Title: "Satanic Baptism: A Closer Look"
Author: Damien Harker | Submitted: 23, October, 2023
[DISCLAIMER: These are my opinions and by no means representative of CoS as a whole.]
In Anton LaVey's "The Satanic Rituals," a fascinating and controversial topic is explored: Satanic Baptism. This ritual, meant for both adult and child initiates, is a striking departure from traditional religious baptisms. It's important to note that LaVey's Satanism is not about worshipping a literal devil but rather embracing the self and one's desires.
Adult Initiates: A Personal Choice
Tumblr media
Satanic Baptism for adults is a symbolic act of self-dedication. It's a statement to oneself and to the Satanic community that you fully embrace your identity and have chosen to walk the path of individualism and self-discovery. Unlike traditional baptisms, there's no external deity or authority being invoked. It's a rite of passage that signifies one's commitment to living life on their terms. It's crucial to remember that a baptism is not necessary for joining Satanism. It's a personal choice, and many Satanists choose not to partake in this ritual.
Child Initiates: Controversy and Critique
Tumblr media
The practice of initiating children into Satanism before they reach the age of consent is a deeply contentious issue. LaVey's rationale, which revolves around providing children with choices, empowering them with knowledge of various belief systems, and allowing them to make their own decisions, faces staunch and critical opposition.
Many vehement critics argue that children, particularly at a young age, lack the cognitive capacity to fully understand the profound implications of such a choice. The controversy surrounding this practice has triggered impassioned debates, both within and outside the Satanic community. The act of initiating children into Satanism raises fundamental questions about autonomy, agency, and the boundaries of influence, especially when it comes to an alternative belief system.
This is an issue that continues to provoke fervent discussions and underscores the diversity of perspectives within the Satanic community.
Ritual or Controversy?
Tumblr media
Satanic Baptism, like many aspects of LaVeyan Satanism, serves to provoke thought and challenge societal norms. It encourages critical thinking, individualism, and questioning the status quo. However, it's crucial to approach this ritual with a discerning eye and a sense of personal responsibility.
Ultimately, Satanic Baptism, be it for adults or children, underscores the importance of choice and the rejection of dogma. It reminds us that Satanism is not about conformity but about embracing our unique paths and making informed decisions for ourselves.
As with any topic in Satanism, the journey of self-discovery and understanding is deeply personal. The exploration of rituals like Satanic Baptism is a testament to the diversity of thought within the Satanic community.

When it comes to The Satanic Temple, there's always more
The Satanic Temple uses people—uses them up and discards them (or worse).
If you think you're different, look at what happened to those who came before.
TST will use any weakness you give them and hurt you with it later: your housing, mental health, even the death of your pet.
Tumblr media
Some of you may even remember this Vice article from a few years back:
Tumblr media
Ash Astaroth was then the director of the Temple's headquarters in Salem, and he was still assistant chapter head of the NYC chapter he had helped found.
So in 2016, The Satanic Temple found Astaroth useful for public propaganda, as in that Vice article, even though it wasn't necessarily representative of the organization as a whole. How could it be given who started TST (and who still owned it)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Satanic Trump-supporter Brian Werner's sign speaks for itself, but Werner also believed abortion was "killing a child". Werner apparently found the death of Trayvon Martin very funny, or at least wanted to be edgy selling clothing about it.
TST owner Doug Misicko a.k.a. "Lucien Greaves" a.k.a. "Doug Mesner" reaching out to Shane Bugbee also says plenty, and we've covered that relationship elsewhere. Short version: "One drop of Jew blood means you ain't breakin' bread with me, motherfucker" is something Bugbee once said in the middle of a 24-hour stream with Misicko.
But Zach Black may be less familiar to most.
From The Village Voice in 2014:
Zach Black is a 38-year-old sushi chef in Northern California and a longtime Satanist. He started the Satanic International Network, the largest — though not the only — social media site for Satanists. He was a card-carrying member of the Church of Satan for nearly a decade, from 1994 to 2002. For the first few years after he joined, Anton LaVey was still alive. That made all the difference, Black says, and the church was much more “proactive.” Black is one of a group of disaffected ex-Church of Satan members who believe Gilmore was never supposed to become the church’s next leader. LaVey wanted to pass the torch to a man named Boyd Rice, an artist and writer who was a close friend, Black says. “But he turned it down. He didn’t want to do it. I’m not sure why.” ... Rice, meanwhile, went in a different direction. For nearly two decades, he was part of Death in June, a British neo-folk band that anti-racist groups have accused of supporting white nationalism. Rice has repeatedly denied being a racist or a Nazi sympathizer, a claim that was not bolstered in 2008, when an old video surfaced of him on a public-access TV show, describing Death in June as a proud “racialist” band.
In other words, Zach Black thought it was a shame this guy didn't take over Church of Satan, and therefore Black joined The Satanic Temple to get it going.
Tumblr media
Proactive.
So, back to that Vice article, the message was "We're not like those other Satanists", the Church of Satan, sure, but also Brian Werner, Shane Bugbee, and Zach Black who got TST off the ground in 2013-2014.
This distinction, which also involved throwing those men under the bus and pretending they weren't relevant, was made explicit in that interview with Astaroth.
In 2014, as [Astaroth] prepared for a life explaining away his Lucifer tattoos with a spiel about liking the literary archetype, he discovered the Satanic Temple, an unrelated though similarly-named group. It was actually an anti-Satanic Temple rant that drew him to the organization, posted to YouTube by Brian Werner, a former death metal vocalist in the band Vital Remains. "It's become a very liberal, compassionate, borderline hippie-like outlook on politics and societal issues," said Werner. "If this guy is leaving the Satanic Temple for those reasons," Astaroth recalls thinking. "That's exactly where I need to be."
Those who were there during this era would remember Ash Astaroth because he was central to The Satanic Temple's operations, first in New York City, then in the headquarters in Salem as an employee of 64 Bridge LLC, or the "Salem Art Gallery".
In this capacity, Ash comes up in the Belle Plaine lawsuit depositions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Satanic Temple's owners "helped" Ash Astaroth by letting him move into Salem Art Gallery / TST's physical headquarters.
This sounds kind, but remember, they weren't just letting him stay as a friend: they worked him. They really worked him.
Read those depositions and email evidence from 2017, or just run a find for "Astaroth" to count how many times he's involved in a national campaign over TST's veterans' memorial. It is extensive.
Ash's housing was directly controlled by his employer.
When you are an organization that targets vulnerable populations for "help" and "opportunities" but you control their continued access to resources, no amount of smiles or love bombing or kind words will ever change the inherent threat of what's going on. Look no further than how this level of control can go to extremely dark places than recent events with the Black Hammer cult in Atlanta.
That's the context of the article that Ash Astaroth wrote after being "excommunicated" from The Satanic Temple in 2018, coinciding with the "Great Schism" where many chapters left the national Temple org over TST's owners' priorities and histories coming to light.
In the next post, we're going to reproduce Astaroth's article largely without commentary but with some content warnings where relevant. Then, at the end, we'll say a little more.
But as a general warning, watch out for self-harm and sui references, mental illness, abuse, and pet death.

What exactly is your definition of Satanism?
An excellent question! One that is quite difficult to answer, really. Satanism, in my eyes, is a category of religion and spirituality, centered around the figure of Lucifer/Satan/the Devil, or another, similar figure - be it another figure from Abrahamic tradition, such as Azazel or (somewhat controversially, due to Jewish claims of cultural appropriation), Lilith, or be it a figure from a polytheistic pantheon which has archetypal similarities to the Satanic archetype, such as Set, Loki, Prometheus, Pan or even Quetzalcoatl. Followers of such deities in the latter case are not necessarily Satanic, but they can be, and these deities can be approached and analyzed through a Satanic lens. Satanism comes in a myriad of varieties. To start things off, there is theistic Satanism, in which these Satanic entities (for theistic Satanists often venerate more than just the Devil, instead turning to other demons or deities as well) are seen as actual beings, able to be communed with. Often, they are seen as guides and mentors to be turned to for advise, and to be given respect, but not blind worship and adoration as one would do with a deity in most contexts, but this varies from case to case, with various practitioners holding different perspectives on this, and with it often varying from entity to entity as well. Theistic Satanists are often independent, individual practitioners, organizing with others from time to time to exchange ideas and perspectives, but otherwise not involved in an organized, religious structure. Their practice is typically deeply occult-oriented, with the practice of magic being a key component of their Satanism. Then, there is also atheistic Satanism. These individuals view Satan as an archetype and symbol, not as an actual entity. While they may practice magic and engage in occultism, this isn't always the case either. They are more likely to organize into official religious groups than theistic Satanists tend to be, and the two most famous Satanic organizations - namely, Anton LaVey's "Church of Satan", and Lucien Greaves "The Satanic Temple", fall into this category. While TST portrays itself as socially progressive, in contrast to CoS's more right-wing 'libertarian' leanings and claims of being apolitical, they in fact have plenty of skeletons in their closet, and fall into many of the same trappings that most if not all organized religions do. @queersatanic are the ideal people to turn to if you want to know more about the many messed up things TST has gotten up to over the years. Despite claims made by the Church of Satan to the contrary, there is no centralized, "official", Satanic doctrine. In my eyes, all these interpretations of the Satanic are valid in their own way, and I reject the idea of there being an official dogma within Satanism. It is, and ought to be, a "find your own path"- kind of faith. That said: There are also some "Satanic" groups that step beyond the acceptable. For example, "Joy of Satan" is a neo-nazi group, preaching antisemitism and white supremacy, and using the veneer of Satanism to draw in a new audience for their hatred. I would not consider them to be a genuine form of Satanism, due to the fact that I strongly suspect their "satanism" is in fact pure opportunism for the most part, instead of rooted in any actual convictions. In addition, in my eyes, Satanism as a faith is deeply rooted in the ideal of justified rebellion against unjustified authority. Given how fascism is the polar opposite of this, any Satanism which gives room to fascism is fundamentally at odds with my personal interpretation of the Satanic. I myself, personally, view Lucifer as the ur-anarchist, and by this point must confess to myself that I view him and other Satanic figures primarily as archetypes and symbols, not actual entities. ... And thus concludes my overly long ramble. I hope that answers the question?

A self-described transgender graphic designer made national headlines this June when a number of her designs were used in Target’s controversial pride collection. One design found on the London-based designer’s own online apparel shop has the message: “Satan respects pronouns,” encircling a goat head.
The designer, whose shirts feature phrases like “astrology made me queer” and whose UFO-shaped pin says “no gender no problem,” doesn’t claim on her site to be a Satanist per se. Instead, “Erik” says, “There’s something magical about the unknown, the frightening, and the mystical which is why I so frequently feature these themes in my art.”
Erik’s work isn’t the only pride-adjacent satanically inspired activity to feature in pop culture recently. The brand Nair, which supports pride as evidenced by its Instagram posts, ran an audacious “worship yourself” ad campaign that harks back to the “father of modern Satanism’s” motto, “Hail Satan! Hail thyself.”
At the 2023 Grammy award show, self-proclaimed “nonbinary” singer Sam Smith and transgender Kim Petras’ performance of their hit single “Unholy” included blatant satanic imagery.
Smith and Petras don’t publicly identify as Satanists, but many LGBT members and “pride” proponents do. A simple search of “Satanist” among Twitter accounts brings up countless results that include rainbow flags and gender tags such as “nonbinary” and “she-they.”
Lucien Greaves, cofounder of the Satanic Temple, says most members of the Temple are LGBT folks who consider themselves rejected by orthodox churches and other such religious establishments. Greaves told Out.com, “We will always fight them, we will fight them to the death to ensure that there are equal rights for the gay community.”
History shows, too, that Satanism has been a fitting spiritual home for the pride “community.” Aleister Crowley, the early 19th-century occultist credited with being the “grandfather” of modern theistic Satanism, was keenly interested in ancient pagan deities, many of whom are seen today as “gender-bending.” Androgyny or hermaphroditism was seen by Crowley and other forebearers of the modern occult as mystical, powerful, and closer to the divine. Crowley’s “Gnostic Mass” includes the phrases:
Male-female, quintessential, one Man-being veiled in woman-form.
The infamous icon of Satanism, the goat-headed “Baphomet,” represents a fusion of the male and female, with the two halves of the body representing each sex. The “divine androgyne” is “the hieroglyph of arcane perfection,” according to Crowley. While Baphomet has a complicated history of iterations and interpretation, it’s not unreasonable to imagine that gender-confused young people might welcome this binary-breaking symbol of “balance and harmony” and see a satanic sect as a spiritual home for them.
The two most famous philosophical statements of the 20th century’s most iconic Satanists, Crowley and Anton LaVey, serve to illustrate the strong ties between modern “pride” and their belief systems. The life of Crowley especially finds continuity in the gender-expansive, free-love universe of pride.
‘Hail Satan! Hail Thyself’
In the 1960’s, LaVey, known as the “Black Pope,” created a Satanism that differed from other, older satanic traditions in that it claimed to be atheistic, considering Satan to be a literary figure. LaVey’s most famous chant is “Hail Satan! Hail Thyself.” His Satanism prescribes self-worship and gratification: staples of LGBT pride culture.
Two of his Nine Satanic Statements are: “Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!” and, “Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!”
While most who wave the rainbow flag no doubt would agree that, for instance, murder is wrong (a “so-called sin” Satan represents), pride nevertheless allies itself with the pro-abortion agenda. The right to murder a preborn baby leads to “mental and emotional gratification” for the abortive mother (and often her sexual partners). And ridding oneself of progeny to care for promotes further indulgence Satan is said to represent. Proponents of sexual libertinism and gender fluidity don’t usually describe themselves as Satanists, but LaVey’s philosophy of carnal hedonism is the bedrock of today’s pride culture.
Writing for the Encyclopedia of Religion, professor of religious studies Eugene V. Gallagher describes LaVey’s Satanic Bible as promoting “ritual and pageantry” and displaying “a flair for mockery.” On a ritualistic and philosophical level, drag queen, queer, and homosexual subcultures would mesh well with LaVeyan Satanism. What is drag but pageantry mocking femininity? And what would foment the mockery of Judeo-Christian sexual norms and family structure better than hailing Satan, the enemy of the God who made humankind into the “restrictive” physiological categories of “male and female”?
‘Do What Thou Wilt’
One familiar repeated sentiment in Crowley’s 1909 The Book of the Law has echoed through culture for over a century now: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law. … Love is the law, love under will.” We may not know it verbatim, but we recognize its other iterations such as “follow your heart” or “do what you want” or “all you need is love.” These popular cultural expressions guide the pride movement; they encourage the unshackling of human expression from heterosexual mores.
Unlike LaVey who came after, Crowley was an unabashed theistic Satanist. He wrote in his autobiography of his desire to “get hold of [Satan] personally and become his chief of staff” and “get into personal communication with the Devil.” His pride and egotism, modeled in today’s pride movement, would seem prerequisites even to aspire to such a position.
Activities the Bible labels sexual depravity, the kind celebrated in pride parades, were rampant in Crowley’s life. Early on, he rejected Christian morality and saw taboos as things to be deliberately shattered. The occultist was keen on “sex magic” and was bisexual, as evidenced by his more recently discovered homoerotic poetry. The Book of the Law reflects his belief in “free love,” a lifestyle most accepted within pride: “Also, take your fill and will of love as ye will, when, where and with whom ye will!”
Today, we can see the blending with LaVey’s and Crowley’s philosophies under the rainbow flag: While so-called love is esteemed, the only true reverence is for the self, and the only allegiance is to its will. The highest virtue is the expression of one’s true self: to live authentically, or live your truth. “Hail thyself” and “do what thou wilt” are guiding principles of the pride movement.
In Christian theology, pride is the original sin that prompted God to cast Satan down from heaven. He now leads a rebellion against God’s will. What a wonder is it that pride is the name taken on by the LGBT alliance, which is also leading a rebellion against biblical morality? Those who don’t support pride are routinely shocked by the rhetoric, imagery, and stated desires of the pride movement, such as offering graphic sexual material to young children in school libraries.
But it should come as no surprise that rebellion against God’s design for humanity is satanically inspired. That is, after all, his mission.
