JEAN-BAPTISTE LULLY

1632-1687

Italian-French composer at Louis XIV's court stabbed himself with staff and died

Lully was born into a Tuscan family of corn millers and was given music lessons in his youth. In 1646, he dressed as a Harlequin for Mardi Gras which attracted the attention of Roger de Lorraine, who invited him back to France to be friends with his niece and he became her ‘chamber boy’ from 1647-1652. He was musically talented and went from her household to become a musician, composer, and dancer at the French royal court.

In 1653, he caught the attention of Louis XIV ‘Sun King’, who quickly made him the royal composer. In 1662, Lully married Madeleine Lambert the daughter of composer Michel Lambert.

In 1683, Queen Marie Therese died and the king secretly married Mme de Maintenon, and he no longer had enthusiasm for opera as he once had. Louis XIV was also put off by Lully’s lifestyle and his homosexual encounters.

In 1687, Lully struck his foot with his conducting staff during a performance and died from gangrene. He refused to have his leg amputated because he wanted to continue to dance. The gangrene spread through his body and infected his brain which killed him. He died in Paris and was buried in the church of Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, where his tomb still exists today.

Boris Terral portrayed Lully in the film Le Roi Danse (King is Dancing) (2000).

Napoléon & Joséphine : Mariage arrangé

Le dimanche 21 septembre 2014, lors d'une vente aux enchères à Rueil-Malmaison, le Musée des lettres et des manuscrits de Paris avait acquis pour 350000 euros (437500 euros, taxes comprises) le contrat de mariage liant le général Napoléon Bonaparte à Marie-Josèphe Rose Tascher dite Joséphine. Cet exemplaire est celui de l'Impératrice Joséphine. Les Archives nationales conservent celui de Napoléon. Le 24 mars 2013, la bague de fiançailles était adjugée à 896400 euros à la maison Osenat de Fontainebleau.

Date : 9 mars 1796

Lieu : mairie du 2e arrondissement de Paris, à l'hôtel Mandragon, rue d'Antin.

Début février 1796, le général Napoléon Bonaparte et Joséphine (Marie-Josèphe Rose Tascher) décidèrent de se marier - publication du 7 février, 17 ventôse an IV.

A l'époque, l'annonce de ce mariage surprit et dérangea l'entourage à cause de leurs différences : Joséphine, âgée de 32 ans, veuve du général Alexandre de Beauharnais, mère de deux enfants. Napoléon, âgé de 26 ans, sans enfant.

Bien que fort séduit, Napoléon comprit aussi tout l'avantage de s'unir avec l'amie de Paul Barras, l’homme fort du gouvernement de la Première République française. Le 9 mars, après 22h00, le mariage fut prononcé à la mairie du 2e arrondissement de Paris, à l'hôtel Mandragon, rue d'Antin. Le 18 mars, le contrat fut enregistré et les copies authentiques destinées aux époux furent envoyées.

Pour se conformer aux mœurs de l'époque, les âges des mariés ont été modifiés. Joséphine est rajeunie de quatre ans, soit 28 ans, et Napoléon est vieilli d'un an, soit 28 ans, né le 5 février 1768 au lieu du 15 aout 1769 (cette date est antérieure au 15 mai 1768, date du traité de Versailles attestant l'occupation et l'administration de la Corse par le Royaume de France).

L'adresse du domicile de Napoléon n'est pas rue d'Antin, mais rue Neuve des Capucines, aujourd'hui rue des Capucines.

Napoléon est désigné comme général en chef de l’armée de l’Intérieur, alors que le 2 mars, il fut nommé commandant en chef de l’armée d’Italie.

La minute du contrat fut signée le 8 mars devant les notaires Raguideau de La Fosse et Jousset et en présence du capitaine Lemarois.

Charles-Théodore-François Leclercq, officier public de l'état-civil du 2e arrondissement du canton de Paris, est désigné comme autorité du mariage, mais il partit avant et fut remplacé par le commissaire Collin-Lacombe.

L'article 1er du contrat indique que les époux ne seront nullement tenus des dettes et hypothèques l’un de l’autre, mais 3 ans plus tard, le 18 avril 1799, une apostille du tribunal civil de la Seine vint se joindre au contrat, attestant l’inscription d’un acte privé sur un registre public. En effet, pendant que Napoléon était en Orient, Joséphine demanda la séparation des biens avant son achat du château de Malmaison. Elle emprunta pour cela des sommes que son mari rembourserait personnellement à son retour.

Article 1er. Il n'y aura aucune communauté de biens entre les futurs époux… en conséquence les futurs époux ne seront nullement tenus des dettes et hypothèques l’un de l’autre.

"Par devant les notaires à Paris soussignés, furent presens Napolione Buonaparte, général en chef de l’armée de l’Intérieur, demeurant à Paris, rue d’Antin…, originaire d’Ajaccio en Corse, fils de défunt

Charles Buonaparte et de Letizien Ramolini, son épouse, actuellement sa veuve, stipulant pour lui et en son nom, d’une part, et Marie Josephe Rose Tascher, veuve d'Alexandre François Marie Beauharnois, duquel elle a deux enfans, Eugène et Hortense, demeurant à Paris, rue Chantereine…, la dite citoyenne née en l’isle Martinique du mariage de Gaspard Tascher, capitaine de Dragons et Rose Claire Des Vergers, son épouse, stipulant pour elle et en son nom, d’autre part, lesquelles parties, dans la vue du mariage proposé entre elles en ont arrêté les conditions civiles ainsi qu’il suit.

Article 3e. Chacun des futurs époux contribuera pour moitié aux charges du mariage.

Article 2e. Chacun des futurs époux jouira à part et divisément des biens, droits et actions tant meubles qu’immeubles lui appartenant et pouvant lui appartenir par la suite à quelque titre et à quelque cause que ce soit et en quoi qu’ils puissent consister… la future épouse ne restant tenue de recourir à l’autorisation de son mari que pour les actes qui emporteroient aliénation de ses capitaux. Le futur époux autorise d’ailleurs la future épouse à continuer les fonctions de la tutelle qui lui a été déférée des deux enfans mineurs issus de son premier mariage…

Article 4e. Le futur époux constitue à la future épouse un douaire de quinze cens livres de rente annuelle et viagère, valeur ancienne…

Article 6e. La future épouse déclare et le futur époux reconnois que les meubles, linges, l’argenterie, et généralement tous les biens meubles corporels dont la future épouse est maintenant en possession appartiennent à la communauté qui a subsisté entre elle et son premier mari et qui a continué avec ses enfans, faute par elle d’avoir fait faire inventaire dans le délai prescrit par la loi. Que la future épouse fait actuellement procéder à cet inventaire et qu’il est sur le point d’être mis à fin. Qu'elle, future épouse, ne peut déclarer maintenant le montant de sa fortune parce que tout dépend de la question de savoir si elle acceptera la communauté ou si elle y renoncera, ce à quoi elle ne peut se déterminer qu’après la confection dudit inventaire…"

Article 5e. Arrivant la dissolution du mariage, la future épouse et ses héritiers reprendront : 1° les habits, linge, hardes, dentelles, argenterie, bijoux et diamants à l’usage personnel de ladite future épouse, 2° tous les meubles et autres objets mobiliers et quelqu’espèce qu’ils soient que la future épouse ou ses héritiers justifieront avoir été acquis par elle ou autrement lui appartenir.

Apostille du tribunal civil de la Seine datée du 18 avril 1799 : "Insinué à Paris au bureau établi près le tribunal civil du département de la Seine le vingt neuf germinal an sept (18 avril 1799)… et transcrit

tout au long les articles premier et cinq au registre de forme dudit tribunal… à la réquisition du porteur qui a signé sur ledit registre et a été averti de la déclaration à faire dans les six mois du décès du prémourant et de réitérer l’insinuation de l’article premier relatif à la non communauté au greffe du tribunal civil…"

Part 2 picks up with a recap of Part 1. Then we are back in the streets of Marie-Mere, with Micki finally finding Ryan, who seems dazed. He said he tried to get the book but was knocked out. Micki is worried, since it has been over an hour. He insists he is fine. She says they should check on Jack. Ryan wants to see Adele, but Micki says they will after seeing Jack.

Asteroth goes to a cemetery crypt. He breaks in the stone door via magic. Inside, it is a huge space. He breaks open more crypts, exposing skeletons. He tells Lucifer the place of his return awaits and laughs.

At the church. Christine and her father sit and pray. She's worried, asks him to pray for her.

Micki has been going through Jack's papers about the Book of Lucifer. She gets frustrated by Ryan just staring out the window. He says it is a waste of time, he needs to see Sister Adele. Micki says no one can see her. Ryan acts weird and then leaves.

Later, Ryan is outside the church as Asteroth reads the next prophecy. Ryan heads forward. He gets inside, upsetting the other nuns with his insistence on seeing Adele. She says it is okay, he's a friend. Ryan says he has to speak to her in private. Uneasily, Adele takes him to her room. Ryan tells her he met Asteroth. Adele knows Ryan is under Asteroth's hold and tries talking to him, then grabs her crucifix and begins praying. Decroux and the other nuns try getting into the room as the possessed Ryan attacks Adele. Asteroth speaks and laughs through Ryan, opens the door and tells Decroux that Adele is dying for her faith. Then he runs off. Decroux and the nuns find Adele and pray to God.

In an alley, Ryan is lamenting what he just did under Asteroth's control and finds the 666 on his chest. He screams.

At the hotel, Micki calls Johnny who's at Curious Goods, worried about Ryan's odd behavior. Ryan's mother shows up at the store. Johnny tries to calm Micki, who asks him to come to France. He agrees, then tells Mrs. Dallion it will be okay.

Cops bang on Micki's hotel room door, then barge inside, looking for Ryan. They take Micki with them.

Johnny talks to Ryan's mom, who is worried about him, thinking he must hate her. Johnny says Ryan loves her, and everyone deserves a second chance. She says she can't lose another son.

Ryan slips into the hospital and goes to see Jack. He begs his friend to wake up, telling he killed Adele and doesn't know why. He begins to cry, thinking his life is over now. Jack lays unconscious, Ryan asks why he couldn't help him this time. And tells Jack he needs him as he continues to sob.

Asteroth is chanting his evil prayers over a skeleton, and Ryan is again possessed, leaping out the hospital window as nurses rush in. He runs off into the night.

Next day, Micki is still being interrogated by the police. They don't believe her claims of strange events and she doesn't believe their claim that Ryan killed Adele. They won't let her leave or make a phone call.

Asteroth continue his work in the crypt, with Ryan at his mercy. He makes an upside cross on Ryan's forehead and says a child of God will be Lucifer's vessel.

That night, at a candlelight prayer vigil, Adele's body is carried through the streets. Johnny arrives via taxi and goes to the hotel, where he finds out Micki was arrested.

Ryan watches the prayer from the streets.

Johnny demands they let Micki go if they aren't charging her, and is shocked with the allegations against Ryan. He tells the detective they are leaving to look for Ryan, and they head out.

Ryan spots Christine and her father in the prayer group, and takes the girl, her father rushing after him.

Decroux begins a prayer over the body of Adele for all of those present. He tells them Satanic powers are at work to destroy their faith.

Ryan rushes with a protesting Christine as Micki and Johnny search frantically. Christine's father tries to stop Ryan, but Asteroth possesses Ryan, who tosses the man to the pavement.

Decroux continues to pray, saying Adele was killed because she was a symbol of good. He tells them they should have faith and pray. As they do, Jack has memories of what happened, what Adele had told him about her faith, and finally awakens, saying "The child."

Ryan brings Christine to Asteroth in the cemetery crypt.

Micki and Johnny still search, then go to see Jack, who is gone from the hospital.

Asteroth continues to read from his book, as Christine prays on her own. Asteroth tells her Lucifer is the true ruler, but she is brave and keeps praying. Asteroth uses his magic to heal her legs for Lucifer's arrival.

Jack finds Christine's injured father, who tells him Ryan took Christine. Micki and Johnny come upon the men, thrilled to see Jack. Micki fills Jack in on what she read, and Jack realizes the place of the dead mentioned must be the cemetery. Before dying, her dad asks them to save Christine.

Asteroth continues his plan to bring Lucifer to Earth. Asteroth has Ryan pull Christine to her feet, to show her what his faith in Lucifer has done for her. She can now stand on her own and walk. Christine listens to Asteroth, but refuses to praise Lucifer, so Asteroth makes her legs give out.

Decroux and the crowd continue to pray, as wind begins to blow.

Ryan is forced to hold Christine down as Asteroth works to use the Book to bring forth his master. He picks up a sharp skeleton bone, and says since she won't accept Lucifer, he will kill her and Lucifer will be resurrected in her body. He lifts the bone over her.

Jack, Micki and Johnny race through the cemetery looking for Asteroth and Ryan.

Christine appeals to Ryan, trying to get through to him. He looks at her and is flooded with memories of his late brother. Just as Asteroth brings the bone down, Ryan screams and puts his body between it and Christine, Asteroth stabbing him in the back. Micki, Jack and Johnny arrive at the same moment. Ryan, out of Asteroth's control, asks Christine to pray for him before falling to the ground.

His body is wracked in pain and transforms into young Ryan. Asteroth says the prophecy has been fulfilled, thinking Ryan will be the vessel for Lucifer.

At the funeral vigil, wind blows and a bright light appears in the sky. All are in awe.

The light even reaches the crypt, worrying Asteroth, who is burned reaching for the Book after struggling with Johnny. Christine stands in the light. Jack rushes to her. Asteroth stumbles to avoid the light. Jack finds the unconscious boy on the ground and picks him up. Micki is confused. Asteroth again tries for the book but it bursts into flames, then he does as well. He thrashes about before turning into his demon form and exploding. Micki holds the boy, and Christine says they must get him to the shrine.

They get to the shrine, still bathed in the bright light. Ryan begins to thrash about. Decroux prays over him, hoping to rid him of the influence of Satan. Christine kneels and prays to the Blessed Mother, asking them to return Ryan to what is God's will. A visage of a woman appears, the light becomes blinding and Ryan screams.

The light dims and fades away, and the boy lies calm. Jack talks to Ryan, who asks who he is. Ryan remembers Jack as a friend of Uncle Lewis. Christine introduces herself, but Ryan doesn't recall her. She thanks him. Ryan asks where his mother is. Christine tells Decroux that the Blessed Mother wants her to stay, and the Shrine waters flow again. Ryan asks if Micki is okay. She tries to get him to remember her, but all he can recall is a cousin named Micki, with red hair. They hug.

Back in the airport in the US, they all arrive home. Ryan runs off, Jack says he didn't say anything to Mrs. Dallion because it would be hard to explain. She is there, waving at them. Ryan comes up to her, calling her mom, but at first she thinks he's looking for someone else. Then she recognizes the boy her son used to be. Ryan says she looks different. She is shocked and Jack tells her this is Ryan, as hard as it is to believe. Micki tells Ryan she recognizes him, but he looks a little different. He says she is still the prettiest mom in the world, and them embrace, as Jack, Micki and Johnny look on.

My thoughts:

As I said last week, this is written and directed by Tom McLoughlin, who was the man behind Friday the 13th: Part VI - Jason Lives!, one of my favorite in the film series. He did a great job in opening the third season, while finding a creative way to write out - but not kill off - Ryan. I commend and thank him for that.

I remember the first time I watched this episode. I had graduated high school around the same time as the season two finale. Was working nights now, and was harder for me to be there each late Saturday night. I recorded this and watched it a few days - maybe weeks? - after it had aired. Like I said, no pre-information. It was, to me, just the season three opener. Little did I know.

Ryan becoming possessed and killing Adele is so much. But, as it was with weekly shows, you assume they will somehow over come this. Ryan won't be sent to prison! Then he sacrifices himself for Christine, and you think this will either wound him and also redeem him or kill him. But he's back for season three, they won't kill him off.

Imagine my - and other fans - shock. Ryan is turned back in to a child… and stays that way! Yeah, he isn't killed off. But LeMay is gone? What does all this mean? I was stunned. Ryan and Micki were so big to me as a lonely, awkward teen. How could Ryan be gone from this group?

We had no answers this week. Just this ambiguous end. I remember after watching this, going to let my dog out and just standing, looking out at the bare trees and feeling the end of something. Like I said, I'd graduated and was working. I'd begun to miss episodes of the show and had to play catch up. It all just felt like an end had begun for something that had been so special and important to me. And I had no clue what the future held, for Ryan, for Micki and Jack, and in my life, for me. A weird, very personal, nexus point of life, I guess.

Johnny, as we know now, took over the younger male lead role. They play Johnny here a little different than before. Less harsh and horny, and more friendly and helpful. I don't mind Johnny, but Ryan was irreplaceable.

The religious motifs here are huge, and it makes sense. The show always focused on the demonic and Satanic, so it was interesting to see the flipside of that. But, I have to wonder if this big season opener, with God, and prayer, and nuns and Lucifer combined with airing in more prime time slots, opened the door for more tight ass religious zealots to see and condemn the show. Is it a coincidence that this ended up being the final season?

All in all, a great big movie of a season opener, with the show's status quo truly shaken up. Glad Ryan was left alive, for a possible return. Never happened, unfortunately. Only in my fanfic. Maybe I'll share that one day, if anyone would care to read it.

JO (2013) PARISIAN COP ENGLISH SPOKEN TV SERIES

This is a TV series I came across scrawling around on OK.RU and detained my scrolling because of the actor Jean Reno, who I think made a name for himself as a good actor, which he is. The movie series of the only season of 8 episodes (which I have included) Reno playing the main character is well played out, though, as far as I am concerned, not his best acting, though, he did perform well. The bottom line, I enjoyed the series, however, the script was simple with some intrigue but the highlight was Reno.

Jo (previously known by the working title Le Grand) is an English-language French police procedural television series created by Canadian-American screenwriter René Balcer with French writing team Franck Ollivier and Malina Detcheva.

The series, shot entirely in Paris, is centered on Jo Saint-Clair, a cop played by French star Jean Reno in his first lead TV role. Along with his team, Jo attempts to solve murders taking place around some of the French capital's most famous locations. (Jo (TV series) - Wikipedia)

The lifeless body of famous organist Johan Van Vliet is found at the foot of the "Portal of the Last Judgement" of Notre-Dame. His eardrums were pierced and his face set towards the statue of the angel who plays the trumpet to sound the waking of the dead. An outstanding musician, Van Vliet was also an egocentric man known to be a womanizer. In making the victim symbolically deaf to the call of the angel, the killer seems to have wanted to prevent the victim from receiving divine mercy.

During a Fashion Week show, a 38-year-old former model is hurled off the Eiffel Tower. Her lover's wife is initially suspected, but Jo then follows a trail back to 22-year-old Jasmine, a showgirl in Quartier Pigalle and the dead supermodel's abandoned illegitimate daughter.

Mountaineer Bernard Lang's body is discovered with a broken neck in climbing gear at the foot of the Luxor Obelisk in the Place de la Concorde. Fascinated by the obelisk and its history, Jo knows that the monument is also a great vantage point of the surrounding area, including the suites at the Hôtel de Crillon. And in one of them, that evening, a well-bred young woman (Miranda Raison) was cheating on her husband.

In a parking lot on Place Vendôme, firefighters uncover the charred body of Philip Roquin, an accountant for one of the square's many jewelry stores. His wife admits that he was kidnapped and that a ransom was requested. The investigation leads Jo Saint-Clair to a prison where a woman called Lisette was incarcerated.

Marie-Eve Lambert, a young gallerist, is found lying on the Place des Vosges, killed by a violent blow to the head. Believing at first in a crime of passion, Jo discovers a mysterious message in the victim's hand which leads him to the Archives Nationales, where Marie-Eve was doing research on women in the French Resistance deported to Auschwitz.

Leaving the Palais Garnier where he had just dropped off his daughter for her dance class, Raymond Sittler is assaulted on the steps of the Opera. A few seconds later, he starts convulsing, collapses on the porch and dies. Initially suspected, his mistress is also murdered at the Barbès-Rochechouart station, through poison. The investigation leads Jo to the prestigious Sorbonne University and to the door of a troubled student and his ambitious girlfriend.

A young geneticist was stabbed in the Paris Catacombs, a Satanist symbol etched on her back. Jo is convinced that this is a crime of passion. But the case takes an unexpected turn when the team discovers that the victim was conducting experiments with plague bacteria recovered from skeletons of the catacombs. The trail leads to a mysterious woman who could well be a serial killer on the run. She seems to already have chosen her next victims: the family of a prominent politician. The killer turns out to be Nicole Wallace (played by Olivia d'Abo), the one-time nemesis of Det. Robert Goren in the series Law & Order: Criminal Intent (also created by René Balcer).
