villanelle and autism

side notes before i begin:

some of these traits could also be explained by cluster b disorders, as she’s heavily bpd coded and canonically aspd, but i see her as both cluster b AND autistic.

also, please don’t say things like “YES she’s not a psychopath, she’s autistic instead” because she’s still very much aspd and i don’t want to take that away. i’ve seen a lot of people with aspd really identify with villanelle and say she portrays it well.

just scroll if you don’t agree, this is a harmless headcanon and i’m simply explaining why i have this headcanon, as well as why a lot of autistic people seem to relate to her (people get SO mad if you even insinuate a popular character might be autistic lol)

masking/mirroring

masking is a strategy used to hide neurodivergent traits in order to blend in with neurotypicals. this can include mirroring (mimicking others expressions/behaviors), or even entire persona changes.

in the very first scene villanelle carefully observes a man smiling then mimics his smile (1x01)

villanelle hears a woman laugh on the radio then mimics her laugh, later she reuses that same laugh with sebastian (1x02)

liked copying the statue people in the street (2x05)

often mimics konstantin and predicts what he’s going to say

can quickly switch personas, adopts different accents and dialects quickly, and reuses phrases that are said to her

taking things literally

when talking about villanelle anna says “she was quite literal” and goes on to describe how villanelle misinterpreted a joke so confidently that she killed someone because of it (1x07)

interprets the bible extremely literally in season 4

“i have children” “i don’t want your children” (1x05)

“sheep are happier than wolves” “you spend your time off surveying sheep?” (3x08)

took konstantin saying “do something normal” literally (1x02)

“you are not a pumpkin, you a beautiful” (1x04)

kills gabriel because she thought he was genuinely asking to die when he was expressing how sad he was about his situation (2x01)

sensory seeking (& sensitivities)

touches and focuses on the texture of the liliana rizzari duvet, goes out of her way to ask the man she’s killing for the name of the duvet, later purchases it for herself and carefully feels the texture of it again (1x01)

generally touches and smells everything

“i want to smell her skin” (4x03) as well as her describing her ideal perfume in detail then asking eve and konstantin to smell her (3x03)

hates wearing crocs and other “non-nice” things, is very fixated on “nice” things like high quality clothes and food

makes people stroke her hair when she’s feeling upset (2x05 and 4x01)

bold fashion with a lot of colors/patterns/textures

seems to dislike most people hugging her

more up to interpretation, but she wore headphones in 3x04 and 3x05, once while she was having a meltdown on a train

struggles with social cues

includes coming off as blunt/rude, trouble navigating groups, and not interpreting situations correctly

how awkward and blunt she was at her wedding (3x01)

interacting with the church, especially in 4x02

doesn’t know how to react to displays of emotion (gabriel crying, benita crying, was confused and froze when her brother was being affectionate)

doesn’t understand why some people are upset with her (konstantin in s2, may in s4, eve at multiple points)

doesn’t understand that certain things will make people upset (being very blunt with gabriel then being put off when he starts crying)

struggles with understanding boundaries

doesn’t see authority figures as an authority (teasing and flirting with the prison guards, threatening konstantin, casually killing anton, doesn’t seem to understand consequences)

does not follow rules that don’t make sense to her

breaks into eve’s house expecting a normal dinner, doesn’t know how to calm eve down and ends up making her panic more (1x05)

didn’t understand why eve’s coworkers were acting scared of her (3x08)

is confused as to why sebastian laughs when she says she likes national anthems (1x02)

soooo many instances that again i can’t list them all…

alexithymia

alexithymia is the difficulty feeling or identifying emotions (or physical stressors like pain)

her whole aa meeting speech in 2x06 about how she feels nothing and the distress it causes (is extremely bored, hurts herself and it doesn’t hurt, just wants to feel something)

doesn’t know if she’s telling the truth or not (2x07), this could also be because of masking as too much masking can cause identity confusion, not knowing what you’re faking and what’s authentic

weakened sense of danger, even says “i don’t get scared” (2x08)

says she’s fine then immediately collapses (2x01)

other traits

meltdowns, especially at the end of 3x05 where she was wearing headphones and had increased stimming while crying

low empathy

attaches to and fixates on a specific person, obsession prone

REJECTION SENSITIVE DYSPHORIA

has always felt estranged and inherently different from others, “i’m not normal you know” (2x01)

detail oriented, notices things others don’t

bad at dancing/rhythm

differences in expressing emotions and communication

I'm trying so hard to love this series but the tone is just all over the place. Very inconsistent. I have no doubt it was Disney meddling. Sofia should use her new sexy evil latin spells on them next.

The Patient (with mum) 1x10 The Cantor's Husband (Finale)

For Sam, an unexpected decision shows progress towards his goals, but Dr. Strauss demands even more.

An interesting character study. To say it's mostly two actors in one room, it was never boring. The underlying threat throughout and the feeling of impending doom (but for who?). A satisfy watch.

Killing Eve (Remix) [x] 3x09 She's Gone and Unbelievably I Survived

4x07 - Villanelle accompanies Gunn on a hunting trip. The two exchange stories and kiss. The next day V rejects Gunn and attempts to leave the island. Meanwhile, after karaoke Yusuf leaves Eve. She visits Martin for guidance. Eve then travels to the island and is ambushed by Gunn. Eve blinds her during their struggle, and she and V escape the island.

The elation of the fandom to see V/Jodie passionately kissing a woman vs the devastation that it wasn't Eve/Sandra. Also, I tacked on the beginning of 4x08 too so that the road trip ep is just them together in love.

Merlin 2x11 The Witch's Quickening

Mordred brings a warlock, Alvarr, to see Morgana, and they persuade her to steal a crystal with magical properties from the vaults of Camelot.

Why is Merlin so surprised that Morgana wants to help Mordred?? No one in the castle ever listens to her or explains what is happening and she is actively punished and manipulated for being gay magical.

Some of the things I love about HotD so far (1x01-1x05):

No map table at Dragonstone - it's not needed like Stannis needed it, the Targaryens had already conquered Westeros and ruled it

How sexist Westeros is (not that I love the sexism obviously but I appreciate them staying true to the history GRRM wrote and showing how horribly women were treated all in the same breath)

The convo with Daemon and his mistress - especially the lines "I came to you for liberation." "Liberated from what?" "Fear." - they really put that little parallel in there to Dany

Rhaenyra and Rhaenys each - The Heir and The Queen That Never Was - both heavily affected by the misogyny/sexism of the time

Going back to politics and there's already a good build up

Dragons and the bond (I hope we get to see more in depth about this though, we haven't seen too much of the dragons themselves yet)

Daemon though I am not a fan of his (Matt Smith is phenomenal!!!)

the Targaryen sense of saving the world - ngl this annoyed me at first because it felt like it retconned the Starks/the Night's Watch/the North but it actually makes total sense, the Targaryens would have naturally thought they were the only ones that could save the world, it's very in character for that house, and this is their story/Rhaenyra's POV

"In those days, House Targaryen stood at the height of its strength, with 10 adult dragons under its yoke. No power in the world could stand against it." - love this line from the intro voiceover in episode 1 because it drives the point home that not only are the dragons used for power (and how the Targaryens hold it) but also that the dragons are under their control by using the word 'yoke'

14 succession claims heard -> only came down to 2 (GRRM likes to use #'s, especially #3, so this has to tie in somehow)

"For he knew the truth. The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon was itself." - absolute truth! what a great line!

9th year of Viserys' reign (again with the #'s, something has to tie in here)

love the score - more majestic and awe-inspiring when it comes to the dragons (I see you, Ramin)

love the dragonpit at its height (and noticed its one of the highest points in the city outside of the Red Keep), also love how dragons can fly overhead while people walk the streets of KL and no one reacts (not only are they used to it but Rhaenyra is not Daenerys - purposeful shot)

Alicent is dressed like Sansa would have been (pre-marriage) - Rhaenyra like Daenerys - "That's almost large enough to saddle two" "I'm quite content as a spectator, thank you"; "You want him to have a son?" "I want to fly with you on dragonback, see the great wonders across the narrow sea, and eat only cake." "I'm being serious." "I never jest about cake." "You aren't worried about your position?" "I like this position. It's quite comfortable."

love the shot of the gate that leads into the Red Keep (it's like we're picking up where we left off but showing us before the ruin of the city to show us how different this story will be in itself - same with the courtyard shot)

the music once again is brimming with life, it's just so different to GoT and you really get a different feel, that it's a different time, different reign, Ramin's genius strikes again

love the council meeting room and table, definitely a different room used, with that view; and again ties into House Targaryen being at the height of their power (the GoT council room/table was in a different room that also had a view but not as high)

the Triarchy killing pirates - Viserys: "And are we meant to weep for dead pirates?" - kind of gave me deja vu with a different vibe of that 8x05 scene with Dany and Tyrion ("They're hostages." "They are. In a tyrant's grip. Whose fault is that? Mine?" -> the whole 'evil men' thing) not to mention the Triarchy made me think of the Sons of the Harpy

love the cast, especially Milly, Matt, Emily, Eve, Steve, Savannah, and Rhys

after Rhaenyra says she'd rather be a knight than have children in the scene with her mom, she goes to be the royal cup bearer in the council meeting and listen in/learn; in the godswood it has alicent asking Rhaenyra about Nymeria -> I'm getting strong Arya vibes

the Iron Throne is massive - love the throne room

Alicent's "green" scene in 1x05 - right there is a queen (and I swear I get a mixture of Cersei/Margaery/Sansa vibes from her in this moment)

Milly and Alicent (along with Matt and the incredible cast as well as the writing) really crushed it and invested me into this show - I will miss these two tremendously and I hope Emma and Olivia are just as mystifying to watch (I'm sure they will be)

for killing eve:

5. 1x07

in this episode we see eve investigating anna, and because of that we see a glimpse into vil’s past and how her mind works. while i love those moments, i think there’s a lot to be said about eve’s mind set here too - we see her actively making decisions that are harmful to herself and the operation. but eve doesn’t care about that, she’s self serving and she wants villanelle. she wants to know everything about villanelle. she’s doing everything to get her

4. 1x08

i love season two so fucking much, but i know if the show ended here, i would’ve been happy. i liked seeing eve’s conflict of stabbing villanelle and then immediately regretting it. whether it came from a place of guilt or traditional ‘right and wrong’ that got to her is definitely up for debate, but i’ll always love reckless selfish sadistic eve

3. 2x08

the whole scene of eve killing raymond and axing his shoulder fucking kills me. i love seeing vil ask eve if she’s okay and eve completely stonewall her and insist that she’s fine. eve doesn’t like talking about her feelings, she’d much rather get on with life without the added bullshit of dealing with emotions too. villanelle’s possessiveness really shines through in the final scenes of this episode also - ‘you’re mine’ to shooting her in the back after she felt betrayed was delicious

2. 1x05

this and number one are soo neck and neck with each other. i’ll always have a soft spot for vil holding eve’s knife against her throat and eve being so clearly turned on by it. whether she knew it then or not, eve wanted villanelle in her entirety. she liked being scared of her- she wanted to be scared of her

everything? kills me. actually kills me!! villaneve kitchen scenes are unmatched and i could talk about them for hours. villanelle learns a lot about eve during this episode- the disregard she has for own life being one of them. she already knows that eve is like her, but she tests her during this episode. villanelle seeks out eve’s reactions throughout their scenes together and comes to her own - mostly correct - assumptions about eve’s character

for hannibal i don’t have favourite episodes but i do have several moments that kill me dead
