As your bones lose density, the only way you will protect them is by keeping your muscle mass; building strength in middle age is part of what will define the shape and tempo of your old age. “
When 50-year-old Anna Jenkins, the founder of We Are Fit Attitude (Wafa), a woman-only health and fitness club, looked online for images of older women exercising, she was irritated by the pitiful size of the weights: the stock image is of a woman with grey hair lifting a 1kg weight, as if doing so were some kind of milestone. My personal bugbears are the photos in which there is a personal trainer with an expression of infinite patience next to the older woman, as if the latter is weak and half witted.
Stock photos are the internet’s idea of what the world should look like, sets of generic images intended to illustrate articles and advertising, often revealing more worldview than they probably set out to. There are famously a lot of photos of white women laughing near salad, meant for healthy eating content, but also reinforcing inane cheer and self-denial as cornerstones of femininity. If fitness imagery of the young is all about aspiration – six packs, muscle definition and impossible body fat percentages – fitness imagery of older people is almost anti-aspirational. Its message is: “You probably can’t do anything at all, but look over here, there’s a lady managing this tiny thing.”
Jenkins runs the Wafa classes remotely and in person for women ranging from their late 30s to their mid-70s. One Saturday, at a class in Merton, south London, they decided to create a new set of photos, repopulate the ecosystem of stock photographs, so that when you search for “older women exercising”, you will be able to see what that really looks like. “These are proper weights,” says Annette Hinds, 60. “We’re not pussyfooting about.”
Tumblr media
Jenkins went into group work and coaching from personal training because she had noticed that, in the gym: “Women would go straight to the cardio machine because they knew how it worked. It’s a frightening environment when you think you don’t belong, when you’re unhappy in your body shape. But they didn’t need more cardio – at 45-plus your body needs strength work. Especially during the menopause. It’s just a fact.”
As your bones lose density, the only way you will protect them is by keeping your muscle mass; building strength in middle age is part of what will define the shape and tempo of your old age. But as Glenda Cooper, 51, who usually does this class remotely five times a week, says, there is more to it than that. “Women at this time of life have parents we’re caring for. I’ve got two kids. You don’t want to take up too much space, you feel invisible anyway, you don’t make time for yourself. It’s so important to have a sense of your own strength, which I think is absent from the rest of our lives.”
Tumblr media
The atmosphere is fierce: as Lorraine Turner, 59, says: “I never used to think I was competitive, but later in life, I’ve realised that I am. I get a lot out of it if I push myself more.” Karen Silvestri, 60, remarks archly: “My husband’s a chef so I eat a lot and drink a lot. I still manage to retain this normal shape.”
Palmer’s daughter paid her a compliment on her butt the other day: “She said it wasn’t flat like a lot of women my age.” Downward comparison is very motivating, and it is also fun to watch when people are so unabashed about it.
“We’re a funny bunch, women, aren’t we?” Teresa Klasener, 61, says. She was very active until she got rheumatoid arthritis, then it all hit the skids until she started with Wafa two years ago. “We have all these mental blocks, we don’t prioritise ourselves, but once we’re in a group, we’ll fly.”
Jenkins says: “When I first became a personal trainer, I’d see a lot of women who were yo-yo dieters, and it was often because they were trying to be skinnier than their bodies were meant to be. I think exercise makes you confident in your shape as it is.” That might be the ultimate break with the visual norms of the fitness industry, that these are images of strength and exertion for their own sake, not for how they’ll make you look in spaghetti straps.
“I never knew what people were talking about with the endorphin thing,” Redford says. “And now, I do feel a sense of joy and self-congratulation, knowing that I just fucking went for it.”

So I follow Claire Ridgway's Anne Boleyn Files and she has a few interesting alternative videos on what would have happened if Anne Boleyn had given birth to a son and not been executed. I am curious what you think may have happened to Mary had Anne given birth to a son that was acknowledged by everyone as Prince of Wales. Would she have been restored to the Succession or not?
It's hard to say perhaps Henry would have made Mary legitimate again but I can't see him doing that without putting Elizabeth and her new brother's legitimacy in danger. Maybe he would have married her off elsewhere?
Claire thinks the 1553 Crisis probably would have been avoided had Anne's son inherited the throne. I tend to agree with her son on the throne even if that son were to die young the Crown would still pass to Elizabeth. The Lady Jane Grey Coup would have been avoided.
Well, Mary's counsel from the Emperor's representative was to acknowledge Anne as Queen once/if she had a son. She did ultimately follow his counsel in the summer of 1536 when it came to acknowledging the religious supremacy, the legal invalidity of her parents' marriage and her own bastardy (and renouncing any claim to the throne thereby), so one could plausibly assume she would've done the same here. Many Marians insist she would never have done so; I myself don't find that scenario plausible, unless she was already on the other side of England at the point of her continued stance, in one of Charles V's realms and under his protection (as much as France had pushed for her to wed one of their princes, they're unlikely to have risked alienating HVIII by keeping her under theirs [tbf, they did harbor Reginald Pole, but that was years later in a much-changed religious and political landscape/circumstances], as for Scotland, James V had outright refused Chapuys' proposal on the grounds it would alienate HVIII, his close neighbour, and besides, had already acknowledged AB as Queen and Elizabeth as Princess, along with his mother).
I am curious what you think may have happened to Mary had Anne given birth to a son that was acknowledged by everyone as Prince of Wales. Would she have been restored to the Succession or not?
No to the 2nd, and what's been argued in this genre goes even further and more specifically, that had AB had a son in 1533, Mary would not have been disinherited or had her title reduced at all, because there would have been 'no need'. However, the prevalence of this theory underlines a fundamental misunderstanding of English precedent when it came to inheritance and HVIII's own beliefs, which wouldn't have changed but rather been vindicated, had his prince been born in 1533:
"[...] to appreciate Henry’s viewpoint it is first necessary to clarify the nature of his quest. This was certainly not simply to wed Anne Boleyn. Most scholars have concurred with the emphasis given by Elton and Scarisbrick that, whatever the roots of Henry’s ‘Great Matter’, he became unquestionably ‘convinced in his conscience that his marriage to Catherine had been a great sin’ and that his lack of sons was a punishment for this transgression. This reasoning also means that we must take seriously Henry’s worries about a future renewal of civil war, which might best be averted by the birth of a healthy and clearly legitimate baby boy. In earlier marriage negotiations with France and the Empire he had insisted that Mary was heir presumptive; he now argued that she would be barred by illegitimacy. This contention puzzled continental contemporaries because elsewhere in western Europe those children born to couples who in good faith (like Katherine and Henry in 1509) believed themselves validly married were treated as legitimate. Nevertheless, Henry was right. After a period of some uncertainty, by the late fourteenth century England had opted out of the bona fides principle, just as it had famously done in the Statute of Merton from that of legitimation per subsequens matrimonium.
While it is true that the English royal succession was not rigidly constrained by the law of property, nevertheless, as Sir John Baker notes, ‘succession problems were usually debated in legal terms and in accordance with the common law canons of inheritance’. A successful challenge to his marriage would thus automatically bastardise Mary and leave Henry with no direct heir."
- Katherine of Aragon & The Veil, Journal of Ecclesiastical History, Vol 66. © Cambridge University Press
What Mary does seem to have been offered in late 1533, was the retaining of her own household, its complete staff, etc, in exchange her acknowledgement of Elizabeth as Princess, her stepmother as Queen, her parents' marriage is invalid, her own title as invalid by extension:
Throughout these years, the king had showed a genuine personal affection for Mary, even if his support for her as his successor was minimal at times. Initially, therefore, he hoped to persuade her to accept the Boleyn marriage despite its inevitable implication of her own disinheritance. Henry determined that the strongest incentive he could offer to secure her acquiescence was the continuation of her household on nearly the same scale it enjoyed prior to Elizabeth's birth. A checkeroll listing of all Mary's household officers and department heads as well as her senior staff carries the date of October 1533, a month after Elizabeth's birth. The list provides a snapshot of Mary's household on the eve before she was to experience considerable loss in status as a result of the imminent reduction of her household. Indeed, the list initially presents something of a puzzle. The king had already announced plans to reduce Mary's household shortly after Elizabeth's birth in September. Yet the list contains exalted names apparently indicating that in October 1533 that Mary's household was still of sufficient status to attract the service and residency of Margaret, Countess of Salisbury and Lady Margaret Douglas (Henry VIII's niece). Did the October list represent a description of Mary's household as it actually existed, or was it instead a fantasy household offered to Mary, via the checkeroll, as an inducement to accept her own disinheritance? There is not enough evidence for a definitive answer. Given the positive comment by the Milanese envoy around this time that Mary's household was appropriate to her (then) status as heir to the throne combined with the rarity of household lists taking the form of fantasy literature and the tradition of compiling such lists for accounting during October, this study proceeds on the assumption that the October list of 1533 was an accurate depiction of Mary's household. Jeri L. McIntosh. From Heads of Household to Heads of State: The Preaccession Households of Mary and Elizabeth Tudor, 1516–1558.
So while McIntosh admits there's 'not enough evidence for a definitive answer', I find her theory highly plausible, as it seems to fit the timeline of events (specifically, late 1533 to early 1534) and adheres to the scholarly understanding of HVIII's character, temperament, and personality of the early 1530s.
There's sense to this offer, as obviously the Duke of Richmond had his own household, but unlike her brother, Mary had been acknowledged as Princess her entire life. So, 'the arrogant presumption of that title' (HVIII's words) is very...things that make you go hmmm.
So it was at his discretion to legitimate her by statute (as Caesaropapism goes, an equivalent to the Pope declaring children of similar dissolved marriages legitimate in good faith, he could have done this), but I don't believe he ever would have. There's some fuzziness here, because this was apparently offered to COA via Campeggio by HVIII circa 1529 and refused (and she seems to have tried to grasp at this previous offer much later, like in 1533), so he must have been willing at some point (unless this was merely an attempted feint of deceit). What seems most plausible is that it was on offer genuinely, but as he further studied the religious and legal scholarship/precedent on the matter and argued for the legitimacy of his beliefs and views in the years to come, he must have come to believe Mary's illegitimacy would inevitably follow the dissolution of her parents' marital union.
It's hard to say perhaps Henry would have made Mary legitimate again but I can't see him doing that without putting Elizabeth and her new brother's legitimacy in danger. Maybe he would have married her off elsewhere?
At most, he might have invested her in some titles by dint of marriage negotiations, this making her more appealing to prospective royal/noble parents wishing to marry their sons (I've seen Duchess of York suggested, which I don't find likely from HVIII, former Duke of York, in particular...it was a title for second sons....I could see some new creation however, maybe Marchioness/Marquess of Exeter, as I believe Gertrude Courtenay lost that title after being attainted, and obviously her husband's was rather more permanently lost).
There was arguably equal danger to marrying her abroad to a prince (the potential to invade) and marrying her in England (proximity eased the possibility for any future coup). However, such qualms could be eased via marriage treaties, and in fact, we know of the marital negotiations for Mary that took place in the late 1530s and throughout the 1540s, that an immoveable caveat HVIII tended to add was that Mary and a future spouse would renounce any claim to the throne of England, in writing (as this was often the appeal for the other party, most, with the exception of the Duke of Bavaria, which was closed for other reasons, ended in stalemate). Tl; dr I'm not really sure her prospects for marriage would've been much better off in any counterfactual where her first stepmother both remained Queen, and had a prince (which is one of the greatest ironies of the, alternately named, Aragonese/ Marian / White Rose faction of 1536...they schemed for the reinstatement and better circumstances of their Princess, which never really eventuated in any significant way [at least, arguably not in much greater luxury or attendance at court than she might've enjoyed in her acceptance of Anne as Queen], as she remained in that joint household with Elizabeth for several years, etc.)
Claire thinks the 1553 Crisis probably would have been avoided had Anne's son inherited the throne. I tend to agree with her son on the throne even if that son were to die young the Crown would still pass to Elizabeth. The Lady Jane Grey Coup would have been avoided.
Well, that's to assume Mary wouldn't have fought for the throne. She never fought for this against her half-brother by another stepmother, but she did signficantly defy him, and she never left England as she planned to do during his reign...which leaves us with a rather open question of how she would have survived once he assumed complete power in his majority and dissolved his regency council. We can never really know counterfactuals, and this one feels way too nebulous to even make any attempt of sketch, tbh. How many supporters would any Boleyn-Tudor prince have had? Elizabeth had a significant party by the time Mary took the throne, and they certainly made enough moves in her favor to unsettle and frighten the regime. Certainly, I cannot envision a Boleyn-Tudor prince revising the succesion to make Jane Grey his heir and disinherting his own sister, especially as Elizabeth would, in this scenario, be considered legitimate more universally (within England, at least).

Lady Danbury’s Ball, 1814
“Did you read Lady Whistledown’s sheet from this morning?”
“Of course!”
“Is she really back?”
“If Lady Whistledown wrote it then she must be!”
“Lord Merton saw her traipsing around Piccadilly with her aunt this afternoon, He said she looks as lovely as ever, hard to believe her husband just died.”
“Widowed in her twenties, it really is so terribly sad.”
“She can always remarry, she’s certainly pretty enough to find a new husband.”
“She’ll have to, the new Earl is from her late husband’s first marriage. Apparently, he kicked her out the moment the funeral was over.”
“What a horrid man.”
“Can you really blame him, she’s five years younger than the new Earl. I don’t know what that father of his was thinking, marrying a girl of nineteen when he was in his fifties.”
“And she didn’t even give him children,” One of the voices added in a low whisper.
“You don’t think there’s something wrong with her, do you?” One of the other women added conspiratorially.
“It’s impossible to say, they disappeared up to Scotland right after the wedding. Hardly anyone’s seen her since,” Came a reply. “Maybe she refused to touch him.”
“Or maybe she’s barren.”
“A shame, they would have made such lovely children,” One added with a wistful sigh. “Her beauty and his wealth and position, they would have been the luckiest children in the world.”
“The real shame was to marry such a beautiful woman and then lock her away from society.”
There was no doubt in Anthony Bridgerton’s mind that their topic of conversation was the one and only, Lady Josephine Wescott.
Once upon a time, Anthony had been privy to all the details of Jo’s life.
He had been lucky enough to have received those details directly from the source, prior to their inevitable discussion in London’s social circles. Jo had always been one of London society’s favorite topics, even when she’d only been a debutante.
But that had been over ten years ago. And while Jo’s popularity had not seemed to dwindle much in the last decade, Anthony’s familiarity with her was a privilege that he had given up rights to back when she had been Miss Josephine Saville.
Now Anthony had to stoop to eavesdropping on the conversations of London’s matrons to hear her name.
Jo’s return to London had been the talk of the town for the entire week. Anthony hadn’t been able to turn a corner without hearing her name whispered.
She was a ghost from his past that had chosen the most inopportune moment to reappear. To haunt him.
He had declared his intentions with the beginning of the social season. This was the year that Anthony Bridgerton would marry.
And the homecoming of Josephine felt like a cruel practical joke. A painful reminder of what he could not have.
Anthony had been dwelling on his thoughts of Jo so heavily that he hadn’t noticed the uncharacteristic hush that had fallen over the group of women beside him.
And he did not see the reason for the sudden quiet until it stepped out right in front of him.
“Jo?” Anthony called out as the young woman passed by him, her gaze completely glossing over his very existence as if she hadn’t seen him at all.
Josephine’s gaze snapped to his face as the conversations around them fell completely silent, the entire room seemed to hold their collective breath as they watched the pair. The infamous and dramatic end to their attachment had kept the gossip mongers well fed for at least a season and a half. Everyone seemed eager to see what would happen next.
“Lord Bridgerton,” She replied, her voice as pleasant and distant as she could manage given the circumstances.
“How good it is to see you, I trust your mother and siblings are well?” She asked, following the script of polite conversation between two acquaintances perfectly. Jo had no difficulty performing her proper duties when in public, not anymore.
Despite her appearance being eerily unchanged, the woman standing in front of Anthony felt like a stranger. He had never known Jo to be indifferent to a single thing.  He’d been well aware of the mask she wore at public events, her way to ensure she fit in, playing the role everyone expected of her. But she’d never worn the mask when with him. She’d never had to hide her true feelings from him. He’d never wanted her to.
But he knew nothing of this version of Jo, couldn't even see where the mask ended and the real Jo began. He had no idea who the real Jo was anymore. And Anthony knew he only had himself to blame for that.
Tumblr media
Of course he would be here. He lived in London, after all. Josephine had known that they’d run into each other at some point. She’d done her best to prepare for it. But this soon? Jo suddenly wondered if she’d made a horrible mistake, coming back. Never leaving Scotland during her marriage had not been her choice, but she had appreciated the reprieve it gave her, the excuse to never see Anthony's face.
“What are you doing here?” He asked quietly, well aware of their current audience, but unable to help himself as the question fell from his lips.
She knew what he meant. What he was really asking. He had to know about the death of her husband so he wanted to know why she had decided to come back to London. Why she’d really come back.
But she would not give that up this easily.
“The new Earl has taken up the residence of Balcarres, so I have decided to try my hand at living in London again,” Jo replied with a smile.
Anthony caught the slight twitch of her right eye. There was the slip in the mask that Anthony had been desperate to find.
It wasn’t hard to understand that the situation between the new Earl and Jo was challenging at best. His treatment of Jo had made it through the grapevine with charming alacrity, all women properly aghast at his treatment of his stepmother and the dowager countess, who he’d kicked out despite his lack of a wife to take over the running of the household.
But Anthony also knew Jo would never admit her true feelings about the slight in public. Even though it seemed the whole of London was on her side, agreeing that it had been unusually cruel of her stepson.
“Right, of course, I am terribly sorry for your loss,” Anthony replies with a bow of his head, paying the proper respects.
“Thank you,” She replied with a dip of her own head. “I’m afraid I must be going, It was good to see you again.” She added in farewell as she turned to move through the ballroom.
Conversations recommenced around Anthony, and he could hear the hushed whispers of his name and Jo’s but he couldn’t bother to listen to what they were saying about them now. His eyes were glued to Jo’s retreating figure. And the undeniable sense that overcame him in that moment, that he had felt several times over the last decade, that he had made a horrible, horrible mistake.

The Aubrey Hall Estate, Kent, 1795
“Jo!” Anthony shouted as he stood on the ground beneath a massive oak tree, watching Jo try to pull herself up onto a higher branch.
“Anthony!” She shouted back at him in a mocking whine, sticking out her tongue at him as she continued to hoist herself up into the tree.
At the tender age of eleven, there were a great many things that Josephine Saville knew for certain.
A governess without the proper respect for the local flora and fauna would not last long in their household. (And her current governess did not appreciate the horned toad she had placed in her sheets the first day she’d arrived, and therefore could not be expected to last the summer).
Girls are smarter, faster, and braver than boys. (She could not fault Anthony on the first two, for those were not his fault, just the natural order of things, though his cowardice seemed to be a personal fault. Last summer both of their fathers (And Jo herself) had not been frightened by the stag they had come across during their walk through the estates, whilst Anthony had cowered behind his father.)
But most importantly, Jo knew with certainty that Anthony Bridgerton would always be her best friend.
She’d known Anthony her entire life. When her parents had married they’d moved to Kent, taking up residence in a house beside the Bridgerton’s estate.
Her mother, Isabella Findlay had known Violet Ledger since the pair were girls; they'd attended the same boarding school. When Violet married Edmund Bridgerton, the women had made a pact to raise their future children together, to encourage friendship between their children that would mirror what Isabella and Violet shared.
And so when Isabella had married Charles Saville, second son of an Earl a year later, and shortly after discovered she was pregnant, Violet, heavily pregnant with her own firstborn, had been quick to suggest the newlyweds move into the empty house nearby.
And the rest was history.
Tumblr media
I don’t think this is a good idea,” Anthony muttered as he watched Jo continue to climb.
“Don’t be a baby, Anthony,” Jo replied as she glanced down at him. “C’mon!”
“What if you fall? What if I fall?” Anthony replied as he pulled himself up into the tree.
Anthony had always been the more cautious of the pair. But they were perfectly suited in that way. Jo pushed Anthony out of his comfort zone while Anthony reeled Jo in from her more outlandish plans.
Most of the time.
Some of the time.
“We won't fall, now hurry up,” Jo replied without bothering to glance down at him.
Anthony made the mistake of looking down at his progress once he’d made it a few branches up the tree.
“This feels too high up,” He muttered with a gulp.
“If you’re going to complain the whole time you should just wait for me on the ground,” Jo replied with an impatient sigh.
“That wouldn’t be very gentlemanly of me,” Anthony replied, offended at Jo’s suggestion.
Edmund Bridgerton had given his eldest sons a lecture at the beginning of the summer about gentlemanly behavior and manners. Now that the children were getting older it needed to be impressed on Anthony and Benedict that while Jo was their friend, they could not expect her to always be up for the same adventures and that they ought to assist her when necessary.
Edmund Bridgerton had not realized that Jo was usually the one pushing the trio into their more dangerous adventures.
“Then be quiet!” She hissed.
“You’re being very bossy today,” He muttered in annoyance as he struggled to catch up to her.
“Someone has to take charge,” She replied haughtily.
“Why exactly are we doing this?” Anthony groaned.
“I want to see the birds!” Jo reminded him as she gestured wildly up at the nest that was now only a few branches away.
“You’re not supposed to disturb wild animals, Jo, father said-” Anthony started.
“Fathers are boring, my father said I’m not allowed to climb trees, we don’t have to do everything they say,” Jo shot back.
Once they'd both climbed those last few branches and shimmied over to where the nest was cradled between two prongs of a branch and peered inside.
“Oh my goodness, there are babies!” Jo cooped in excitement as she looked at the little hatchlings.
“They look weird,” Anthony muttered as he peered into the nest from beside Jo.
“I think they’re cute,” She replied breathlessly as she stared at the baby birds in amazement, sticking her nose even deeper into the nest to get a closer look.
“We can’t touch them, the mummy will-” Anthony began to warn.
“SQUAWK!” Came the loud, sudden chirp of the mama bird as she suddenly landed in the nest, snapping her beak aggressively at the pair.
Jo and Anthony both shrieked and reeled back at the shock, Jo losing her balance at the surprise and falling backward.
Anthony tried his best to grab Jo around her middle as they both lost their balance, but the force of her fall continued to pull them both right off the branch as the pair began to tumble towards the ground.
The journey to the ground was not pleasant for either one of them, though the many branches and leaves they crashed into did help to break their fall.
Once they’d both landed on the ground, the air soundly knocked out of their lungs, there was a beat of silence before Anthony spoke.
“I told you we’d fall,” He pointed out.
“Shut up,” Jo hissed as she laid flat on her back, staring upwards as she tried to breathe air back into her lungs.
Jo didn’t tear her gaze from the sky until she heard Anthony start to laugh quietly.
“It’s not funny!” Jo hissed as she sat up abruptly, though the moment she made eye contact with Anthony she found herself beginning to giggle as well. Their laughter grew until the pair were both rolling around on the forest floor as they shrieked hysterically.

Bridgerton House, London, 1814
The beginning of the 1814 social season brought a flurry of activity to the Bridgerton Household. With Eloise’s debut, Daphne and her little family returned to London so that Daph could help her sister through her coming out.
The entire family seemed to be gathered in the drawing room that morning. Each doing their own thing but happy for the chance to all be together.
“I heard Josephine Wescott was at Lady Danbury's Ball on Friday,” Daphne spoke up as she bounced baby Augie on her lap.
“She was? I didn’t see her, Anthony, did you know she was there?” Benedict replied, looking up from his sketching in surprise, his gaze flashing over at Anthony in shock.
Anthony didn’t have a chance to respond before his mother spoke up.
“She was,” Violet confirmed happily as she set her needlepoint down on her lap. “I haven’t seen her father in years, and I don’t know if I’ve seen Josephine since she married, it was wonderful to see her again.”
“Jo is back? Really?” Eloise asked curiously from across the room.
“Who is Jo?” Hyacinth piped up, never liking to be caught out unaware.
“Jo was Anthony’s best friend when we were children,” Benedict told her. “She married a Scottish Earl and moved up to Scotland before you were born, but he just died last year.”
“I had always thought Anthony and Jo would marry,” Violet mentioned offhand. “You two were always so attached to one another.”
Anthony turned abruptly at his mother’s comment.
“We-” He started to say before he stopped himself. He couldn’t explain himself to his mother, to his whole family. The impossible truth he’d been forced to realize. He hadn’t even been able to explain why he’d done it to Benedict, just gave some vague and half-hearted excuses until Ben had finally left him alone.
“Anthony could never have kept up with her,” Ben scoffed. “Me on the other hand? Maybe I should pay her a call. I happen to think I’d make a wonderful second husband.”
Anthony shot his brother a warning look. He knew that Benedict was just trying to pull the focus away from Anthony, and he was grateful for it, but he didn’t like the turn this conversation was taking in the slightest.
“Well I told her to call this morning,” Violet replied, oblivious to her two oldest children. “Anthony, dear, would you like to stay? The pair of you must have much to catch up on, did you write often while she was in Scotland?”
“No, we did not write at all,” Anthony replied sharper than necessary. “I must speak to the solicitor this morning, I’m afraid I can not stay.”
Violet's brow furrowed at her oldest son’s sudden outburst.
“But you haven’t seen each other in years, you were so close-”
“I cannot keep him waiting, I have to go.”
And without another word to anyone, Anthony left the room.
As Anthony rushed to make his escape he ran directly into someone as he turned the corner into the hall.
“Anthony!” Jo shouted as he slammed into her.
Anthony grabbed onto her shoulders in an effort to steady her before he snatched his hands away from her abruptly as if she were on fire.
“I won’t be staying,” Anthony told her quickly, his eyes never looking at her, his gaze instead focused on the space next to her head. “Good day, Lady Wescott,” He added before he disappeared out the door as Jo stood in the foyer still in shock.
Tumblr media
“Lady Wescott,” A footman announced before Jo made her way into the Bridgerton’s drawing room.
At the announcement Violet leapt to her feet to greet her.
“Oh, Josephine, I’m so glad you came!” She exclaimed as she embraced the younger woman tightly.
“Of course, I could never refuse an invitation from my godmother,” Jo replied with a wry smile as she pressed a kiss to her cheek.
“Oh, Daphne, I didn't know you were in town!” She added as she spotted Daphne sitting in a chair across the room.
“It’s so good to see you, I’m so sorry about your husband,” Daphne remarked as she passed off Augie to Eloise as she stood to greet Jo, leaving Eloise holding baby Augie out at arm's length in complete discomfort.
“Thank you,” Jo replied with a nod as she embraced Daphne.
“It’s a shame, you just missed Anthony,” Benedict quipped as he came up to greet her as well.
“We actually ran into each other in the hall,” She told him.
“And you couldn't persuade him to stay?” Violet asked with a small frown.
“He seemed to be in quite a rush,” Jo replied with a small shrug. She didn’t feel the need to explain to Violet that she hadn’t been able to get a word out before Anthony had disappeared.
“And you must be Gregory and Hyacinth,” Jo said as she turned her focus to the children sitting at the table beside her. “Goodness, the last time I saw you, Gregory was still a baby, and Hyacinth was still in your mother’s tummy.”
“Hello,” Hyacinth greeted her as she came bounding over.
“Hyacinth, Gregory, Josephine is Mr. Saville’s daughter, do you remember him? He used to live next door,” Violet explained to the pair.
“Oh! Your father is very funny, it’s nice to meet you,” Hyacinth’s face brightened at the obvious remembrance of Jo’s father. Jo grinned, she could only imagine what sort of hijinks her father must have gotten up to with the younger Bridgertons.
“It’s nice to meet you too, my name is Josephine, but you can call me Jo,” She told them. Her heart panged with the hyperawareness of just how much she’d missed of all of their lives.
“Well, come, come, sit and have some tea, we have so much to catch up on,” Violet chided as she ushered Jo over to the settee.
“So what has been keeping you so busy that you never paid us a visit?” Benedict asked.
“Benedict!” Violet chided, though she did look over at Jo expectantly, admittedly curious to know the answer, though she would have phrased the question far more delicately.
“It’s alright,” Jo replied. “I’m afraid life in Scotland made me terribly domestic. Just a lot of reading and wandering the estate, we have-had a rather extraordinary forest of sorts, provided lots of good climbing trees.”
“Climbing? At your age?” Violet asks in disbelief.
“I’m nine-and-twenty, Violet,” Jo replies with a laugh. “You can’t have expected me to give up all of my habits when I married.”
“I suppose,” Violet replies skeptically. “And how is your father?”
“Father moved up to Edinburgh after mother died, as you know,” Jo continued. “I was staying with him after Henry passed, but he didn’t want to make the journey down just for the season, I should have told him you would all be here, I’m certain he would have made the journey.”
“Well, perhaps some time we’ll make the journey to visit him,” Violet replied.
“And will you be returning to Edinburgh after the season?” Eloise asked.
“You’ve been reading Lady Whistledown,” Jo replied with a knowing smile as she took a sip from her cup of tea.
“I-” Eloise fumbled.
“It’s quite alright, I’ll admit I was rather excited to see myself so prominently featured in the little paper,” Jo replies with a chuckle.
“Lady Whistledown is far from little, her word is as good as gold during the season,” Daphne tells Josephine with a warning look.
“To be entirely honest I don’t know where I’ll go next,” Jo tells them. “Everything just changed so quickly with Lord Wescott’s passing. I haven’t really had much time to think of the future.”
“Of course, the loss of a husband is…” Violet trailed off. Josephine reached over and squeezed Violet’s hand tightly.
“Well, it is unimaginable,” Violet finishes with a shake of her head as Josephine nods sympathetically.
“Well, we’ll have to have you for dinner next week, that way you can properly catch up with Anthony,” Violet adds, changing the subject to something lighter.
Josephine merely nodded as took another sip of her tea. She had missed them all so desperately, but a dinner with Anthony that neither one of them would be able to get out of? Jo wasn’t sure she’d be able to bear it.

Happy Friday, ol Buddy ol Pal! For Temperence & Templars AU, something with Laela and #6 Green eyes with tears, from the Evocative Images prompts?
HI DEMA have some Laela being schemesy toward Cullen in my next chapter of Temperance and Templars. This takes place in the middle of a big ass party on the Trevelyan estate and Cullen is trying unsuccessfully to track down Thalia, who is supposed to meet a suitor tonight. Lady Arabella is a previously established friend of Laela's.
For @dadrunkwriting
WC: 1070
CW: Brief oblique reference to sexual assault
---
Cullen paced the corridor, his anxiety mounting. He was not made for these schemes and machinations. It just made him all the more eager to remove Thalia from this den of beasts entirely. She’d be safer in a Circle, surrounded by people who cared about her, and then he wouldn’t have to worry about Lord Whoever from the Madfort or whether a three-fingered knight wanted to blackmail her.
He was wasting time. He had to find her before anyone else did. Cullen started down the hall, away from the muffled sounds of the revels, toward the main library. He’d check there first, and if Thalia was not there, he at least had the advantage of knowing where her personal library was—
He was halted by a hand on his arm. Startled, Cullen began to wrench it away, only to look up and into the haunting violet eyes of Lady Arabella Merton. Sable ringlets strayed from a veil artfully arranged on the top of her head, and her pale cheeks glowed rosy in the light from the wall-mounted sconce. She really was quite beautiful. Don’t forget, she supposedly poisoned her husband.
“Ser Cullen,” Lady Arabella said, a hint of distress in your tone. “Thank the Maker you’re here. Lady Laela begs your assistance.”
Wrong sister, he wanted to tell her. “What’s the matter?” he asked, forcing aside his uncharitable thoughts. With a guest list this expansive, any number of misfortunes could have happened.
“I would rather let Laela herself tell it,” Arabella said demurely, averting her eyes. No one’s eyes were that purple, Cullen found himself thinking. Had she access to magic herself, to cast a glamour? It would be the least surprising secret of the night, if so.
Cullen stifled a sigh. “All right.” Arabella turned, skirts swirling about her ankles, and tugged him down the corridor with one delicate hand clutching his sleeve.
“Have you seen Lady Thalia?” he asked, trying to keep exasperation from his voice.
“I spied her in the foyer earlier,” Arabella admitted. “She was greeting someone at the front door, I believe.”
Cullen’s heart leapt into his throat. “Was it Lord Lewis? Of the Madfort?”
“I couldn’t say, Ser Cullen.”
Arabella grinned apologetically, pushing open the door to the terrace. The cool, damp night air hit him in the face. It was difficult to believe the height of the day had been so hot. A steady rain still fell, pattering relentlessly against the stones of the terrace, though the worst of the storm seemed to have passed.
Arabella gestured him forward. Under the dripping vine-covered awning sat Laela, her hairnet askew, blond hair a sheet across her face. She looked wilted and damp, her cream-and-blue dress pooling out beneath her as she sat on a low wall. She looked up. He was taken aback by the tears shining in her green eyes.
“Ser Cullen.” She reached out one hand to him. Her voice had lost its normal saccharine barbs. “You didn’t need to come.”
“Lady Arabella insisted.” Cullen stepped forward, carefully, but did not take her hand. The scar above his lip itched. “Are you all right?”
Laela’s shoulders slumped. She drew the back of her palm across her eyes. “I seem to have twisted my ankle while dancing.”
“Out here? In the rain?” Cullen was aware of how callous he sounded in his skepticism.
Laela snorted. “Where else? That’s where Bann Reginald likes to conduct his dances, if you catch my meaning.”
Cullen shifted his weight uncomfortably. He crossed his arms across his chest. He didn’t want to be taken for a fool again, but ignoring the implication of her words would make him worse than dishonorable. Laela herself had told him of her fondness for nooks and crannies. “Did he try anything untoward, this— Bann Reginald?” He of the third wife nearly Thalia’s age.
Cullen wished abruptly for the entire estate to be set ablaze, the fire consuming every grotesque noble therein.
Laela reached out her arm again. “If you would just escort a lady inside, discreetly?” Her silence on the matter seemed confirmation enough.
Cullen shut his eyes for a moment. An image of Thalia assaulted him, alone with Lord Lewis, his tall shadow from the fire cast over her. (Why did this shadow look so much like Uldred? He did not have time to wonder.)
He opened them again, but it was still Laela before him, not Thalia. Swallowing hard, he stepped closer and took her hand, helping her up. “Here, lean on me. Do not put weight on the bad ankle.”
Laela slid in close, her hip pressing against his side through the fabric of her gown. She threw an arm across his shoulder. She was taller than her sister, and doing so nearly brought them eye to eye. Cullen tore his gaze away, turning so that he could ask Lady Arabella to hold the door for them, but she had mysteriously vanished.
“I find that scar rather becomes you, Ser Cullen,” Laela purred.
Cullen felt her finger on his lip. He tensed and pulled away from her. Someone with an injured ankle would totter and fall to the wet stones, but Laela regained her balance with grace. Cullen felt disgust rising from his gut.
“Was Bann Reginald ever even out here?” he demanded.
Laela let out a tragic sigh. “Andraste, no. He was too busy trying to sneak a hand up Lady Rosalind’s skirts.”
Cullen turned and stormed toward the door. His hand reach for the knob when he heard Laela’s voice pierce the dark from behind him.
“She’ll betray you.”
Cullen froze.
“My sister, I mean. She’s playing sweetness and light with you now, but you shouldn’t fall for it. It’s not you she’s interested in, Ser Cullen. She’s a devious little thing.”
Laela glided past him and pulled the door open, holding it for him. “You’re not the first Templar she’s done this to, after all.” Her smile was bright and sharp.
Cullen’s mouth went dry.
“She’ll play you like a fiddle and leave you ruined. Is that how you’d like to end your career?” Laela chuckled. “If you thought about it, you’d see I’m the superior choice.”
“I need to be going,” Cullen said stiffly.
Laela shrugged. “Have it your way. I’m not holding you back, am I?”
Not physically, no. Cullen took a deep breath and stepped inside, leaving Laela behind on the damp terrace.

Happy Birthday Paul Merton (9th July 1957)
If we had met a year ago and you had asked me to imagine my perfect birthday, I would have been hard pressed for an answer. I suppose I could have quoted the poet Shelley's response to the same question posed to him by the Gentle Ladies Quarterly in 1817:
" To be surrounded by loved ones as I wake.
To be surprised by gifts both useful and imaginative.
To bathe in the glow of the nowness.
To meet male friends in the public house,
Before going up west and blowing forty quid on a prostitute."

• i do love mr bates with whole my heart, yet i also love thomas. Most of the fandom see it as: or you are a bates fan, or you are a thomas fan, and make it a whole discussion.
• Anna and bates deserved so much better, i dont even have to explain myself for this
• dowager lady grantham is a baddie
• mr molesley is a man written by woman
• clarkson and isobel should've been together, dont get me wrong, i do love their friendship, and i think they're better off as friends, but i was actually so so angry when she accepted dicky's proposal
• dicky merton is one of the most boring men on the show
• Robert is not the most evil person, he's just blinded by feelings

I've lived a thousand lives. I've stared down the barrels of guns that could put craters into the side of a fully-decked dreadnought, kicked a Morrite's ass for looking at me funny after a particularly bad night at a bar, died and was resurrected with a computer in my head, and jumped out of a moving vehicle thirty thousand feet into a planet's atmosphere. But not a single thing I am doing, have done, or will ever do in my future could ever compare to the absolute dropkick to the face that manifested in the form of walking through my apartment door to find my boyfriend of four years standing in my living room, completely naked under my bathrobe, stifling an unpleasant, giggling girl behind his fucking back.

Only Daughters:
Naerys having to host Aerea, Helaena and Aelora together with Leonyra at Widow's Town, bc the girls threw a fit when Leonyra was going away to visit without them.
A talk between Leonyra and her aunti during their stay:
Naerys: So, you letting Aelora train behind Alicent's back?
Leonyra: She looks so happy doing it and she's really good with a sword to boot!
Naerys: Alicent is gonna go mental when she finds out.
Naerys: Continue doing it, actually I'll have my Master ar arms continue her training wnile they are here.
Naerys: Actually, Kella, can you take Aelora? Kella, twenty-something and now lady of the Stonecrows: Lady Naerys if you make me take a wardling like you did while I'm in the middle of this marriage despite with Lady Belmore and Merton I will mutiny. Naerys: I'll handle it for you. Kella, pulling out a spear: Great! When do we start? Aelora: She's so cool!

Ok i know i hate unnecessary spin offs and remakes and stuff
BUT
Downton Abbey's a different matter and I would love to see:
- a spinoff about a young Lady Violet marrying Patrick Crawley. Courtship and such, they're clearly in love, ends with Lady Violet eloping with Kuragin, being sent back home by Princess Kuragina, and then realizing that she was right to stay or something. We know he was a man of few words but they were happy. Make something with that!
- 19 yo George and Sybbie, 18 yo Marigold, reaching adulthood in 1939 when the world is on the verge of... well you know of what. Even more changes. Battle of Britain, kids sent to the countryside being in Downton Abbey, actual Mary x Henry relationships, Branson & Talbot motors becoming a reference in the motor worlds, Edith and Bertie happy, Cobert getting old together, etc.
- cobert meeting, marrying and falling in love (in that order) in the 1890's britain. Youngish Violet, Dickie Merton being a pal of Robert, even being asked to be Mary's Godfather etc.
