With the help of @bravo-four-seal-team, @@jayhalsteadfan-2417 and @rebelwrites, we made a list.

A list, posted on various walls throughout the Naval base, the plane and the cage room. About 1/3 of it is typed up, the rest is in hastily written pen. Made by Blackburn to try and corral Bravo. It's doing its best.

Skincare/ makeup culture ☕️

oooh. i’ll divide this post into two parts: makeup culture and skincare culture.

(1.) makeup culture.

i think everyone knows that I’ve never liked makeup, mostly because I had relatively bad cystic acne throughout high school, that reacted badly to all of the makeup that my sister used (but most particularly her l’oreal foundation). I think makeup culture is particularly harmful to young girls, like the makeup youtube channels that are run by the parents I suppose of 8 year olds, where the 8yo is the actual youtuber.

like don’t get me wrong, i know young girls like playing with makeup (I actually did when I was that age, funnily enough)….. but the fact that professional or just plain fucking ridiculously expensive makeup palettes are now being marketed to girls in bloody primary/grade/elementary school, is just fucking wrong. and yeah there’s the post on here about how some younger girls are finding themselves ugly when they don’t wear properly applied makeup or something like that. and that breaks my heart. why the fuck should a young girl be made to feel ugly if she can’t blend like josiemaycosmetics (I made that up btw idk any makeup channels besides Jeffree star, James Charles and that tatti woman tbh) and can’t afford the bullshit Too Faced $98 powered foundation, $65 Sunday Riley blush (I roughly remember the price of this particular blush bc my sister bought it for me for my 20th birthday so that I could according to her “look good for uni” but I never actually used it lmao… and it’s no longer sold here in australia) and Kylie Jenner’s overpriced lip kits and idk Smashbox “photo finish” primer priced between $AU23-$AU55????

like I had this bad enough in fucking HIGH SCHOOL with my sister telling me that I’d “never get a boyfriend” or “never get a date for the formal/junior prom” if I didn’t spend hundreds of $$$$ for a good face of makeup and didn’t spend hours and hours learning how to do my own makeup. or how last year for my uni grad, she made out that I’d ruin my own uni grad if we didn’t spend $250 on the makeup artist we got for me….. where I unfortunately found out that my skin reacts to MAC products 😭😨 bc the MUA used MAC concealer and foundation. my sister also expected me to remember the setting spray the woman used for my makeup, when I was there from like 4:30am till like 6:45am and i was barely fucking awake. the setting spray probably could’ve easily cost over $100. let’s be real here. like why am I expected to remember shit that early in the morning???

one of my least favourite things with makeup culture is that you’re not meant to fuck it up in any way, shape or form. like when my sister did my makeup for my two high school formals/proms (year 10 & year 12) she constantly told me not to scratch my face while she was doing it (but it made me itchy, hooray for L’Oréal being shit lmao)…. not to fuck it up while I ate at those events….. and she didn’t let me eat before my uni grad last year bc “you’d definitely fuck up your makeup. don’t you dare scratch your face at all today!” like for someone who has hypersensitive/highly reactive skin that she has to scratch when it’s itchy….. and also loves fucking stuffing her face with food….. expecting me to never touch/scratch my face and to practically starve myself to preserve the integrity of my makeup (that i ended up paying for some in the end anyway) for an event is fucking stupid and over-restrictive.

like i always hated the way that the kardashians ate on KUWTK bc it looked so fucking mechanical and whatever bc they had to obvs preserve their makeup while shooting and also look nice for the camera. like why the fuck am I expected to eat ~like that~ when I have a faceload of MU on???? FUCK OFF. I will scratch it off. I will smear the food all over my face (ok not really) and eat however I motherfucking want, thank you very fucking much. like for my uni grad last year I was up from 4am and my grad ended at like 12:30pm….. so I didn’t have food til about 12:35 when I left the hall. and the whole time while I was eating my sister kept reminding me to not fuck up my makeup that we’d spent $250 on. JUST LET ME FUCKING EAT WOMAN, I SWEAR TO FUCK. lmao.

the last thing I hate the most about makeup culture is that like….. I absolutely hate makeup like I said above….. but once I have it on I feel pretty and cry a bit bc I’ll just never learn to do it myself…. mostly bc I couldn’t be bothered…. bc I save hundreds, if not thousands of $$$$ from not buying all the bullshit essential items you need just for a ~basic no makeup, makeup look~, and bc my hands have never been steady enough to use some of the things, like false eyelashes and eyelash curlers or liquid eyeliner/normal eyeliner…..

but yeah. I just hate that it makes me feel pretty???? but I also feel good and more natural without it???? and I’ll never like my sister’s comment that: “you’re the prettier one out of the two of us…. but if only you hurried up and learnt to do your makeup, you’d be even prettier” or some dumb semi-condescending shit comment she’s said to me like that before. like why is the only way a woman can be pretty (other than some clothes that make her feel good) by smearing 100s/1000s of dollars worth of makeup on???? like why the fuck am I expected to spend all that money when a good bulk of men will never bother with the male makeup trend anyway???? like why am I expected to act differently when I basically just have grown up face-paint on lmao???? I’ve never felt natural in makeup, I’ve always felt awkward and like…. not sound like an cringey edgelord emo kid…. but i never felt ~real~ wearing makeup lmao. just yeah.

but yeah I also understand makeup is an art and I appreciate that. makeup culture is so fucked on all sides for women.

(2.) skincare culture:

now skincare culture is different for me. considering that, like I said before, I had relatively bad cystic acne…. and I’ve since also developed eczema during the winter months….. so I’ve had to develop a good skincare routine over the years to keep my skin under control. but again, there are parts that I don’t like about skincare culture…. like women are typically meant to spend, again, hundreds and if not thousands of dollars on super expensive skin creams (some of which I’ve tried) to fix their fine lines, their laugh lines, their crows feet, their blemishes, their birth marks and cellulite…… the list truly goes on and on….. and on top of that (well this hellsite which isn’t entirely accurate) I’m, or we as women, are expected to teach all of that to men in their 20s???? like fuck off. why and how the fuck didn’t they get the fucking memo to look after their own goddamned skin???? like my 20s are already tiring enough, and now I gotta pass on important skincare advice to men, who could easily fucking find it themselves online???? lord help their asses lmao.

but other than the men bit…. yeah skincare culture is just as bad as makeup culture. like when Cosmo mag was still running in australia, more than half of the shit the women at Cosmo were advertising as part of their skincare routines were literally $300 night treatment creams or moisturisers; $150 facial cleansers; or $500 skin peels, or $600 appointments at dermatologists and skin therapies like electrolysis that I’ll probs never be able to afford. like one of the luxury brands that I LOVE (💖) is Mario badescu bc the two pimple treatments that i sometimes I use from them (the drying lotion and the anti-acne serum) are the ONLY two acne treatments that have NEVER made my face turn red and my skin peel off (besides a really good neutrogena one that Neutrogena discontinued 😭). every other chemist bought pimple treatment cream makes my skin peel off/itchy/turn red. but sadly the two Mario badescu treatments are priced over $50 if bought together (ones now $31 (formerly $28, this one’s great bc it dries clear), the other is like $26, this one dries pink). so the chemist bought ones like the ones by Clearasil or OXY10 are my saviours at $11.99-$12.99, even though they dry out my skin to buggery and leave big white marks on my face bc they both dry white lmao. but I’ve gotta suffer that for the price of beauty lmao.

also there’s expensive face washes (or skin care program packs etc) from Paula’s choice that I love.... but again they were like $35 for a 400ml bottle and $25 for a fucking 150ml or 250ml bottle. now the one i like is $20 for 177ml, which is a rip off. some of the other luxury things that I’ve tried (via free samples) that don’t work, like Kate Somerville (priced at like $65 and over), Philosophy and god knows what else that i’ve bought from Mecca Cosmetica, which is the Aussie version of Sephora in the past. and yes, for acne treatments, i’ve used pro-activ before. it was ok… but i never used it in high school, after the awful time we had trying to cancel our subscription to it back in the day for my sister lol.

also can we talk about the ultrasonic face brush systems that are still raging strongly??? like they’re also super rip offs, especially with buying replacement heads for $35 a pop. like I’ve had a Clarisonic for years (that I’ve stopped using, admittedly)…. the model was roughly $250 when I got it for my like 19th birthday. now they’re even more expensive at like $315 for the latest “clarisonic mia fit cleansing system” which is linked on the $315. or now there’s the foreo that costs anywhere between $75 (the cheapest model) to fucking almost $400… ie $395. the replacement heads for the clarisonic and i suppose replacement like pads or something for the foreo are meant to be replaced every three months “for optimum cleansing” or whatever. like $35 every three months is a lot to maintain after a while. also using the clarisonic added like 10 extra minutes to my showers/general skincare routine bc you’re meant to use it for five mins or whatever and then spend another 5mins washing it out to make sure that it doesn’t collect mould and buildup too much soap residue. it was just a lot of effort to use, even if it did make me feel like i had a better and deeper face washing routine.

and yes, i know there’s Lush. both my sister and i (but more my sister) were obsessed with Lush back in high school, after one of our sydney cousins introduced it to us. but Lush’s skincare stuff for pimples just never worked for us. it made me breakout more, actually. but their old apple pie and choc-orange lip balms were the BOMB. it’s a pity that they no longer make them tbh. their jelly soaps were fun to use and smelt nice too. i can’t remember much else about lush tbh lmao.

for face masks, i’ve found that store/chemist bought formula 10.0.06 or whatever works the best for my skin. but the push, especially again in cosmo and other places, to buy more expensive face-masks and like designer FMs that you should really ask a professional to use first imo, is fucking harmful, especially when you’ve got ones that take off the whole top layer of skin from your face (like the famous and the overly popular charcoal face peel masks), or so i’ve read. like it’s yikes out there. please be safe with these masks, ya’ll. and the same goes for making your own organic face masks, considering that i’ve seen posts on here about using lemon juice which is bad for your skin??? idk anyway. i also hate how with the face masks i buy, there’s about 6 different “skin-illuminating”/“skin brightening”/”skin detoxing” etc masks, that all essentially do the same fucking thing. just keep it at one and fucking go; for gods fucking sake lmao.

but yeah, skincare culture does suck just as much as makeup culture, considering that is heavily focused on women’s self-esteem and wallets…. and barely ever focuses on men. like it’s a double-edged sword tbh.

also as side notes: why the actual fuck are makeup companies still giving their makeup shades or makeup lines sexual names???? like i just found a fucking blush shade by NARS, in my research for this post, called “Orgasm”???? like what the FUCK is wrong with ya’ll??? like y’all actually have the fucking AUDACITY to really make 8 year olds say that in their makeup tutorial videos as well??? “our best selling orgasm collection” sweet lord. that sounds bad. y’all need to sort your shit out, and so do the people who name nail polish shades..

the other worrying general beauty trends that i keep getting on my facebook newsfeed are the teeth whitening systems like hismile and at home laser treatment machines… and then also the charcoal toothpastes to whiten your teeth. oh and also the facial skin “vacuums”, that suck out dirt/oil and your blackheads/pimples etc from your pores. stay safe out there everyone, and do your bloody research. don’t believe the reviews and the hype.

also finally: take your skin type and skin condition/(s) into account if you want to use any of the things that I’ve mentioned that I use/have used on this post. or that I’ve just generally mentioned, like the Clarisonic and the foreo. because what works for me, might not work for you. I’m not a skincare expert or dermatologist. check with your doctor or a skincare professional or whatever before you start using some of these things, even if you might think that it’s stupid & pointless to do so.

The Amount of Work Writing Takes

Alright, I’ve been thinking about how much time I spend writing. Because I spend a crazy amount of time writing or looking stuff up for my fics. I am usually a slow typer so it might not seem it but I do.

I write all my stories on Quotev, it is pretty reliable and I can keep my WIPs there indefinitely. It isn’t perfect obviously (for instance, unlike AO3, you can’t put books in a series) but for actually working on WIPs etc it’s great for me. I signed up for my account on April 20th 2014. It has been (coincidentally) 2014 days since then as of October 25th 2019.

Well, seeing as I write a lot, what if I worked for 12 hours a day every day since then?

2014 x 12 = 24,168

For context, 24,168 hours is 1007 days exactly. Three years is 1095 days. Say I started working on my writing at midnight on January 1st 2000 and didn’t stop for a second until I’d completed the 1007 days. That means I would finally be able to stop once midnight struck on October 3rd 2002.

But that is a gross overestimation. I haven’t worked for 12 hours for over 2000 consecutive days. I’ve had work shifts, school, exams to revise for, holidays, so on and so forth. There are also days where I just don’t write at all for a variety of reasons. So what if I only wrote for an hour a day?

2014 hours is two hours short of being a full 84 days. Even at 1h/day, I would still be spending approximately 2 months 3 weeks worth of writing. That’s still a lot.

So how about we find a middle ground. Let’s say... 6 hours.

2014 x 6 = 12,084

That is 503 days and 12 hours. Using the ‘NYD 2000 to DD/MM/YYYY’ analogy, that would mean I stopped writing at noon on May 17th 2001.

5 hours = 10,070 (419d 14h or 2pm February 22nd 2001)

7 hours = 14,098 (587d 10h or 10am August 9th 2001)

Look, I could go on but my point still stands. I’ve been writing for over 5 years now. At first it was One Direction (yeah, yeah, I know. I was 14/15 and it was the early to mid 2010s. Sue me), then I got into Supernatural in 2016 and wrote some stuff for that. Now, as of roughly summer last year, I’ve been writing Jacksepticeye-related fics.

I honestly started looking into the numbers out of curiosity. It goes without saying that I’ll never know the true value. But look at the numbers above. Over 10,000 hours??? Over a year’s worth of time spent at my keyboard typing and researching??? Like, holy shit, that is absolutely insane!

And that’s just me, messing around with ideas and wanting to share them with other members of my fandom/community since I was 14. Other writers have been doing this for longer or have better work ethics so their numbers will be even higher.

I didn’t intend for this to become a ‘show fan creators more love’ type of post and I don’t really want it to be because they kinda feel like they’re pressuring you and almost shaming you for not interacting more.

I understand, life can be busy or you have things that take priority. I’m as much a consumer as I am a creator. At the start of this year, there was a whole bunch of ‘reblog more’ discourse. I saw it and thought ‘Okay, yeah, they’re right actually. I’m going to use 2019 to improve on the amount of stuff I reblog’. Only... I seem to have taken it too far. I reblogged over 70 Schneep art week posts this summer and I had over 100 JJ art week posts in my likes before I whittled them down into the slightly more manageable ~75 posts that are sitting in my drafts.

I put way too much pressure on myself to reblog and leave nice tags while I do so. I’ve felt more pressure to do so after someone mentioned it in an appreciation shoutout. Leaving all those tags takes time. There is literally not enough hours in a day/week/month to reblog all the stuff I want and also write more of my own content. It’s stupid how much guilt I build up because of it. It is nowhere near healthy.

Yet even now, my brain is yelling at me because every second I spend on this post is a second I’m wasting due to it not being dedicated to writing the three large fics and two smaller fics I want to have finished by Halloween. You know, that holiday that is SIX DAYS AWAY. I nearly had a panic attack yesterday because someone I follow posted an excited reminder that JJ’s birthday was a week away. I spent the past couple days relaxing while my head screeched that I should stop and work on the fics.

And if I’m going to waste time not writing, I’d better spend that time writing the tags for the 75 odd JJ posts in my drafts.

In short, trying to do 1001 things is not healthy. Nor is telling yourself you should not be taking a breather from all the optional things you want to do. Those three larger fics can wait. I’ll be disappointed to not being able to finally finish them, sure, but they’re too much for me to handle at the moment. Those smaller fics are way more manageable in terms of completing them by next Thursday. Especially seeing as they’re been half done for months anyway.

So all I’m going to say is this:

If you’re doing all you can to show creators your love for their works, then great, fantastic, thank you so much. You are appreciated beyond belief by that creator. Keep up the good work (to a sensible degree).

If not, that’s okay. Maybe go into your likes if you have the time over the weekend and reblog a post or two of fan art/fanfic. It’s been said countless times before but your reblog could lead to that post getting a much larger chance of being spread by multiple people. You don’t need to go on binges or be a frequent face in the notes to be appreciated by creators.

TL;DR Creators spend countless hours working their butts off to make their art, fics, edits, etc. Please do what you can as a consumer to show your appreciation for creators and their works but don’t pressure yourself to go over your limit. As much as we like reblogs, comments and the like, we don’t want it to be at expense of your wellbeing. We’ll try to do the same.

As I mentioned in my last post, my crazy work schedule got in the way of my blogging schedule and instead of catching up like a regular person, I decided to come out of left field with a post about my trip to New York. Hahaha! Well, since I screwed around and missed my regularly scheduled haul last month, I decided to combine my August and September posts. So, without further ado, here is everything I thought I needed in the past two months!

If you know me, you know I love a good adventure! So, what’s a better combination of excitement and retail therapy than thrift shopping? I don’t always have time to dig around to find the hidden gems, so I don’t nearly go as much as I would like. However feel like every time I go, I stumble upon the most incredible pieces; these Dior sunnies and Saint Laurent backpack are 100% a testament of that! I found the sunglasses for 90% off the original Technologic’s price tag - a freaking dream come true! This Saint Laurent backpack wasn’t on as big of a discount as the sunglasses, but I’d say that 75% off the original tag is still a win. This backpack was actually a piece I found in San Francisco when I was there for Memorial Day. To my surprise, it was still there months after so I took it as a sign that it was meant to be in my life.

As if there’s anyone left in my life that doesn’t know about my Saint Laurent OBSESSION, I splurged on my beloved when I found out about the Rive Droite branch of the brand. The thing that initially caught my eye about the collection was the Zoe Kravitz tee shirt. But, when I dug a little deeper, I couldn’t decide if I wanted the Kate Moss or the Zoe Kravitz polaroid, so I went a little (lot) crazy and bought both! The little monogram piece is actually a bookmark that I figured could make a cute addition to my blazers. My final Saint Laurent purchase came from the outlet in New York. I’d had my sights set on Chelsea boots for a minute now, but I’ve never been a fan of the elastic sections. The ribbed leather design on these really caught my eye, and at over 50% off, they were a MUST HAVE!

If you know me in real life, then you’ll know that this hat is extremely on-brand for me! I’d actually wanted the sweater when it first came out, but I decided against it based on the price alone. I couldn’t justify paying 4-figures for a black hoodie with embroidery and not much of a design (I know you’re probably thinking “WTF? What about all those screen printed tees??” And, you’d be right. I don’t know either). However, at an outlet price point, I knew I would regret not buying this adorable little hat.

I bought these Toga Archive double western buckle sandals for any day clubbing opportunities that might’ve arose during my Vegas trip. However, with that trip being a bust, these gorgeous sandals made the quick transition to becoming my everyday sandals. If you know my weekend uniform, you know that I love a good pair of slides, and I’ve been obsessed with western buckles recently. My next purchase is definitely going to be a pair of western buckle boots. If anyone knows of any good ones, please let me know!

After my trip to New York, I told myself I would take a breather, but one of my favorite fashion bloggers released a capsule collection with Jaded London and you know I had to show my support! Hahaha. The collection was breathtaking and the aesthetics were right up my alley. I wanted both iterations of the shirt, but I figured I didn’t need both. However, I did buy both of the barrel bags since I imagined so many different ways to wear them. I also bought a few things that weren’t part of the collection: the socks and the necklace. The alien socks are super cute, but I wouldn’t have bought them if I didn’t need to make the minimum amount for free shipping. The neck-hugging barbed wire necklace on the other hand, DELICIOUS!

If you just started following me recently, you might only know me for my stupid ass spending habits; however, my blog started out with equal parts fashion and art. Not only did I showcase my own art and processes, when I was in school, I would write about the various gallery features around San Diego. So, if you’ve been here since the start, you’ll know that these canvases didn’t come out of the blue. The muted piece was actually a find from Ross! I honestly haven’t even hung it up and I have no idea what I want to do with a piece of this size, but I knew I needed her calming vibes. The hand-painted aspect of this piece had me sold; although, I don’t think Ross was selling custom handmade pieces for $40. The next two pieces are from the extremely talented Shane Bowden, an Australian artist, whose galleries I frequented in San Diego. The Birkin and the Dom will go with my Louboutin piece that I got a few years ago. The Chanel is actually a gift for my cousin, but it’s gorgeous so I thought it should be included. I’m a HUGE fan of pop art, and if you don’t think these paintings don’t have my name written all of over them, then you don’t know me at all. Hahaha!

The last item from this haul is this highly sought-after reusable Starbucks cup. I literally tore through San Jose in search of this bad boy! This cup was only released to licensed stores - meaning inside of Targets, grocery stores, bookstores, etc. I honestly still can’t believe I found the last one in San Jose all because one of the workers left it in the backroom and never put it on the shelf.

Anyway, sorry about how long this post turned out to be. I didn’t realize how hard I was wylin’ out over the past two months. I might actually need to get checked before I wreck myself. Hahaha.

One time I sent Enna three separate rambly stupid asks about her OCs and I was so tired that the next morning I remembered I sent them but I couldn’t remember anything I said. I’m done with waiting around and getting hurt over and over just to “be a good friend.” That’s not being a friend, that’s being a doormat/punching bag.

SEPTEMBER Jakob Layman Dave's Hot Chicken - Fairfax $$$$ 465 N. Fairfax Ave.

After months of anticipation - and one false start this past weekend - Dave’s Hot Chicken has finally opened on Fairfax. Their newest outpost features that titular hot bird (do you dare try the dreaded Reaper-level spice?), a large outdoor patio area, and a line that’s presumably forming right now. Hey, you’re already going to be waiting at the Supreme store, you might as well eat, too. Dave’s Fairfax is open Monday-Thursday from 11am-11pm, and Friday-Sunday from 11am-midnight.

De Buena Planta $$$$ 1118 Abbot Kinney Blvd.

This new, plant-based Mexican pop-up from the founder of The Butcher’s Daughter has turned an Abbot Kinney parking lot into an outdoor oasis, complete with desert gravel, tropical trees, a fire pit, and a 15-foot bar. The entirely gluten-free menu includes birria tacos made from stewed daikon radishes, vegan ceviches, plenty of creative cocktails, and seasonal agua frescas and jugos. De Buena Planta is open Friday-Sunday, from 4-9pm.

Mazza Modern Kitchen $$$$ 12050 Ventura Blvd.

Mazza is a new Mediterranean and Middle Eastern spot in Studio City with a large menu that includes shirazi salads, a wide variety of spreads served with naan (Moroccan-style matbucha, hummus, baba ghanoush, etc.), flatbreads, soups like Uzbek lagman with lamb, kebabs, and pitas. Mazza Modern Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday-Sunday, from 11:30am-8:30 pm.

A high-end sando pop-up (yep…) in Santa Ana, Sandoitchi’s claim to fame is an A5 wagyu sando covered in black truffle and gold leaf that sold for $75 during a pop-up in Dallas last month. How much will it cost in The OC? We actually don’t know - Sandoitchi posts their menu on Instagram on Sunday, with orders beginning through their website at precisely 6pm. And, yes, of course they sell out fast, so stay on top of their socials to make sure you don’t get shut out. Sandoitchi’s OC outpost will be serving every Sunday until September 20th.

Wood & Salt Tavern $$$$ 4262 Atlantic Ave.

The latest spot from the team behind Wirsthaus and Rasselbock, Long Beach’s Wood & Salt Tavern differs from its restaurant siblings in that the menu doesn’t lean German - instead, it’s filled with handmade pastas and wood-fired entrees like whole fish and bone-in chops. But it does both those spots proud with a lengthy list of beers (and wine, too). Wood & Salt Tavern is currently open Sunday-Thursday, from 3-9pm, and Friday-Saturday from 3-10pm.

Josh Telles Fingers Crossed $$$$ 6417 Selma Ave

Just as his famous spot Felix reopens for al fresco dining, chef Evan Funke debuts his latest extremely Italian endeavor, Fingers Crossed. From spicy diavola pizzas to oxtail meatballs and rigatoni alla carbonara, much like The Lizzie McGuire Movie, this new restaurant in Hollywood is a love letter to the city of Rome.

Ela Ela Ela Ela $$$$ 755 N La Cienega Blvd

In addition to a truly remarkable typeface, Ela Ela is serving a variety of Mediterranean dishes like tahini-roasted vegetables, baklava, and pitas filled with your choice of falafel, roasted eggplant, chicken, or beef kabob. Reservations can be made through their website, and you can try dissecting their font kit with this iPhone app.

Heritage Sandwich Shop $$$$ 2032 E 7th Street

It’s a big month for new sandwiches in LA, and the latest contender just opened in Long Beach. Heritage’s menu is filled with sandwiches featuring smoked brisket, slow-roasted pork belly, and fried halibut served on a brioche bun, as well as desserts like root beer floats and peanut butter ice cream sandwiches. Limited patio seating available.

The Douglas The Douglas $$$$ 1400 W Sunset Blvd

According to their website, The Douglas specializes in two things: Good beer and cheap friends. It’s owned and operated by two (presumably penny-pinching) best friends, and offers everything from double-patty burgers to hand-held chicken pot pies, as well as beers, ciders, and seltzers via their outdoor patio in Echo Park.

Sky's Gourmet Tacos Sky's Gourmet Tacos - Downtown LA $$$$ 358 West 38th St

The legendary taco spot has expanded to Downtown LA. Located next to Exposition Park, Sky’s Gourmet’s third outpost has the same menu of Southern/Mexican dishes they’re known for, such as crawfish tacos, burritos filled with Cajun shrimp, and ribs smothered in their signature sauce.

This Week’s Reopenings: The Buffalo Club in Santa Monica is back for outdoor dining. The iconic (and previously tourist-mobbed) LA classic, Pink’s Hot Dogs, has reopened after a five-month closure. The Sycamore Kitchen is now doing takeout and delivery (plus patio dining), and in a Game of Thrones-style twist, Jerry’s Famous Deli has returned to their Marina del Rey outpost, effectively kicking out residing American steakhouse, Stark’s.

AUGUST Liberation Coffee House Liberation Coffee House $$$$ 6725 Santa Monica Boulevard

Located in the main campus of the LGBT Center in Hollywood, Liberation Coffee House is a new coffee shop that’s giving back to the community. In addition to breakfast burritos, croissants, parfaits, and other snack items, the queer-friendly cafe is also staffed by graduates of the center’s culinary arts program and works with employees to prepare them for a future in hospitality and food service.

Foodsteez Monty's Good Burger - West Third St. $$$$ 8432 W. Third Street

The all-vegan burger spot has a new outpost in West Hollywood. Located on (you guessed it) West Third St., this is Monty’s third installment, joining the plant-based chain’s Echo Park and Koreatown locations. The menu hasn’t really changed, so expect the same lineup of vegan patties, tater tots, and extremely thicc milkshakes.

Mikaza $$$$ 542 South Broadway St

Mikaza is a new Nikkei-style sushi bar in Downtown LA that offers everything from ceviche to sushi rolls. For those needing a refresher (literally no judgment), Nikkei combines traditional Japanese recipes with ingredients native to Peru, like yellow peppers, tropical fish, and corn. Are we allowed to make another Hannah Montana “Best of Both Worlds” reference here? Because we’d sure like to.

The popular taco truck now has a brick-and-mortar restaurant in Downtown LA. This is now the taqueria’s third location, following successful outposts in Lincoln Heights and Eagle Rock, but expect the same menu of affordable tacos made with al pastor, carne asada, and tripas.

Paper Rice Paper Rice - Spring Rolls & Bowls $$$$ 20 W Union St

The new Pasadena spot specializes in build-your-own gỏi cuốn, or Vietnamese spring rolls. Proteins like charbroiled nem, or pork sausage, braised pork belly, lemongrass chicken, and soy garlic tofu can be mixed-and-matched with veggies such as lettuce and pickled daikon, and toppings like chopped peanuts and toasted sesame. From there, you have your choice of either wrapping it all up in a roll or throwing it in a bowl - which honestly, sounds like a Tuesday night in college. Paper Rice opens on Friday, August 28th.

The Cloverfield $$$$ 3300 Airport Ave

Not to be confused with the 2008 film (or its honestly-not-bad sequel), The Cloverfield is a new American restaurant located in the Santa Monica Airport - which, fun fact, used to be known as Clover Field. The menu is filled with thin-crust pizzas, crispy chicken sandwiches, and house-made pastas, in addition to one flight-related cocktail. It’s named “Aviation” and comes with Aviation gin, creme de violette, and fresh lemon. Wright on.

Also known as our stomach after drinking a tall glass of milk (What? We’re lactose-intolerant), Fire Belly is a fast casual Chinese operation from the team at Sichuan Impression. The latest in LA’s string of ghost kitchens, like the one at Broken Spanish and Kaon!, a Filipino-Mexican restaurant around Pico-Union, everything here is to-go only, like Sichuan dumplings, kung pao chicken, and mapo tofu.

LA’s latest luxury spot is Sushi Tama. Located in Beverly Hills, this high-end Japanese restaurant is offering everything from at-home hand roll kits to vegetable donburis, but the real deal here is their ten-piece omakase nigiri set, which only costs $45. We say “only” because you could buy two and it would still cost less than the parking ticket we received last week. Score! Sushi Tama is available for takeout and has limited outdoor seating.

Gamboge $ $ $ $ Cambodian in Lincoln Heights $$$$ 1822 N Broadway

Gamboge is a Cambodian-inspired deli, cafe, and marketplace founded by husband and wife duo, Hak Lonh and Jane Oh. Lonh, who was born in a refugee camp on the border of Thailand and Cambodia, shares the flavors of Cambodian cuisine through dishes like nerom sach moan, or Khmer chicken salad, pickled green papaya and carrot slaw, and grilled short rib rice plates. Available for takeout and delivery.

Yola Minibar Yola Minibar On Wheels $$$$

Apparently, anything is possible in 2020 - even ordering mezcal-filled Slushees from (what looks like) a former USPS truck. Called Yola Minibar, this roaming mezcal truck serves mezcal negronis, Old Fashioneds, popcorn, gelato, and alcoholic Slushees. They drive throughout Los Feliz, Hollywood, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and Highland Park - so keep your eyes peeled (or just, like, check their Instagram).

Tartine Silver Lake $$$$ 3921 Sunset Blvd

The Bay Area bakery’s empire expands yet again - this time, with the addition of an all-day cafe in Silver Lake. Located next to that giant, yurt-shaped Sweetgreen on Sunset Blvd., you can expect all of the pastries, cookies, and excellent loaves of bread that have made Tartine a household name - given that your household appreciates a well-made morning bun, that is. Available for takeout and delivery.

Mia's Kitchen Mia's Kitchen $$$$ 312 Rosecrans Avenue

Mia’s Kitchen is a new restaurant in Manhattan Beach that specializes in Carribean cooking. Inspired by her mother’s (Mia) recipes, Chef Lisa Salinas highlights the island flavors of Trinidad and Tobago through dishes like oxtail stew, dhalpuri roti (Trini flatbread filled with split peas, potatoes, and carrots), and blue crab curry with dumplings. This Week’s Reopenings: Both Olivetta and Harriet’s in West Hollywood reopened this week, with brand-new poolside patios and rooftops, respectively. Rob Stark Nueva $$$$ 822 Washington Blvd

As you probably gathered from the name, this Venice cantina is quite new. Located in the old Sunny Spot space on Washington Blvd., Nueva is a Mexican restaurant that serves modern dishes like shakshuka ranchos in a corn tortilla, hamachi and uni ceviche, and tempura sea bass topped with cilantro aioli. And given the legacy of their building’s former tenants, yes, they’re doing brunch. They’re only available for takeout and outdoor seating for now, but with their brightly colored patio, Nueva is already shaping up to be one of the best places in town to drink watermelon shrub margaritas (six feet apart, obvs).

Champion's Curry Champion's Curry - Little Tokyo $$$$ 136 Central Avenue

Alert the media (wait, isn’t that us?) Champion’s Curry arrives in Little Tokyo on 8/15. After a successful launch in Long Beach, the Japanese curry chain is opening their second U.S. location, and with a bigger space (and designated patio seating), there’s even more room to enjoy their signature Kanazawa-style curry - a thick, savory sauce that can be served on everything from chicken katsu and rice to a bowl of fries.

Anoush BBQ Anoush BBQ $$$$ 357 Arden Avenue

In perhaps the greatest crossover episode in history, this Glendale spot combines the distinct flavors of Korean BBQ with Mediterranean cuisine. Galbi and kimchi live on the same menu as lamb chops and basmati rice. Grills are filled with tiger prawns, lule kabobs, and filet mignon. And everything is available for patio dining. Which begs the question - why didn’t we think of this?

Theia Theia $$$$ 8048 W. 3rd. Street

From tzatziki to house-made pita to full-blown mezze plates, Theía is a new Greek spot on West Third in Beverly Grove that has everything you need to recreate the trip to Mykonos you had planned this summer, including an outdoor patio space. Theía opens August 15th.

Ichijiku Ichijiku $ $ $ $ Sushi in Highland Park $$$$ 5629, 1/2 N Figueroa St

Highland Park’s latest addition is Ichijiku, a neighborhood sushi bar that specializes in nigiri and hand rolls. Owned by the team behind Cafe Birdie and Ma’am Sir, the menu here is pretty compact - you’ll find all the standard cuts of toro, yellowtail, and blue crab, alongside slices of A5 wagyu beef and vegetarian rolls made with roasted red pepper and lotus root. Currently takeout only.

Striped bass crudo, sustainably sourced ingredients, and a dash of racial justice? Maybe you really can have it all. Meet Crudo e Nudo, a new coastal Italian raw bar in West Hollywood. Operating out of Employees Only’s patio space on weekends, the focus here is on seafood sourced from local fisherman, like Pacifico striped bass and line-caught ahi. Plus, 10% of all sales goes directly to Black Lives Matter. So maybe order that extra round of crudo?

Lascivious name aside, Lemme Smash is the latest entry into LA’s New Burger Universe. These smashed patties have everything you need when it comes to a burger - crispy-yet-juicy meat, thick buns, melted cheese, and a provocative name, but Lemme Smash also comes with a secret ingredient up their sleeve - cilantro on top. Takeout only.

Now that international travel is, how you say, off the menu, if you’re in the mood for a traditional Sunday roast, you’re going to look domestically. But luckily, not too far - because Market Tavern opens in Hollywood this week. Located in The Original Farmers Market, this casual British pub serves everything from fish and chips to shepherd’s pie. Oh, and of course, Sunday roasts, and lots of beer. Outdoor patio seating available.

Modern Times Modern Times Beer: Leisuretown $$$$ 549 S Anaheim Blvd

Another day, another hilariously named Modern Times brewery: Joining the ranks of The Dankness Dojo and The House of Perpetual Refreshment is Leisuretown. Located in downtown Anaheim, this 33,000 square-foot behemoth is equipped with a full-scale kitchen, beer garden, mini-mart, and even a pool - which, for the record, is currently not open for swimming (but might be soon?)

Westwood’s latest addition is Violet, a casual French bistro that also doubles as a culinary school. Everything here is charming and Très French, from the rustic, wooden interiors and a shaded patio out back, to the menu, filled quiche, steak frites, gougères (choux pastries with cheese), and pan-seared whitefish barigoule. The cocktail list follows suit, featuring, uh, French-ish drinks like the Monsieur Pimm and the Bloody Antoinette. Violet is open for lunch and dinner during the week, and does a weekend brunch from 9am-2pm.

Tree of Wishes $$$$ 7469 Melrose Ave

Forget Disneyland, if you really want your dreams to come true, head to Melrose Ave. Operating out of a cozy, West Hollywood-ish space, Tree of Wishes serves all kinds of Mediterranean fare, from meze like hummus and muhammara (a red pepper and walnut spread), to larger mains like branzino and casarecce with roasted eggplants and Kalamata olives. And if you’re like B.O.B. and could really use a wish right now, there’s a literal wishing tree out back. Just write down your hopes and dreams onto a ribbon, tie it to one of its branches, and hope that the forest gods will actually take away your adult acne.

LOVE Organic $$$$ 8205 Santa Monica Blvd

We found love in a hopeless place - which, in this context, means organic, vegan food in West Hollywood. This plant-based restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd. serves a variety of pan-Asian foods, such as Thai “wings” cooked in lemongrass, pad thai, chow mein noodles, and green curry dumplings, as well as an entire menu of fish-less sushi rolls, with ingredients like spicy tofu, seared trumpet mushrooms, and carrot tempura.

Nomoo $$$$ 7507 Melrose Ave

Life is cyclical - the old replaces the new, Drew Barrymore now books mom roles on television, and the Johnny Rockets on Melrose has been taken over by vegan burgers. Nomoo (get it?), is a new plant-based restaurant that serves Impossible cheeseburgers and “hot chicken” sandwiches made with fermented seitan. Plus, 10% of their monthly profits are donated to an animal rights charity - which should make you feel better about all of the water you wasted taking that 40-minute stress shower last night.

Krystal Thompson Pearl River Deli $ $ $ $ Chinese in Chinatown $$$$ 727 N Broadway #130

After starting as a pop-up, Pearl River Deli made like that tattoo you got while blacked out of broccoli conducting an orchestra (it’s Chopin Broccoli, and it was not funnier at the time) and has gone permanent. Located in a bare-bones space in the Far East Plaza (you might need to wade through the line at Howlin’ Ray’s to find it, F.Y.I.), this order-at-the-counter Chinatown joint is serving Cantonese dishes like char siu over rice, silky shrimp-and-egg scrambles, and Macau pork chops on pineapple buns.

Burgers 99 $ $ $ $ Burgers in Hancock Park , Hollywood $$$$ 131 South La Brea Ave

With shelves filled with ’90s NBA bobbleheads and Happy Meal toys, this retro smashburger spot hits the nostalgia button hard, and will transport you back to the days when you wore low-cut jeans and got dropped off at the mall in your mom’s Dodge Caravan. Owned and operated by the brothers behind Badmaash, this new burger joint on La Brea keeps it pretty simple - look out for single and double patties, a bacon burger, hot dogs, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, fries, and milkshakes. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

La Camarona $$$$ 181 E Glenarm St

If the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the words “Mexican seafood” is “I want more of it,” then La Camarona might just be for you. This new all-you-can-eat restaurant in Pasadena focuses on the flavors and cooking styles of the coastal state of Nayarit, which means hot and cold dishes like ceviches, aguachiles, steaks, and whole fried tilapia. Do not eat beforehand.

Pascal Shirley Hermanito $ $ $ $ Bar Food , Tacos , Mexican in Sawtelle Japantown , West LA $$$$ 2024 Sawtelle Blvd

Unlike hanging out with your actual little brother (for the record, this is a joke, Noah), Hermanito is a bar/restaurant where you might actually have some fun. Located on Sawtelle Blvd., this new neighborhood spot has a menu filled with “snaxxx” (their word, not ours) like chicharrones and shrimp sandwiches, and tacos served on Sonoran-style flour tortillas, as well as a variety of mezcal-filled cocktails.

El Prince $$$$ 2171 W Florence Ave

El Prince is a new Middle Eastern restaurant in Inglewood, and perhaps the first place we’ve ever covered inside of a Quick Mart. Located amongst rows of produce and cleaning supplies, this all-day Halal spot features plates of shawarma, kofta, and shish taouk (grilled chicken skewers marinated in yogurt, lemon juice, and garlic) served over rice or fries, as well as wraps made to order.

The Crossroads Between Objectivity and Nostalgia

Something I’ve spent the majority of my “adult” life grappling with is the intersection between art and nostalgia. It’s a concept that I’ve only recently come to recognize but has essentially acted as the thesis for this entire blog without me even knowing it. As a result, this post feels like what the past year’s worth of writing on here has been building towards.

Reflecting on my most recent metalcore-infested post I began to think “why do I love these albums so much?” Even within that blog where I’m gushing over these albums, I repeatedly felt the need to clarify that I don’t think they’re great feats of art. Is that because I’m embarrassed of liking them? Probably… But there’s more to it than that.

In that same post, I also talked about my positive (or not-so-positive) memories associated with each album, and I even gave a wine-like pairing of what I was doing while listening to each album. Earlier this week Of Mice & Men surprise released a new song called “Back To Me” with their new line-up sans-Carlile. It’s always a bummer to see someone leave a band (especially due to health-related issues) but it’s also a bummer to hear a band without the member that you held most dear. Listening to the new song led me down a Tidal-binge on the rest of the band’s greatest hits. Over their eight years as a band OM&M have undergone a significant shift in sound, transitioning from breakdown-heavy metalcore, then nu-metal, and more recently full-on buttrock. It’s not a transition I love, but God knows I respect their freedom to chase that artistic dragon. When I pressed play on the band’s 2011 standout O.G. Loko I realized something: when all’s said and done, this track (from an album I’ve barely listened to) didn’t sound all that different from the band’s 2010 album that I hold so dear. Someone coming to the band from an outside perspective would probably find the two indistinguishable.

A brief history of Of Mice & Men

I’ll be the first to admit metalcore is a genre that breeds repetition and cookie-cutter behavior. Fans know what they want, and most bands are happy to give it to them. That’s another one of the reasons I respect OM&M’s shift toward nu-metal and away from their origins: it’s a risk. At the end of the day, there’s not that much of a different between the band’s first album and the second. The difference for me was that I listened to the first ravenously during an awesome time in my life, and only listened to the second a few times at most. There’s probably someone a year my junior who feels the exact same way about the band’s second album compared to their third. And so on and so forth.

To get away from metalcore (and back to myself) I’ve spent the last several months ranking and re-ranking my favorite albums of all time. Some of the categories like classic rock were easy. Not only because it’s a genre I’ve been listening to my entire life, but those albums and songs have saturated our culture for decades. There’s some sort of rough consensus in the collective unconscious that The Beatles are great… and you know what? I agree. Because of this weird conflux of pop culture, history, and personal experiences, I can easily say that Abbey Road is not only my favorite Beatles album, it’s also an incredible piece of art that I feel no shame (or risk) in elevating on a high pedestal.

Then I look at hip-hop. The genre’s been around since long before I was born, but it was a genre I only started to personally engage with a few years ago. As a result, most of my favorite hip-hop albums are from that exact time frame. I know they’re not all “incredible” (at least not as incredible as Abbey Road) but part of that is recognizing my own inexperience with the genre. I know, I know, I know there’s older hip-hop I need to listen to that are essentially as “classic” as Abbey Road, but it takes time and effort to become fluent in a genre. I have barely listened to Jay-Z, UGK, Madvillain, Biggie, 2 Pac, and a whole host of other artists that I know are great. It’s like that guy who hasn’t watched Star Wars. He knows it’s a good movie, but you incredulously asking “Seriously? You haven’t watched STAR WARS?” just discourages him.

I recently watched Casablanca for the first time a week ago (shout out to Mother’s Day). That’s a movie that’s frequently held up with Citizen Kane and Godfather as “literally the best movie of all time.” For years I’ve known that it’s great. It’s been on my “to watch” list… and you know what? It was pretty good. What can I add to the conversation about Casablanca that hasn’t been said before besides ‘yep, everyone was right, it is really good.’ There are other movies like Fight Club and From Dusk Till Dawn that I recognize aren’t peaks of cinematic triumph or artistic feats like Casablanca is, but you know what? I like them more. I like them more because I’ve seen them more, I’ve had more time to digest them, and I have more positive memories tied to them. That doesn’t mean they’re better than Casablanca, but I like them far more.

Back to music.

In creating that list of my favorite albums I’ve fudged a lot of genres, added categories, and made incredibly arbitrary distinctions, all because I wanted to fit more albums on there. I don’t put all those genres or albums on the same level. My favorite metalcore album does not stack up to my favorite classic rock album, that’s comparing apples to oranges. Or apples to pool cues.

A separate conversation within this is exactly how long an album should take to be placed among your “favorites.” And even more: what about an album that’s new to you, but “classic” within its own field?

Up until this year… Hell, up until a couple months ago, I’d never listened to The Strokes debut album Is This It. Until 2017 the only three Strokes songs I’d heard were “Reptilia” (shoutout Rock Band 1), “New York City Cops” (shoutout iTunes DJ, you will be missed), and “When It Started” (shoutout Spider-Man 1 soundtrack). Ironic since “New York City Cops” and “When It Started” were swapped on the US version of Is This It due to 9/11… but I’m getting wildly off-topic here.

The point is that it took me seventeen fucking years to listen to one of the greatest “indie” records of my lifetime… But is it fair for me to claim that? Sure I like Is This It a lot, but I’ve only listened to it about 10 times according to last.fm. So is consensus swaying my perception? Is two-decade-old critical acclaim forcing me to enjoy an album more than I really do? Is personal shame making me think higher of the record than I should be? Maybe, but I don’t think so. Is This It is great, no matter how you cut it. Removed of nostalgia, I enjoyed it and continue to play it every couple days.

Meanwhile, another album that didn’t quite make the cut into my favorites list was 2016’s Psychopomp by Japanese Breakfast. It’s an album that I adore, but (again) I’ve only had a handful of months to really sit with the album and let it marinate. As much as I wanted to say ‘this is one of my favorite indie albums’ I couldn’t quite bring myself to do it. This is an album I’ve listened to more than the Strokes, yet it didn’t carry the acclaim of “definitive album of the 2000’s” and thus I didn’t feel comfortable ranking it up against the classics. Same with Car Seat Headrest’s Teens of Denial. I love the album, but I don’t feel comfortable enough with my personal feelings toward it, nor its place in history to confidently place it amongst my favorites of all time.

I’ll admit I’m overthinking all this. All these albums and movies are great, and at the end of the day, nobody really gives a shit about my “list” or ranking of these albums. Yet this is a concept I’ve been struggling with lately on an artistic level. How can you stack an album that you’ve been listening to for a decade up against anything else? How can a movie that been heralded as the greatest of all time (for 75 fucking years) really compare to anything that I’ve seen a dozen times? How do you even begin to compare the two?

To bring this full-circle (and give a total cop-out answer) I think the answer is a case of “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” Those two OM&M albums are great. I think they’re an acquired taste for sure, but an outsider to the genre would probably hear two songs next to each other and probably think ‘these are different songs?’

I think all these qualifiers are sliders. Personal history. Critical acclaim. History. Context. Time. are inextricable from art. I guess I’d argue the art can still be judged on its own in a vacuum, but that’s not how anyone judges it… ever. We hear, see, and experience things on our own terms.

I guess if anything I’m arguing that personal history (nostalgia) is one of the most powerful influencers when it comes to my interpretation and experience of art. I use music like a time-traveling drug. You know that feeling when the holidays hit and you hear “Silent Night” for the first time? I have a calendar year’s worth of songs like that. I have albums that bring me back to distinct times, years, and moments in my life. I love that art can do that. I love that this coming August I can put on Frank Ocean’s Blonde and it will transport me directly back to Summer 2016. That kind of personal connection to music is something that can (sadly) never be duplicated. The beautiful part is that we all have our own narratives like that. We all have a list of albums… or movies…. or food… or podcasts… or whatever that evoke something within us. I’m just far more obsessive about documenting my own.

My own history. My own context. Some far-off part of my own mind is the reason that I don’t like one Of Mice & Men album as much as it’s nearly-identical predecessor. Unfortunately, that conflux is something that can never be fully translated or explained no matter how hard we try. That unique perspective is the one thing we share, even if nothing’s shared. And that’s what we bring to art. That little piece of us that adds onto to something that’s already an inherently human and beautiful and pure creation. It’s what makes art beautiful. It’s what makes the world beautiful.
