So far, for both my first entry as well as my second entry I mentioned the up and coming director named Romain Gavras. So it seemed to be only fitting that I focus on his influence in the industry for this entry as well. His movie Athena has started to influence Algerian cinema in the 21st century. Since this film came out just a year ago, there are not too many movies or directors shadowing his skills. Although that does not mean his influence has not been talked about. 

One thing this specific director did throughout his movie Athena was showcase a unique style and difficult film techniques. Matias Boucard was the now infamous cinematographer who worked on the movie Athena with Romain. And now Matias’s work in this film is said to be something very impressive. In the movie there were many new filming techniques people had not seen yet till the behind the scenes footage came out about Athena and viewers could finally see how the magic happened. One thing that Romain and Matias did here was a technical virtuosity, where there was a lot of fast pace switching of cameras. The camera would go from one person who was operating the camera while sitting on the handlebars of a motorcycle to another operator in a moving van. There were so many fast elements done in this film. Matias talked about how he had a lot of freedom with filming this movie because he had such a wide camera lens to capture so many elements in the film.

In this short clip you can see a scene where the motorcycle camera hand off took place. You can really see in this clip what Matias was focusing on, even though there is so much going on in the background the focus is always on just a few people.

It is important for us all to understand how impressive Matias’s work is in cinematography in order to understand why other film directors, actors, and industries would be so heavily influenced by him as well. 

Algerian cinema has come a very long way, usually you do not see success stories like this one is strating to be. Algerian cinema has taken on a new world in the 21st century and Romain Gavras has his part in that…

Much of Algerian cinema has been about creating a sense of realism, and yes every director has their own way of doing so but similarities have been starting to spread ever since Romain and Matias started working together. I am anxious to see where their influence takes Algerian cinema.
