I've been thinking about what it is so specifically about Minecraft roleplay that involves so much sharing of interpretation between creator and audience. And what I've landed on is that the crux of it is something entirely separate from either. There is a third party providing interpretation—that of the "world" (the video game) the characters occupy.
See, there are a lot of different game worlds used for storytelling. For example, The Sims. When a creator tells a story using The Sims, the actions are provided by the game. There's very little that is vague in terms of what the characters are doing. The creator may still provide the characters' thought processes and link everything together for you, but the game is doing the heavy lifting of the storytelling.
Take an opposite example. D&D provides quite a lot in terms of worldbuilding, but most of the story is told via an entirely separate medium: speech. If one character stabs another, the game provides, perhaps, two minis colliding. That doesn't tell you much. So, the creators narrate every aspect of the what's happening, from the characters' thought processes to the sensory impact of what they've done. The actions themselves still leave little up to interpretation because you've heard them directly from the creators' mouths.
Finally, take Minecraft. In contrast to the other two, the actions characters take are often ambiguous. We know if one character hits another, but we don't know what that means. It could be nothing, or it could be a deep betrayal. The same action is used by a QSMP egg to say "hey, I have a sign for you to read" that c!Wilbur uses to violently and righteously beat c!Dream to death in his fantasy. So, in the ambiguity of the action lies a tricky situation. The game doesn't detail what the action is (a tap on the shoulder or a punch to the face), but the creator can't either. It would be a betrayal of their medium to do so. They have only the tools of context and reaction to indicate what an action means. And these are very useful tools! It's clear that when Wilbur beats Dream, it's to be taken with the gravity of a real-world beating.
But because of this unwritten rule that actions can't be clearly stated, Minecraft roleplay creates a story that requires the audience to interpret themselves what, exactly, is happening. They can choose not to engage with this. If two players bump into each other, the audience doesn't have to say what that means. The creator can also choose to state things outright at times. Perhaps when those players collided, it was a hug. But the gift of the medium is when neither of those things happen, and the audience gets to say, "They did that on purpose to be hostile!" Maybe that wasn't what the creator intended with the action, but they kept to the rule—so the story now, uniquely, belongs to the audience to create.
mcrp is like little girls playing with barbie dolls making the most complex, deep and kinda horrifying story ever but the girls are actually full grown men and i think that is a beautiful thing
I always see people panic over what to do with the characters when a mcyter they like turns out to be an awful person but they liked their character and it’s just like. i mean one be reassured this isn’t new, minecraft roleplay has existed since minecraft itself and creators being revealed to be bastards isn’t far behind. it’s inevitable with a community this size- which isn’t to say there isn’t an issue with silencing abuse in the community, there is, but like even if things were perfect there this would statistically happen sometimes. this isn’t the end of the world people ten years ago went through the same thing. and two, just fucking steal their oc man it’s what people have always done. it's generally pretty easy to find unofficial vod or video uploads on YouTube, give those a watch so you don’t support them monetarily, and just go “huh it’s weird there’s just a minecraft character here being controlled by literally nobody. anyway.” and also do shit with their characters you know would piss em off too that’s always cathartic. there are situations where even just continuing to support someone's work can be harmful but in the case of mcyters they do not have like. the influence of people like jkr. if you’re not giving monetary support and not like giving a shit about them as a person it’s fine. don’t freak out and drop your coping mechanisms please.
i will never forgive dsmp's weird redefining of the term lore bc now you get people saying stuff like "smplive doesn't have lore" then what is the rich player-run trading economy of spawn city? what is the void and the chunk error? what is the nether roof society? what is the culture that arises from the hit mechanic and death counters?
what is this, if not lore? lore isn't a big overarching plotline or dramatic events. lore is the culture and history of a fictional world, the stories that are told among its residents - what makes that world feel alive and lived in.

Any Minecraft Youtuber who you feel like deserves more recognition is welcome, but the kind of MCYTs that this blog is geared at specifically are those without an active Tumblr community. A simple metric to go by is "do they have less than five pieces of fanart in their tag?", but that's not a strict rule and you're welcome to discuss whoever you feel like fits the criteria!
This blog is run by @luigra , @a-bit-dapper , and @j3st3rc0r3 but more mods would be helpful!
i call this one “the duality of minecraft roleplay”
one if these taught me life lessons and the other traumatised me (hint: it was the one who revealed his skin wasn’t even a cat (that shit fucked me up frfr)
i think before joining or making a minecraft roleplay server every creator needs to either have played at least ONE campagin of a ttrpg of their choice (doesnt have to be dnd) or they must have spent their entire childhood roleplaying with people on any social media/forum/chat app their tiny hands could get a hold on. i want these minecraft roleplayers to have backgrounds in doing roleplay with actions written out *like this* in their friends text messages and getting into insane drama as teenagers in discord roleplay servers
