Animation and Motion Design Elective:
Task 3: Story board.
A bodysuit with moderate number of keleidoscope on the front attachment of the body suit, taking time to flutter before flying off the frame leaving the bodysuit behind.
Shot 1: Moderate number of kaleidoscope on the front attachment of the bodysuit.
Shot 2: Repetition of shot one but with the butterflies fluttering.
Shot 3: The butterflies flying out of the frame.
Shot 4: The butterflies still finding their way out of the frame.
Shot 5: The bodysuit with only few butterflies left.
Shot 6: The main bodysuit with no attachment.

Important Features of Motion Graphics:
What is Motion Graphics:
‘Motion Graphics are text, graphics, or a combination of both that move in time and space and use rhythm and movement to communicate’ - Gallagher and Paldy
Motion Graphics are currently being used for many different purposes throughout media. Television commercials, educational videos and in recent years advertisements on social media, often include motion graphic sequences.
Television Advertisements use motion graphics to communicate extremely regularly, due to the very efficient way motion graphics can show the relevant information, while additionally being in a design style that fits the advertiser’s brand or product.

Motion graphics are also used in education. Educational videos use motion graphics due to its simplistic style. The simple movement keeps an audience’s attention while also teaching them. The motion graphics’ movement can also be used as a demonstration, using visuals to instruct an audience.

Symmetry
Symmetry is used in motion graphics more many reasons.
It is often used as a way to show something unrealistic.
‘Symmetry is a very obvious form of composition, which of course offers opportunities but at the same time can cause a situation to seem artificial, stilted, and thus shatter the illusion of the fiction. This is possibly the reason that a lot of filmmakers try to avoid symmetry.’ - Louis Thonsgaard, (Symmetry - the Forbidden Fruit of Picture Composition in Film)
The artificial look symmetry coveys can be something some artists want. Most of the time, motion graphics is not about making something that looks realistic.
Kaleidoscopes:
Kaleidoscopes are optical instruments that use mirrors to show a symmetrical pattern of whatever you are looking at.
The Rook Title sequence:
Use of mirrored Live action clips all in one frame, they may do this to make it look more interesting. It’s different and that works with the fact that this is for a psychological thriller.
Very fast pace, this also works with the fact that its a thriller.
SYNC max Hattler:
Symmetrical lines moving in a circle, looks like a car’s wheel. Gives a hypnotizing feeling.
The movements work well with the sound, it’s almost like the movement is making the sound.
The sequence slowly gets more and more detailed.
My own creation:
After Effects has a kaleidoscopic effect that you can add to any composition. Here is a a kaleidoscopic video I created in After Effects:
I created this by:
Opening an empty composition in After Effects.
Using the shape tool to create a square shape and changing the anchor point so that it is in the middle of the square.
Using the effect to make the shape repeat its self.
I edited the repeated squares so that they were places in a straight line.
I then animated the squares so that they would move around the screen.
I then pre composed the animation and added the keleidoscope effect to the composition.
I then went back to the squares and change the keyframes until i was happy with the finished kaleidoscope.
Type:
Being able to manipulate type as if it’s a shape is so important in motion graphics.
I created this:
I did this by:
Opening an empty composition in After Effects.
Using the type tool to type my name. I then typed it over and over until one line of it filled the frame.
I then pre composed it so it was able to be manipulated as a shape.
I then coped the line of text and pasted it above and below the original line, so that my name now filled the screen.
I then used the sphere effect so that the text looked like it was in the shape of a sphere.
I edited the keyframes of the rotation so that it rotated at the speed i wanted it to .
I then added a blue background and made the text green, using the colour corrector effect.
I then pre composed this and used the shape tool to crop out the background, so that the blue was only shown on the sphere.
I then used a blur effect and used keyframes to blur the sphere for the first few seconds.
I then added a new black background and added a star effect to it.
I then made the layers, 3D layers and added a camera.
I then moved the layers in the 3D space so that the sphere is quite far infront from the star background and so that the start background is larger.
I then keyframed the camera to move forward.
Painting With Light:
Painting with light is the technique of using a camera, changing the settings to have a low ISO and a low shutter speed to take 1 image that is captured over many seconds. As the iso is low it allows the camera to only capture really bright lights. By setting up a camera in a dark room, you can then use a torch to draw anything.
Examples:
You can create a sequence of photos and then edit them together to create an animation.
I created this:
It is a very simple edit, but i made it mostly to practice/learn. If i was to do this again i would edit it so the hearts change with the beat of the music.
We worked in groups. I came up with the idea of sticking diffrent colours of translucent paper to a see through glass board:
We then drew a heart of the glass board. Then we took the long exposure photos while using different lights and tracing the drawn heart.
Here are the photos we took:
I took these photos into premeire pro and edited contrast so that the backgrounds couldn’t be seen as clearly, as some of the photos had too high an iso.
After adjusting the contrast i then cropped the hearts out and edited them to make a cool sequence.
I then added music to the video. I often download music from youtubes audio library as the music is copyright free. The music I used is called ‘Forever young’ by Otis McDonald
