Mammoths at the Gates by Nghi Vo
Tumblr media
The wandering Cleric Chih returns home to the Singing Hills Abbey for the first time in almost three years, to be met with both joy and sorrow. Their mentor, Cleric Thien, has died, and rests among the archivists and storytellers of the storied abbey. But not everyone is prepared to leave them to their rest.
Because Cleric Thien was once the patriarch of Coh clan of Northern Bell Pass--and now their granddaughters have arrived on the backs of royal mammoths, demanding their grandfather’s body for burial. Chih must somehow balance honoring their mentor’s chosen life while keeping the sisters from the north from storming the gates and destroying the history the clerics have worked so hard to preserve.
But as Chih and their neixin Almost Brilliant navigate the looming crisis, Myriad Virtues, Cleric Thien’s own beloved hoopoe companion, grieves her loss as only a being with perfect memory can, and her sorrow may be more powerful than anyone could anticipate. . .

… people change, remember? No one is as they were five years ago, or two years ago, or a week ago, or a moment ago. If you love someone, you must let them change.

Books of 2023. THE SINGING HILLS CYCLE by Nghi Vo.
Don't mind me, just on a novella kick over here. I read Empress a while back and enjoyed it (so that'll be a reread!), and then a friend recommended Tiger as similar to a novella of my own that's loosely in the works, and THEN I won a Goodreads giveaway for Mammoths (!!!!), so clearly the stars are just all aligning. Since Mammoths comes out in September, I wanted to Actually Read The Advance Reader Copy In Advance (and maybe even write up a Review!).
(Side note: I know Riverlands isn't pictured, but it's Not Out In Paperback Yet and all my editions must match.)

Ok we finally got cover releases for some more sequels that I am really excited for soooooo another post was needed, It is shorter than some of the others, but I am so absurdly excited for He Who Drowned the World, Mammoths at the Gates and A Power Unbound so I couldn't wait. Plus all of the covers are glorious, just look at them! I think I am ready for these books to rip my heart out and then (hopefully) stich it back into my chest. They all just hit me in the right way and all have such different styles, but absolutely stunning writing! As for Space Oddity, I kinda forgot about it, but I enjoyed the first book and I am so curious where it is going to go next. All of these authors make me so exicted about the sff genre and I can't wait to read their newest books. Dates of these are subject to change throughout the year, there will be more when more covers get released/ I start more series from my list.
He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan (August 22)
Mammoths at the Gates by Nghi Vo (September 12)
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske (November 7)
Space Oddity by Catherynne M. Valente (November 21)

I remain absolutely obsessed with this series! I loved getting to see more of Cleric Chih’s personal life and getting a peek at the monastery for the first time. I was also excited to see Almost Brilliant again and liked that we got to meet her chick. Basically, I loved everything about this book.
I think this book works well because it’s a nice treat for those who have been following Cleric Chih for all four books, but it also serves as a nice, relatively calm entry point for new readers. The Singing Hills Cycle books can be read in any order, but I think this is a particularly good starting point if you aren’t coming in from book 1 because it lets you get to know the world and the clerics before moving on to Chih’s adventures.

Mammoths at the Gates
It's about homecoming. It's about grief and mourning. It's about returning to a place that's changed, but still so loved despite it (and maybe even because of it). It's about leaving home and growing into yourself, but that means the people you've left behind will do their own growing while you're away. And that's okay. It's beautiful, even.
"No one is as they were five years ago, or two years ago, or a week ago, or a moment ago. If you love someone, you must let them change." (pg. 39)

for book asks: 10, 50, 86?
thanks for asking! referencing this post:
10. a book that got you through something
oh, that's a weirdly tough one? whenever i'm Going Through Some Shit, i tend to read a LOT, very quickly (apparently i'm mostly here for the escapism and the dissociation). the last series i latched onto during a Tough Time™ was THE MURDERBOT DIARIES by Martha Wells, which is now an all-time regular-reread fave for me. it's so funny, it's got so many feelings, AND it's perfectly balanced with the right amount of action, and i love all the characters so so much. it's intensely comforting to me and hits all my buttons perfectly!
50. a book that made you cry a LOT
besides murderbot? the last thing that had me crying in multiple places of the story was MAMMOTHS AT THE GATES by Nghi Vo, which is like. rude. considering it's a little novella lol. but it's hugely cathartic and deeply touching, and i really enjoyed it (and the rest of the Singing Hills Cycle that i've read so far!).
86. a book with an insane plot twist
two are really sticking out at me right now: HARROW THE NINTH by Tamsyn Muir (because i remember That Damn Line, and it's SO good) and LEECH by Hiron Ennes, because i love LEECH with My Entire Chest, and the POV situation is masterful. both are deeply fucked up books (and HARROW is a sequel), and they deal with a lot of heavy shit, but they're both absolutely fascinating stylistically and structurally, the those are my favorite kinds of plot twists (the ones that are hiding inside the medium/structure).

"Memory is greater than death". Nghi Vo's Mammoths at the Gates is an exploration of grief and mourning, a novella about how memories can be shaped and how your loved ones are their own people with stories that you don't know. It's a story about change and the need to embrace the unfamiliar, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant; another extraordinary novella in the Singing Hills cycle, with so much to say about the nature of stories.
✨ 4 stars

I’m so excited to continue with her unique and magical fantasy series. So far, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain is my favorite, but I can’t wait to find out how she writes mammoths into this world.

This was something new, and something in Chih ached, because growing up, growing older, was always a kind of loss, even if what was gained repaid it all and then some.
