nicolette Robinson, Beau Bridges and Lance Reddick. The producers are Jess Wu Calder, Keith Calder and Jody Klein. Executive producers are Regina King, Kemp Powers, Paul O. Davis and Chris Harding.

The idea for his play came to Kemp Powers when he learned that after Cassius Clay’s first defeat of Sonny Liston, the 22-year-old Clay went back to the Hampton House Motel in Overtown, Florida — an oasis for African Americans visiting segregated Miami — where he spent an evening in conversation with friends Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown.
“It was just one paragraph in a book I was reading about the intersection of sports and the Civil Rights Movement, but it kind of blew my mind,” recalls Powers. “I had to go back and read it a few more times. And then I couldn’t get it out of my mind. After all, these were four of my heroes.”
Powers says he became obsessed with learning everything he could about how these four men knew each other and why they converged in Malcolm X’s motel room that night. He read multiple biographies and dug up interviews to understand who they were and what their connection was.  Powers reasoned, “The more I learned about them, the more it seemed natural they would have been drawn to one another. They were unapologetic in their art. They were unapologetic in their political beliefs. And in the early 1960s to be a free, unapologetic Black man was quite a rarity.”
Don’t miss this Netflix Classic set for release January 15, 2021, and for more information visit www.onenightinmiami.movie.
