#kudos to her for being so accepting of her mother's relationship!

I swear I try not to comment stuff every time I watch an episode of Golden Girls, but they make it so hard. Take this conversation between Rose and her daughter Kirsten from S1E16 The Truth Will Out:
"Well, I thought, why would anyone who could afford to be totally independent want to live with someone else?" "Kirsten, I think there's something I should explain." "You don't have to, Mom. I understand perfectly. Meeting Blanche and Dorothy explains everything."
Like, come on. Kirsten obviously thinks they're romantically involved. This has to be intentionally cryptic.

My Happy Marriage Season 2 Future Storyline
Now that Season 2 of My Happy Marriage has been confirmed, I have a pretty good idea about what to expect for the upcoming season in the new year.
Season 1 focused on the Light Novel Vols 1-2, introducing the main characters, concept and love story. Aside from introducing the basics, the main storyline was how several different families whether the Saimori, Usaba or Tatsuishi's were trying to tear Miyo and Kiyoka apart for their own benefits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a safe bet that Season 2 will focus on Vols 3-4 where Miyo and Kiyoka face new challenges and milestones for their relationship.
Volume 3 focuses on Miyo and Kiyoka visiting the Kudo family estate and finally the long awaited introduction of Kiyoka's parents. During this time, Miyo is trying to gain the acceptance and approval of her future mother-in-law which is easier said than done. Meanwhile, this family visit also serves as a business trip for Kiyoka, who must take care of a new threat on the horizon.
Volume 4 focuses on Miyo being targeted by a new antagonist, Naoshi Usui who has a connection to her late mother. To be kept safe, Miyo must now accompany Kiyoka to work and Kaoruko, a female bodyguard has been assigned to protect her. Now Miyo must deal with a threat on her life, sexism and... jealousy when Kaoruko is revealed to be one of Kiyoka's previous marriage candidates!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've read these stories and they are REALLY good so I'm happy to see they'll officially come to life in the anime next year. This is gonna be good. I can't wait for season 2 and I'm especially looking forward to all the new major milestones in store for Miyo and Kiyoka's love story. Trust me, you won't want to miss it!

4 years of Druck s3 - week 7
Things of note in this episode:
1.  This is probably my favourite episode and so this is likely to be lengthy!
Tumblr media
2.  I really love how this conversation with Hans differs from the og.  In a lot of ways I prefer this one, unlike the one in episode 5.  In this, first, Matteo says ‘if it makes you happy’ he’ll call him his guru and I love that change in the dynamic.  Plus, I really do love that Hans is attuned enough to religion that he takes Matteo into church to have this conversation (and so Matteo’s mother does in a way see him in church that day).  I think it’s very important that a lot of Matteo’s issues about all this stem from religion and so taking him into a place of religion to demystify it is so important.  Also, Hans’s advice about David isn’t that he’s probably playing Matteo (as Eskild suggests to Isak), but that he’s probably not out and needs time and respect for that or to be left alone.  It resonates in a different way, and the fact that this religious breakthrough happens at Easter is a really lovely touch.  Plus we get the whole bit about Matteo’s mother, and he’s able to come to terms with her and her issues in a way that leaves him much calmer and more at peace.  Compare the above picture to this one from the start of the episode:
Tumblr media
This earlier Matteo was so sad and he was at seas and all confused.  But at least he knew that going to Hans would help - and was able to do it even when Hans had been so upset with him before.  And kudos to Hans for seeing past all that and recognising that Matteo genuinely does need a gay guru and being that person for him.  This conversation has done exactly what Matteo needed it to and he’s so much happier and more at ease both with the David thing and with his mother.
Tumblr media
3.  Speaking of religion, this whole bit with Amira is a) so lovely and b) so important.  After their previous discussion, this has needed to be addressed and she does it in such a gracious way - which he returns.  I do think that without the chat with Hans he may have been less keen to hear what Islam thinks about homosexuality but together these two conversations have really helped him unpack some of his prejudices about religion, and he is far more willing and able to open up to hi9s mother with the hope that she won’t reject him.  I absolutely love that ‘for Easter’ Amira’s family has made some food to share, thus showing Matteo that religion can be open and accepting of other faiths, cultures and lifestyles.  Amira doesn’t just tell him she and her religion accept him, she shows him and it’s very powerful.  Even if her bringing outside food into a cafe worries me, since you’re absolutely not allowed to do it here.
Tumblr media
4.  I really love the colours in this episode - they’re so much warmer and more cheerful than the previous ones.  Partly that’s because this was Easter and the colours work really well for that time of year.  But also because Matteo is starting to warm up and open up into his new self.  I am, once again, so impressed by the way light and colour is used in this show.  It’s just soooo goooooood.
I also love how much Carlos has grown - Kiki has such strong views and she wants everyone to agree with them.  In a lot of her life, people just don’t (I imagine Zoe must be such a stress for her, for example), but Carlos, who has been shown as a bit of a lad and quite ignorant and occasionally offensive, has taken it all on board and you can see it in the way he acts and the things he says now.  He enjoys his new knowledge and certainly has a lot of sensitivity to people and their relationships.  He’s the one who knew things were off with Matteo and Sara, and he’s the one who moves to listen actively to Matteo here and who says things he hopes are supportive and encouraging.
Tumblr media
5.  Sara.  This poor kid.  We see here the culmination of everything that’s been going wrong in her life and it must have been so hard seeing Matteo in the midst of all this.  But I like to think that she feels lighter and happier after this is done.  We do know what she reaches out to Leonie after Matteo suggests that talking to people helps.  If we compare this picture of her to the way she was shown in s1 and even 2, she’s so diminished, shot from above and looks so weak and vulnerable.  Even compared to the social media post she made wearing this exact outfit, she looks different.  But it’s maybe like a wound being lanced - like Matteo she was trying to put up a facade, live a fake life in that earlier post.  But now she’s able to be real and yeah that hurts but it’s better and they will both be able to move on and be happier more authentic people in the aftermath.
Tumblr media
6.  Speaking of hurting - Matteo makes so much great progress this episode and he’s able to become a happier and more settled person.  But at the core is this boy who misses the boy he thought he was creating something nice with.  He told Hans he ‘can’t believe’ that David doesn’t want him and I think that makes this even harder.  The pictures and videos David sends are sending him mixed messages.  On one hand, he’s keeping up the contact and trying to maintain something with Matteo - on the other, this stuff is all ‘it’s not you it’s me’ ‘in a different life we’d be in Detroit’ etc etc.  There’s no hint that things can be ‘real’ between them in this life and so Matteo keeps having these small moments of sadness throughout the episode.
Tumblr media
7.  And so that’s why this whole part is tinged with a melancholy.  Unlike in other versions, there’s no passion here, no ‘throwing caution to the wind’ or anything.  Instead it’s so gentle and cautious, so fragile.  There’s a sigh of relief that David is here, but neither of them is at ease.  Of course, we start to understand David’s thing the next day.  But even here it’s so clear why Matteo feels the way he does - everything since David told him he’s not into him has been such a rollercoaster that it’s not possible for him to throw caution to the wind.  He’s felt so much sadness and heartbreak about David even this week that he can’t allow himself to fully dive into this moment.  And of course we’re left with this shot of David’s face and we get to see that he’s not happy either.  It’s a long long few hours til the next morning and David’s secret!

So this show had the making to be something really decent but veered off-track pretty sharpish. If you don’t mind hearing some constructive criticism, please read on. I want to find out if others felt the same way.
Tumblr media
The story follows Uea and King’s navigation from being bed friends (aka friends with benefits) to being a bonafide couple. The overwhelming feeling I felt after watching this series is that there was a ‘let’s include everything’ mentality. The writing lacked cohesive focus and restraint in what plot points would best serve the telling of this story.
One example of the shaky writing is the poor use of conflict. There is no clear objective in why certain conflicts are included. We get multiple villains to the same effect whose only purpose is to pile anguish onto our lead and little else: Uea’s mother, stepfather, ex-boyfriend and boss all come across as caricatures with no distinction or redeemable qualities to speak of. When such components are used all too frequently, they feel less consequential - thus drastically reducing suspense, stakes, and emotional investment from the viewer. No depth results in no impact.
Episode 9 was particularly guilty of this and I’ll use this as a case study. It opens with Uea’s stepfather being arrested (this is quickly set up at the end of episode 8) and is not referenced again. Then a colleague confesses their love for Uea, which sets up a potential love rival for King. We’ve never seen him even interact with Uea before so it feels completely out of the blue. This poses no threat because we know Uea will turn him down for this very reason. Surprise, surprise, he does. Then we see King’s mother display disapproval of King/Uea’s relationship. Other than just one brief, prickly confrontation - by her next appearance - she quickly accepts Uea.
Quality over quantity is the key lesson here. Be selective. Ensure your story beats are set up and fleshed out with enough breathing room, delivered with a satisfying payoff, rather than throwing everything in and hoping something sticks. If you are ever in doubt if a scene is superfluous, always ask the why. Why include this? Does it add value (to either the story and/or characters)? Bed Friend had me questioning this a lot.
I like the nod to blood testing that both Uea and King get done after their first night together. I give kudos whenever a show makes the effort to feature and normalise concerns around sexual health.
Tumblr media
Main Leads: Despite suffering a huge amount of hardship, Uea is a surprisingly put together human being. He knows what he wants but is reasonable when he needs to be. I really enjoyed Uea’s confidence in his sexuality. He knows his own allure and how to harness that power. King can be downright sweet and charming but sadly didn’t have a strong sense of his own personhood. There was little backstory or context given to help you understand him as a individual and his motivations outside of Uea, which left me confused sometimes as to his decision-making. As the other main lead, I’m extremely disappointed by how badly his characterisation was handled. For example Uea coins him as a playboy, but we never see evidence of King excessively flirting with other people. We need to understand why Uea perceives him so negatively, to act as a comparison for when Uea changes his opinion later on. Show, don’t just tell. Overall, it’s their situation which develops (their relationship status) rather than their characters. They are more or less the same people they were at the beginning, just together.
Other: As the series unfolds mostly around Uea’s point of view, the remaining cast do get a raw deal. Give your secondary characters more to do than just be there. Please. More creative decisions could have been made in how these smaller characters could have played into the narrative (such as Jade, Uea’s sister or King’s parents), so that their roles don’t feel relegated to being background noise.
Tumblr media
Acting Performance: I did fall in love with Net and James as the series progressed. They have incredibly fiery and exhilarating chemistry which translates especially well in their love scenes. They manage to balance heat with incredible levels of tenderness. I would even argue that as soon as they have any physical interaction on screen, that’s when the show comes alive. They are very adept at creating sexual tension, that’s for sure. It’s the dialogue driven moments that tend to be a bit hit and miss (but I think editing has a big part to play in this). You can tell these two are still newcomers and aren’t quite as layered in their acting abilities yet but that’s understandable. Net has a habit of doing a lot of heavy breathing when he’s conveying anxiety or worry. This can be remedied with more coaching and better direction. Note: I did also watch some of their acting in 'Catch me Baby' for context. Net has noticeably improved since then but James actually felt more natural in his performance in that series than here.
Pairing Rating: [HOT + TENDER] If you want to get hot under the collar, and still maintain softness, this two have got you covered. Sizzling sensuality in buckets.
Tumblr media
For a show that clearly has high production values, this is where the series really suffers. A myriad of issues become apparent beneath the show’s glossy exterior, and the biggest sin here is it detracts from the actor’s efforts. I really do feel for the cast because production didn’t do them justice.
Editing: There are some very odd editing choices across the board.
Excessive uses of slow motion in places where it doesn’t belong. Some border on absurd (I laughed out loud during the first NC scene *above* where King somersaults onto Uea’s lap). I don’t know about you, but kung-fu matrix style choreography is not warranted in love scenes.
Sound-mixing choices can completely kill the mood. I cringed during the cat NC scene when comedic ‘yowls (meows)’ played in the background. Just why?
Instances where conflicting shifts in mood would take place within a single scene, particularly in how music was used. This would cause me tonal whiplash.
Flashbacks are superfluously added into scenes we saw only moments ago, occupying precious run time.
The passage of space and time can feel abrupt and therefore jarring. Establishing scenes need to be better utilised to anchor the viewer in the where and when things are taking place.
Fans have noticed really lovely scenes that were cut short or completely. No clear reasoning as to what made the cut/uncut versions or not at all.
Ultimately, the show feels like its trying far too hard to be distinctive, which can discredit the gravity of the scenes or draw your attention away from the performances. Now believe it or not, I can see what they were going for (cue sultry music video with dramatic quick cuts). I’ll credit that many of the shots and way they use camera work is certainly eye-catching and fresh. But flashiness for the sake of it is not a good thing if it adversely impacts pacing or comprehension of the narrative. Some editing styles only work best in short form rather than in a series, which is a trap they fell into here. It made the direction feel clumsy, lacking consistency and finesse - a kid in a candy store discovering PowerPoint transitions for the first time.
Styling: I do love the styling and palette of this series. All the costumes and environments looked really beautiful and rich - from our two leads’ apartments to their design office. They successfully manifested a more mature feeling to the series overall.
>>>
FINAL THOUGHTS: Now don’t get me wrong, I have grown to love this pairing. I think they have fantastic potential, and this is why the production issues irk me so damn much, because it spoils what could have been. If you’re willing to ignore the more glaring problems, there are some lovely moments sprinkled in there. I personally found the issues increasingly distracting as the series went on, causing me to skip portions. But why I saw this through was because I could tell Net and James tried their best with what they were given. If less time had been spent on stylistic choices, and more energy on Net and James’ acting, we might have a different story. I still believe they are a very promising partnership that could flourish with a better script, and I pray that ‘Love Upon a Time’ showcases them better.
Tumblr media
(Disclaimer: These are just my own opinions. It goes without saying that one still can enjoy a show for all its successes as well as recognising its shortcomings.)

Unpopular Opinions: EarthSpark Wishlist Edition.
Was going to give some thoughts on S1 a while back but never got around to it, so eh. Let's look ahead to S2 with some things I'd like to see and some I wouldn't.
Characters:
Ironically, the one character I wanted to see but didn't think would fit the show seems like he's actually going to appear. I've already written up an extensive Prowl wishlist, but to summarize: socially awkward and seemingly cold or rude, but nice once you get to know him; either not a cop or an ex-cop; disability optional but strongly encouraged. Also, if he's going to have low empathy or a strongly numbers-based approach to the world, don't villainize him for it.
Aside from Prowl, the only characters I have strong feelings about are ones I don't want to see. Basically all of them are MTMTE/LL characters, but the only ones I'm going to call out specifically are the DJD: I feel like they would need to be a season-long threat to be properly utilized, and since we've already had one major "hunt down Decepticons" plotline, I'm not interested in seeing another.
Not a deal-breaker, but I'd rather not see any more gender-swapping. I don't mind Ravage or Nova Storm and I warmed up to Frenzy, but Skywarp just doesn't feel like the same character. By which I mean I wouldn't be able to write her the same way I write him, because the way I write him would be a female stereotype applied to her. And I couldn't do her relationship with Starscream the same way either (same goes for her relationship with Thundercracker if he shows up). So as far as fanfic goes, she's literally a different character who I'd need to approach completely differently, and I just. If you need a bigger female cast and you can bring in characters like Hardtop and Skullcrusher, you can give little-seen female characters some time in the sun. Do that instead.
Pairings:
So first off, kudos to EarthSpark for finally producing a Megatron & Optimus dynamic where they actually feel like friends, but that's all I see them as, tbh. In fact, there's only one pairing I have any interest in so far, and that's MegaStar. And with that being said, I would like to see some development between them in the next season. But not Megatron trying to make things right with Starscream: Starscream deserves to have his desire for distance respected. Instead, put them in a situation where they're forced to cooperate and let them start to work things out from there. Maybe some apologies that neither is required to accept (we don't actually know what Starscream might have to apologize for in this universe, but I'm sure there's something).
As far as potential future pairings, I guess I wouldn't hate TaraProwl. On one hand, I would prefer as few IDW influences as possible, but on the other hand, the monsterfucker in me wants someone to pair Tarantulas with. But if they're going to interact, I need Prowl to not be a jerk and I'd love it if they didn't already know each other.
Other Random Desires:
Minimal IDW influences.
Normally I wouldn't think about this in a Transformers show, but after the Mother's Day episode: no more holiday episodes please (I will make an exception for an Independence Day episode that highlights recreational explosives as a horrible way to celebrate. Seems perfect for this show).
Still torn on whether or not I want to see Nightshade become aware of transphobia, but I'm thinking not. Won't say no to having more trans/nonbinary characters, though (I will make an exception to the no gender-swapping thing if the swapped character is explicitly trans).
More disabled characters! If not Prowl, then someone (was kinda disappointed that Twitch's optic got repaired by the Magic, not gonna lie).
Okay, that's all for now. Might revisit this when we get a trailer for S2.

Breakup [A Fear Street drabble]
Written for Fear Street Appreciation Week 2022
Day 2 (June 27): Angst or “Light”
Originally posted to AO3 here (if you’re interested in my author’s notes, that’s where you’ll find them; please consider leaving a comment and kudos, even if you’re a guest!)
Rating: Teen
Word count: 2105
Characters: Sam Fraser, Deena Johnson
Warnings: Exactly What It Says On The Tin
Tumblr media
Leaving was never going to be easy, and it was something Sam refused to delude herself about.  Shadyside was home, and you didn’t just throw away seventeen years of home so easily, especially not for a place like Sunnyvale.
Unless you were her mom, apparently.
“Have you packed your clothes yet?”
Speak of the devil.  Sam gritted her teeth, setting down the scrapbook she’d picked up and rolling her eyes as she called back, “I’m working on it!”
It wasn’t entirely true.  She could really only pack so much before they actually moved, and as long as she had most of her other stuff packed, why bother about the clothes?  Furthermore, her mom had already been talking about buying new things for her wardrobe once they moved, so she could “fit in better” at Sunnyvale High.  If she was going to go on a clothes shopping spree shortly after they moved, what was the point of packing all of her clothes?
“Feels stupid,” she murmured to herself.  She didn’t mean the clothes thing.  At least, not just the clothes thing.  And besides that, it didn’t matter what her mom wanted to try to do to make the change smoother: Sunnyvale high schoolers would single her out anyway.  She was going to be a pariah the moment they moved into their new place, just for being “Shadyside trash” existing in their bubble of perfect air.
The rest of high school was going to be miserable, at this rate.
Deena, she told herself.  Think about Deena.
Her not-so-secret secret girlfriend, despite the fact she wasn’t taking the news about the Fraser parents’ divorce and the subsequent move well, was one of the only things getting Sam through the moving and packing process at that moment.  Right now, it felt like everything about her life was getting completely disordered, and Deena was one of her only grounding points that allowed her to sort things into facts she could live with.
Fact one: her parents were getting a divorce, and nothing she could do would change that.  It wasn’t her fault, even if that hadn’t sunk in yet, and the more she thought back and wondered about how bad their relationship had started deteriorating, maybe it would be a good thing for them to have a divorce.  It still hurt and it was still hard to navigate, but it wasn’t her fault and she had no control over it.
Fact two: in the wake of the divorce, her mom was getting a very nice, very hefty settlement, and decided that because of the settlement, they would be moving to perfect, pristine Sunnyvale.  Sam had had no say in the decision any more than she had a real say in which parent she stayed with.  She didn’t like it, but her mother didn’t care and she had no control over it.
Fact three: she was going to be transferring to Sunnyvale High School.  If she managed to at least keep her grades afloat and make the cheerleading squad, maybe she could survive the remainder of high school.  Maybe.  She doubted it would be easy or that she would be accepted by the pedigree students, but she could make it through.  It wasn’t forever.
Fact four: there was going to be half-an-hour’s worth of travel to see Deena and all of their friends now.  It felt like forever, but it would be worth the drive when they could make it to see each other.  This was one of the only things buoying her through this hectic week of packing and prepping.
The first chance we get, we need to plan whenever I’m going to come visit, ASAP.  At least that way I’ll have something to look forward to after I make it through my first week.
Something to cling to like a life raft, she didn’t want to admit to herself.
She looked down at the scrapbook again, heart thumping a bit harder than usual, and gently opened it to a page at random.  Among the glitter and stickers, there were three separate pictures pasted to the page.  All three had been taken at the bowling alley, two of which featured her with both Deena and Kate.  Kate was absent from the last picture, and it was on this one that Sam focused, brushing her fingertips over the glossy surface.  Simon had told them both to strike a pose and make a face, and they’d gotten goofy with it.  But even then, back when they’d been in middle school, Sam could see the way Deena had turned her face inward in their pose, closer to her.  They hadn’t been together then, but they’d both felt the chemistry by then, she was sure of that.
Sniffling a little, she brushed at her eyes to prevent any stray tears from getting ideas, and turned another page.  The images here kicked off a large chunk of pages just composed of a trip to the King’s Island amusement park.  That had been early summer, right before they started freshman year at Shadyside High.  None of their parents could really afford it themselves, but given it was still a big deal to go from middle school to high school, so all of them had chipped in together for a bunch of them to be able to go as a group, and they’d spent the entire day at the amusement park.  They’d not been able to buy much in the way of souvenirs—park food was ridiculously expensive and took up most of the cash the parents had given them—but Sam had thought ahead of time to bring a couple of disposable cameras so they could at least document some of the fun.
She was glad she had; she had a feeling in the next few weeks she’d be thumbing through the scrapbook more than normal.
A sudden knock at her bedroom window made her jump and the scrapbook fell out of her hands onto the the pile of other things in her current box, its cover falling shut.  Turning in herky-jerky motions, she looked at her window at first in wariness, then relaxed and smiled.  She should have guessed it was Deena; she had mentioned at some point that she would stop by.  She was staring in at Sam, her expression pained and her eyes bright with unshed tears as her lips drew down into the pout she insisted she never had.
Sam got to her feet, moved to the window, and hauled it up and open, leaning on the sill with her hands as she smiled at her girlfriend.
    “Hey!”
“Hey,” Deena parroted back thickly, blinking hard.  Trust Deena Johnson to play tough at any opportunity.
Except…Deena wasn’t supposed to play tough.  Not when it was just the two of them.
“What- what’s up?” Sam asked, thrown off by Deena’s behavior.  “Sorry, I- I’d invite you in to help me pack but—”
“Oh, right,” Deena said, her face still alive with hurt, but her voice slipping into the sarcastic tone she adopted when upset and unwilling to admit it.  “Because the thing I want more than anything else is to help you pack up and move away to Sunnyvale.”
Sam blinked, shaking her head slowly.  “Wh- um… Sorry, uh,” she stammered, letting out a dry, shaky laugh with no joy behind it.  “We talked about this, Deena.  You know why we’re moving.”
“Yeah, well I still think it’s bullshit.”
Sam stared at her, took in the way Deena was crossing her arms angrily, the way she was looking at her without quite meeting her eyes.  Alarms started to ring in her head, and she tried to tell herself not to overreact.
“I don’t have much of a choice, Deena,” she said carefully.  “I’m not eighteen, I have to go with one of my parents, and as much as the court likes to pretend I get some kind of a say in which one I go with, the fact is that Ohio law states my mom has the stronger claim to custody.”
“Did you even try to fight for which parent you wanted to go with?”
Sam blinked and shook her head again, baffled.  “What are you talking about, Deena?  I wanted to go with Mom so I could still stay as close as possible.  My dad’s moving out of state.  If I stay with Mom, at least I’ll still be close enough that visiting Shadyside will still be easy,” she explained.  When Deena didn’t say anything, but continued to glower and keep her arms crossed, making ice form in Sam’s stomach, Sam forced out a question that left an acidic taste on her tongue.
“Deena…are you just mad that I’ve got to move at all, or is this because I’m moving to Sunnyvale?”
Deena didn’t say anything at first, but her eyes narrowed and almost seemed to spark in the sun, and her nostrils flared as she started breathing harder.  Sam’s arms started to shake on the sill and she had to stop putting her weight on them.  That’s what this was about?  That they were relocating to Sunnyvale?
“Just think it’s not like you,” Deena answered at last.  “Not like you to just throw away who you are for the sake of living with a bunch of rich, elitist trash.”
What the hell?  Sam studied her, wishing that Deena would break it up with a laugh, with a playful shove, with some kind of reassurance she was just messing with her to hide the pain that they were going to be missing each other.  But no, she looked dead-serious.
“You know that’s not what this is—” Sam started, feeling the beginnings of fury starting to grow in her chest.
    “It’s over, Sam.”
She felt her arms drop down to her sides.  Had the sounds outside stopped completely?  The sunlight had gone cold.
    “What?” she breathed.
“It’s over,” Deena repeated, her voice terrifyingly steady.  “I’m not doing this.  I’m done, okay?  You go, you move to Sunnyvale, party it up at your new school with your new friends, forget about home, forget about us, forget about me.  Have fun with your new, perfect life, okay?  I hope it’s everything you’ve ever wanted.  But I’m done.  We’re done.  It’s over.  We’re over.”
The ice, the fire, the confusion and the anger fell away.  She was teetering on the edge of a yawning chasm, balance precarious.  The tears that had threatened earlier were starting to sting at her eyes in earnest now.
“Are you…” she whispered, voice trembling and small, “breaking up with me?”
Deena nodded, and not even the fact her eyes were starting to run over with tears could take away from the icy resolve in her expression or the way it dared Sam to protest or challenge it.  They stared at one another for what felt like a small eternity, neither bothering to hide their tears from the other, until Deena nodded to the cluster of boxes Sam had been working on.
“Better get back to that,” she remarked.  “Wouldn’t want your Mom to have a cow because you wanted to act sentimental.”
There was a knife in her gut, twisting deeper and deeper with each word, and with each bounce of Deena’s curls as she spun and stormed away from the window of Sam’s room.
The chasm was right there, wide and waiting, like it was ready to welcome her.  She teetered on her feet, not wanting to fall, and stayed staring out the window for a long time, the world outside blurred as she wept in silence.
All of the carefully ordered facts she’d been using pitched into the chasm one by one, no longer able or willing to try helping her make it through.  Deena had broken up with her.  No, Deena had dumped her.  Like she—no, like their relationship was nothing that couldn’t be discarded over some inconvenience.  She got that her girlfriend and their friends hated Sunnyvale outright.  Hell, she still wasn’t a big fan and wasn’t sure she ever would be!  But she didn’t have a single real choice in any of this any more.
Deena seems to think I do, though.
“What the hell…” she murmured, the words watery and broken.  “I don’t have a choice.”
Her knees were getting shaky, and she forced herself to sit down on the floor next to the boxes, pulling her knees up to her chest, curling into a tight ball.  She buried her head, feeling the sobs hitch in her chest, and hugged herself tight.
Maybe I just don’t get a choice in anything at all…

To Hate Adam Connors || Book Review
To start off, I wanna say how good this book was. I relate to Lucy Meyer so much, for having daddy issues, for being scared to open up her heart to anyone or any guy she meets. However, I couldn’t help but question all of the characters moves.
I am going to rate this book a solid 8.5 out of 10 but on Goodreads, a solid 5/5. I have so many words to say about this book. I first wanna start, with how Lucy started her visions and beliefs towards love (Spoiler Alert!!).
“Here, I’ll say it again: I genuinely believe in love. I know all about its magic. Good and bad. I know the world seems bigger when you’re drunk on love. I know it mends broken hearts, makes you deliriously happy, excited, hopeful…terrified, sick…a whole list of things that make this complicated world we are living in a better place.”
Those words hits me in the spot. The way Lucy said what she believes is so relatable, I mean who wouldn’t? The girl got dumped over and over again and she thinks it’s a family curse, but I knew as she said those words, I know she is wrapping her heart with some thick covers so she won’t fall or be broken again by some stupid guy. Who wants to cry and be broken because of some stupid guy anyway?
But let’s talk about how she constantly, climbed over the walls, and continue to have this love-hate relationship with the male lead-yes, Adam fucking Connors (Ain’t gonna lie, I imagined Adam Connors as a Magic Mike Dancer) and his little son Aiden, ugh… such a cutie!
Also, didn’t realize that she and Olive are friends, but do remind me to read To Love Jason Thorn. Anyways, what really makes this book great is that I quoted a lot of Taylor Swift songs, (yes—your gurl is a Swiftie!)
And one song that describes Lucy is You’re On Your Own Kid. Ever since she was little, she was abandoned by her mom because her mom didn’t received love and it’s just cruel—and that is a generational trauma there. Started from her grandmother, passed down to her mom and to her. Which came to the point she thinks she’s cursed which she isn’t, she just believed that because she’s scared of repeating the same mistakes her mother and grandmother did. And honestly, no surprise that she has daddy and mommy issues.
Lucy wasn’t a beastly type of girl, she was so broken, not from her ex but from her own blood, her own family who practically ignored her for her whole life, and thankfully! She met Olive, and if weren’t for Olive, she’ll continue to be alone. (We do need a best friend like Olive, but eh I have my whole Greentroville peeps!)
Adam Connors on the other hand—he has every rights to be mad to his ex wife and his parents. It’s so cruel that his parents “mistakes” were passed to him and was expected to be erased by him because he is a nepotism child. Plus, I am so mad when he got into showbiz, like people, have you seen the harsh words of the internet? It’s a good thing that this is only fictional characters. Still, I feel so sorry for him to carry this burden around his shoulders, raising his son all alone, and his ex wife, demanding popularity and fame and using his son as a way to have a role. (Big red flag!!!)
Though, kudos to him—he still finds a way to spend time with his son, and not only that he spent his time, healing Lucy’s heart with all of his teasing's and stuff. Can we also talk about how he calls her sweetheart, baby, honey. ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE IS MAD! He didn’t hesitate to hug her and calm her down even tho they started off with a wrong foot. But I know to myself, Lucy is falling for him and she’s just scared to admit, I was like—gurl, accept it, he is the first gut, probably the last guy who will accept you and say “Fuck your curse, I will marry you and love you till the day I die” (Please, I want an Adam Connors in my life.
But let’s all be honest, even tho they ended up together (SPOILERS!!!!!) there will be a point where Lucy’s gonna doubt and have second guesses. Because, Lucy Meyer was a victim of love, different kinds of love, yes Adam may healed her heart but the trauma and fear won’t easily go away.
Hence the line
"Because if I fall in love with him, I won't survive the fall."
INTERNAL SCREAMING ANC CRYING
WHY DO I RELATE SO MUCH? Cause every fucking guy I met, has these motives and leaves me hanging on a very thin line of thread. So, yes I relate to Lucy Meyer so fucking much.
And how could I forget Adam’s assurance? He admitted to himself, the second he saw Lucy fight for herself, he fell in love. He fell first but she fell harder (brb I’m gonna cry)
This guy, he’s nearly perfect, the assurance, the words, his feelings—it’s all for Lucy, and Lucy herself (and Aiden too)
So, in the end? I gave it a solid 8.5/10, would recommend this to my friends who is in dire need of YA Romance books. And to be honest, this is a great starter for readers who are in medium level (Children or Teens, whoever you are and you know that you are a minor, don’t read this. Go read fantasy books first before jumping to this book)
The spicy level tho, I would say it 5 cause, it’s all sexy talking and kissing. The smut scenes weren’t really that spicy. (Sorry for those who find this book spicy. Istg, it isn’t lol)
Song for the book? Afterglow by Taylor Swift. No explanation needed.
and I guess my first review of 2023 ends here, I’ll try to post more reviews after I finish my art projects and activities.

'Screams incoherently' I may not survive this. So intense. So many feels. @kedreeva here I go again.
Episode 7 flailing commencing...
Mike reassuring El that she's still pretty without the wig is adorable.
Lucas' realisation that the bad men are real and they are BAD. Screaming his head off down the radio that they all need to run, because they're coming for Eleven.
The reconcilation scene. All the feels. Also, adults have problems with that level of accountability and responsibility. Go kids.
Joyce is the best. Joyce is the best. Joyce is the best. Jonathan thinks she's mad about the lying (and maybe the getting into trouble with the police). No, she's angry about you planning to put yourself in that level of danger, because she's your mother and protecting her kids is the most important thing in her life.
Nancy's reaction to all the lights at the Byers place.
Mike being offended at the suggestion that his sister might be in league with the bad people. Only he is allowed to criticise her!
Oh, that's why Troy is the way he is. His mother is a hell-Karen. As opposed to Karen Wheeler, who is a lovely person who also just wants her kids to be safe.
Only a privileged white guy could come out with the 'they're our government. They're on our side' line. They've gone through your things, they're hiding information from you. Please tell me you at least asked to see a search warrant? (I doubt it)
These agents do not seem particularly competent, if Hopper can take them all out by himself. Also, it says something about his reputation that the kids seem to think so highly of him. Dustin's paranoia levels are also understandable!
Yay for Steve finally realising that Tommy and Carol suck. Character development! Also kudos to movie theatre guy for accepting the unspoken apology and attempt to start making things right. (Steve doesn't admit it outright, but fairly sure the guy can put together a nasty bit of graffiti, the cops being called to a fight round the corner, and a teenager with a messed up face offering to help clean. I might have checked he wasn't concussed before I let him up a ladder though!)
El trying and failing to find Will and Barb. Realising the solution and visibly screwing up her courage to go and tell the others what she needs.
'Why are you trying to close this curiosity door?' My favourite line so far. Also Mr Clarke's enthusiasm for explaining the special (gross) effects in the film. So many people would do that in a condescending way (why are you scared? It's not real) or to show off. He's just excited. And adorable.
Sibling stuff with Nancy and Mike. Their relationship has been so well written and acted throughout, you really believe in it. The 'you drive me up the wall but I will go for anyone who hurts you' thing. A+, no notes.
The stuff with Joyce and El... my heart! Joyce just sees a frightened kid, and that's something she can help. When she tells El to get out of there at the first hint she might be in danger, and El realising that she might actually mean it, that an adult might be trustworthy... all the tears.
The sensory deprivation scene is just incredible. Terrifying and heartbreaking and touching. Is this the first time an adult has kept a promise to El? Joyce is there for her all the time, even as she hears her son's exhausted voice through the radio, enough of her attention is on El to pull her out the second the monster finds her.
Nancy. The fact that you are right about the danger to Hopper and Joyce does not make your plan a better idea. I don't think she's even considering her own safety now that she has had the hope that Barb might still be alive snatched away.
Hopper. You got caught last time you tried this. Remember? You did not think this through properly.
Bad cliffhanger. Bad. No. Leave Will alone, he's dealt with enough.

Well to start ill give rih kudos for finally being more stern with rylee and putting her mother in place, and also letting her know she still don't fully fool with Clinton regardless if chris there or not. And her mother still doing the same thing she been doing trying to motivate rih to try and control chris like he her child and not her man/ husband. The kids were happy to see there dad imani cried even Jr.  Wanted him and answered about throwing a football at Mychal head lol. Rih just gonna have to accept she can't have a boyfriend cause even when the girls ain't around, them boys gonna make problems. And rih and chris energy of heavy attraction is still there Tianna said it best Awkward,  he didn't want to keep looking at her and she was at a loss for words immediately seeing him. Mychal already loss any chance now that it's opportunity for them to establish a proper co parenting communication between them instead of court ordered.rih isn't gonna comfortably be interested in no other man. Plus it'll definitely be over rylee dead body especially while daddy back in there life and fighting to have rekindled relationship with them so for rylee the next step will be him and her mother getting back close. And I'm sure her and Tianna won't make it easy for them to not be friendly at least.

Isabella - 73584
I had a serious debate with myself over whether or not I wanted to sit down and spend my weekend writing another one of these praise posts. I was content with just doing one for each of the Fullscore Trio kids and ending it there.. but apparently I love this woman too much to just ignore her on her birthday. So here were are on September 9th with a list of all her best and my personal favorite moments as to why I believe she’s such a great character, antagonist and mother (yeah you heard me right). Considering she only shows up in the beginning and very end of the story, this post ended up longer than I originally anticipated, which just goes to show how many thoughts I really have about this woman. (for real, this rivals Ray’s post in terms of points but there’s far more words)
Tumblr media
Since she also has some backstory and certain events differ between manga and anime (thanks to the second season), I’ll try to go in chronological order between both timelines instead of chapter by chapter, which might be a bit confusing as we’ll jump around the story a lot but just to bear with me as I try to makes sense of it all.
(spoilers for the entirety of The Promised Neverland & ch181.7, so if you haven’t read/completed the manga yet, consider this your first warning, because I’m literally going from start to finish with this one last time. I promise.)
- I’m not sure how well she compares to Emma when it comes to athleticism, but Isabella seemed to have no trouble climbing up and down trees when she was younger.
Tumblr media
- Not only that, but she managed to scale the wall by herself using a method that requires a fairly impressive jump. It’s also implied that this is how she climbs the wall again so many years later when chasing the soon-to-be escapees, which helps prove that even at an older age, she hasn’t lost her touch.
Tumblr media
- Was chosen to undergo training to become a Mom, which required high test scores and the current mother’s recommendation. She accepted the offer in order to keep living and survive as human the demons couldn’t eat.
Tumblr media
- Based on Sienna’s comment, is it fair to say Isabella is on par with the full score trio? I mean, the woman is basically flawless.
Tumblr media
- She was practically untouchable during her time at headquarters while training too apparently. Mom positions are scarce so the environment where these ladies fight (physically/mentally/emotionally) to even snag that job is highly competitive, and yet Isabella never let anyone deter her from her goal of becoming a Mom, which probably led to the “Iron Lady” nickname she received now that I think about it.
Tumblr media
- She was the youngest ever to be granted the Mom position at..what, 19? 20? Somewhere around there, but impressive nonetheless considering they’re forced to have a child, build up a strong, emotionless exterior and endure so much fear. (but my goodness, the woman doesn’t age at all. she looks just as good when the story actually starts as she did her when she was a bit younger)
Tumblr media
- It became common knowledge among the Sisters that she was also very successful in the way she raised her children.
Tumblr media
- Her success greatly benefited the farm, as she offered up countless high quality goods, which sounds terrible, I know, but believe me when I say she gave her best effort for her children. Even though she held the Mom position, the amount of power she actually had in this system was pretty minimal, especially with how much she valued her own life. She couldn’t afford to make any mistakes or risky changes, so she settled with doing the most with what she was capable of. She provided her children with a normal lifestyle, not only to keep up the orphanage facade, but knowing that their lives would all be cut shorter than they anticipate. She gave them love in hopes that no one would ever have to feel the dread she felt after Leslie’s death and/or finding out the truth. She tried to delay that horrific fate by encouraging them to learn all they can (like teaching the trio about strategy and chess) so they could achieve higher tests scores and (unknowingly to them) add a couple more months or years onto their lives. Yes it was her job to raise these children to such high standards but she excelled at it for their sake too.
Tumblr media
- And I know y’all will just throw Ray in my face like, “oh but he was her actual child and she treated him horribly/different.” Okay but deep down I don’t think she actually wanted to? When they both realized they were truly mother and son, Isabella couldn’t just dote on him and start treating him as such. I’m sure Ray wasn’t too fond of Isabella at this point in his life either, knowing that she sent several of his siblings away to get killed. They probably would’ve gotten along just fine in a perfect world, but since they were both aware of the hell they’re trapped living in, they emotionally distanced themselves and formed a business-like relationship as a result of Ray’s deal, which benefited them both in different ways. For Ray, it was more practical, with the obvious notion of living as long as possible along with obtaining various rewards and knowledge of the outside world. For Isabella, it helped emotionally by simply just ignoring their true relation. I believe if she clung to that realization, it would break the orphanage illusion and eventually wear down her “Iron Lady” exterior that she relies so heavily on.
Tumblr media
- Like can you imagine how much you would have to harden your heart in order to quite literally walk children to their death every couple months for years on end and just move on like it’s completely normal? Now imagine how earth shattering it must be to think about doing the same to your actual child. All those years spent perfecting a fake smile and emotionless exterior like she was trained to have and her son shatters it in an instant. She becomes completely terrified about how he’s actually alive and in front of her right now and there’s nothing she can do to truly save him.. and yet she still recovers so damn quickly I can’t even comprehend it! But there’s still some sadness in those eyes. You can’t tell me otherwise. That one moment of weakness speaks volumes to me.
Tumblr media
- So now with her general backstory FINALLY out of the way, we can finally start with ch01/ep01 and how her laugh is sweet and innocent. I say that because (all hidden emotions and motives aside) that’s exactly how she’s supposed to sound in this moment, not only to us but to the children as well.
Tumblr media
- She of course checks Emma’s tracker a moment later but other than that I still think it’s a pretty genuine moment between the two.
Tumblr media
- As previously stated, her ability to raise high quality children is unmatched, which is clear as day thanks to the fullscore trio.
Tumblr media
- Despite their crazy level of intelligence, the trio has yet to win a simple game of chess against Isabella, even when teamed up.
Tumblr media
- She treasures everything about the kids.
Tumblr media
- She really cares about them, even when it’s time to send them off with a smile, which we know is thanks to her strong facade.
Tumblr media
- But mother dearest isn’t really fine. She doesn’t like walking kids to their death, especially so young. But she can’t let them (or even herself) know that. She can’t show weakness, so she hums Leslie’s song, which is a tool she’s used for years in order to give herself strength.
Tumblr media
- Don’t worry, I disliked her this moment happened too, just as the story intended. And here’s where her fantastic antagonist role begins for all the world to see.
Tumblr media
- A true champ at jump scares.
Tumblr media
- Acts completely calm the night after a couple of kids found out the secret of the farm.
Tumblr media
- She uses the tracker in plain sight, sending whomever went to the gate last night a threatening but silent message.
Tumblr media
- Correct Norman, that’s the “Iron Lady” for ya. Also the name of ch03 for us. Well, “The Iron Woman” but same difference.
Tumblr media
- She switches from calculating and manipulative breeder to sweet and pleasant mother so quickly and effortlessly it’s incredible. Isabella even checked Emma’s pulse in this scene to see if she was acting normal.
Tumblr media
- At this point she still had no idea who went to the gate (Ray didn’t tip her off yet, at least I don’t think so) but her guess couldn’t have been more precise. The level of fear she drives into both Emma and Norman was great too, but then again her presence is enough in any scene to give us chills.
Tumblr media
- Notices her watchdog isn’t at his usual post and starts to get suspicious.
Tumblr media
- Not only of him, Emma and Norman, but Don and Gilda as well, thus giving the five extra chores to finish in an attempt to slow down any escape planning, such as cleaning vacant rooms, organizing the pantry and inspecting spare linen.
Tumblr media
- While the trio believes Isabella was being too soft and patient in finding her targets, she effectively catches them off guard by bringing in Krone for assistance. The trio soon realize they were actually preparing the sister’s new room and those mundane chores were just an excuse to buy time.
Tumblr media
- Look at her, all smug. Checkmate indeed. (and totally not important, but her eyes are such pretty shades of purple)
Tumblr media
- The sass and her no nonsense attitude.
Tumblr media
- Immediately puts Krone in her place the moment she even thinks about shipping out the targets. Of course holding off on shipping the targets would benefit the farm, as it would produce higher quality merchandise as time passes, but plant 3 is run by Isabella and she’ll be damned if an assistant thinks they could waltz right in and decide her children’s fate.
Tumblr media
- She check’s Emma tracker again despite her claim of knowing exactly who the targets might be. You can never be too careful.
Tumblr media
- Her precious children managed to win a game of tag against Krone, which is still impressive considering the kind of training the sister has gone through, so kudos to her teachings.
Tumblr media
- Knows right away that Krone was trying to take advantage, which allows Krone to realize that the opening she had to learn more about the children was all planned by Isabella herself. Her intimidating nature is enough to scare adults too.
Tumblr media
- Reveals that Krone was mostly summoned in order to keep Ray in check after his failure.
Tumblr media
- Despite the trust issue, Isabella still keeps up her end of the deal by requesting the items Ray asked for, thanks to the odd perks she had under Grandma Sarah which allowed her to order goods that weren’t on the supply list.
Tumblr media
- This hug between her and Phil is just too cute not to mention.
Tumblr media
- I imagine she makes this comment because she knows exactly how long a rope must be based off her own almost-escape.
Tumblr media
- It’s just something about how this scene is framed alongside this dialogue that makes me think “oh, like mother, like son.”
Tumblr media
- I blame her very thoughtful planning for my first big freak out when I watched season 1 blind, like ma’am that’s my favorite boy, please don’t.
Tumblr media
- She conspires with Grandma Sarah in order to get rid of Krone for good, which renders the evidence sister just found out about the children’s escape completely useless. Sarah believes there might be some truth to it, but ultimately ignores it and puts her faith in Isabella’s ability of controlling the children & the situation.
Tumblr media
- She then cuts Ray off and ends their six-year long deal, opting to control the situation herself from now on. Also, how she wanted to keep him around until the very end is kinda bittersweet. Does she mean as merchandise? Or because she wanted him to live as long as possible? Ah such a tricky little comment.
Tumblr media
- She also tosses him across the room like a rag doll.
Tumblr media
- Thank god for this panel existing and actually being adapted into the anime so I could hear it because I had absolutely no memory of her laughing in this moment.
Tumblr media
- “She says it so nonchalantly,” Norman said once upon a time, and it’s still so frightening.
Tumblr media
- As insane as her ideals seem given the circumstances, nothing she says here is really a lie.
Tumblr media
- She has the strength to quite literally break a leg and that cracking noise still haunts me to this day.
Tumblr media
- It wasn’t even a spur of the moment thing either. Isabella came fully prepared with bandages to fix up any injury she was willing to inflict and that thought alone is terrifying.
Tumblr media
- Not only that, but she broke it so cleanly that Emma’s leg does indeed heal perfectly in the exact time frame she estimates. This entire moment is so unfairly impressive, like ma’am how dare you do this to Emma of all people.. like why couldn’t you at least use that kind of force to snap Peter’s neck instead or something?
Tumblr media
- To make matters worse, she then reveals Norman’s shipment date. And it’s the following day, which sends the kids into a very understandable panic.
Tumblr media
- Needless to say, November 2nd, 2045 was a very successful day in the life of Isabella. Woman was putting everyone in checkmate in ep08 and my anger on full blast.
Tumblr media
- This sly smile she sends Ray’s way after announcing Norman’s shipment to the younger kids is so cruel.. it’s perfect.
Tumblr media
- I can only imagine she asked about Ray’s whereabouts because she knew the boys were close friends and she hoped they would at least say goodbye to one another, but that’s just me.
Tumblr media
- Puts an end to Norman’s parting words in such a simple and chilling matter.
Tumblr media
- The way she just openly threatens Emma with others just out of earshot.
Tumblr media
- Norman out here asking the real questions. If anything, I say she’s more “content” rather than happy. I don’t think she’s ever really thought about her own happiness, at least not often enough, hence the slight pause. This entire time she’s been focusing on how to make her children’s lives perfect, but for herself she just wants to survive in this hellish world they’re all living in.
Tumblr media
- I’m honestly still not sure who’s final decision it is to send people to Lambda, either Isabella, Peter or someone else (honestly never bothered to check), but whether or not Isabella had any say in the matter, I’m sure she’s at least a little glad that Norman gets to live a bit longer? Perhaps that’s a stretch, but I’m putting the idea here anyway.
Tumblr media
- I say this because I believe that’s part of the reason why she offered Emma a Mom recommendation, not only because our girl’s high test scores, but in hopes that she could live a longer life.
Tumblr media
- Although she really stresses in an intimidation fashion how pointless Emma’s efforts are now that Norman’s “dead,” the cliff remains a major hazard and her leg is still bandaged up, Isabella still tries so hard to convince her to give up, like Ray has, in order for Emma to end her own suffering. It was the first instance during my blind watch-through were I started to get the hint that Isabella might actually care about her kids, and of course I know now it’s because she didn’t want Emma to experience the same pain she did after Leslie’s death.
Tumblr media
- With Emma and Ray both broken, things went by rather smoothly for Isabella those last two months, though she continued to keep a close eye on them.
Tumblr media
- Her humming is so soothing. And why it took me this long to bring up “Isabella’s Lullaby” is beyond me, but oh my god, that song and any other soundtrack that uses its melody is absolute perfection.
Tumblr media
- Had enough sense to not let her guard down the final night, even though her efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, but the idea counts.
Tumblr media
- Though her caretaker side is focused on more during the fire, some motherly instincts do kick in as she instructs Gilda to get the babies from her room and lead everyone outside to safety. She was also concerned for Emma’s well being, hoping all the smoke didn’t get to her when the girl vanished. (i know you can argue “she’s only worried because they’re merchandise” which is fair but c’mon, i swear she’s not completely heartless)
Tumblr media
- Took a hot minute (ahha) but Isabella eventually realized that the kids were actually escaping solely based on what they were wearing on their feet. I’m sure Emma’s discarded left ear was a big tip off too but to come to that conclusion by noticing the shoes they had on during all that chaos is surprising.
Tumblr media
- She looks completely insane here but I always thought this shot of her was nicely animated with all the fire (or embers? sparks? whatever they are) flying around. The laugh she does before this is also a nice bonus. Oh, and she somehow managed to secure a radio from the room Don had locked.
Tumblr media
- Figured the fifteen kids would head towards the bridge and called in headquarters to block it off.
Tumblr media
- But when the children didn’t appear at the bridge, she just happened to know exactly where else they might try to cross the cliff.
Tumblr media
- In the anime’s case, Isabella climbed the wall and ran there quick enough to engage in a stare down with Emma before she finally slid down.
Tumblr media
- The moment I knew I was doomed.
Tumblr media
- After the 15 kids successfully escaped, Isabella admits defeat, for she couldn’t really see how much her children have grown to outsmart her.
Tumblr media
- This iconic quote, which conveys so much truth and sincerity. There were multiple occasions where she had to distance and restrain herself due to the system that controlled her, but the love she was able to show the children was genuine. If she wasn’t held back by the strict rules enforced by Mom position, I don’t doubt she would’ve treated Ray better or became far more emotional whenever a child had to leave for good or seriously injured, instead of donning a fake smile and being closed off.
Tumblr media
- She realizes with this unspeakable loss in merchandise, the reputation she worked so hard to build up is meaningless now and that the farm no longer has any use for such an incompetent caretaker. She figures she’s as good as dead anyway now, so she wastes no time in actually helping the escapees by reclaiming the ropes to hide their exact method and route of escape, if only to grant the kids some extra time before the pursuers really locate them.
Tumblr media
- She doesn’t act bitter as a result of her loss, instead choosing to wish the escapees luck with the future they grasped for themselves and care for the children that were left behind.
Tumblr media
- She’s just so pretty y’all. Thank you anime.
Tumblr media
- She was named “Best Antagonist” (and rightfully so!) back during the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, winning over Askeladd (Vinland Saga), Overhaul, (My Hero Academia), Garoua (One Punch Man,) & others.
Tumblr media
(Post-season 1 spoilers ahead, even though the anime is completely finished at this point, but will be touching upon her special chapter more as well.)
- Completely owns up to her mistakes that caused the farm a massive loss in profitable goods and is ready to received whatever punishment necessary, which she expects to be death.
Tumblr media
- Only.. she’s not being killed, she’s actually being promoted to Grandma. Though Isabella was directly responsible for the children’s escape, the blame ultimately falls on Sarah who couldn’t correctly control Isabella, thus leading the old lady to be shipped out in place of the goods Isabella lost.
Tumblr media
- Peter also notes that the farm found more worth in Isabella than Sarah, so her past merits also played a part in sparing her life, as having a woman like Isabella in charge would surely produce the level of quality the farm needs.
Tumblr media
- Isabella eventually accepts the promotion, though she can’t help but feel hesitant and shocked about the whole deal. This woman was ready to embrace death and finally be free from this cruel world, but now she has to witness not only more kids being shipped off, but moms and sisters in training as well (yay old chapter reviews coming in clutch).
Tumblr media
- She could have very well just refused Peter’s offer, but we all know how much Isabella originally wanted to survive, so she doesn’t just accept because this man dangled a sense of freedom in her face, she also agreed so she could have the opportunity to help her children in any way her newfound power would allow her.
Tumblr media
- Of course, her transition to Grandma happens a bit differently in the second season, but I will give some bittersweet thanks to the anime once more for the obvious but curse them for also having this entire scene dark as hell. Let me see her beauty darn it! I can only fix the lighting so much until it looks overexposed and bad again.
Tumblr media
Anyways, Sarah is still alive at this point and taunts Isabella with the escapee’s lives just to see how she would react, which gave her a small sense of hope. Then some demons pay a visit later on and also ask if she would want to see the children one last time, but Isabella tells them that not only would she be too ashamed to face them but that they would manage to survive Grandma’s capture plan, which involved several men blowing up their shelter. It’s now clear to the demons that these children are special, and while Isabella agrees, it’s not for the same reason the demons think so. The demons believe the kids are special because of how they were raised to such a high quality. Isabella calls them special simply because they’re her children, just as any mother would.
Tumblr media
- In the anime, it’s the demons who offer Isabella the Grandma deal if Sarah’s current plan were to fail (which it does) and she takes it and the freedom from Grace Field House without question. Do I still believe she had similar intentions to help out the children like she did in manga at this point? Of course.
Tumblr media
- Not even a full month into her new job did she start preparing to help Emma & the others by considering who from the current Sisters she wanted to recruit to personally assist her destroy the farm entirely.
Tumblr media
- A month later and Isabella had already decreased the number of shipments that took place at Grace Field, which obviously helps raise the quality of the children by default, but it also means less death and gives those kids a chance to live longer.
Tumblr media
- She completely anticipated that Matilda, Jessica, Sienna & Scarlet were conspiring against her and caught them quite easily, as they were among the top scorers.
Tumblr media
- Each had a fair chance at becoming Moms but with those positions limited, it was obvious to figure out they were trying to force Isabella’s seat open by creating some suspicious activity to place on her almost perfect record. Unfortunately for the girls, our new Grandma is too smart for her own good and I love it.
Tumblr media
- The four women are apprehensive to join her insane plan to go against the farm, but Isabella assures them there’s no freedom if they follow the system’s rules and betray her. The harsh reality they’re all living in will continue unless they stop competing with one another and combine forces to defeat the true enemy.
Tumblr media
- To persuade them further, Isabella mentions the children they all gave birth to are still alive, bringing out an array of emotions from the women that they each thought they had buried deep down.
Tumblr media
- THIS! Just all of this is wonderful and shows just how much Isabella learned from her children who once defeated her.
Tumblr media
- To fully gain the women’s trust, she gives them Ray’s farewell note that he originally left in order to bait Krone, as proof she won’t double-cross them at any point.
Tumblr media
- I love the fact that she kept the note close to her because it acts just like all the other various toys and items she saved in her secret room back at plant 3. The original owners were all precious to her so she kept a piece of them behind to remember them in a place only she knew about. As I said before when mentioning her “I wish I could have just loved them normally” quote, all the love she had for her children had to be suppressed when she was under the system’s control, but that doesn’t mean she never cared. Because she did, and if I haven’t made at least that clear by now then I’m failing.
Tumblr media
- Can her intentions and love for her children be any more clear? (possibly, i’m not done with this darn post yet. how you guys holding up? i’m going a little insane at this point.)
Tumblr media
- Anyways! Second season didn’t make the rest of the story easy so apologies for any timeline mishaps as I switch between both anime and manga events from here on out.. like how in manga Isabella is informed of the escapee’s return to Grace Field via Peter, while the in the anime it’s her who helps lures them back with a fake transmission via the radio they stole.
Tumblr media
- Just before Emma & the others do return to Grace Field on November 13, Isabella finally reaches out to the farm’s many other Sisters to recruit them. She waited until the right moment to inform them of her crazy takeover plan so Peter wouldn’t become suspicious from all of headquarters acting/thinking differently (you know, like how Emma kept the jailbreak plan under wraps until the night of). These ladies also feel a bit wary and even think of Isabella’s offer as a joke, but with some real, heartfelt encouragement, she manages to win over every single woman to her side.
Tumblr media
- The moment when it was first revealed to us that she was not only still alive but was also promoted to Grandma is still so powerful.
Tumblr media
- She snaps Nat’s finger back into place after Peter broke it. (and considering emma’s group infiltrates the farm right after this, i’m pretty sure that ch170 with rallying the sisters took place before this..i think?)
Tumblr media
- Gave me a minor heart attack.
Tumblr media
- *CLAPS FRANTICALLY!!!* The moment she truly won me over.

Tumblr media
- While her betrayal against Peter in the manga is fantastic and quite possibly one of my favorite moments, the anime did give us a little something too. It shows Peter spewing utter nonsense to Emma about how she’s destined to fail, only for best girl to bite back with such a fantastic quote, and then Isabella drops the act and switches sides. While I agree Emma’s comeback is “wonderful,” it’s the English dub that completely wins me over in this scene by having Isabella comment “Now that’s my girl” instead, like bro.. hearing that makes me so happy.
Tumblr media
- For real dude, you have several highly skilled women pointing guns at you, I think her betrayal is crystal clear.
Tumblr media
- This is like the perfect example of how she had to conceal her feelings while bound by the system. She just misses these kids so much y’all but she can’t let her true emotions show yet.
Tumblr media
- Having her call Peter a boy is beyond hilarious to me. Also, how she disagrees with him on so many levels is excellent, like how he believes in experimenting on kids and having the right to call yourself their parent just because you created them, while Isabella believes in raising and loving children normally and that you earn that parent title by actually being part of their lives. To be fair they both inflicted pain on kids (Nat’s finger/Emma’s leg) but Peter’s action was a mistake in itself. Isabella got frustrated back when Krone even threatened to ship out the kids who discovered the secret, so you can bet she’s probably pissed off at this boy for harming one of her kids on purpose.
Tumblr media
- The best mother-daughter moment ever! It’s such a shame it never got truly animated since the second season decided not to give the children guns, but we get to see a small smile from Isabella after Emma decided to still call her “mom.”
Tumblr media
- The anime never gave Peter the chance to run away, like he (somehow) managed to do in manga, so we had the chance to see someone actually shoot at him. Well, in his general direction at least. Isabella lands a perfect shot not even a full second after he pulls out that disc. Accuracy on point.
Tumblr media
- Said this once or twice in the past in manga so I’m glad the anime brought it back.
Tumblr media
- Remains cautious and keeps her gun raised at Peter when Emma approaches him and rightfully so considering he still had his knife hidden at this point.
Tumblr media
- Refuses Emma’s offer to join the kids in the human world at first because she knows that her (& the sister’s) actions shouldn’t be forgiven so easily, but with some rather blunt sympathy from Ray and encouragement from her other children, she finally gives in.
Tumblr media
- This entire post summed up in one image.
Tumblr media
- She apologizes even though distancing herself from her kids and preparing them for death were just required of her role as a caretaker. She wouldn’t have done any of that in a normal world. (do i sound like a broken record yet? probably)
Tumblr media
- The emotion you hear in her voice during this entire dub scene hits my heart in all the right places.
Tumblr media
- She still thinks of Leslie after all this time and I think that’s real cute.
Tumblr media
- Her protective nature is on full display when she protects Emma from this bastard of a demon. A truly surprising and heartbreaking moment, considering this is the woman who’s survival used to be her top and only priority in the past, but now doesn’t hesitate to give her life in order to save her kid (and by extension that small girl emma saved. also, major heart attack for me).
Tumblr media
- Despite being critically injured, this woman still possess enough strength to hold back a demon twice her size. She doesn’t even pay any mind to its nonsense. Like the demon, people often think this is when redemption arc starts but I believe it started way back in ch37 when Isabella retrieved and hid the ropes the kids used to escape. Ever since she admitted defeat on the wall that night, she threw caution to the wind and began cheating the system in hopes to one day assist the kids achieve a brighter future. Despite all the work she’s done behind the scenes, Isabella believes there’s still so much more she can do to atone, so even though she’s already received the children’s forgiveness, she continues to assist them by jumping in and saving them directly from demons for once in her life.
Tumblr media
- Ma’am it’s sweet you’re so concerned with their safety, but we should be asking you that question ya know? (but then again emma was the same way after she woke up from her coma).
Tumblr media
- Knows that just apologizing and saving Emma isn’t enough to suddenly forgive all her actions and wants to do so much more for the children as a result. Even though I already acknowledged all her subtle and hidden moments, I wish we got to see her care for them more openly.
Tumblr media
- I simply can not read through ch177 and not get emotional. No matter how hard I try, I always feel tears start to form in my eyes. Oh my god, how cruel that death can be this beautiful. It’s so unfair.
Tumblr media
- *uses old chapter review because I’m too upset right now* “She apologizes for everything. For not treating him right and loving him as a mother normally would her own son. For making him despise his life so much and enduring so much pain that he thought the only escape was suicide.”
Tumblr media
- “She leaves him with one last wish to protect everyone, and that completely breaks me because you know exactly how much they both care for their family. Not only would they literally die for their family, but they would live for them too if someone asked. Truly like mother, like son.” (aaaaaahhhhh)
Tumblr media
- Her, umm.. ghost (along with Conny’s & Yuugo’s) help Ray reunite with Emma in 2049.
Tumblr media
- All my tears aside, the anime did something right by actually keeping her ALIVE!
Tumblr media
- Have you ever seen something so GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL in all your life?? This image is so powerful it literally tossed aside any salty feelings I had that night with how the second season ended. Seeing her like this grants me so much happiness y’all, it’s truly unbelievable. I still can’t get over it and hopefully I never will.
Tumblr media
Okay, now I’m done, thank god. Sorry this is like ridiculously long, especially since she’s absent for sooo many chapters. Also find it so hilarious how drastic my opinion of her changed from the beginning to now, from “bitch” to “oh my god I love her so much.” I know people will always have opposing opinions whether she’s actually a good mother or not and that’s totally fine. Wasn’t trying to convince y’all of that either because yes, some of her actions are real unforgivable, but she was suffering under the farm system too and just followed through with what she was trained to do in order to survive, but while other Sisters fought to climb ranks and help themselves survive, Isabella ultimately wanted the best for her children. The more power she gained, the more risks she took and once the system crashed so did her facade.
Tumblr media
An absolute queen.

That anaversary aizen looks absolutely fabulous, he looks like a figure skater xd.
I heard along time ago the last arc of the anime was being animated finally bc they pulled a 90s sailor moon were the last season was not either animated or dubbed untill decades later.
I recall near the end of the current 366 episodes there was an episode were the creapy demon ppl woke up in hell and we're all bitter, and there was the other guy who was like, iM cOmEiNg FoR u IChIgO, but then is never mentioned again after and I'm like, why? Why is lt there just plopted randomly into a different arc that seams unrelated.
And locking aizen up underground seems ok, but It deff won't hold, and he will. Escape, and he will kill, you either need that one spell from star, dubbed, the darkest spell of moon the undaunted, a powerfull dark spell that killed immortal beings, that came from best character, eclipsa, the queen of darkness.
We need that.
Or stick him I'm crystal like eclipsa was in star. Is there no one who could trap him in ice or crystal for all eternity.
How about throw him into the centre of a volcano trapped and caged , forverr being killed by heat?
I assume there's space travel, send I'm into a black whole, were a black whole don't fuckin care if your immortal or fat, you will die
:3
Yes, I love anniversary Aizen. His original octopus-butterfly hollow design was ugly so I'm glad he's back to being the fashion icon he is.
Locking Aizen up underground once is one thing, doing it twice after saying he got more powerful by just sitting there, and he escaped to battle the Quincy Soul King God... is another. I think he should have escaped at the end of the Quincy arc. That is the only feasibility.
I heard the anime is coming back for the Quincy arc as well, but because of COVID its probably going to be delayed. (I'm not gonna watch it until the Rain section of the arc then I'm dipping out. I'm only here for Zangetsu)
and funny that you mention that hell scene in the manga :)
-> spoilers for the new BLEACH 73 page anniversary chapter / thoughts/critique on it
So hey you had a premonition! Syazel .... returned? And his hole is outside of his body??? for some reason???
(I didn't understand the explanation or why / how that happens and what that means for the hollow)
And my friend and I were laughing because out of ALL the things. Kubo could do in this anniversary. He gave Syazel his dick back after going to hell. That is iconic. (that's where his hole was located, and now that its not on his body ... well...) This is the funniest thing Kubo has EVER pulled. Kudos to you, sir.
The entire internet is freaking out over Ukitake being in hell. Honestly Kubo has done far worse, and we've established that Soul Society is a corrupt system that hasn't changed, so I'm not surprised he would pull something like this.
At the same time, Kubo 1. cheated his audience. 2. continues to prove me right that he cannot bring himself to kill his characters
1. Hollows who have commit murder in their human life are sent to hell. Syazel and Aaorniero are two of these hollows, and yet, when they are killed, there is NO gates of hell scene. We see them there later in the hell chapter (which was more of a promotion for the fourth movie and I didn't believe it would hold any merit)
But the same goes for Ukitake. We never see the gates of hell take him. What, was hell late? Did hell's gates get lost like an uber before picking him up? It's bull. Withholding such vital information from your audience, not showing the gates of hell when they should pick up this soul IMMEDIATELY is ... I mean its a lie. Kubo lied to his audience.
2. Now we are told powerful shinigami are sent to hell when they die. First of all that sounds like a security threat. Wouldn't shinigami want revenge for that? Or attempt to escape? Why would they still hold loyalty after being sent to a prison of eternal suffering?
Also "Yhwach and Aizen" were the only ones keeping Hell's gates closed is way too convenient and doesn't really make any sense. I feel like Aizen should have deliberately gone to hell to retrieve powerful shinigami / hollows for his army instead of keeping it /closed/.
This is definitely a Kubo-doesn't-know-what-he's-doing-and-is -making- stuff-up-as-he-goes, but it might have a pinch of merit because of previous plot lines.... but either way, there's some big plot holes here, but again, its Kubo, so I expected nothing less.
Again, he can't kill off his characters. He introduced zombification, he introduced immortality through the hougyoku, he has Orihime and Hachigen's reversal / rejection abilities. He brought back Luppi, friggen.... a character who's entire upper half of his body was incinerated. Like.... come on. No. He's dead, you can't bring him back like that. That's a cop out and just weird. You're taking away consequences and grief.
(Also Yamamoto and Unohana deserve to be in hell far over Ukitake, they've done some fcked up stuff in their pasts unlike him)
Also Kubo's favorite character is Mayuri, which.... you're allowed to have a favorite problematic character. But Keeping said character alive and bared from the consequences of abusing his daughter, murdering innocents, and experimenting on your own squad members? Nah. Nope. Kill him, Kubo. Kill this dude.
(his weird attachment to Mayuri is probably why he keeps bringing Syazel back, since Syazel is Mayuri 2.0, but Syazel is the bad guy who does face consequences for his actions while Mayuri is not)
~
Also, I'm certain Kazui and Orihime are going to be THRILLED that their precious husband/dad is going to hell when he dies :)
(I just... Rukia teased Ichigo about leaving Orihime at home. She teased him about having a house wife who he leaves all the chores to. Orihime had two panels. She checks on her son who promised he would be at home and sleep. Kazui fcking breaks his promise like it never mattered to him and JUMPS out the window after pretending to sleep in front of his mother. ... An 8 year old... alone... in the middle of the night.)
Orihime is abandoned. She is not invited to SS, she is not informed of what is going on, her son leaves her.... I...
Orihime is a side character. She doesn't matter anymore. She hasn't mattered for a long, long time.
A part of me is glad she had little screen time, since she tends to waste it, but another part of me is embroiled with rage.
I've even see people try to defend this. "Orihime and Ichigo can't be together ALL the time, that's an unhealthy relationship!" and I'm like guys... that's not the point. The point is Orihime is not part of Ichigo's other life. Any shinigami stuff from now on is none of her business. She's going to stay at home while Kazui and Ichigo go off and save the world. Ichigo is going to be fighting by Rukia and Renji while Orihime watches from the sidelines, or worse, doesn't even know what is going on with her husband and son. Orihime is going to be uninformed and abandoned, because she has not proven she is capable of fighting by their sides(go on, @ me. I will fight this. She's a failure.), and also because she prefers a human life over a dead one. Which is ironic, because she married a dead man. Ichigo is a shinigami, and he will be one forever. god forbid she ever meets his Zanpaktou. She would tremble in fear at the monsters her husband harbors in his soul, especially when she realizes they don't care about her and would rather see her dead. (Zangetsu would absolutely kill Orihime. Not sure about Kazui, but Orihime has not accepted Zangetsu, she does not like either of them, and the feeling is assuredly mutual.) frick now I want to make a comic about this
Also still frustrated over Zangetsu's shikai / bankai regression. Kubo once again lied to his audience. Ichigo has no bankai. How ridiculous is that? The main character of BLEACH doesn't have a bankai. Insulting.
(RIP to Chad. He doesn't exist anymore. He's just gone. No mention, no cameo. Gone.)
Kazui is a demon child. That character from the novels? Hikone? They're the same character. Literally same personality, same power level. Its worse because Kazui is a liar. He constantly goes behind his parents' backs. He can summon creepy fish and creepy eyeballs and open portals like is ANYONE aware of this? How has SS not kidnapped Ichigo's son and experimented on him / locked away his powers yet? All substitute shinigami require a reiatsu controlling / spy badge to keep them in line. Where is Kazui's? Or is he just a weird fullbringer?
I was worried Kubo was gonna try and pull a knock off Boruto but luckily he kept the focus on Ichigo and the others. But that being said, Ichika and Kazui are now just... sort of there? Kazui was kinda just.... having his own adventure that doesn't matter to the plot at hand, and Ichika had some nice characterization at first but she just hid behind her dad the whole time.
I have a feeling Kazui is gonna step in at the last minute or do some major behind the scenes thing that indirectly interferes with the main plot so no one will realize how powerful and dangerous he actually is. Its sad because Ichika is the superior character in personality and likability, but she clearly is not going to have a bigger part in this.
Ichigo having a normal life after everything still feels extremely boring and uncomfortable to me. Everyone's like 'I'm still bLEACH!" but.... BLEACH just... doesn't feel like BLEACH anymore. It hasn't for a while now.
~~~
There's two new shinigami characters. Didn't care for the girl, but the Sign Language kid who talks to animals is adorable ... however... he just reminds me of Chad, and I just... it hurts knowing Chad has essentially been deleted. Chad and Orihime are officially benched. They have chosen the human world, and Orihime has given Ichigo his spawn so she has no more use/purpose to him anymore... ////sigh
~~~
Also. This is claimed to be a new "arc". So is the BLEACH manga coming back? What is happening. I thought Kubo was tired and didn't want to do BLEACH anymore. I thought Shounen Jump cut him off. People made so many excuses for Kubo and why the past two arcs have been so badly written the past 6 years and now almost everything they've attempted to defend him with has been revoked.
BLEACH is going to continue to screw up its plot lines and characters, so Its probably best for it to stay dead but I've seen a lot of Kubo stans drooling over this content, they're desperate for BLEACH's return, but its already given out all its possible revelations. There's really nothing else to top here. It's just going to make things up as it goes along ,and I'm not really here for half-assed writing like that, especially since the damage of rushing the previous manga has already been done. Kubo and Shounen Jump are riding off a money nostalgia. None of this was planned.
Honestly though.... overall feeling of this chapter, not as bad as it could have been.
Syazel stole the spotlight, and he's my friend's favorite character, so that's all that really matters.

Very good meta by lulubaii about the psychology of Maki's mother or generally any woman suffering from the systematic abuse of a patriarchal society and why she needs to be the one to deliver the last blow.
I'm sure it's already known that a lot of readers are not happy that Naoya was taken down seemingly out of the blue by an insignificant NPC and not someone from the main cast like Megumi or Maki. My take is exactly. Maki's mother had been so diminished by her clan that she's literally invisible and no one gives a crap about her suffering. It's not about the "feminist" slogan that I find many people diss and argue about online but forget as soon as they log off. It's about the real threat of personhood and opportunities being taken away from women you see everyday in the home, school, workplace or in the news. It could have even been your mother or grandmother. People often do not realize how patriarchal culture is so entrenched that it still affects decision-making and social behavior. It's an accepted, ongoing process of subjugation and women themselves usually are so accustomed or enclaved that they do not know how to speak out and may even support such treatment. Which Gege described very well in the relationship between Missus Zenin and her daughters. Mai and Maki are the fantasy that you wish would happen to misogynists but Missus Zenin is the real-life woman who needs to stand up and kill the system represented by Naoya but without outside intervention, it's often difficult or impossible to do so.
aidonotknow also put forward some excellent jjk metas but they're in Chinese. To paraphrase some of the main points from one of their metas about patriarchy and feminism:
How Naoya and Toji attempted to shape their ego and identifies by the male gaze or "be one of the boys". But to Gojo, it's all meaningless (lol) because the gap between him and other humans cannot be measured.
The Zenin mentality about how respect is only won by showmanship of strength, in this case, cursed techniques.
Due to the blind worship of power and strength, the clan members are nothing but tools with the militarization of men as soldiers and the male objectification of women. Cue back to Naoya's comment about what a good woman should be like.
How the lives of Mai, Maki and their mother had been ruined by this mindset. Mai tried to acquiesce like her mother to survive but in the end was forced to self-sacrifice for Maki. (Hands-up those whose parents did not have a good childhood and have to fight for a better life for their children)
As with the real-life struggle for women's' rights, Maki won but by the yardstick of traditional male strength, ironically emphasizing the idea that "strong women" are those who behave like men and further legitimizing the subjugation of those with feminine traits (whether it be men or women).
Hello, lore anon! Another kudos for compiling a good reading!
To be honest, I'm not the right person to discuss the matter of feminism, since I don't read on that topic a lot, but all in all, I think the female characters are handled pretty well considering everything. And yes, I actually like that the one to end Naoya is the woman who is thought to be most insignificant, especially since he put her down (her being Maki and Mai's mom) by discussing about her daughters so crassly and vulgarly with her.

Octavian Won’t Let Anyone Die (Well, at least his comrades)
I’m going to start this by stating the obvious: killing everyone was a morally reprehensible plan. I, personally, believe in exhausting all options before enacting violence. I also believe that if you can intimidate a person enough you can avoid violence (like “those who wish for peace, prepare for war” means that if you don’t want anyone to attack you - you gotta be the scarier person).
That being said, we’re going to discuss the events leading up to August 1st.
Octavian is a General
To his right, reports and maps were strewn across a low table. To his left, a marble altar heaped with fruit and gold offerings, no doubt for the gods.
I just really like this bit because it is literally a symbol of Octavian’s two main skills: strategy and foreseeing. Unfortunately for Octavian one of them isn’t working - but the other is. If you need more proof about Octavian being a skilled commander, I have other posts.
Octavian’s Plan A
The entire Twelfth Legion was camped in the northernmost field. They’d dug in with their usual military precision - ten-foot-deep trenches and spiked earthen walls around the perimeter, a watchtower on each corner armed with ballistae. Inside, tents were arranged in neat rows of white and red. The standards of all five cohorts curled in the wind. [...] He was intentionally provoking the Greeks, hoping for battle.
So we see that Octavian wants to win the fight without going against Reyna's orders. As long as he doesn’t attack the camp, he can fight the Greeks all he wants. I would even say that he probably gave them a couple “opportunities” to compel them to attack. Of course, they didn’t. So kudos to the Greeks.
“It’s good news, my friend,” Octavian assured him. “We need the extra manpower.”
“Murderers. Thieves. Traitors.”
“Loyal demigods,” Octavian said, “who owe their position to me.”
Yeah, Octavian is definitely trying to beef up his allies here. But I suspect it’s because, if what we’ve been told is correct, half the legion hates him. What I want to know is where these demigods ended up. Are they rejected by the legion after Octavian death? If that was a possibility, why didn’t they fight tooth and nail for him - after all, they wouldn’t have come back unless they wanted to be accepted again. I know Mike calls them “Murderers. Thieves. Traitors.” but I would say the vast bulk were probably the third, i.e. the deserters of the Titan War.
Plan Regarding Gaia
“But the Earth Mother-
“Has been stirring because of the war between the Greek and Roman camps, yes? The gods are incapacitated, yes? And how do we solve that problem, Mike? We eliminate the division. We wipe out the Greeks. We return the gods to their proper manifestation as Roman. Once the gods are restored to their full power, Gaia will not dare rise.”
This is basically Octavian’s statement. I mean. He’s wrong per se. It’s the violent option, for sure. But the Greeks had the chase to throw the Seven under the bus - to say they weren’t involved. And they have admitted to starting the war at this point. So, yeah, violence begets violence. And even our heroes consider killing Octavian (as seen with Frank) on multiple occasions.
What happened to the Wolves?
Reyna shook her head. “Wolves are not front-line fighters. I don’t think she would help Octavian. Her wolves might be patrolling Camp Jupiter, defending it in the legion’s absence, but I just don’t know…”
So, despite what Reyna says here, in the previous book, Octavian did have wolves coming to his side to help. Piper saw them in her knife. And it's one of the reasons why I think Octavian and Lupa have a strong relationship - because Lupa does offer support. She doesn’t join the fight herself, sure, and we don’t get mention of the wolves in the final battle. But that doesn’t mean the wolves aren’t working with Octavian.
Octavian Wants to Save Everyone
“If you want me as your prisoner, fine. I’ll go willingly and face Octavian’s stupid trial.”
“A fine offer.” [...] “You really don’t know what Octavian has planned, do you? He’s been busy pulling in favours, spending the legion’s money.”
Reyna clenched her fists. “Octavian has no right-”
“He has the right of power,” Bryce said. “You forfeited your authority when you ran off to the ancient lands. On August first, your Greek friends at Camp Half-Blood will find out what a powerful enemy Octavian is. I’ve seen the designs of his machines… Even I’m impressed.”
Bryce really out here boasting about his friend.
Anyway, back to serious. I think we can say two things. Octavian wants Reyna back alive - to undergo trial. Once more, he acts with a dual purpose. We know that he doesn’t want her to die because of the scene in House of Hades. But we also know that he needs her out of the way until the war is done. Which is why he goes for the trial option. She would be temporarily stripped of her authority while the trial is underway.
Octavian’s Plan B
“Don’t worry, old friend. Our siege teams have the Greek camp surrounded. Our eagles have complete air superiority. The Greeks aren’t going anywhere until we’re ready to strike. In eleven days, all my forces will be in place. My little surprises will be prepared. One August first, the Feast of Spes, the Greek camp will fall.”
So, obviously Plan A hasn’t worked. So Octavian has moved on to his other plans. We know that 1st August is when his onagers will be ready. They are Plan B.
“Artemis knows a lot about missile weapons. She told us Octavian has order some… surprises for Camp Half-Blood. He’s used most of the legion’s treasure to purchase Cyclopes-built onagers.” [...] “If Artemis is right, six of these machines will be rolling into Long Island tomorrow night. That’s what Octavian has been waiting for. At dawn on August first, he’ll have enough firepower to completely destroy Camp Half-Blood without a single Roman casualty. He thinks that’ll make him a hero.”
Alright, we’re going to ignore the mass death for a moment, and I’m going to say this. If a general can annihilate the enemy without a single ally's life lost, that’s a damn good general. That’s like - crazy good. But I think we should also note this theme that will come up a couple times, “without a single Roman casualty”. Remember, many people in Camp Jupiter hate Octavian. Especially in the Fourth and Fifth. Yet, he has resolved to come up with a plan that will protect them all. No one dies (except for the enemy, of course).
Like, yeah, as I’ve said because Octavian is driven by wrath. But he wants to see the Greeks whipped out, at least in part, because his city was attacked. People were hurt - some people probably died. And on the flip side of this, Octavian cannot bear the idea of anyone in the legion losing their life in this war. If this was on the flip side, could you understand the other legionaries who chose to follow Octavian? Can you understand why the Romans might call him a ‘hero’ after his death?
Frank muttered a Latin curse. “Except he’s also summoned so many monstrous ‘allies’ that the legion is completely surrounded by wild centaurs, tribes of dog-headed cynocephali, and who knows what else. As soon as the legion destroys Camp Half-Blood, the monsters will turn on Octavian and destroy the legion.”
I don’t like how Frank says a curse here - because that could mean more than just swearing. Curses are a thing in Roman religion. But I don’t think Riordan actually meant that Frank cursed Octavian at this moment. Though - as we know - Frank definitely isn’t opposed to killing the guy. So, maybe?
Anyway, the Plan. I actually think the monsters could be further proof of Octavian’s desire to protect everyone he knows and cares for.
If Plan B, the onagers, don’t work. The legion will be in the midst of battle. That’s where I think the monsters kick in. Mercenaries are a common enough thing to use in warfare, and mercenaries always get the worst gig. You send them in to die, effectively. It’s quite likely that was what the dogs and centaurs were for. The Greeks attack them - they fight an army of monsters before they even reach the legion. Thus, no legionaries have to die. And even better, you can pay the monsters with the blood of your enemies! It’s a win-win (from a certain perspective).
The Parley
She caught a glimpse of a silver wake in the moonlight, half a mile to the west. A black motorboat was speeding towards them with no running lights. Reyna hoped it was a mortal vessel. Then it got closer, and Reyna’s hand tightened on the hilt of her sword. Glinting on the boat’s prow was a laurel wreath design with the letters SPQR.
“The legion has sent a welcome committee.”
Nico followed her gaze. “I thought the Romans didn’t have a navy.”
“We didn’t,” she said. “Apparently Octavian has been busier than I realised.”
I love how Octavian just went ham on actually making their army stronger. Hey, let’s make ourselves a navy because our distrust of the sea is stupid. Hey, let’s make the hugest catapults ever because “go big or go home”. I think it’s further proof of how Octavian acts like a general, because could you imagine a general with free reign on the money? Yeah, more weapons! more ships! YAS.
Regardless, Octavian sends Mike to parley. One - he knows when and where Reyna was going to arrive. Or at least, they saw her coming, decided to parley, and sent the crew out all in the time that it took Reyna to plan and chat with Pegasus.
But my main point is, even on the eve of August 1st, Octavian is willing to consider a non-violent approach with Reyna. He doesn’t go himself, likely because he’s worried she’ll kill him.
“Reyna! I’ve got orders to arrest you and confiscate that statue. I’m coming aboard with two other centurions. I’d prefer to do this without bloodshed.”
[...]
Michael’s backup centurions were Leila from the Fourth Cohort and Dakota from the Fifth. Strange choices…. Leila, daughter of Ceres, wasn’t known for her aggressiveness. She was usually quite level headed. And Dakota… Reyna couldn’t believe the son of Bacchus, the most good-natured of officiers, would side with Octavian.
These people are not a war party. They aren't really an arresting force either, despite their orders. If Octavian intended violence, he would not have sent the three of them. Even Reyna thinks it’s weird for him to choose these three. Plus, why just the three of them? Romans don’t usually act in small groups and certainly not three centurions at once.
Octavian Wants to Protect All the Romans, even those who hate him
“You can’t blame the officers for falling in line. Octavian has a plan to win, and it’s a good plan. At dawn those onagers will destroy the Greek camp without a single loss of Roman life. The gods should be healed.”
The Plan Goes South
Of course, this parlay was a mistake.
Because it allowed for Mike to be knocked out and for Dakota & Leila to betray him. Next, Dakota and Leila ignite a fight between them and monsters, distracting half the legion - and likely causing many injuries and deaths.
Anyone who argues that Octavian brought the monsters in for the fight - only for them to turn against them, please note this. It was Nico, Dakota and Leila who attacked the monsters first. Such a tactic, arguably, only hurt the legion. Nico does, later, consider trying to assassinate Octavian which is a plan I agree with. It would mean the least amount of deaths (page 415). In fact, Nico doesn’t do this because Will shows up.
Anyway, we all know what happens after this point. See my scene breakdown for that.

Recently, the author Gosho Aoyama has claimed that the ending of Haibara will be " Surprising" for everyone ?? What does that mean ?? It is not clear if it is a bad or good ending !!! Do you think that Haibara will never come back to her adult form as Miyano Shiho and stay as a kid.. and make a relationship with Mitsu ?? And if Haibara take the permanent antidote.. do you think that she will be punished and jailed since she was a member of BO?? or she dies in the end ??
Oh good God there is a lot to unpack here but thank you for your questions and I'm soo glad you brought them up! I’ll try to answer them as best as I can 😄
So yes, Gosho did say Haibara’s ending will surprise everyone but I also remember him saying Detective Conan’s ending will be happy. Not to mention Haibara is a veryyy popular character (if not the most popular female character on the show), so I find it hard to believe that she’ll just end up being killed off. I don’t think Gosho would do that to us.
Now when it comes to her remaining as a kid, I kind of talked about how I feel about it here . In short I believe she deserves to regain control of her life as Shiho and not remain as Haibara. Also this fan comic about Shiho explaining to Shinichi why she didn’t want to remain as Haibara is beautiful in every way and I think you should take a look at it.
But to add to that, I refuse to believe she’s willing to remain as Haibara. Whenever people say she’ll get a chance to relive a proper childhood it irritates me 😂 I mean she’s still mentally an adult. I cannot imagine having to always act like a child, go to school and relive high school (diabolical if you ask me) when I’m mentally grown up.
Personal opinions aside, there is one moment where it was hinted she’d be willing to stay as Haibara.  In the movie Captured in her Eyes she basically said she'd love to stay as Haibara IF she lost her memory. This is not canon and she did say after that she was joking but she tends to "joke" when she actually means what she says.
Tumblr media
But since then, Haibara’s character has grown significantly. And these developments ⬇️ have me believing she's most likely going to take the antidote.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jodie interpreted why Haibara refused the witness protection program was because she found a family in her friends. So with that logic, shouldn't that make sense for her to stay as Haibara? Ummm not really. She didn't just stay for the friendships, in fact she was so moved by Ayumi's words that she realised she has to face her fate and keep fighting. If she doesn't take the antidote, she's basically accepting what she was forced to become because of the organisation without facing her struggles and embracing her past. She'll technically be running away from her true self and erasing any link she has to her family whom she loves so much.
And tbh if Gosho decided she should lose her memory and remain a kid, I’ll be extremely disappointed. That would be a very poor and rushed ending and all her character developments would have been for nothing. Also I don't understand why some people equate her returning as Miyano Shiho to her cutting off the detective boys from her life. If anything, she'll probably continue living with the professor who she now looks up to as a father figure, while still remaining close and looking after the detective boys.
Now for the relationship with Mitsuhiko, I just can’t see how that can happen. He is a child for God’s sake! No matter how smart or responsible he is, he is still a CHILD. And whenever people say she should be with Mitsuhiko it makes me wonder, do they expect it to happen right now when she is still Haibara or are they saying when they eventually grow up? The first one is no way because she’s mentally an adult and he is a child and that is a crime waiting to happen. The second option means she’ll stay a child and I already expressed how I feel about that. Also I hate to break it to the AixMitsuhiko fans but Haibara loves all the detective boys like her younger siblings. She is the older sister / senpai of the group and she’s never displayed any romantic feelings for Mitsuhiko, nor do I think she’d develop them in the future simply because she views him as nothing but a baby brother.
Now on to the juiciest question that you asked, “Will she be jailed because she was an ex BO member?” I have a lot to say on this so please bear with me😁
We now know that Rei was planning on handing her back to the BO in the Bell Tree Train arc (see here). Thankfully, that didn’t happen thanks to Conan’s big brain thinking making Rei believe that Shiho died. Now, he is yet to meet Haibara and discover the truth about her (I cannot wait for this to happen!) but when he does, this is how I imagine things will go down:
He’ll despise her because he’ll think of her as a criminal who worked for the BO and developed a deadly drug. However, he won’t be able to hand her back to the BO since he was the one who confirmed her death. Handing her back would only have the BO question his credibility / loyalty and possibly jeopardise his future there. Therefore, he’s left with one option; take her into PSB custody and interrogate her. But, there’s no way Conan, the Kudo family and even quite possibly Akai would just stand aside and not intervene. At the same time, I doubt Rei will simply believe her if she said “she was forced to make a poison” (even Conan didn’t believe her when they first met). So how will he back off? These are my theories:
I feel the tapes Elena recorded packed way more than just the drug’s true purpose. She may have also recorded what the organisation forced her and Atsushi to go through. And with the fact that Vermouth seemed to blame her animosity for Shiho on her parents, it is quite possibly Elena mentioned Vermouth on the tapes. If Haibara brings up those tapes and Rei heard them, first of all he’ll get closure (because he loved Elena as his own mother) and finding out about Vermouth’s link to the Miyanos, he can investigate them more. I don’t think it’ll be difficult for him to uncover the truth about her family especially since he knows Vermouth’s secret and that couldn’t have been easy.
If Haibara doesn’t bring up the tapes, I think Akai will step in by asking Rei to hand over Vermouth (since she’s an American citizen) if he wants to take Haibara. Rei would never agree to that because Vermouth provides him with invaluable help and support in the organisation, so he’ll be forced to let Haibara go.
And for my final theory, just like how the Kudo family struck a deal with Rei to work with Akai (I reeaallly want Gosho to reveal what their talk was about), they’ll probably do the same thing to protect Haibara and in time, Rei will learn the truth about her past.
So basically in the end, I don’t think she’ll be arrested. I’d like to think once Rei learns the truth about her and her family’s past, he’ll be relieved to have received closure (because he loved Elena so much) and subsequently decide to protect Haibara. Also Gosho hinted Rei and Haibara will eventually get along so the probability of her being arrested is low.
Haibara’s ending is something I’m really looking forward to and I’ll be crushed if she isn’t given the ending she deserved (there is plenty of room for her ending to be ruined so fingers crossed that doesn’t happen). I picture her returning as Shiho, staying with the Professor, slowly warming up to Mary and Sera (I can’t begin to imagine how she’ll feel when she finds out they’re related) and maybe even go on to be a narcotics agent. Why narcotics agent? (All explained here ). When it comes to her love life, God knows what will happen, but the Mitsuhiko pair is highly unlikely to happen. Also, I don’t see why she has to end up with someone. Her happy ending doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll be with someone. In fact...
Having a family and friends she cares about.
Being free to live her life without constantly looking over her shoulder
Confronting Gin for killing her sister and whatever history they shared (I’m so mad GinxSherry has fizzled out without being answered. I need to know the truth about their past!!)
Finding peace and accepting her past
....are all enough reasons to give her the happy ending she deserves to have.
I hope this long speech helped answer your questions 😂. I honestly enjoyed writing it so, thank you so much for letting me do this 🖤😁

Turning Red was fun, I wanna talk about it
Disclaimer 1: This rant will not be fully positive, and it will especially not be fully negative. I will just talk about what I want to talk about respectfully
Disclaimer 2: I’m not Chinese, I’m Romanian. So this post will definitely not be about the movie’s culture portrayal, and you have to keep this in mind when I’ll talk in my perspective (I also recommend watching reviews and analyses from people who are related to the movie’s culture if you’re curious, they can be very informative and fun!)
  With that aside, let’s start
I watched the movie not long after it was released, and I quite enjoyed it! And, after I posted here a very long rant (about an other series, not related with this post) and watched a video about someone analyzing the movie Turning Red, I thought I can take this opportunity and do a shorter rant
The first thing I want to talk about is the visual. Like, my God, the colors are so pretty and everything looks so soft and lighthearted! The sparkly eyes were definitely something that I really enjoyed, because it made me think of classic cartoons, fitting very well with the vibes the movie wanted to give!
The characters were also lively and fun. One thing that I especially enjoyed was the bond between them, since it felt true and natural, like how friends are. They help each other, play together and just vibe
I also like how Mei and her mother have an honest bond of caring, even if they’re not on the same page. I can feel that the creator of the movie wanted to portray a complicated relationship between family and friends, and I can say that this aspect of the film was handled well
I related to Mei being a very competent child with an overprotective mother. I don’t see this aspect often, so seeing her struggles with getting a new perspective outside of her comfort place and having the choice of accepting the change or staying the same, while being true to herself, was really nice
Also, I will not go into the discussion about the portrayal of period, because I was luckily informed about it at an early time when it happened to me, and I’ve never seen it as a big deal (I’m honestly more confused on why others make a big deal about it. Guys, it’s just biology)
Overall, I enjoyed how colorful, cute, funny and over the top it was, and I’m definitely considering rewatching it in the future! But, no series is perfect, and now I get to talk about the things I was ehh about
Honestly, the things I will talk about did not affect me that much as ruining my experience of the movie, so kudos for that!
The first thing I want to mention is Mei’s voice. Don’t get me wrong, the timbre of the voice fits very well! I just noticed the voice was a little monotone with emotion
It did fit when Mei was acting composed and calm, but most of the movie she’s showing a lot of complicated emotions, and that’s when I noticed a lack of strength in feelings, more notable when she cried or was angry. But I don’t think this means the voice actor was inexperienced honestly, because this can easily be caused by the direction they were given
Another thing that I want to talk about is the moment of betrayal, aka the moment when Mei went to her mother instead of her friends. This would be the most notable issue for me, because I’m not really a fan of “betraying your friend” trope in general
My main issue was that they were Mei’s besties, and they were left aside and forgave her very fast after (which depending on how you were at that age, you may find this realistic or unrealistic). This didn’t really go anywhere, and I felt it was put there for the purpose of having a reason for the girls to go to the concert without Mei, and having a dramatic moment in the movie overall
I would have personally liked if Mei tried to talk to her mother, but she wouldn’t have listened, because it would also make sense considering how she acted at the notebook event. And if when she was taken back, Mei would have told her friends to go to the concert without her for her sake, for the effort they made together, this could have made that her friends did go to the concert, but you would see that they’re bummed out because Mei’s not there
And about the fact if the bully was too easily forgiven or not, well this is a little complicated. Yes, he did make fun of them many times. Yes, he did act like an asshole many times. But, you have to consider the part when Mei, as a big red panda, jumped on him in the scary/angry phase and actually wounded him. Honestly, I’m surprised he didn’t act scared of them (or of Mei) after that whole event, because it might have been terrifying for a kid to go through that
Does this excuse his behavior? Nah. But you have to keep in mind that they’re very young, they still don’t know fully about what’s morally right and wrong at that age. Him going to them and saying that he’s sorry for making fun of them would have been enough to be completely honest
The last thing I want to talk about is the exaggeration of events, which is the thing that I saw many people complain about
I have to tell you: I think the characters’ actions were pretty realistic. That’s just how kids act, searching for interest, entertainment, fun, and being imprevisible with how they hold grudges. I think the impression that makes these thing exaggerated is the fact that we see things in Mei’s perspective, and as a kid, many things hit or feel bigger than they truly are
And about her mother being that overprotective, I don’t have a problem with that. I can understand it, especially since I’ve seen people’s opinion that are from that culture
The only thing that I can talk about tho, is the time her mother entered the school to give her pads, but probably not in the way you think I will
You see, I do understand her being that stubborn to bring her the pads, especially since periods can be very messy. But what I’m sketchy about is..
How did she enter the school?
The guard didn’t look like he knew she was in, and schools usually have guards around the entrance for protection (because the school has a lot of kids after all), so the option is… that she jumped over the fence? That high fence?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s believable for a child to jump the fence because they will jump over anything if they’re stubborn enough, but I’m unsure about… her jumping over the fence? In that outfit? And looking perfectly fine after?
You guys saw the fence, right?
It comes to the point of questioning how practical it is, not how exaggerated it is. And I personally would have seen more believable for her to convince the guard for letting her in, or going pass through him. Honestly, it would have been funny if she was chased around by the guard while calling for Mei, and very believable for Mei to react devastated because of it
Going back to the exaggeration topic. Even if I don’t mind it, I think it’s fair for other people to do so. If many things are exaggerated constantly, it can be overwhelming or harder to get attached. And that can be a problem when you have to get to the serious part of the story, because it may not hit properly
Do I think the movie should have done things differently? Not really. Yeah, they could have made the atmosphere less exaggerated, but that’s just how the movie was meant to be. There’s no perfect method of storytelling, that’s why there are that many. This method has its downsides, but it has its benefits as well, and that’s alright
And it’s alright if there are people who don't like it as well. We’re all different, and we have to be aware when there’s something that’s made for us or not
So yeah, that’s what I wanted to talk about
.
