My snack of Kueh Bingka Ubi or Baked Tapioca/Cassava Cake (烤木薯糕) with a cup of less sweet milk tea. This traditional Malay/Nyonya kuih (kueh) is semi-soft, chewy and fragrant. It has an inviting aroma from the pandan leaves, eggs and coconut milk. More importantly it’s extremely easy to make and it’s delicious.

Sapphira Cake House and Cafe.
Tumblr media
Sapphira Cake House is a must try café to indulge your craving for Malay authentic dessert especially their sweet and satisfying cake lapis for all occasion.
Established in 2004 as a family operated joint specializing in traditional Malay delicacies, featuring all freshly baked kueh talam, food & cakes. The talent behind Sapphira Cake House is a self taught baker who developed her skills in making Kuih by self studying books and enrolled into professional baking courses. Her early work was only tested on family and friends as her hobby and eventually she began to receive commissions.
The sweetness and moist texture of the cakes will melt in your mouth and will share satisfaction with every taste buds.
Tumblr media
Upon entering the shop, I was greeted by the welcoming ‘’aunties’’ that will happily serve you. Order for the cakes can be made as you tour the cake choices presented in the woven rattan basket (Their signature presentation) covered with clear dome. Hence, the attractive colour of the kuih will catch your attention and place it in your order list. The prices varies from BND0.90 to BND1.90 each. Each of the cake will be cut to 3 pieces. Thus, each kiuh is sufficient for two.
Tumblr media
My most recommended cake is Lapis Masam Manis @ BND1.80 each. This kek lapis will give you a hitch of sour taste but will leave you with a sweet after taste.
Tumblr media
If you crave for something chocolat-y, with a bit of crunch along with the aromatic pandan flavour, Kek Batek Pandan  @ BND1.90 each should be included in you order. Though it sound so sweet, Sapphira’s Kek Batik Pandan has the right sweetness to satisfy your craving.
Tumblr media
Looking for a family high tea bringing along your children? Worry no more as Sapphira Cake House’s Lapis Nutella @ BND1.90 each will be your kid’s favorite. One will not be enough (P/s: Kids will end up hyperactive with post-lapis nutella) and this is one of my favorite as well as it released the child in me :)
Tumblr media
The Classic Bingka Ubi Kayu @ BND0.90 each. The rich flavor from the coconut milk and the texture of grated coconut complimenting the sweetness of the cassava, makes this desert has a unique flavor and taste.
Tumblr media
“Gula Anau” sugar was and continued to be a very important ingredient for local delicacies such as Kek Mata Kucing @ BND1.80 each. However, the taste of this cake is not as sweet as its sound but you can taste the aromatic after taste from the gula anau and you will for sure dig in for more.
Best to be serve with the classic “Kopi Kampung”
To balance out the sweetness of the authentic Malay delicacies, it is best to be serve with the classic “Kopi Kampung”, which is a traditional coffee without sugar or if  you are not a coffee drinker, teh ‘O’ panas also known as hot tea without sugar will do as well. The sweetness of the cake will complement the bitterness of the coffee or tea.
Sapphira Cake House and Café also serve other dishes and meals in their menu such as Bruneian’s favorite Buttermilk Chicken ;) I will for sure come back for more.
Signing off, TheSignature.

There’s something for every palate at @Rempapa_SG by Chef Damian D'Silva and OUE Restaurants, but special mention goes to their to-die-for 🌟Kueh Platter. It’s an assortment that changes daily and very affordable priced (starts $6 for 4pcs to $15 for 12pcs), so I won’t be surprised if these #kueh are all snatched up by dinner. Newfound favs include the purple fried mung bean Ang Ku Kueh and the Pulut Bingka (Glutinous Rice Bingka) that adds extra oomph with that dense, rich texture under a nicely browned cap. 😍 #FindNewFood #RempapaSG (at Rempapa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXPvU87P36Y/?utm_medium=tumblr

A crispy crusted, caramelised top and edges Kueh Bingka Ubi with gula melaka. There are 2 versions of this kueh, one with grated coconut for an added texture wrapped and steamed in banana leaves, we called it Belebat. And this is the other without, and baked. But both with that unique flavour of gula melaka. I loike! ❤ Setahun kakachi tunggu, baru dapat makan wehhh 🥲 (at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CK6G0aMBbaC/?igshid=1b7huu64qdjrn

#RawChefYin visits Li Er Cafe Penang! @liercafe We actually wanted to eat at Evergreen Vegetarian House but they're closed on Wednesdays so we were walking towards IE Organic Veggie Cafe when the Nyonya Kueh signboard caught my eye. I thought we'd grab some kueh since nyonya kueh is traditionally vegan as they use coconut milk and usually no eggs (the non-kaya ones). We ended up having our full breakfast there since they offered vegetarian curry noodles and mee jawa too. This is what we ordered: 1. Kuih Sago (in blue) 2. Kuih Bingka Ubi Kayu (one of my all time favourite nyonya kueh) 3. Kuih Kosui 4. Kuih Talam RM2.20 per pack 5. Mee Jawa Vegetarian (no egg, no milk) RM5.50 6. Luo Han Guo Hot (drink) RM2.00 I liked how the kueh wasn't overly sweet. We got to chat with Kei Vin who explained that they've reduced the sugar. Their kueh talam uses natural colouring from pandan leaves. Mr Jazz Guitarist enjoyed the mee jawa. Kei Vin also assured me there's no added sugar and the sauce's sweetness is from the natural ingredients such as pumpkin and tomato. Farewell Ondeh Ondeh (椰丝球), I am going to miss putting you into my mouth. The block where the bakery was located had been torn down to make way for a new multi-function complex and the owner of the bakery had decided to retire. No more cheap and good palm sugar sweetened desiccated coconut filled glutinous rice balls to snack on. :( The triangle piece is the Steamed Tapioca/Cassava Cake (蒸木薯糕) or Kueh Ubi Kayu in Malay. It similar to the Kueh Bingka Ubi but is steamed instead of baked.

Occasionally mum will buy this Baked Tapioca Cake (烤木薯糕) or Cassava Cake (S$0.90) back from her marketing trip. The recipe is pretty simple and I have attached a video (not mine) of how to make the Kuih Bingka Ubi.

Sweet and slightly chewy Kuih Bingka Ubi (烤木薯糕) with a cup of less sweet milk tea. The caramelized surface gave it a more complex taste than just plain sweetness with the added fragrance of coconut milk.
Tumblr media
Although the English name for it is Baked Tapioca Cake (Cassava Cake), this is actually a Kueh or Kuih (粿) which are bite-sized snack or dessert foods commonly found in Southeast Asia.

Moist Baked Tapioca Cake or Cassava Cake; Malays called this snack Kuih Bingka Ubi. The recipe calls for just a few simple ingredients of grated tapioca, eggs, sugar, salt, coconut milk and water. You can easily find the recipe online.
