As recently as 1996, the existence of polygamous trios in the tanga'eo or Mangaia kingfisher (of the Cook Islands near New Zealand) were uncovered for the first time, and the full extent of heterosexual mating by Common Chimpanzees with animals outside their group was not understood until 1997.

Regional Kini Model
Tumblr media
A model of an idea I had for a the regional Kini temples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one is meant to be the Le-Kini
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I quite liked the glow effect, even if it is really hard on my computer.
The idea behind it is that there would be a statues of the Toa in the alcoves in the pillars, the one opposite the stairs would be lacking a mask. Once the Toa gains the gold mask they could gain access to the inside of the temple, with the central platform becoming an elevator.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 3 statues would also descend. Inside would be the Makoki stone, which would then be used on the Kini-Nui to gain access to Mangaia.
Tumblr media
I only did full glow effects for the Lewa pedestal, but I did make carvings for all 6 versions! Basically they used the Nuva symbol(this is the second time I've depicted them despite not liking the Nuva lol) with the Toa's Makoki stone illuminated. I really like how the Gali one came out in particular, looks like an octopus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is a link to my even older model of the Kini-Nui that inspired this one.
Just want to preempt something:
Yes you may have seen this model somewhere before, posted by not me, but I'm still the one that made it.

The Chronicler's company being transformed into toa, but no one's element is what they expected.
Six Matoran touch the Toa stones at kini nui as they guard the Toa Mata's escape route from Mangaia and get WAY more than they bargained for.
Toa Kapura blinks and suddenly every Magnet on Mata Nui goes haywire.
Toa Macku yelling because suddenly everyone's thoughts are in her head all at once
Toa Tamaru secretly being relieved that she doesn't Immediately start flying, and then all the plants around her grow up to ten feet high and burst into bloom.
Toa Hafu laughs- but the joke stops being funny when his Carving tools get metalbent when he tries to activate his powers over stone.
Toa Taipu looks thoughtful as he picks up a rock, and then calmy watches it drift weightlessy into the sky like an untethered balloon.
Toa Kopeke is silent for a long time. Then, without a word, they zap a stray Infected Rahi with a lightning bolt.
Once Takua picks his jaw up off the ground, he probably says something like, "At least I'm still a normal Ta-Matoran, thank Mata Nui."
...No one lets him live that comment down after the whole Mask of Light incident.

I just saw a post asking why the order of Mata Nui didn't send Teridax to the pit, especially while he was sealed away. I can't find the post to directly answer it but I believe that the order of Mata Nui likely suffered heavy damage during the great cataclysm which they had to deal with. Their headquarters were likely severely damaged which could've led to them not even knowing who comatosed Mata Nui. So by the time they knew who to send to the pit, Teridax was likely already on the island of Mata Nui.
Botar was easily killed by Icarax so if they sent him to Mangaia he would've been crunched by Teridax immediately. The Order knows how powerful he is.
Teridax's supposedly died in the mask of light and his survival wouldn't be known of until after the 2007 arc. At which point nobody had a clue where he even was, and when they did they couldn't fish him out of the core processor.

I've been thinking about how to run a ttrpg campaign inspired by the structure of early (2001-2003) bionicle.
Not trying to replicate the precise details, mind. As cool as bionicle is aesthetically, I think this would work fine with just, humans living on an island. Normal villagers fill the role of matoran, and each village has an elder taking the role of a turaga. Then each PC would be a hero dedicated to one of the villages.
System shouldn't matter too much - though if you want to lean into the original elemental theme, you'll want a system that allows that (and maybe replace ice & rock to more clearly delineate character abilities - electricity/electromagnetism could be one). I don't think D&D-likes / other level-based systems would work too well to simulate the feel vs diegetic advancement by collecting equivalents to masks & such.
I think a pseudo-west marches hexcrawl would work pretty well for the style. You might not even to need a distinct map if the group isn't too familiar with bionicle; just overlay hexes on the mata nui map and start keying.
Tumblr media
Each PC would start on a solo adventure as they wake up on the beach and explore the nearby area, eventually finding a village in need. They help out that village for a bit, get to know the people there, then start to venture out tryin to delve into what's going on, and likely finding the other villages & heroes along the way.
As an example of that sort of structure - once the hero of the Ta-koro equivalent has dealt with the local immediate threats, they head down to Onu-koro to find out the situation with an ore shortage, where they meet another hero and join them for that quest.
The core balance, I think, would be to present problems that require multiple heroes to deal with, while also keeping a matter of villages having small, single-hero problems that need to be dealt with (as well as the manner of general defense against whatever new evil threat is going on). So the PCs will want to group up to make problems easier, but will need to split off on their own more often than not to help their village.
To encourage helping villages - perhaps each village has resource tracks for vital things, and each village has special resources they produce and certain resources they require. See: Ta-Koro smiths need the Ore from Onu-Koro as an example. Each village should have two special connections with other villages, and ideally each should have some specialty independent from this trade all the heroes will want to support (like Le-Koro's Gukko riders).
Each village should also have a Hope resource that dwindles after attacks & long absences from their hero and rises when a hero aids them or just spends time with them. Ideally should encourage the PCs to seek out closer bonds with their villages.
For the dangers & foes, the basic structure of "some dark evil living under the world with minions they send out" works fine. But the details need some tweaking.
Combine krana & kraata into one miserable organic parasite. I'm actually tempted to keep "infected masks" as a core concept, especially if switching the denizens all to normal humanoids. Maybe all the masks are organic kraata/na, who alter their shape to replicate someone's face and look normal, just a bit creepy, unless given a close inspection.
Instead of new threats replacing old (infected rahi -> bohrok -> rahkshi), new threats compound on the old. So we start with corrupted beasts wearing these organic masks, add in mechanical monsters powered by weaker kraata/na who can deliver them (including to beasts to join the swarm), and finally a set of elites near campaign's end (each with a key to reach the final scourge of the island).
My preferred route for "how do you beat the evil" would be to take Mangaia and turn it into a large, central dungeon of sorts that the heroes can only access certain parts of with given keys/plot coupons, with some hard locks and some soft locks, like the first entry is hard locked behind a good amount of plot coupons (found in interesting locations all around the area) to open the dungeon in the first place, so the heroes have more incentive to grow familiar with the entire island. Later keys the party has to collect by responding to how the island changes - like maybe in the second wave of evil, our bohrok-equivalents change the landscape to reveal older ruins / open up other segments of Mangaia / make secondary nests in the island. The last set of keys to reach the chamber of the makuta equivalent would be the kraata/na granted to the elites, taking the krana hunt from the bohrok saga, and then, of course, a big confrontation with the great evil below.

Hey, so I think I just found an unfinished Bionicle game that Biomedia Project doesn't have archived. It's called "Takua's Journey", and it's... interesting, to say the least, especially with its interesting version of Bionicle's lore that differs greatly from not just the later storyline, but even contemporary media like MNOG and Quest for the Toa.
Tumblr media
The game doesn't have an intro or menu; you start it up, and it automatically sends you to the first screen. Note the text on the top-left; when you enter a new room, a name appears in the corner. Most rooms have generic names like "Le Wahi 1" and "Mangaia central chamber" or placeholder ones like "air_village001" and "shadow_lab_entrance", but some also have unique ones. As the name implies, this is meant to be Ta-Wahi beach. Interestingly, despite the name, this is the only Ta-Wahi map; walking to the left doesn't lead anywhere, and walking to the right takes you to Ta-Koro's entrance.
Tumblr media
The guards can be talked to by clicking on them, regardless of distance. The one on the right says the displayed dialogue, while the one on the left adds a "love letter" to your inventory, the flavour-text for which says to deliver it to Amaya in Ga-Koro.
Tumblr media
Entering the volcano-city, the layout mirrors the MNOG version, with some changes; the gate to Onu-Koro is blocked by a Hau-shaped gate, and the door to Jaller's room is on the back-wall instead of next to the entrance, presumably for visibility reasons. Also, Vakama's hut has a giant Noble Huna on top of it.
Tumblr media
Starting with Jaller's room, he isn't there. There's a note for Takua - it uses the same sprite as the love letter, humorously enough - which says he's gone to Ko-Koro on a diplomatic mission, which doesn't match up at all with the canon relationship between the Koros.
Tumblr media
Moving on to Vakama's hut, it's very MNOG-like, with a fire in the middle, and what are presumably crystals around the entrance. But that accuracy changes when you talk to him...
Tumblr media
For some reason, the developers made him Scottish, and gave him a very informal manner of speaking. He gives you a lightstone and a key. The dialogue depicted above is what he says afterwards.
Tumblr media
The key opens the Hau-shaped gate, allowing access to the Onu-Koro tunnels, which are weird. The "maze" on the background does not match the in-game one at all, and unlike most of the game, this room has background audio, namely generic cave noises, which loops very poorly, with audio of someone starting to speak playing right at the end, which only played in this room.
Tumblr media
This leads directly to Onu-Koro, which... is just a pitch-black room. However, there are NPCS, and this is when something... strange happened. I talked to the NPC on the left, but while I was cropping the screenshot in Paint.NET, I heard a strange sound coming from the game window; I quickly switched back, and the NPC was just... gone.
Tumblr media
And the thing is, the other NPC in the room had dialogue talking about him, and yet when I spoke to them now, they had placeholder dialogue.
And then, the game went black.
I reopened the game, and found myself in this strange room. This is the "shadow_lab_entrance" mentioned earlier. Takua had been replaced by a grey Matoran wearing a Vahi.
Going up from that room leads into a room the game calls "shadow_lab", which looks identical to "shadow_lab_entrance". Until, that is, you walk into the centre...
Tumblr media
... and a ridiculously-loud screech plays, as a picture of a black Hau with a red border replaces the background, and the game crashes. Reopening it causes this ominous message to appear:
Tumblr media
After reaching this point, I was too scared to continue, but I've put a download for the game here for anyone who wants to explore its further mysteries.
This post is a response to the two (at time of writing) people who said my Bionicle Heroes DS cutscene summary sounded like a creepypasta. The sprites were made using Studio's POV-Ray renderer. Also, if you didn't click the link, don't bother doing; it just leads to Civvie's 1-Hour Enforcer Dance Party video, and unless you're a ROTT '97 fan, you probably won't care. Also, if anyone recreates this in real life, please send me a link, especially if you add more content after the message; I probably won't play it (because I'm a coward), but I will post it. Also also, sorry if this sucks.

In a modern AU, Lariska would either be an absolute disaster in the kitchen or surprisingly excellent, depending on the type of dish and how many spices are involved
Meanwhile Nidhiki is just kinda mediocre, but his time in the Mangaia frat house forced him to learn something other than just cereal. Thus he looked up a random recipe online and learned how to get good at that one specific recipe, and nothing else.
Krahka's issue is of context. Campfire cooking, she's your girl; will make the most delicious, perfect-textured medium-rare steaks ever. Same exact recipe on a stovetop? She has no clue what she's doing, to the point that there isn't even a comedic fire hazard sign warranted, that would entail knowing how to turn it on to begin with.
It's a household of people who thrive ridiculously well in specific contexts, but most of the time they just wind up ordering takeout.
HOLY SHIT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS!!! THEY'RE ABSOLUTE DISASTER IDIOTS I LOVE THEM!! JUST THEY THRIVE EXTREMELY WELL IN CONTEXTS BUT IN OTHERS ARE DISASTERS DEAR GOD THESE DORKS I DIE!!
Part of me feels Lariska should have better cooking skills since, well she's rather practical period so it makes sense for her to know practical surviving sklils. But like..I just love the idea of her cooking being extremely hit or miss. Feels very in character for her in a weird way.
Also "Nidhiki can cook only one specific recepie and nothing else" is honestly a fucking mood . Every day I relate more and more to this dumbass idiot baby.

On today’s edition of “The Inquisition Discovers Mata Nui”...
Our crew descended back into the archives with Miserix in tow to go hunt down Teridax
They found a bunch of mechanical devices locked away, most probably built by Matau for joyriding purposes
One was a motorcycle made out of Rahkshi parts, both Miserix and Emilia, the Ad Mech tech priestess, were pretty interested in that one
They found the tunnel Bomonga had labeled, followed it, found a crossroads that wasn’t on the map, followed it that way because Emilia was afraid there were Necrons
Miserix did some teleporting once they realized the tunnel was curving back the way they came, found some Blade Burrowers digging that tunnel.  Wonder what they were up to...
They went the other way and found the Bohrok Hive, explored that a bit, found the Bahrag queens and six Exo-Toa
Emilia stole an Exo-Toa, almost brought the wrath of the Bahrag on her, but managed to get out without pissing them off too much
Weirdly enough the Exo Toa had a similar framework to a Tau Crisis Suit, surely that’s not anything important
They decided to split up, Miserix going one way through the hive, the crew heading the other
Treytor, the medic, wanted to go with their sugar daddy Miserix, he was having none of that
They crew explored down a tunnel, it got real dark, surprise surprise, Teridax contacted them, asked them to betray Miserix and he would grant them yada yada yada
Quickly rescinded that offer when he realized they (and mostly Treytor) were the most annoying beings alived and sicced 3 Rahshi on them
Treytor and Oswald made quick work of one in Melee, while Emilia used her Exo Toa to great effect, learning Rahkshi are weak to missiles and semi-automatic plasma bursts into the head and spine
And they found a tunnel that clearly led to Mangaia, so great success!
Emilia ran back to let Miserix know, found him fighting the other 5 Exo-Toa, helped him out (she broke one, Miserix broke 4, then proceeded to eat them)
They entered Mangaia, Miserix started yelling
Teridax didn’t show for his own boss fight (he had gotten his ass kicked by the Toa Mata earlier in the week)
Treytor found a badass evil sword of Shadow that tried to take over their soul, but Treytor was on point with willpower checks this session
They left Miserix to blow up Mangaia and found an elevator that they rode
They arrived on the surface of Mata Nui, saw a bunch of Bohrok doing their thing, and were immediately called by one of the other Inquisition team members, who was watching over the area, they chatted and agreed to leave
Then Oswald, the toa/Ad Mech robot, got a notification in his brain, telling him to go east (towards Ta-Koro), so the team did
B team member called them again, asking what in the name of the God Emperor were they doing
Treytor lied and said that Inquisitor Dominus wanted the B team to go into Mangaia while our crew explored the Island
The B team lady did not believe them and called Dominus to confirm
The B team lady called back and agreed to do what Dominus had asked
The team headed over the Volcano, ran into Dominus (he’s got a Necron teleporter thingy)
He laughed with them, asked some uncomfortable questions, sent them on their merry way
The team is still pretty sure they can’t trust him at all, they’re very right
After scaling the volcano, they saw Ta-Koro under attack by Bohrok
To protect the “little dudes” (aka Matoran) they did a quick battle against the Bohrok which they easily won
Next session we see how these new Matoran react to our “heroes” (they’ll think they’re Toa), meet up with some of the actual protagonists of Bionicle (Vakama, Tahu, and Takua) and find out what Oswald’s compass is pointing towards (the Vahi)

More Chronicler's Company as Toa thoughts
(Another secondary element edition)
So, if the chronicler's company got upgraded at Kini Nui from the toa stones Takua presumably left there,
When the Toa Mata come out of mangaia after facing makuta, the first thing they're going to see are six very confused & bewildered toa that kind of look like the matoran that were guarding their backs. (And Takua, who's probably loosing his mind and asking a million questions)
Keep in mind, the Turaga politely forgot to mention in the last 1,000 years that Matoran becoming Toa is a thing that can happen. So there's absolutely going to be confusion and mild panic. On both sides. (If the other Turaga weren't all busy trying to pump Whenua for information on the bohrok currently spilling out all across the island, they'd have some serious explaining to do.)
Then, someone (Pohatu or Gali, probably) has the bright idea of teaching these new toa the ropes, never mind that they've only barely gotten a handle on their abilities themselves.
Now if the Chronicler's Company were all primary elements, this might be fine. If they're secondary element toa...
It doesn't go so well.
Su-Toa Kapura does find that while plasma is similar to fire, it's a lot harder to control, requiring patience, fine focus, and a thoughtful approach to not sear someone's retinas with a plasma flare. These are qualities Tahu is... less than profient in, let's say. (Kapura quicky ends up swapping his Ruru for Kopeke's spare Matatu. His Eyes appreciate the change.)
Ce-Toa Macku quickly finds herself in the deep end. Literally. Gali is a patient Teacher, and clever, but Macku would have appreciated Gali catching on that she might not be a toa of water before she took her diving to the bottom of Naho Bay. On the plus side, she discovers her Huna is excellent for slipping away once Gali's in meditation. She turns up in Po-Koro a few days later.
Bo-Toa Tamaru has a whole new appreciation for Le-Wahi once she returns with Lewa, truly deeling like she's in her element. (It's also easier to deal with hights if the trees themselves try and catch you if you slip.) Though, depending on when she arrives at Le-Koro, her quicklesson in toahero bravefighting might come worrysooner than expected.
Fe-Toa Hafu and Pohatu quickly find out that iron and stone are two very different elements. Though, it's Pohatu, everyone’s friend. They'll get along fine. Once Maku shows up, a few things are discovered.
1) Only the Krana in these bohrok are alive
2) Bohrok are made of metal
3) They make excellent materal for sculptures once their connection to the swarm is broken.
Meanwhile, Ba-Toa Taipu is learing so much about how to creatively use a Pakari from Onua. He's always enjoyed working in the tunnels under onu-wahi, and this time he gets to walk on their ceilings! However, Onua , while happy for his new brother toa, is quickly realizing that rapidly changing gravity is extremely nauseating.
Vo-Toa Kopeke and Kopaka get along just fine in terms of personality. The problems come once both of them belatedly realize that Ice is an Excellent conductor of Electricity. ...At least the Tahnok didn't like it either.

WEEK 4
Concept brainstorm
Since we are starting part one of our assignment, I have brainstormed a few concepts that I might use for my pattern book.
Concepts:
• Cook Island cosmology story (Rarotonga or Mangaia)
• Life and death - how we enter and leave earth -> journey of life
• Ancestral journey - how my ancestors came to New Zealand from the Cook Islands -> possibly draw both sides of the family?
•. Life story - how I came into the world? -> add cultural background
I think each idea would be interesting to explore through patterns but I am still not completely set on a concept. However, I am leaning more towards concept 3 & 4.
