Headcanon - The Robot Master Wanderers

Since I know this won't get touched upon in detail within the story, so I might as well make a post/chapter about this.

NEW CHAPTER ON AO3!!

So - Protoman aka Blues, makes a group called the Robot Master Wanderers. He makes this out of other Robot Masters wanting to escape being Wily's robot, to explore the world as a human would, or explore beyond their programming. It didn't start out that way, of course.

But Blues did it all on his own. It all starts by running away to not have his personality taken from him just to get his core fixed. Yes, I think you noticed I got this from the Archie Comics. From there, Wily finds him and he becomes part of Wily's legion of robots and fights out of his newfound hatred for Dr Light.

Until he meets Rock in person. They fight and Blues realizes how much Rock cares for their creator. No matter if Rock has a driven purpose or not. Rock trying to convince Blues that Dr Light isn't a bad person and that he doesn't want to destroy any part of him, is the first instance of his code expansion-

Damn I should make a delta nano headcanon part 2- since it started from code expansion, plus Blues' independence, his coding helping with that.

Anyway- It's, of course, a visible change, albeit subtle, and Blue definitely notices it.

He then learns that Wily only temporarily fixed him, and he decided to run off again. Fighting alongside Rock. He then finds another Robot Master named Night Man, who was one of Cossack's Robot Masters and they grow a friendship in a short matter of time. I'll also make another post about Night Man and who he is, don't worry. But I'll have to get my best friend's permission first, cuz it is his character so- ye lmao

But yeah they wander together while helping Rock as he fights the Robot Masters tied to Wily and Wily himself within his Wily Machines.

Over the course of the two wandering, they find a few Robot Masters have escaped Wily's clutches to find out about their story and rumors circulating around them. Some were curious about their wanderings and if they could do the same, and Blues knows they can do what they please, as long as they don't hurt other humans, referring to the First Law of Robotics.

Which I may also touch upon. Man, I'm thinking of other headcanons I wanna post from this one alone, jesus.

I'll put in the list of wanderers they acquire throughout the story of Classic, and a little bit of X in the AU.

The reason why Axl and Lumine go in temporarily is when Axl tries to ask the Hunters for help in X7 Arc, he teams up with Keji, who also fights alongside Zero. I can't wait to write that arc too omg.

And why it's temporary for Lumine is after his redemption arc starts (yes, he gets one), he goes to Keji and Blues to see if he could join somewhere, so he won't be cooped up at Hunter Base all day. And Keji welcomes him to the club. And so he and Axl can find their respective creator, since she went missing after Lumine went under quarantine for his very dangerous variant of the Maverick Virus.

After they find her, they all live together as a family, a domestic life they all wish they had and are having their wish come true.

And because of the Wanderers starting in the Robot Master Era, they have code expanded on them as well, Blues being untouched most of the time, because his already does that on its own. X's does too, of course, but on a wayyyyy more advanced level compared to Blues.

Bass' code expands when he joins the Wanderers and gets a torn cape from Tengu Man to try and find Blues to join. Especially being closer to Rock.

Oh- and the Wanderers have a theme of wearing capes, cloaks, and scarfs, thanks to blues starting that with wearing his own scarf. But it's unintentional, he swears upon it. The others just started wearing their own after a while and he established the group officially.

And- there you have it. A brief history of how the Wanderers became an official group of Robot Masters who would expand their coding to experience things and to be able to break the obey code for the Three Laws of Robotics. As well as Blues internally promising to himself that he would redeem robots having independence like him and hot have a stigma of Robots being dangerous.

Which may hint that he may feel responsible for starting the obey code become a reality in the first place >w>

037: Satryn

A deliberate homage to Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar’s Robotron: 2084, Satryn initially feels almost too faithful to the original. It’s that close imitation that makes the differences starker, turning it into a companion that draws into focus how little aesthetic choices can drastically alter the feeling of what initially seem to be simple games.

Instead of modern analog movement and aiming, Satryn uses strictly digital 8 way movement and shooting. It goes against the assumptions of the modern twin stick shooter, but what it loses in finesse it gains in precision and readability. A similar philosophy drives the visuals. Backgrounds are stark black fields, with enemies coming in high contrast colors and silhouettes, making it simple to discern them at a glance. Each enemy has a distinct behavior, and a smart player will quickly learn which ones to prioritize.

Dotted among the hazards and enemies are Friends, small smiling creatures who you’re here to save from their banishment. Each friend saved gives a small boost to your score multiplier, which becomes important not only for scoring, but survival, since a random powerup will be generated at certain score intervals. These range in usefulness, from bursts that push enemies away, to adding directional coverage, fire speed, or giving you a shield that allows you to take an extra hit. 

Satryn demands a certain amount of adaptability, since powerups, hazard and enemy placements are randomized every run, keeping you from memorizing stages or developing repeat strategies. It generally works in the game’s favor, since the score based focus and lack of ending keeps it replayable. It’s only occasionally an issue where the random generation can cause wild swings in difficulty, with certain enemy combinations being overwhelming, or the random nature of shield bonuses essentially giving you an extra life through sheer luck. 

It’s also worth giving special attention to the soundscape. Satryn has no background music, instead the atmosphere is made entirely of the arpeggiated synth sound effects, and cold hum of this prison planet. There’s a surprisingly detailed use of directional audio, too, with the sounds of enemies and explosions tracking across stereo channels, adding to paranoia with a sense of danger approaching on all sides. 

This reaches a crescendo after you’ve lasted a few waves, where the diamond shaped Wardens that have previously watched from the game marquee enter the playing field. An audio countdown is initiated, before they burst from the sidelines and drop into the arena, approaching with their intimidating size and multiple layers of armor that need to be dismantled before attacking their core. It’s a terrifying reversal of expectations that suddenly projects another layer of uneasiness into future runs. What you previously believed to be a decorative element were actually sentient beings, observing you and deciding when they need to step in. 

Taken with the background fiction and enemy profiles gradually unlocked in the in-game manual, it provides an interesting subtext to the story, especially when compared to the fiction set up by the original Robotron. Robotron had you playing as a superhuman, the result of a genetic engineering error, saving members of the last surviving human families from an army of robots whose calculations have shown that humanity is its own greatest threat, with the only way to protect humanity being its destruction. The last human family has distinct roles of father, mother and child that mirror a stereotypical nuclear family.

By contrast Satryn’s protagonist, the Former, and the friends you save are considered Invalids, tossed onto the prison planet of Satryn to be disposed of by the creatures in its ecosystem. While Robotron draws on sci fi works like 1984, and fears of technology making human life obsolete, and disrupting the nuclear family, there’s an almost queer subtext to Satryn. Robotron’s menace is artificial, cold and calculating, while Satryn’s enemies are very much organic, splattering into streaks of color with each shot, reproducing and leaving traces of themselves in the arena’s aftermath. 

There’s malice in Satryn’s fiction, where extinction comes not from machine logic, but systematic exile and extermination. Satryn’s Wardens have sent you and your friends to this planet to watch you die, and they step in when they’ve decided it’s taking too long to happen. Intentionally or not, Robotron carries heteronormative assumptions about what the family looks like, with an inherent optimism that the same technological faults that bring upon our destruction can enable us to resist against it. Satryn’s Former is instead exiled by their genetic defects, using the powers granted by it to protect their friends. Even the name feels loaded, with the Former pointing to their status as an ex-human, someone who used to belong to society, or someone who underwent a great change. 

 Maybe that’s projection on my part, but there’s something about the fiction of Satryn that resonates with me. Robotron was painted in the colors of kitsch, the fiction little more than a backdrop for action unfolding. And still it came with assumptions about what the future looked like, and what was worth protecting. Decades later Satryn has provided a companion piece that, intentionally or not, reexamines those assumptions.

037; what I've been looking for

Andy walked towards the woods, just needing to take some time to clear her head before she made her decision about what to do with EJ.

She thought they were close, that they had something real but this week had shown the flaws in their relationships.

Her head was spinning with all the awful things going on that she barely heard someone call her name. She turned around, eyes scanning the area until she saw Miss Jenn.

"Miss Jenn? What are you doing here? I thought you'd left," she asked, walking over towards her teacher.

Miss Jenn smiled, "I have something I need to do," she said, holding her hand out, "Can you come with me?"

"Okay," Andy said hesitantly before taking her hand, allowing her to take her to the barn.

"Now don't freak out," Miss Jenn said before opening the doors.

Inside was EJ, standing by himself in the middle of the room. His hand were clasped in front of him and he radiated nervousness.

She had never seen him so worried. Not when he had Big games coming up or when his dad was around.

"Miss Jenn," she protested, turning to her teacher, her brows furrowed in confusion.

"I've never seen two young people care about each other as much as you two, now let's talk," She suggested.

Andy was silent for a second. She did not want to be having this argument in front of her teacher but she had no choice when Ej started talking.

"Andy, what I did was wrong and I've acknowledged that and I'm trying to make up for it," he said, taking a deep breath.

"But?" Andy questioned, she knew that there was something else he wanted to say.

EJ sighed, "But we need to be able to open up to each other, you can't go on the defense every time we have an issue," he explained.

Andy shook her head, she didn't know what to say, especially with Miss Jenn standing there.

"This is so weird, why did you invite our drama teacher to our argument?" She asked, raising an eyebrow as she folded her arms across her chest.

"See, and you're getting defensive again, answer the question," he said, running his hand through his hair in frustration.

Miss Jenn felt awkward s she realised she was intruding so she turned to the couple, clearing her throat.

"You two need some time alone, okay, I've got to go so please, try to make it work," Miss Jenn said, smiling at the two before walking away.

The room was silent and there was an awkward tension in the air. They stood there for a moment, avoiding eye contact and not knowing what to do.

"Andes, babe, I don't want you to put up this wall in your mind whenever I mess up. I know I do it a lot but I'm learning and I can't do it without you," he explained.

EJ took a step towards her and she took a step back, keeping the distance between them.

"There's just a lot going on and I'm super stressed at the moment and you're not making it any better," she said, her voice high pitched and annoyed.

EJ sighed, trying to think of the right thing to say, "I'm going to make it better. We're going to be able to spend the year together-" he started to say but she cut him off with a huff.

"But you're leaving! I thought we were going to go to college together next year," Andy said, exasperated at this point.

"I was going to convince my dad to let me go with you, I've never given up on us," he exclaimed, flailing his arms around like a crazy person

Andy scoffed, "Then you should have told me, we tell each other everything," she said loudly, her voice a little bit raised. 

"You didn't tell me your mum was ill," he stated matter of factly.

She felt like a bit of a hypocrite, realising she had done a similar thing. Andy wasn't going to give up yet, one thing about her was that she was just as stubborn as EJ.

"That's not relevant Caswell," she said, her face contorting to one of anger, her brows drawing together and her eyes squinting together.

"It is relevant, I'm your boyfriend and I don't want you to push me away again, not like what happened after your dad died," he said.

At those words she froze, realising that he was right. She'd been pulling away and stressing over every little thing. She had done the same thing after her dad had died and that's how she stopped being friends with EJ.

When he saw her silence and her frozen look, he began to panic that he'd said something wrong and the guilt started to seep in when he saw the tears in her eyes.

"I'm sorry Andy," he said, walking forward and placing his hand on her shoulder.

When she didn't pull away from his touch, he knew that they were getting somewhere.

"I haven't meant to pull away," she said, looking up at him and brushing the tears away, "But you need to realise that you can tell me anything, you're not a burden,"

He sighed, not knowing what to say, "I'm sorry I didnt tell you, I didn't know how to say it. I thought that I could work it out without you knowing," he explained, realising that was a pattern he followed in most relationships.

For the first time in a long time, they were managing to communicate effectively

"Then let us work together. I needed some space over the last few days to figure my head space out and you've just been starting arguments," she explained, not realising that she sounded a bit passive aggressive.

She often didn't mean to come off that way but the words fell like that. Andy wanted to fix things but EJs next move made it clear that she'd made it worse.

He scoffed, frustration building up again, "I'm starting fights? I just want to talk to you and you're ignoring me like you did when we were younger," he explained.

Andy had done the same thing when her dad had died. She had blamed it all on him and had stopped talking to him.

She shook her head, "I don't understand why you're being such a douche about it! You don't seem to care about me at all," She exclaimed,

"Of course I care about you Andy! I'm in love with you, I always have been. Everything I've done is for you," he said, his voice slightly raised.

She froze at the words, eyes wide as she looked up at him, her breathing heavy, "You love me?" She asked almost hesitantly.

She could barely hear, the sound of her heart pounding heavily in her ears drowning the world out.

She kept repeating it in her head. He loves her. He loves her. He loves her.

He smiled, walking forward to take her hands in his, "Obviously. You're the best thing in my life and I'm going to fight as hard as I can to be able to spend the next year with you and then the rest of my life,"

"EJ," she said softly, a smile on her face and a faint blush on her cheeks.

"There it is," he said, bringing his hand up to rest on her cheek, watching as she leant into the warmth of his touch.

"There what is?" She asked, a smile etched on her cheeks so wide that the corners of her eyes crinkled up.

"That smile," he said, brushing a piece of hair from her face, "You're so beautiful Ands. And you're talented and smart and you're going to be the best Anna that Disney plus has ever seen,"

"For the record EJ, I love you too," she said, leaning up to press her lips against his.

He pulled away for a second, "You really are perfect," He said with a chuckle before diving back in, his lips colliding with hers.

Days of tension and annoyance towards one another washed away and neither worried about their other obligations, focusing purely on one another.

He pulled her close to him, wanting to feel her and remember that she's real and she's his and she loves him. She chose him.

The door opened and they both turned to see Miss Jenn at the door, a smile on her face, "I guess you two managed to work it out," she said with a smirk.

"You could say that," EJ said, looking down at Andy with the most love and adoration in his eyes that Miss Jenn had ever seen.

"I'll leave you two alone then," she said with a chuckle, "Good luck, and don't forget what really matters. Each other,"

He brushed a piece of hair behind her ear, "You know, the cabins will be empty right now if you want to uh, talk more," he suggested.

Andy giggled. She never giggled, "Talk more or kiss more?" She asked teasingly, "Cause we still have some things to talk about, including our parents,"

He nodded. He understood that they needed to work stuff out still but right now, he was happy that they were just talking.

"Yeah, but we can sort that out, together," EJs face lit up as he took her hand in his, pressing a kiss to her knuckles, "And to answer your first question, little bit of both," he said and she nodded before the two ran out, smiles on their faces.

Andy and EJ spent the next hour in the cabins alone for the first time in days. Both had forgotten how wonderful each others company is and how much they loved being together.
