I'm excited to announce that I have signed a book deal with Del Rey at Penguin Random House in the US and Michael Joseph in the UK for my debut novel, Alchemised, a standalone dark fantasy set in a war-torn world of necromancy and alchemy, in which a healer with amnesia is taken as a prisoner of war and must fight to protect her lost memories and the secrets hidden among them. It will grapple with themes of trauma and survival, legacy, and the way that love can drive one to extreme darkness, and it is, as you may be able to tell, a reimagined version of Manacled.
I know I’ve been rather quiet about my publishing journey, and a lot of that has been because I didn’t want to spark any concerns or worry that I might be abruptly taking away a story that is such a deep part of myself and that I know has meant so much to so many people. This process has unfolded very slowly and quietly because I have tried to be mindful as I could be in every step of the way.
As most of you know, I have been a reader in fandom long before I ever began to write. Fanfiction is incredibly special to me, and I have tried to do my best not to undermine its legal protection or allow my works to do so either. During the last several years, there has been a growing issue with illegal sales of Manacled, putting both me and the incredible community that shares fanfiction freely in legal jeopardy.
After consulting with the OTW as well as other lawyers, it has grown clear that as a transformative writer I have limited options in protecting my stories from this kind of exploitation, but I wasn’t sure what to do; I didn’t want to just take the story down, in part because I worried that might only exacerbate the issue, but I didn’t know what other options I had. Then I suddenly had this idea of alchemy, which was peculiarly appropriate; an academic world filled with unique transmutational abilities, and a necromantic war against people who had discovered the secrets of immortality, and I could see a path to reimagining the story while still holding on to as much of the original spirit of Manacled as possible.
I began redrafting the concept privately around Christmas 2022, and then as if the universe had aligned, just as I was finishing, Caitlin Mahony and Rivka Bergman of WME reached out to me and were delightfully enthusiastic about concepts and ideas for my new alchemical world and the ways I had reimagined the story.
I'm thrilled to be working with Emily Archbold, my visionary editor at Del Rey, along with Rebecca Hilsdon at Michael Joseph in the UK, to polish this novel for publication in Fall 2025. I feel uniquely privileged that both my publishing teams are familiar with Manacled and understand how special it is to so many people, and how important it is that this reimagining captures the same spirit while also having its own wings.
Manacled is not going anywhere at present. It will remain online throughout 2024, at which point it will, if you’ll pardon the pun, alchemise for 2025 and be removed from AO3.
I'm so thankful to all of you who've enjoyed my works, and I hope that I can continue to rely on your support as I take my next steps as an author.

"What are you watching?" Draco asked as he entered their living room where Hermione installed a TV.
"Hm?"
Draco rolled his eyes knowing to well that if his wife is interested in something you barely can get her attention. So, he came to her and sat near, placing his right hand right behind her shoulders.
"I asked: what are you watching?" he whispered in her ear, that made her shiver a little.
"Emh, it's The handmade's tale. I told you before."
"The one you read?"
"Yeah, but it's a show. Could you imagine that something like that might happen?" she asked him suddenly and looked into his gray eyes. He swallowed.
"I don't think it's gonna be good. Especially after what you told me."
"Yeah... Can't even think about being in her place. Like handmade and... it's just awful."
"Agree."

oh yeah, just one more influencer (this time an insanely popular booktuber from my home country), who is not familiar with the universe of fanfics and treats it like a published novel, creating content based on the “polemic” and “problematic” properly tagged dark fic that many who are not in fandom gets surprised when the fic contains said dark content. and then recommending reading a translation on WATTPAD when sen links to a translation inside ao3 in the author notes before even the first chapter…..i know this fic has breached containment a long time ago and that sen has been run through a lot by people who don’t know fandom etiquette so one more person making a video is nothing new, but like i know how the general br public and br hp fandom is towards dramione and fics in general, and is not good, and if this becomes a trend with other big br bookinfluencers (and another one seems like to be considering reading it) because they feel like they *have* to to get views rather than reading because they are interested in the story (and many of the accounts will read because it’s what people talk about and i can see at least some of them being very mocking and pretentious about it) i’ll have to wade through so many annoying fanfic discourse by people who don’t care about the ship or fanfic in not just one language but two while not being able to do nothing about it.
i haven’t seen the video in the screenshot and it does seem like the creator liked the story. but it doesn’t matter that she liked it because it’s the way these booktok/booktube/booktwt approach fanfic that doesn’t sit right with me (i mean, where did you read the fic that you told someone they can find a translation on fucking wattpad rather than using the one the author linked to???). i mean, and it’s sad that sen gets all of this weight on their shoulders (i mean, this thread made me sad).
these reddit posts are more coherent about the overall situation (excluding the issue selling copies which is another problem) that summarize my opinion.

I’m reading Manacled and it’s breaking my heart to pieces. But apparently, I need even more pain, because when I take a break from reading, I go on tiktok to watch fanmade videos about the same story.

Hi there, I saw the post of you saying that Aurore wrote Manacled. However I’m still wondering, how did she come about writing the sex scenes etc in detail? Was it because Hermione had written some of the explicit stuff that happened to her in a diary and Aurore read and rewrote it? I’ve been thinking about this for awhile
It's mentioned that Hermione writes down extensive notes for herself with Draco as a failsafe in case she starts losing her memory. Hermione and Draco basically wrote the version of the story that Hermione wanted to remember with all the details that she was afraid to forget. So Aurore writing "Manacled' was about putting Hermione's story into the world. Draco's crimes and the surrogacy program were public knowledge, things that had been laid out in court in excruciating detail and written about in books, and so the only way to try to counter-balance that was to reveal the intimacy of the relationship. If it had been left out or glossed over, the relationship and the idea that they could reconcile and would choose each other after that wouldn't have made sense.
At least that's how I thought about it. But again, anything I didn't include in Manacled's actual body is not 'canon.'
My extra-textual explanations and head-canons about things, even the little drabbles and one-shots that are not in the posted story are all basically my head-canons. Yes, I wrote Manacled through the lens of this idea of Aurore trying to tell her mother's story, but ultimately that detail didn't make the cut, so I don't consider it a canon detail. Because it's not in the canon.
Yes, I know I wrote the story, but even then, I don't think writers should externally insert interpretations onto their work as Word of God if they didn't choose to include it in the text itself.
Its an element that readers can extrapolate from the story on their own, or not as they choose.

How did magicians back in the day make seals? Was there a science behind it or was it intuitive?
That's a really good question! The answer is extremely complicated!
When most people these days think of seals they think of goetic seals. But the terminology of "seals" actually comes from the idea of sealing a letter. Specifically, it refers to one of the many apocryphal versions of the story of Solomon and Ashmedai, in which king Solomon uses a signet ring with a special magical symbol on it to command demons.
Now, this is one of those biblical stories that people went absolutely nuts for. Jews, Christians, Muslims, damn near every abrahamic faith has their own take on the story, because let's be honest here it's cool as fuck.
But! The original story from the Tanakh doesn't refer to the seal at all, and focuses much more on controlling the sheyd with manacles inscribed with a secret name of God. The inherent magical power of names of God is a common trope in Jewish literature, but later versions of the tale also include greco-egyptian ideas about the inherent magical properties of language, forms, and mathematics.
So when we look at a contemporary English version of a goetic seal, we are looking at something with literally thousands of years of compiled knowledge behind it. I wouldn't necessarily call it science, or intuition, I would describe it as systematic, and narrative. Closer to how campfire stories are improved over generations as people tell and retell them.
Look at this seal of Belial:
Tumblr media
The idea of the seal itself? That goes back to Babylonian Jewish ideas about written text having power to control supernatural entities. (Google Babylonian curse bowls if you haven't already.)
See how the letters are spaced? That's important. That goes back to neopythagorean ideas about regular polygons being fundamental building blocks of the universe.
The little crosses? Those are probably cruciforms! That's how you can tell Christians were involved at some point.
See how some of the lines of the seal end in little loops? That goes back to ptolmaic Egyptian ideas about magic. If the crosses are cruciforms, these are probably ankh-forms! You see shapes like that all over magical texts from the 2nd-6th century Mediterranean!
These symbols are the result of dozens of cultures and people and languages collectively yes-anding each other for literally thousands of years. They are DENSE with meaning.

Good Saturday, y’all.
Topic of today’s rant: PEOPLE PRINTING AND SELLING FANFIC & GENERAL FANDOM ETIQUETTE
Profiting from fanfic will ruin it for everyone.
I want all of you who gift us your stories to be safe from lawsuits and beware that your content might be stolen.
Not to be on a soapbox and preaching to the choir but here are.
There are many authors pulling their work off AO3 because people acting on bad faith are printing and binding fics to sell on etsy thus infringing copyright laws. Fanfic has always been a grey area and we are allowed to exist in this grey area because we are not profiting from it. The minute money is exchanged, every party involved is breaking the law.
Why am I complaining about this yet again? Because we might be deprived from enjoying fanfic with the freedom we currently have because the fanfic authors will fear getting sued. If third parties are stealing our work and selling it, publishers and studios won’t care to know who sold it. It is your handle (thus IP address) on the sold fanfic. Because, get this, they are doing downloads straight from ao3 with your usernames.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Manacled is being pulled from ao3 because the author will publish it as a book. People are putting the book at risk by selling printed versions of it on Etsy.
Tumblr media
I believe many of us who fall on the 20 years of reading fanfic side rather than on the 20 year olds reading fanfic will remember the Anne Rice days. These are not fully over because her son is carrying on the legacy of suing everyone who writes fanfic of her work. And if I may say, she didn’t invent vampires and should’ve taken many seats. I digress.
I am not sure of the levels of awareness within this community and to what extent it can affect all of us. TikTok is a massive contributor to this problem (as it is to many other problems. Again, I digress) since booktok and the binding folks discovered ao3.
You might think, I only post on tumblr so my content is safe. Well, they are finding their way here too. They cringe because tumblr is for old people but they still make their way here with their bad manners and pillaging behaviour.
I want all of you who gift your stories to be safe, lawsuit free, not lose your content and not be afraid of sharing.
I wish I had a definitive solution to this problem but I can only think of small actions:
report the etsy accounts selling fanfic/fanfic commissions,
report the TikTok accounts selling binding for fanfic work,
go back to the days of putting disclaimers on your notes that you don’t own the characters and you are not profiting from the story.
Tagging some authors* here for visibility so you can cascade to more people. Absolutely no pressure tag.
