"Foliage, Flowers, and Feelings, Oh My!" in Step By Step Ep. 8.

The flower motifs were rampant throughout all of episode eight, more so than the majority of any of the previous episodes. Maybe I was made aware because Jeng brought attention to them while he was preparing for his date, ahem, market research with Pat this time around, but man, everywhere I looked on screen, I could only focus on the flowers.

Since a lot of the shots that had the flowers were blurred, take my analysis with a heavy amount of skepticism. Not to mention, my discussion of the flowers and their meanings are deriving from a Western point of view; flowers and their significance can differ greatly between cultures. [Specifically my understanding derives from my Latin-American and American upbringing with the meanings behind certain flowers and any research I came upon, so if you have any better cultural understanding that is more applicable, feel free to sound off].

There was so much imagery with flowers in this episode that I'm going to attempt to organize this analysis with specific scenes where I, personally, could not help but immediately notice the flowers and become hyper-aware of them.

Love Blooms Best at a Restaurant

While we see flowers and plants in the first quarter of the episode, they're typically at the very corners of the foreground, heavily blurred, or rather small, where it's presence is easily forgotten (i.e., the tiny plant on Put's living room table.) The plants and flowers really start to become a greater motif after Jeng requests the first restaurant to fill the empty space that he rented out with bouquets.

Now there are so many different flowers that make up the several bouquets that are brought in by the restaurant staff, so I'll briefly mention the most commercially known and their significance, while delving a little deeper into the flowers that were a bit harder to identify but that I strongly believe are in the bouquets.

First, the most obvious of the flowers were the red and pink roses that make a portion of the vase that is put at the table where Jeng and Pat sit. Pink roses typically take on the significance of admiration and gratitude, while red roses are generally used to signify love and passion. Hidden behind those, which we are only able to catch a glimpse at in far-away shots before the vase gets turned, are yellow snapdragons. There is a longstanding belief that when you hide a snapdragon, it's going to make you appear to be enchanting and amiable; this often results with the snapdragon being correlated with good-luck and deception.

Meanwhile behind Jeng, there is a huge bouquet that is made up of pink lilies, and what I believe to be, but not 100% sure, pink orchids. Pink lilies are generally used to depict new love, friendship, and admiration, while pink orchids are generally for thoughtfulness, refinement, and mature charm.

The flowers here seem to be very representative of both Jeng's mentality and the current state of relationship that Pat and Jeng have. Prior to this, Pat had gone from cancelling their meeting (destroying any hope that Jeng had) to asking if he was still up to going out (restoring it slightly, thank you Ae and Beam.) Jeng has made it apparent that he admires Pat for his talent and work ethic, praising Pat when he does a job well done, but this admiration has gone far beyond "you're a great worker", which Pat is completely unaware of. For Pat, this is just another work event that he is doing as a favor to his boss, without knowing that Jeng wishes is more than just work and how much effort he put into making this "not-date" "date-like". While deception has an incredibly negative connotation, in a way this is applicable here, this is Jeng's pretense to spend more time with Pat outside of work.

Jeng has been treading the line of boss and loverboy lightly, because he is more than aware of the consequences that could occur due to his attraction and feeling towards Pat. So he does what he does best, delve into work and find a way to incorporate it so he can spend some quality time with Pat, even if Pat isn't fully aware of his intentions, which is why it catches Jeng off-guard when Pat points out how much this outing resembles a date. This is a new chapter that Jeng is trying to navigate and breach, even without fully knowing the way to get there. He's learning how Pat ticks, when Pat is silent and what it likely means, and how much pain and burden Pat carries, even when its unnecessary. He's seen Pat at some of his worst moments, at his tactless moments, and he's falling for all sides of him, even if Pat is fully oblivious at this point. And Jeng is so proud of himself, when he gets the restaurant to look just right for when Pat arrives.

Running Leads the Heart to the Silver Trumpet Tree

The second full shot of flowers in this episode was after Pat and Jeng narrowly made it out from running into Chot, specifically after they finally came to a stop after sneakily running away from him, in order to not be caught fraternizing outside of the workplace. When they finally come to a stop, Silver [Yellow] Trumpet Tree [Tabebuia Aurea], also known as Lueang India (Yellow India) in Thai, cover the background when Pat and Jeng have finally come to a halt. While it can be easily mistaken with the Golden Shower Trees, which I believe is the national flower of Thailand, the Yellow Trumpet trees are as common but are distinct in the clusters that they form.

While the there is no distinct meaning or symbolism behind Silver Trumpet Tree, the Trumpet flowers, generally, have a more positive interpretation on its symbolism. Yellow Trumpet flowers tend to be referred to the Angel's Trumpet, which really leads to the auspicious significance that is attached. Depending on the culture that is interpreting the flower, the significance of the trumpet flower can range from prosperity and good luck to new beginnings.

Here, we find ourselves with Pat and Jeng running off in an attempt to avoid being seen by Chot. Jeng had just gone through the effort of making renting out the prior restaurant and decorating with as many bouquets as possible in attempt to make the non-date, date-adjacent. Yet, while this plan seems to be partially ruined, I think Jeng should be thanking Chot. For the first time, they held hands and weren't letting go. While Put and Pat may have been balanced physically, Pat was always being left behind by Put, even if it was unintentional. Put was the one leading their relationship, taking the first steps to enter and exit out of Pat's life, yet in comparison with Jeng, while Jeng may tower over Pat, he has always been the one to push Pat rather than pull, this was the first time that he was pulling Pat with him. And let me just say, Jeng was not the first one to let go. Their relationship is evolving.

Pat had cancelled meeting with Jeng, after not feeling well about breaking up with Put. Put was his first love, he was the one that had been abandoned, but it's still difficult to come to terms that the love and man you had idealized prior was no longer the man that you were in love with, no matter how hard you attempt to fix together the pieces that had remained. Yet, instead of wallowing in the pain, Pat reached out again to Jeng and asked him if they could still go out, even though he was the one the previously opted out. If Pat being proactive, even when clueless, isn't a step into a new beginning, I don't what is—

Barriers made visible with Peonies and Peperomia

After running away from Chot, they found themselves in a new restaurant, one that partakes in the tradition of plate smashing. Throughout this who sequence, we have the the ornate bouquet in the background that is creating a visual barrier, dividing the restaurant in two sides. In doing so, we're also seeing a rather physical divide between Jeng and Pat. Now I'm sure there are color theories that play into this, with the hues of purple at play, but we don't get a closer, albeit still blurred, look of the flowers until Pat gets up to smash his own plate.

There are two plants that I'm almost certain that are making up the parts of the bouquet. First, what I believe to be red peonies, specifically closed darker red peonies, not yet fully bloomed. Second, it seems that the foliage that is being used to fill the bouquet is watermelon peperomia.

Now Peonies are one of the flowers that have a huge variety of origin stories, so I'm going to stick with the Greek origin story of the Red Peonies since they were in a Greek-themed restaurant (where they're smashing plates to throw away their bad luck). In a water-downed version of the origin story, the red peony is tied to a nymph named Paeonia. Paeonia was incredibly beautiful and attracted the attention of Apollo, resulting in a lot of flirtatious exchanges between the two of them. As they were flirting, Paeonia becomes aware of Aphrodite's presence and turns deep red. Out of spite, Aphrodite turns Paeonia into a red peony. As a result, red peonies are typically understood as a sign of bashfulness, passion, and love.

On the other hand, watermelon peperomia, or more generally, peperomia tends to take on the significance of hope and in certain areas of Latin America, are given as gifts to say that 'Everything will be alright.'

First off, this whole sequence of scenes took me incredibly long to get through just because it felt so intimate both due to Jeng's dilemma in confessing and Pat's own internal fight against his misery.

This whole portion was filled with different points where Pat unintentionally gave Jeng openings. From ordering the Lovers' Special to Pat telling Jeng directly, "I prefer the time that we were nothing like a boss and subordinate." The frankness that Pat was giving Jeng, even if he was a bit tipsy, renewed Jeng's hope that just maybe Pat shares some of the same feelings that he does. As @respectthepetty mentioned here Jeng keeps having an internal battle with his love for Pat this whole episode, so the frankness that Pat is gifting Jeng is like a crumb trail that Jeng is more than happy to swallow up. Giving him a semblance of hope, that just maybe, they could go back to who they were before they met as boss and employee.

Which is what leads into the scene of Jeng's imaginary confession to Pat. This whole series of scenes we're given a glimpse into Jeng's internal monologue, and as @shouldiusemyname stated here, so much of Jeng's internal conflict deals with the uncertainty of where he stands with Pat, because even though he's doing everything to subtly show his interest, Pat is rather oblivious. Throughout this whole dinner, Jeng was sending smoke signals that Pat kept putting out. It's palpable that this is out of Jeng's comfort zone, but he is still trying. Yet, he sees the glimpses of pain that Pat has on his shoulder, and instead of wishing for his own happiness or for Pat's love, instead he wishes that everything will get better for Pat. He, very literally, smashes away Pat's sadness.

Moss my heart and hope to die

If I thought Pat and Jeng were surround by plants and flowers before, when they made their way to the speakeasy, they were not only in a presumed queer bar that Jeng frequents [@chicademartinica reaction really mirrored mine here], but they were surrounded by foliage in every room of this bar. The main distinction between the plants here and in other scenes is that the vast majority of the plants in the bar seemed to be non-flowering. Yet, the greenery was always present, either in an actual planter or even as a mural on the walls and beams of this bar.

Now there were so many leafy greens here, that it would be rather difficult to even attempt to pinpoint what plants are where during what time, but I will say the Spanish Moss, that was adorning the exterior of the speakeasy entrance and framing the right side of the shot, was very apparent.

There's a couple legends that come with the significance of Spanish Moss, but the most popular one derives from Spanish legend. According to Spanish lore, a Spanish explorer [some times told to be a pirate] had attempted to 'buy' a beautiful native woman. Obviously, she feared him and ended up running away, attempting to flee his grasp. He pursued her and in a final attempt to escape, she climbed high up into a tree. In his attempt to capture her he follows her up the tree, but becomes entangled in the tree and dies there, the only thing that remained was his 'grey beard' that continued to grow and spread throughout the tree.

Spanish moss, when used spiritually, is typically used to promote protection for the home, as a sign of security, and a general promise of protection. While some may have a preconceived notion of the plant being parasitic, they are also known for the healing qualities that they are able to provide.

Jeng had a specific purpose when he took Pat along to the bar that he frequents with Jaab and Pat goes along because, as @wen-kexing-apologist stated, he's being self-destructive and wants to forget all the pain from his second break-up with Put. Jeng was more than aware that Pat, even though he was shooting him smiles and having a generally good time for the most part, was struggling, hence why he insisted on one more outing before sending him home alone where he knew that Pat would be suffering alone.

Instead, he brings him to the one spot that, very likely, only his inner-circle would know about. This isn't just about the market research they're conducting, it wasn't even on the list that Pat had drawn up so that they could examine and consider applying to Jeng's own restaurant. A line was being crossed, a literal physical barrier in the shape of hidden bookshelf door, because this is Jeng bringing Pat into his personal life. Jeng has some degree of notoriety, which we haven't explicitly been show to what degree except for very select few moments, but everyone keeps mentioning [@respectthepetty has a great post collecting all these moments.] This speakeasy is likely a safe-haven for Jeng, a reprieve from the insane work-life balance that he lacks. This is Jeng inviting Pat into his "home"; this is where Jeng brings Pat to distract him from the pain that he is carrying.

The Spanish Moss adorning the entrance to Jeng's hidden reprieve, while can seem ominous at first glance, is actually an invitation of where Jeng can offer more to Pat. Yet, while Jeng is so love-stricken by Pat that his brain keeps short-circuiting, he knows that his love isn't what Pat needs at the moment. No matter how much he wants to confess, he instead offers to be Pat's safe-haven, much like this bar has been to him. A place, a person, where Pat can be candid of his emotions, where he can drop the false smiles, really simmer in his feelings and really have someone to depend on rather than running away to another country, because of the pain that he is carrying. A restorative and therapeutic location that Pat can run to, which he didn't have before.

Final Thoughts

Now do I think that the producers and set directors put this much deep thought into every, single, specific flowers that were present in all the scenes in Episode 8? I would be honestly shocked if they did. But, plants and flowers are inserted in the arts to symbolize something. Whether it be new beginnings or blooming love or anything in between, so even if they weren't being so intentional with the specific symbolisms, I do think they were utilizing the botanical references to develop subtle understandings of where Pat and Jeng are in their relationship at the moment.

FAN FICTION: The Untamed Episode 51 "Epilogue"

As much as I love this fandom's fanfiction and fanart that depicts CQL Wangxian becoming canon, sometimes they just feel too good to be true…

So, trying to keep in the style of CQL as a show and the style of romance presented in other C-dramas, here is my attempt at answering: If censorship was no longer an issue, what would a truly realistic Wangxian reveal look like? The following is my attempt at writing a script for a hypothetical Epilogue episode! Think of it as a one-off special. This was a great way for me to try my hand at script-writing, and mimicking the style, translation, and aesthetic of the show.

This is Part 1. Enjoy!

1. EXT. A GRASSY CLIFFSIDE. DAYTIME.

We see Wei Ying playing the flute. He is playing Lan Zhan’s song.

CAMERA ON- WEI YING.

Wei Ying’s eyes are closed as he plays to the wind. He is in a different outfit than we last saw him. Then:

LZ: (Softly, Offscreen) Wei Ying.

Wei Ying stops playing. In slow motion, he lowers the flute and turns. We see him smile, an expression of pure joy.

CUT TO- WIDESHOT.

Lan Zhan is standing a distance away, his white robes shining in the sun. A soft smile is on his face. They share a long look.

CUT TO- ARIAL SHOT.

Slowly, Lan Zhan begins walking towards Wei Ying.

CUT TO- WIDESHOT.

We see Lan Zhan walk towards the camera through tall grass.

CUT TO- SECOND WIDESHOT.

The two men are seen in profile. Lan Zhan stops a few feet in front of Wei Ying. The two men face each other, drinking in the other’s face. Their song plays softly.

WY: Hanguang-Jun.

LZ: (Warmly) You’ve returned.

Wei Ying nods.

WY: I told you that I would. If the past has taught you anything, it is that I will always return to you, Hanguang-Jun.

CUT TO- LAN ZHAN.

Lan Zhan’s breath seems to catch.

CUT TO- WEI YING.

WY: (Earnestly, shyly) It is good to see you, Lan Zhan.

LZ: It is good to see you, too, Wei Ying. You look well.

WY: I am well. (Pause) And you?

LZ: (With meaning) I am well, now.

They share a long look. Wei Ying becomes shy, unsure what to say.

LZ: (Cont.) You have been gone a long time, Wei Ying.

WY: Lan Zhan, I.. (Pause. Lightly) How are things in the cultivation world? So much must have changed since I left.

Lan Zhan does not answer him.

LZ: (Gently, but firmly) Wei Ying, I didn’t expect to see you here.(Subtext: I didn’t expect to see you again.) How long will you be staying in Gusu?

Wei Ying tries to decipher Lan Zhan’s expression, then twirls his flute to avoid his gaze.

WY: (Aloof) Oh, I’m just passing through. Maybe I’ll stay a day, maybe a week, I haven’t kept track of how long I’ve been staying in any one place.

Lan Zhan looks down, softness gone. Wei Ying stops twirling the flute. There is a coldness that blooms between them. Wei Ying realizes he has said something wrong.

WY: Lan Zhan... (Pause. Change of tone) You know, I think yours is the first familiar face I have seen in many months. (He smiles coyly) Stony as it always is, I am happy it’s you that I saw first.

Little Apple pulls away suddenly.

WY: (Cont.) Ay! Except for you of course, Lil Apple. Yes, yes. So sensitive.

He playfully slaps Little Apple’s neck with the reigns and smiles. Lan Zhan says nothing. The coldness remains. Wei Ying tries again.

WY: Tell me, has the food in Cloud Recesses improved since I left?

Lan Zhan obliges the unspoken request.

LZ: If you would like to, you are welcome to come for dinner, and stay in Cloud Recesses for as long as you need to.

Wei Ying smiles softly.

WY: I would be honored to be a guest of his Excellency.

He bows sincerely.

WY: (Cont.) And anyways, even rabbit food is better than going to sleep with an empty stomach under the stars.

He laughs. An obliging smile in response.

LZ: Come, I will walk you back to Cloud Recesses. They will not let you in on your own.

Wei Ying rolls his eyes.

WY: (With affection) Your clan and their rules. Strict as ever.

Lan Zhan takes Little Apple’s reigns and begins walking, Wei Ying follows. They walk shoulder to shoulder in silence. Lan Zhan eyes the ground. Wei Ying eyes Lan Zhan. He smiles softly.

WY: It’s funny, actually. Once I realized I was near Gusu, I indeed hoped that you would find me if I played your song. Now that I know this is how you recognized me, I thought it would be appropriate that it be how you found me again. I have played it here and there- (He stops himself. Subtext: Missing you.) And well, how appropriate I find you back where I started. Don’t think that I’ve forgotten: I am still waiting to hear what you’ve decided to name this song. I’m sure I’ve given you enough time by now.

LZ: I already told you, it has long since had a name.

WY: Well, and you still won’t tell me what it is! Really, it’s unfair. We being the only two people in the world who play it, don’t you think I should know what it’s called? I may have to come up with my own name after all. I have thought of some...

He puts his flute to his chin, feigning contemplation. Lan Zhan looks like he is about to say something, but stops himself. He isn’t upset by Wei Ying’s joking, but he isn’t amused by it either.

WY: Well, maybe I won’t give mine away just yet. I must hear what you’ve come up with first and decide if it is acceptable. (Change of tone) Lan Zhan, is A-Yuan at the Cloud Recesses?

Lan Zhan shakes his head.

LZ: He is gone night hunting with Wen Ning and a few of the other cultivators. They are expected back in a week or so.

Wei Ying is visibly disappointed.

WY: That’s a shame, I was hoping to see him. Is he well?

Lan Zhan nods.

LZ: He is very well. He excels in his studies, and he has now led many night hunts. He is very like you were in skill at that age, but with a more even temperament.

WY: Ah! There was nothing wrong with my temperament! I just also knew how to have fun, that’s all. (Thinking, voiceover) Something I will need to teach A-Yuan, it seems. (Aloud) Lan Zhan, I won’t accept you spreading this type of slander to the cultivators! It’s unfair when I am not here to defend myself!

Lan Zhan smiles lightly.

WY: (Serious) But really, is he being safe? You’re not sending him into danger needlessly?

LZ: He is very capable. Rest assured: He is safe. (Subtext: I have always kept him safe for you.)

WY: Well, I guess if he is trained by Hanguang-Jun, then he must be alright. (Pause. Affronted) Now really, Lan Zhan, I have been gone for how long and you have yet to ask me a single question about where I’ve been or what I’ve been doing. I’m beginning to wonder whether you even missed me at all.

He bumps his shoulder into Lan Zhan.

LZ: (Obligingly) Tell me, where have you been, and what have you seen on your travels these past months, Wei Ying?

Wei Ying smiles and launches into stories we do not get to hear.

CUT TO- ARIAL SHOT.

The two men walk side by side across the spanning mountain landscape.

FADE TO BLACK.

2. EXT.- SILENCE HALL. NIGHT.

FADE IN- A NIGHT SKY.

We see a shot of white orchids in bloom in the foreground. Lan Zhan walks into frame and crosses the threshold of the hall, followed by Wei Ying.

CUT TO- CLOSE UP OF WEI YING.

He looks around, pensive.

FOCUS- THE BED.

We see a flashback to Wei Ying as he first wakes up in Cloud Recesses after 16 years. We see his view of Lan Zhan playing the guqin.

FOCUS- THE TABLE.

We see a flashback to Lan Zhan, pouring him a drink. Lan Zhan looks up at him softly.

FOCUS- THE DOORWAY IN THE ADJACENT ROOM.

We see a flashback to the two men standing side by side in the snow.

BACK TO- PRESENT.

Wei Ying smiles softly at these memories. Lan Zhan is opening a cabinet door across the room. He pulls out 2 bottles of Emperor’s Smile.

WY: (Surprised) Ah! Since when does the honorable Hanguang-Jun keep liquor stored at Cloud Recesses? Imagine the stir it would cause if your disciples knew you were hiding liquor in your quarters. Why do you have that here anyways? Don’t tell me that your tolerance for liquor has improved these past months, I won’t believe it.

Lan Zhan ignores him and instead pours a cup. He places it at the seat across from his. Wei Ying understands the invitation and sits down. He lifts the cup and smells it deeply. Lan Zhan pours himself a cup of tea.

WY: You know, in all my wanderings, far and wide, I sampled many hundreds of local drinks. Not one of them compares to the Emperor’s Smile of Gusu.

He smiles and downs the cup in one gulp. Lan Zhan refills it. Wei Ying lifts the cup again.

WY: A toast.

LZ: To what?

WY: To you! You have gained quite a reputation these past months, you know. There is not a place I traveled where the praises of his Excellency were not sung… (A question) Who I hear has also been appointed as the new clan leader of Lan…

Lan Zhan looks down, but nods. Wei Ying is momentarily surprised, then sighs.

WY: (With feeling) Along with the contents of this cup, you have become a mark of the true greatness of the Lan Clan of Gusu. (Raising his cup, with a smile) So, a toast!

He downs it. Lan Zhan smiles, pleased with the compliment, and drinks his tea. He refills Wei Ying’s cup again.

WY: (Shaking his head) Clan Leader Lan... Lan Zhan, why on Earth has your brother stepped down?

LZ: After the events at the Guanyin temple, Brother has been overwhelmed with guilt. He feels that he should have perceived Jin Guangyao’s true nature, and that many evils could have been avoided if his judgement had not been clouded. (Pause) He has confined himself to the cold ice pond as penance.

WY: (Shocked) The cold ice pond? For how long?

LZ: He is not being held. He will contemplate as long as he needs to.

WY: But... How could he have known? Jin Guangyao was a snake. No one perceived him, not even his own family. Your brother is being too hard on himself.

Lan Zhan lifts the teapot and begins pouring himself more tea.

LZ: Nevertheless, he holds himself accountable. He was Jin Guangyao’s sworn brother. If he was not responsible for stopping his evil, who was?

Lan Zhan stops pouring the tea, realizing the parallels between his brother’s situation and theirs of the past. This is not lost on Wei Ying. A shyness blooms between them. They meet each other’s eyes briefly before looking away. Each man takes a drink.

WY: (After a long moment) Will it be painful?

Lan Zhan looks up, surprised. His eyes ask what Wei Ying knows. Once he realizes, he sighs, looks down, and nods solemnly.

LZ: He will suffer, but he will survive.

WY: (Shyly) Your brother told me about your confinement there. Ah- But don’t be angry with him! I made him tell me. Besides, he knew you would never tell, no matter how I may try and force you. (Pause) I was gone, Lan Zhan. It wasn’t necessary for you to suffer so.

LZ: I accepted my punishment willingly. My conscious is clear.

WY: (After a long moment) 3 years there, and 300 whips. And... that brand on your chest... How did you come by that? Your brother did not say.

Lan Zhan seemingly ignores him.

LZ: There is other news you should know. The Su clan has been dissolved. Its members must repent and accept punishment in order to return to their parent clans, or else face exile. Also, the Jin clan has assumed new leadership.

WY: (Brightly) Ah? Jin Rulan? How is my nephew faring?

LZ: The memory of Jin Guangyao is still fresh. The Jin clan, and the Nie clan, must work to rebuild their reputations and their leadership. Clan Leader Jiang has been aiding Clan Leader Jin much. (With a dry smile) Several times, they have even accepted my counsel.

Wei Ying lets out a disbelieving laugh.

WY: Jiang Cheng accepting counsel from you? Things have certainly changed since I left.

He shakes his head and takes a drink. Lan Zhan lets himself smile.

WY: So, does that mean that my nephew is no longer the self-important peacock he’s always been?

LZ: He is still young, but with guidance he has shown that he is willing to learn.

WY: (Shaking his head) Clan Leader Jin. (With emotion) If only my Senior Sister could see it. I hope she would be proud.

LZ: (Earnestly) She would be proud. (Subtext: She would be proud of you.)

Wei Ying meets Lan Zhan’s eyes. Wei Ying smiles, eyes wet. There is a lull in the conversation. The tone then shifts. Now is the heart of the matter.

LZ: (Softly) Wei Ying, why did you really come back to Cloud Recesses?

There is emotion behind this question which Wei Ying would rather avoid.

WY: I told you, I am just passing through. Of course, I could not pass by without a taste of Emperor’s Smile!

He looks at the cup and smiles playfully. Lan Zhan is stony-faced.

LZ: It is getting late. I will let you rest.

He starts to rise, but Wei Ying grabs his sleeve and pulls him back down.

WY: Ah, now Lan Zhan! Don’t be like that! Fine, I will be honest with you. (Pause. Change of tone) You’re right. I wasn’t just passing by here. I came here because... I wanted to.

LZ: (Firmly) Why?

WY: Why are you upset? If you would rather me leave Cloud Recesses, I will go.

LZ: No. I…(Pause) I want you to tell me the truth.

WY: This is the truth. I came back here because I wanted to. (He sighs) In my travels, I went further than any cultivator before me has ever dared to go. I traveled far beyond the Burial Mounds, so far that I did not see another soul for weeks. So far, that I encountered people who speak in foreign tongues with foreign faces. I saw lands and peoples I had never imagined. But… (Pensively) I didn’t expect it. No matter how far I went, I found myself... missing. Jiang Cheng, A-Yuan, Wen Ning... Most of all, you, Lan Zhan.

Lan Zhan is still stony faced. Wei Ying considers him closely.

WY: What is wrong?

LZ: But you are just passing by. You would leave again so soon.

Wei Ying does not reply to this. He looks down.

LZ: (With emotion) When you departed from Gusu, I thought it unlikely that we would meet again. I chose to take on the duties of Excellency, as clan leader... (Pause) I imagined what life you would choose to lead.

He trails off. These words hang between them heavily.

WY: (Confused) And yet you still let me go?

They share a long look. Lan Zhan’s eyes say what his mouth cannot.

WY: (Gently) Lan Zhan... I understand. But I was not gone this time. I promised you that we would meet again. (Pause) I even wished for you to come with me, remember?

LZ: I do remember. But it was my duty to stay. (Pause) Where will you go from here?

WY: I’m not sure. I had half a mind to visit Clan leader Jiang and the ancestral shrine in Yungmeng... Now I must check on Jin Ling in Jinlintai...

LZ: And then?

Wei Ying falters. He takes a drink. Lan Zhan sighs.

LZ: Why do you lie?

WY: Ah? How do I lie?

LZ: If you have nowhere you plan to go, why do you say you are only passing through?

Wei Ying examines his cup, feigning aloofness.

WY: Well, so what if I have nowhere to go yet? I will simply go where I please.

LZ: (Angry) Why must you always joke about these things?

Lan Zhan stands abruptly and strides to the door. His back is to the camera.

WY: Lan Zhan!

LZ: (Cutting him off) You cast those who care about you aside as if they mean nothing. Even after everything that has happened, you still have not learned how your actions affect others.

Wei Ying puts his cup down.

WY: (With growing anger) And what about those who have cast me aside? Every person. Every single person who has claimed to love me has at one time hated me, despised me, or feared me. What kind of devotion do I owe to anyone then? Whom has cast off whom? (Pause) Even you fought against me back then.

CUT TO- CLOSEUP.

This hits a nerve. We see Lan Zhan’s fist clench behind his back. His only response. Wei Ying stands and approaches Lan Zhan.

MEDIUM CLOSEUP- WEI YING.

Wei Ying is seen just over Lan Zhan’s left shoulder, both facing the open doorway. Wei Ying is in focus, Lan Zhan out. Lan Zhan’s face is out of frame.

WY:(Pained) Lan Zhan, can you really blame me for wanting to be on my own? In this world, what companionship can I hope to keep? At one time, I believed that the Jiang clan were my family, and yet they cast me aside when I tried to do what I thought was right- what I know was right- all in the name of saving face with the other clans. I believed that the Wen clan survivors would be my family, and yet they were murdered by those who hated them without reason- who hated me. I was resurrected into the body of a man whose family despised him and tortured him to the point of sacrificing his own spiritual cognition in the name of revenge. (He considers stopping, but continues) At one time… I even believed that you could be my family, Lan Zhan.

CUT TO- CLOSE UP.

Lan Zhan’s fist is still clenched.

BACK TO- WEI YING.

WY: (Cont. Sadly) And yet you have said it yourself: You have duties to the other clans now, to your own clan, to your pupils, and to yourself. What freedom does that leave you? Hm? Lan Zhan…

CUT TO- MEDIUM SHOT.

We see the back of Lan Zhan’s left shoulder. He trembles as we hear:

WY: (Cont.) I would not have you sacrifice your reputation, nor your doctrine, to stay by my side.

BACK TO- WEI YING.

WY: (Cont.) I may no longer be the hated and feared Yiling Patriarch, but I will never hold a place of honor in this world. Not like you. (Pause. Desolate) I am a clan of one, Lan Zhan. That is my destiny. What roots… what could I possibly rely on in all this?

We still do not get to see Lan Zhan’s face, only his back as Wei Ying looks at him. His eyes are filled with grief. He looks down.

CUT TO- WIDESHOT.

We see the two men standing in the doorway. The Black facing the White. White orchids bloom in the foreground.

CUT TO- CLOSEUP OF LAN ZHAN.

We finally see his face, and it is streaked with tears. He is trembling with anger... among other emotions.

LZ: (Quietly, with emotion) You do not get to decide who loves you, Wei Ying.

We see him swiftly turn, we think he is going to attack.

CUT TO- CLOSEUP OF WEI YING, REACTION.

CUT TO- MEDIUM CLOSE-UP.

Both men are centered in the frame, in profile. In a swift second, Lan Zhan turns, grabs Wei Ying, and kisses him. Roughly. Angrily. His brow is furrowed, eyes closed, hand tense. He is trembling. This is not the fight we thought was coming.

CUT TO- WEI YING.

We see Wei Ying’s face. He is shocked. He does not pull away. His eyes are open, glued to Lan Zhan. This is the moment Lan Zhan, and the audience, has waited for. The moment lingers as their theme plays. They do not move.

Lan Zhan finally breaks the kiss, immediately turning and striding away. We do not get to see his expression as he goes. We are left with only Wei Ying’s stunned expression in the frame.

CUT TO- WIDESHOT.

Wei Ying is left standing stunned, frozen, alone, in the doorway. Lan Zhan is already gone.

THE MUSIC AND SCENE FADE.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 56 Subbed (Finalized)

Shou VS the Bug Girl! Insect Princess (The Gang Witnesses an Evolution (ft. Misawa)

A promotion for Shou to the Yellow dorm has come up, and the condition Chronos has prepared for him is to defeat Ran Kochou, a young woman from the Blue dorm, in a duel. Shou’s frightened about it, but words from Judai and the others begin to motivate him. Shou uses his Vehicroid deck to battle, while Ran uses her Insect deck. Ran spreads ants onto Shou’s field, raising her Insect Princess’s ATK to 2900 by destroying them. Shou battles on, deliberately not using Power Bond, and combines three of his Vehicroids to summon his Jumbo Drill...

Here’s finalized!56, folks! Overall, one of my favorite episodes because it starts off a thread of character development for Shou that we touch back on here/there in Season 2 (when we don’t meander too far from the plot) but really comes through more in Seasons 3 and 4. I love how he takes issue with Ran’s calling him just a “flunky” and acknowledges that, yeah, he’s chased after people out of admiration, but as of now he’s choosing to walk with them instead. It’s a neat moment, and Judai watching his evolution is the cherry on top. i end up having big Shou/Ryou feels by Season 4′s end Also, Manjoume’s new room is finally ready after two episodes, and Asuka’s crashing at Red for now because of Chronos/Napoleon antics. So, Red’s kind of the place to be, it seems.

The only gripe I have here is that this episode starts off the season’s trend of forgetting about Misawa. Which, that it happens in-series, is probably the writers acknowledging that they’ve forgotten him, but... no wonder the dude ends up trying to join the Society of Light later.

Thankfully, there weren’t any card fixes to handle here, but I did do some quick quality-of-watching fixes, including one big one at the end that... lifted me off my seat when I saw it, haha. Also, quick translation note included. List below the cut, as usual.

Enjoy, folks! I’ll be getting started on prepping for 57 soon to make up a bit for the gap between 55 and 56, with some occasional work on 5D’s “Dub-Uncut” #28 splashed in for variety (I actually managed to whip something up for the beginning Rua/Ruka bit with Turret Warrior, lol). Once I do 57 and knock out 5D’s 28, I’m thinking I’ll try to handle 58 and 59 together; it’s the first serious duel between Judai and Ed, and it was the first series of episodes from the Japanese version that I ever saw way back when--so, needless to say, they’re some of my favorites.

Fixes/Translation Notes!

Ran’s name is a pun based on kochouran (胡蝶蘭), the Japanese name for a moth orchid--hence, the Insect deck. Can’t exactly say the dub respected this in... Missy’s name...

As Napoleon asks Chronos about the star-finding project they’re working on, right after Chronos tells him not to worry and he moves his head down as he pulls out a photo of Shou, his mouth sort of glitches up for a second in 1-2 frames; to fix this, I took the next frame of his head moving where his mouth looks natural and copied it in above those frames in Sony Vegas.

As Manjoume hears Judai ask his question about Asuka and her dress, he turns to tell Judai she has it as proof that Blue’s gotten bad--but the shot starts out with Manjoume missing his mouth! To fix this, I took a frame of Manjoume from a few seconds earlier (since it’s a recycled shot [there’s a bit of that this episode]) and just used Sony Vegas to mask his mouth in before he turns.

As Shou sends Submarineroid into attack against Ran, who looks around in fear not knowing where it’ll resurface from, she loses her mouth in a quick frame or two as she quivers; I masked in her closed mouth from the next frame over it in Vegas to quickly fix that.

This one was the tougher one. As Shou surprisingly shows up at Red post-promotion, and Judai and co watch him quibble with Kenzan, the animators did us a solid in... forgetting to put the long wooden benches under Judai and co who are clearly sitting... lol. To fix this, I first stitched together the panning shot here and created a bench in Photoshop, using layers to outline it and fill it in based on the one bench that’s visible wayyyy in the foreground of the shot and tweaking the perspective accordingly to match the table’s, and then adding some shading around Kenzan’s butt--once I did that, I repeated it for Manjoume’s bench and Judai’s bench, tweaking the bench I made for Kenzan accordingly and masking in Judai’s legs and Manjoume’s jacket/butt/thighs over them. Once that was done, I went into Sony Vegas and just recreated the pan (as it was a straight linear pan, I didn’t have to keyframe every single frame [phew]), then masked the fixed image so that only the new benches were visible over the original footage. Came out really nicely, I think!

Designs on You - Chapter Fifteen - Competition Or Peeping Tom

Summary: When Chat Noir comes across Marinette sitting alone in the park sketching late at night, he offers to see her home safely. What starts as a simple conversation between them quickly develops into something more that leaves both sides of their personas confused about their feelings.

Masterlist

Chat Noir sat on the rooftop of a building opposite a coffee house. A coffee house where his should-be-his-girlfriend sat in the window with one of their classmates. They were seated side by side, not opposite, and were far too close together for his liking, looking earnestly at a selection of sketches that covered the table. He didn’t like it, he hated it, he despised it. He wanted to be the one making her laugh, offering her sugar for her coffee, to have her smiling at him. He didn’t want to feel like this, to feel like he was missing part of himself, like it was physically painful to be without her, but there it was. He loved her, he couldn’t deny it, and it had taken one small argument to show him that. He needed her, she was like air and he was drowning without her.

‘I love this idea.’ Marinette said, moving one of the sketches closer. Nathaniel had explained his premise; the competition was to design a poster for Paris Fashion Week, the winning design would be posted all over Paris as well as on the website and promotional material. He would design the scenery, bright watercolours of a Paris street with the Eiffel Tower in the background, if Marinette would design people and outfits to have in the foreground. ‘I have some sketches we can adapt to fit easily.’

‘That’s great!’ Nathaniel said happily. ‘Can you e-mail some to me and I’ll suggest some colour schemes so you can see which you’d like to use? I was thinking a sunset palette for the background, so something in a contrast would be perfect.’

‘We could just go monochrome, that would stand out the most.’

‘I like it.’ He nodded. ‘I knew you were the right person for this.’

‘Thanks, Nath.’ She smiled back, but not fully. Her mind kept drifting back to a certain cat.

‘Problems with the new boyfriend?’ Nathaniel asked uncertainly.

‘We had a fight.’ She explained awkwardly. ‘It wasn’t huge, but I haven’t heard from him since.’

‘Maybe you should call him?’

She shook her head. ‘I don’t have any way to get hold of him, and I don’t know if he’d talk to me even if I did.’

‘I’m sure he’ll come around.’ He said encouragingly. ‘I mean, who could stay mad at you for long?’

‘You’d be surprised.’ She laughed humourlessly.

‘You really like him?’

She sighed, thinking about her answer before speaking. ‘Yeah, I really do. It’s only been two days, but I miss him like crazy.’

‘He must be something special.’

She nodded. ‘So special.’ And her emotions started to get the better of her, the anger she had used to keep her sadness at bay melting away and freeing it.

‘Hey, don’t get upset.’ Nathaniel passed her a napkin before putting an arm around her, giving her a hug. ‘He’ll come to his senses, just give him time.’

‘I hope so. He means a lot to me.’

‘It’ll be okay.’

Chat ground his teeth as he watched Nathaniel wrap his arms around Marinette and pull her close. He needed to get his hands off her before Chat broke them. And Marinette? She didn’t push him away, didn’t even try, she just let him hold her! That was enough, he couldn’t take it any more. He went home. He had to really consider his next move, if he was going to make one at all.

Saturday 8th May 2021

Sunny Round Up/Damp Round Up

I asked for more heat yesterday and today we woke up to a dark, dull sky and driving rain, so I’m lucky I took these photos over the week.

There’s nest at the side of the house, in actual fact there’s more than one in this quiet and untravelled area and it looks like someone’s feeding nestlings as they flew off in that direction with the bounty intact.

That thought made me hungry - the idea of a feast, not the visuals above, so a big cooked breakfast was on the cards: just the thing for a wintery type of day and very good it was too, even if I say so myself.

Earlier in the week we took a walk outside of our own confines and I loved the sight of the blossom and bluebells at a near neighbours’ How pretty it looks - the old brick wall, the gate with the field of sheep beyond and the watering can just left there for my still life, very thoughtful.

Early Purple Orchid in the hedgerow

This is the ‘Big Pond’ I often talk about, I’ve got plenty of photos of this view over the years. You can see how slow growing the grass is so far - today’s rain will be very welcome for the gardens and the farms.

I zoomed in on the Coot’s nest and it was so far away and bright on the screen that I didn’t even realise it was occupied until I downloaded the photo, so that was a pleasant surprise. They use this scruffy heap of twigs year on year.

And so to today’s rainy garden.

I’ve been collecting fluffy white feathers and sheep wool from our walks (yes, I know and I do get comments from Crow) and someone’s taken a chunk of wool from the front porch and then for some reason discarded it. I put the fluffy white feathers in the old nest on the porch log pile and they’ve all been taken, so that’s good. I wonder if they’ve gone in to the box? < link

Another fail was our efforts to move the feeders far enough away from the palm that it was tricky for the Squirrels to reach. What a futile thought that was. I’ve just watched the little one tumble from the cage right down, banging the baffle en route to the floor and it never lost its mouthful of food. I swear they’re made out of sponge or something.

Another shock absorber, both the male and female GS Woodpeckers have been here today, occasionally at the same time.

And finally, in keeping with the spirit of rain lashed windows, here’s a bit of a guessing game. Who was here?

PS if anyone has any idea where I’ve put my house keys, that’d be grand. All the usual places checked - coat, jacket, cardigan pockets, bags, down the side or under chair cushions and the car etc. etc. Oh and the fridge...because you never know 🙄

EDIT: MONDAY 10th May

No one helped, no one had any ideas but THEY’RE FOUND.

I had done a pile of ironing in the kitchen and Crow had put it on the hall chair. I must’ve put the keys on the top to carry upstairs and put away. However, I did more ironing, which I must’ve put on the top of all that, carried upstairs and put on a spare bed to deal with at some unspecified time. The keys were buried and only found this morning (the aforesaid, unspecified time)

To be fair, no one would ever have guessed that resolution. I’m just so glad I found them.

So while I’d personally rather take things in a different direction, it’s pretty clear that some manner of final showdown is coming between the heroes of the DC Universe and Dr. Manhattan. And while his power is considerable, one would have to imagine the collective might of the entire DCU would be able to rout him. They can, y’know, punch him and laser-blast him until he stops doing evil. That tends to work out pretty well for them.

So how? How will that final fight work? What does even Dr. Manhattan have that could possibly stand up to the collective might of the DC Universe - 52 of it, in the likely event this turns into a multiversal Crisis? For that matter, how could he have wreaked such havoc on the DCU in the first place? The best they can handle is being seen with him for moments at a time when he’s in the foreground facing them and can only pull off a butt-shot, but even that’s leaving them in agonizing pain. We hit the point where it’s like the end of Animal Man as the heroes realize the presence of the panel borders separating them from their foe; only Batman can even be heard by their enemy through the conceptual gap, but his words fall on deaf ears. As Manhattan tinkers with the doomsday weapon in the panel on the right, the heroes pound away at the edges of the panel on the left, attempting to break through to save the world, but not even their combined strength is enough: Superman can no more appear on-panel with a tumescent neon cock than I could beat the sky to death with my bare hands. 80 years of content control and mass media franchising stay their hands. Who - who?! - can save the day now?

Steve Argyle - Magic: the Gathering Kaladesh Inventions Meekstone, card # 40/54

[Overall release #111] - [Special release #12] - [Alternate Art #14]

On September 12, 2016 Wizards of the Coast announced the Masterpiece Series. After the success of the Zendikar Expeditions all-foil, alternate art reprint subset the company has decided to make reprint subsets like that one a fixture in regular release sets for the foreseeable future.

Kaladesh Inventions is the first group of cards in the Masterpiece Series. There are 54 cards in the set, the first 30 of which were part of the Kaladesh expansion which released on September 30, 2016. The remaining 24 cards are included in Aether Revolt. The cards have appearance odds slightly better than premium Mythic rares from the same set.

Meekstone, as well as the other remaining cards from Kaladesh Inventions (aside from two cards that were reprints from within Aether Revolt) were revealed on December 24, 2016.

Aether Revolt is the second expansion of the Kaladesh block. Prerelease events for the set take place on January 14, 2017.

Steve Argyle’s illustration is an alternate art, full-frame interpretation for the concept first made visual by Quinton Hoover in the very first release of the Magic the Gathering card game premiered at Origins Game Fair in Fort Worth, Texas in July, 1993. The card continued to be a part of Magic’s core set throughout the game’s early existence, eventually receiving an alternate illustration by David Martin with its first foil printing for its last appearance in the 7th Edition of the core set of Magic in April, 2001. It was never reprinted again until now.

Preorder prices at starcitygames.com opened on January 4 at $60, the current market value of foil 7th Edition copies. There is a stark difference in value for this card between printings but I expect this card will always stay below the 7th Edition foil as it will no doubt be of higher availability.

This is the first illustration for Magic the Gathering from Steve Argyle that fans of his got a chance to see in over a year.

Steve sometimes gets a bit over-zealous with his detailing, as he will freely admit.

In a few rare cases this accidentally does the work a disservice on the card, as it did with Deathreap Ritual. While the details in this illustration are literally microscopic, as I described shortly after the piece was first revealed, the overall illustration does not suffer at card size, there is simply more to see the larger the print is. I had the good fortune of studying a digital copy of this illustration at an exceptionally high resolution. It isn’t useful to most viewers for me to describe the details any more than I already hinted at in that earlier post. Instead let’s just look at the size Steve made public, which I’ve shared above.

The tilted frame of this piece will likely remind some viewers of Steve’s famous Liliana of the Veil planeswalker illustration. The intention of putting the viewer off balance is true for both. I get the impression that the viewer has been affected by the Meekstone’s magical influence and is now looking up at it helpless.

The crystal’s faceting characteristics and color as well as the way its center third is wrapped with some non-crystalline object all seem to subtly call back to Hoover’s original work.

This is a new situation for me as a fan of Magic the Gathering illustrations. I have always been a fan of Hoover’s piece. It is still one of my most favorite pieces to ever appear in the game. I finally get to consider what it feels like to have my favorite illustrator tread hallowed ground. While this is not the first time Steve has done alternate art illustrations, actually he does it pretty often, this is the first time he’s done it to a piece I already knew and loved.

I’ve been involved with discussions like for instance whether Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” film from 2005 is better or worse than the “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” film from 1971. The discussion has some similar considerations, some revolving around creative visions and stylistic intent, others around the exploitation of ever-increasing technology to help craft those visions.

My personal view on this matter depends entirely on whether it is done well. In this case I am not impressed with the 7th Edition illustration. I don’t enjoy the result and it also has no connection to the original work visually. Had either of these two things been true then I may have been more forgiving. In Steve Argyle’s case the work is well-crafted and connects to the original just enough to feel respectful. Both happen to be true, although only one being true would have been enough. Is it necessary that the work has any similarity? I find it hard to say, but I think it is important to have these considerations. In the end I love both the original and Steve’s new vision for different reasons. More importantly I can appreciate some elements of these pieces because they are different. If a comparison such as this comes up and the pieces can stand up to the additional scrutiny I consider that a great success.

One of the things I love about Steve’s work is his exploitation of digital technology. His 3D modeling of the Meekstone is a separate expression of art all together.

Getting back to Steve’s piece, the background is perfectly adequate. It conveys the tilt of the viewpoint, echoes the colors of the foreground, and helps provide a vague sense of scale but is otherwise just a backdrop that commands no attention from the device.

The energy surrounding the device seems to have some inspiration derived from magnetic fields around a bar magnet, with energy waves traveling from one pole to the other. The purely circular, concentric waves reinforce that movement while being not strictly part of it. The details within the light comprising this energy are nothing less than indescribable, appearing to be part glow, part sparks, and part smoke.

The device itself has a wonderful feel to it. Less of the filigree stuff made of wire that much of Kaladesh artifacts seem to use. The ribbons of metal that make up the larger structure of the device look like the symmetrical flower petals found on orchids. The many gears are large enough to see and to give a sense that this sculpture is indeed some kind of machine, but small enough not to take attention from the whole.

The irregularity of the crystal compared to the rigid pattern of the device creates a nice contrast and gives this completely inorganic thing a breath of life.

Perhaps my favorite detail in this piece are the illuminated cylinders surrounding the lower part of the crystal. The light they emit matches the color and intensity of the surrounding energy waves and helps indicate the device as the source of that power and not just a battery absorbing the energy surrounding it. The intricate scroll-work on the surface of these cylinders is a small but impacting bit of the more general Kaladeshi design found in that world.

As for the framing, this image crops nicely to the window of the card frame where only the central part of the artwork is unobstructed. The relative height of the crystal compared to the diameter of the energy wave fits snugly in the frame. There is evidence here that tilting the scene allowed for the complete device itself to appear larger on the card and may have helped inform that decision.
