i kind of like that a lot of the major contributing characters in the legend of nezha are kiddos , i think it really adds to the story
since a good chunk of said story focuses on how these children function independently of adults while still under the jurisdiction of the adults in their lives. it is supposed to be, in one part, Investiture of the Gods but from Nezha's perspective, in my opinion
They get distracted, they act selfishly and petty, they don't understand some of the things the adults tell them and come to their own conclusions, they're still dependent on others, they have a lot of Big Feelings and don't know what to do with them, adults don't listen to them and tell them what to do, and it's this childish nature they display that also charts their growth and simultaneously reminds us that they're just kids in a war that's much bigger than them.

CQL and Genre Intertextuality
I'm being bashed over the head with the "nhs's fan in CQL is made of xuantie/dark iron" thing again and @poorlittleyaoyao please understand that I am thinking of this constantly since you made that post talking about it because I'm just.
holding my head in my hands bc ye gods the cql show writers were genre savvy in ways that are hilarious but also make me feel like I've been hit upside the head with a waffle iron.
For those of us who are no longer damaged by the post or hadn't seen it (I don't actually know where it's gone bc the search feature doesn't work on this webbed site):
Xuantie/Dark Iron is a Jin Yong created metal that famously was used for the blade of the Dragon Slaying Sabre in the third novel of the Condor Trilogy, 倚天屠龍記/The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber.
The Heaven Reliant Sword 倚天劍 was created from Yang Guo and Xiao Longnv's Gentleman and Lady swords, whilst the Dragon Slaying Saber 屠龍刀 was created from Grandmaster Dugu Seeking-a-Loss's Dark Iron Sword.
Can we please all take a moment to appreciate how NHS's fan not his saber, NHS, from The Family With The Sabers, gets to shout about how his fan is made of xuantie. The most famous for being the metal that made up The Dragon Slaying Saber. His fan. Not his saber. his fan. dark iron. Dragon Slaying Saber. This is so funny I'm about to mcfucking lose it yet again while typing this.
Going back to Grandmaster Dugu Seeking-A-Loss (who appears in both Return of the Condor Heroes and Xiao Ao Jianghu) and his giant pet condor (sadly, only a ROCH feature) who might've been his one true soulmate for a second, this situation from episode 7, when the Yunmeng Siblings are leaving the Cloud Recesses:
Tumblr media
Now, the subtitles here really DO NOT do this line justice because when I first saw it it took me FLAT THE FUCK OUT and I had to lie on the floor laughing for like, 80 seconds before I got my breath back.
Okay, what this line ACTUALLY says is "I am Dugu Qiubai (Grandmaster Dugu Seeking-A-Loss), what's wrong with seeking a match?"
Now, to understand this, we come to this backstory on Dugu Qiubai in XAJH:
“Senior master Dugu Seeking-A-Loss, who created this set of sword techniques, had a name ‘Seeking-A-Loss.’ He had been seeking a loss all his life and still couldn’t get one. Once the sword techniques were executed, he would become unmatched anywhere in the world. Why would he have to defend? If anyone could have forced him to draw his sword back and defend himself, the respectful master would have burst with joy and be delighted beyond measure.” Feng Qingyang said. “Dugu Seeking-A-Loss, Dugu Seeking-A-Loss,” Linghu Chong muttered as he imagined how the senior master had wandered about the Martial World, unmatched anywhere, with only his sword, and couldn’t even find a single one who was capable of forcing him into a defending stance. That was truly admirable.
from Chapter Ten of XAJH: Sword Training.
"If anyone could force him to draw his sword back to defend himself, the grandmaster would have burst with joy and be delighted beyond measure" DO YOU SEE WHY JC STARTED CALLING WWX SHAMELESS NOW. they're JUNIORS. WWX is calling himself "the greatest man of all, who'd sought the feeling of losing just ONCE being forced to defend himself just ONCE in a LIFETIME" and saying "LWJ might be my equal. my soulmate. the loss I was seeking my whole life."
All 15 years of it I'm sure, WWX.
I'm not going to get into finding martial arts manuals or a respected grandmaster who taught you incredible things in a cave bc 1) LHC and Feng Qingyang up there are sitting together, in a cave and LHC is being taught incredible things and 2) Duan Yu from Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils once found the magic finger lasers of ultra laser in a cave. In front of the statue of a goddess. (don't talk about the dancing goddess statue now, Tav. We don't have time for that in this post.)
Not kidding the intertextuality of CQL and how much it plays with and against the tropes of its genre, especially other wuxia tv adaptations as well as wuxia novels is insane. There's other ones I'm missing for certain and these were just the most funny to me, personally, but! just! oh my god! insane! insane! SO funny, so clever in so many ways

3 am in the morning and my brain insist that xiao shunyao will make a good yang guo especially the older one in his 16 years wait for xiao longnv. He got that flavor of handsomeness where its more rough and wild instead of delicate looking. Man already build like a tank, he can fit in beautifully with a good styling in that kind of wuxia drama.

WORD OF HONOR: PRESENTING THE ROMANCE THROUGH TRADITIONAL WUXIA TROPES.
There is a reason why to the Chinese audience, WenZhou's relationship is indisputably romantic. It's because there are very specific visual cues used to show romance in wuxia, and WOH uses the exact same visual language on WenZhou. These tropes are blatantly recognizable from the wuxia/guzhuang dramas we all grew up watching.
1. Fated meeting in a peach blossom forest.
Although in this case, fate has a name and it is Wen Kexing.
Tumblr media
2. Sucking poison from the other's shoulder.
Worth mentioning that in the book, the wound was on Zhou Zishu's arm. The drama deliberately took it up a notch and chose the more tropey version.
Tumblr media
3. When the disguise (usually the female lead disguised as a man) is removed, the love interest can't stop staring.
Later on (ep 13) there is a scene where Zhou Zishu is trying on a fake beard that looks exactly like the ones female leads use to disguise themselves.
Tumblr media
4. Spinning together in mid-air during a fight, the love interest's hands on the other's waist. Slow motion. Eyes firmly locked together.
Usually male lead saving the female lead. For example, there is a very similar scene between Yang Guo and Xiao Longnv from Condor Heroes. In fact, if you've seen it, you'll recognize similarities between the visual cues used for the two couples.
Tumblr media
5. Martial siblings falling in love.
Yes, this is a common thing in wuxia. And no, it is not incest, nor does it make the dynamic any less romantic. What the hell. Martial siblings are often coded as romantic in wuxia, and there are actual examples in the show itself: Wen Kexing's parents were shixiong/shimei and Gao Xiaolian eventually married her shixiong, Deng Kuan.
Tumblr media
6. One of them getting kidnapped (usually the female lead) by their sect/family and the love interest swooping in dramatically to save them.
And yes, riding on the same horse.
Tumblr media
7. One of them is from an evil/unorthodox sect and it causes problems for the couple. The person is hailed as a villain and the other one challenges all of jianghu to stand by their beloved.
Their confrontation with Ye Baiyi is also a good example: Zhou Zishu defending Wen Kexing despite him being the Ghost Valley Master and choosing to die with him instead letting Ye Baiyi kill him alone. Going against the jianghu is a common trial for lovers in wuxia. Yang Guo and Xiao Longnv went through something similar as well.
Tumblr media
8. The male lead fixing the female lead's hair and putting a hairpin on it. Then she looks at her reflection on bronze mirror. This usually happens the morning after the wedding night
This is a very blatant romance trope in guzhuang, so much that I instinctively went "they got married??" when I first saw it. A lot of us were surprised this even made it in. They even had a lingering shot of Zhou Zishu smiling at a bronze mirror!
Tumblr media
9. Falling off a cliff together, or one falling and the other jumping in immediately to save them.
WOH gave us both versions. The first one was before they found Senior Long (which also gave us another common trope: the couple spending time in a cave while the other is injured/knocked out) and the cliff scene in the latter episodes where Zhou Zishu jumps in after Wen Kexing.
Tumblr media
10. Dual Cultivation to save/heal the other.
Know who else cultivated in a cold place and also ended up as immortal lovers after going through trials and tribulations for each other? Yang Guo and Xiao Longnv again! (Yes, I am a big fan of Condor Heroes) arguably the most famous couple in wuxia. If you've seen the wucai bros reaction series, they all clapped and said "It's just like in Condor Heroes! They are immortal lovers!"
Tumblr media
There is honestly a lot more, depending on how detailed you want to get. The point is that it wasn't just the flirting, the hugs, or the poetry. Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu's relationship itself was presented in the visual language of traditional wuxia romance, but this time in a love story between two men. WenZhou was written in the language of love.

Qie Shi Tian Xia (且试天下) / Who Rules the World
Episode 1
Favorite Weapon - Bai Fengxi’s white sash.
[ID: six gifs from Who Rules the World, arranged in two columns. Left column: Bai Fengxi (played by Zhao Lusi) unleashes her sash (top) to slap a man in blue that was annoying her (middle). and then returning the sash to her sleeve (bottom). Right column: Bai Fengxi laughs (top), sends out the sash (middle), wraps the sash around a wounded man’s waist and pulls him towards herself (bottom)]
This is one of my favorite wuxia weapons. In return of the condor heroes, Xiao LongNv (little dragon girl) has one with a bell on the end. Also, this is the same weapon as Xie Lian’s Ruo’ye. It’s so fun!

any opinion on new remake of 神鵰俠侶?
Personally, I’ve only seen some promo pics, so not too sure what my final thoughts are.
I think that they’re definitely trying to encompass some elements of the 2006 remake, especially with the costume design of Xiao Longnv, it’s very similar to Liu Yifei’s version. Also, I’ll bet that they’re going to use a past theme song, bc that’s what they did with the new version of 射雕英雄传 and 倚天屠龙记.
About the actors, I don’t really have an opinion on them yet, I definitely don’t think the Xiao Longnv in this remake is going to be as iconic as Carman Lee of Liu Yifei.  I really like, however, that they’re using lesser known actors, bc I don’t have preformed opinions on them.
Honestly, I’ve seen the newest remakes on the other two books in the Condor Hero trilogy, and they were decent but nothing spectacular. At this point, it’s going to be hard to remake these three books, and have it be as iconic as the past remakes. It’s almost as if they’re remaking it just for the sake of having a newer version. I just hope that it brings in a new generation of wuxia fans like 射雕英雄传 2008 did for me.

Okay so i have been trying to get info on who longnv is and what her role is jttw because i always see tags and i saw a particular post on tumblr where i was scrolling through the jttw tag and i saw her but when i went to search on the jttw character list she wasnt there so now im like "wait...what?"
So pls if its not much of a hassle can you just pls tell who she is and what her role is in the story cause i have been trying to find stuff about her but end up fruitless
I’m surprised you haven’t found much information about her… She has a Wikipedia page so if you were looking in English, she would’ve come up.
But honestly, she isn’t really referenced in Xiyouji because she doesn’t really have a role in the story besides being an assistant. She’s Guanyin's other disciple besides Muzha but since Muzha is doing all the work, and has all the lines as the go-between got GuanYin and other characters Longvu is only really mentioned in passing standing next to GuanYin in certain scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see she IS mentioned but she doesn't SAY anything really.
As for history, she has a whole background of lore in Buddhist mythos as she has a long history. I talked a bit about her here and here when talking about Gaunyin and who she is a bit. So simply to say she’s not really a “character” within the story as she doesn’t have any dialogue or actions, but rather she has a lot of lore surrounding her that just isn’t referenced in Xiyouji as it’s not needed for the narrative. She is still mentioned within the novel just never interacted with! So it’s kind of like the novel references her more so!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Put it simply the most common lore I see about it is that she is the granddaughter of The Dragon King and the daughter of Ao Guang, the same dragon king of the East that Wukong took his staff and armor from and the same dragon king that has his son’s, Ao Bing, spine ruled out by Nezha in his legend. Needless to say, the east dragons have a lot of people messing with them. There are more legends of her that I haven't really gone into but she def has been around for a long time in Buddhist lore.
And Longvu works under Gaunyin and works with Muzha. And I don’t know if you are aware, but Muzha is the older brother of Nezha… so she is working with the sibling of the guy that ripped out her older brother’s spine.
Which I think is hilarious personally.
Also, that would make her Bailong's cousin too!
Small Heavens.
But yeah! We don’t get to see her lot in media. I think I’ve only ever seen a depiction of her when she gets actual lines in the 1999 series where she and Muzha interact with Red Boy when Gaunyin comes to recruit him. Also in Fei Ren Zai Non Human! I haven’t read all or watch that series yet but I know she is depicted quite often there as well with Gaunyin and Muzha and Red Boy (now Shancai). Also possible in the Nezha tv series from the early 2000s? Haven’t seen that one, but I do know there is a Dragon Girl that he befriends in the series!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If anytime knows more media she is in please chime in!!
So it’s no trouble at all!! She has more lore outside Xiyouji so I would suggest looking beyond that scope!
Here are some links to help you read about her! I hope this helps!

hey tav, quick question! i just read your jin yong post and i'm new to his novels so. i was wondering in which one does the. uh. shizunfucking occur 👀 asking for a friend, as they say. thanks in advance! <3
HELLO FRIEND SO GLAD YOU ASKED.
The Shizunfucking (okay I have to clarify, the age difference here is somewhere between like, 3-7 years, SHIZUN is not very much older than her disciple here.) occurs in ROCH, Return of the Condor Heroes, which is the second book in the Condor Trilogy and the direct sequel to LOCH (Legend of the Condor Heroes) following Yang Guo (the disciple in question).
I won't spoil too much of the plot but like, this is where we get the stereotypical extremely beautiful ice cold dressed in white shizun and the besotted cheeky disciple from.
Also they have an ice bed. That she makes him sleep on. And at one point they have to practice martial arts together naked or it wouldn't work and they'd die. And they got married with a dead woman's wedding clothes and also she tells him that since she promised to care for him forever if she feels like she's dying she'll kill him and then put him in the same coffin as her and shut it so they'll die together etc etc.
And also at one point she pitches herself off a cliff. And they get horribly poisoned by the "IF YOU FUCK (or even just get a hornt boner tbh) YOU'LL DIE" poison. (do you see some common shizunfucker tropes here, bc MAN OH MAN.) btw this book was written in 1959-1961. They just let people put this in the NEWSPAPER in INSTALLMENTS like this.
And uh. yeah. Okay a lot happens in this book and it's not really ABOUT Shizunfucking but it's also not not about Shizunfucking. Like all Jin Yong books, this is a very book.
Also dw I've spoiled nothing about the plot.
iirc there is not an official translation and the ROCH adaptation everyone yells about is the 95 version which I can only find on youtube in Cantonese but it DOES have Carman Lee (who plays Lan Yi in CQL) as Xiao Longnv, which is a huge plus. I don't thiiiink you necessarily need to know what a LOCH is to read/watch ROCH but also I feel like it would make sense to watch/read LOCH first?
Feel free to send me follow-up questions!

I wanted to ask about the gender of demons (Yaoguai). How, a while ago I found out about a version that said that the green snake (from the legend of the white snake) was a male but changed to be a female to be the sister of the white snake. so I wanted to ask how gender works for the Yaoguai (I also found out that Longnu changed gender to that of a boy). Do they care? Or is it more free for them to change or choose a gender? because I understand that some I also wanted to ask if the Yaoguai who cultivate can choose whether to be a man or a woman when taking human form? Does that mean that when they are animals still farming, they still do not have a defined gender? Could we say that they are hermaphrodites or not? Is there something like hermaphrodites in Chinese culture? or some character like that?
Great question! The funny thing about Yaoguai is that on some level they really aren't tied down to the idea of gender or sex considering that their humanoid body is a production of their cultivation. In most cases from I have seen it does follow that animals usually transform into their given sex like Bull = Man (where Cow would be Lady) being an obvious example but there are cases where that is not always the case. I do not think that Yaoguai were intersex when they were in their animal form (any animal can be a Yaoguai it doesn't depend on their sex), but they are able to change than they have their cultivation (I can't tell you what animals think about gender, I don't think animals think about that stuff honestly). Also, I'm not sure if there are any intersex mythos figures but I have been told Lan Caihe one of the 8 Immortals is someone who is "genderless" and could be regarded as such?
A prime example that I didn't even know people were talking about is in Xiyouji when the Jade Rabbit was transformed into a woman. I was under the impression that most Jade Rabbit content was that they were a girl as that was how I was instructed to the character but it was only a few years ago that I saw that people referenced to the Jade Hare as a boy. In this case it wasn't just that the Jade Rabbit transformed into a girl but that the cultivated humanoid body that they created on earth was always a girl regardless their animal body.
But there have been other cases of Chinese mythos having character change their physical forms. Such as Guanyin's original myth being from an Indian Prince and slowly transforming into a more feminine form. And Longnu went from a young girl into a young man instead when they were cultivating through Buddhist scriptures.
But yes White Snake is considered in modern media a kind of trans-experience as it does have similar struggles of having to "pass" in a society in order to live peacefully. White Snake not only does this physically but in the story as well as she tries to come off as completely human for the sake of her husband and herself so they can continue their marriage. It is a beautiful allegorical representation that I think can be interpreted as such because of how dangerous or scary it is to be vulnerable in a society that is built on principles that reject who you are. There is a great summary of these kinds of portrayals done by AntidotefortheAwkward here!
But technically speaking considering that a lot of terminology I see when it comes to cultivation (at least in literature) do show how the body is simply an illusion and how to become enlightened (or cultivated at least) is about how to overcome the body and focus on one's mind. In those terms, for Yaoguai the humanoid body they create for themselves is simply just another illusion that they have created in order to reach a more human-like experience. Their humanoid body isn't what they were born with but something that they have crafted through thousands of years of study and training. So it would be well within their reach for them to choose any and every aspect of their body as long as they continue to cultivate. The longer they train, the more control they have over how they are perceived. That is why you could see in modern media, that the more powerful a Yaoguai is, the more they look like a human, while weaker Yaoguai look more like their animal forms. And that is because the more you cultivate the more in control of the illusion of the body you have.
I can’t say for certain how common it is for Yaoguai to change their gender as we rarely even get to see their original animal forms but I will say that the few examples we do have do show that Yaoguai are able to change their humanoid bodies to what they want the world to perceive by how powerful they are to do so. All their bodies are constructions of their own cultivation and as such they are open to their personal preferences. We do see that most Yaoguai do enjoy the body type of being larger and more menacing for the sake of presenting their power, but there is also cases of Yaoguai coming off as more petite and feminine in order to better trick humans to their will. While not all cases Yaoguai create human forms for malicious purposes (such as White Snake and Green Snake) we do see that in most if not all examples, Yaoguai do have control of their human bodies to a great extent. I hope that kinda explains some things!
