Duty to Explore
Monday, October 26th, 2020
CAL - Well, we survived the night. As a matter of fact, we survived all of Meadview. As I write to you now, we are relaxing in our new home in Bisbee, AZ. Soon after the Night of the Wind, the large, bald one packed our stuff and gently placed me in my cat carrier for a 7-hour drive south.
At first, I did not like being in the car, but I also understood that we were not going to the vet, so once I was able to separate one occurrence from the other, I started to relax. This is only my second long car ride, but I tend to figure things out pretty fast.
Michele drove throughout most of the daylight hours. When she finally unloaded the car the sun had just set. Upon entering our new home, I was a little startled by the sheer size of it. It’s still one room, but you could easily fit 2 campers in here. Also, there are almost no cabinets.
Tumblr media
I took an immediate dislike to our new room, but I set off to explore anyway, as it remains my duty. I moved slowly and carefully, noting there was almost nowhere to hide in case of an emergency. I carefully smelled around the bed and large pieces of furniture. Michele spent nearly an hour rearranging the room, which did not help my anxiety. Once everything was in place, I finally found a spot at the end of the bed where I could relax.
MICHELE - I just finished unpacking and am starting to get a feel for our new home at the House of Art and Mirrors in Bisbee, AZ. We are staying in the Oscar Wilde Studio, which is a free-standing building, located behind the main house. I take note that this Bed and Breakfast was aptly named, as our room is adorned with 12 mirrors and 20 pieces of art.
It took longer than planned to get set up. I had to move quite a few decorative figurines to make room for our stuff and also push together two tables to make space for my laptop. Once everything was put away, however, I still had time to drive to Safeway for groceries. The grocery store was only a few miles away, a luxury that I no longer take for granted.
When I got back to the studio apartment Cal was already napping on the foot of the bed. He looks so comfortable like he’s lived here forever. I take a deep breath and lay down next to him.
A new adventure begins.

Heaven is in a cabinet in Meadview, AZ, and voting in Palmdale
Monday, October 26th, 2020
CAL - Our camper is small, but I continue to discover new places to explore. It was Wednesday morning when I caught a whiff of another cat from one of the lower cabinets. As I investigated, I realized that I had never been in this particular cabinet. I sniffed incessantly and knew that I had to get inside at any cost. I tried pulling the door open with my paw, but it was stuck. I tried scratching through the door, but unsurprisingly that did not work either. It was only when I started to verbally express my distress that the large, bald one finally took pity and opened the cabinet.
Upon entrance, I was confused. The space was very shallow and barely had any room at all, but that’s when I noticed it. The Crevice. To my right, there was a small opening, from which the cat smell was emanating. I cautiously pushed my head through the hole. It was dark, but I could make out a much larger space beyond The Crevice. Naturally, I crawled inside.
Tumblr media
I followed the smell around the space. I could tell from the scent that the mystery cat was friendly. In fact, the entire space was filled with a beautiful mix of scents and tufts of fur from a variety of friendly cats. The smells were starting to fade as the friendly cats were long gone, yet I breathed deeply and immediately felt at peace.
Now, I am going to tell you a secret, a fact that is little known amongst the large, bald ones. And I am assuming that you, dear reader, are a large, bald one (since there is only one type of cat that reads blogs). Well, here it is. Cats leave messages with their scents and tufts of fur.
Yes, it’s true. That’s why we are always rubbing our faces on the furniture, it’s the way that we communicate with other cats. Sadly though, most of our messages go unheard, since the large, bald ones are constantly cleaning up after us. But on that day, I made an important discovery, a place where the large, bald ones may never come. A place where cats can communicate freely. This cabinet is like heaven.
As I moved around the large, dark space, I estimated that I was in an unused storage area, which had been completely walled off, save the entrance through The Crevice. I smelled each inch very carefully and I slowly started to digest the different messages from all of the cats that had come before me. The different pieces started to fit together and before I knew it, I had discovered the secret to the universe! It’s here; it's really here, behind the bottom cabinet, next to the bedroom, in the camper at Happy Trails Campground in Meadview, AZ! Who would have thought?
Now, I’m not very well versed in translating cat smell into the written word, but I would like to share the secret with you to the best of my ability. It’s meeeooowwpurrringfortytwocutecatsnoringsoundsmeow. I hope that makes sense and that you can help me spread this miraculous news.
I've been trying to share this discovery with Michele for 3 days now and she continues to scratch my ears and coo at me. Sometimes I think she'll never get it.
MICHELE - Well, I’m on my way back from an impromptu trip to Palmdale, CA. Why, in the world, would you drive to Palmdale, you may be asking? That's a fair question. A lot of things had to go wrong for me to end up in this situation. Let me start at the beginning.
Once upon a time, I lived in LA, in an apartment, with a permanent address and a mailbox (this will become relevant later on). When I decided to put my stuff in storage and travel, my first concern was receiving my ballot for this year’s election. My first idea was to send the ballot to my personal mailbox, which is essentially an online mail service (run by Travelling Mailbox) that will scan copies of your mail to your email account and then forward the important pieces to your current location.
Since I planned to move locations on October 26th (8 days before the election), I thought this would be a prudent move. The unforeseen problem was that personal mailboxes had a street address, a suite number, and a mailbox number. Somehow the online form dropped the mailbox number and around the middle of October I came to the realization that my ballot had been returned to sender.
That was okay though, because in the state of California, you can request a second vote-by-mail ballot before Oct 15th. I made the request just in the nick of time, this time sending the ballot to my current location in Meadview, AZ. I asked the campground host for the mailing address and carefully cut and pasted it into the online form.
Well, that ballot was supposed to arrive last Thursday, but life in Meadview is a little slow, so I didn’t start to worry until Saturday, which was yesterday. I had already asked two different staff members at the campground to look out for my ballot and confirmed the mailing address. They were both very friendly and did not seem to have any concern that I would receive my mail.
Around 4pm yesterday I decided to go look in the mailbox myself, just in case. I walked to the entrance of the campground but there was no mailbox. I went back to the office and then to the residential property on the grounds. No mailbox. Anywhere. That was definitely strange, so I decided to drive to the post office and ask what was going on.
When I enter the post office the clerk listens to my story and then abruptly says “We don’t have mailboxes in Meadview. We don’t deliver mail”. What? I just stared at him for what felt like a full minute. He encouraged me to recite the address where the ballot was mailed and then he confirmed with great certainty that I would not be receiving that ballot.
Well then, onto plan C.
I went back to the camper and spent the next hour researching all of the possibilities for voting. It was already too late to get another ballot by mail and to complicate matters, I am moving to Bisbee, AZ on Monday. There is a late vote-by-mail ballot option, but it has to be applied for in person, which would kind of defeat the point of voting by mail. I looked into the possibility of driving back to LA on election day, but Bisbee is 8.5 hours away. I started looking for early voting locations and found one that was only 5 hours away from Meadview. You guessed it, it was in Palmdale.
I have to admit the drive to Palmdale was kind of cool. There were lots of hills and interesting rock formations and the roads were nearly completely clear for most of the way. Once I got close to my destination though, my car GPS and my phone GPS started giving me different directions. I was really starting to feel like the universe was testing me.
I reluctantly followed the directions from my phone and was directed onto a dust-filled road that was literally crumbling underneath my car. At one point I passed by a small group of middle school-aged children, who were playing in an empty field next to the road. It was like I was driving through the set of a horror film, except this was real life and the stakes were much higher.
Just when I was about to give up, I turned a corner and was directly in front of a megachurch, with the polling station. There was no line, and I easily accomplished my mission.
As I was walking back to my car I felt a sense of calm wash over me. This was probably the worst-case voting scenario that could have possibly happened and now it’s over. I have officially done my part. I know that Cal would be proud of me, and I am excited to explain it all to him when I get home. I just don’t know if he could possibly understand a situation this complex, he is just a cat, after all.
