On The Ninth Day Of Fun I present... a new feature! I’ll be looking at each of the dance schools in turn, so for now enjoy the first one!
History
The Inoue School, and thus the Inoue Style, began with Inoue Sato (井上サト), who lived from 1767 - 1854. She was entrusted to the care of the Konoe family in Kyoto from an early age as a lady-in-waiting, and showed great promise in the traditional arts. Since the Konoe were of the nobility, Sato had access to the same education as those of the aristocracy, so she was taught only the best. Eventually she went on to become the dance instructor for the Konoe children. When she left their care in 1797, the Konoe family bestowed upon her the name Yachiyo (八千代) and gave her use of the well frame (bishimon) kamon to start her own school of dance.
From there she gained her first students of the style and in her old age eventually named a successor, Inoue Aya (井上アヤ) (1770 - 1868), who was granted the title of Yachiyo Inoue II. Not too much is known about Aya, except that she was supposedly the niece of Sato and recognized the talent of a young girl named Katayama Haruko (片山春子) from a very young age and raised her up to be her successor, which would end up being pivotal in the Inoue school’s history.
Haruko (1838 - 1938), who inherited the title of Yachiyo Inoue III, would be the one who would be called upon by the governor and mayor of Kyoto to choreograph a dance for the 1872 World Expo to showcase the talents of her students, who at this point happened to be the maiko and geiko of Gion. Her dances became the first Miyako Odori, whose success was so grand that she was granted any wish that the governor could provide. As we know by now, her wish was to unite eight of the finest neighborhoods in the Gion district into its own new kagai named Gion Kobu where only her style of dance would be taught and leave the rest to be called Gion Otsubu. Like Aya before her, Haruko also found a talented dancer from a very young age to eventually replace her, but this time, it was another special young girl: Aiko.
Inoue Aiko (井上愛子) (1905 - 2004) began dancing at the age of 3, when those who are of prominent artistic lines usually begin their training instead of age 6. Although not related by blood, she would marry Haruko’s grandson and be adopted into the family. While not a standout beauty, her dancing skills were peerless and it would be the young Aiko who would lead the school as Yachiyo Inoue IV beginning in 1947. It was during her tenure that the world saw much change, specifically, the hardships endured during and after World War II and the slow decline of the karyukai when the bubble economy burst in the 1990s. During her lifetime she was named a Living National Treasure and received various awards and honors from the government for her dance. Like Haruko, Aiko recognized the talent of her granddaughter, Michiko, and named her successor upon her retirement in 2000.
Inoue Michiko (井上三千子) (1956 - present) is the currently the fifth holder of the title Yachiyo Inoue. Like her grandmother before her, she began dancing at the age of 3 and showed great promise. Also like her grandmother before her, Michiko has also been named as a Living National Treasure, one of the youngest ever to boot. Michiko’s leadership through the corona virus pandemic has been nothing short of the definition of strength and endurance and hopefully she can continue to pull through as Gion Kobu rebuilds.
Now, unlike previous generations, the next Yachiyo Inoue has already been chosen so quickly after the last head’s passing. Michiko’s daughter, Inoue Yasuko (井上安寿子) has already been chosen by committee to eventually replace her mother upon her death. Like the previous heads before her, Yasuko has been groomed since the age of 3 to be a dancer, and her skills are quite impressive. She’s been noted to be a dancing prodigy, hence why her selection has already been made.
Style
The Inoue style of dance is derived from the Noh court dances, so its movements are usually slow and punctuated by quick, dramatic ones.
Natori
Those who become natori in the Inoue style are given a special fan signed by the current Yachiyo Inoue and is decorated with a camellia flower, a symbol of the school. Each year they receive a new fan with a new design at Kotohajime. Unlike other dance schools, those who are natori in the Inoue school cannot teach dance unless they are an accredited teacher.

From the broken heart of a young woman, the Kobayashi Clan clawed their way to power. She would never be immortalized by name but a legendary technique that bestowed upon them the ability to capture their prey with ease. Women who were consorts, maids, trusted ladies in waiting, they have worn each face && armed themselves to protect what they hold dear. Monsters, cursed && abhorred but the only who would bring equilibrium in a world that found itself in a constant sway of power. Their decade-long feud with those of the Zen’in clan declares, should any man with the shadows in their blood seek their ire; he would fall into madness. Some speculate that their blood is thick with that of Yokai residuals, but the truth has never been found. Miyako Odori is their famed technique, born of the wilting dreams that many hold knowing that to become a blade of the Kobayashi was to give with nothing in return. The technique runs on illusionary tactics, stealing the face of those around them, women who have mastered this skill are considered ‘invisible or no face’. In the current time, the Kobayashi Clan is a beacon of iron will holding their strong hold on Gion with their infamous okiya. Those who wish to penetrate their sanctum learn quickly; all that is beauty is rot, nothing is ever as it seems.
Of course, we couldn’t forget about the main event! I use a mixture of different anime FCs, this muse interchanges her face constantly, but I do have one main FC. You are not allowed to use me as a source for muses, icons, ect. Failure to oblige results in a softblock, furthermore, if all you do is constantly reblog aesthetics I will part ways as it shows no engagement whatsoever. The story I write is solely for artistic expression, various mentions of canons, npcs, ect are present. If you do not subscribe to canon x oc shipping, that's great! Though, it will be mentioned quite often that Sayuri harbors romantic affections for particular canon characters. This isn't to force ship or demand that this be written with her, it's merely to streamline a concrete story that moves from beginning, middle, to end. If you want to write these topics, all the better, if not and you're merely here to enjoy content, great! Please don't ever think the canon story that is placed before you is something you must adhere to, it's solely an interpretation belonging to Sayuri.
If you have an issue that needs to be addressed, please reach out to me. Furthermore, no drama, no gossiping, none whatsoever. I do not care for drama that can be resolved by parties privately. If you block me or sb me on this blog, please do so with the rest. I have zero interest in interacting with those who would prefer my males muses while having my female muse block, it just is a weird feeling altogether. Thank you!
I try to make my blog as engaging as possible, while it’s understandable we all have lives with little time to be here, please try to engage in some way. I do count OOC interactions, liking posts, ect as engagement. It’s disheartening to try and write with others only to see it head nowhere whatsoever. On the topic of shipping; I love shipping! There is no need to deny it, though again, I ask that it be a two way street in order for us to better communicate. Harada grinned, his gaze lingering on the two women. "Well, you've certainly succeeded. I'm sure heads will turn when they see you both. The festival just got a lot more interesting!"
He extended his arms, gesturing for them to proceed. "Shall we? Let's make our way to the festival and enjoy the night together. I'm honored to be in the company of such beautiful ladies."
Haruka and Chizuru exchanged glances, their smiles growing wider. They linked their arms with Harada's, forming a small trio as they stepped into the streets of Kyoto. The sound of music, laughter, and the aroma of street food filled the air, enveloping them in the festive ambiance.
They laughed, admired the colorful lanterns, and indulged in various festival delicacies. It was a night of forgetting their responsibilities and immerse themselves in the lively atmosphere of the Gion Festival.
At one point, Harada noticed Haruka wasn’t with them. He looked around the crowd when he spotted her. She was talking with a man with long blue hair in a ponytail, tan skin, and western clothing. She looked happy and even laughing.
Harada was conflicted on what to do. “Ah..I don’t want to ruin things..”
“Hm?” Chizuru looked up at Harada. “Ruin what?”
Harada looked at Chizuru. “Haruka’s talking with a man. Seems like their getting along. But Hijikata told me not to separate from you two…”
Meanwhile, Haruka was laughing at Shiranui. “Are you surprised I look like this for a festival!”
“Hey, Hey, Ice princess..You look unrecognizable! I mean..damn..” Shiranui smirked.
“Come on..It’s not that big of a change..” Haruka laughed.
Shiranui then leaned a bit closer. “Still..you’re pretty no matter what.”
Haruka blushed a little. “Jeez..”
Back to Harada and Chizuru who were watching from a distance curiously . “Maybe it’s an old friend?” Chizuru asked.
“No way..That’s definitely flirting.” Harada said quietly.
“Flirting?”
Harada nodded. And then he saw them hold hands. “Did Haru ever say she met someone here?”
Chizuru shook her head. “Not really.”
“Well, they look like they know each other..”
Chizuru gave a small smile. “You’re like a protective older brother right now.”
Harada scratched his head sheepishly. "I guess that's what I seem like, huh? Haru's been through a lot during Ikeda, and I just want to make sure she's safe and happy."
Chizuru nodded understandingly. "I know what you mean. But maybe we shouldn't interfere unless Shinomi-san gives us a reason to be concerned. She deserves to enjoy herself during the festival."
Harada sighed, torn between his protective instincts and respecting Haruka's privacy. "You're right, Chizuru. Haruka can handle herself, she is an Okuzume after all. If anything seems off, we'll be there for her. For now, let's continue enjoying the festival ourselves."
As the night drew to a close, Haruka eventually made her way back to Harada and Chizuru, a bright smile on her face. "Hey, sorry for disappearing on you guys. Hope you had a good time without me!"
Harada chuckled. "No need to apologize, Haru. We had a fantastic time, and it looks like you did too. Who's your friend?"
Haruka blushed slightly. "Oh, him? Just an old friend. We happened to cross paths here. Anyway, I'm glad you both enjoyed the festival."
Chizuru smiled warmly. "It was wonderful, Shinomi-san. We had a great time together."
Haruka linked her arms with her companions, the trio walking side by side as they made their way back to their quarters. The night may have brought unexpected encounters and moments of separation, but ultimately, their bond remained strong, solidified by the shared experiences and memories they had created together.
The next morning at breakfast, however, was lively.
“Ha!? What do you mean you went to the festival?” Nagakura said looking at Harada.
“Yeah! And you took both Chizuru and Ka-san!” Heisuke said after.
Haruka just sipped her tea letting the baka trio handle themselves. She’s also gotten used to the nickname Heisuke gave her. Chizuru though was a bit on the side of caution at their outburst.
“Oh?” Okita said taking interest. “You took both of them?”
“Why are you guys making a big deal out of it?” Haruka said still drinking her tea.
Hijikata sighed. “Just let them bicker. Neither of us feel like dealing with them right?” Hijikata looked at Haruka.
Haruka looked at the trio and stared at them for a bit. “...Yeah, let them handle it if they want to act like toddlers…” Haruka drank from her cup.
Okita fake gasped. “For once both mother hen’s don’t want to deal with us? How cruel!” He turned his head to Chizuru. “It’s horrible! Right, Chizuru-chan?”
“Huh!?” Chizuru was surprised at her being dragged into this situation.
Haruka sighed. “Don’t drag her into this..”
Okita pouted. “Kondou-san! Ka-san is being mean!”
“But seriously! Why did Harada, Ka-san and Chizuru the only ones to go!” Heisuke asked.
Sanan and Saito both sighed at the group. Yamazaki then spoke up being curious. “It is odd only Harada being there to watch them..”
“See!” Nagakura said. “Even Yamazaki finds it odd!”
17/07/2023 山鉾巡行 (a short field work diary ramble?)
going into gion matsuri as someone who read their fair share of books about kyōtōs heritage and tourism industry, and who has an above average knowledge of shintō (which still means i barely understand anything), i couldn't help but be fascinated by gion matsuri's yamaboko parade.
of course, the event is heavily commercialized. the parade itself is ripe with police, camera crews, and professional photographers. at the crossing from where we were watching, there was paid seating (in the shadow, essential for japanese summer) available. in the end, it is just a street corner in an ordinary japanese town - not the glamour of gion itself, with it's heavily curated street views and kimono-wearing flaneurs.
but i couldn't help to perceive a sense of connection to the past. first, because an elderly lady was talking to me and my friends, telling us about her youth growing up in gion. her birthday is on july 10th, so she always treated all the goings on during that time as an extension of herself. she left early due to the immense heat and low level of comfort for non-paying spectators. yet, she has been to gion matsuri every year.
second, we were at a crossing at which we could observe the turning of the yamaboko. those big carts, intangible world heritage, are assembled and disassembled each year. each has its name and connection to a chō (block). since they only drive on one axis, they are turned by 90 degrees in an elaborate orchestration of wetting the road and putting bamboo sticks on the ground. i have zero spatial imagination, so i won't try to wrap my head around how they actually move those 15 ton floats.
what i could wrap my head around: that this celebration has been carried out (in some form or another, let's not essentialize) for more than one thousand years. that people (i.e. the 祇園祭会? shintō priests? unesco auditors?) will time and time again decide to do the impractical thing, and pull 15 ton wagons around an enormous city in scorching july heat. and move them around corners with physics (?), an arm full of bamboo sticks, and sheer willpower.
Today I woke up with a raging headache and was feeling pretty tired from coughing all night, and my voice still hadnt come back all the way, so I stayed home. I would say poor chelsea (my roomate) but I'm pretty sure she slept through all of it, thankfully. It was definetly a long day for planned for everyone, I am sad that I missed it. My exciting day consisted of laying in bed for a while, going to 7-11 to get money from the atm, going to the pharmacy to get vitamins for chelsea and I, then back to 7-11 for food. I figured by the time I got back the cleaning ladies would be almost done with my room but when I walked up one of them was still in there, so I walked down to the cafe area to eat my food and hangout for a while. After another hour I walked back up to check the progress and my door was still open and the shower drain was taken apart. So I decided to do laundry. I finally found someone working on the bathroom in the room next to mine so I asked her if mine was done, but she said no and then ran over to finish it I believe, so I went back down stairs for a little. When I went back up it was done, and I think I probably should have told someone that I was planning on being here for the day but still wanted my room cleaned but I was scared because of the language barrier. I finally got to sit down and relax a little bit and take a nap. I was feeling better after my nap and could talk a little more. A big group of other student went to a pretty rooftop bar near where the excursions were for the day, and I was invited, but by this time it was dark out and I was nervous to make the trek alone and I figured it would take me too long to get there, so I didnt go. I definitely regretted this decision because it looked super cool and I definitely missed hangout with everyone, since it has been pretty hard to socialize after loosing my voice. I did end up going out with everyone later that night, which was a lot of fun. Me and Raj werent sure if we were going to go to universal the next day as we had not bought our tickets yet, but we said we would go if the other went.
Academic Reflection
Reading the poem in Shintokumaru about the goddess Kannon, I was a little bit confused when they referred to them as a he, as Kannon is generally referred to as a woman. I thought this was just a mis translation, but then I kept reading and it explained that it was translated correctly and described like this on purpose. The article also talks about sekkyo performances, and I found it interesting that the early versions did not have a script, the actors were given a general overview and a few phrases and then improvised the rest. I think this is cool because each perfomace would be different and you never know what you're going to get.
After reading Enlightenment Geisha, the story of the geisha seems to be a story of striving to triumph. Starting out with a bad name and reputation, women were branded with as an unsult. Accused of things that they protested were true, until finally the Meji era brought change. Women who were branded as geisha started to engage in "civilized activies", like attending school, reading, sewing uniforms for police, leading to social tranforms about educated women. First steps in a long battle for equality for women, something I am quite passionate about myself.
6月12日 - Kiyomizudera (Sannen-zaka & Ninen-zaka streets) | Gion Tour
Today was quite an introspective day that allowed me to see potentially the real-life application of growing issues within the Kyoto area. Despite that, I still had fun as I got to experience new places and events unique to the area we went to as a class.
•••
Kiyomizudera ⛩️👘
The temple we visited had unique wooden architecture and structure that has withstood centuries. It was jam-packed with tourists, school groups, and locals alike. Some dressed in elaborate yukatas. Kiyomizu’s busyness could probably be attributed to the summer season and increased tourism after the pandemic.
Because of the spike in tourism, especially in an area like Kyoto with a lack of an elaborate train system like Tokyo, many tourists results to using the bus, making it quite overcrowded and hard for locals themselves to use such systems for their daily lives.
That being said, due to other factors resulting from this increased tourism, certain locals have a level of distress and distaste for the foreigners that visit. I experienced some rude harassment from some Japanese school students for being in Kyoto. While I am fine and certainly isn’t the shared sentiment of all locals, it really put into perspective the silent but growing issue that has recently accumulated.
Kyouzaka 🍡🚸
During our free time after the temple, two classmates and I found a small restaurant held in (what looked like) somebody’s house on Ninen-zaka Street. We had to remove our shoes as the place was full of tatami, and only one lady handled the service. The food was excellent, and it was very peaceful and quiet.
Starbucks ☕️⭐️
After lunch, we visited Starbucks in the same area to experience its unique traditional Japanese structure. Inside the Starbucks, it was bustling, but through patience and determination, we waited until seats were available. We got to sit in a tatami area and enjoyed our uniquely Japanese Starbucks, from tiramisu to Lemon cake frappuccino. After we finished, my other two classmates went off to shop a little more, but I took the time to sit and relax in the Starbucks until it was time to meet again for our last portion of the excursion.
Gion District 🪭🪕
In the Gion District, we got to see a performance by a Maiko along with an array of other traditional Japanese performative arts. While it did very much cater to foreigners and tourists, I think it was a great show to bring a tourist group who has no background or experience with Japanese culture to introduce them with a brief overview of some of the various arts.
•••
With that, I made my way back to the ryokan as tomorrow I, along with other students, plan to go to Universal Studios in Osaka. Overall in reflection, the area of Kyoto we visited was very much decked out with traditional aspects of Japanese culture and architecture throughout, especially in comparison to the modern metropolitan city of Tokyo. However, with a careful eye, you can notice the trickling effects that globalization is having, especially in places like Kyoto.

📚 Academic Reflection 📚
The first academic reading was a sekkyo-bushi called Shintokumaru that gives context about the Kiyomizu temple that we visited and the healing that the Bodhisattva displayed.
The second reading was about Geisha and their history, lifestyle, and significance of them. This text applied to our excursion during our visit to the Gion District and even seeing a Maiko perform.
